Art School of the Month NEW STAR ART ART IS THE GOLDEN KEY TO BUILDING CHILDREN’S FUTURE By Yaping Jiang Children are born artists, and their ability to draw and paint often grows together with their intelligence. However it is like a seed in the soil that without adequate water and fertilizer will not grow or blossom well. Most of the parents today may not expect their children to become artists, but the cultivation of creativity and a sense of visual communication is vital for their future. An art teacher is playing important role for children’s artistic development. A child is just like a garden plot, where the kind of seeds that are sown determines the kind of fruit that will be yielded. The teacher’s quality will be directly reflected in child’s future development. We believe there are no children who are unable to learn well, there are only teachers who are unable to teach well. Based on over 20 years teaching experience with New Star Art, I would like to make the following suggestions to 1. Encouragement In all circumstances you should show interest in your children’s works and praise them. Your attitude will directly influence your children’s interest. It can be useful to display some of their works, which will serve both as encouragement and progress. Also encourage your children to “show off” their works at school or to of family and friends. This is all confidence boosting. 2. No judgment Please don’t criticize your child’s work, because we can’t judge children’s works from our adult perspective. Young children’s work is uninhibited and full of imagination. It is important that every child is left to display their individual personalities through their work, as this is the essence of creative art. 3. Training Professional training is necessary for all ages. A quality training program will open your children’s mind widely, develop their artistic skills rapidly, and expand their imaginative potential. Subsequently selecting a good teacher and program is very important. Overall, learning to draw and paint is a training process that incorporates the use of eyes, hands and mind. Eyes capable of capturing beauty that others are unable to see, hands capable of visual communication, analytical mental power that enables the ability to refine work. Therefor the choice of art training is critical to your child’s overall development. Art is a golden key to building your child’s future.

Care Where Building commences on the new Monash Children’s Hospital

On 15 July 2014, Monash Health celebrated the turning of the first sod, marking the beginning of construction for the new 230bed Monash Children’s Hospital that is located next to the Monash Medical Centre in Clayton and due to open in early 2017. The new Monash Children’s Hospital will ensure more Victorian children and their families can benefit from world-class specialist paediatric services and will include: 96 acute paediatric inpatient beds, 10 paediatric intensive care unit beds, 64 neonatal care beds, 20 same day oncology

beds and many more services. At the recent sod-turn event in July the Premier of Victoria Dr Denis Napthine, said the new state-of-the-art facility will allow Monash Health to provide expanded services in a child and family centred environment, delivering an extra 60,000 outpatient treatments each year and providing purpose-built day facilities for children. Hedi Millier, mother of one year old Sonny who was born premature with severe heart and lung problems, also spoke to guests about the importance of a new hospital and how grateful her family is for the care Sonny received. “I used to look at families that were going

It’s Needed through things like this and think ‘how do they do it?’ Those people that spend most of their lives in hospital. Then, 15 months ago we became one of those families,” Hedi said.

“We really value the input and feedback of our consumer advisory panel at all levels because ultimately, it assists in ensuring that our decisions lead to improved outcomes and quality of care for our young patients,” said Kym Forrest, Director Monash Children’s Hospital Project. Gill, a panel member, had her five-month old grandson treated at Monash Children’s Hospital in 2012.

Hedi Millier with Sonny at the sod turn event in July 2014.

“Right from the start, we felt welcomed and I feel free to express my point of view as a mother and always feel we are being listened to,” said Gill.

Today Sonny and his family are fighting the odds and refusing to give in. Sonny spends his days attached to an oxygen tank, requires 24 hour care and has continued to be treated at Monash Children’s Hospital. “As a parent I don’t think you can imagine anything worse than having a sick child. If only we could trade places with them. Words cannot explain how much we appreciate, respect and are forever grateful to the Monash Children’s Hospital,” Hedi said.

A Community Focus Monash Health is engaging the local community in planning for the new hospital. A consumer advisory panel has been established that includes current and past patients, parents and families meeting with Monash Health planning teams each month.

O v e r t h e l a s t 2 0 ye a rs G.A.T.E.WAYS has gained considerable recognition with teachers, parents and children in Australia for its high quality programs. Parent paid fees cover the costs of program development, administration and presentation. G.A.T.E.WAYS is widely supported by public schools. In any given week during the school term between 750 and 1200 primary aged children attend workshops. G.A.T.E.WAYS engages presenters who are

expert in a given field or fields; passionate about their field and able to convey this enthusiasm to children; excellent communicators who love children; knowledgeable about the special needs of gifted children and how they learn; creative, flexible and skilled in terms of curriculum development and delivery. Their programs are inquiry based, with hands-on activities, problem solving and higher order thinking skills. If you would like more information about G. A .T.E.WAYS, check out the website www.gateways.edu.au G.A.T.E.WAYS recently delivered a great program at Knox Gardens P.S over a week workshop period in Term 3.
