Hi, It took me a while (a year) to adjust my daily routine to my daughter’s. She attended prep last year and is in grade one this year. I believe I have checked her bag for home tasks quite frequently, well perhaps not daily. But teachers were still not very satisfied with my daughter’s “organisation” skills. I have been ensuring myself to check her bag more frequently, recording down what the teachers what parents to do regarding reading, filling out forms and slipping it back to her school bag, and of course, listening to her sayings on school activities. And yeah! I kind of feel I am on control now. It has taken a whole year! My daughter is attending a local public primary school, which is so different from both my husband’s and my experience, given we are both immigrants. Do you find it hard to keep track of your child’s study too? Don’t give up. We are learning too!

MILKING THE FACTS ON FORMULA Push your pram down any supermarket aisle and you're faced with endless choices of baby formula. Between the marketing claims, the eye-catching packaging, and the confusing labelling, how do parents choose between the good, the bad, and the gimmicks? It is widely accepted that breast milk is the ideal nutrition for any baby, but not everyone can breastfeed. So if that's the case, what should you be looking for? In Australia, there are strict standards surrounding the composition of infant formula, it is in fact, the most regulated food product on the market. All formulas on Australian supermarket shelves are made to contain about the same amount of energy (kilojoules), protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. So what sets one apart from another? Biochemist and CEO of Nature One Dairy, Nick Dimopoulos, explains those common 'buzz words' in a bid to simplify the selection process. Organic: Organic foods are everywhere these days, and that includes formula. So what exactly does that mean? Well, it makes perfect sense that we'd want to give our tiniest treasures the cleanest food possible. But unfortunately, that's not always the case. What makes organic formula different to others is how the base ingredients are farmed. In order for a formula to be deemed, 'certified organic', means the farms where the dairy is sourced, and the vegetables grown for oils, need to meet strict criteria. Put simply, these ingredients are sourced from farms that do not use pesticides or any other form of artificial or synthetic chemicals. Keep in mind, this is an Australian standard, and beware of any so-called organic formulas that are not manufactured locally. Different countries have different standards on what can be deemed organic. Probio cs and Prebio cs: We've all heard of them, but what are they, and what do they mean for our bub? Well it seems they go hand in hand when it comes to good gut health. Probiotics are the 'good' bacteria that, research suggests, keep digestive systems healthy. Prebiotics create the environment to help that good bacteria grow. Prebiotics and probiotics are naturally found in breastmilk, and some strains are added to infant formula. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the most common types of probiotics added. Clinical trials have found that these bacteria could assist in preventing disorders such as colic, eczema, and food allergies. 20

Gold: Gold formulas contain a specific type of 'good fat', specifically, longchain polyunsaturated fatty acids, or LCPUFA's. LCPUFAs, which are naturally occurring in breastmilk, have been found to be crucial in brain and eye development. DHA, Lutein, and ARA are among those proven to be the most beneficial. As both a scientist and a formula producer, Nick advises parents to seek out these key ingredients when selecting formula: ● DHA (also known as Docosahexaenoic Acid): is an omega 3 fatty acid that supports brain development and health. ● Lutein: is a vitamin that maintains healthy cells in the eyes, and supports visual development for babies and toddlers. ● ARA (also known as Arachidonic Acid): is an omega 6 fatty acid that supports brain development during infancy. ● Magnesium: regulates muscle and nerve functions in the body. Nick says as well as basing their decision on a formula's ingredients, parents should also be opting for organic when possible. “Organic formulas mean the ingredients haven't been exposed to pesticides, herbicides or other chemicals during their growth” he says. Nick's team has developed a formulation that includes those vital ingredients, and is made right here in Melbourne. The company has also made a promise that will be music to the ears of anyone who has struggled to find formula stocks in their supermarket. 孩子正在公立的一个小学读书，一年级。这么小的年纪，同学大多也 是纯洁善良的孩子。神奇的是，无论是二十几年前我读书的时期，无论是 读书的哪个阶段，小学，初中，高中，每个班总会有那么一两个同学，比 其他人要更早熟一些，并且用自己的早熟来控制其他孩子。特别是女生之 间，无论天涯海角，只要三个女人就能成一台戏，这种事情我之前是万万 没想到学前班就会发生。 去年有一段时间，女儿回家的时候很爱冲家人发脾气，我们仔细询 问，才从她断断续续的话语里得知，原来班里一个女生，一直是她们小团 体的领头人，这些天她突然决定不跟我女儿一起玩了，也不准她们的小团 体跟我女儿玩。这些话毕竟是从一个学前班孩子口里说出来，我们只能一 边安慰她那就跟其他人一起玩，一边静观事态发展。几周过去，有一天女 儿突然很开心，跟我们说，这一周那个女生没有来上学，团体里的其她女 孩子都来跟女儿道歉，又开始一起玩。我们心里石头放下，却也从此跟女 儿说，不要跟那个女生太经常来往，你不必跟着她们那个团体一起玩。你 可以决定谁做你的朋友。而学期末分班的时候，我们也跟校长反映了这件 事情，表示一年级不想跟这个女同学同班。 后来学校假期，平时很少去学校的我跟学校里的妈妈们聚会，才从不 同的妈妈口里听到了更多消息。比如这个女孩子每天会跟群里的女孩子们 说，哪几个男生今天不乖，不能跟他们一起玩。她要的东西一定要得到， 否则她就哭，班里同学看她哭，什么都让着她。她在男生群里很受欢迎， 她喜欢哪个男生就可以紧紧抱住他不放。她不喜欢学校分配的高年级的伙 伴，老师们让他们给伙伴们画肖像，她让群里另一个女生带她的画回家， 让她在画像的眼睛上画叉叉，表示对这个人的不满。这个举动被另一个女 生的妈妈发现了，急忙劝阻，说这样小伙伴会很伤心的。而且细思极恐的 是，如果这件事情老师追究下来，肇事者很容易撇清关系，毕竟不是她画 的。这种心思出现在学前班孩子身上，我一开始很难相信，但就是明明白 白地发生了。 最近一次见到这群孩子是在他们的运动会，无意中我们看到，她在给 她很喜欢的一个男生按摩肩膀。问这个男生的妈妈怎么回事，怎么一年级 就有这么亲密的举动。那位妈妈说，这个女生很喜欢按摩，经常要给她儿 子按摩，而她儿子也觉得按摩之后肩膀很舒服。我们惊掉下巴，真的是你 还在玩泥巴的时候，别人已经开始在泡仔。 不过我一点都不羡慕这个女孩子。我喜欢自己的孩子的正常，学前班 就是学前班的样子，一年级就是一年级的样子，她或许永远不会成为最受 欢迎的女生，但她也绝对不会对别人施加校园霸凌。看着孩子现在每天上 课开开心心，听她说“以前这个女生总不让我们跟这个人那个人玩，现在 我一年级了，我要决定自己跟谁玩”真的很欣慰。这种虽然还远远没有电 视呈现的校园霸凌的程度，可是让孩子学会我自己一个人也没什么，不需 要任何人的友谊施舍，不必让任何人控制我，这也是必须要的成长吧。 多跟孩子聊聊每天学校发生的事情吧，或许我们的例子是个例，但防 微杜渐，总是好过亡羊补牢。
