Inspired by his father’s significant role in the dental field, James B. Francis is now the president of Z-Systems, a Swiss dental implant company that offers an aesthetic, healthy and safe alternative for those seeking metal free dental implants and a white alternative for implant dentistry. “My father has worked in the dental field for 30-plus years and his efforts and dedication inspired me to get involved in the field which he loves,” said Francis. “My ultimate goal is to continue to grow our organization and maintain ourselves as the leader in metal free dentistry who can provide products which improve the quality of life for every patient who uses our products.” Born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, Francis earned his bachelor’s degree in management from Northeastern University and opened the first Z-Systems U.S. subsidiary in 2009. His Z-Systems office is currently located in Halifax, Massachusetts which services clients across North America. “All our efforts are aligned to satisfy the needs of our customers and to their success. All products and services offered by Z-Systems are thoroughly tested clinically and are continuously documented scientifically to ensure first-class quality,” Francis said. “The first-class quality offered by Z-Systems creates values—both for the dental medical profession and, as a consequence, also for their patients.” In other highlights, “we continuously offer courses and events for further training to assure the long-term success of our customers

ultimately, Z-systems is considered “the world leader in metal free zirconium dioxide dental implants.” and see ourselves as an independent, objective and trustworthy partner of our customers.” A dental implant acts as the root structure would for a natural tooth. Usually dental implants are made of titanium. The Z-Systems ceramic implant system gives patients the choice between white (ceramic) or grey (titanium.) With six year’s clinical experience—and over 20,000 placed implants—Z-Systems implants have been approved by several safety regulatory agencies across the globe, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Over-dentures are also available.
“The white Zirconia implants do not cause grey shadows, have a high biocompatibility, low plaque adhesion and help promote great soft tissue growth,” Francis explained. “And while some
Dental implants have become the new standard of care for tooth replacement and the Z-Look3 Implant is simpler to place than other types of implants. Z-Look3 Implants have been proven to be natural looking, comfortable, permanent and attractive replacements for natural teeth. They have allowed patients to have teeth without the pain, discomfort and restrictions of dentures and partials. These implant systems are certified and approved, and inserted and provided with restorations exclusively by qualified dentists and dental laboratories. Ultimately, Z-Systems is considered “the world leader in metal free zirconium dioxide dental implants,” Francis said. “Among our world competitors, we are the first who went to the FDA and received approval with our all zirconium dioxide dental implant. We specialize in metal free zirconium dioxide dental implant solutions. We are the only all zirconium dioxide dental implant company who has FDA approval and has an office with support personal in the U.S.”
people show a certain sensitivity regarding metals including allergic reaction, Z-Systems Zirconium Dioxide material has had no reports regarding sensitivity or allergies.” A brilliant smile needs not only white teeth but also attractive, healthy and pink-colored gums, filling the interdental spaces optimally, Francis further emphasized. “To facilitate this, Z-Systems has developed the Z-Look3 implant system. The implants made from the high-performance TZP-A BIO-HIP ® zirconium dioxide ceramic are extremely similar to the condition of real teeth and tooth roots; they are also excellently biologically compatible and are tolerated very well by the gums.” A natural tooth is one piece composed of two parts: the crown and the tooth root. A Z-Look3 Implant is also one piece consisting of a post which is placed into the jaw bone and an abutment which is above the gum line and on which your finished restoration will be placed. There is no micro-gap which eliminates any chance for micro-leakage. The Z-Look3 Implant is placed into your upper or lower jaw bone. After the bone has grown around the implant it can now hold a crown, bridge or over-denture just like roots hold natural teeth in place.

AUGUST 2011
However, the development of crow’s feet is quite low on the list of reasons one should wear sunglasses. The real threat from the sun is from ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and the damage it can cause to eyesight. In a 2006 survey conducted on behalf of Transitions Optical, Inc. about the danger of UVR, 79 percent of Americans were aware of UVR as it relates to skin cancer, but only 6 percent were aware of its danger to the eyes. So what does the “provides 100% UV protection” sticker on sunglasses mean, and why is it important?
RAYS OF SUNSHINE Like visible light, UV radiation is electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun in the form of waves. The invisible UV waves are very short, so they are measured in nanometers (nm). In the UV region of the electromagnetic spectrum, ultraviolet waves occur in the 100 to 400 nm range (visible light occurs in the 400 to 700 range). UV waves can be divided into three wavelength subcategories: UV-A (tanning rays), UV-B (burning rays), and UV-C (dangerous rays similar to X-rays). The UV index is a useful guide for warning the public when they are in jeopardy from the sun. Unfortunately, most people only check the UV index on sunny days when it is highest; but up to 80 percent of UVR can pass through clouds, permitting sunburn and damage to the eyes. The intensity and amount of UV waves able to reach the surface of the earth are affected by the earth’s position. Consequently, the time of day, time of year, latitude and altitude all need to be taken into consideration when assessing the risk of UVR exposure. At noon, when the sun is highest in the sky, UV radiation has the least distance to travel through the atmosphere. As the earth turns, the angle of the sun’s rays changes and the intensity of the rays is diminished. Where the sun strikes the earth is equally important. At the equator, with the sun most directly overhead all the time, the rays are more intense than at the poles, where the rays enter the atmosphere at an angle and have farther to travel to the surface. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports show UVR intensity is 12 to 15 percent higher in the southern hemisphere than the northern hemisphere.
aVoid being outside at the brightest tiMes of the day between 10 a.M. and 2 p.M. Furthermore, the atmosphere’s ozone layer tends to be a barrier to UV-C rays, but at the equator it is quite thin, allowing more UVR penetration. The hole in the ozone layer at the South Pole was a startling discovery because of its repercussions for protection from radiation. At high altitude the atmosphere is thinner too, which allows more UV radiation to reach the surface. According to www.preventblindness.org, UVR intensity increases with altitude by 5 percent for every 1000 feet of elevation and with the degree of reflectivity of the local surface. The rays’ intensity also changes seasonally; UV intensity is highest during the summer months when the earth is tilted toward the sun.
BURNS, BLURRY VISION AND BLINDNESS UV-A and UV-B rays penetrate the skin no matter where or when a person is exposed to UVR. UV-B rays stay pretty shallow, at the epidermis, but experimental studies show UV-B is more damaging, presumably because it has higher energy. UV-A rays pierce into the dermis to subcutaneous layers which contain more sensitive cells and where UV damage and the effects of photo-aging occur. Studies supported by the American Optometric Society show that more than 99 percent of UV radiation is absorbed by the anterior structures of the eye, with some reaching the retina at the back of the eye. The retina uses protective chromophores — rhodopsin, opsin, melanin and A2E — to help absorb damaging rays. The eyes, made of highly oxygenated tissue, are vulnerable to oxidative and photooxidative damage. The cornea is oxygenated through direct contact with the air and the aqueous humor, and the retina’s extensive blood supply, through a network of vessels, provides a high degree of oxygen tension. Although the lens has no direct blood supply it still gets enough oxygen to be damaged by photooxidation. Depending on the wavelength and intensity, UVR has different effects on organisms. At controlled levels, UVR stimulates vitamin D production in the body; UV lamps are even used to treat psoriasis and newborn babies’ jaundice. But radiation can also cause a variety of disorders. A day at the beach or a bright day on the ski slopes without eye protection can lead to conjunctivitis and, in severe cases, photokeratitis.

Inflammation and swelling of the conjunctiva (the membrane covering the inside of the eyelids and the white part of the eyeball) with concurrent watery discharge causes discomfort rather than pain and does not usually affect vision. However, when reflections off snow, water or concrete or exposure to artificial light sources such as tanning beds allow excessive UV-B radiation of the cornea, photokeratitis occurs. This burn to the cornea results in temporary loss of vision. Depending on the source of the UV light causing the injury, it is known as flash burn, ground-glass eye ball, welder's flash or snow blindness. Symptoms include pain, the feeling of sand in the eye and an aversion to bright light.

This condition is reversible, but research has shown that long-term exposure to UV-B can result in corneal degenerative changes such as pterygium (an abnormal, but usually non-cancerous, growth in the corner of the eye). Located on the cornea, pterygium may partially block vision, and requires surgical removal.

The lens has no way to repair itself and no protective coloring; therefore photooxidative damage is cumulative and culminates in age-related cataracts. Cataracts cause clouding of the lens and blurred or murky vision. For 22.3 million Americans who have cataracts, research provided by the EPA reinforces the idea that UV-related cataract cases are avoidable.

SAVE YOUR SIGHT The best way to avoid eye damage from the sun is to decrease UV radiation exposure. Avoid being outside at the brightest times of the day between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when UV radiation peaks. If you must be outdoors, wear protection such as a hat and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen even on cloudy days. Remember — snow, water, sand and pavement reflect UV rays. Sun-resistant fabrics efficiently block UV radiation. Look for hats and sunshades made from these materials. Make sure a wide brim shades your forehead and ears and prevents UV rays from entering from above. The price of sunglasses does not factor into how much protection is provided. Sunglasses should be wrap-around style to prevent UVR exposure from the sides. But no matter what style you choose, make sure the label says it blocks 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Beware of claims that sunglasses block harmful UV without specifying how much. Polarization or photosensitive darkening features are useful to cut glare and allow quick adjustments to changing light conditions but do not, by themselves, provide UV protection. Contact lens wearers can use UV-blocking contacts along with glasses and hats to protect the whole eye.
AN EYE ON THE FUTURE “Half of all blindness is preventable,” says Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness America, the nation’s leading volunteer eye health and safety organization. “That is why it is critical that we take the time to make our vision a priority today to ensure healthy vision in the future.” Prevent Blindness America released a white paper on March 17, 2011 to bring national attention to the need for public education on the damaging effects UV radiation to eyesight. During the discussion in D.C. it was discovered that doctors were aware only of the potential hazards and the health impacts of UVR pertaining to their own specialty. “Those focusing on vision health did not have a thorough understanding of the hazards to the skin, and vice versa.” Therefore, President Barack Obama issued an official presidential proclamation to raise public awareness, declaring March 6 through 12, 2011 as “Save Your Vision Week.” The final step in consolidating effective eye care remains with the medical community. Physicians in all specialties need to be aware that UV radiation damages both the skin and the eyes and regular ophthalmic or optometric visits should be encouraged for preventive care.

HEALTHSPECTRUM POISON IVY
BY
ALICIA DOYLE
poison iVy MANY NATIVE AND EXOTIC PLANTS ARE POISONOUS TO HUMANS IF THE SKIN COMES IN CONTACT WITH CERTAIN PLANT CHEMICALS. HOWEVER, THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS WITH POISONOUS PLANTS ARISE FROM CONTACT WITH THE SAP OIL, ACCORDING TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL. Poison ivy and poison oak release an oil called urushiol. When this oil gets on the skin, an allergic reaction typically occurs, resulting in an itchy, red rash with bumps or blisters. “Many patients do not realize there can be a delay in the presentation of the rash — initial encounters with the plant can take up to two weeks to develop,” said Dr. Payam Abrishami, a board certified dermatologist and board certified dermatopathologist. It’s important to recognize and avoid the plant types endemic to your region, Dr. Abrishami further emphasized. “Wear long trousers and long-sleeved shirts when hiking or clearing bushes and wash clothing in hot water. It is possible to get exposure from the stem of the plants even without contact with the leaves.” One of the biggest myths about poison ivy is, “… scratching poison ivy blisters spreads the poison,” said Dr. Amanda Rosaasen, a primary care provider. “In reality some areas of the skin often come in contact with more poison, resulting in a more severe reaction, giving the appearance that it is spreading.” Jonathan Breslow, an expert in homeopathy and holistic medicine, agreed that “once the rash has appeared, it is a myth that you can spread it, or it is contagious by touching it. The urushiol oil has seeped into the skin and the rash itself is not contagious.”

AUGUST 2011
Dispelling other myths, Breslow added, “If someone's never been exposed to poison ivy before and comes in contact with it for the first time and has no reaction after several days, they should not assume they won't get it, because it can take up to 15 days to develop the rash.” Another misunderstanding about poison ivy is that only contact with the leaves causes the allergic skin reaction. “Not so — any part of the plant can cause the skin reaction,” Breslow said. In fact, “an unwashed jacket that has been exposed to poison ivy or oak isn’t safe to use. Especially in a dry environment, that irritant, urushiol oil on the clothing, can still transmit the allergic skin rash after a year.”

With a history of outdoor activity with exposure to poison ivy, hiking, exposure to dogs that have walked through poison ivy, garden equipment exposed to poison ivy/oak, or being in an area where poison ivy is being burned, visual signs of a red very itchy rash are common within 12 to 72 hours.
A thorough patient history and physical exam is required. Physically, the rash appears similar to other rashes caused by contact, so if the patient has a red/blistering rash and has been in areas that are known to have poison ivy, we are able to diagnose it.
As a dermatologist, I diagnose and treat allergic contact dermatitis induced by the Rheus family of plants, which includes poison ivy and sumac, regularly.
The rash will have small, fluidfilled blisters and may have streaks or lines showing where the actual site of exposure to the plant occurred. The rash is commonly at its worst 4 to 8 days after exposure.
You can diagnose most cases on examination. The linear pattern of fluid-filled bumps is classic. At times, patients can get a generalized id reaction; that's when the rash extends to involve areas that did not come into contact with the plant. Seldom, a small biopsy is needed to help categorize the type of rash. As other rashes such as shingles can appear similar and be mistaken for poison ivy, consult with a physician for accurate diagnosis.

Wash the exposed area with dishwashing soap and water. If the itching feels relieved by cool, wash with cool water. If the itching feels relieved by warm then wash with warm water. All clothing exposed to the poison ivy should be washed in strong detergent. Externally, application of calamine lotion or Rhuligel eases the itching. Other effective external measures include applying a paste made from a mixture of baking soda and oatmeal to the eruptions. Aloe vera gel is a skin-soothing, natural external application. Chinese herbal medicine formulas such as Silerex™ or Xanthium Relieve Surface™, taken internally, have combined natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory effects. The homeopathic medicine Rhus toxicodendron is to be considered when the itching is relieved by warmth and heat and aggravated by cold. Homeopathic Anacardium is to be considered when the itching is relieved by cold and aggravated by heat. In cases of heavily crusted blisters in the bends of elbows that resemble fried chicken, the homeopathic remedy Graphites can work wonders. Internal measures include the use of the antihistamine Benadryl. In more severe cases, intervention with steroids may be needed. Some cases warrant immediate medical or emergency room attention when the following symptoms are present: trouble breathing and swallowing, a rash covering a large part of the body, eyes swelled shut, signs of the reaction spreading into the mouth, and signs of infection including fever with redness and swelling.
02 INTEGRATIVE Generally poison ivy is treated with supportive care. There is no medication to reverse or get rid of the problems, so we have to treat the symptoms. The main symptom is itching, which can be treated with oatmeal baths, calamine lotion, and/or oral antihistamines. In rare cases, more medical treatment may be needed. Some individuals may have a severe allergic reaction and need life-sustaining measures. If the poison ivy plant is burning and the smoke is inhaled or the plant is somehow eaten, a patient can also become very ill.

DESPERATE AFTER SIX MONTHS OF A FAILED SEARCH TO CURE HER 18-MONTH-OLD SON’S EAR INFECTION, WHICH LED TO HIS INABILITY TO KEEP HIS ANTIBIOTICS DOWN, HARMONY GAVE UP ON HIS DOCTOR.
Her next attempt was to consult with Dr. James J. Berryhill, ND, PhD, a prominent naturopath trained at the U.S. School of Naturopathy, who told her about ear candling. Her first response to this was a disenchanted, “Okay, great — thanks,” as she headed for the door. Harmony, better known today as Doc Harmony, was straight out of corporate America at the time. Berryhill’s answer didn’t sound logical and she didn’t believe ear candling could work, but she was at the breaking point — and her son was declining quickly. So in spite of strong protests from her family and a husband assuring her it wasn’t going to work, she recalled lamenting, “I’m sure it won’t work.” But candling was the last resort for her helpless, crying baby. She explained, “I put on the mermaid movie, gave him a lollypop,” she paused to apologize — “I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to give them sugar at the time — and after two minutes with candling, he sat there still the whole time. I did four candles — and he was never sick again — never!” she emphasized.
HOLISTIC HEALTH METHODS MALIGNED Holistic health practices are misconstrued and typically maligned by many in the medical profession and by others who prefer to place their faith with modern medicine. But after having positive personal experiences with these same practices, people tell story after story of success (known as anecdotal evidence). Ear candling is no exception.
the truth about ear candling, said harmony, is “candling doesn’t remove anything from your ear. your body simply goes into a relaxed wakefulness” which gives it the natural ability to heal itself. EAR CANDLING MISREPRESENTED The practice of ear candling is fraught with misinformation and misconception, according to Harmony, who has since earned her Doctorate of Philosophy of natural health from Clayton College of Natural Health. For starters, “Everyone believes it’s an ancient technique — it’s not true.” She points to undocumented stories, generated in the last 20 years and widely available on the Internet. For one, Biosun claims candling is a Hopi tradition, but the Hopis have denied this falsehood in writing, requesting that it be stopped.
Another story references a picture on an Egyptian wall of a princess who is said to be using ear candling. Harmony faxed the photo to several departments of archeology in Egypt to determine the story’s validity. She says, “An elderly gentleman called me back to say, ‘This is only hysterical to us — unless it’s still buried, I promise you there is nothing like this in Egypt.’”
THE TRUTH ABOUT EAR CANDLING Doc Harmony, through a series of events and encouraged by Dr. Berryhill, decided to begin handcrafting ear candles in 1992. She has since traveled the world introducing Harmony Cones through more than 15 trade shows a year and has personally candled more than 10,000 people. Regarding the origin of ear candling, Harmony says, “Different quadrants of the world started using ear candling roughly a few hundred years ago and it evolved and spread because the tradition came with them as they traveled and relocated.” Homemade candles have been made from materials ranging from corn husks to cheesecloth. In Mexico, they used newspaper, which Harmony considers quite dangerous. The truth about ear candling, said Harmony, is “candling doesn’t remove anything from your ear. Your body simply goes into a relaxed wakefulness” which gives it the natural ability to heal itself. Candling does not relieve TMJ, clarify your blood, reduce or remove excessive wax or cure tinnitus, as claimed by various proponents. Harmony clarifies with an analogy: “If I go into the sun, everything will open up and relax.” And it’s the same for focused sessions of deep breathing, sitting in a sauna or getting a massage — you experience a relaxed sensation. “It doesn’t mean the tool is a medical device — it means the person is in a relaxed state where they can heal.” The number one response Harmony hears after candling people is, “I feel so open — so clear.” Ear candling simply provides a way to relieve the stress and tension which interfere with our body’s natural healing process.

CLINICAL STUDIES OF EAR CANDLING Ear candling’s effectiveness has been demonstrated by three German clinical studies. One showed a 98 percent efficacy rate when applied for ear infections. A second determined ear candling works by measurably increasing the alpha performance of the brain and peripheral blood circulation resulting in less stress and increased well-being. A third study found that acute complaints decreased or disappeared and chronic conditions became milder in intensity with ear can-
dling for subjects hospitalized with colds and their secondary effects, headaches, earaches and stress symptoms.

In February, 2010, the FDA sent 17 different letters to ear candle manufacturers requiring them to change their marketing practices. Simultaneously they classified ear candles as medical devices and declined to approve them as medical devices. As explained in last month’s issue, the FDA’s objections relate to the improper use of ear candles which has caused serious injury in 14 instances. They are opposed to unsupported claims of product benefits and the promotion of candling infants and children. The FDA found no valid scientific evidence to support the safety or effectiveness of these devices.
INDUSTRY RESPONSE Harmony Cone has an open lawsuit with the FDA claiming that they are violating people’s
As with many other products and services, misinformation spread rampantly can ruin an otherwise valuable industry. Harmony lamented, “Here’s a great little product … but the lack of proper education and poor selection of raw materials makes things challenging. So many people are giving such bad information about candling.”
HARMONY CONE IMPROVEMENTS A manufacturer should never produce candles made with 100 percent beeswax even if they can be called organic. Beeswax has an extremely high oil content. This means it drips more, making it more likely that hot wax can drip down the shaft of the candle resulting in injury. Harmony Cone offers candles with no beeswax using the highest quality food grade wax. Their beeswax candles are mixed with a high grade of wax that never drips. They are the safest, cleanest burning candle on the market. The company creates the only candle in the U.S. with a burn line label and directions to ensure consumer safety. Theirs are also the only candles with a patented safety tip designed to protect consumers and perfect the action of the candle. Further, their manufacturing processes, which ensure accountability of raw materials from the point of production to the consumers’ hands, are implemented by a former FDA agent. Harmony explains that many candles are produced in China to reduce the cost of manufacturing. She says, “A product manufactured in this way is not going to perform the same way as one produced with quality in mind. You can spend three times as much for a good grade of wax, and it’s not an ingredient one should cut corners on.” Having candled more than 10,000 people, many of them in very distracting, trade show environments, Harmony never had an injury or drip occur. Proper use is important and must be explained on the package. “When you first light the candle,” Harmony explains, “you hold it away from the person’s ear.” She also said, “You can’t ear candle yourself. It’s too relaxing. At a trade show with 20,000 attendees, the people I candle still fall asleep on the table.” You also can’t hold the candle at a 45 degree angle to divert dripping wax from the ear. Harmony explained that the angle of the candle must follow the angle of the ear canal and

There is a serious dilemma between the FDA and natural remedies, and according to Harmony, ear candling represents the tip of the iceberg. When the ear candling letters were issued, Harmony knew there had to be a competing medical product on the market the FDA was trying to protect. Sure enough, on that same day the FDA approved marketing plans for Prevenar 13, a pediatric vaccine Pfizer produced to prevent invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) which can cause ear infections, meningitis and pneumonia. The very next month, Japan temporarily suspended Prevenar after four children receiving the vaccine died a day after being immunized. Three babies in the Netherlands had also died late in 2009 after receiving Prevnar, and in 2008 a baby in India died after receiving an earlier version. There is currently extreme controversy over Prevenar and many other vaccines. Prevenar is still available in 11 countries (down from approximately 70). Today it is available in the Netherlands but not in Japan or India. A government vaccine adverse event reporting system (VAERS), cosponsored by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the FDA, collects voluntary
reports about adverse events following a vaccination. According to www.flutreatments.com, VAERS reported 28,317 adverse reactions to Prevenar since its approval in 2000, including 558 deaths, 555 life threatening conditions, 238 permanent disabilities, 2584 hospitalizations and 101 prolonged hospitalizations. These cases neither indicate nor rule out a causal relationship. In contrast to these huge numbers, the FDA sites a survey published in 1996 by the medical journal Laryngoscope, reporting 13 cases of burns of the ear, seven cases of ear canal blockage with wax and one case of a punctured eardrum. Yet they took action to inhibit the use of ear candles while giving Prevenar free reign. These and many other examples call into question whether the FDA and the medical industry are motivated to construct a case against holistic, natural remedies in favor of medicine and pharmaceuticals, even when evidence shows the former to be safe, valid alternatives to promote health. Most people prefer the facts and the valid pros and cons of a treatment so they can make intelligent, informed decisions on which health method to choose, similarly to the way we have presented ear candling with this twopart article. Decisions that affect our health are personal, and a significant portion of the outcome of any treatment is the recipient’s confidence in the chosen method. Our government should protect us from instances when our lives or our health are truly in danger.

THERE IS A SPECIAL PLACE WHERE courage has many faces, where perseverance has a first name, where dreams are nourished and heroes have a home. It’s called The Challenged Athletes Foundation. “It is our mission to provide opportunities and support to people with physical disabilities so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics,” said Virginia Tinley, executive director of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). “We believe involvement in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence and enhances quality of life.”

Headquartered in San Diego with chapters in Florida and New York, CAF grew out of a desire to assist one physically-challenged athlete, Jim MacLaren, who suffered a devastating accident while competing in a triathlon. His friends quickly decided to raise funds for his recovery, and organized the first San Diego Triathlon Challenge, an annual fundraising triathlon event at La Jolla Cove. From this modest beginning arose a more important mission: to make sure people with physical challenges have the same freedom to enjoy sports as everyone else.

“CAF has raised more than $30 million — enabling the foundation to satisfy more than 5,000 funding requests from challenged athletes in all 50 states and dozens of countries,” Tinley said.
At the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, China, 46 of the participating U.S. athletes were supported by CAF and at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, more than 20 of the participating U.S. athletes were supported by CAF.
“More than eighty cents of every dollar raised by CAF provides funding, special events and programs that get challenged athletes into the game,” she added. “Whether it’s a $2,500 hand cycle, helping underwrite an Ossur carbon fiber running foot not covered by insurance, or arranging enthusiastic encouragement from a mentor who has triumphed over a similar injury, CAF’s mission is clear: give those with the desire to live active, competitive lifestyles every opportunity to participate in the sports they love.” According to U.S. Paralympics, 21 million individuals are living with a disability in the United States today. “Only one in 10 takes part in fitness activities on a daily basis. Beyond adaptive equipment — like sports chairs, mono skis and sports prosthetics — competition expenses can make moving to the next level of athletic performance an insurmountable barrier for many challenged athletes. “Funding provided by CAF helps make it possible for more physicallychallenged people to gain access to this equipment and to the self-esteem that comes from participation in sports,” Tinley said. “To ensure these needs are met in perpetuity, CAF has worked hard over its first decade to build and grow an endowment fund that will continue to assist physically-challenged athletes indefinitely.”
“Sadly, despite our best efforts, many still remain on the sidelines,” Tinley said. “It is only through the hard work of our fundraisers, the generosity of our donors and the assistance of our corporate sponsors that CAF is able to continue fulfilling its unique mission. Their contributions give ever-growing numbers of physically-challenged athletes a fair chance to realize their dreams.” Each spring, CAF distributes direct financial support for training, competition and equipment through the Access for Athletes program. More than 5,000 stipends given under the program to date have assisted a broad range of individuals, from worldclass athletes competing on an international level, to those who are recently disabled and simply desire to become more active. Additionally, through CAF’s Catch a Rising Star, Operation Rebound, and outreach efforts, another 65,000 individuals are touched each year. theta heaLing: ENERGY

ALICIA DOYLE
Described as a spiritually-based energy healing technology, ThetaHealing is considered a powerful yet simple method that is all about connecting with a higher power to co-create wellness. “Energy healing is based on the principle that our state of well-being is affected by subtle changes in our body's energetic system,” said Barbara E. Savin, an energy healing specialist and medical and clinical hypnotherapist at the California Health & Longevity Institute located at The Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village.
36 | yhcMAGAZINE.COM
AUGUST 2011
When our energy is blocked or unbalanced, it can cause illness, depression, distorted perceptions and repressed emotions, Savin continued. “Clearing blocked energy restores natural energy flow, resulting in feelings of peace and harmony. When our energy flows freely throughout the body we enjoy vibrant health and vitality.” The goal of energy healing is to discover the possible causes of blockages, recognize the patterns they create in your life, and then allow yourself to let go of the root cause. “This allows the body, mind and spirit to regain their natural balance and wellness,” Savin said. “As a result you feel clear, centered, and light-hearted and enjoy a renewed sense of purpose and focus. The possibilities for improving your life in this way are endless.” Energy healing is not a substitute for treatment by a doctor or traditional medicine, she further emphasized. “If you have a health condition and want to treat it with energy healing, it is recommended that you do so with the agreement/awareness of a knowledgeable physician, psychologist or other healthcare professional.”
“The practitioner, beginning at the client's head, places his or her hands on more than 20 energy centers of the body,” Savin said. “This promotes proper flow of the body's energy and helps to unblock energy centers that may be congested.”
A hands-on modality, energy healing is very relaxing, Savin added. “This powerful technique relieves stress, creates balance and harmony, and helps speed recovery time from trauma or injuries. Energy healing treats the whole person — the body, mind and the spirit — in order to help stimulate the healing process. A treatment can last up to an hour or more, creating inner peace and total relaxation.”
THE BENEFITS Energy healing works on a wide array of conditions and produces long-lasting results, Savin said. In
“energy heaLing is a
gateway for physiCaL, MentaL, eMotionaL and spirituaL heaLing.” numerous ways, this modality is useful for treating sports injuries, effective for pain management, and reduces trauma from surgery with less bleeding and pain, resulting in quicker recovery. It promotes healing, eliminates toxins and helps to release daily stress. It also helps restore the body’s balance and depleted energy, and creates inner harmony and awareness. Considered an intelligent energy that goes where the body needs it, energy healing allows you to take responsibility for your own healing and begins to flow whenever you need it. This often results in calmness and serenity, and minimizes the feeling of helplessness when faced with a crisis. It also helps promote love, affection, understanding, compassion and trust from within. “Energy healing promotes self-awareness so you can change your life for the better,” Savin said. “It allows the body to experience total peace and relaxation.”
HOW DOES IT WORK? Imagine being able to use the power of your mind for the purpose of healing with divine energy just by asking. Energy healing does just that. “The healer expresses an intention to channel divine energy, which activates when the healer's hands are placed on the recipient,” Savin explained. “The healer then expresses the intention to move ki (vital life force) energy when scanning and sweeping the aura. This process enables the healing energy to dissolve congestion, cleanse, and then energize the diseased area. Most importantly, it clears the way for healing to be more effective, allowing the body's energy to flow freely through the chakras so the body is able to heal.” As a result, “the client feels calm, balanced and grounded after a session.”

Unlike massage, the client is fully dressed. “The client expresses their reason for having the treatment such as stress reduction, pain alleviation, etc., Savin explained. The individual lies comfortably on a table or sits in a chair while soft music plays in the background. “The practitioner, beginning at the client's head, places his or her hands on more than 20 energy centers of the body, Savin said. “This promotes proper flow of the body's energy and helps to unblock energy centers that may be congested. During the session the patient is awake but at times may become so relaxed that they fall asleep. After the treatment is finished the practitioner discusses what the client may be experiencing. “Benefits are usually felt immediately, or may take a few days. Individual results vary, Savin said. “Treatment time may vary depending upon the individual and the problems being addressed. The end result is total inner peace and relaxation. While ThetaHealing may sound similar to a practice called Reiki, there are subtle differences between the two modalities. A Reiki treatment, which involves a series of hand positions on or above the body by a Reiki practitioner, is designed to create positive energy flow to bring about healing. Reiki can also incorporate the use of symbols to direct energy into the body to shift. ThetaHealing, which works on both the physical and emotional level, uses the Theta brain wave and our connection to a higher power to promote healing in the body. “What makes Reiki different from other healing modalities is that [Reiki energy] is divinely or spiritually guided through the practitioner due to the attunement process handed down from Reiki Master to student, explained Shannon Sosebee, a Karuna Reiki Master teacher. “It is this lineage that makes Reiki the healing modality that it is recognized as.

HEALING FOR EVERYONE Energy healing facilitates healing in a variety of circumstances. “It recognizes the universal life force energy and uses it to promote balance and total health, Savin said. “Energy healing is a gateway for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing. The goal is to discover the limitation causing the blockage, recognize its pattern and source, then release it. “Letting go allows the body, mind and spirit to heal, Savin said. “Once you understand and release your limitations, the growth and healing process is set in motion. Life begins unfolding in a way as never before. Anyone with a deep desire to heal will truly benefit from this therapeutic modality.
the goal is to discover the limitation causing the blockage, recognize its pattern and source, then release it. Energy healing is particularly useful for doctors, nurses, psychologists, therapists, and anyone wishing to bring a gentle touch and deeper caring into their healing practices. “Patients in intensive care units or in any hospital environment can benefit greatly from energy healing, especially when human contact is important so that the patients feel connected to and comforted by a caring person,” Savin said. “Babies, small children and even animals are especially receptive to this energy since they are so open to receiving its loving touch.” The elderly and sick can benefit greatly from energy healing on many levels. “Our society is structured so that many older citizens find themselves on their own, whether through the breakup of their family structure, death of a partner, having no children to assist them, or other reasons,” Savin said. “Many live alone, far from relatives, or in homes and communities for the elderly. As a result of being alone much of the time, they often experience feelings of depression, disorientation, loneliness and lack of self-worth. When the enjoyment of life diminishes, they tend to get sick and frequently become bed-ridden. Replenishing life force energy with energy healing can help these individuals heal emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually, making them better able to cope with their situation and live a better quality of life.” Energy healing can be especially helpful with death and the process of dying. “In death, we leave the physical plane and our immortal essence, our soul, moves on to the next realm in its process of spiritual development,” Savin said. “Energy healing can provide support and make the death transition easier for the person who is dying. You can hold the dying person's hand and treat him or her with energy healing, thus making the person feel protected and more accepting and understanding of the process they are going through. It helps them to feel calmer and at peace, allowing them to transition easier and more peacefully.” Ultimately, “energy healing is for everyone,” Savin said. “It is about healing the body, mind and the spirit.”

AUGUST 2011
Often in our busy schedules we can carve out time for walks with our dog during the day. This is a wonderful opportunity to recharge and benefit both of you. Your dog can burn off energy, gain some cardiovascular fitness benefits and maintain a healthy weight, and you can too!
OFF TO A GOOD START Many folks ask when they can start running or doing sustained activity with their puppy. First and foremost, you have to consider where you take your new puppy before it reaches 4 to 5 months of age. Although socialization is a key element in a puppy’s growth and development, you must avoid parks, the beach and green belts where your puppy could be exposed to potentially deadly diseases such as distemper and parvo virus. You can look for a puppy kindergarten class for socialization and basic manners. These classes allow puppies to socialize in a safe environment before they receive all their vaccinations.
a very important reason to avoid running with your puppy early in its life is that canines go through significant developmental changes during the first 14 months of life.
A very important reason to avoid running with your puppy early in its life is that canines go through significant developmental changes during the first 14 months of life. Throughout this period, their growth plates are closing and are vulnerable to the concussive effects of sustained running and jumping higher than your wrist height. Growth plates are located at each end of bones — they are the areas where bones actually lengthen. These areas are the most vulnerable to injury until they calcify when growth is complete. Until then, the plates are soft, and fractures or repetitive micro-trauma to the area can lead to arthritis later in life. Injury to this vulnerable area can also cause premature closure of the growth plate, ultimately leading to discrepancies in bone length and deformity or deviation from normal conformation (proportionate dimensions). A rule of thumb is that the larger the dog, the later in the 14-month window the growth plates will close, and the more susceptible to injury he or she can be. It is best to stick with walking, progressing to a brisk walk, as a puppy reaches maturity.
SO, WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY PUPPY? In lieu of sustained running, consider low-impact exercise and lots of play on grass such as retrieving and working with basic behavior skills such as “stay,” “down,” and “come” when on a long lead. Once a dog has reached 14 months, you may start with 20 minutes of brisk walking and progressively incorporate some jogging intervals. The dog should be at your side with a slow trot. Swimming is also a fabulous lowimpact exercise. If your dog is older than 14 months, start out with progressively longer walks to begin conditioning. Be sure to work on heeling your dog so he learns to stay at your side with his front feet even with yours (I know this can be challenging for some). Be sure to stop and reward him when he looks up at you while walking at your side. Stop when he gets ahead of you and wait until he comes back. Make him sit before proceeding. He will finally get it when he realizes that pulling and moving ahead stops all the fun. You can use a head harness such as the Gentle Leader. Dogs tend not to pull as much with this system as it turns their head. There is also a leash called the Buddy System that latches to your waste.
It is best not to feed your dog a meal for two to three hours before running. Small treats are okay. Start with your regular walk and then incorporate periods of jogging. As your dog gets better at staying at your side, you can jog for longer periods.
SAFETY TIPS FOR HANDLING I am not a fan of running beside roads with dogs, as they can pull you down if they spot an unexpected rabbit or squirrel. If you choose to do so with your dog leashed, run facing traffic with your dog on the left. That way you can more easily anticipate any trouble ahead. Remember to keep your dog hydrated and watch for signs of overheating. Dogs perspire through panting. When he pants with his tongue just out of his mouth and looks comfortable, keep going. When you notice his tongue hanging out and curling into a spade shape with mouth commissures (the corners of his mouth) pulled back fully, you have exhausted all his cooling options and you need to give him a break until he starts to breathe more normally. Lagging behind and obviously trying to stop are signs he is uncomfortable. And especially if he lies down when you are done, you need to scale back your efforts. Many working dogs such as Labrador retrievers and German shepherds will do whatever you ask of them, so you have to be their advocate and know when to stop. They will exercise to the point of exhaustion if we let them!

You know the old saying, “Food is love.” Well, we love to give our dogs treats. There are aisles of treats dedicated to people who love to feed their pet’s enthusiasm. But it is our job to make sure that our pets do not overindulge.

Keeping your pet at a healthy weight will also delay the onset of arthritis. If your dog is overweight, consider swimming and underwater treadmill therapy as this allows the cardiovascular benefits of exercise without the concussive effects of gravity and weight. Walking on grass is also beneficial as it has less impact than pavement. Be sure to give your pet fish oil, chondroitin and glucosamine as these are all naturally antiinflammatory and they help delay the effect of arthritis and wear and tear on the joints. Chiropractic care is also important to keep a healthy spine and improve mobility. Overweight dogs or those with hip or knee issues place extra stress on the spine and should be evaluated and treated.
THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE Have fun! Dogs are furry exercise machines that give back way more than any piece of fancy exercise equipment or gym membership. It’s all about the bond you build on those long walks and runs. What grows in that peaceful time is one of the most Zen-producing, centering experiences you will ever have. Don’t forget to stop and sniff the roses and a few fire hydrants along the way.

FITNESS&NUTRITION I OUTDOOR WORKOUTS

aLternatiVe outdoor workouts THE GREAT OUTDOORS BECKONS. WITH WARM AND PLEASANT TEMPERATURES, NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO EXPERIMENT AND GO BEYOND YOUR COMFORT ZONE OR ESCAPE THE DREAD OF THE TREADMILL.
ON THE BEACH Just south of the Santa Monica Pier, every Sunday at 11 a.m., is a year-round beach workout called The Sandbox. The hour-long, non-traditional workout incorporates functional movements and gymnastics-based exercises using sand bags, fire hoses, balls, buckets and other practical items you would otherwise not see inside a gym. Sam Martin, a certified trainer with CrossFit LA in Santa Monica, leads the pay-as-you-go and donation-based workout. Martin suggests a $10 donation but it is not required to attend any of the workouts.
44 | yhcMAGAZINE.COM
AUGUST 2011
“It’s more like a play date than a training session,” said Martin, who recently asked an assembled group of about 14 people to play a game of football on the sand as a warm-up exercise. Sometimes it’s dodge ball or tag. There are prizes at the end of the session. “I still expect attendees to work hard but there’s no strict routine or drill sergeant-type yelling,” added Martin, a recent transplant from Michigan. Come in your usual workout attire. Bring sunscreen and a water bottle.
ON THE WATER If you’re more of a water than a sand type, try rowing or stand-up paddle boarding. At scenic Lake Casitas off the 33 freeway toward Ojai, a rowing team meets most Saturdays and Sundays of the year. Open to 8th graders and up, Lake Casitas Rowing Association has a number of teams and fitness levels that train year-round. “The only requirement is that they need to know how to swim, just for safety reasons,” said Wendy Gillett, one of the coaches. “It’s a very challenging workout because it works every muscle and it’s mentally challenging as well,” said Gillett, who co-founded the group with her husband Eric in 2008. The association is currently 110 members strong and competes in various divisions and events throughout California. There are several free learn-to-row events during the year. Most of the equipment is provided. Also on the water is stand-up paddle boarding or SUP for short, right here in Ventura County. SUP recently started to gain worldwide recognition from acclaimed big wave surfer Laird Hamilton who became a student and a proponent of the sport in the late 1990s. This traditional, year-round Hawaiian sport is open to everyone from 8 years old (accompanied by an adult) to 80. The total body workout promotes balance, strength and fitness. “Swimming and surfing abilities can be helpful but are not required,” said Shaun Patterson, owner of Ventura County Stand-up Paddle Board School. A surfer all his life, Patterson teaches SUP most days of the week to individuals and groups. He starts the two-hour lesson with ground instruction on the beach by Ventura Harbor. Paddles, wetsuits and boards are provided, with the size of the board dependent on a person’s height and weight.
ON WHEELS If dry land is more your cup of tea, how about roller derby for an intense outdoor workout? If you’re a female of at least 18 with basic skating skills, the Ventura County Derby Darlins (VCDD) might be for you. The team meets year-round at the Freedom Park rink in Camarillo for two-hour long practices a few nights a week. “Just like most workouts, we warm up, stretch, work on our endurance, speed and agility,” said coach Renee Rakestraw. The team is on the road to compete once or twice a month and travels anywhere from San Diego to Santa Maria. The All-American contact sport may not be for everyone, but Rakestraw was quick to correct some stereotypes. “Most of us are professionals with real jobs during the day and we’re not all fierce and scary,” said Rakestraw, a schoolteacher who started as a B team player in 2009 before being promoted to coach.
“the body goes through dynamic changes during pregnancy so it’s perfect for recovering one’s core and pre-baby body.”
VCDD has four teams: A, B, cadets and newbies. As a nonprofit organization, the cost to sign up is minimal, but expect to make a substantial, one-time investment for the cost of skates, helmets, mouth guard and other essentials. Another workout on wheels is Stroller Strides, typically for moms and babies, but dads are welcome too. Workouts include power walking or jogging between strength and cardio interval stations, utilizing the outdoor environment and resistance tubes provided. The group meets at three l ocal parks year-round or heads to The Oaks Mall during inclement weather. “It’s a practical strength training for what we moms do in real life, which is juggling children in our arms, while carrying bags and balancing,” said Julie Patchis, owner and instructor of Stroller Strides in the Conejo Valley.
Patchis, a working mom with two children of her own, signed up to do Stroller Strides throughout her entire second pregnancy. All classes are designed to cater to various fitness levels, including athletes and all stages of pregnancy and post-natal recovery. “The body goes through dynamic changes during pregnancy so it’s perfect for recovering one’s core and pre-baby body,” said Patchis, who

decorated Marine Corps veteran who teaches 10 classes a week. Back after two combat tours in the Middle East, Juarez decided to pursue personal training certification. “As someone who has been through a real boot camp, I know how to teach one,” said Juarez. Located in Westlake Village, Juarez takes his boot camp outdoors to local parks or nearby beaches most Saturdays. This summer he hopes to add more outdoor classes. Juarez keeps his classes interesting by making them not only fun, but also unpredictable. “I like to keep my students motivated and guessing on what I’m going to make them do next,” he said.
For something a little more intense, try joining a running club. 101 Running Tribe meets three times a week for track, tempo and trail workouts. Juarez, who also offers personal training sessions, uses a variety of exercise equipment including kettle bells, punching bags, medicine balls and resistance bands. He has been known to add interval workouts, making students do sprints, climb stairs or just use their own bodies for strength training.
UP, UP AND AWAY
Led by former Olympic hopeful Josh Spiker, the club has different levels of workouts and pace groups. “It’s a lifestyle and a way to make friends too,” said Spiker who has been running since he was 6 years old.
If the fear of heights is not an issue, how about rock climbing or the trapeze for your next outdoor workout? There are no basic requirements or specific body types for rock climbing according to Dave Sisolak, an instructor at Boulderdash, the rock climbing facility in Westlake.
The club holds various social events, running clinics and short distance races throughout the year. Soon they will also organize group travel to races such as the Rock ’n Roll Las Vegas Marathon and Half-Marathon this December.
“It all comes down to an awareness of your body and how you are able to move and transfer your weight back and forth over the rock climbing surface,” said Sisolak, who has been climbing for at least 12 years.
If you are looking for a mix of running, strength training and even boxing, Miguel’s Boot Camp might be the perfect fit. This “boot camp is like no other,” according to Miguel Juarez, a
The mental challenge of rock climbing draws people of all ages from all walks of life and with various goals in mind. “I’ve taught people who just want to take it outdoors to a man who wants to trek in Nepal,” said Sisolak.

FITNESS&NUTRITION II GOJI BERRIES
Critics call this hype. Devotees call it a cure-all. Celebrities, athletes and fitness professionals swear by them. Their popularity and consumption have risen dramatically during the last few years.

How do goji berries compare to other health foods? Consider this — they reportedly have more vitamin C than oranges, more iron than spinach, more amino acids than bee pollen and more beta carotene than carrots.
BERRY BENEFITS
Grown for thousands of years in the remote, unpolluted soils of China, Mongolia and Tibet, goji berries come from shrubs so delicate the berries can’t be picked by hand. They have to be gently shaken from the vine and then sun dried.
Just like most berries, goji berries contain antioxidants and other compounds that may help in the prevention of cancer and heart disease. These antioxidants may also help boost the immune system and lower cholesterol.
The sun drying method results in shriveled, red berries that look and feel like red raisins. Some swear by their tangy taste. Others contend that they are slightly sweet, sour and nutty, and taste somewhere in between a cranberry and a cherry.
Since time immemorial, the Chinese have sworn by the longevity benefits of goji berries, as well as their healing powers in treating diabetes, high blood pressure, fever, circulation, eyesight, fertility, sexual function and a host of other health issues.
There are supposedly more than 40 varieties and different potencies of these super berries, which noted nutritionist Paul Brelin once hailed as the “most nutritionally dense food on Earth.”
Preliminary studies of goji berry juice have revealed that it can significantly improve mental well-being, quality of sleep and athletic performance among others.

Anthony Munkholm, a certified personal trainer at Bally Total Fitness in Oxnard swears by the many positive attributes of goji berries. “Though I’m not supposed to recommend dietary changes, I have mentioned to my clients the many advantages and over-all health benefit of consuming goji berries,” said Munkholm, who has long incorporated the super food into his diet regimen. As a general rule of thumb, it is best to check with your doctor before embarking on any diet regimen or trying new supplements, especially if you are on other medications. Thought to be largely harmless, their consumption may have some possible interactions with certain drugs such as blood thinners, blood pressure and diabetes drugs, according to WebMD. People with pollen allergies are also advised to proceed with caution.
FINDING YOUR BERRIES In traditional Chinese medicine, goji berries are brewed into a tea or eaten raw like raisins or dried cranberries. They can also be added to dishes such as congee (a porridge made from rice), almond jelly and soups, as an ingredient or as a garnish.
Goji berries come in juice, powder or supplement form. In the U.S., these berries have started to make an appearance in snack items such as trail mixes, granola bars and even yogurt. When opting for the juice form, look for the pure goji berry juice instead of blended juices. Look for the 100 percent goji berry juice label, indicating that the juice is unpasteurized and as close as possible to its original form. To purchase, look for goji berries at Chinese herbal shops, health food stores, specialty stores, gourmet shops and also online.
BERRY TREND “Just make sure they are organic and from a credible source. There is a lot of abuse in the super food market these days,” said Munkholm. Are they a fad or a future staple in the American diet? Munkholm weighs in. “I do not anticipate them becoming a staple in our diet because we’re too focused these days on more food for less money. Real organic food costs more to produce,” he said.

Great for breakfast on the go! These delectably chewy, no-fuss energy bars are perfect for hiking or an easy breakfast after a morning work-out.
INGREDIENTS:
1. Preheat oven to 350째F. Coat an 8-inch-square pan with cooking spray. 2. Spread oats, almonds, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds and sesame seeds on a large, rimmed baking sheet. Bake until the oats are lightly toasted and the nuts are fragrant, shaking the pan halfway through, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl. Add cereal, currants, apricots and raisins; toss to combine. 3. Combine almond butter, sugar, honey, vanilla and salt in a small saucepan. Heat over medium-low, stirring frequently, until the mixture bubbles lightly, 2 to 5 minutes. 4. Immediately pour the almond butter mixture over the dry ingredients and mix with a spoon or spatula until no dry spots remain. Transfer to the prepared pan. Lightly coat your hands with cooking spray and press the mixture down firmly to make an even layer (wait until the mixture cools slightly if necessary). Refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes; cut into 8 bars.
tip
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats 1/4 cup slivered almonds 1/4 cup sunflower seeds 1 tablespoon flaxseeds, preferably golden 1 tablespoon sesame seeds 1 cup unsweetened whole-grain puffed cereal 1/3 cup currants 1/3 cup chopped dried apricots 1/3 cup chopped golden raisins 1/4 cup creamy almond butter 1/4 cup turbinado sugar 1/4 cup honey 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/8 teaspoon salt
DIRECTIONS:
Make Ahead - Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 1 month; thaw at room temperature. *Recipe courtesy of www.eatingwell.com.
