Edi t orsLetter EditorsLetter Hello and welcome to the July edition of Your Child in Whittlesea Magazine, Can you believe it, School Holidays are back again? In this months magazine you will find some great ideas to keep the kids busy. What’s On can be found on page 22, with some interesting activities at your local library. Hannah was out again this month visiting a local park in Mill Park - remember if it’s not raining the park is a fantastic place for adventure and hours of outdoor play. Kids Corner has some fun things to make and colour on page 26. The Kids in Kitchen Mini Chef this month is Mackenzie - she created some gorgeous Christmas in July - ‘Gingerbread Men’. The house smelt lovely as they cooked, while it rained outside. All the kids sat down to a cup of warm Milo and a gingerbread man, and we read the story of ‘The Gingerbread Man’ a family favourite. The recipe can be found on page 11. When the kids are busy and you find five minutes to snuggle up with a hot cuppa, there is some amazing reading in this months magazine. There is an article on page 14 which explains what STEM education is. Page 24 explores ‘Are Your Kids Ready to Fly Solo’, and ‘The importance of continuing swimming lessons year round’, can be found on page 12. Hannah visited the Mill Park Recrea onal Reserve this month in fantas c Winter Sunshine. (Yes, there were lots of puddles ... so gumboots would have been useful! - Hannah le her’s in the car ...) The play ground is suitable for young children, with lots of climbing walls, rockers, a spinner, 2 slides, 4 swings (including a disability swing) and lots of other play pieces. The park has an undercover area, a BBQ, 2 tables and chairs, 2 rubbish bins, a drinking fountain, and some great Australian play animals around however, no toilets. Hannah’s p of the month - Try everything! (While at the park also to listen hard and watch out for all the beau ful bird life.!)

Gingerbread Men Ingredients 125g bu er, so ened 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed 1/2 cup golden syrup 1 egg, separated & 1 egg white, extra 2 1/2 cups plain flour 1 tbsp ground ginger 1 tsp mixed spice 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 cups icing sugar 150g packet Smar es or chocolate bu ons
Method Step 1 - Preheat oven to 180C (160C fan-forced.) Step 2 - Cream bu er and brown sugar together using an electric beater. Step 3 - Add egg yolk and golden syrup to mix un l combined. Step 4 - Add flour, ginger, mixed spice and bicarb soda and combine. (It might look a bit crumbly, but don’t worry - it works!) Step 5 - Place dough between two pieces of baking paper and roll, then using a cookie cu er cut Gingerbread Men. (Re-roll as needed but keep using the baking paper.) Step 6 - Move cut shapes to a greased baking tray and bake for 8-10 minutes. Step 7 - Once baked, let cool for 10 minutes on the tray and transfer to cooling racks. Step 8 - To make icing, beat the 2 egg white un l they are s ff peaks, add the si ed icing sugar and combine with a few drops of lemon juice and colour if needed. Place into a piping bag and decorate the Gingerbread Men with the icing and Smar es.
