She also hopes the app will drive a change in the culture surrounding kids' birthdays. Her market research has shown that a lot of mums and dads feel overwhelmed by stuff and that their kids have too many toys. Over the years I have had the privilege of assessing and assisting many of the local primary school children in Burwood & Ashburton. Having two children in primary school myself, I understand from a parent's perspective just how much there is to juggle in a child's life, with respect to health and well-being. We all need to understand that children rarely complain to adults about difficulties with their vision, so routine checks are important. When I examine children, I always keep in mind the concept of “clear, comfor table vision”. Sometimes a child may see quite well, however may have great strain or effort in maintaining that vision. This reduction in reliable vision (visual efficiency) can be an inhibitor to effective learning, concentration, reading and writing. Sometimes visual inefficiency may manifest as b e h av i o u r a l d i f fi c u l t i e s i n t h e s c h o o l environment or lead to a decrease in the child's willingness to engage in the school setting. Symptoms that a child exhibiting visual inefficiency may present with could include: · Headaches · Tired eyes · Inability to concentrate · Excessive blinking · Variable vision

The visual system is quite complex. It starts with the eyes and ﬁnishes in the brain. It would be more accurate to say that we see with our brains, not our eyes, although of course we need both! Once clear and comfortable vision is achieved, this opens the door for effective visual data collection, which the brain can then process. We call this aspect of the visual system “Visual Information Processing (VIP)”. VIP can also be a sticking point for many children, especially whilst learning to read & write. Reading is a complicated endeavour for a young child and requires many things to work together: clear vision, good visual efﬁciency and good visual information processing. Children will spend the early years of primary school learning to read and write. They will then spend the rest of their school and working lives using those skills to learn about the world around them.To make this basic transition, your child needs their visual system to be working and co-ordinating optimally.

First we learn to read, then we read to learn. If your child has reduced visual efďŹ ciency or eye co-ordination, it is often possible to strengthen eye muscles using very speciďŹ c exercises which allow your child to train themselves out of the problem. Exercises are recommended based on their value for each different condition. A paediatric Optometrist can provide comprehensive VIP assessments. Where approriate, a vision report can be provided to

aid teachers or other health professionals who may be involved in the care of your child. Remember, your child often won't tell you if they are experiencing difďŹ culties with their vision - it's up to parents to take the initiative and have their children assessed with an Optometrist who understands a child's visual system.

KEW HIGH STREET TURNed INTO ART GALLERY, FOLLOWING 'WHAT I LOVE ABOUT KEW' PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION All around Kew, budding photographers had been getting busy, capturing what they love about the suburb in a bid to win the inaugural 'What I Love About Kew' photography competition.

The competition also encouraged young and old to step away from their screens and into the natural and urban spaces of Kew, where they can engage with a local and thriving community. The Kew High Street turned into an informal art gallery, showcasing the work of the ﬁnalists in shop windows, following the announcement of winners on September 1.

With three categories and $3000 in prizes up for grabs, photographers as young as 8 were using their talents to showcase Kew in the local community.

Entrants did not have to be residents of Kew but must submit a photograph that showed what they love about Kew. The competition was created by the Kew Junction Business Association to highlight and promote the local area, and bring people back to the local shopping precinct. Con Barbayannis, President of the Kew Junction Business Association said “This competition gives us a chance to highlight our local precinct, and to give credit to all the wonderful people and places that make up Kew.”

ASK A VET with Dr Suze Is it true dogs can only see in black and white? To answer this question fully it is important to quickly review how the mammalian eye works. Light enters the eye through the pupil (the black spot you see in the centre of someone's eye when you look at them) and onto a layer of light sensitive cells at the back of the eye called the retina. The retina then sends light signals via the optic nerve to the visual cortex of the brain for interpretation, allowing us to see. The retina contains two main types of light receptor cells: 1. Rods - which detect light and dark 2. Cones – which are able to detect colour Dogs have 20% less cone receptor cells than humans. Human cone cells can register blue, green and red, allowing us to see 1 million shades of colour. Dog cone receptor cells can only register blue and yellow so they can only see around 10,000 shades of colour within this range, lacking the ability to see in the green and red range. Interestingly, the most popular colour dog toy is red, so if your dog runs right past the red toy that you threw for him/her at the dog park, they may not be having a “special moment” but simply having a hard time discriminating between the red toy and the green grass as to a dog, this would all look the same. So dogs can see in colour but their range is limited to shades of yellow, blue, and grey. Do not despair at your pooch's visual colour limitations, dogs have more rod receptors than humans, this and a few other ocular adaptations allow dogs to see better in the dark. Also, let us not forget their amazing ability to hear and their superior sense of smell!

How do I check my pet for fleas? Using a fine toothed comb, brush the fur around the base of your pet's tail ensuring to include the base of the hair shaft near the skin. Place any debris collected with your comb onto a damp white paper towel. If the debris leaves brown or red smears on the damp towel your pet is positive for “flea dirt”. KIDS AT THE DE CASTELLA RUN

The 38th de Castella Run was held on a clear crisp Sunday morning along the Boulevard in Kew at the end of August.While the adults, teenagers and older children were enjoying the views of the Yarra River and City in the distance, the younger children also had an opportunity to have fun and do some physical activity.

The event is hosted by the Old Xaverians' Athletic Club and raises money for the Indigenous Marathon Foundation. Rob de Castella set the world marathon record in 1981 at the Fukuoka Marathon in Japan, and won the World Marathon Championship in Helsinki in 1983. He won gold medals in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games in 1982 in Brisbane, and in 1991 in Edinburgh, and he competed in four Olympic Games. Rob established the Indigenous Marathon Project in 2009 to train Australian indigenous people to run in the New York City Marathon, the world's largest marathon. The Foundation evolved from this when he realized that the discipline and hard worked involved in training for a marathon could be extended beyond running. The IMF supports these indigenous marathon runners to develop health and l e a d e r s h i p p ro g r a m m e s i n t h e i r l o c a l communities.

Nick Bowden and his crew from Run Ready had a series of activities to teach the children various physical skills and show them that being active can be fun. They were held on the tennis courts at the Xavier junior school in Kew, Burke Hall. The kids then ﬁnished off their session with the Kids' Dash down the ﬁnishing straight of the main event. This gave them the grand feeling of being a part of the whole occasion.

At the de Castella Run, Rob congratulated all participants, whether elite athletes, Sunday morning walkers or young children, for becoming involved. He emphasized the importance of physical activity to improve overall health, not just of the body, but the mind as well. Rewards are greater when trying something that is a little difﬁcult, rather than easy. Christopher Worsnop

KIDS CORNER Density - Oil/Syrup/Water What to do * Half fill a clear glass with water * Add a drop of blue food dye * Add a squirt of vegetable oil * Add a drizzle of golden syrup or honey Different liquids have different densities, so you will find that the yellow oil layer sits on top, and the syrup layer sinks to the bottom. You can add further layers like baby oil, strawberry syrup, cream etc and see what happens. If you drop a grape into the glass, it will sit on top of the syrup layer. A cork will sit on top of the oil layer and a lego will sit on top of the water (fake lego will sit on the oil layer) Even after shaking, the layers return to their order. This is because of the relevant densities of the liquids. 26

She has been helping children to experiment for many years, and is passionate in introducing science to children in the preschool years in a practical, fun way using common household materials. She often conducts School Holiday programs, and both cooking and Science form an important part of the Shoestring Plus programs for 3-5 year olds held at KewNLC on Weekday afternoons.
