EDITORIAL - BUSINESS OF THE MONTH UP, UP AND AWAY After
With families on the Northern Beaches struggling to contain their growing families, and the price of Real Estate once more sky rocketing, the question remains… Is it better to move or renovate?
Once families consider the costs of Stamp Duty, Conveyancing Fees, Real Estate Agents & Moving, and the inconvenience of the regular Open For Inspections, it's easy to understand why renovating is becoming a much more practical and realistic option. Nicole Thornton from BHE Building says she is fielding an increasing number of Sales enquiries of families wanting to Before create more space in their homes to secure their future. “Families are approaching us to create more space within their existing homes. Their children have already settled into their schools and they have already become active members of their communities. They are friendly with their neighbours and generally prefer to stay put rather than move. Creating an additional living level is surprisingly affordable and is a really quick way to create extra space. With over 95% of our clients choosing to live on site Before throughout the construction period, clients can save loads on rent while residing relatively undisturbed while we simply complete a new level above them. Before they know it they have an entire new living level.” Nicole states that an average First Floor Addition takes the team at BHE Building a mere ten to fifteen weeks to complete entirely. With careful and guidance and the right project partners, After adding a new level to your home can become the best investment you and your family can make, providing you with more space without encroaching on gardens, potential views and great aspects.

How To Keep Your Children Safe Online Leonie Smith is a Cyber Safety educator based on the Northern Beaches. Some of the most important points covered in recent talk held at the Covenant Christian School in Belrose addressed issues around parental supervision, social media and messaging apps that popular with kids. Ideas for safe computer use. And ways for parents to engage with their children about their computer and online use. Children are most vulnerable to being hurt online if they are using adult designed apps, or don't understand the need to set up privacy on the apps they are using to engage online. They may be a wiz on devices but still have no street smarts when it comes to engaging online with another child who is teasing them, or a complete stranger who they think is another child like them. Some of the points that were given at my talk that many parents found useful to address these issues were: 1. Set safe search options on search engines to block adult content at home. www.google.com/preferences 2. Set internet filtering for computers and modems like www.opendns.com to block and filter content unsuitable for children. 3. Set all privacy settings on all apps and online platforms for strict privacy settings. Try http://www.privacyfix.com to help set privacy settings on Facebook. 4. Set up parental controlled accounts on home computers and your children's mobile devices, so that they need to ask permission to download new apps. 5. Find out what is safe for your child to use online visit www.commonsensemedia.org for their great reviews. 6. Don't trust the online app store age limits, some dating apps like Zoosk are rated 4+ 7. However if an app is rated 17+ on the Apple store, it will be strictly for adults, follow the recommendations. 8. Kik Messenger now has adults-only apps enclosed within its messaging service. These include some “chat with new friends” app called Hey Hey and Butterfly a dating app, and now a snapchat like photo sharing app called photobomb. Be aware that Kik Messenger is no longer safe for children under 17 years of age. 9. Think about finding other alternative apps for your child to communicate with their friends online that don't encourage sharing profile names on other social media sites with privacy issues. Skype and iMessage or SMS are safer options, but only with strict privacy settings and parental supervision. Children shouldn't feel excluded if they are not allowed to use adult apps to communicate. 10. Find computer games to play with your children that encourage interaction and give you an insight into what they love about these games. Try “Words With Friends” or Portal 2. 11. Don't leave it up to schools to supervise and educate your children, get informed, attend the next cyber safety night. Children need informed and educated supervision at home on their internet connected devices. Teachers cannot be responsible for adult supervision after school hours. 12. Create a supportive parent community around cyber safety. Share ideas and make community pledges to help protect all children online from harm. Not all children follow all rules and may not have good parental supervision at home on computers. Find ways to ensure all children have a chance of staying safe online. by Leonie Smith www.thecybersafetylady.com.au

Community Service Men of League Foundation Northern Sydney Local Committee On 11 July a meeting was held at the New South Wales Leagues Club to launch the Men of League Foundation. The idea began with discussion between three visionary men: tough prop and then Judiciary Commissioner Jim Hall; Canterbury and Manly back Max Brown; and “Team of the Century” back-rower Ron Coote, who expressed his concerns for former players who were doing it tough.
company that the Foundation can provide. Over the past two years our committee has held golf days, bowling days and “Kick off Club” functions, where we were able to gather members of the rugby league community and their friends, and raise funds to assist those members who are doing it tough.
The Men of League Foundation has since grown to be the largest organisation of its kind in Australia. Support is now given to those from all levels of the game who have suffered an injury or illness and are in financial hardship, from grassroots canteen staff through to former NRL stars. More than $150,000 worth of Men of League memorabilia is made available annually to charities, junior rugby league clubs and school groups each year.

The Northern Sydney MOL Local Committee was established in August 2010, with Noel Kelly accepting the role as Patron and Neil Whittaker taking on the role of President. Pivotal to that work has been the appointment of volunteer welfare officers, who spend hours upon hours with those people in our area that have been identified as needing some of the support and

Welfare officers Ken Vessey and Fred Jackson visiting Manly stalwart Bernie Seymour Our Welfare Committee has conducted 40 welfare visits to nursing homes, hospitals, respite centres and private homes, donated MOL memorabilia to eight fundraisers and provided Christmas assistance to approximately 25 families via hampers/shopping vouchers.
If you would like to join the Men of League, or you know of anyone in the rugby league family who may be in need of assistance, please contact Denis Bendall (Secretary Northern Sydney MOL) 0435 057477. You can learn more about our membership packages on the website at
