ŸWear comfortable, loose fitting clothing to ensure good circulation. Natural fibres are best. Keep warm – cover your lower back and abdomen and protect yourself from the elements. This will help support the embryo and reduce the risk of miscarriage. ŸGentle exercise such as walking is the best option and is recommended to improve circulation, reduce stress and promote relaxation. Avoid abdominal and strong back exercises. Do not get exhausted!
I
n vitro fertilisation, or IVF as it is widely known, is a commonly used procedure. It is not uncommon to go through multiple cycles, which means more hormone injections and blood tests, more bloating and headaches and more hoping and waiting, possibly only to have more disappointment. In my clinics, I have seen women doing their ninth and tenth cycles and they are rarely pillars of health! It is a physical and emotional roller coaster, with so many variables and unknown outcomes, and can be extremely challenging and draining. Each woman confronts different feelings and symptoms each time she goes through another cycle. Here is some simple advice I offer to IVF patients to help reduce symptoms throughout their treatment and increase their chances of success.
ŸEnsure you get good sleep and plenty of it. No heavy lifting or excessive bending. If you are standing on your feet at work all day try to 4
ŸAvoid extremes of hot and cold temperatures. This includes saunas, steam rooms, spas and very hot baths. Swimming in very cold water is not recommended. ŸAvoid exposure to toxic fumes and chemicals. This includes paint fumes, cleaning products and environmental pollution. Eat organic food where possible and drink clean, filtered water. ŸGenerally, mild and blander food is best in smaller portions. This will help reduce any nausea and bloating you may experience. Avoid cold or icy drinks and food – they will take your body more energy to digest. ŸAvoid travel if possible (plane, train and automobile) especially long trips.

EDITORIAL Finally! Someone has designed fitted baby bed linen that works. As new parents all we want is the best and safe option for our precious little ones. However, when it comes to bedding choices and the endless array of products and advice that go with them, it's no wonder we are getting confused. Although some of these products have been designed to reduce the incidence of SIDS, their effectiveness is reduced when we revert back to using blankets that can come loose. Fitted sleeping bags are a wonderful invention but they are not the only answer to a sounds night's sleep. Good old fashioned blankets and sheets are still being used to help settle and keep baby's warm. I like many parents, had succumbed to all the products on the market in an effort to get a better more peaceful nights sleep and none of them seemed to help. What I needed was fitted, easy to use blankets and sheets. So I designed the Cozitot.

The Art of Manifesting
E
ver since the movie “The Secret” was released in 2006 there has been a surge of interest in the law of attraction and the art of manifesting. I have had many experiences in my life confirming this phenomenon and have no doubt about its validity. The idea is that we attract and create what we think about. Earlier this year I went to a Seminar by author, Mike Dooley. Mike has been teaching that “Thoughts Become Things” for the past 20 years. He sheepishly confesses to having a scrap book with pictures of everything he wanted to attract into his life when he was just 23 years old. His mother taught him the art of visualising his goals when he was very young. He desperately wanted to win first place in a Pony Club Gymkhana and after just one week of imagining being presented with that blue ribbon, his vision became a reality. The previous week he had come last! What we picture in our imagination and say to ourselves in our heads has a profound effect on our lives. When we choose to think about what we DO want, instead of what we DON”T want, we stand a much better chance of actually getting it. This concept has been a bit too weird and New-Agey for many people but fascinatingly enough science is starting to prove that our thoughts really do affect the physical world around us. It's now understood that there is an energy field connecting everything and thoughts, expectations and intentions radiate out into that energy field and can affect other

people and even affect objects. A fascinating study exploring the power of intention showed that at the exact instant that one person sent loving, healing thoughts to their partner, the partner's breathing, heart rate and brainwaves changed. This occurred even though the partner was in a remote part of the building in a lead lined room. Focussed thought has also been found to significantly alter the results of random numbers generated by a computer. * As more and more of this research comes to light, I believe we will all become much more mindful of our thoughts and begin to choose them carefully and consciously.

TEMPLESTOWE HOTEL by Alison Burton When my son was in Primary School he had guitar lessons after school every Wednesday at 4pm. The music studio was in the busiest part of Whitehorse Rd in Box Hill. Initially I found it really stressful finding a car park in at that time of day. My thoughts went something like, “I will never get a carpark.” After hearing someone on the radio talk about the art of manifesting car parking spaces I decided to give it a go. As we were turning from Middleborough Rd into Whitehorse Road we would say out loud, “Hail Mary full of grace, thank you for our parking place.” We said it with respect and gratitude. From that day onwards the parking space was always there waiting for us, right in front of the Music School! More often than not there was time left on the metre. It was very cool.

The Importance of Outdoor Play by Lou Harvey-Zahra
A
llow your child to make friends with the 'real' outdoor world. In these days of iThings (e.g. iPhone, iPod, iPad), the three 'i's' of childhood still remain: iMagination, iMitation and the iMpulse to move! These important impulses occur naturally during outside play for children. As a teacher I understand how a wet day timetable, and only indoor play options, affects children's behaviours. Move outdoors to burn off toddler and children's energy levels, and moderate mood swings. Here are some ideas to help: Make your own garden a little haven: create a small veggie patch for your child, or even a few pots. In summer fill a little watering can with the left over bath water, children can then sprinkle on the garden or pots (the wonders of a growing plant). Place a little bird feeder in the garden, children love to feed the birds (and put out their left over unpopular crusts!). Remember a bug catcher for nature's wonders and little pets. Hold a teddy bears' picnic in your garden or local park, to spend lunch time on a blanket under a t re e i s a wonderful th in g! A sandpit with old baking equipment (pattie tins, sieves, pots and pans) to bake with is a great gift for young children (remember the toy diggers too). A simple bowl or bucket of water to float a bark boat, or wash dolly and her clothes, can transform an 18
afternoon play. Like camping? Children love the tent put up outside on a sunny day! Bamboo garden poles tied together to make a tepee (cover with a big blanket or throw rug). A big sheet over the garden table creates a child's haven, a magical outside space. Add some cushions and books (a little snack). A little bike or trike is great for pedal power. Large chalks to draw o n t h e pavement puts a smile on a child's face (and the footpaths!). Old paint brushes and water, to paint the house and garden furniture! A swing set or tree tyre swing - a wonderful gift. A ball is a magical object to a child (imagine moving it with your foot!)
At the end of every day ponder the question, 'did my child play outdoors today?' Follow the simple ideas above for outdoor play, everyday, in simple ways... The 'real' wonders of the world for children are not plastic, electronic, or plugged in. These items can often distance children from 'real' relationships and the 'real' natural world. Make space in your family life to roll down a hill, dig to China, and picnic on the grass, watch a bug, smell the flowers, play in the garden and breathe slowly the fresh 'outdoor' air together!

How can I help my child practise?
by Wendy Brentnall o you've made the decision, arranged some lessons and an instrument and now you want to give your child the best possible start by helping them “practice” at home. 1. Assist in establishing a routine a. Find a time that doesn't clash with favourite activities b. Find a time when your child is not too tired c. Establish expectations but be flexible i.e. if you want to visit your friend today then we can just do your practise later – is that OK?

2. Provide a “space” and time for concentration a. Find a space where your child feels part of the family (not locked away) while they play b. Find a place where their instrument can be permanently set up (making it more accessible) c. Find a place which doesn't clash with other family members, i.e. same room as TV 3. Both attend classes and ensure you know what the goals are to work on each week, OR request a written list (a music diary is VERY useful) of what should be covered at home during the week. a. Initially your child will have no idea what “practise” actually is, so ask the teacher to explain EXACTLY what they expect I Repeat each song 4 times in each hand then twice together ii Complete your theory quiz iii Listen to the backing track iv Choose your concert piece etc. etc. b. Sit with your child when they practise and help them go through in a logical way all the work that is required but do NOT expect perfection instantly! 22
4. DO NOT overdo Practise – you do not want to establish practise as a chore or something they don't enjoy because mum or dad get cranky! a. Be aware that lots of short practise sessions can often be more valuable than one or two LONG sessions as it is the frequent review that helps most. b. If your child is over tired or ill then be flexible about when if at all practise is done. c. If your child loses concentration you are better to switch activities or stop and try again another time
