Welcome to the combined Dec/Jan edition of Your Child in Whittlesea! It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas..... In this issue, we will be announcing our Christmas Competition Winners! We had a large number of entries and 6 lucky readers will be receiving shopping and dining vouchers valued at $50 each. Here is the answer to the question “How many presents were hidden in the pages of our November 2013 issue?”
THERE WERE 8 CHRISTMAS PRESENTS IN OUR NOVEMBER MAGAZINE Eighty percent of entries had the correct answer. See page 16 for the names of the winners and what each of them has won. We had a successful Christmas colouring competition in our Kids Corner last month. The winner receives a filled Chistmas stocking courtesy of Your Child in Whittlesea. Everyone who entered will receive a participation certificate and a small gift. See our Kids Corner on page 25 for the winning entry. We also had two of our readers, Roslynne from Roxburgh Park & Claire from Doreen win the “From Stuffed to Sorted” and “Paper Flow” books in our Book Giveaway in October. BUSINESS OF THE MONTH The Gymsports Academy of Movement & Excellence offers a range of gymnastics classes, including programs for crawlers through to adults. Kindergym is a program designed for boys and girls under 5 years of age that aims to develop the basic fundamentals of gymnastics movement and fitness. Adult gymnastics fitness classes are also available for men and women of all ages, allowing each individual to work at their own pace. These routines focus on strength, flex and core development with the use of traditional gymnastics apparatus. Gymsports offers General Gymnastics classes for boys and girls aged 5-17 years, which is designed to teach the basics and fundamentals of gymnastics in a fun and safe environment. Gymnasts build strength, flexibility, coordination, balance as well as developing confidence and positive self-esteem. Gymsport also offers special classes with emphases on Dance Dynamics, Tumbling, Acrobatics and Cheerleading. These program options can also be applied to their unique children's b i r t h d ay p a r t i e s h e l d o n weekends and school holidays. In Term 4, 2013 Gym-Access was launched due to an overwhelming demand for gymnastics for children with additional needs. Children and carers participate in the fully set up artistic gymnastics facility instructed by qualified and professional staff. In 2014 Gymsports will also expand into alternative fitness options for children and teens interested in cross training for other sports and programs, also catering for experienced dancers or calisthenics girls wanting to improve their cartwheels, handstands, walkovers and aerial skills. This Summer, Gymsports Academy relaunches its SUMMER SERIES HOLIDAY CLINICS for gymnastics, dance and movement fun all summer long from Monday 6th January to Friday 24th January 2014.

Summer Sizzler at
Thomastown Neighbourhood House As summer comes around many parents, me included, inwardly groan at the thought of : the endless days ahead that need to be filled, finding the $ to fund all of those days out, all of those ice creams to buy and all of those responses you have to give to: 'I'm bored'. I am privileged to be manager of Thomastown Neighbourhood House and privileged to work with an amazing group of volunteers. We put our heads together and have come up with a great family day out for the end of the year as part of our series of events called Totally Thomastown: Summer Sizzler the seventh day in December, is dedicated to offering families great things to do over summer, including wild rides at Luna Park, getting back to basics with boxes of chalk for the back yard, skipping ropes and a crazy game of 'spit the pip' how far can you spit a water melon pip? Thomastown Neighbourhood House offers all the usual neighbourhood house activities, computer classes, playgroups, and a meditation class, our door is always open and the kettle is always on and we also run amazing free Family Days called Totally Thomastown. We have brought snow to Thomastown, the World Cardboard Challenge, even Dame Edna's stunt double made an appearance at one of our events. It's all about connecting, offering families in Thomastown a free family day out, it's truly magic to watch kids at our events as they go to the petting farm , have their face painted and enjoy the atmosphere. Since January we have had over 3,000 families attend our events. Neighbourhood Houses are important organisations in the fabric of local communities. Find your local neighbourhood House or Community Centre you never know what will be on offer.
