our home is your castle and you want your castle to be as safe and comfortable as possible for your family. You make sure that you have the best windows, doors, roof and security for your family, but what about the air that you breath in your home? Have you ever considered if you have the best air quality for your families health and safety? Poor Indoor air quality contributes to lung disease, including respiratory tract infections, asthma, and lung cancer, and can greatly exacerbate allergy symptoms. If you or a family member suffers from allergies or asthma, if you have infants or elderly persons living at home, indoor air pollution and its health implications are of even greater concern to you. Poor quality air in your home can contribute to headaches, nausea, sore or scratchy throat, nasal irritation, dry, red, or watering eyes, coughing, and fatigue, all common symptoms we all experience at times. Poor temperature balance and humidity levels can also increase the presence of these pollutants in your home. There could be ‘hidden’ contaminants contributing to poor air quality; such as ground gases seeping into the home. Common household cleaners,

and gases emitted from new furniture or carpeting, room fresheners and scented candles could all be contributing to problems with the air in your home. Of course carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds are dangers that are known to be factors air quality safety. Pollutants aren’t the only contributors to poor IAQ. Today’s energy-efficient homes may be so tightly sealed that it can be like living in a garbage bag! Pollutants build up over time, leading to adverse effects. Air needs to be circulated and purified to create a balanced healthy home environment. So how can you ensure that your homes air quality is the best possible for the health and comfort of your family? If you or your family has suffered from any of the symptoms above, or recognize any of these pollutants in your home, let us help you. Airzone HVAC Services can provide you with a certified IAQ test which will identify problems your home might have with heating/cooling, humidity, carbon dioxide levels, and carbon monoxide. We will then offer you recommendations to address the concerns identified to make your home more comfortable and healthy. Most importantly we will give you peace of mind. 

Nutrition Matters

Food for thought

Understanding the destinction between a Dietician and a Nutritionist

by Trish Massart Credit: www.depositphotos.com Š stockasso

I

am often asked, what is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist? The answer: lots, and at the same time, very little. It really boils down to your own personal philosophy on natural healthcare vs. allopathic healthcare. Holistic Nutritionists are an important part of natural health care, just as dietitians are important to the allopathic model. A Holistic Nutritionist is to a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) as a Dietitian is to a Medical Doctor (MD). Both nutritionists and dietitians have one common objective, which is to assist their clients in achieving their health goals through sound, science-backed, nutritional recommendations. Both practitioners approach

their clients with the utmost professionalism. They are customer-focused, providing education and real-world recommendations on food. Both empower their clients to make food choices that have a positive impact on health. While the goal is common, how these people are educated, regulated and their fundamental approach to achieving that goal differs. There is plenty of misinformation swirling in the market which is making it difficult for people to choose wisely. It is my intention to help clarify some of the key points so that you can make an informed choice — a choice that will ultimately result in a healthier you. The tables below highlight some key differences:

Registered Holistic Nutritionists (Rhn)

Registered Dietitians (RD)

Subjects Studied** Human sciences (anatomy, biology, chemistry, etc.) and nutrition/ food sciences; Research Techniques; The Mind-Body-Spirit connection to wellness; Eco Nutrition, farming practices and food quality (i.e. organics); Diet and Food Trends; Nutritional Pathology; Symptomatology and Preventative Nutrition.

Subjects Studied* Human sciences (anatomy, biology, chemistry, etc.) and nutrition/food sciences; Research Techniques; Food Systems; Disease Management; Communications and Counselling.

Education A 4-yr science degree is advantageous; A 1-yr, condensed, nutrition-focused education; Multiple real client case studies for peer review; A licensing exam administered by the nutrition college; and National associations to empower as well as provide insurance and continuing education opportunities to practitioners.

*according to the Dietitians of Canada Website there are two routes to license: 1) 4-yrs nutritional science degree with integrated residency from accredited university or 2) 4-yrs undergrad in nutritional science plus external residency programs. Source: www.dietitians.ca. **Source: www.csnn.ca

Where these professionals differ greatly is in the hospital setting, such as the ICU or the neonatal unit where tube feeding may be required, as an example. Dietitians are specially trained in these procedures (controlled acts). It is because of these controlled acts, where the potential for harm exists, that dietitians are provincially regulated. This is for obvious public safety reasons. Because there is no risk of harm in anything that a Holistic Nutritionist does within their scope of practice, there is no requirement for government regulation. However, for members, national associations develop and enforce codes of conduct, ethical standards, yearly continuing education requirements and a means by which clients can submit complaints and have them redressed to the professional in question. The word “nutritionist” is in the common vernacular and therefore does not belong to any one profession, just as “Doctor” can

belong to a Chiropractor, a Naturopath, a Homeopath, an Osteopath and a Medical Doctor. A nutritionist can be a registered dietitian or a registered holistic nutritionists (or nutritional consultant, etc.). However, in Alberta, Nova Scotia and Quebec the word “Nutritionist” has been protected by the dietitian regulatory bodies in those provinces, which is causing a great deal of confusion to clients who would typically choose a holistic route to health and healing. There are also plenty of untrained people doling out diet advice, be it your neighbor or the columnist in your community paper/ magazine. Regardless of which route you choose, natural or allopathic, always ensure you are choosing an individual who has been trained, holds a license and is in good standing with their regulatory body or association. These designations should be clearly indicated on their business cards, web sites or within their offices. If you don’t see these, ask for proof of qualifications. To Your Good Health. 

Eatingfrom the Rainbow by Hannah Rauhanen

T

he shift from winter to spring brings more life back into our climate. Spring’s fresh, colourful produce supports our health by nourishing the body at the cellular level. Although we eat differently, it is the body’s natural rhythm to eat in tune with the seasons, following the flow of Mother Nature. As temperatures rise, we should incorporate more colours from the rainbow in our diet and transition away from winter’s heavier warming meals. Eating a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables ensures the body is getting the essential nutrients it needs to function optimally. Fruits and vegetables develop their vibrant colours from a group of plant pigments called flavonoids. Flavonoids support many health conditions with each colour group carrying unique benefits that promote overall health and protect against chronic disease.

Blue + Purple Anthocyanidins are responsible for the blue to purple pigment found in fruits and vegetables such as blackberries, blueberries, eggplant and purple cabbage.

8

Your Health + Fitness Matters

These foods are rich in antioxidants best known for their ability to improve vision and protect against age-related macular degeneration. Eating more blue to purple fruits and vegetables also improves cognitive function, protects cells from oxidative damage, and promotes longevity.

Red Red fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals including anthocyanins and lycopene, the pigment responsible for their colour. These substances can be found in tomatoes, watermelon, raspberries, and strawberries. Incorporate more red fruits and vegetables to reduce the risk of diabetes, improve heart health, repair cell damage, and support cognitive health.

Yellow + Orange Most yellow and orange foods are loaded with carotenoids, which give them their bright, sunny colour. Fruits and vegetables such as oranges, mangos, sweet potatoes, and carrots support collagen production, boost the immune system, promote healthy joints, and decrease the risk of various cancers.

Green Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in plants. Chlorophyll is a powerful flavonoid with the ability to improve liver detoxification, aid tissue healing, restore energy, and support digestion. Green vegetables like kale, parsley, watercress, and sugar snap peas, are abundant with chlorophyll. Eat them raw or lightly cooked to preserve their nutrient content.

White Although not a colour found in the rainbow, white plants promote a wide range of health benefits. Anthoxanthins are the flavonoid responsible for the white, creamy pigments of certain plant foods. These nutrients can increase immunity, lower cholesterol and decrease blood pressure. Eat more white fruits and vegetables, such as onions, garlic, cauliflower and bananas to reap the benefits these plants have to offer. Eating a rainbow of colourful foods provides vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that nourish the body at the cellular level. The full spectrum of pigments provides a variety of nutrients that play an essential role in supporting optimal health and preventing chronic disease.

Physio Matters by Claire Lajeunesse

The

disease

M

odern technology has made our lives easier in many ways, but it has brought multiple problems. Humans, nowadays spend much of their day in a sitting position. According to the 2012 study National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, over 70% of us spend six or more hours sitting each day. Whether we’re sitting at a computer, watching TV, commuting, playing on a video game console or communicating on smart phones, we have become increasingly sedentary. Sedentary behavior is decreased energy expenditure. Put simply, it is physical inactivity. The introduction of habitual physical inactivity into our daily living patterns has increased the risk of at least 35 chronic health conditions. Also, studies suggest that even when adults meet physical activity guidelines, sitting for prolonged periods can still compromise their health. In fact, research tells us the amount of time people spend sitting each day has a bigger impact on their health than the amount of daily exercise. The primary goal of my article is to focus on the impact that sitting has on the human spine. In my physiotherapy

10

Your Health + Fitness Matters

practice, I treat a significant number of people with spinal pain and dysfunction. When patients come in, they usually attribute their problems to bending or twisting of the spine. While twisting or lifting may be the final straw, the underlying cause is often excessive sitting. Spending much of your day in a seated position can leave your spine sore, stiff and in pain. The longer you sit, the more likely you are to slouch. The effects on the spine of extended sitting include: 1. Neck and Shoulder Strain: It is common to hold your head and neck in a forward posture while working on the computer. This strains your neck vertebrae, muscles, ligaments and joints, causing pain to the neck, shoulders and back; 2. Spine Strain: Sitting puts more pressure on spine than standing. Sitting hunched is even worse. Discs are compressed and lose flexibility. Sitting excessively can increase risk of bulging or herniation to disc; 3. Muscle Degeneration: Activity requires muscle activation. When muscles go unused, they become weaker; 4. Impact on Hips: Hips become tight and limited in range of motion due to prolonged flexion position while we sit.

But a few simple things can help reduce the impacts on your spine from sitting: 1. Reduce time spent sitting still by varying postures while sitting and standing up and moving periodically throughout the day. Set up a 30-minute timer as a reminder. 2. Ensure you have proper posture at work by using an ergonomic chair or a sit/stand workstation. 3. Try to active commute. Bike to work if possible. Increase physical activity by taking a lunchtime walk, and use stairs whenever you can.

4. Do these 3 stretches daily: 1. Stand and stretch backwards to reverse to position of the spine; 2. Hip flexor stretch to increase hip mobility; 3. Front plank to help strengthen core muscles. MOVEO MAGAZINE AD(HEALTH+FITNESS_2017).ai 1 2017-09-09 But most of all, just get up and get moving!! 

Hearing Matters

Understanding the role of an

Audiologist by Karine Bossé

A

udiology is a health science and a rehabilitative health care profession. Audiologists study similar University Programs as other professionals we know such as Speech-Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapists. However, their day to day tasks are more like those of an Optometrist. Audiologists evaluate everything related to your ear and your hearing. They gather information, take measurements, counsel, and recommend appropriate rehabilitative treatment plans. There are a variety of solutions available to treat hearing, so the Audiologist is tasked to break that down and recommend the appropriate solutions for you. It takes about 6 years to become an Audiologist, starting with a 4-year undergrad, followed by a 2-3-year Audiology Master’s Degree, which is only offered in five Universities in Canada. Audiologists study topics such as Anatomy, Physiology, Physics, Acoustics and Perceptions of the Auditory System, Rehabilitation, Counselling and

much more! Audiologists in Ontario are regulated under CASLPO (College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario), and are required to keep up to date with the new advances in technology and the current research findings. Some Audiologists also choose to complete a Clinical National Exam, to add to their qualifications.

Karine Bossé, B.A., Psy. &

Why is hearing health so important?

Lin., M.Sc.S., Aud (C)

The general population cares more and more about their health and well-being. When you start to see blurry, you typically call your Optometrist. If you get injured, you may contact your Physiotherapist. People want to address health issues quickly! We have even seen this wave of interest in keeping our brains active by doing sudokus, cross-word puzzles and taking the time to read a book! The question is: why is it that we don’t believe that addressing hearing loss can also help with keeping us healthy, and furthermore, keeping our brain active?

approach with state of the art

J u ly / A u g u s t 2 0 1 8

Karine is a Registered Audiologist who uses a patient-centered equipment to help treat her patients who suffer from hearing difficulties. With a strong focus on hearing health, Karine aims to educate her patients and her community on the challenges of hearing loss and why treating it is so important. Karine’s relaxed approach and strong counselling skills have always been great assets for her patients, along with her ability to relay information, her quick smile and her easy-going personality.

Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent invisible disabilities. Because it usually occurs gradually, people don’t always see it as a major health concern. It is even very common for friends and family to be the first to notice hearing loss in their loved ones. That said, research shows that it takes an average of 7 years for someone to seek help from the time they start experiencing hearing difficulties! This is almost a decade of not hearing sounds and speech properly, which can create elements of stress in the body! Studies have shown that untreated hearing loss can have a negative impact on people such as cause social isolation, frustration, irritability, stress, loneliness, embarrassment, depression and cognitive declined. These findings certainly show that not treating hearing loss can contribute negatively to our overall health and well-being. As for the impact on the brain, when you have hearing loss, the hearing nerve and the brain get less stimulation than they used to. Because of this, they can become weak, just like a muscle would when it doesn’t get enough exercise. This can have an impact on our ability to hear speech sounds clearly. Things become

a bit more distorted than they used to be, which can be harder for the Audiologist treat, even with the use of hearing aids. Essentially, with hearing loss and the brain, the expression “if you don’t use it, you lose it”, can apply! These are some of the reasons why we encourage people to treat their hearing loss sooner rather than later. Studies have even shown that within just 3 months of wearing hearing aids, 90% of people report significant improvements in their quality of life, as well as in their overall well-being. They have even specifically noted improvements in their physical health, cognitive health and self-esteem, as well as a reduction in anxiety, more independence, a better social life, and overall improvements in communications and relationships. There really is no need to put your body through the stress of living with a hearing loss. Do your health and your brain a favour and don’t wait a decade to address your hearing difficulties. Don’t be afraid to take the step today! Your Audiologist will guide you in the right direction to help you find the right solution, and help improve your overall health! 

I grew up in a small village in the north of Iran, near the Caspian Sea. My greatest joy was riding my bicycle every day after school with my best friend, Eli, balanced on my handlebars. We’d travel through the open fields, and into the forest on the edge of village. I’d pedal fast for the thrill of the wind in our faces. We’d often fall in the fields, or on the dirt paths, laughing hysterically at how ridiculous we looked. Exploring the world on my bicycle was my childhood definition of freedom. I was happiest outside in nature -- visiting the trees and feeling the sun on my face. Around the age of eleven everything changed. One day, Eli and I were slowed down behind a group of young male

soccer players who were walking on the path towards the field. I could not keep the bicycle balanced. We both fell off and started laughing at ourselves, at which point an older man approached us and looked Eli in the eye. With a very kind paternal voice, he told her We went home and told our parents, in search of sympathy. Instead, they told us to stop bicycling around, as we needed to begin behaving in a more ‘proper’ and ‘appropriate’ way for women. My bicycle was given to my younger brother and I was left with a yearning for the next 13 years. I threw myself into school, replacing the physical freedom of my bicycle with the freedom found inside books. Reading became my escape. I excelled in school and university. After a lot of hard work, I received a scholarship from Carleton University in 2002 for my Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology. However, the first order of business for me was bicycling.

I got on a bike from the first day I arrived in Ottawa, Canada on July 25th, 2002. Words cannot describe how I felt the moment I got on that bicycle -- what a rush of excitement, freedom, and joy! I was amused by the beautiful pathways, nature and ease of access to everything via bike paths in Ottawa. On the day I was told to stop bicycling, I could never have imagined that one day I would be free to bicycle again in my beautiful home city, Ottawa. I decided to start Escape Bicycle Tours and Rental to share with visitors, tourists, and locals the joy and freedom of bicycling. My parents gave me the gift of bicycling. I only wish I could go cycling with all my family members including my mum and older sister. The society in which we lived did not allow us. In Ottawa, we are fortunate to have hundreds of kilometers of recreational pathways and a unique mix of natural and urban scenes which makes it an attractive and safe cycling city for families. Imagine spending a few hours or a day outdoors with your family enjoying the fresh air and getting to know our beautiful city more intimately. I look forward to seeing many of you cycling out there with your children giving them the gift of freedom, happiness, wellness and health this year! 

effectivelyshift your Fitness

S

ummer is finally here, and with this glorious weather in the Nation’s Capital, we are likely becoming more active and working towards better fitness and health. The most important thing that we can do to get our eager, healthful bodies into better shape, and optimize glowing and radiant health is by staying hydrated. Water is the most important nutrient for our bodies; second to the air we breathe. Our bodies are composed of up to 60 to 70% of water; we as humans can exist a couple weeks without food, but only a couple days without water. It is the one nutrient that will do more for us than any other, in terms of shifting our health, fitness and wellness into high gear. We consume water everyday, it is everywhere, and comes to us in many shapes and forms. It is a shape shifter, a cleanser, and a powerhouse of living life to the fullest.

Functions of Water:  Hydration: maintenance of optimal

levels of water for health.

 Transportation: of oxygen, bodily fluids

and proteins  Temperature regulation: Used to create sweat and lower body temperature  Lubrication: used to create saliva to assist in digestive process of foods  Solvent: used to dissolve solutes such as sodium (salt), glucose (sugar) and potassium in blood. Despite its prevalence, and the prevailing knowledge and research shows that more water (2-3 litres of water or 30 ml of water per kilogram of your bodyweight per day) to stay hydrated, many remain dehydrated. Dehydration is the leading nutritional deficiency in North America. We are commonly deficient in water, despite that many of us carry water bottles with us wherever we go. Simply drinking the recommended amounts of water daily (which is usually geared towards more sedentary living) misses many useful points on how the body utilizes and absorbs water. Water is more rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream from the digestive tract and into your cells with the

aid of various nutrients; many of which are lacking in regular water. Are you a coffee drinker or enjoy the occasional glass of wine? If so, for every eight ounces of dehydrating beverage you drink (coffee, tea, wine, soft drink, fruit juice) you need to hydrate with 12 ounces of water.

Tips to Stay Hydrated Use salt, natural sugars and minerals in combination with the water we drink. Salt: is a powerful nutrient and when its pure and unrefined (Himalayan or Celtic Salt) delivers as many as 92 trace elements and minerals essential for optimal health. Adding salt to your water changes the electrolyte or sticky nature of water, helping it linger in the body’s tissues. This is especially important when engaging in physical activities; when we perspire (sweat); we lose not only water but also electrolytes such as salt. It is imperative to replenish them while supporting rapid water absorption, ensuring proper hydration. Coconut Water: is an electrolyte-enriched liquid that comes from the centre of a coconut. It is abundant with potassium and natural sugars that ensure a thorough hydration of cells. Many of us deplete our potassium

levels with vigorous activities so coconut water is great for after a workout either by drinking it straight or by using it in various shakes or smoothies. Water-rich foods: eating a variety of fresh plantbased foods can also deliver nutrient-rich hydration and can add some great nutrients into a smoothie. Examples of these foods include leafy greens, spinach, celery, asparagus, red leaf lettuce, arugula, kale and more.

Green Smoothie for before or after workout Ingredients: • 1 cup chilled green tea • 1 cup loosely packed well-rinsed of your favourite herb (such as cilantro, basil or parsley) • 1 cup loosely packed leafy greens and reds (spinach, lettuce, kale, etc) • 1, 6” piece of a cucumber • 1 cup strawberries washed and hulled • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 Tbsp of freshly peeled ginger root • ½ avocado Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender and process until smooth. 

Business Matters

Questions

to Ask your Business Coach Credit: depositphotos.com © pressmaster

T

he business coaching process helps business owners clarify and achieve their business goals and align them with their personal goals. But how do you know what to look for in a business coach, who to hire, and what they can help you with? Be open to change and new experiences. Everything will be easier when you let yourself be open. Here’s a list of questions I like potential clients to ask so they can make an informed decision when they’re ready to commit. What is business coaching? Business coaching is about helping clients focus while simultaneously helping them understand what’s holding them back. Coaches help you create a clear action plan and hold you accountable for achieving it. What coach training have you had? There are more than 200 coaching accreditations worldwide. Look for a coach who’s got accreditation from an organization that requires at least 300

18

Your Health + Fitness Matters

hours of coach training. Try to find a coach who’s committed to continuous improvement. What types of businesses do you deal with? What size of businesses do you deal with? Look for someone who understands your challenges, opportunities, and goals for your business. A coach who works with many kinds of businesses may be more of a generalist and better rounded than one who focuses on a single business size or sector. What do you do best? You want a coach that does what you are looking for so listen carefully to this answer. What have you written in your field? Whether it’s a book or a blog, a series of webinars or handouts, a newsletter, Facebook page or web site with useful content, the materials your coach produces will demonstrate their expertise. What other skills besides coaching do you bring to the table?

A coach that has other skills really helps grow your business. A coach with a business background can offer you more than a coach who has never done anything but coach. For instance, I’ve worked

as a sales trainer and am an accredited coaching mentor. What is your return on investment (ROI)? A coach can’t take either credit or blame for your results. But a good business coach plays a role by pointing out both opportunities and obstacles you’re putting in your own path. Helping clients think more clearly is a huge part of the coach’s role. When choosing a coach, you want someone who can point to their clients’ results. When you select the right coach for you and your business, you’ve completed the first step in creating a solid action plan. Do you have any testimonials I can read or listen to? Coaching clients who’ve benefited from business coaching are always happy to let others know who’s helped them along the way. Get in touch if you want to hear my answers to these questions. 

Generosity Matters

The Value of

Generosity by Bhaskar Gosuami

enerosity feels good. To receive spontaneously without asking, to give without being asked, to even witness acts of generosity feels good. This alone might be reason enough to cultivate generosity. If we go a little deeper, we discover that value of generosity can be more subtle, profound and deep reaching. For example, it is impossible to suffer with stress, anxiety, depression or anger, and be generous at the same time. To two cannot co-exist. They are diametrically opposite in experience. Generosity then, becomes an antidote to our personal mental suffering. When we focus our attention on the question, “How can I be more generous in this experience?”, and we practice joyful giving, it has a way of cultivating genuine confidence, easefulness, and an ability to see through our attachments. It reveals a depth of interconnectedness, community and a sense of belonging that nourishes this human experience. After all, we enter this life empty handed, leave this life empty handed, and all we have in the

20

middle are a series of experiences. From this perspective, generosity becomes very valuable for living a truly rich life. This is the calling of our times. We are all aware of the negative impact that the global amplification of stress, fear and greed is having on our planet. It is simply unsustainable. It would not be an overstatement to say that cultivating generosity is no longer a luxury. It has become vital for the survival of the human species. The same mindset that created the suffering, will not get us out of it. Now is the time to create this mindset paradigm shift. Here is the good news: This is so simple, fun and totally doable! With daana, the ancient Sanskrit word for ‘generosity’, we imagine together what it would look like to co-create a practice ground for generosity. To collectively steward an ecosystem where we share our unique gifts, learn, support each other, and together, uplift our human condition. Daana is an invitation to collaborate in this heroic cause of designing thriving societies for generations to follow.

Emotional Matters

Finding

Gratitude

and Why it Matters by David Gilbert

G

ratitude is an emotion we typically don’t pay much attention to in our busy lives. We’re vaguely pleased or feel lucky when things work out well, but that’s about it. Turns out that’s a big mistake. We’re missing out on something really important; and it’s free. Research shows that being consciously mindful of gratitude makes people feel better in every way; physically, mentally and emotionally. Each time we experience gratitude, it reduces stress and inflammation in our entire being, while promoting healthier mind states and immune responses. Why is this so important? The U.S. Center for Disease Control, estimates stress plays a significant role in 90% of all health issues. Our daily lives and memories are filled with scenery of all types. Some attractive, some not so much. Imagine standing on a hill with two choices. We can watch the sunrise or turn the other way and take in the local dump. Either way, we’re standing in the same place, but the views and our reactions to them are very different. The emotion of gratitude changes what we notice about our lives and surroundings. In fact, recent research in major depression has shown just the act of looking for

22

Your Health + Fitness Matters

something to be grateful for has positive benefits; even if patients couldn’t find anything at that moment. Just the attempt, helped change the focus. Try this fascinating little experiment today. For the biggest impact, share the results each day with someone close to you; a partner, friend, family, co-worker. For two weeks, commit yourself to recording at least three things you’ve noticed you’re grateful for each and every day. It doesn’t matter how big or small the experiences they are, as long as you become aware of some feelings of gratitude each time. Nerds like myself can even track the changes in their moods and sense of wellbeing; physically, mentally and emotionally. Simple to use tracking tools will be sent at no charge on request. Sometimes we need something more substantial. Tools such Emotional Freedom Techniques that act like a marriage counsellor between our conscious and subconscious minds. elf-care not selfish at all. When we talk about self-care people often think of it in terms of being “selfish”or “self-centred”. However, nothing could be further from the truth. The intelligent shift in thinking is to a plan of self-care. Those who learn that they must value their own wellbeing are those who will make the effort to put in place the safe guards and healthy boundaries to protect their health on a daily basis. In this high-stress world of busy schedules and demands we need to schedule time in for OURSELVES. Healthcare professionals are making statements that “neglecting your self-care" or not taking enough “me-time” can have harmful long term effects on your health at the physical, emotional and mental levels.

Rideau River

1 Listen to the Experts Mental health experts from the American Holistic Health Association (AHHA) claim that simply incorporating 20 minutes of me-time per day is all it takes to calm down, balance emotions and ward off all sorts of nasty illnesses. 20 minutes is very doable!

2 Self-care has a domino effect Yes, that is CORRECT. Not taking care of ourselves can take a serious emotional toll. In fact mental health experts say “investing in our health and happiness with self-care will actually have a trickle down effect to other parts of our lives—with benefits being seen in our physical health, relationships, goals and giving us more energy to care for others.”

3 Unplug and Explore Nature We all know how we feel when we get amongst the trees out in nature. Hearing the birds, experiencing the stillness, smelling the pine trees (relaxed already I bet). Being one with nature greatly improves our mental and physical health. ISÖ Spa Nature allows so many opportunities to relax whether it be jumping on a paddle board, experiencing yoga outside or treating yourself to a massage or floatation session. Self-care options can be what ever speaks to you. So unplug from your electronics and go on an adventure to the local park, trail or green space. Have a relaxing bath with candles, listen to some relaxing music, spend 20 minutes on a good novel… You really owe it to yourself… and you’ll be helping others in the long run. or Marie-Hélène Fortin, an active lifestyle and a passion for wellness was always front and centre in her life. A dancer and gymnast from a young age, she found herself traveling all across Canada, the United States and Europe performing with the dance troupe Up With People. After moving to Ottawa and reconnecting with the man who would become her life partner, she pursued a career as a successful Fitness Instructor and manager at GoodLife Fitness Centre.
