Macca the Alpaca by Matt Cosgrove Macca is a small, kind and friendly alpaca. He spends his days splashing in puddles and chasing butterflies ... until he runs head-first into Harmer - a big, unkind llama who is never, ever friendly. Can brave little Macca teach that bully of a llama a very important lesson? Mum at School by Eric Veille The first day of school can be tough. Sometimes you need your mum to hang around. Then, before you know it, she's cutting and pasting and joining in. But Mum snores during nap time and keeps everyone awake. She forgets to raise her hand and gets stuck in the play equipment. Perhaps Mum is too big for school after all? These are gorgeous new picture story books for the 3-6 age group that we all fell in love with.

In this issue of FIVE MINUTES WITH we speak with Dario Canale, longstanding Optometrist at Ashburton Eyecare in High Street, Ashburton. Dario has a passion for children's vision, in particular during the formative years of early primary school. You are very much a part of the local community for a long time, tell us more Ashburton Eyecare has been serving the local population of Ashburton & surrounds for their visual needs continuously for 53 years. During that time we have become an integral part of High Street life. Ashburton is a close-knit community, in which it is a pleasure to be a part. Many of the Primary School children I first saw are now well into University and maintaining comfortable, clear vision. What makes you different from other Optometrists? At Ashburton Eyecare, we have a tight team containing all the expertise you will require for primary eyecare. Our standards are high and our appointments are thorough – we take the time to get to know you and your requirements. We genuinely enjoy what we do, using our knowledge and training to ensure we commit to a high quality service for you and your family. It's eyecare as it should be. Are children's eyes really that different? Children's bodies and minds are rapidly changing. To properly assess a child's vision requires an additional understanding of the education, development, and visual demands placed upon them in today's modern world. What typical symptoms do Primary School children present with? Children with visual concerns often present with these symptoms: · Blurry vision · Headaches · Sore eyes · Rapidly tiring · Difficulty concentrating How can you help? At Ashburton Eyecare, we understand children's vision. We have available therapies to decrease the rate at which children become short-sighted (myopia control), as well as offering vision training when appropriate.

READING THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD After many years of practice in the area of paediatric optometry, I have realized that the requirements of a child's visual system - the way it functions, the demands placed upon it - differ from an adult in many ways. In early primary school, a child learns to read and write, so that they may utilize these skills to learn more effectively in the latter primary years. First we learn to read, then we read to learn. Reading well, reading efficiently, without undue strain, fatigue or blur, is not a given for many children. Eyes need to co-ordinate and focus, and the visual data needs then to be interpreted and processed by the brain. Children are our future. A thorough examination with a properly trained behavioural optometrist can ensure your child sees the world as best they can - nothing less is acceptable. Bookings for comprehensive eye examinations for children may be made with Dario, Optometrist.
