Happy New Year Dear Readers, Welcome to 2015 ! We bid a goodbye to 2014 - there was so much to do that we have hardly had time to stop and take a breath. We zoomed up in the sky at Melbourne Star, visited Mrs. Claus at Santa’s Magical Kingdom, my son went bonkers visiting his favourite Superheroes at Sand Sculptures, Frankston, fired up the BBQ and enjoyed the sun as much as we could... Just like us, now everyone must be settling into the routines with kids ‘Back To School’ and mums & dads fighting the Monday blues. The start of this New Year has already got us so busy. We are getting so many calls and enquiries from local businesses and community events in and around Monash and we are just loving it !!! Friends of the Children Foundation The third annual Walk for Monash Children’s Hospital is being held on 1 March at Jells Park, Oaks Picnic Area in Wheelers Hill. The walk raises funds to help purchase vital equipment and improve facilities to ensure the best care is provided to young patients at the hospital. This event has been embraced by the community, patients and their families who have really driven the success of the day. It is fast becoming an iconic fundraising event in the south eastern suburbs. The walk is non-competitive; allowing families to enjoy a leisurely stroll and unite for the hospital in the beautiful surroundings of Jells Park. This year there is a new component of the walk with the addition of a 1km category. This category is open to everyone but inspired by patients at Monash Children’s Hospital who have been training for the past year to complete the 1km course.

- 2015 Walk For Monash Children’s Hospital Families who have been cared for at Monash Children’s Hospital know what a life-line it can be to have a world-class children’s hospital in the south eastern suburbs. Heidi Millier knows only too well the difference having a children’s hospital closer to where her family lives, makes when your child suffers from a chronic illness. Last year Heidi Millier, created team Sonny Days, naming the team after her then 10 month old son, Sonny Millier who has been in-and-out of Monash Children’s Hospital since birth, struggling with life-threatening respiratory illness. Sonny’s home town community of Sale really got behind the team and helped them raise close to $8,000, an amazing achievement! “I never expected that we would have such an incredible response but the community where I live has really got behind it because they all know Sonny.” Heidi said. Heidi and her family and friends are again supporting the walk this year through team Sonny Days. All funds raised this year will help purchase important equipment such as laughing gas to help children in the children’s cancer centre and on the wards cope with pain during procedures. The money will support Monash Children’s Hospital, Monash Children’s Dandenong and Monash Children’s Casey. If you would like to help make a big difference for sick children in our community please register for the 2015 Walk for Monash Children’s Hospital.

First Day of my School.... Being at a home away from home is how I would describe my school on the first day of my school. Refreshed, nervous, excited, curious are the bundle of mixed feelings for both my parents and me on the first day of my school. Preparing for its arrival - buying new academic year books, stationary, school uniform is how I welcome the first day of my school. The transition from one academic year to another by climbing up the ladder of studies is embarked on the first day of my school. Looking forward to meet old pals, making new friends, eagerly waiting to know the new class teacher is the enthusiasm and euphoria on the first day of my school. The wheels of the academic year shall roll with its share of classwork, homework, assignments, projects, mid -terms exams, final exams, taking off on the first day of my school. Oh! I so miss my vacations but so do love my school too and shall embrace its beautiful journey with open arms on the first day of my school. Clean Up Australia Day 2015 Sunday 1 March, 10am-12.30pm Monash residents are encouraged to take part in Clean Up Australia Day, where volunteers pick up rubbish from streets, bushland, parks and waterways. There will be many local sites in Monash where people can volunteer to pick up rubbish. This year, Council is hosting a clean up activity along the bike path that runs near the Monash Freeway in Chadstone. Please wear sturdy shoes. Gloves, rubbish bags, water and sunscreen will be provided to volunteers. Meet at Cnr of Timmings St and Atkinson St, Chadstone (on the opposite side of Timmings Street to the tennis courts. We will meet at this point at 10am and then pick up rubbish along the bike path between Warrigal Road and Huntingdale Road. There will be a 'thank you' community BBQ back at the start location from 11.30am.
