Monash Hello and welcome to our July issue,
In this edition you will find very new features of Your Child in Monash. We are a bilingual magazine now! How exciting! From the back of the magazine, contents are in Chinese, so are the ads. It is the first and only English/Chinese magazine in Melbourne. This is an initiative that recognizes the cultural diversity of our community. If you are supportive of this idea don't forget to like us and tell us on Facebook. If your children are learning Chinese in school, why not encourage them to read the Chinese pages? The articles are quite educational. And yay! Children are having school holiday. It is a nice break for them. But some parents find it hard to keep the children occupied and entertained. And the cold weather is definitely not helping. It is probably time to enrol your child into something they will benefit in the long term. You will find great offers from this magazine from a range of local businesses, art, music, play centres, etc. It is worth having a go. Check out some of their holiday programs too. Playing is good. Learning is better. And you can give your child both during this holiday! I would also like to encourage anyone who likes to write to send us your writing. We support local talented people. National Simultaneous Storytime with Mrs Catherine Andrews National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual campaign organised by the Australian Library and Information Association. The campaign aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Every year one book written by an Australian author and illustrator is read across Australia at the same time. This year Mrs Catherine Andrews, wife of the Premier The Honourable Daniel Andrews MP, visited parents and children at the Monash Public Library at Wheelers Hills, and read them The Brother Quibble. Catherine is a mum of three. She lives in Mulgrave and when her children were little they always came to storytime in Wheelers Hill Library. It is a place full of memories for her and her family. After Catherine read the story, librarian Lilian led the children in singing The Wheelers on the Bus to thank Catherine for her visit. Catherine made herself available for photos with parents. Catherine was also happy to pose for a photo with the editor of Your Child in Monash Rachel Blake. There are more exciting events coming up. Just keep an eye on our What's On in Monash.

Business of the Month Cheeki Botz Play Centre: Where Play Meets Learning Cheeki Botz Playcentre is a new play centre located in Oakleigh South. It has a range of play facilities, such as a children's playground, free play area and sustainability zone. It also caters for birthday parties on second level. Amongst these, the sustainability zone also called Build and Play is the most unique area above all. Build and Play is based on the concept of sustainability. All the toys inside are specifically built to educate children on the idea of alternative power. Firstly children choose a toy, bring it inside and assemble it; they then use this toy to experiment in all the different sections. For example, in solar power test platform, children put the car down on the track and watch how the car runs automatically by having the lights on. In this mini city windmills and lights are generated by solar power and wind power. Children can watch how to control the robot's movement by a mobile phone and make the robots dance or work out by themselves.

Jeffrey is the designer of this zone; he is a Mechanical Engineer graduate from Melbourne University. Jeffrey will show and explain to the children while they experiment. The sustainability zone is open for children aged 7 and above. Children of this age have learnt to certain level of science in school and will have lots of fun learning in this zone. Needless to say, Cheeki Botz stands out from traditional play centres. In this play centre, while older children are learning while playing, your younger ones will have fun sliding down the speedy slide, climbing up the spider web or jumping into the ball pool! And you as a busy parent can sit down and enjoy the light music in the centre while having a clear view of your children playing. Jaclyn, the owner of the play centre, migrated with her family from Singapore to Melbourne in 1989 and speaks fluent English and Chinese. Jaclyn puts a clean play centre on top of her list as no bring-in food (except baby food and food for children with allergies) is allowed in the play centre. If you and your children are hungry, try the home-made food from the CafĂŠ. The coffee is organic and the fries are air-fried. Everybody will be happy in Cheeki Botz Playcentre!

灵活的选择 如果半职的家长也可以选择幼儿园加托儿所，就是不上班的那几天送去幼儿 园（便宜），上班的那几天送去托儿所（贵）。 也有的家长选择家庭日托所（Family day care）加幼儿园。甚至全职家长也可 以这么做。家庭日托所就是有资格证的人在自己家开的托儿所。一般会比幼儿园 便宜，小孩子人数少。家庭日托所有的会提供接送服务，比如接送到最近的幼儿 园一次2刀，幼儿园结束的时候他们会接回家庭托儿所，家长下班再去接孩子回 家。 生日影响入读年份 有一个要注意的是，澳洲对于入读孩子年龄的界定线是在4月30号。比如你孩 子想报读3岁的学前教育，在那一年的4月30号之前已经过了3岁的生日，那就可以 读；反之就不行。有的妈妈反映其实还是有弹性的，如果只是迟了一些天数，不 会差太多，商量一下也是可以入读。但差太多就不行了。 怎么报名 每个区对于怎么报名都有不一样的规定。建议是到区政府网站查询，或者打 电话确认，不要想当然等到孩子快3岁了才准备。大多数区是在孩子2岁到社区护 士检查的时候，社区护士给一张表，家长选择几个最想去的幼儿园，把表寄回 去。然后会回信通知你有没有被选入。通常都是1岁半到2岁前就要选好幼儿园 了。有的一出生就要选。当然托儿所就没这样的规定。 有的区你要跟区政府确认4岁幼儿园的选择，但是自己要单独去幼儿园报名 3岁的班级。所以自己请一定要做好功课。 至于预备班就要去每个学校独立报名。 能否跨区读 答案是可以的。比如你住在两个大区的临界处，特别喜欢另外一个区的幼儿 园，那么你要做的就是也是孩子差不多1岁多2岁的时候联系心仪的的区政府，他 们再邮寄表格给你填写，你寄回去，他们再审批。有的区政府网站上已经有表格 和邮寄地址，那么你下载后再寄过去就可以了。但是要注意的是，区政府一定会 优先考虑在本区居住的孩子，还有空位才会留给非本区的家庭。 私校幼儿园 现在很多私校不只有5岁的预备班，也开设了3岁和4岁的幼儿园。时间长度 方面以前跟公立幼儿园差不多，但是渐渐他们也有了灵活性，3岁都可以上5天的 班，时间长自然费用就多。一天里的时间长度也可以跟小学生一样。很多家长就 读私校的幼儿园主要是为了占位。因为大部分私校会保证这些孩子在预备班有位 子。但注意私校的幼儿园没有育儿退税（Child Care Rebate）,就是政府退税50%那 一部分，只有根据家庭收入补得比较少的儿童保育津贴（Child Care Benefits）。

澳大利亚各个洲之间有很多不同，甚至连幼儿园学前班的分类与叫法都不一 样。有的父母上网查墨尔本的幼儿园，越看越迷糊。今天就来科普下维多利亚州 幼儿园的常识。 幼儿园/学前教育和预备班 首先，维州的小孩子6岁上小学一年级 (primary)，5岁上预备班 (prep),一般小 学学校包含预备班，换句话说，预备班就是在小学校园里。公立学校鼓励几张在 孩子大概4岁的时候可以参观学校，紧接着报名。5岁的预备班读完就直接上同一 个学校的一年级。 其次是幼儿园 (Kindergarten)，在维州幼儿园也叫学前教育（pre-school），两 个词是一个意思。这就是跟新州最大的不同。也就是3岁和4岁的教育。墨尔本对 于3岁和4岁的幼儿园/学前教育（下面都只叫幼儿园）有单独的机构，4岁政府有 补助，所以时间比较长，一周大概有15个小时，每间幼儿园提供的天数不同，一 周有2天，3天或4天，但加起来都是一周15个小时。费用每个幼儿园不一样，但一 般是一年1000到2000刀之间，这个费用已经是补贴之后的数额。 3岁的没有政府补助，缴费跟4岁差不多，但是时间长度明显短很多，一周 5到7个小时都有。一般是一周1到2天。 这些幼儿园的特点就是不包吃喝，学期制，即学校放假他们也放假。有健康 卡的家长4岁孩子幼儿园学费还可以减少或减免。 全职家长的选择——托儿所 另外一些家长因为工作关系，会考虑托儿所（Childcare），现在很多托儿所也 有幼儿园教育项目，好处是时间比较长，跟托儿所开放时间一致，一般早六点到 晚六点，大多数包吃包喝，也没有学校假期，一整年都可以去。价钱跟每个托儿 所的收费一致，会比年幼的宝宝便宜些，但一天全费也要100刀左右，根据每个人 收入情况不一样，政府会补助一些。依据大多数人的收入情况下，一天大概自己 要付50刀，上5天的话一年自费大概要1万刀左右。

作者简介：林诗雨 （Victor Lin）是2013年墨尔本语法学校高考满分的学生，现在墨尔本大学学习生物医学。他 前六科的成绩（裸分满分50）分别是：高等数学54.2，中文第二语言52.7，拉丁语52.6，数学方法50，墨尔本 大学数学预科满分。我们有幸邀请到他给我们分享他的学习经验。敬请关注。这一期诗雨给我们讲诉了他如何 学习中文第二语言的过程和感想。身在澳洲的我们多少都会对中文有一种情怀，况且高考中文又是加分的科 目，何乐而不学。可是在这边长大的孩子未必这么想。如何让孩子学习中文大概是每个父母的难题。有的父母 选择放弃，有的父母却坚持着。希望诗雨的文章能给大家一点动力，一丝启发。
我是在澳洲出生的华裔后代，三岁时被父母送到周末中文学校学中文。从学前班学中 国儿歌开始，然后学拼音、学认字、学写文章，到VCE 中文考试，我走过了13年的路程。 这13年来，无论经历多少波折，我都从未间断过。其中有兴趣与艰难的碰撞，有失败和成 功的交织，也有辛苦及欢乐的相伴。 刚上中文学校时，我并不抗拒。在学前班，与小朋友唱唱儿歌，跟老师学学拼音，并 不感到过分吃力。加上当时年纪小，有妈妈整天在学校陪着，更是没有抱怨的理由。但随 着年龄的增长，妈妈开始不陪了。学校的内容也渐渐增多，难度也慢慢加大。因此，我开 始产生抵触情绪。为什么其他小朋友周末都可以睡懒觉、打游戏，而我却要一早起床上中 文学校，整天呆在教室里学那些枯燥乏味，晦涩难懂的中文呢？真是太不公平了！ 记得有一次，同学约我周末去大球，而我却因中文学校无法应约。我当时感到十分委 屈，甚至考虑过放弃学中文。妈妈看到我消极的样子，给我讲了个故事：“从前有一只老 鹰生了五只小鹰。每次老鹰捕猎回来的食物只能喂一只小鹰。鹰的喂食方法并不依照平等 分配，而是谁抢得凶谁得食。因此，不断向上扑腾抢食的小鹰生存了下来，懒惰的却饿死 了。”听完妈妈的故事后，我豁然开朗。知识是人的精神粮食，虽然不像老鹰的食物仅够 一人享用，但也要靠自己向上扑腾才能取得！多学一种语言就多学一种语言就等于多学一 门技能，为何把周末浪费在睡觉玩耍上呢？就这样，我坚持了下来。 学中文就好比长途跋涉。除了十几年如一日的坚持，还要一步一脚印地学习发音，学 习从上至下，从左至右的笔画书写，有足够的耐心和毅力反复熟记成百上千的方块字。有 了一定的词汇量后，还要学习四字成语，大量阅读各种中文书籍。这十几年来，为了能让 自己的中文水平更上一层楼，我参加过无数的中文竞赛，如中国汉语水平考试、海外华裔 青少年中华文化知识竞赛、鲁迅青少年文学奖等。只要有机会锻炼，我都不会放过。这些 比赛让我认识到了中国源远流长的历史和博大精深的文化，使我对这一套神乎其神却与我 息息相关的语言产生了浓厚的兴趣。 光阴似箭，日月如梭。转眼间我已成了大二的学生。回顾这十几年学中文的经历，我 百感丛生。书山有路勤为径，学海无涯苦作舟。学中文的道路虽然蜿蜒曲折，坎坷不平， 但只要有坚持不懈，持之以恒的精神，当你走到筋疲力尽时，成功就会在前面迎接着你。 诗雨关于中文第二语言考试的书 VCE Chinese: Exam Revision Book已经印刷完版，对于想考中文第二语言的孩子非 常有帮助，有兴趣购买的人请联系诗雨：victorlin1995@hotmail.com
