READING THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD After many years of practice in the area of paediatric optometry, I have realized that the requirements of a child's visual system - the way it functions, the demands placed upon it - differ from an adult in many ways. In early primary school, a child learns to read and write, so that they may utilize these skills to learn more effectively in the latter primary years. First we learn to read, then we read to learn. Reading well, reading efficiently, without undue strain, fatigue or blur, is not a given for many children. Eyes need to co-ordinate and focus, and the visual data needs then to be interpreted and processed by the brain. Children are our future. A thorough examination with a properly trained behavioural optometrist can ensure your child sees the world as best they can - nothing less is acceptable. Bookings for comprehensive eye examinations for children may be made with Dario, Optometrist.

Ÿ Technology as they use interactive
Kindergarten is your child's first taste of formal education. It is where your child's academic, social and emotional development and confidence all begins. Below is a breakdown of key elements your child will be exposed to at kindergarten:
Social Development: Ÿ Forming new relationships with students and teachers. Ÿ Recognising and respecting authority figures. Ÿ Cooperating with others in small or large groups. Ÿ Listening and respecting the ideas and feelings of others. Ÿ Making new friends using skills such as sharing, caring, communicating, listening and empathising. Ÿ Conflict resolution.
s parents, we all know that choosing the right school for your child can have a dramatic impact on their learning and future pathways to success. However as an Education Consultant, I don't believe enough emphasis is placed on the crucial role kindergarten plays in the educational journey and development of a child.
Academic Development: Ÿ Fine motor skills as they draw, paint, cut, paste, knead, thread and make. Ÿ Gross motor skills and they run, jump, climb, skip and bounce. Ÿ Early literacy skills through stories, songs, communication with others, basic letter/sound recognition and early writing activities such as drawing and tracing. Ÿ Early numeracy skills using numbers, clocks, money, measurement tools, shapes, patterns, puzzles and counting games. Ÿ Early science exploration by talking about how the world works through games and activities, growing gardens, caring for animals and cooking. Ÿ Drama, dance and music skills as they pretend, dress up, sing, dance, clap and move. Ÿ Cultural awareness as they share stories of their families and explore different cultures 8
through stories, festivals and music. whiteboards and iPads as tools to facilitate learning.
Emotional Development: Ÿ Dealing with a new environment, new teachers and friends. Ÿ Saying goodbye to mum, dad or carers. Ÿ Understand their own feelings and how to express and moderate them. Ÿ Discovering a love of learning. Responsibility by looking after their own belongings or taking on a special helper role. Ÿ Independence by following new routines, making decisions, exploring new things and taking risks. Ÿ Self worth and confidence as they experience success, failure and feedback from teachers and peers. Ÿ Resilience as they learn to manage the ups and downs of kinder life.

8 Tips for Restful Sleep A good simple bedtime routine that is consistent is one of the important keys to good sleep hygiene:
§ § § § § § § § §
Dinner Bath Massage Nursing or bottle Swaddle or sleeping bag Dim lights Read one story as baby gets a little older A big hug and kiss and into the cot or bed Our aim is a sleep environment that is comfortable and safe for the children.
1. Keep the temperature of your child’s room around 18-21 degrees. Make sure that you use air con and heating safely when required. 2. Various studies have shown that children with a clean, neat bedroom will have better quality sleep. Keep baby’s cot or your child’s bed tidy and ensure that you make all beds on a daily basis. 3.If possible, a bedroom should be a single purpose room. Your child should know that his or her bedroom is for sleep time. Try to keep toys in a separate area such as in a play room or a living area.
by Cheryl Fingleson 6. A good mattress makes a baby feel cozier and it will support growing bones and makes for safe sleeping. Be sure to choose a firm cot mattress made specifically for babies. A soft mattress can lead to suffocation and raise the risk of SIDS.
7. Use high quality, cotton sheets in the cot and bed. 8. Don’t allow your child to have many toys in their bed. It stimulates their imagination and can be a SIDS risk for babies. If your baby or child sleeps with a comforter, that is all they should go to sleep with… Avoid keeping a large collection of soft toys in your child’s bed. A messy bedroom can affect your child by over simulation. The bedroom should be a place for sleep and relaxation. The bedroom is your child’s safe sleep sanctuary Poor sleep is known to compromise general cognition. The blue light emitted by screens restrains the production of melatonin, the hormone that controls your sleep/wake cycle. Limit screens before bed.
4. Light alters sleep patterns so it is best to use a block out blind or block out curtains. You may have to use both curtains and block out blinds. 5. Sleep is controlled by the hormone melatonin - released at night and reduced by light entering photoreceptors in our eyes. Avoid harsh or direct light. Look at purchasing a air permeable great block out cover with sun protection to use when your baby or toddler needs to sleep away from their cot or bed.

Winterise your
W
e are continuously exposed to infectious pathogens. So why is it that some children come down with every 'bug' and others don't? The most important barrier between your child and nasty winter bugs is their very own immune system. Babies are born with naturally leaky guts, meaning that there are little gaps in the gut lining. This is important because it allows the antibodies from breast milk to flow freely into the bloodstream, providing baby with natural immunities to bacteria and viruses. So leaky gut is good for babies, but only in the beginning. The gaps ideally seal before introducing solids, but for many it takes longer, or never completely seals which leads to not only food allergies but also immunity problems. So why is gut health so important? It is the first line of internal defence (your skin is your first line of external defence) when a bug (virus/bacteria/parasite) enters the body. This can be through rubbing eyes, putting hands in mouth or up the nose. These bugs are ingested and if the natural gut bacteria are not able to destroy them at the lining of the gastrointestinal tract then they pass through and get into their bodies. A balanced diet, where you keep sugar at a low and increase the foods that promote good gut bacteria, is vital. Sugar reduces your immune system and creates an inflammatory response within the body. It is hidden in lots of childrens' products so be aware and choose these wisely. Here are some tips to support your child's immune system and keep them well this winter. 1) Focus on the GUT
16
The digestive system is friends with the immune system. Over 70% of our immune system lives in and around the gastrointestinal tract; therefore having high levels of good bacteria in the digestive system is imperative for building a strong immune system in growing children. The beneficial balance of 'good bugs' in the gut is easily upset by many factors, including antibiotics, high sugar diets and stress. This can lead to an increased risk of colds for your children. Do your kids get tummy aches often? Are they constipated? Do they eat a balanced diet? Two great ways to support the health of your child's digestive system include: a) Bone broth. This not only heals and repairs the digestive system, but also provides protein, minerals and carbohydrates to tiny bodies, which helps the immune system function optimally. Drink on its own or use it as a base for soups, adding plenty of garlic, ginger, turmeric and cumin, cinnamon, sage, oregano and thyme. These herbs and spices have excellent anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties and are most potent when used fresh. b) Probiotics. These support the growth of gut flora and can be found in foods such fermented vegetables (sauerkraut, kimchi), miso, kombucha, kefir (water or dairy) and yoghurt. Good quality probiotic supplements are important, especially after antibiotics, which can adversely impact gut health and, in turn, immunity. Most people benefit from probiotic supplementation, kids included. Different strains of probiotics are required to achieve various results.

2) Protein with every meal. Your child’s body uses protein to build new cells (for growth), including immune cells. Protein can not be stored in the body so in order for your child’s immune system to function at its best, protein needs to be eaten regularly. Sources of protein include meats, eggs, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and whole grains.
foods like icy poles and smoothies, for warm, immune restorative food and drink. Swap salads and raw vegetables for soups, stews and swap icy poles and iced drinks for herbal teas (yes, even kids can enjoy a variety of yummy herbal teas such as rose hips, spearmint, elderberry and lemon balm which can benefit their immune system).
3) Decrease sugar Sugar has a huge impact on immune function as it weakens immune responses and increases infection time. Sugar inhibits phagocytosis, the process by which viruses and bacteria are engulfed and then literally chewed up by white blood cells. Sugar also negatively affects the good bacteria in our gut.
6) Exercise outside Regular, moderate exercise and Vitamin D (via sunlight) are imperative for a healthy immune system. It is tempting on cooler days to stay indoors, but where possible, get your kids outside to move and play.
4) Eat seasonally, preferably local foods Food that is in season and locally grown is at its freshest and most nutritious. Zinc and iron are minerals that are needed for healthy immune function and red blood cells. Foods high in these include meat, seafood, beans, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, brown rice, lentils, figs, dark green leafy vegies and beetroots.
7) Personal Hygiene Talk to your kids about personal hygiene. Washing their hands before handling food is one of the very best ways to prevent infection. Teaching them to wash after going to the toilet (with soap!) before they eat and straight after school. Good hand hygiene is the best way to prevent germs getting into their little bodies. 8) Rest Adequate rest is so important for preventing and curing illness. At the first signs of your kids being run down, make sure they get more sleep. This can sometimes be tricky, but certainly pays off in the end. When given the right building blocks a child can develop a healthy and robust immune system, which is something the whole family will benefit from.
5) Warm foods are best In the cooler months, it is best to swap cold

Why your kids won't listen to money advice ......and how you can bring them around Every parent wants the best for their children but kids often won’t listen to the wisdom of your experience, especially when it comes to money. Here are some of the common beliefs and misconceptions kids have about managing money—and how you could get them to take your advice. 1. Money buys happiness This is one of life’s hard lessons—that money doesn’t really buy happiness. Yet what we do with our money can impact the way we feel. You can show your kids the positive effects money can have by donating to a worthy charity they can relate to. 2. The bank is an endless supply Younger children in particular can see banks as places with limitless amounts of money. Help your kids understand how banking works by getting them involved—help them deposit money, make withdrawals from an ATM and track their spending. 3. I’ll just ask mum and dad Spoiling your kids with gifts can be a real joy—for the children and for you—but it does little to instill good savings habits. Encouraging children to save now for things they want down the track—it’s a lesson they can draw on for their rest of their lives as their desires for toys, games and trips to the movies morph into grander aspirations for holidays, cars and homes of their own. 4. Only grown-ups have to work Pocket money or an allowance is a common method of giving kids autonomy over their spending. Consider helping them learn the 18
value of earning money by allotting payment for household chores or encouraging them to take a part-time job in their teenage years. 5. Not young forever Just as you probably did at their age, most kids think they will be young forever. If only this were true! Retirement age will come and it's never too early to begin planning for it. Help guide your kids to plan for their long-term financial futures early on so the need stays on their radar. 6. Money is intangible Children today can find it harder to appreciate money because—physically speaking—it's something they see less and less. Consider taking a practical approach to money handling such as having them count how much they hand over when making purchases and watch it amass when they're saving. 7. Do as I say, not as I do Kids tend to learn by example; if your own money habits contradict what you're trying to instill in them, chances are your efforts will be in vain. Take the opportunity to overhaul the way you manage your own finances—for your own financial health and your children’s. In this issue of FIVE MINUTES WITH, we speak with Grandmaster Joon No, Head Instructor of Joon No’s Taekwondo. For the past 46 years, he has successfully promoted Taekwondo in Victoria and continues to do so with pride and passion. q How did you start Taekwondo? I grew up with martial arts. My father was a champion at Korean wrestling Ssireum. I have 3 older brothers who took up martial arts when they were children, and I followed in their footsteps. We started with judo, then Taekwondo. q You have been teaching Taekwondo for 46 years, and still doing this on full time basis. How do you do it? I love what I am doing. I want to impart my skills and knowledge to as many students as possible. It is rewarding when my students move up the ranks and finally attain black belt level. More rewarding is when these students become instructors themselves or when they bring their children or grandchildren to train. q How does Taekwondo help children? There are many benefits for children to learn Taekwondo. I have seen many children improve on self confidence as they move up the belt ranks. They develop into calm and self-assured young people with high self-esteem and are less likely to be bullied. They also learn self defence which helps them to stand up to bullies. q Does Taekwondo encourage children to be violent? It is a misconception that Taekwondo promotes violence in children. On the contrary, Taekwondo teaches students self control. With strong emphasis on courtesy, humility and respect in Taekwondo learning, children develop confidence and increased self-esteem to resolve conflicts amicably. q What is your advice on learning Taekwondo? Taekwondo is a martial art, a way of life and is a lifelong journey. Students will progress in different stages and in different degrees. Patience and dedication is key. Many people quit as soon as they get to Black Belt, thinking they have learnt all there is in Taekwondo. Without continuous training to train the body, one may not be able to apply the techniques effectively to defend himself in a situation.

A growing How to diagnose it? What to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurological disorder that can impact an individual's ability to communicate, regulate their behaviour and interact socially. The symptoms typically appear in the first three years of life and can present themselves in a wide variety of combinations from mild to severe. Currently, ASD affects 1 in 58 children and is five times more common in boys than girls. Between 2012 and 2015, there has been a 40% increase in autism diagnoses. The increase in diagnoses is likely due to a number of factors including increased assessment opportunities, better awareness by pediatricians, teachers and parents, increased services offerings and changes in the diagnostic criteria. A lot of children that were previously getting diagnosed incorrectly with ADHD or ADD, are now receiving an autism diagnosis.
Repeating words or phrases over and over; Giving unrelated answers to questions; Getting upset by minor changes; Having obsessive interests; Flapping their hands, rocking their body or spinning in circles; Having unusual reactions to the way things sound, smell, taste, look or feel. If a child is demonstrating some or all of these sorts of symptoms, parents are strongly advised to seek further information from their pediatrician or a specialist Autism service, like Irabina, who can diagnose whether the child is on the Autism spectrum. It is extremely important that parents act quickly if they suspect their child may be exhibiting some of the symptoms of Autism. Studies have shown that the best outcomes are achieved when treatment is started as early as possible.

concern - Autism do if you get a diagnosis
by Jose Molina
Dr Jose Molina, Clinical Services Manager at Irabina Autism Services says about treatment, “The treatment most supported by scientific evidence to support skill acquisition and behaviour management in people with ASD is behavioural interventions. Studies have shown that the best outcomes are achieved when treatment is started as early as possible and with a high level of intensity”.
Debra Goldfinch, CEO of Irabina Autism Services said, “When parents get an autism diagnosis, they often don't know where to start and can go in search of all sorts of different treatment options with different practitioners that takes up a lot of time and money, adds additional stress to an already stressful situation, and ultimately often don't work because it's not a cohesive plan for the child”.
“Additionally, individualised intervention programs that take into account the child's unique characteristics are more likely to be effective. As I always say, when you have met one child with Autism, you have met one child with Autism. Every person with Autism has different specialised needs that must be addressed through a well-designed intervention program supervised by a professional clinician, working in collaboration with the parents and a multi-disciplinary team.”
“We want to help parents with everything they need under one roof so that they know they can access all the services required for their child in one place and to be assured that they are receiving first class care. An autism diagnosis and living with a person with autism can be extremely hard on the entire family and community surrounding that person, and so we offer counseling and help for the whole family. We believe a holistic, comprehensive plan means the best outcomes for everyone.”
The Irabina centres offer a 'one-stop' shop for the families of children with Autism, with on site pediatricians, diagnostic teams, speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, behaviour management, parent training, social skills programs, adolescent services, ABA and ESDM therapy, and school holiday programs.
Irabina offers services in Pakenham, Bundoora, Bayswater and Cardinia covering a large portion of the Victorian population and they are the only organisation offering comprehensive Autism services.
Members of the Irabina team visited the worldleading Marcus Autism Center (Atlanta, Georgia) where they trained on intensive behavioural intervention models for the treatment of severe behaviours in young people with ASD. The team has brought what they learnt in this training back to their centres in Australia.
Jose Molina - Clinical Services Manager, Irabina Services Jose is a Clinical Psychologist and Member of the Australian Psychological Society. Jose holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology, and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. Jose is also a certified therapist for the Early Start Denver Model. Jose also enjoys spending time with his family hiking and travelling across Australia.

The Magic of Storytelling by Mary Diamond
S
tories have the ability to transport us to worlds, where we get to be the young wizard, the princess that finally goes to the ball or the hero that saves the world. When we read to ourselves, we step inside the book and are taken on our own magical adventure. When we read to children, the book opens up into our world. With every word and every sentence we can introduce the child to characters and experiences using changes in pitch as well as animated body movements to bring the experiences and characters to life. Children's book authors must have this in mind, when they write their brilliant stories, and in my experience, the more I become the words, the more the children enjoy the story. A great storyteller can prompt children and keep them connected by asking questions about what just happened, or what might happen next. As a storyteller myself, some of the best experiences I have had are the ones where I can interact with the children, when I know I have their attention and I feel their anticipation. Through storytelling, we can teach children about choices and decision making. We can show them the strengths of friendship and forgiveness. We can show them that being yourself is the best way to be, and how we are never alone. Reading fictional stories to our children also teaches them about real life. We guide them gently and lovingly through challenges using the characters and experiences that they may relate to and find a connection between their situation and the character's in the story.
I love to read a range of stories, from humorous books that have no pictures that make the adults say and do silly things, to wonderful tales of magic hats that make magic happen wherever they land. Many children have favourite stories like ones of grumpy bears and hungry caterpillars. Storytelling can spark a child's imagination; it can increase their curiosity and help them with brain development. With beautiful illustrations and word play, like rhyming , stories can get children talking about what they are seeing and thinking, and help them understand the patterns of language. So no matter what you're reading, storytelling is a way to bond emotionally with your child and if you're reading to a group, it's a way of bringing them all together and creating magic. Whatever the age or stage of the children, the benefits of storytelling are always great. Whether you are just looking at pictures while slowly turning the pages, or acting out a dramatic scene, stories and storytelling will always open us up to new worlds and transport us into our imaginations. And I think that's magic. (Fairy) Mary Diamond is a children’s entertainer and has 3 beautiful daughters with a passion for the wellbeing of children www.fairymary.com.au.
