Grandvue Estate Playground Pakenham - Cardinia Council We are spoilt with a lot of great playgrounds in Casey and Cardinia, and one our family favourites is the Grandvue Estate playground in Pakenham. My five and three year old love climbing up high (and are confined and safe) and pretend the bridges and cubby’s are goals, schools, ships and houses! There are great views (it’s up on a hill) and also plenty of grass space for the bigger kids and teens to play ball sports or spread out with their electronics. There’s also BBQs, seating, shade and a small amphitheatre!

KUDOS to a true Champion! Pakenham father of two, Michael Soutter, has a great presence around our community - he’s been a participant in Relay for Life Casey for several years, is the founder, head coach and committee member of the Pakenham Road Runners, and inbetween has started a Personal Training Business ‘Soutter on the Run’. He impressed us all again, on Sunday February 3, running 100km (67 laps) around the Lakeside Lake. The Pakenham Road Runners and running community were out in force, joining in and cheering him on. Michael’s 100km run raised $5k for cancer research, and his relay for life team ‘The Physicals’ have raised over $6,400 for this year so far. School Refusal We've all been there, when our mornings just don't seem to run smoothly and no-one seems to want to get ready on time, let alone go to school that day. Meltdowns, favourite socks/dress/shoes not ready to be worn, fights with brother/sister/parent, sleep ins, and the list goes on! Some mornings it can be really tough to get the tribe ready. But what about when it becomes a bit more of a regular thing. Suddenly not wanting to go to school has been a few days in a row or the behaviours are becoming just a bit too regular; or maybe that sore tummy/headache is becoming more persistent. When should we be concerned that it might be more? School refusal usually has a more serious emotional problem behind it such as the fear of attending school or anxiety about leaving home. It's different from truancy (or not wanting to go and participate in a sport lesson!) Symptoms might include crying, panicking, throwing tantrums, being aggressive or threatening self-harm. Research indicates that between 1-5% of school age children suffer from school refusal, with children aged 5-6 years and 10-11 years most affected. Children who suffer from school refusal might also be dealing with depression or anxiety disorders. What can you do? Help is out there. Chat to your school teacher as first port of call, preferably without your child present. Is something else going on for your child? Schools also have others that you can approach such as the school nurse, a welfare officer, perhaps a 18

speech pathologist. If this pattern/cycle of school refusal continues, then you might need some external assistance. This could be a family support worker sitting alongside you and your family and offering one on one support and establishing and practising techniques for dealing with anxiety or anger. They might help you set up routines for night time or morning schedules. They can be an advocate for you and assist you in talking to the school and establishing back to school plans. If you feel the use of technology might assist, there are plenty of apps available: Breathe, Visual timer, Fluid Monkey, headspace, Mindshift, MoodGym, BRAVE, Calm Counter.

We all know how overwhelming and challenging parenting can be – there isn't a manual! However, there is plenty of help in the community to assist us, you just have to reach out. Gen Dawson is has a background in education and has been working in the community for over ten years. Gen is a mother of two (adult) children and soon to be grandmother

Managing our children – Back to School

by Michael Kelly and Mirelle Sutton

notice that my children set similar rules for my grandchildren that I set for them years ago. It is imperative in the 21st Century that we move with the times and contemporise our boundaries. This means: limiting the amount of screen time for children (iPads, TV, computer); ensuring that they access the Internet in full view of the family (in the family room or kitchen etc); ensuring that household chores are completed before screen time/games/leisure activities; making sure that our young people are safe by having open conversations about social media.

One of the most challenging times for parents can be once school goes back. Settling back into routines can be fraught. It is important to recognise that over the holiday period; young people get used to not having the responsibility of homework or the pressure of studies or even the pressure of peer groups. As parents we want the best for our kids and there are some golden rules that might just help. Just remember that as parents we do not have to agree with everything our children say or do. In addition, it is important to recognise the two things that are our jobs as parents: to love our children unconditionally and to provide boundaries. Sometimes we are the most unpopular parents because we set rules that seem “unfair” for our children. Quite often however this is the right thing to do. As a parent of adult children, I now 22

Do you know that online games are just like chat rooms? Even though they are playing with their “friends” they are visible to the Internet and others can join. Games are good until they get too rough. A game of football can be fun but you can also get hurt. An online game can be fun, but you can also fall prey to others on line. Bullying can occur in the playground, in the street and on line. So, part of our providing boundaries is our desire to keep our kids safe. Sometimes being tough on kids can be difficult and this can cause tension in the home. Open discussion can help with this and from experience when I am asked “why” my answer is more often than not “because I am your parent and your safety is paramount”. Have the discussion and listen but allow your instinctive protective nature to question the world around you and keep you and your kids safe. Michael Kelly and Mirelle Sutton work together as Psychotherapists and specialise in supporting families and young people. www.ayphelp.com
