PRE-SCHOOL OF THE MONTH TESTIMONIAL FROM A CURRENT PARENT ANNA CRAIG “I didn't plan for a Montessori education for my daughter, our awareness of the school just grew during the first three years of her life. But the time came for me to send her off into the world and Karuna Montessori was her Launchpad. We began in a 0-3 class once weekly, which was as much an introduction for me as it was for my daughter. I think I learned more in those first few months than she did. Practical life skills were honed; a sense of purpose and a method for living were set out for us in a way that seemed inherently natural and progressive. The Montessori way was providing an extension of respect and dignity for my little human being. Armed with the appropriate materials & opportunities to “let her help herself” she blossomed. As we graduated at 3 to preschool, where kids work together until 6, she really grew her wings and took flight. Karuna allowed her to experience a new social, personal and educational dynamic that will set her up for life. “

The Montessori environment blends natural learning of academic subjects with a growing understanding and experience of being part of a community that works together harmoniously. Children emerge from this nurturing school with confidence, selfworth, internal motivation, independence and respect for other people. They have been immersed in an environment which has nurtured their positive human qualities and potential at a time when their personality is being shaped for the future. Their selfesteem shines through. This is the most wonderful gift you can give to your child. Margaret Wayland -Director

'Designer Look'

by Elena Byrne

For Young Family Home Myth or True? Creating a beautiful interior, while maintaining its family-friendly characteristics does not necessarily mean investing a lot of work, effort and money. With a touch of creativity, imagination and consideration for each family member's needs, it is possible to create the space that is not only functional and comfortable, but also aesthetically pleasing and beautiful. There are several aspects to consider for families with small children who embark on creating a new look for their home. Safety for your young energetic family members is always a priority as well as storage, functionality and flexibility. Comfort needs to be the base point, and style will have to evolve naturally from what you feel comfortable with. Living room is undoubtedly the most used room of the house and is a great spot to start your revamping process. Unlike other rooms that have a clear purpose, living room needs to fulfill a variety of functions. Look at the space you have, and instead of trying to superimpose a style that does not sit well with the interior, consider the existing architecture of the room and work with it. The key piece of furniture that is necessary for the living room is the lounge piece. Consider investing in a well-made sofa that is covered with durable material that is easy to clean. Even with well behaved children, spills of food or drink are inevitable and your furniture is going to take a beating over time.

Take into consideration size of the room and avoid purchasing pieces that are 'overpowering'. Remember, it's the scale of the furniture that can make your room look larger. For example, don't put your lounge piece in the first obvious place. Think laterally and experiment with different layouts. Particular attention must be given to the lighting. It is amazing how good lighting can transform the look in your room from day time and night time. Use dimmers to create soft pools of light and add versatility to the lighting scheme. Accent lighting, highlighting the ornaments and any special features in the room, adds interest and creates ambience. Task lighting is used to illuminate any area that is used for a specific purpose. If the kids use the coffee table to play board games, add task lighting to that area. Think about entertaining in the living room and aim to create flexibility that will take your room from a play room to fine dining in one easy step! Pregnancy and Exercise Will exercise during pregnancy compromise the health of my baby and me? It’s no secret that pregnancy is not only a beautiful time in any woman’s life but also a daunting and scary time, with more changes to your body than ever before. With this in mind it begs the question: ‘will exercise during pregnancy compromise my or my baby’s h e a l t h ? ’ T h at q u e st i o n i s co m p l e te l y understandable and entirely justified given the lack of knowledge and literature that has historically been available. Only 50 years ago, pregnant mums were told to rest up, not to put their body under any stress whatsoever and never to let their heart rate climb over 120bpm. However, with more documented studies and in-depth research in recent years, there is more emphasis on the benefits of exercise during pregnancy and more knowledge (and thus reassurance) about whether or not it is safe. In 2005, the Journal of General Internal Medicine highlighted exercise during pregnancy as an effective tool for preventing a decline in physical function and emotional health. In 2002, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ACOG), opined that: “In the absence of either medical or obstetric complications, 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise a day on most, if not all, days of the week is recommended for pregnant women.” Studies have also highlighted the numerous benefits of a modified exercise regime throughout your pregnancy, including: 1. Decreasing the chance of pregnancy related incontinence

by Ross Lucas Incontinence is a serious problem for 50% of Australian women following the birth of their baby, which can be due to the lack of strength in the lower abdominals and pelvic floor muscles. Kegel exercises are an integral part of all prenatal and postnatal exercise programs in helping to strengthen this region. 2. Prepare for childbirth It makes perfect sense: the better shape you’re in, the stronger you’ll be come labour and delivery time. Research indicates that training for childbirth through resistance exercises may ease labour and even shorten the time it takes to deliver your baby. 3. Get your pre-baby body back faster This alone is motivation enough for many women to continue exercising throughout their pregnancy. When you have maintained your strength and muscle tone throughout your pregnancy, your body will have an easier time bouncing back after you give birth. It is imperative that you consult with a health practitioner before undergoing any exercise program during pregnancy. Blended Family Blended families are more and more common today as single parents have the courage to trust again and re-partner. This can be a blessing to feel like a complete family again, but the reality is... it is not like the Brady Bunch. Families soon find there are many hurdles. Here are a few myths that can trap new blended parents. EVERYONE WILL LOVE EACH OTHER.......

We all want to have relationships that we see in the marketing - where kids and adults frolic in white outfits in designer homes, love and intimacy abound. However, you do not have the same history with your step children as you do with your biological children – carrying them for 9 months, giving birth, breastfeeding them as a helpless baby, watching them grow and nurturing them through injuries etc. As a step parent do not expect yourself to love your step children in the same way you love your own. Also, your step children will not love you in the same way they love their own parent. Love takes time to grow, it doesn't come with marriage vows. It is unfair to demand this of yourself or them. FUN ACTIVITIES WILL BOND US INTO A NEW FAMILY UNIT

From 15 or so teenagers are starting to separate from the tight family unit. This is normal and is characterised with peers becoming more important, increasing steps into independence, living by their own rules and social codes rather than parents', discovering and exploring separate opinions and ideas, and spending more time away from the family physically and emotionally. This is normal behaviour and if managed well, prepares teens for adulthood. It is hard therefore for a teenager in a newly blended family to be expected to swim against

this tide of separation and start to BOND with a new parent and siblings. Being aware of this and allowing your teen freedom to separate as well as giving opportunities to bond if they wish will reduce unnecessary conflict. I'LL BE A BETTER AND MORE LOVING PARENT THAN

THEIR PREVIOUS ONE...

No matter how healthy or unhealthy your step children's relationships are with their biological parent, that relationship will always be significant and can never be replaced. Often a step child will feel they are being disloyal to their biological mother if they get along with you, the step mother. This can happen even if they hold a lot of anger towards their biological mother. Trying to outdo the other parent only forces the child into having to take sides and may make them feel guilty or angry. Rather than try and replace, be genuine and let a new relationship gradually grow. IT’S BEST TO PROVIDE A UNITED PARENTAL FRONT........

The belief is that if we are united in our discipline then the children will not try and pit their biological parent against their step parent. Although this has some credence to it, step children greatly resent being disciplined by the step parent. Two options can work here depending a lot on the ages of the kids. With older kids, it is best that the biological parent does the discipline, but the rules must be the same for both sets of kids. Having “House Rules” rather than: “Do this because I said so”, can also be less likely to inflame the situation. With younger kids, the biological parent talking to the child with the step parent present shows unity. Young kids will find it easier to accept discipline, as they are used to this from most adults.

Myths.......

by Jo McDonough THE KIDS WILL LOVE HAVING MORE SIBLINGS AND A BIG FAMILY TO PLAY WITH.........

We have known for a long time the impact of a child's position in the family on their identity. When a family blends, these dynamics get thrown around. The youngest may now be in the middle, the eldest boy may now be the younger brother; the only child now has to share attention; girls suddenly find themselves with boys. This can all produce confusion, resentment, insecurity and anger.

‘Be romantic and let love conquer all’ WE'LL BE TOGETHER AT LAST......

Finding peaceful time together can be very hard for step parents. You missed out on those early years of marriage where there are no kids and you are intimate and close, have romantic dinners out, stay in bed on the weekends, and the future holds endless opportunities. Instead you have been joined together along with a bunch of kids, there is no free time, no holidays alone, often no honeymoon, little opportunity for sex and your differences are far greater due to pre-existing married life and parenting experiences, than a young couple in their first marriage. Making time for yourself as a couple is challenging but ESSENTIAL. Investing money into baby sitting will do far more for your family than a new leather couch. If your kids go every 2nd weekend to their other home, spend as much of this time as you can being romantic together. Re-schedule work, go out to an expensive restaurant, walk along the beach, sip wine and gaze at the stars, linger in the moment (the housework can wait). Be romantic and let love conquer all.

Children are not good at identifying complex emotions and are unlikely to be able to articulate how they feel, but HUGE changes have taken place for them, and the parent that used to be their unwavering support when things got tough, has also changed or perhaps even left. Children are said to be resilient to change, but it will be important to recognise that they may be fine playing with step siblings one day, and morose or having tantrums the next. Parents can help by being patient and giving kids permission to talk about their anger and letting them know that what they feel is normal. Helping them to find healthy ways to express this rather than discounting it or punishing them for it will make the process easier. Finally it takes about 7 years for a blended family to blend. So be patient, get professional help if the struggle is getting too hard or you are losing your love for your new spouse. Be gracious to each other and remember why you love each other.
