ASK A VET with Dr Suze How old is my cat in human years? You may have heard the popular theory that one cat year is the equivalent to seven human years. In reality, the relationship between cat years and human years is not so linear. Cats mature more rapidly than humans during their first two years of life. A 12 month old cat can be equated to a human aged 15 years, and a two year old cat is more like a human aged 24. After the age of two, a cat ages approximately four human years for each passing calendar year, meaning a six year old cat would be approximately 40 in human years. This direct translation of cat years to human years is not wholly scientific but it does help with our perspective when assessing age related health concerns such as arthritis and kidney failure. Does my dog understand what I am saying? Studies show dogs process words and their meaning in the left hemisphere of the brain and use the right hemisphere to interpret emotion, similar to how humans process language. They are able to differentiate between what we say and how we say it, “good dog” stated in a praising tone triggers the reward centre of the brain. The same words repeated in a dull manner and your dog will know they are not being genuinely praised. Equally, laughing whilst telling your pet to stop licking your face is a sure way to have the opposite effect! The average trained dog can learn up to 165 words. Dogs are the only non primate animal to seek out human eye contact. The right side of the human face displays emotions more faithfully so when communicating, humans adopt a “left gaze bias”. Dogs also demonstrate this trait but only when looking at human faces, not other dogs. After thousands of years of co-existing dogs have developed the ability to interpret our verbal as well as visual cues. Fun Animal Fact: “Cream Puff ” from Texas USA holds the Guinness world record for the oldest cat ever at a ripe age of 38 years and 3 days! The average feline lifespan is generally 12 to 18 years.

His Name Was Walter by Emily Rodda This is a gorgeous story for both girls and boys aged 8-12. A fairytale In the tradition of Beauty and the Beast, but from the perspectives of a young man in search of belonging, and a modern day school boy who is entranced with the adventure, this divine book, suited to read-aloud storytelling is highly recommended.

Unicorn (and Horse) by David Miles and Hollie Mengert An enjoyable picture book for very young children, this entertaining story, packed with forty-eight pages of hilarious illustrations and deadpan wit, is a funny yet endearing lesson on envy and friendship with one essential truth: happiness comes from something more important than pink cupcakes.

The Bear and the Piano (sound book) by David Litchfield One day in the forest, a young bear cub finds something he'd never seen before. 'What could this strange thing be?' he thought. Shyly, he touches it with his stubby paws ... Thus he embarks on a journey that takes him away from his home to a new and wonderful land, where beautiful sounds fill the air and fame and riches hang ready for the taking. The city is everything the bear has ever dreamed of, but deep down something tugs as his heart ...

Pages & Co.:Tilly and the Bookwanderers by Anna James Since her mother's disappearance, Tilly has found comfort in stories at Pages & Co., her grandparents' bookshop. But when her favourite characters, Anne of Green Gables and Alice from Wonderland, appear in the shop, Tilly's adventures become very real. Not only can she follow Anne and Alice into their thrilling worlds, she discovers she can bookwander into any story she chooses. Tilly's new ability could even help her solve the mystery of what happened to her mother all those years ago. Recommended for ages 8-12.
