Editors Notice Board

Dear Readers, Thank you for such a warm and friendly welcome to the first edition of ‘Your Child in Monash’ magazine. By the time we were into the third week of August, ‘Your Child in Monash’ magazines practically ran out at majority of our distribution points. So thanks once again for showing your interest and taking this magazine into your homes. We are into the month of September – when the days are getting longer and brighter and you can almost smell spring in the air. It is also the month to celebrate the V. IMP person in our lives – FATHER!!! Read our articles ‘Importance of Fathers’, ‘Cooking for Dad’ and a special poem ‘My Father’; and our Kids Corner Special - featuring ‘Father’s Day Maze’. On another note, September school holidays are soon approaching and I am well prepared to keep my two little pranksters truly busy and out of mischief. How about you…? Here are some lovely tips to engage your tiny tots. You may want to plan some family time together (Article Family Time pg 10) or involve them into some garden activity (Article Greening your view pg 12) or plan a visit to your nearest local library for some fun-filled activities (Monash Library School Holiday activities pg 24). Whatever you choose to do, make sure you enjoy your time, eat healthy, be active and alert, play safe and spoil your Dads this Father’s Day. Last but not the least please remember to shop local, support local business and mention ‘Your Child in Monash’. Until next time, Vanmala, Editor.

The Importance of Fathers

T

here is no doubt that mothers play an allimportant leading role in the lives of their children. They are the obvious heroes of child rearing. But what about a father's role? Just how important are the dads of the world compared to the almighty image of mother? My belief is that fathers play just as important a role as mothers. Different, yes. Possibly not as nurturing, not as all-sacrificing but just as important in the developmental and emotional well being of a child. Dads are the solid foundation of our lives. They are the shore we swim to when our arms and legs feel increasingly tired. They are the strength we rely on as we take our first tentative steps into the world. Dads can be tender, tough, fragile or powerful but they are probably the most uncomplicated love we will ever know.

by Rexanne Mancini For mothers, the father of our children is the one person we can trust to watch over our babies as closely as we would. We are secure in the knowledge of their love for our precious offspring. Dad is the only other person in the world as fascinated with every nuance and murmur of our babies. He is the one person on the planet with whom we can indulge our need to brag and carry on about our kid's accomplishments and heartaches ad nauseam ... one who will be just as interested and never yawn in the face of our devotion. Without dads, we wouldn't be mums. I would like to take the liberty of thanking them from all our hearts for this honour and for being our partners in this business of raising children. Know how much you are loved and revered, guys! You are our trusted soldiers and we need you more than you will ever realise.

For daughters, Daddy is the first man they adore ... the first man whose eyes shine with overwhelming amazement when they look at us. He is the first man to fall in love with us. For sons, Daddy is the idol they first aspire to emulate ... their mirror image of what will be and possibly the only man they will ever feel comfortable loving. Daddy is the first man who held us, as a loving parent, with a lump in his throat so huge, only the joy of that love could erase the overwhelming pain of choking on unexpected raw emotion. I think when a father holds his newborn baby, he is touched by pure vulnerability for the first time in his adult life, leaving him forever humbled by the unexplained miracles of life.

Cook for Dad C

hildren making Dad breakfast in bed on Father's Day is traditional.Yes, it can be messy and Dad might have to put up with burnt toast or soggy cereal, but the love and thought shown by the children is priceless. Even the youngest of children enjoy spoiling Dad one day a year. Below are some simple recipes for young children to follow (with help as appropriate,) so that they can show Dad they care!

Toast and Jam

Fruit Salad A bowl of fresh fruit salad is a healthy start to any Dad's day. Even toddlers can manage to cut a banana into pieces and mix it with grapes. Older children and Mum can add apples, oranges, strawberries, pears and peaches as well. If necessary, a tin of fruit salad can form the base of the salad. Serve with yoghurt, cream or ice cream, depending on Dad's tastes. NB: to take some of the sourness out of yoghurt to complement the fruit, mix a little caster sugar in it before serving.

Fruit Platter

It sounds simple, but it is an achievement for a toddler or pre-schooler. Mum will need to deal with the cooking, but kids can set out the jam and knife, and maybe pour the juice. If Dad likes them, swap toast for crumpets, muffins or croissant.

Cereal Pour Dad's favourite muesli or cereal into his bowl and serve it with a jug of milk and a glass of juice on a tray. This looks fancier than everyday breakfasts (and saves Dad getting soggy cereal across the carpet and in his mouth!)

8

A platter of fruit and maybe cheeses will give a bit of luxury to the day. Let the children arrange the fruit, almond bread, muffins, croissant, nuts, cheeses or whatever else you think she'll like. Serve it on a nice platter he can eat off and it is a simple but exotic breakfast anyone can make for Dad.

Eggs and toast Not so suitable for the very young, but boiling, poaching or frying some eggs for Dad can be fun and fills Dad up nicely as brunch if he's had a good sleep in. Cook the eggs how Dad likes them and provide with toast and maybe some fried tomato and mushrooms as well. For extra flavour in the poached eggs, add some flavoured vinegar to the water before cooking

Egg Sandwiches If Mum cooks boiled eggs the day before, even young children can make Dad an egg sandwich for breakfast. Mash up the egg and add in curry powder, cheese or other flavourings that Dad likes. Spread between pieces of bread, and voila! A nice touch would be to warm the sandwich, too. Alternatively, add a raw egg to bread in a jaffle iron or sandwich toaster. Cheese and flavourings can also be added.

Scrambled Eggs Primary children will find this a challenging but feasible dish to prepare. The basics are to beat eggs and milk in a bowl. Melt some butter in a pan then add the egg mixture. Stir as the egg thickens and serve just as the last bits of egg thicken. For variation and to treat Dad, mix some grated cheese in with the eggs and milk; sauté (lightly fry) some onion or bacon in the pan before adding the eggs; or add parsley or Dad's favourite herbs and spices; serve on toast and sliced tomato.

French Toast Beat eggs and milk in a bowl, adding cinnamon to taste. One at a time, dip slices of bread into the mix. Cook in a fry pan with a small amount of butter. Serve with cheese and a sprig of parsley or topped with ice cream and fruit. My “Hero” always so strong willed, determined & tough from the outside... Ironically, a soft, nurturing, caring & a gentle father inside… Oh!! All the sleepless nights you spent at my bedside I remember… When I was sick your tears were so pure & tender… Holding your strong hand with my tiny little fingers… I walked my first baby steps & the memories still lingers… When I was a toddler my world was only you… Now I’m as tall as you but my world has slowly diverted from you… Just like the bird who leaves its nest & learns to fly up in the sky... Your child has learnt to walk pass over this world so high... You have always been around like a protective shield… Cushioning me against all odds & upheavals like a battlefield... I wish I would never have grown up in age… Come & embrace me My Father My Sage… Today you have grey hair, tired eyes behind those glasses but are old never… You’re My Hero, My Idol & Young Forever & Ever & Ever…

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!!! Ekta Talati, mother of a toddler, she does freelance writing through poems, articles & blogs.
