ASK A VET with Dr Suze It's time to get your pet spring ready… …starting with hairballs, or if you want to get fancy - trichobezoars; “tricho” meaning hair and “bezoar” meaning a mass in the stomach or intestines. Cat owners who have had first hand experience with hairball will tell you they are far from ball-like and more like elongated tubes. This is because they get squished by the oesophagus as they travel up to their final destination - most likely your carpeted floor or other soft home furnishing! Why do cats produce hairballs and are they normal? Cats are fastidious creatures that spend approximately 30%-50% of their waking day grooming. Specialised barbs on their tongues help remove loose hair from their coat. The hair that is swallowed either traverses your cats' digestive system and ends up in your cat's litter tray or accumulates in the stomach to form hairballs. Hairballs are very normal and a sign of healthy grooming habits. Some cats are more prone to hairballs than others. Contributing factors include; hair length, grooming frequency, diet, climate and environment. Cats who live in regions such as Melbourne with four clear seasons, will often grow thicker coats in winter and shed more in the spring and summer as their environment gets hotter. More shedding means your cat is more likely to swallow more hair whilst grooming resulting in more frequent hairballs in the spring and summer months. What can be done to reduce the incidence of hairballs? Regular brushing of your cat's coat will help remove excess loose hair, reducing the amount of hair consumed. Special diets and laxatives that can also help with the passage of hair through your cat's digestive system. If your cat displays the symptoms of coughing up a hairball (coughing, heaving, vomiting) without actually producing a hairball, this could be a symptom or a more serious blockage and you should make an appointment with your local veterinary healthcare professional. Hot tip: If you've let your pet's flea protection slip over winter, make sure you get them up to speed before spring hits. The warm, moist spring weather provides perfect conditions for fleas to hatch and populations can increase rapidly.
