It was with a sense of optimism and excitement that we opened our doors to the vibrant rapidly changing community of Doreen and welcomed new families and staff to St Paul the Apostle Catholic Primary School at the commencement of Term One, 2015. Through the inspired work of the Local Steering Committee (comprising Fr Martin Ashe PP, John Mills ‐ Regional Manager Northern CEOM, Patrick Love ‐ Manager Planning CEOM, David Vilchez ‐ Manager CAM, Owen West and Davis Kunciunas ‐ Project Architects Hayball and members of the CEOM and our parish) stage one of our building project was completed in January 2015. The contemporary design of the buildings and the flexible learning spaces cater for different approaches to learning and teaching. Connectedness of settings enable students to stay 'in the flow' of their learning focus, moving seamlessly from one experience to another. Children also have access to covered outdoor learning spaces (including our highly accessible welcome court area) which stimulate alternative ways of thinking and help children to make authentic connections with their extended outdoor environment. On Friday 22 May, in the presence of over two hundred invited guests, families, staff and most importantly our fifty‐two excited children from Years Prep to Six, Archbishop Denis Hart invited us to pray for our new school community and accompanied by our Parish Priest, Fr Martin Ashe, blessed our buildings and facilities. Archbishop Hart then joined with Senator the Hon. Scott Ryan (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education and Training) to officially open our school. The unveiling of the plaque, acknowledged the significant contributions made by the Australian Government, the Catholic Education Office Melbourne, the Archdiocese of Melbourne and our newly formed parish of Mernda Whittlesea, Kinglake and Doreen (three years young). The Foundation Principal, Mr Phil Doherty thanked the invited guests and families and made special mention of the enormous efforts of the Local Steering Committee along with Hayball Architects and Devco Construction, for their vision and passion in bringing the hopes and dreams of the community into a reality. Inspired by the model of St Paul the Apostle, we aspire to be a vibrant, welcoming and inclusive community where Christian values and a strong social justice conscience are embedded and acted upon. In partnership with families and the wider community, we remain determined to provide our 21st century children, with powerful opportunities to learn through the provision of a thinking curriculum that is rich, rigorous and relevant within a stimulating and supportive environment.
