Editor’s Notice Board Welcome to the October 2015 issue of Your Child in Whittlesea! As we start Term 4 and prepare for the end of another year, I am yet again reminded for the need to slow down. Our society seems to be getting busier and busier, much to the detriment of our mental & physical health, not to mention our relationships. According to parenting expert & author Steve Biddulph, "75% of all discipline problems are caused by the hurry that parents are in.". How true! Family relationships need time, commitment and nurture in order to grow & thrive. Here are two parenting books which have some simple but profound & practical parenting tips.  “Happy Child, Happy Home: Conscious Parenting &

Creative Discipline” by Lou Harvey-Zahra (2014)  “Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids: How to Stop Yelling

and Start Connecting” by Dr Laura Markham (2012) At this time, the news coverage of the current European refugee crisis with the disturbing images of families & young children fleeing in the thousands, seeking safety & security, has affected many of us deeply. We may find ourselves overwhelmed. We may not be able to do much for those on the other side of the globe, but we can definitely reach out to those who are in need in our local community. In this issue we have a feature on the Food Justice Truck in Thomastown (pg 18), and the SHAK, meals with love in Mill Park (pg 29). These are just two of the many ways in which we can make a difference.

FOOD SECURITY & THE FOOD JUSTICE TRUCK

The Food Jus ce Truck is an award‐winning, mobile fresh food market that enhances food security for asylum seekers in the Victorian community by offering locally sourced produce including fresh fruit, vegetables, grains, legumes, tea and bread at a substan al discount. It's a social enterprise ini a ve by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) and was launched this year to tackle the growing food insecurity felt by more than 10,000 people in Victoria who are on bridging visas. It is the world's first retail model that enables the general public to invest in quality fresh food for their family, while re‐inves ng profits into affordable nutri ous food for asylum seekers. An asylum seeker is a person who has le their home country due to persecu on and is seeking protec on from harm in Australia, but have not yet been issued a legal status of refugee. More than 90% of people who seek protec on experience food insecurity, run out of food, and cannot afford to buy more. 40% have gone to bed hungry in the past month. 42% have lost weight since arriving in Australia because they did not have enough food to eat. The ability of people to achieve food security is limited by their restricted access to welfare and government or work related income. For many, with limited or no income the ASRC Foodbank is their main source of weekly food. 18

www.asrc.org.au/foodjustice The Food Jus ce Truck is open to anyone in the community. Being mobile, and mainly run by volunteers, the prices are compe ve. When local shoppers invest in quality, fresh and locally sourced produce (with low carbon miles) for their family, they are also suppor ng local producers, reducing the environmental impact of delivering fresh food to homes, and also suppor ng the ASRC to re‐invest profits into the provision of fresh food for asylum seekers at a price that they can afford. This unique social enterprise model improves the healthy ea ng habits of the community, promotes advocacy for asylum seekers and supports the environment.

For more informa on you can contact the ASRC on (03) 9326 6066 or email at foodjus cetruck@asrc.org.au
