EditorsLetter Welcome to the November issue of Your Child in Whittlesea, I am very excited to be starting this new adventure and writing my first Editors Letter. This month we have some interesting articles to read, ‘The Magic of Storytelling’ can be found on page 6, on page 10 ‘Is Coding The New Literacy?’ A must read especially for parents of school aged children. With Spring here it is time to get outside and enjoy ‘The Benefits of Barefoot Play!’ on page 18, and ‘Climbing Trees’ on page 25. With the warmer weather approaching, I hope you will be able to take advantage of our new page ‘Hanging with Hannah,’ featuring a different local park each month from within the City of Whittlesea. Kids Corner this month has an Australian Animal and Birds theme, with jokes and a missing letter quiz. You will also find the instruction on how to create your own Miniature Secret Garden. Remember contributions are welcome from our readers and their families, if you have something that may interest your local community please share it with us. I hope you enjoy reading the November edition, till next month,
Rachel

Tips to ensure you are financially Having a baby is one of the most exciting and scary times in your life. Getting on top of your finances can help alleviate some of the pressure, so that you can enjoy your time with your newborn. On average, if you are an expectant mum, you will be aged 30.7 years. If you are an expectant dad, you will be aged 33.* You are roughly twice more likely to be married than not and you will likely end up with more than one child.** The National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) has calculated the cost of raising two children between the ages of 0 and
4, for middle income families to be $133 per week (or $6,916 per year). This cost rises as your children grow older. NATSEM estimates the cost for middle income earners of raising two children rises to $228 for children between the age of 10 and 14 and $678 per week for children between 18 and 24^. Where does all the money go? prepared for starting a family by Justin Cilmi Of course, these figures are illustrative and your family is bound to be different. However, there are some common financial issues you will share with the other 300,000 families expecting a baby this year and some ideas on how to manage these are outlined below. 1. Reduced income, increased expenses Money will be tight for the first few years as you adjust to one of you not working and you take on extra expenses such as nappies, baby food, and childcare. Prepare a budget listing all your income and expenses and use this to prioritise “nice to have” items such as a bigger car or a family holiday. Do a cost/benefit analysis including childcare costs and potential government benefits of one parent being a full-time carer vs both of you working full-time vs one of you working parttime. Before your family income reduces, you may wish to consider re-financing your mortgage to alleviate any cash flow stresses. 2. Save early and save consistently Set yourself realistic savings goals (for example a $5,000 baby nursery fund, a $10,000 education fund) or percentage of salary to save (e.g. 20% of after tax salary). Generally, the earlier you start to save, especially while you are still working, the better the financial outcome. 3. Make the most of government assistance Find out as much as you can about various government benefits and entitlements such as the Newborn Supplement, Family Tax Benefit Parts A and B, Child Care Benefit, Child Care Rebate and Paid Parental leave. You may be eligible for more than one of the payments. 4. Invest smart
Parenting can have its financial advantages. Talk to your financial adviser about investing in assets in the non-working parent’s name and spouse super contributions to attract any tax offsets that may be available to you. 5. Protect your family against the worst Set your mind at ease by reviewing your life insurance, health insurance and estate plan before the baby arrives to make sure they incorporate your life changes. At the very least check that life insurance cover through your super continues if/when your employer contributions cease and that you have a valid Will (including guardians) in place. 6. Seek financial advice Having a child can be an exciting but also financially stressful time. To ensure you are financially prepared and have the right plans in place for the arrival of your baby, please speak to financial adviser. *Australian Bureau of Statistics ‘Births, Australia, 2012' **Australian Bureau of Statistics ‘Family Characteristics Survey 2009-10'. ^ National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) ‘The cost of raising children in Australia’ AMP. NATSEM Income and Wealth Report, May 2013. Please note this statistic refers to the average cost of raising a child for a middle income two child family at December 2012. Middle income families are defined as the middle three-fifths of all couples with children, ranked by their gross income.

Crn Breadalbane Ave & Renaissance Blvd, Mernda It looks to be a fairly new playground and has more to offer than most parks. It has playground equipment suitable for both toddlers and older children. There are three slides for different levels of confidence, a see- saw, monkey bar and 6 swings to keep the children entertained. There is also a large climbing frame to keep the older children busy. There are 4 separate covered in areas with two tables and bbq facili es for picnics in the park. There are also park benches, drinking fountains plus drink taps for dogs. The park even has a largish green space for kicking a ball or to run around on, but there are no toilets. Remember to keep an eye for all the beau ful bu erflies and ladybugs flying around at this me of year. When we were at the park Hannah had a ladybird land on her shoulder for a visit. This caused great excitement and laughter.

Climbing Trees
ow many trees did you climb as a kid? Can you remember how much fun it was and what games you played in and around trees?
With the urban sprawl and different lifestyles, I would guess that kids don’t climb trees as much today as they did 5o years ago, or even 20 years ago. And I think it’s a pity that kids are missing out on such a simple, fun activity.
Trees to climb Obviously, children can only climb trees if there are trees to climb. And they should only be climbing if the trees are safe to climb and in safe environments. But that just means that parents, schools and local councils need to think about trees when planning gardens and parks for children to play in. That is, trees should be part of these play areas and by selecting the right trees in the beginning, adults can make a safe tree climbing environment. Good climbing trees have branches starting down low so little legs can reach far enough to start climbing. The best climbing trees also have long branches that extend out horizontally so there is room for children to sit and talk or lie in wait as Robin Hood or a panther or sleep for a

hundred years or… whatever else their imagination desires. Safe climbing trees are those with strong, rather than brittle, branches that will happily hold children in the air as they play. Strong trees include cumquats, loquats, oaks, woody wattles (e.g. Acacia elata & Acacia melanoxylon), old-fashioned apples and mulberry's, whereas apricot, peaches and willows are somewhat brittle and therefore less useful in a children’s area.
Why climb trees? Apart from the fact it should be a lot of fun, why should any child be encouraged and allowed to climb safe trees? v It brings them into direct contact with nature. v It means they are outside being active and getting some fresh air. v It can be a tactile experience touching different barks and leaves. v It develops coordination and strength. v It gives children a different perspective of their world. v Playing games in trees develops creativity. v Mastering a big tree or an adventure within the tree build confidence and self-esteem. v Children interact with others more in a tree than in front of a computer or TV. v It develops attention spans (compared to the rapid changes on electronic entertainments). v It assists in problem solving skills. v They might find some yummy, healthy fruit to eat. And you know what? Climbing Trees doesn't just have to be for kids... Why don't you climb a tree with them and have some fun, or climb up by yourself and take a different perspective on your life, too? Tash Hughes is a Mum of two in Melbourne. Secret Garden to Make Making a Miniature Secret Garden
If it's too chilly where you live to do too much gardening at the moment, remember that it's great weather for reading. A book that you would enjoy is "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Maybe someone (Grandma or Grandad perhaps) can read it to you. It will give you lots of wonderful ideas for making your own miniature secret garden. You will need: a shallow plastic or metal tray with holes in the bottom (The trays that nurseries use to hold their punnets of seedlings are perfect.), potting mix, small stones, pebbles, a jar lid, aluminium foil, a selection of small plants What you do:
1. Almost fill the tray with potting mix (or make your own mixture of compost, sand and peat moss.) 2. A jar lid covered in aluminium foil makes a good pond. Make a hole in the potting mix and press the lid down so the sides cannot be seen. Put some little flat stones around the edge. (Let them poke over the sides into the "pond" a bit.) 3. Your garden will look best if it is not all flat. Mound the potting mix up in a couple of places, make little raised beds surrounded by stones, group some bigger stones to look like boulders, make a winding little path with flat pebbles, sand or fine mulch. You can use pieces of gutter-guard to make screens and trellises. Satay sticks will help to keep it upright. 4. Plants with tiny leaves will look best. Baby's Tears, Pratia, Kennilworth Ivy, thyme, moss and tiny tree or shrub seedlings will all look great. Succulents are really terrific. 5. The garden will dry out quickly, so you must water it every day. A sprayer bottle filled with water will help you keep the garden moist. Keep it in a brightly-lit place where the www.global-garden.com.au water can drain through easily. To advertise in Your Child in Whittlesea Call 0455 312 166
