FIVE MINUTES WITH Anna Tibb
Kindergarten Director, Preshil
q Preshil Kindergarten recently received a rating of 'exceeding' in the National Quality Standards Assessment and Rating. What do you see as the key reasons for achieving this rating? We are extremely proud of receiving exceeding the national quality standards. Our progressive approach to education and our commitment to offering a program which builds confidence and a lifelong love for learning ensures that each and every child is valued as unique and capable. The children in our care feel a sense of belonging in their environment, and are given opportunities to build on creativity, imagination, investigation and conceptual thinking. We have been recognised for offering a program that places compassion and social justice at the heart of the curriculum. q What makes the Preshil Kindergarten program so unique? We strongly believe that it is a combination of highly qualified and experienced educators, together with exceptionally high staff-child rations that provides a unique platform for learning and teaching in the kindergarten. Our natural bush setting offers a unique educational experience for young children to explore, imagine, create and develop critical thinking skills. Children's learning in these spaces allows them to connect to the natural world and increases their confidence and conceptual understanding and imbues a deep respect for their natural environment. We have a beautiful environment in which we can be flexible in our delivery of the program, making use of incredible space both indoors and outdoors. q What do you see as the main benefits to offering a kindergarten program within a school setting? As an Early Years educator with over 24 years' experience working in kindergartens and schools, there are enormous benefits for children to be attending kindergarten in a school setting such as at Preshil. The continuity of teaching and learning for our students is a huge advantage. Documentation and observations of the child can be shared amongst educators, and a child's learning profile can begin to take shape. This ensures that key elements of a child's learning are captured and celebrated continuously as they progress through the school. The unique style of collaborative teaching offers educators a wonderful resource, which inevitably supports the child's learning. Across the week, our students also have access to a number of different specialist lessons with the primary school teachers, such as French, Creative Dance, Music, Sport, Philosophy and Bush Kinder. q How do you see your role in supporting children's learning and readiness for school? Young children need to be able to develop the skills necessary for building relationships and developing a positive self-image where they can view themselves as valued members of a learning community. Children need to develop resilience and self-awareness in order to thrive in a busy classroom, whilst being supported by educators who will guide them to be active participants in their own learning. School readiness is about feeling safe, secure and connected to peers and teachers. Only then can children's learning really flourish. As educators, we need to encourage children to question and take risks, and help them to discover passions and interests which will ignite their love for learning. Whilst we recognise that young children need opportunities to develop their literacy and numeracy in kindergarten, it is their social and emotional skills that will really support them in navigating more formal learning in school.

ASK A VET with Dr Suze How often should I wash my dog? If you have a healthy dog with no skin problems, then you can probably get away with never washing your dog at all! However, speaking from personal experience, most dogs will at some point roll around in something you do not want brought back to the house! Healthy dogs only need to be washed if they are dirty or starting to smell but there is no harm in more frequent bathing. If your dog has a history of skin problems or allergies, then it's best to discuss these details with your veterinarian. Is it OK to use human shampoo on dogs? The short answer is NO.There are so many products on the market for both humans and dogs it can be easy to assume there is not much difference between the two, however here are a couple of reasons why it is preferable to use a product formulated for your canine friend. Dogs and humans have different skin pH balances. Dogs have a more neutral skin pH balance between 6.2-7.4 and human skin has a more acidic pH balance of 5.5-5.6.This thin acid layer plays an important role of protecting the top layer of skin from external pathogens which can be bacterial, fungal, parasitic or viral in nature. Maintaining the correct pH balance is critical for effective protective function. This acid layer also helps retain moisture in the body by absorbing water and reducing water loss from the skin through evaporation. Bathing washes this protective acid layer away.To counter this, many shampoos and soaps will contain moisturising agents that temporarily protect the skin while the acid layer replenishes its self. Using human shampoo on dogs can disrupt this acid layer, reducing its protective function. It can leave your pet's skin feeling dry, leading to scratching and abrasions which make the skin vulnerable to infection. Canine skin is three times thinner that human skin and more sensitive to harsh chemical products. Did you know‌ The average cat can spend 16 hours sleeping and up to 50% of their awake time grooming?!
