FIVE MINUTES WITH ChristinaYou, the founder of Mandarin Immersion Program, My Playroom. q Why we think a fun Mandarin learning program is requisite? The world we live in, the idea of 'I'll travel and work' is much stronger than it ever was before. Individuals have advantages in the workplace as employers are increasingly seeking workers with knowledge of different languages and cultures. We all know Mandarin is the most spoken language other than English in Australia. In fact, “Enrollments in Mandarin study among state school students have more than tripled since 2011. In 2019, it first became a top-five language among state school students.” said by Madeleine Heffernan on The Age's educational page June, 2019. q What is an Immersion Program? “Immersion is a technique used in bilingual language education in which both the native language and the second language are used for instruction in a variety of topics.” Research has shown that these forms of bilingual education provide students with overall greater language comprehension and better exposure to other cultures, in a native-like manner. On the other hand, in traditional submersion programs, bilingual students generally receive all of their instruction in their second language. These programs are often referred to sink-or-swim programs, because there is little support for the students. q What age group is the program designed for? Our program is specially designed for 'Early Immersion' - forming a solid foundation of learning Mandarin. We believe, it is much easier for children under 6 to learn a second language, because it is the time they are acquiring language, no matter their mother tongue or not. Our Mandarin Immersion program provide a strong basis for fluency later in life and help our students gain appreciation of learning Mandarin. q How do you teach Mandarin in the Montessori way? Taking account limitation on exposure time in a Mandarin environment, we try to apply most of the principles of Montessori education in our program. We carefully prepare our classroom before each lesson and display our sensory-based material from left to right in progression order on open shelves. The structure of our lesson is in corresponding with the five key areas of Montessori method: Practical life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language and Culture. A practical life activity example - set up the table: We take time to introduce the items used in this activity: plate, spoon and fork, cup and placemat. We giving the child Mandarin words for the items they will be using. We show them how to set up the table by repeating the items in Mandarin. “Your turn.” We use simple games to reinforce the new words they are learning, and repeat this process in various ways. The children will be shown how to pack up their learning materials for the next student to use.

fi e minutes with

q Tell us more about your teachers? Our qualified staffs need to be native Mandarin speaker and also very fluent in English, who love children and are passionate about teaching.

ASK A VET with Dr Suze Did you know…. Primates and horses are the only animals to have sweat glands throughout the body? The moisture produced by sweating evaporates, taking heat energy away from the body. Dogs and cats can only sweat from their paws thus our pets rely on other cooling mechanisms such as panting to regulate their temperature. The inability to maintain a normal body temperature in hot weather can lead to lifethreating “heatstroke”. Hot tips to keep your pet cool this summer! Never leave your pet in the car – on a sunny 200C day the temperature inside a sealed car can double in 10 minutes and increase to 600C in 30 minutes. Cracking the window has been proven ineffective at preventing rapid temperature rises. If out and about, make sure you are going somewhere pet friendly or leave your pet at home. Limit your walks – to early morning or evening. Ensure you carry enough water or there are water stations on route and limit how much to do on particularly humid and hot days. Check the pavement temperature – before you head out. If it's too hot for your hand it's too hot for your pets paws. Walk on grassed areas or consider dog boots to avoid burns. Particular care with brachycephalic breeds – such as Pugs, Bull dogs and Staffies. They have narrower airways making heat loss less efficient when they pant. Overweight dogs and those with heart and breathing problems are also at increased risk. Keep your house cool – if your pet is home alone, closing blinds, leaving the AC on low or alternatively leaving windows open and providing fans can keep temperatures down. If your pet lives outdoors, provide plenty of shade and water. Cool treats – such as ice cubes in your pet's water or a Kong toy stuffed with frozen treats will keep your pet entertained and cool. Groom – out any knots and loose winter hair. Recognise the signs of heatstroke in your pet: Heavy excessive panting, Drooling, Trouble breathing, Elevated heart rate, Dark or red gums and tongue, Dizziness, Weakness, Agitation. If you see these signs, then take your pet straight to your local veterinary clinic. Dr. Susanna Gamage BVSc MRCVS has over a decade of international veterinary experience and is the founding director of Dr. Suze - My Visiting Vet. Welcome to Country - An Introduction to our First peoples for young Australians by Marcia Langton ISBN 9781741176667 $29.99 'Australia is alive with the long history of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, our cultures and our stories. My generation of Aboriginal people want young Australians to be taught more about our history and culture than we were. I have met very few Australians who learned anything in school about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Many have told me that if they were taught anything at all, it was incorrect and often racist. In fact, many Australians think that the only 'real' Aboriginal people are those who live in the deserts. This idea is based on two centuries of racist views that were wrong and should have no place in modern Australia.' Professor Marcia Langton
