Is the Best School enough? David Cordover
We live in an area where we are lucky enough to be surrounded by excellent schools. State schools, independent schools and Catholic schools in this area are virtually all above the state and na onal averages in every measurable area. So, is going to the Best School enough for your child? Educa on has and will con nue to change the world, I value li le over a good educa on. Schools have an important place in our society and certainly contribute to educa on, but allowing schools to be the only provider of educa on to your child is more harmful than beneficial. Firstly, children need to understand that they are ALWAYS learning. If they believe that learning stops when the bell goes at 3.30pm they are going to be closed to opportuni es for the rest of their lives. They should LOVE learning and should learn as o en as they breathe. Give your kids opportuni es to learn in the car, on the weekend, at bed me, in the bath... encourage curiosity and wonder and when you don't know something take the me to look it up! Your kids will quickly understand that learning is a lifestyle rather than just a means to pass a test. Because schools group children by age you will find a class group has mixed abili es in various fields; sport, music, maths, language, social etc... usually extra-curricular ac vi es are grouped by ability rather than age, which allows kids get to really engage with other individuals who think the same way, regardless of age! Imagine if you were only allowed to be friends with people born in the same year as you! Extra-curricular ac vi es also give the CHILD an opportunity to be involved in choosing how and what they learn. Instead of a Top Down approach your kids will have some input into their educa on. So my view. School, even the Best School, is not enough to grow an enthusias c, happy, educated and successful adult. Taking part in extra-curricular ac vi es provides: - Interac on with like-minded peers - Extends kids beyond their age - Challenges - Confidence and self-esteem - New experiences - Skills for life

澳洲的孩子让我觉得，输赢似乎并不是最重要的。当然每一个人都应 该有向上的积极精神，可是只要我们付出了努力，过程就比结果更重要。 这种心灵鸡汤，国内一直在提倡，可惜只存在于《读者》之类的书中，现 实中却很难实现。没想到在澳洲的学校却再普通不过。而且，输，并不可 怕。输了，并不能抹去你飞过的痕迹；输了，可是你比上次进步了，你就 是赢家；我输了，可是我的朋友赢了，我也会由衷为他感到高兴。这种心 态，不才是正常的心态吗？ 闲聊中跟朋友说起为什么可以一眼就看出谁是ABC，朋友们觉得是因为 ABC除了衣服妆容有自己的特色外，他们的脸上是一种“烦恼很少”的简 单——他可能是他们学校高考的状元，精通几门语言，在最好的大学读最 难的科目，可是他的脸上有种积极的健康的“简单和无忧”。那种简单， 让人一眼就看出了这是在国外生长的孩子。 庆幸，孩子们能成长在这样的一个环境里，也希望我们自己不要给他 们太多输赢的压力。毕竟那种被“比较”的痛苦，“永远做得不够好”的 失望，我们经历过了，就不应该让它再折磨我们的下一代了。

争 第 一 笔者在澳洲的中学教书，时而会发现中西教育的一些细微不同，但感 触比较大的，应该是中澳孩子对待“争第一”的态度。 澳洲学校个人的成绩不会公开排名，但以组为单位的比赛则会宣布名 次，比如运动会，唱歌比赛，游泳比赛。每个学生会被分到一个“家” 里，一般以不同的颜色来区分不同的“家”，一个学校总共会有五六个 “家”。到了比赛的当天，不同的“家”的学生会各显神通，有的穿上自 己“家”颜色的衣服，有的在脸上画上自己“家”的颜色，可见他们对 “家”的归属感非常强。比赛一般是以各个“家”里的学生的分数累积来 排名。最后宣布的时候会从最后一名宣布，一直到第一名。 一开始我以为，最后一名的孩子们应该会很丧气，至少应该是沉默来 表现他们的失望。但出乎我意料，每次宣布最后一名的时候，那个“家” 的孩子们反而爆发雷鸣般的“耶”，然后鼓掌，互相拥抱——好像他们赢 了。那种开心不是假装，而是由衷地释放自己的喜悦。依次地，每个名次 都会换来欢呼，甚至有时候第二名的欢呼声还要比第一名高。问其原因， 原来是第二名去年是最后一名，今年能取得这样的进步是比第一名还要不 容易。不同“家”的孩子们也会互相祝贺，大家都是赢家。 这样的场景，让从小在国内受“力争第一”的我惊讶不已。无论是老 师，父母还是同龄人，从小到大，我们听到的话大多是“才考了第二名？ 下次争取考第一！”，又或者是这样的故事“大家都说小鸭比猴子有本 事，猴子听了之后很不服气”。那时候真累啊，因为第一名只有一个人， 每一次考试不甘心的，被父母数落的孩子才是大多数。为了争第一名，我 们使出浑身解数，就是为了把别人挤下桥，还要跟朋友暗暗较劲，相互比 较，甚至有的孩子输不起，选择了极端的方式结束人生的“比赛”。 To advertise in Your Child in Monash call 0425 301 986
