I’m wife to Sean, Mum to gorgeous 22 month old Harry and a Journalist by trade. YCIS is all about family life and we share this in eleven issues per year with 5000 copies hitting the streets each month. Each issue we talk parenting, health & wellbeing and cover community news - all with a local focus! Not only is it a great read, but it’s a cost-effective platform for local businesses to reach Stonnington families with ads starting from as little as $45 per month*. As a mummy journo, I love to write about all things parenting, so if there is a topic you’d like covered, send me an email or FB message! To kick off this journey I’d like to share with you my deeply personal journey with Post Natal Depression following the birth of my beautiful son Harry (Pg15). Gosh it was such a hard time in my life, but with support I got through it and it’s become a passion of mine to ensure other women don’t feel ashamed or alone in this. Let’s keep the conversation going! This month we feature Jess Dempsey in our very first ‘5 Minutes With...’ segment (Pg8). It’s all about uncovering the person behind the “Mum” or “Dad” tag. Jess is the stylish brains behind What Would Karl Do? - one of Australia’s most-read fashion blogs. If you know a local mama/dada who is inspiring, let me know! Make sure you check out Love Your Local on pg14 which features Glenferrie Road, Malvern. Babies, Children & Chiropractic Care..

M

any people ask, "why should a child see a Chiropractor?" The simple answer is, because of life! From the birth process, to learning to sit, crawl, walk and run, infants experience a multitude of traumas, bumps, falls and ‘minor’ injuries. The human body can only take so much and will continue to compensate and adapt, until it can no longer… And then symptoms appear. The human body is an incredible machine that is able to adapt to its environment and compensate for comfort and function. This is where a Chiropractor comes into the picture as they look at 'minor' slightly different to other health practitioners. In saying that, Chiropractors' examine and look beyond the surface or the symptoms. Chiropractors' locate and correct spinal dysfunctions (commonly referred to as subluxations). From a Chiropractic perspective, subluxations are functional misalignments of the spine, pelvis or cranial/ skull joints that if not corrected may cause the nervous system (our body’s master controller) to not function at 100%. As for our beautiful babies, the birth process can cause great stress to their nervous system, spine and cranial system. Birth interventions such as manual force (used in a c-section and assisted vaginal deliveries), back birthing, forceps and vacuum suction can and do cause trauma to the musculoskeletal system. If left uncorrected, it is common for Chiropractors’ to see unsettled babies with complaints such as; neck pain, colic & unexplained crying (<12 weeks of age only), wind, sleep trouble, abnormal neck movement (dislike of 'tummy 6

by Dr Orly Zuker time', an important developmental exercise), breastfeeding difficulty (side preference) and digestive complaints. These are good indicators for considering a Chiropractic check-up.

Colic, Crying and Disturbed Sleep Chiropractors frequently find that infantile colic can be associated with spinal and nervous system dysfunction (specifically of the upper neck). Babies respond quickly, and the good news is that Chiropractic is known for its fast results with complaints such as colic, and with a focus on prevention, gentle care and natural a p p r o a c h, Chiropractic care might just be the answer to your baby’s troubles. To correct spinal dysfunction (subluxation) there are a variety of adjusting techniques, a natural approach that Chiropractors use. Treatment is always gentle, safe and customized to each individual’s unique size, age and spinal issues. For more information on your local family Chiropractor please contact The Chiropractic Association of Australia (CAA). Toll free number is: 1800 075 003. Dr Orly Zuker is a breastfeeding mother, Melbourne based family Chiropractor and Division 1 Nurse. She specialises in women's health, pregnancy care, and paediatric care. She has an interest and passion in wellness care for families, including gentle chiropractic care, nutrition and lifestyle guidance. Dr Orly Zuker is certified in Webster technique, to help through pregnancy.

5 Minutes With...

Mum, wife & the brains behind fashion website What Would Karl Do?

Q. So Jess, congrats on becoming a mum again! You have two gorgeous little boys and yet still manage to be one of the most in demand fashion bloggers. Tell me your secret to juggling it all? Thank you, it's wonderful to have two little ones! It definitely is a juggling act that's for sure! From the moment Will, my little four month old was born, I had all hands on deck from the family. My sisters in law would help out keeping Aston (2.5) occupied, my mother in law would help out by making us dinner, cleaning up and mind Will while I shower and my husband and I would share the load when he would get home from work and the family have all gone home. I blog at night and if I have to attend an event I make it work around my kids routines or I try and take them along with me. I am very blessed with a very good baby, he has made it very easy for me too. I am also starting a mummy blog in the next month, so my nights will become longer, but I really feel I want to share my mummy stories on a different platform to the fashion blog so stay tuned! Q. When you're having one of 'those days' and parenting on empty, what's your advice for staying zen? Some days it can get really hard, especially if your toddler is demanding attention and is pushing the boundaries to get that attention and then the baby isn't sleeping, the house is a mess and you need to start to think about dinner. On those days I just have to stop for a second, pick up the baby, give the toddler the attention and when he calms down and I ask for a kiss and a cuddle it makes everything better. All I have to do is see my baby smile, get a big cuddle from Aston and it puts things into perspective. Oh and tell the husband to pick up a block of chocolate on the way home! Q. What has been your biggest challenge since entering motherhood? To be 100% honest, anxiety and worry. It is something I never had before I was pregnant. I remember when I was pregnant with Aston and I would worry about his health, about what I was eating or doing incase it hurt him and I thought to myself, I can't wait until my baby is born so I can stop worrying. Ha! Little did I know that worry and anxiety continues for as long as you are a mum. I worry about him getting lost, I worry about him choking on food and falling over and I went through it all again with pregnancy number two. I know I am not alone on this, but it is a challenge for me to pull back a bit and trust they will be fine. Q. It's a sunny Spring day, what are your go-to places around Stonnington to take the boys? Number one place is the Cubby House Canteen on Union Street, Armadale. Aston loves it there, they have a great kids menu, the best baby chino's and he can play play doh or colour in on the menu whilst I sip my latte and eat a healthy salad made by the girls who own it. Then we hit the 'big park' or 'little park' depending on how he is feeling. 8

SPRING INTO SPRING WITH YOUR BUB One of the big problems for new mums is to find cardio exercise routines which they can do that allow or even welcome babies. Sure, there are lots of non cardio exercise options where mums can bring along their new bubs – mainly yoga and pilates - which are excellent for stretching and muscle conditioning, toning and core strengthening. Running with an all terrain pram sounds all well and good but a new mum's hip joints are still recovering and doctors recommend they do exercise that is lower impact. Walking is great but it doesn't exactly get the blood pumping. Pam Meyerowitz, owner of the SpinStar spin studio in Prahran, says that spin is an ideal high cardio low impact exercise. And she provides headphone jacks for each bike meaning you can adjust your own music volume and the studio is almost silent and doesn't disturb the bubs which can sit in their capsules in front of their mums' bikes. “The man's verdict was that he stayed in his zone and was not distracted at all, even though one of the bubs wanted mum's attention during the class.” SpinStar now has two classes on offer weekly at 9:45am Tuesdays and Fridays that are baby friendly. Bubs are not compulsory for these classes, just headphones, towels and water bottles and big smiles. They come with the added bonus of burning between 400-800 calories in just 45 minutes. And a free endorphin boost!

In My Shadow – O

verwhelmed. Anxious. Exhausted. Guilt. Shame. These were the five words that consumed me during the first ten weeks of my son Harry's life. Definitely not how I imagined life as a new mum would be. During my pregnancy, I was aware of post natal depression, I'd heard them talk about it in our ante-natal classes, yet I was convinced it wasn't something I'd have to worry about. In my mind, Harry's birth didn't go to plan. I had wanted to try for a natural, drug free birth (HA!), but hours into my labour things started to go very wrong. Long story short, I had 'failed to progress.' I was rushed in for an emergency CSection at three am and a short while later, Harry Robert was born and he was just perfect. I remember being totally overwhelmed with so many emotions when he was first put on my chest, his beautiful big brown eyes blinking back at me. Then in an instant, he was whisked away while I stayed in recovery. Fast-forward to day 3, and things really started to fall apart. By that point I was in pain from breastfeeding, (the post-c section CANKLES had arrived) & Harry just wasn't latching on right. As a result, my nipples were cracked and bleeding and I began to fear every feed. I couldn't understand how something so natural could be so hard for some women. I felt like such a failure. I persisted with the pain and anxiety for 10 weeks before I realised something wasn't quite right. I don't think I had actually stopped crying since I left hospital! The tears would come spontaneously and without warning, I would cry at the drop of a hat, even sometimes wake up 16

crying. Then the anxiety would start. Panic attacks, heart palpitations, complete meltdowns. Each day I would wake up and tell myself I was fine, but in reality, I was a mess. I remember staring at my little boy who I knew was so beautiful and perfect and thinking it could be anyone's child. I didn't have that fierce connection I imagined I would with my baby. I knew I loved him, yet so much of the journey to this point was, in my mind, filled with fear and pain. After a mini-meltdown to my wonderful husband early one morning, I went and spoke to my maternal child health nurse and later that day to my GP and explained all of the emotions and feelings I had been bottling up inside. Three days later I was admitted to a Mother Baby Unit and that's where the magic began. I was prescribed medication, had access to counselling and had the opportunity to meet and talk with other mums just like me, who were battling the exact same emotions. I no longer felt alone or like an outcast and was most of all blown away by how common PND really is. One in five pregnant women will suffer from PND It took me some months to get to the point where I could honestly say that I was feeling wonderfully happy again, full of love and adoration for my beautiful family and confident about the future. Of all the things I've learnt out of this amazing journey into parenthood is that every baby and childbirth experience is different and you have to do what's right for YOU. You can read every

a journey through PND by Pip Mooney parenting book (trust me I did!!) and try to follow all the routines, but in the end, you've got to do what's right for you and your baby. And most of all, if you don't feel right, SPEAK UP. Please don't suffer in silence. Know that you're not alone and know that once you reach out for help, things will start to change for the better, and rapidly. Lets keep the conversation going, depression is real and extremely common, yet EXTREMELY treatable. Help is just around the corner; all you have to do is ask! EDITORIAL One of the best things about raising children in Prahran is the ease of access to everything. Being just a short walk away from local parks, the swimming pool, music classes, sporting clubs, and even circus lessons at Australia's only accredited circus school, kids grow up in this area with a wealth of choice that makes their childhood really very special. Education in Prahran for younger kids is well serviced with early childhood centres and three fantastic primary schools. It's not often schools are located just off leafy, big parks and close to the heart of our shopping villages. It is a luxury that our young kids can be so active being just a hop, skip and a jump away from everything. While there is an abundance of leading private secondary schools available in the area, it has been apparent over the years as your local Member that a State secondary school would be welcomed by families. I am so proud that the Victorian Coalition Government has committed $20 million to build a new State secondary school in Prahran. Following the announcement about this commitment for a new State secondary school, I have led the Prahran Secondary Education Taskforce which is responsible for overseeing this project. Our first task has been working to quickly identify a suitable location for the school. It is expected that the site will be decided by October this year, and hopefully the first intake of Year 7s will be ready to be enrolled for their first day of school by 2016. The success of our new school in Prahran will depend greatly on the involvement of the families who enrol their kids and the sense of community and belonging that will stem from that. This is such an exciting new chapter for young families in Prahran and I am so pleased that if re-elected the Napthine Government will deliver this State secondary school for our kids. (Unfortunately the Labor opposition will not deliver this school if elected.) If you would to receive regular updates on the progress of the State secondary school please contact me directly at clem.newton-brown@parliament.vic.gov.au or call my office at 9981 9501. As your local Member for Prahran I am committed to building a better community.

Bacteria – Friend or Foe? by Erin Quint

B

acteria is everywhere, on our skin, on our food, in our gut. Our bodies house millions of bacterial villages. For the most part, they are peaceful villages, maintaining order to the system they reside. But when antibacterial and antimicrobial products disrupt these communities, so are those systems and our health. There are three issues antibacterial and antimicrobial products present. First, these products typically kill both good and bad bacteria, which means fewer residents to respond to an attack.

u u u u

u u

u

Second, the few good bacteria that do manage to survive rarely have an opportunity to respond to invaders, and like all of us, they need practice to get good at what they do. So when a baddie does manage to get through, the response is not quick enough or effective and we get sick. Third, out of boredom in the absence of conflict, our immune system might just start messing with other healthy cells in our body resulting in autoimmune conditions such as allergies, asthma, hay fever, eczema, multiple sclerosis, and coeliac.

Eat more fibre, good gut bacteria love fibre. Avoid junk food, bad bacteria love sugar. Take probiotics when prescribed antibiotics to keep the gut bacteria population up. No need to disinfect your nipple with antibacterial wipes before breastfeeding, there’s good stuff on there your baby will benefit from. Use natural, plant-based hand soap. It will get rid of the bad stuff and leave the good. Use natural alternatives when cleaning, vinegar, lemon juice, borax, baking soda, tea tree oil and eucalyptus. Wash your hands (with just plain soap) when you think they may be harbouring bad bacteria e.g. after the toilet, after public transport, after grocery shopping.

An imbalance or absence of probiotics, or good bacteria, has been linked to many health conditions such as acne, eczema, IBS, insomnia and depression. There are many strains, so it is important that the correct one is prescribed for each situation. If you would like more information about how probiotics can support you in health, contact a natural health practitioner.

So how do we ensure we maintain our good bacteria population, ready to launch an attack next time Mr. Bad Bacteria attempts to sneak his way in? Here are some suggestions: u

u u

Bring back the Mud Pie. Let kids play in the mud; it’s full of good bacteria. Washing them after will get rid of the bad. (use common sense here, mud near a sewage outlet may not be a good idea) Eat more raw organic fruits and vegetables including the skin. Wash with water only. Eat fermented foods. These are teeming with good bacteria. Try sauerkraut, kim chi, tempeh, natto, or kefir.

19. Nature. Stomp through leaves, collect lemons or other fruit or herbs from the garden, pick flowers in Spring, or find grass to feed to toy animals. 20. Obstacle course. Climb over large pillows and crawl under a tunnel of dining chairs (for younger children) or for older children, you can set up buckets to weave through, planks to balance on and boxes to crawl through. 21. Painting. Tie a paintbrush to a small bucket with a handle and you have the makings of “painting” with water. 22. Peek-a-boo. Fun to play with babies and toddlers especially. Hide behind different objects in different places and play it a lot. 23. Picnics. Set up a rug in the garden or the lounge room. Add a teaset, pretend or real food, some favourite soft toys. 24. Play dough. Cook your own; homemade cooked play dough keeps for a long time. Uncoloured play dough can be used for the under 2’s. 25. Puppets. Draw or glue on eyes, ears, mouth, nose and hair onto socks or even paper bags to create your own puppets. 26. Puzzles and jigsaws. Through playing with puzzles children are developing hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, shape recognition, problem solving and are learning about manipulating the world around them. 27. Sand. Build a sand castle for your toddler to knock down. As your child gets older they will enjoy play cooking and making tunnels and roads. 28. Science. Investigate natural objects using a magnifying glass, observe light through prisms to create rainbows, find objects to sink or float in water. 29. Sensory. Explore sensory materials such as sand, water, mud or play-dough with simple props such as plastic cups, bucket and spade in sand. 30. Seasons. Plant seeds or seedlings in a pot or the garden and your child can water them each day using a watering can, and watch them grow. 31. Singing. Sing to change the mood, it is a portable activity you can play at all ages. 32. Tree climbing. Learning to climb up and down is an important life skill and the joy of sitting amongst the leaves is a feeling of freedom to be treasured forever. 33. Walk. Spotting things in your neighbourhood is lots of fun. You’ll see cats, birds, dogs, butterflies, diggers, trains, buses, trams and people. 34. Water. Wash up plastic items in the sink, wash dolls using soap and a washer or animals like dinosaurs or farm animals using an old toothbrush. 35. Wildlife. Quick Breakfasts with Vegetables by Simone Emery Do you worry about your kids' Fruit and Veg intake? You aren't alone, 78% of children don't get their recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables. Sometimes, we leave the vegetable intake for the day behind and then end up relying solely on dinner time to get those pesky vegetables in. For your child, dinner may not be when they are most responsive or hungry. Is breakfast the one meal your kids always eat? Well, why not try fruit and vegies for breakfast (even on weekdays)? Here are my top 5 ideas for quick ways to get vegies and fruit eaten at breakfast while your kids are fresh and interested in eating. Breakfast is also a really important step in setting them up for a successful day.

Apple Wedges & Dip Slice up an apple and serve that with yoghurt for the children to dip the apple into. For some extra boost – add some bran, dried coconut and chopped fruit to the yoghurt. To make it more “fun” serve the yoghurt “dip” in egg cups. Mushroom Cups Take the stalk out of mushrooms and fill them with avocado or creamed corn. They don't need to be cooked. But if the kids prefer them cooked, try sprinkling on some multi-grain breadcrumbs and putting them under the grill for a couple of minutes (until the breadcrumbs are browned).

Vegie Spread on Toast Use left-over steamed sweet potato as a spread on wholegrain toast. This can also work for other left over baked/steamed vegies like carrot, parsnip, potato and zucchini. Breakfast Pizza

Mushroom Cups with Avocado

Quick Vegie Eggs

Thinly slice tomato. Place the slices along with fresh basil leaves onto English muffins. Top these with cheese and pop under the grill to melt and voila - breakfast pizza.

In a microwave safe ramekin, mix together one egg, a dash of milk and a small handful of vegies left-over from dinner last night. (For some extra flavour, try some sprigs of fresh herbs and some grated cheese.) Microwave on high for 1 minute and that's it! These recipes shouldn't take too long and some of them will save you money by using up some left-overs creatively. Be adventurous and break out of the breakfast rut with something new, healthy and time appropriate. Your kids won't thank you for it but they might enjoy eating it!
