READING THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD After many years of practice in the area of paediatric optometry, I have realized that the requirements of a child's visual system - the way it functions, the demands placed upon it - differ from an adult in many ways. In early primary school, a child learns to read and write, so that they may utilize these skills to learn more effectively in the latter primary years. First we learn to read, then we read to learn. Reading well, reading efficiently, without undue strain, fatigue or blur, is not a given for many children. Eyes need to co-ordinate and focus, and the visual data needs then to be interpreted and processed by the brain. Children are our future. A thorough examination with a properly trained behavioural optometrist can ensure your child sees the world as best they can - nothing less is acceptable. Bookings for comprehensive eye examinations for children may be made with Dario, Optometrist.

In this issue of FIVE MINUTES WITH, we speak with Rosa Kang, director of Latitude Music Studios. Rosa, an accomplished pianist and violinist has over 15 years of education experience and a masters degree in teaching under her belt. The creation of Latitude Music Studios comes from a genuine passion and fervent desire to give students a quality music education. q What is the story behind the creation of Latitude Music Studios? In Australia currently, there is no mandate for instrumental teachers to have formal qualifications or training in their instrument, nor in teaching. Playing an instrument is a highly sophisticated and complicated art form that takes years of diligence to master and students deserve to be taught by people who understand how to communicate this in the best way. I wanted to establish a place in which students could trust that they would get the best music education, tailored to their individual goals. I worked and researched, for several years to bring Latitude Music Studios to fruition. q What distinguishes Latitude Music Studios from other music schools? Music schools are full of people who are excellent musicians. That's important but it's not enough, because playing an instrument well, and teaching it well are entirely different skills. The teachers at Latitude Music Studios are all experienced in music education. We give them strong foundations and a great technical toolkit using dynamic evidence based student-centred methods. When students have autonomy in their learning this fosters progress which goes hand in hand with engagement and enjoyment. q What are the facilities like at Latitude Music Studios? Our studios have been designed by the acoustic engineers who are behind the State Theatre and Hamer Hall, amongst many other iconic sound venues. Form and function for an optimal learning experience have driven the design. We also have a library full of resources for students and teachers and we house five Kawai Professional series pianos. q What are the benefits of learning an instrument? Playing an instrument has shown to be one of the only activities that practically engages every area of the brain at once. Practising strengthens those brain functions, allowing us to apply that strength to other activities. Studies have shown musicians to be more adept at areas of numeracy, languages, response times, analytical skills and much more. On top of that, music is a universal language, it’s fun and it brings people together. q What kinds of things should I be looking for in a music teacher? What methods of teaching they use, and why they use them. Make sure they're not always touring and that they have a thorough understanding of music exam methods and procedure. Enquire whether they offer ensemble and masterclass opportunities and make sure they teach aural, theory and sight-reading skills concurrently whilst teaching the technical aspects of the instrument.

KIDS BOOK CORNER Book Review by Roxanne DYMOCKS CAMBERWELL

2 FREE TRIALS FROM 3 YEARS OLD SELF DEFENCE PHYSICAL FITNESS

Life on Mars by Jon Agee This is a gorgeous hardback book for children to treasure. It tells the story of a young astronaut sure there is life to be found on Mars. But when he arrives, equipped with a package of cupcakes as a gift, he sees nothing but an almost barren planet. Finally, he spies a single flower and packs it away to take back to Earth as proof that there is indeed life on Mars. But as he settles in for the journey home, he cracks open his cupcakes - only to discover that someone has eaten them all! Highly recommended for children around 3-6 years of age. Roxanne
