Editors Notice Board Welcome to my first edition of your Child in Whittlesea. It only feels like yesterday that my little girl started four-year-old kinder, and now Easter is just around the corner. Our magazine provides interesting articles, handy phone numbers, a What's On /Community Page and a kids corner. It is the intention of Your Child to promote businesses in, and local to Whittlesea. This month there are some wonderful events - The Community Festival on Sunday, 20 March 2016 from 12.30 to 9.00pm, offers a huge range of activities and cultural events for families. The Mill Park library has their first Early Years, baby and toddler expo to be held on March 19 from 11am to 3pm. The City of Whittlesea libraries have lots of fun Easter activities for children to attend. We endeavour to link local families – our readers with local businesses – our advertisers in the community. If you visit one of the businesses advertising with us, please let them know you saw them in Your Child in Whittlesea and thank them for their support. Are you looking for a school to enrol your child or children in – then consider Gilson College, Kilmore International, St Pauls the Apostle Catholic PS or Ivanhoe Grammar. Now that kids are back at school, it's also a great time to consider tutoring for your child, Kip McGrath Mill Park can help children improve their English, reading, writing, comprehension and maths skills. I am always on the outlook for a location for a party – why not try Bundoora Action Sports/ Inflatable World. Are you looking for some activities for your kids, try Ready Steady Go's multi-sport program or Gymsports Academy of Movement and Excellence. The City of Whittlesea has some great parks; I will be reviewing parks in my “Fun with Frances “page. If there is a park you would like to see included, please email info@yourchildinwhittlesea.aom.au. We would like to encourage kids to write in and share their stories, jokes and ideas. Children are also encouraged to have fun in our “Kids Corner”. We frequently have completions for our young readers, so keep an eye for details in our magazines or on our Facebook pages. The Your Child in Whittlesea Facebook page is regularly updated with news and events that are relevant to our readers, so make sure you visit our Facebook page and “like” to receive useful updates and be a part of the Your Child in Whittlesea community. We hope you enjoy my first edition of Your Child in Whittlesea and look forward to the next issue in April. Remember to shop local, support our wonderful advertisers and thank you for taking Your Child into your home. Until next month take care and enjoy your Easter. Teresa Weir in

‘Easter’ What does it mean to us? Easter traditions

Religious observances There are a number of observances and feast days related to Easter.

Christians remember: Maundy Thursday as the day of the Last Supper, when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and established the ceremony known as the Eucharist. The night of Maundy Thursday is the night on which Jesus was betrayed by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane. Roman Catholic Church services feature a ceremony in which the priest washes the feet of 12 people to commemorate Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. Good Friday the Friday before Easter, commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and is a day of mourning in Christian churches. Easter Sunday is the commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is celebrated with great enjoyment by Christians. Churches are usually filled with flowers and the celebrations include the singing of special hymns. Ascension Day marks the last earthly appearance of Christ after his resurrection. Christians believe Christ ascended into heaven. It is celebrated 40 days after Easter. Pentecost is celebrated on the seventh Sunday after Easter. Pentecost comes from a Jewish harvest festival called Shavuot. The apostles of Jesus were celebrating this festival when the Holy Spirit descended on them. Pentecost marks the birth of the Christian Church.

Hot Cross Buns

Hot cross buns are sweet, spiced buns made with dried fruit and leavened with yeast. A cross, the symbol of Christ, is placed on top of the buns, either with pastry or a simple mixture of flour and water. The buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday.

Easter Eggs Eggs, symbolising new life, have long been associated with the Easter festival. Chocolate Easter eggs, are a favourite part of Easter in Australia. Some families and community groups organise Easter egg hunts for children in parks and recreational areas. Easter eggs are traditionally eaten on Easter Sunday.

The Easter Bilby 'A new Australian Tradition' Rabbits are an introduced species in Australia and are unpopular because of the damage they do to the land. In 1991 a campaign was started b y t h e Anti-Rabbit Research Foundation to replace the Easter Bunny with the Ea ste r B i l b y ( a n endangered species). Author Jenny Bright wrote a children's story called Burra Nimu the Easter Bilby to support the campaign.

Shopping - When I Grow UP!

by Irene Goonan All shopping areas ask what they need to change to be relevant to the shopping needs of the next generation! With all the changes in technology, shopping habits and product choices- we all wonder what will the future of shopping hold. Where better to go than to a kindergarten in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne and be inspired by theses amazing little people. The brief was ‘what do you like to do when you go shopping now’- and ‘what will you buy and how will you get there when you grow up’! The perfect answer re what do you like now was from a delightful child who immediately said she wanted to play when she goes shopping! Perhaps that is what we all wish we could do?? So- what treasures were unearthed about shopping in the future?? Some of the responses are amazing- and many are very wise! Eating fresh fruit and vegetables was a major interest to these children. I will go to Woolworths by bus- I will buy kiwis + grapes (Eyan) I will go to Coles + buy carrots, pineapple + lollipops (Zahlia) Some of the imaginations were excitingI will go in a floating car + buy a girl suit (Natalie) I will go to the Spotty Shop to buy a motorbike on my wheelbarrow (Conrad) Maybe we can learn much from their dreams of the futureI will go to the shops by scooter + buy a castle + a princess (Isabelle) I will buy a footyball by a flying car(Aryan) Some of the basic needs will stay the sameI will buy a coffee machine (Eddie) I will go by bike to buy apples, carrots + potatoes (Maya) And the future generations are also being consideredI will buy a rocket ship for my kids (Xander) I will buy clothes for my children (Daisy) Even the travel experience has been given considerationI will buy toys for my kids. I will turn there + there + then park (Murphy) I will buy a Lego TV. I will walk to Coles or drive to the faraway shops (Dominic) So for all of us that are visioning the cities of the future- and how they will service the needs of the next generation, there are some wise lessons to be learnt from the minds of our young- the consumers of tomorrow! Some of the most important aspects is the eating healthy foods- the great imagination of how they will travel- and they even have dreams of the next generation! Learning is a result of listening, which in turn leads to even better listening and attentiveness to the other person. In other words, to learn from the child, we must have empathy, and empathy grows as we learn. New Year, With childhood obesity on the rise and other childhood diseases becoming more prominent I believe it is only fitting to start the New Year with a new lunch box menu. Say goodbye to junk food and hello to a new way of eating. Below is a table of common lunch box nasties and tasty, healthier alternatives.

Lunch box nasties

Healthy alternatives

Potato chips Doritos Juice popper/ cordial Chocolate bar Muffin/brownie White bread sandwiches with vegemite/peanut butter/ jam/nutella Ÿ Soft drink Ÿ Lollies Ÿ LCM bars and certain muesli bars which are full of sugar Ÿ Rollups Ÿ Cookies

Rice crackers Bottle of Water Tub of yogurt Piece of fruit Carrot/celery sticks Can of tuna Nuts, seeds and dried fruit Wholemeal/multi grain sandwich or wrap with avocado, cucumber, lettuce and chicken/ham. Ÿ Salad Ÿ Rice paper rolls Ÿ Spinach & Fetta Slice/mini quiche bites Ÿ Quinoa/tuna/chicken balls

Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Two healthy alternative recipes are: Spinach and Fetta Slice (Gluten Free) Ingredients: 4 eggs 200g Fetta Cheese 2 tablespoons Ricotta cheese 250g Spinach 1 cup Shredded Tasty cheese Method: Whisk eggs, and then mix in all other ingredients. Pour into a greased slice tin and bake until golden brown and cooked through, approximately 30-40minutes in moderate oven. Note: An alternative to the Spinach and Fetta is to substitute 1 cup pineapple pieces and 1 cup diced ham for a delicious Ham and Pineapple slice. 12

New Lunch Box

by Rachael Duncan

Tuna Balls (Gluten free and dairy free) Ingredients: 1 425g can of Tuna (drained) 1 Corn cob raw (kernels removed) 2 Spring Onions finely diced 1 cup cooked Brown Rice 2 Eggs ½ cup Rice Flour Sweet Chilli Sauce Salt and Pepper Rice Crumbs to coat Method: Choose a good quality tuna in olive oil or spring water for this recipe. Mix all ingredients together and form small balls. Lightly dust with rice crumbs and bake until golden. Approximately 30 minutes in medium oven. Makes approximately 16 balls. For a refreshing healthy sauce, serve with natural yogurt blended with chopped coriander, mint, a little cumin powder and finely diced cucumber.

These recipes plus many more healthy alternative lunch box recipes are from The Lunchbox Revolution by Mona Hecke . Giving your child the fuel they need to concentrate more at school starts with a good breakfast. A few good breakfast suggestions are: Ÿ Muesli and banana on yogurt Ÿ Eggs on wholemeal toast Ÿ Omelette Ÿ Porridge Ÿ A good cereal including a number of grains and seeds and fruit. Get your child active this summer. Get them involved in a swimming class, dancing or sports club. You, as the parent, have the power to control what goes into your child's mouth. Maybe it is time to reassess your pantry and its time to throw away the junk. If it is not in your pantry, your children won't be able to eat it! Start the new year with a healthier lunchbox! Fun with Frances

The City of Whittlesea has some great parks where I can spend some time with my daughter Frances. This month we visited Lehmann's Farm Park Play space in Epping North. It is split into four areas and created to reflect the agricultural and domestic activities that would have taken place at the time of Lehmann's Farm being an operational dairy, such as pasture, processing and past domestic spaces. The past domestic space provides digging, discovery, interpretive elements and is complete with pumpkin and watermelon sculptures to jump and play on. The pasture space has a range of raised artificial turf mounds to represent paddocks that cows roam within. There is plenty of space to run and climb up and down. Nearby, there are swings and a climbing rope tower. The upper space reflects some of the processes of the dairy such as the milk spinner, the cheese block scramble and the butter block. A range of fun fences separate the spaces, some for clambering over and some for sneaking or peeking through. Under a rustic shelter there is a roller slide and milk churn slide. These are placed within a maze with discovery elements, timber walkways and ramps and holes to hide in. There are two sheltered barbeques and picnic tables, however there are no toilets. Accidental Healthy Treats Recipes

by Sarah Leung

CHOCOLATE BARK Ingredients 1 cup coconut oil, melted â…“ cup coconut sugar 2 tbsp honey 1 cup cocoa powder 1 tsp pure vanilla extract Optional toppings: Almonds, goji berries, pistachios, coconut chips, himalayan sea salt Line a 20cm x 20cm tray with baking paper. You can also use cupcake molds and line these with cupcake liners! Whisk melted coconut oil, coconut sugar, cocoa powder and vanilla extract together in a bowl until fully combined. Spoon honey into mixture and mix (you may want to add each spoonful in and taste to level of preferred sweetness). Pour chocolate mixture into tray or cupcake molds. Place these in the fridge for about 1 minute to slightly set (not too long or it might harden all the way through). Take the mixture out from fridge and top the chocolate with any toppings you like. We used chopped almonds, goji berries, pistachios, coconut chips and himalayan sea salt. Toppings are strongly suggested! Place tray or cupcake molds into the freezer for approximately 30 minutes or until hardened. If the chocolate is in the tray, remove from tray and break up the chocolate into smaller portions. Store the chocolate for up to 1 month in the freezer or 2 weeks in the fridge. CHIA PUDDING PARFAIT Ingredients 1/4 cup chia 1/2 cup almond milk 1/4 cup coconut milk 1 tsp honey 1/2 tsp vanilla paste 5 strawberries, cut into small pieces 5 walnuts or 10 pistachio nuts Mix chia seeds with honey, vanilla paste, coconut milk and almond milk, whisk and set aside until chia seeds become thick and gel formed. Arrange strawberries, chia seeds and walnut into a small glass. Optional: chill in the fridge for an hour prior to serving.

Drowning In Parenthood? by Jackie Hall

Start Here: Quite often I read the posts of people introducing themselves on my Live programs, and I think “Wow, you've got so much going on. Where should we start first.” So this article is to help those of you who are feeling this way about your life and parenthood. My first question that will get you focused on the direction of change is… “What do you want?” A seemingly simple question, yet one that is not often answered with specifics, or if it is, it is answered as more than a wish then a serious goal or expectation. But this by far is the most important question to ask yourself when you feel like you're drowning, because we often get sucked into the vortex of seeing everything we don't have. I can tell you from personal and professional experience, that there are no solutions down that road. What is it that you want in your parenting experience? What sort of relationship do you want with your kids, your partner, your family, etc.? What does the ideal work/life balance look like? What sort of person do you want to be? Sit down with yourself and look at every area of your life you don't like and try to find its opposite. What would the ideal of that aspect of your life look like? What sort of life do you want to create for yourself? What would make you happy? When you've done that, ask yourself whether 20

you have been specific about these wants. Would you be able to measure if you had achieved them? Or can you be even more specific? Knowing what you want is the first step to changing your life, because it gives you a direction to go in. From this point, you can then begin to focus on how to get this information, where you can find the information that will help you to get there and who can teach it to you. Struggles in life don't mean a failed life. They just mean you've lost your direction, or you haven't yet learnt the skills required to get you there. Don't waste time thinking about that though, just focus on what you want and how to learn so you can get there! Your mind will always find evidence of what you have your attention on. If you focus on what you don't have and what you don't like about life your mind will keep showing you proof that you don' t have what you want and why you shouldn't like it. Deliberately refocus your attention, get specific and free yourself from your old stories. It's time to redesign your life and it can start today. Journey to

T

here's a lot of talk about organics with many people switching to organics. I like to think of it not so much as switching to but switching back to. After all it was how we originally enjoyed all our food. With that in mind here's some information to explain what it means to us in 2016, to our environment and animals when we're talking about organic food. My journey began when I started to learn more about how our food was treated and what that meant to me and the environment. The processes for organic farming follow a high set of standards that guarantee specific practices are used. Australia has established organic certifications that require all organic foods to meet strict government standards. These standards regulate how such foods are grown, handled, and processed. All certified organic product and produce comes with this certification either on the product itself or on the box it comes in. By law, organic farmers are required to raise animals without the use of antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones. Plus, organic farmers must provide animals with 100%

organic feed and safe, clean, cage-free indoor and outdoor living conditions. Including things like providing perches for chickens, so much more comprehensive than many realise. Conventional farming uses pesticides which are chemicals such as fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides, the residues remain on (and in) the food we eat. Organic farmers use insect traps, careful crop selection (disease-resistant varieties), predator insects or beneficial microorganisms instead to control cropdamaging pests. Organically grown produce means avoidance of synthetic chemicals which includes fertiliser, pesticides, antibiotics, food additives, irradiation, the use of sewage sludge and also GMO. Organic farming practices reduce pollution (air, water, soil), conserve water, reduce soil erosion, increase soil fertility, and use less energy. Farming without pesticides is also better for nearby birds and small animals as well as people who live nearby or work on farms. Thus ensuring a safer and healthier world for future generations to live in. Products labeled certified organic often reflect higher prices because the production process is

Organics often on a much smaller scale with more labour, management-intensive practices and stricter regulations as well as smaller crop yields at times. Organic food is more often sold locally, resulting in availability of super fresh produce in the market, which then tastes better than produce that has been frozen or shipped or transported across long distances. Generally speaking it is always fresher as it doesn't have any preservatives to make it last longer.

I enjoy knowing my food has been grown as naturally as possible this to me makes it not only taste better, but it has that feel good factor too!
