ASK A VET with Dr Suze brings you 10 foods to avoid giving your pet‌particularly this festive season!
1. Avocado may be a superfood for us humans but is toxic to many animals. They contain persin, a compound which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs. The seed can also cause a gastrointestinal blockage. 2. Alcohol or ethanol poisoning can occur after consuming rotting fermented foods, mouthwashes, perfumes, certain pharmaceuticals as well as food products and beverages containing alcohol. As a central nervous system depressant, signs of ethanol toxicity include; decreased coordination, difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhoea, abnormal blood acidity, tremors, coma and even death. 3. Coffee and Chocolate contain substances called methylxanthines (e.g. caffeine and theobromine), which when ingested by dogs and cats can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, heart arrhythmias, tremors, seizures and even death. The darker the chocolate, the higher the methylxanthine content. Chocolate also has a high fat content which can lead to gastrointestinal upsets and potentially pancreatitis. 4. Cooked bones should always be off-limits. They become brittle and easily break into sharp shards which can puncture or become lodged as they attempt to pass through your pets gastrointestinal tract. Never feed your dog cooked bones. 5. Peaches and plums have seeds that contain cyanide and are choking and digestive hazard. 6. Grapes and their dried variations; sultanas, raisins, currents, are highly toxic to cats and dogs. The toxic substance remains unknown, but as little as six grapes can be enough to cause kidney failure! Other signs may include vomiting and sluggishness. 7. Macadamia nuts can result in clinical signs approximately 12 hours after consumption. The toxin in the macadamia nut in unknown but it can cause paralysis, vomiting, elevated heart rate and fever. Other nuts such as almonds, pecans, and walnuts contain high amounts of oils and fats resulting in gastrointestinal signs and potentially pancreatitis. 8. Onion and garlic contain thiosulphate, which can damage red blood cells resulting in anaemia in both dogs and cats. 9. Ice cream contains lactose, a sugar found in dairy-based products. Pets do not possess significant amounts of lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose. Consumption can result in digestive upsets and the high fat content may also increase their risk of developing pancreatitis. 10. Food scraps are mostly fine in moderation; however special mentions go to the cob of “corn on the cob' which dogs can not digest. If swallowed whole this can result in a gastrointestinal obstruction requiring surgical removal. Go easy on chicken skins, they are high is fats which can result in gastrointestinal upsets and potentially pancreatitis. If you suspect that your pet has ingested any of the above items or anything suspicious, contact your veterinarian immediately for further advice.

Spring Bird Feeders by BASE CAMP KIDS Ingredients:
1/3 cup flour 1/4 cup water 2 teaspoon gelatine 1½ tablespoon corn syrup 2 cups bird seed
Steps:
Materials:
Drinking Straw Large cookie cutters – star, heart, shapes, etc Bowl of flour to dip cookie cutters in to prevent sticking Mixing bowl and spoon Baking tray Baking paper
1. Put bird seed in a bowl. 2. Add the flour. 3. Then add corn syrup. 4. Then add gelatin. 5. Last add your water. 6. Now mix well until all your ingredients are combined (it is fine if the mixture is sticky). 7. Place a sheet of baking paper on a tray and place cookie cutter onto the baking paper-lined tray. 8. Spoon bird seed dough into cookie cutter until full and press down to make it compact. 9. Gently remove cookie cutter from around the shaped mixture. 10. Use a drinking straw to make a hole in each one (so you can hang them up with string later once they have cooled). 11. To bake, put them in the oven at 180 degrees for 5-10 minutes (it depends on how big and thick yours turn out) until they are firm. 12. After about 30 minutes, when your feeders are completely cooled, you can tie string to them and hang them in the trees for the birds to enjoy!
