ASK A VET with Dr Suze Why does my dog eat grass? Eating grass may be a sign of an upset stomach, especially if your dog also appears to have concurrent gastrointestinal (GI) signs such as a reduced appetite, dullness and/or vomiting. Eating grass in these instances may be a way for your dog to relieve these symptoms. If your pet is demonstrating GI symptoms it is advisable to visit your local vet for a thorough health check to establish potential causes for any upsets. It is important to note, if your dog is fit and healthy and has the occasional graze there is no need to be alarmed, dogs are omnivores meaning they eat both plant and animal matter so grass eating is safe and some dogs eat grass simply because they like it! Why does my dog keep licking me? Dogs will lick people for a number of reasons. To look at why dogs lick, we have to look back to their puppy origins. From the moment they are born, licking is a lifeline as well as a form of communication. The mother will lick her pups to stimulate them to breathe and for the first few weeks of life to help with toileting and keeping her pups clean. Pups will often lick around their mother's mouths either for attention or food, as adults, this licking around the mouth is seen as a submissive behaviour. Your dog may be licking you for similar reasons, you are part of his pack and so it may be that this is your dog's way of getting your attention, showing affection or communicating a particular need. Licking releases pleasurable endorphins which gives dogs a feeling of comfort. If your dog is constantly licking themselves beyond normal grooming levels and causing self trauma it may be a sign of boredom, anxiety or there may be an underlying injury or allergy. In these cases it is worth speaking to your veterinary healthcare professional. It is wrong to make my dog wear winter clothing? There is nothing “wrong with dogs wearing clothing as long as they are not forced to wear something they are uncomfortable in and are supervised. For certain breeds such as greyhounds, smaller dogs and older pets, it may actually benefit them to have an extra layer to keep out the cold. Dr. Susanna Gamage BVSc MRCVS has over a decade of international veterinary experience and is the founding director of Dr. Suze - My Visiting Vet. If you have general pet question you would like answered by Dr. Suze please email susanna@drsuzemyvisitingvet.com.au. Please note the information in this article is of a general nature and is not intended to be a substitute for professional healthcare advice. If you have specific concerns about your pet, you should always seek advice directly from your veterinary healthcare practitioner.
