Manningham Hello and Welcome to our April 2016 Issue, we wish you all a great month and I hope you enjoy reading our April 2016 issue. April is such a busy month we have just celebrated Easter and now we look forward to the joys of school holidays and what to do. I am always thinking of what we can do to keep our son busy over the holidays. Here are some ideas that may help you. Westerfolds sports centre 4th-8th of April, 45 minute swimming sessions, Pre-school and School Ages www.westerfolds.com.au. It might be a great idea to go outdoors and have some fun with the kids while our weather is still enjoyable and what better way to have fun than to go to your local park and enjoy the sunshine while its still out and have a kick of a ball or to just enjoy watching your children play on the equipment. You might want to pack a lunch or have a bbq outdoors. We are very lucky in Manningham we have the most amazing parks and outdoor spaces. Easy ways to share Aboriginal culture with children Australian Aboriginal people may be the oldest continuous culture on the planet, with their DNA found in Africa and through Asia dating as far back as 70,000 years* and within Australia for at least 40,000 years. Our Aboriginal history is a remarkable story of resilience and the culture is filled with fascinating stories of survival, ingenious land management techniques, complex spirituality and societal structures and around 700 language groups. They successfully survived through European settlement which saw the end of traditional life and the introduction of new diseases, as well as government enforced racial genocide. Children have a right to learn about the Aboriginal cultural heritage of our country, and when exposed to traditional stories, their usual response is one of pure fascination and intrigue. Manningham is lucky to have some of the most significant Wurundjeri Aboriginal Heritage sites in Melbourne and a variety of local cultural activities are offered annually, so sharing Aboriginal history and culture with children in Manningham is easy! Here are just a few of the cultural sharing activities happening locally. 'Wurundjeri Stories' Trail at Pound Bend This free trail walk near the Pound Bend Tunnel shares the history of the region captured within seven interpretive signs designed by Wurundjeri Elders, including stunning historical photography and artwork. Each sign includes a “Bunjil's Challenge�, a thought provoking activity for you to enjoy with your children. Local Indigenous Events Manningham Council presents Indigenous activities during National Heritage Week (April/May), this year presenting Wurundjeri Elder-led walks at Bolin Bolin Billabong and Currawong Reserve, both Aboriginal heritage sites. Other activities such as Dreamtime story-telling, ceremonial events, cultural awareness training, and Indigenous arts projects are also offered during National Reconciliation Week (May/June) and NAIDOC Week (July) annually. Manningham is also home to the Annual Melbourne Didgeridoo and Cultural Festival at Wombat Bend, Lower Templestowe, an event rich with Indigenous music, dance and arts on Saturday 9 April, 12noon – 10pm. Sharing Culture at School or Kinder There are many resources available to Manningham schools and kindergartens to help explore Aboriginal culture and history within an educational setting, including incursions with cultural educators, excursions to sacred sites or participation in Council run reconciliation activities. Connecting Families in Bulleen A pop up playgroup for vulnerable children in Bulleen has been announced as one of 13 initiatives across Victoria to receive funding grants through the State Government’s Maternal and Child Health Service Innovation Fund. The playgroup will be hosted at Bulleen Plaza as part of a joint partnership between Manningham Council and community organisation Doncare, and will align with Council’s Live Well in Bulleen project. Research in the Live Well in Bulleen project shows a number of key challenges for the area of Bulleen, including high levels of cultural diversity and social isolation, as well as a lack of access to essential services and community programs. Equipped with an information kiosk, on-site staff and a wide range of resources at hand, the popup playgroup will provide a welcoming and supportive environment for local families and help build a more connected community.
