Edi t orsLetter EditorsLetter Welcome to the May on-line edition of Your Child in Whittlesea Magazine, Well, what a strange time we are currently living in ... with work from home (for some, but not all), school from home for our children, no sport or activities and only going out for essential items - life can feel a little odd. This month’s magazine tries to give parents lots of different ideas to keep their children busy. We are very luck to be able to offer an Amazing Bumper Book Review and Book Giveaway to our readers this month, the book review starts on page 8 ‘Kids in the Kitchen’ this month is a little different we have Mothers Day breakfast and afternoon tea covered. We are looking back at ideas from previous magazines to help dads and the kids to prepare some mouth watering treats for Mum. See page 20 & 21 for the recipes. Under the current restrictions Hannah cannot visit the local park, so this month in ‘Hanging with Hannah’ she is making a Mothers Day Gift on page 26. There is no What’s On in this month magazine, however, on page 6 the Local Library has an article ‘Your Library at Home’ with lots of things to do inside your own home. Wishing all Mothers, Grandmothers and Step Mothers ... a very Happy Mothers Day,

Rachel

Bringing Cheer to the Neighbourhood If you have been out going for a walk around your local neighbourhood over the last few weeks while doing your daily exercise, I’m sure you would have seen the lovely colourful artwork on the footpaths and in windows. The concept is easy create beau ful rainbow colourful pictures, these can be made from many dierent methods, paint, pencil, chalk, material, you can even use Lego bricks. Then you place your beau ful art work in a window that faces the footpath or you may even choose to decorate the footpath with chalk rainbows. And the best part of this is that when the rain comes you can go out and start again. I must say I love walking around with my children and seeing all the amazing drawings done by all the children and some grown ups. In this me of lock down it is great to see the kids having fun, with these cheerful ac vi es that can brighten the day of an elderly ci zen or a essen al worker. Kids keep up the good work making our local area into a beau fully, colourful place to live!

YOU WILL NEED: · Plaster of Paris · Water

Homemade Chalk

· Food Colourings or Powdered Tempera Paint · Moulds · Mixing bowl · Spoon to mix

WHAT TO DO: 1) Add 1/2 cup of plaster of Paris powder to 1/4 cup water (ra o 2:1). (IMPORTANT: Always add plaster of Paris powder to the water—not the other way around!) 2) COLOUR MAGIC!! Add 6 - 8 drops of food colour or 1 heaped tbsp of powdered tempera paint and mix thoroughly. If you use food colouring the chalks will dry off lighter so it you want bright chalk try using the tempera paint. 3) Make sure you have no lumps. You will need to mix quickly before it starts to thicken! (It should resemble pancake mix. Add some more water if it’s too thick.) 4) Spoon the mixture into your chosen moulds making sure there are no air bubbles and the mould is full. We used Easter egg moulds but you could also use toilet rolls that have been sealed with masking tape on one end. 5) Now comes the hardest part!! WAITING!! It will take at least 24 hours for them to dry - if it's a nice day you could leave them out in the sunshine to help speed it up. Once completely dry pop them out of the moulds and start having fun crea ng some beau ful artwork!!
