ASK A VET with Dr Suze Do dogs dream? The dog's brain is structurally very similar to own own. Dogs also go through the same sleep phases as humans and generate similar electrical brain-wave patterns, supporting the idea that dogs do in fact dream. This will probably come as no surprise to dog owners. It is the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase of sleep that is associated with the dreaming phase. An average sized dog usually starts REM sleep 20 minutes after dozing off. Aside from their eyes moving beneath closed lids, breaths may become shorter and more irregular, muscle twitching and vocalisation may also be observed. As to what your pooch is running after in their sleep- that remains the real mystery! Why does my dog eat grass? Eating grass may be a sign of an upset stomach, especially if your dog also appears to have concurrent gastrointestinal (GI) signs such as a reduced appetite, dullness and/or vomiting. Eating grass in these instances may be a way for your dog to relieve these symptoms. If your pet is demonstrating GI symptoms it is advisable to visit your local vet for a thorough health check to establish potential causes for any upsets. It is important to note, if your dog is fit and healthy and has the occasional graze there is no need to be alarmed, dogs are omnivores meaning they eat both plant and animal matter so grass eating is safe and some dogs eat grass simply because they like it! I adopted a kitten from a friend, when should I think about getting her vaccinated? Kittens can be vaccinated from 8 weeks of age. It is always a good idea to get any new pet thoroughly checked by your local veterinarian soon after joining the household and this may occur before 8 weeks. The purpose of this first visit is to ensure your new family member is enjoying optimal health. It is also a great opportunity to check that your new pet is receiving an appropriate diet for it's life stage as well as running through important health information such as worming and flea prevention. Denise Mitchell holds a Diploma of Children's Services, and a Diploma of Applied Chemistry and has successfully combined the two in her role as Childcare Manager at KewNLC. She has been helping children to experiment for many years, and is passionate in introducing science to children in the preschool years in a practical, fun way using common household materials. She often conducts School Holiday programs, and both cooking and Science form an important part of the Shoestring Plus programs for 3-5 year olds held at KewNLC on Weekday afternoons.
