This month I would like to share a beautiful poem of winter with you, written by Claude McKay. Some day, when trees have shed their leaves And against the morning's white The shivering birds beneath the eaves Have sheltered for the night, We'll turn our faces southward, love, Toward the summer isle Where bamboos spire to shafted grove And wide-mouthed orchids smile. And we will seek the quiet hill Where towers the cotton tree, And leaps the laughing crystal rill, And works the droning bee. And we will build a cottage there Beside an open glade, With black-ribbed blue-bells blowing near, And ferns that never fade.

One hundred years ago, Dr Maria Montessori, an inspira onal educator, developed a unique method of educa on, based on research into childhood learning. The Montessori approach fosters children's love of learning and encourages independence by providing an environment of ac vi es and materials which children use at their own pace. This builds self-confidence, inner discipline, a sense of self-worth and ins lls posi ve social behaviour. The approach forms the basis for lifelong learning. In today's world it is more important than ever that children become mo vated individuals able to develop to their full poten al. Montessori takes into account the whole child and his place in the community, hence its relevance for today and the future. Montessori 3-6 year old Program Children between the age of birth and six possess an "absorbent mind". This almost genius capacity for mental absorp on enables them to learn their na ve tongue, to perfect movement and internalize order. Maria Montessori observed that children also experience Sensi ve Periods in their development. These are periods of special sensi vity when the child is a racted to certain s muli in his or her environment allowing them to acquire certain knowledge and skills. These periods occur universally for all children at approximately the same age and provide the me for op mal development of that par cular skill or knowledge. The 3 to 6 year old child is undergoing a process of self-construc on. The applica on of the Montessori philosophy and the specifically designed Montessori equipment aids the child's ability to absorb knowledge and con nue this path of self-construc on. There are four main areas in the pre-school program: Prac cal Life, Sensorial, Language and Mathema cs. Considerable emphasis is also placed on Crea ve Arts, Music, Science, Geography and Cultural Studies. Acquisi on of one's own first culture is the child's central developmental drive in the first plane of development. The pre-primary environment serves this drive abundantly, bringing the world to the child. Globes, maps, songs, land forms, collec ons of pictures of life in different cultures, and much more, is offered, with the aim of helping the child to grow as an individual apprecia ng the larger context of his or her world. “I can do it myself”
