Detox Matters

Do You DETOX? by Trish Massart

M

y fundamental approach to wellness is to keep things simple and natural and let the body do what it is designed to do. So when spring rolls around and manufacturers or their celebrity endorsers start pushing detox programs as a means to get you beachbody-ready, I kind of lose my mind a little bit. The human body has six primary mechanisms of detoxification, built right in, free of charge. These are:  Skin  Lungs  Liver  Kidneys  Lymphatic System  Colon And if you treat these systems well, there is no need to choke down ill-tasting concoctions nor do you have to shell out for expensive pills. The reality is that your body WANTS to be balanced, healthy and functioning at peak performance. The problem is that we repeatedly do things that make it extremely difficult for this to happen naturally. So, here are my tips to ensure you support these systems and keep your body working as it is meant to.

6

Your Health + Fitness Matters

Skin The skin is a protective wrapper whose primary purpose is to keep pathogens from penetrating into our body. But it also serves to escort pathogens and debris from our body, via sweat. So move and work and sweat, profusely, at least once every day. Exercise is ideal, but even a good sweat in the sauna will do. And be very careful about what you put onto your skin, especially cosmetic creams and lotions, as so many of these are filled with toxins. Our skin is very porous and will suck those chemicals in, leaving the clean-up to our liver and lymphatic system. One of my favourite resources when shopping for beauty products is Paula Begoun’s Beautypedia (www.beautypedia.com).

Lungs As part of the gas exchange that happens during respiration, the lungs expel CO2 and bring in fresh, ideally clean, air. The lungs have a few mechanisms to ensure the air we breathe is clean, but we need to do what we can to minimize this workload. Not smoking and avoiding second-hand smoke

is a huge step in the right direction. Cleaning up your indoor air at the office and at home is also very important. The American Lung Association’s website is chock full of information on the kinds of hidden toxins in our indoor air. Visit www.lung.org. Once you have read this you will soon find yourself shopping for an indoor air purifier.

Liver The liver plays several roles in the body. It is responsible for metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and amino acids, plus vitamins and minerals; its stores certain nutrients like B12, Vitamin A, and glycogen; it synthesizes several factors responsible for clotting, and binding and transporting proteins; it is responsible for the interconversion of sugars; it manufactures and secretes bile; it excretes cholesterol, bile pigments and bile salts and as part of this, it filters our blood, cleansing it of xenobiotics, varied steroids and hormones, and endogenous metabolites. In order to better support our livers ensure you are feeding it quality nutrients, including plenty of purified water, whole foods and as few processed and packaged foods as possible. Notwithstanding the occasional glass of vino, dousing your liver with unnecessary drugs and alcohol puts you at a great disadvantage. Same holds for the overconsumption of sugars, processed foods and rancid fats. Dandelion root tea, among many other herbal teas, is known to support the liver in its production of bile and thereby supports detoxification. A detox aid you can quite literally grow in your yard.

Kidneys Kidneys function in a similar fashion to the liver in so much as they have multiple jobs to perform. The most important involve the filtration of waste products from the blood, the management of blood pressure and the regulation of the body’s blood Ph. Minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium are important to these functions and again watching what you consume is the key to ensuring your kidneys are free to do their job effectively. Consumption of processed and packaged foods adds a huge amount of sodium and can upset this delicate balance. Further, a diet high in sugar taxes the kidneys in their role to maintain the body’s Ph balance. Give your kidneys some love by consuming plenty of purified water and by avoiding high salt and high sugar foods.

The Lymphatic System Lymph is the fluid that circulates throughout the lymphatic system and is an essential part of our immune system. It contains white blood cells that pick up bacteria or other toxins from the body’s cells and bring them to lymph nodes where they are destroyed. The lymph moves around the body by breathing and muscle contraction. The deep breathing that comes with mediation is helpful as is regular exercise and a daily practice of dry brushing.

Colon The role of the colon is relatively simple compared to the organs above, however when not functioning properly it can literally put a stop to the whole natural detoxification process. The primary function of the colon is to absorb water and to remove the indigestible from the body. This includes debris from the liver, insoluble fiber from foods ingested, and millions of spent bacteria. Poor diet and unmanaged stress, as well as certain disease can impede elimination, so take care of your colon. A diet rich in fiber and quality fats, plus drinking plenty of purified water, is important to good colon health. In summary, if you are respecting your body and supporting the systems designed to detoxify the body naturally, you do not need to go on some crazy cleanse or detox program. The most important things you can do include:  Drinking plenty of purified water (add lemon in the morning to kick start your liver and GI). Include herbal teas (such as dandelion root tea) that are known to support liver function.  Eat whole, live and organic foods as much as possible.  Move and sweat daily. Breathe deeply with meditation. Practice dry brushing each morning. Manage stress and work hard to keep symptoms of IBDs under control.  Avoid smoke, sugars, salt and rancid fats, especially those found in packaged or processed foods. Choose cosmetic products that are all-natural. To Your Good Health!  Credit: depositphotos.com © Kassandra2 / belchonock

FITNESS Matters

stronger every day feeling

hen I was young, fitness was not on my agenda and neither was healthy eating. A few years ago, for the first time ever, I joined a gym and I started running. At the same time, I also decided to give boot camp a try. I was in the best shape of my life. However, by doing it all at once, I burnt out and I ended up quitting everything. Years later gave it another try, but when I met my husband, I moved out of town and life just got busy, so I never persevered. So recently, when my best friend Stephanie asked if I would join her for a boot camp as she was getting married and she needed the moral support, how could I say no. She's my best friend and I'd do anything for her and besides when our 6 week program was over, I was able to quit, right? Yeah right... we both signed up and it was one of the best things I ever did. Not only did I get to spend more time with her, but the boot camp also got me back in shape. The highly motivational staff at Stronger Everyday Boot Camp on Bank

Street made it an amazing experience, with meal plans thrown in to teach us how to eat properly without dieting. Don't get me wrong, it's hard and sometimes you think you're just gonna drop down and never get up again but my friend Stephanie and I not only finished our six week program, we signed up for more. Also with the “buddy system” I was supporting my best friend so it worked very well. At last check, Stephanie surpassed losing those extra few pounds and was the most beautiful bride and me, I'm getting back to where I once was without burning out this time and making it a regular routine. So I guess what I am saying is that getting healthier and loosing weight is a process, it is about taking those baby steps and being consistent and disciplined to follow through. Even on those days that I didn't feel like going, I didn't want to let down my friend and most importantly I didn't want to let down myself. It gets easier as we go along. The best part is ... I am getting stronger everyday. 

Sexual Matters

by Tracy Jenks Wilson

Has anyone seen my

libido? /ləˈbēdō/

sexual desire. synonyms: sex drive, sexual appetite; sexual desire, desire, passion, sensuality, sexuality, lust, lustfulness

A

s a sex coach, I work with many individuals and couples feeling broken. They feel they aren’t enough. They feel that if they got back to some ideal body then finally the sexy rainbow would reveal itself and they would be rolling around in a rose-petal-covered pot of gold at the end. They are often feeling low desire and reduced libido. There are many reasons for decreases in libido, but I believe the foundation of desire comes from within, knowing what turns us on, and going there. Before anything else, I suggest that if you are experiencing any sudden physical changes, first go visit your doctor. If you are experiencing erection changes, you absolutely MUST tell your doctor before investigating anything else, because it could be linked to a serious cardiovascular problem, and may be your only sign. As a coach, I use the talk-only coaching process to guide folks toward their sexual goals, addressing concerns. I believe that as long as your sexual expression involves consenting human adults, and you’re not doing any harm, embrace your authentic sexy self and let your freak fly! The key to joy in this life is our willingness to open up, be vulnerable, be authentic, and embrace what we know to be true

10

about what floats our boat. Go there. We often spend so much time worrying about if we’re enough for someone else, that we lose what we feel about ourselves, and also what really turns us on. We worry about if the partner is happy, if they are turned on, if they are experiencing pleasure. We feel that we should be experiencing A or B when C and D happens. Go inward and explore, and embrace what turns you on! Do you know? I believe desire is similar to the fire challenge on Survivor. You know the one? You use flint and steel frustratingly forever to get a spark, add some coconut husk, blow air like crazy to get a little flame, add some little sticks and then some big hard wood (I know…) and YOU HAVE MADE FIRE! When you are detached from your inner turn-ons, it’s like you’re starting every sexual encounter with flint and steel, working frustratingly for just a spark! Imagine if you explored what turned you on, created that spark, had a low fire going, and during your next encounter, just had to throw a few sticks on that pilot light to get things going! Life is a wonderful, short gift. Go inward, find your spark, build on it, and be your best sexy self. It’s already in there, just waiting! 

Vision Matters

by Anny Tenbult

Playing the avoidance game?

T

hose of you who do the vision avoidance game with yourselves – I wish you’d just stop it. Not knowing where you’re going in business is not the path to success. My client – let’s call him Bill – was doing well in his business, but he’d flatlined. You know how you get to a certain level in sports and unless you practice tons or get a trainer or coach you are going to stay the same? Well it’s the same with business. When you plateau, you need someone from the outside to look in, give you a hand, and help you find out what you really need to move to where you want to go next. Bill, he was full of himself. Almost everyone he worked with – including most of his clients – did not enjoy the way he was at work. He was successful because he has an excellent product and good people around him. It took some mindset coaching and work to make his vision clear to himself and his team to really turn things around. By being candid and clear he was able to relate his vision to his team. He may be somewhat arrogant but he knew his team and had picked some great, diverse team players. After Bill learned more about himself through coaching, he started learning about his team members and

began to understand the strengths that would help him with his vision. Everyone is important in the grand scheme of most businesses but there are some natural behaviours and skills you would prefer for certain jobs. He truly took to heart that you must first start with yourself before you can help another well. His vision is front and centre at all times. Bill’s team knows the company vision clearly and is on board in helping him achieve the dream. They are ready, able and willing to do what needs to be done to make the vision a reality. The result is that he has accelerated more in a couple of months than he has in years and everyone is happy. He is more relaxed now than before because the vision is clear. It was Bill’s choice to move, and to change his current way of being. Everyday, I’m humbled by and proud of the people I work with because they are awesome in their willingness to evolve from the everyday to the grand. Avoidance doesn’t help anyone, especially you. Most entrepreneurs are solopreneurs. By not clarifying and articulating your vision you’re doing yourself, the people around you, and those you could help an injustice. The people I work with have chosen to change and grow to be better than they even thought possible. And it all started with their vision. 

Emotional Matters

Is there something you can’t get past or you’re stuck? by David Gilbert

D

o you find certain painful memories or experiences are constantly in the background? Or do important plans somehow just not happen? About 10% of our mental horsepower is logical thinking and planning. The other 90% is the subconscious mind. It contains the invisible programming that tells us how we see the world; and our place in it. Since everyone around you helps implant those core beliefs when you’re young, sometimes it gets messy. Your subconscious mind’s 1st job is to keep you safe the best way it thinks it know how. Most core beliefs are formed long before we have much knowledge. If a young child touches a hot stove, ideally the subconscious says “hot stove hurts. Don’t touch”. Or, it might conclude “kitchen bad place,” and from then on, send stress signals about kitchens. These partially misunderstood core beliefs profoundly affect us. Trying to do anything the subconscious doesn’t feel is safe is a huge uphill battle. It’s determined to keep you from moves it thinks are somehow a risk and it doesn’t hesitate to use every trick. The more stressed you are, the more the subconscious becomes the autopilot. Fortunately, over 400 published studies now show that by using advanced EFT methods, we can start a collaboration between our conscious and subconscious mind; using feelings as language. Every feeling is attached to a belief; either

14

Your Health + Fitness Matters

true, untrue, or partially true. By using specific language, drawings and a series of acupressure points, it’s possible to bring these buried core beliefs one safe piece at a time into the light of day. There to be reassessed and reconsolidated as brand-new programming. We’re reprocessing and replacing the old underlying programs that no longer fit. Every thought, memory or experience, first goes to the amygdala which determines the emotional context; neutral, happy, bad etc. It then passes this on to the rest of the brain. With repeat memories those related to a previous similar one, the amygdala automatically reconsolidates that same emotional charge and passes it on. Using language or drawings, then tapping on various acupressure points, sends an electrical signal to the amygdala along with a chosen memory. The amygdala sees this as a new experience and re-assesses the appropriate emotional response in the here and now. This is repeated until any negative emotional charge around that issue is gone. Allowing the subconscious to step by step choose the memories and feelings to come up, keeps it feeling safe and actively engaged. The goal is not to force belief changes, buts to allow the entire mind and body to collaborate in safely setting us free from the tyranny of old beliefs no longer fitting our current reality. Yours in good emotional health. 

FITNESS Matters

Elevate Your Mood AND Your Heart Rate

go by Chris Reabel

OUTSIDE for a HIKE Credit: depositphotos.com © Maridav

pring is a great time to get outside for a hike and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine that we often lack in our Canadian winters. Studies in Canada have shown that spending time outside contributes to elevating our overall mood and decreases our stress levels, as much as twenty-thousand-dollar salary increase would. Outdoor spaces, especially areas with lots of trees contain electronically charged particles when the air molecules come into contact with sunlight and water. As we engage in outdoor activities such as hiking, we become more alert, gain mental clarity and elevate our mood. Measuring stress hormone behaviours when being active outdoors has showed:  A decrease in cortisol (stress hormone)  Generates higher level of endorphins (feel good hormones)  Increases vitality and performance

16

Your Health + Fitness Matters

 Decreases resting blood pressure  And of course, gives us a natural boost

of Vitamin D levels Find an outdoor area, such as a trail with lots of trees, a park and an area with a tree and a piece of grass that you can use for a warm-up and a cool-down and stretch. In the Ottawa area, some of my favourite places to go are Hogsback Park, NCC trails and Gatineau Park. Prior to any activity, it important to incorporate a proper full-body warm-up. The benefits of warming up are:  Prepares you both mentally and physically for your activity (walking, hiking, running, etc.)  Gradually gets your blood circulating through your body  Increases oxygen flow to your body  Progressively elevates your heart rate  Helps prevent injuries or joint/muscle pain

prior to activities like hiking and running where there may be many variations of terrain (hills, slopes and rocky paths). It is also just important at the end our outdoor activities that we properly recover and stretch. The major benefits of recovery are:

We make a premium line of raw, certified-organic, cold-pressed juice that taste awesome. Plus, we deliver right to your door. Juicehead makes living better easier than ever.

 To release any physical or mental tension associated

with the activity  An opportunity to lengthen our muscles and stretch  To facilitate physical, mental and emotional equilibrium

DRINK BETTER. LIVE LONGER. START TODAY.

 To prevent injuries and muscle soreness

A great way to recover is to decrease the speed/ intensity of your activity followed by some key stretching exercises for the glutes, thighs, hips and ankles. Even a fifteen-minute walk or hike in the woods creates measurable changes in our body’s physiology. Not only does it provide variety in our daily activities and exercise regimes, but it also generates higher levels of those “feel good hormones” we call endorphins. This spring in our Nation’s Capital, find a way to get outside, cherish life’s simple pleasures and elevate your mood and your heart rate. 

Local Food Matters

It’s that time of year!

Farmers’ Markets are here by Malcolm Sinclair-Park

Local Farmers’ Market Celebrating 11 Years in Ottawa Credit: depositphotos.com © boggy22 / nblxer

A

lonely parking lot. Nineteen eager vendors. Would anyone show up to buy their goods? That was the thought that ran through Greer Knox’s mind one Saturday morning almost 11 years ago. Show up they did, slowly at first, but now all 4 of the growing local farmers’ markets are abuzz with activity on Saturday and Sunday mornings all summer long. Over 170 vendors are selling vegetables, plants, maple syrup, cheese and organic meats to loyal Ottawa customers who enjoy the experience of shopping the local farmers’ market. Over the last 70 years we have moved further and further away from a “farm to table” lifestyle. That’s all changing, thanks to the persistent efforts of those who organize and maintain our local farmers’ markets. “There is a huge trend, with millennials and baby boomers, toward eating fresh

18

Your Health + Fitness Matters

food and knowing what they’re eating and where it comes from.” Greer Knox has been passionate about gardening since she was a young girl. While Knox has been a Professor with the Faculty of Education at University of Ottawa for over 30 years, she has always had a desire to be one with the earth’s bountiful harvest. This desire led her and her family to purchase property south of the city and till the soil to put fresh vegetables on the table at home. “Instilling these values is an important part of knowing where our food comes from,” says Knox. Evidently this literal “growing desire” is shared by the local public, with market attendance clearly on the rise. Local products can be found from mid-May to mid-October with some markets having year-round operations. It’s a “growing trend” and that’s definitely something to celebrate. 

HEALTHY for your VACATION by Renu Pillay

vacation can be the most rejuvenating experience in your life. Whether it is just lying on a sunsoaked Caribbean beach, trekking through the rain-forests in the Amazon or bungee jumping in New Zealand, the total experience from planning your trip, through living your dream and then basking in the afterglow, creates good feelings in our bodies that last a lifetime. The whole experience creates images in our mind of radiant health and amazing health benefits on our return. And it is true: travelling provides a myriad of benefits including improved mood, stronger relationships, boosting your immunity, healthier sleep… the list is endless. Planning a vacation is an exciting experience: the anticipation releases all our feel-good hormones and some studies have shown that vacation anticipation

20

Your Health + Fitness Matters

boosts happiness for up to 8 weeks. The key is to plan ahead of time, to anticipate and be prepared for the unexpected, and to seek expert advice, so that when your plane lifts off the runway, you have the widest smile and the biggest party hat on the plane. We have to balance the euphoria of planning that vacation, with a dose of reality. Frequently, many exotic travel destinations require compulsory immunization for certain diseases such as Hepatitis A and B, Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), Typhoid and Malaria. Also, there are medications that travellers need to bring with them, so that they are prepared for the unexpected health challenges that sometimes surface in daily life. Visiting your local pharmacy can be a convenient, one-stop source of information to help you stay healthy for your vacation.

ART Matters

hen I asked that of my elementary students, the answers were invariably, “An artist is someone who draws and paints real pictures”. We clearly had a lot of unlearning to do, because these children grow into adults who are so busy making a living they forget the importance of creating a life. The fact is, we are all artists, uniquely. Consider the mechanic. An engine is a complicated piece of machinery, but a gifted mechanic can make an engine hum. The hairstylist who cuts your hair is an artist, and so is the mother or father who excel in their nurturing roles, or the teacher who has the gift for reaching the students and making learning fun. We are all born with innate talents just

26

Your Health + Fitness Matters

waiting to be expressed. Studies point out the health benefits of practicing an art, no matter how well it is done. The overall point seems to be that if you love doing something, then it is worth pursuing. As a society, we need to expand our understanding of what art is and what artists create. Art is anything that you create from a heart space that brings you joy; it is the thing you love to do when time and money are of no consequence. Be cautioned, though. Being an artist is a risky act. The truth is, not everyone will like your art, but it’s about letting go of the rigidity of walking through life thinking you have to please anyone. The truth is, your life is your canvas and you get to paint it any way you wish.

I had never considered myself an artist, but this journey has given me an expanded view of our creative world and collective responsibility to individually discover and share our innate art. It is time to expand our definition

of what it means to be an artist, and to allow ourselves to create in ways that feel authentic and joyful. In this way, we get to create a colourful life, and not just make a living. 

Dental Matters by Dr. George Paul Greenacre

Super Sexy Smiles

Credit: depositphotos.com © Wavebreakmedia

A

great smile is a beautiful thing to receive from a spouse, a friend or a stranger. In over 30 years of dentistry, we have created thousands of super sexy smiles, and they are still awesomely beautiful smiles to behold. Let’s examine the basics of a super sexy smile. Beautiful Porcelain and the new Ivoclair E-max crowns and porcelain veneers are now the standard of care for the front six teeth or the front eight teeth. These teeth are called the “social six” or the “social eight” depending on how many teeth show up in the breadth of the person’s smile. These materials can be created in many shades of enamel pearly white, and are also good at reflecting natural and artificial light, giving the appearance of a beautiful, natural smile. The key to a super sexy smile is designing the form of the teeth to reflect the form or shape of the face. For example, a man with a wide facial form needs a wide square tooth form so the tooth reflects the face. Conversely, a woman with an oval soft facial form needs an oval-shaped

28

Your Health + Fitness Matters

tooth form for esthetic harmony in the eye of the beholder. It is all in the details! These Ceramic materials are also very durable. A lady dropped in to see us from Vancouver. I didn’t know who she was until she said, “You might not recognize me because I have changed my hair style, and I wanted to tell you that the porcelain crowns you did 20 years ago are still doing their magic for me.” This illustrates the enduring principle that the most cost-effective form of dentistry is quality dentistry that lasts for many years. If you do it well you only need to do it once to last a very long time. When you look at a well-balanced face, you don’t see what makes the face beautiful, but you sense the geometric harmony pleasing your eye. The oval face harmonizes with the oval mouth form and the oval eye form. Then the oval tooth form is the icing on the cake that makes all this facial feminine oval softness come together and WOW! What a smile! When you smile you actually use fewer muscles than when you frown! So Smile more, and frown less! 
