PUBLISHER’SLETTER | ANN ALCOCK

A gathering of slippers

ANN K. ALCOCK PUBLISHER & C0-FOUNDER

JANUARY OF THIS YEAR BROUGHT FOR MANY OF US A LIST OF HOPES and plans for a fresh, new start for 2011. The creation of new year’s resolutions stimulates our mental energy and aspirations to exercise more, stick to a healthy diet, quit smoking, be more tolerant towards the ones who tax our patience, and the list goes on only to find that by the time we reach May, unexpected mishaps and our humanness have vaporized our best of intentions. Last year a new tradition started for me as I was brought into a circle of new friends. A brilliant woman named Carol has taken a different approach to the usual post-holiday swearing of unrealistic goals. Every year she has a small party of women gather at her home and simply calls it Fun, Food, and Flannels …and that’s exactly what it is. We show up in flannel robes, comfy pants, nightgowns and throw a bit of humor in with over-sized bunny slippers. This year the champagne toasts consisted of the celebration of one another with love and respect, the conversations flowed freely and effortlessly, and the food was savory and as comfortable as the slippers we wore. This is not just about post-holiday survival, it is about honoring one another for each challenge and each victory that we faced during the past year. Dinner ended with a moment to write down all of the things that happened during the year, and with an air of sacredness we threw our lists into the fireplace. We stood for a moment in silence as we watched the flames consume our written words. A collective consciousness of intention for our futures was felt by all. What I left with that night was a sense of comfort, knowing that women are nurturing not only to family, but to friends. When one is down, the others gather around her and give her the support and comfort that is needed….just like a pair of comfy slippers. In this issue we present three views on the treatment of depression and information to better understand cardiac arrhythmias. You’ll also find our picks for the best shopping spots in town and you can learn more about the power of touch. We connect you with Dr. Hilda Maldonado who offers some women-to women advice. Learn about toxoplasmosis and full body detoxification. Also, learn more about the exciting dance-fitness program, Zumba. Medical Clinic

Helping Patients Discover Beauty Inside and Out Offering the newest technology in aesthetic treatments performed only by board-certified physicians, ABM Medical and Cosmetic Laser Services is a top medical and aesthetic center committed to all medical services for pediatrics and adults as well as results-driven skin clinic, laser hair removal, skin rejuvenation, Botox, Restylane, vein therapy, microdermabrasion, acne and medical grade facials and more. “Many people who come to use the medical and cosmetic services at ABM Medical & Cosmetic Laser clinic say that it is a one stop shop for them,” said Dr. Maryam Mortezaiefard, co-owner of ABM along with her sister, Dr. Mina Mortezai. “For example, a mom brings her son to get immunization and she gets her Botox at the same visit. Or a mom brings her 11-year-old daughter for an upper lip laser hair removal and she gets her blood drawn for her thyroid hormone check at the same time, or a free consultation for spider vein evaluation. We are also known as an urgent care center that is open on Saturdays.” Both laser experts, the sister duo have performed more than 25,000 laser procedures in their last eight years together in practice. Serving clients ranging in age from newborns to seniors, the clinic’s doctors are board certified physicians who perform all procedures themselves, be it a simple upper lip laser hair removal or a dermal filler injection, or a medical visit for adults or pediatrics.

“At ABM, our primary and ultimate goal is to keep quality of care and services at the highest level,” Dr. Mortezaiefard said. “Our board-certified physicians are up to date on medical treatments and also have gone through advanced training in cosmetic lasers and aesthetic medical procedures.” The doctors at ABM Medical believe that the key to finding the most effective measures and maintaining each patient's individual sense of beauty and well-being is education. “The core belief of our practice is that education is truly the only way to find the perfect balance between health and beauty,” Dr. Mortezaiefard said. “We believe that knowledge is power; the more informed and educated a person is with regard to a procedure or a medical issue, the more comfortable and confident one feels about their treatment and their treating doctor. Regardless of what service a person requires, quality always matters to us. We are enormously devoted to bring out and enhancing the beauty in everyone and increasing their self-confidence.” The clinic is open on Saturdays, “and anyone can essentially get a same day appointment if they need to be seen urgently,” Dr. Mortezaiefard added. “Also we do have very affordable laser hair removal, laser scar and acne treatment, and laser skin tightening packages. Consultations are always FREE!”

Regenerative & Anti-Aging Medicine For nearly 20 years, Dr. Hilda Maldonado has been in private practice. Based in Westlake Village, Dr. Maldonado is board-certified in internal medicine. She also received post-graduate training in preventive health, functional medicine, nutrition and anti-aging medicine.

DR. HILDA MALDONADO

“endocrinology and how hormones work really fascinated me. i was deeply interested in the imbalances that people were having and how they came to be.”

Asthma for instance, looks pretty straightforward to most medical professionals. But a functional medicine practitioner such as Dr. Maldonado looks beyond the obvious respiratory issue to find the root cause for a person’s asthma, which may eventually turn out to be a food intolerance or allergy. “Endocrinology and how hormones work really fascinated me. I was deeply interested in the imbalances that people were having and how they came to be,” added Dr. Maldonado, who completed post-graduate training in functional and anti-aging medicine.

> FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE Well ahead of her time, Dr. Maldonado remembers playing doctor with her dolls, giving them “injections,” and doing everything she could to keep them well and healthy. After she breezed through high school and college with excellent grades, she was faced with a dilemma: medicine or law. She remembered her wellness quest as a little girl and gravitated toward medicine. Another fork in the road came when it was time to choose a specialty. She took the internal medicine route. “I wanted to understand how the body works, knowing what a complicated machine it is,” she explained her natural choice. As a conventional internist, she saw how the health system was turning her and her colleagues into mere medication prescribers. Fate intervened when she met Joanna Rose, an acupuncturist who works for her to this day. Rose pointed her toward functional medicine and its many benefits. “I realized that prescription medications are not the only cure and there are many others that can be integrated,” she recalled her foray into this emerging field of alternative medicine that focuses on prevention. Instead of symptoms, functional medicine seeks to find underlying causes and imbalances which may be causing poor health and chronic illnesses. The term functional medicine was contrived in the early 1990s, with preventive care and patient individuality as its main emphasis.

To illustrate further, a middle-aged woman on anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medications may be having hormonal imbalance issues. Dr. Maldonado would use physiology extensively to understand the biochemistry of that person. “It’s a different kind of thinking and it involves retraining your mind,” Dr. Maldonado explained.

> PATIENT-CENTERED APPROACH Dr. Maldonado works hand-in-hand with primary care physicians in treating chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia, thyroid disorders, pre-menstrual syndrome, menopause, Hashimoto’s disease, insomnia and other autoimmune disorders. She also works with people simply looking to obtain and maintain optimum health. “I see a lot of women complaining of fatigue which may not necessarily be CFS.” She cited the top patient complaint in her flourishing practice, which could be due to adrenal insufficiencies, among other causes. Initially, Dr. Maldonado does an extensive evaluation with highly specialized nutritional and metabolic factor testing. Based on the patient’s results and responses, she designs an individualized treatment protocol taking lifestyle, exercise and nutritional modifications into account.

her team of four, composed of a master acupuncturist, a lifestyle educator-coach, a medical assistant and an aesthetician. While not averse to prescription medications, she believes in their “judicious use,” sometimes in combination with other therapies. And even during treatment, “We’ll still continue looking for root causes,” she added. A repeat test may also be done six months down the road when the body is working more efficiently to adjust treatment, according to Dr. Maldonado. Her team of four, composed of a master acupuncturist, a lifestyle educator-coach, a medical assistant and an aesthetician, work with Dr. Maldonado in providing a patient-centered wellness approach. Additionally, Dr. Maldonado combines functional medicine with the concept of anti-aging medicine, which includes individual skincare. The aesthetician on staff delivers top-of-the-line skincare treatment. Other services her practice provides include bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, hormone balancing, stress management, nutritional supplementation, lifestyle coaching and a medically-supervised weight loss program. “It’s not invasive at all,” clarified Dr. Maldonado, who addresses weight management as a multi-factorial issue.

> RECENT HEALTH TRENDS With more female than male patients in her practice, Dr. Maldonado has been noticing some disturbing trends lately: hormonal imbalances and the earlier onset of ailments. “I think it’s the environment, pollution and chemical exposure from cleaning products, among others,” Dr. Maldonado cited some of the factors responsible for these recent health trends. In addition, the increased availability of calories through fast food, pre-packaged food and larger portions may also be a contributing factor, according to Dr. Maldonado.

> WOMAN-TO-WOMAN ADVICE “We have to make a concerted effort to conscientious about out eating,” she advised. Dr. Maldonado also suggests partaking of more home-cooked meals, organic produce and organic, hormone-free, grass-fed meat, and fewer processed products. For the majority of women who always put their families and others first and their health last, Dr. Maldonado has some woman-to-woman advice:

1) Be aware of the importance of your spiritual health and practice prayer and/or meditation. 2) Make a conscious effort to carve some time for yourself, no matter how busy you are. 3) Identify stress triggers and develop methods to manage stress. Example: exercise or something fun that helps you de-stress or calm down. 4) Pay close attention to what you put in your body. 5) Be keenly aware of toxic trash and toxic relationships. 6) Empower yourself with information and learn to navigate properly through illnesses that may arise.

SPECIALHEALTHBULLETIN BREAST CANCER SCREENING

BY

JODAI SAREMI, DPM

WHAT YOUR DOCTOR WANTS YOU TO KNOW ABOUT

BReAst cAn scReening SINCE 2002, THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY AND AGENCIES SUCH AS THE U.S. PREVENTIVE SERVICES TASK FORCE (USPSTF) HAVE AGREED THAT MAMMOGRAPHY IS THE STANDARD FOR DETECTING BREAST CANCER.

However, in November 2009 this task force made a contradictory announcement that doctors should not teach women selfexam techniques and that women between the ages of and 40 and 50 do not need to be screened for breast cancer. They claimed that, “The precise age at which the benefits from screening mammography justify the potential harms is a subjective judgment and should take into account patient preferences. Clinicians should inform women about the potential benefits (reduced chance of dying from breast cancer), potential harms (for example, false-positive results, unnecessary biopsies), and limitations of the test that apply to women their age. Clinicians should tell women that the balance of benefits and potential harms of mammography improves with increasing age for women between the ages of 40 and 70.”

An estimated 192,370 women

in the United States were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2009, and about 40,610 were expected to die.

nceR In other words, there was some concern that the costs of screening exams do not justify their widespread use because, statistically, there weren’t enough life-threatening cases of cancer diagnosed in women aged 40 to 50 compared to the number of cancers diagnosed in older women. The costs of false positive tests were another factor in their decision to recommend less screening. The USPSTF report points to the “psychological distress of waiting to see if a lump is cancerous,” as a reason for avoiding screening. They go so far as to say that women shouldn’t feel for lumps in their breasts at all — this would keep them out of the doctor’s office, keep them from getting examined and keep costs down. An estimated 192,370 women in the United States were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2009, and about 40,610 were expected to die. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women (the first is lung cancer). Monthly breast self-exams, along with yearly physical exams, were previously encouraged in an effort to aid in early detection of cancerous tumors or cancerous changes. The USPSTF recommendations truly seem like a step backward in the scheme of things. What hap-

pened to the adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?” And what about the peace of mind that comes from knowing that a lump felt during a self exam is not cancerous? The studies showing that fewer young women (aged 40 to 50) are dying of breast cancer since the inception and widespread use of screening exams have been ignored, apparently, by the USPSTF. Furthermore, analysis of the data by sociologist Rogelio Saenz at Texas A&M University shows that health disparities across racial and socioeconomic lines will widen further if mammography screening begins later in life. “These trends appear to call into question the recommendations for women to wait until they are 50 to undergo regular mammography exams and then to do so only biennially [every two years].” The American Cancer Society, the Medical Association, The American Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American College of Radiology do not the statements made by the USPSTF.

Dr. West (a breast surgeon who consults with patients at Rolling Oaks Radiology in Thousand Oaks), and many other physicians, question the wisdom in a decision that allows younger women, whose cancers tend to be more aggressive when present, go without medical screening for years. I spoke with Dr. Martin Cohen at Rolling Oaks Radiology (ROR) about the services they provide at their comprehensive Women’s Center in Thousand Oaks, and the latest recommendations for breast health. At the Women’s Center, a high-end facility that caters to making its patients feel comfortable as they take advantage of the best imaging technology available today, a large staff of physicians and certified technicians focus on women’s health issues. Every patient referred there by their primary care physician receives a consultation with the radiologist who reads their test results. “Mammography is still the gold standard when it comes to screening for breast cancer,” says Cohen. “Other modalities

If further diagnostic testing is required once the screening exam has identified a questionable spot, ROR can also perform options such as stereotactic needle biopsy, ultrasound or MRI. The doctors choose which test to use to help identify other tumor characteristics and create a treatment plan. For example, ultrasounds show fluid-filled or debris-filled cysts well, and Doppler color flow used with ultrasound shows the blood supply of a malignancy. MRIs are more often used to screen high risk patients, including women with a personal history of breast cancer, since they show areas of abnormal blood flow and help image scarring and noncalcified lesions. Often people come to ROR’s Women’s Center for a second opinion. Most breast lumps are not cancerous; they are benign. Still, some may need to be sampled and viewed under a microscope to prove they are not cancer. Although breast cancer is sometimes found after symptoms appear, many women with early breast cancer have no symptoms. This is why it is so important to get the recommended screening before any symptoms develop.

MAY 2011

Mammography is indicated as a screening tool for women with breast implants too. “Our technicians are specially-trained in handling these cases, since many women fear their implants will rupture when they’re compressed,” says Cohen. “We take the two standard views of each breast and then two views with the implants displaced to better visualize the breast tissue which may be partially hidden by the implants. Since X-rays do not penetrate the implants, our view of possible tumors may be obscured by the implants if we don’t move them out of the way.” Although cases of ruptures have been reported, implant rupture from mammography is a rare occurrence. “Most implant ruptures seen in my career of 28 years have been found in older implants from breakdown of the implant capsule over time or from a direct injury to the breast,” says Dr. Cohen. If it’s indicated, such as if a mammogram shows evidence of a rupture where there is free silicon in the tissue that caused calcifications and scarring, further imaging such as an MRI with contrast injection is performed. Mammography technician Karen Lauridsen recommends that all women schedule their mammogram for one week after their menstrual cycle ends. “Hormonal changes cause tenderness and fullness that may cause the procedure to be uncomfortable,” she says. If a patient is particularly sensitive, Dr. Cohen suggests taking ibuprofen ahead of time, but Lauridsen insists that a good tech will administer a painless mammogram. “It shouldn’t ever hurt to get a mammogram,” she says. “The plastic plate on the mammography machine flexes a bit more than the older metal plates, so compression of the breast is less severe. Also, the person positioning the breast must use a gentle touch. There is no need to be rough.” For more information on types of breast cancer, risk factors and treatments, please visit the American Cancer Society website at www.cancer.org. In the meantime, make healthier choices and try to avoid the following modifiable risk factors:

1. Being overweight or obese after menopause. 2 Use of menopausal hormone therapy (especially combined estrogen and progestin therapy). 3. Physical inactivity. 4. Consumption of one or more alcoholic beverages per day.

However, when the blues are experienced for two weeks or more, they may be a reflection of what is known as clinical depression. “We use the word clinical depression to describe many ranges of experience also known as depressive disorder,” said Howard Blumenfeld, PhD, a psychotherapist and California-licensed Marriage Family Therapist. “Whether we refer to the condition as clinical depression or depressive disorder, it interferes with daily life, normal functioning, and causes pain for both the person with the depression and those who care about him or her.” “Depression is a state of being characterized by sadness, negative thoughts, self loathing and the inability to function well and meet life’s challenges,” said Jonathan Breslow, a licensed acupuncturist and clinical nutritionist. “It is a self-destructive, downhill path where one loses connection with one’s purpose in life and the truth of one’s being.” “If left untreated, depression has several consequences depending on the severity and situation,” said Ed S. Jesalva, MD. “Almost all facets of life are affected with moderate to severe depression. Severe depression can lead to feelings of hopelessness and suicidal thoughts, which can result in a suicide attempt or completion. These often happen in 15 percent of patients who meet the criteria for severe depression.”

> Physical exam It is very rare that anyone comes to my clinic suffering from clinical depression who has not already been diagnosed by a psychiatrist or psychologist. Of those rare exceptions where the patient has not been diagnosed, I take a thorough history while listening to and observing the patient very carefully. Then we use an objective test in the clinic which gives a numerical readout of imbalances in the internal organs according to Chinese medical psychiatry. A clinically-depressed patient’s suffering and imbalance will be clearly represented in the results of this test.

All people with clinical depression do not necessarily experience it in the same way. Along the clinical depression path, symptoms can go from mild depression to moderate to severe depression. As depression becomes more severe there can be thoughts of death and suicide that may lead to attempts to end life. The negative thinking, inappropriate behavior or physical changes need to be reversed as quickly as possible. Not only does treatment lessen the severity of depression, treatment also may reduce the length of time one is depressed and may prevent additional bouts of depression.

> Physical exam Depression is usually classified as mild, moderate or severe and can have varying durations to meet one diagnostic category over another. Symptoms can include a sad or irritable mood; low level of energy and motivation; less interest or loss of pleasure in activities; sleeping too much or having difficulty falling asleep; wanting to be left alone; feeling hopeless; impaired short-term memory or concentration; or thoughts of suicide or wanting to attempt suicide.

TREATMENT

BEFORE

01 ALTERNATIVE My clinic has several ways of naturally treating depression. Each of the following holistic healthcare modalities is effective by itself. However in some cases we know that a sequence of, or synthesis of these treatments produces optimal results. > Clinical Nutrition With clinical nutrition we have access to highly accurate testing on a genetic level which shows imbalances in the brain chemistry and internal organs’ ability to detoxify, which gives the basis of providing precise, natural nutrients the individual’s body-mind state needs to get out of depression and function at the highest levels. > Acupuncture With acupuncture we use a test in the clinic which gives a numerical read-out of the internal organs connected with states of depression. From this test, the patient's own body provides the most effective acupuncture treatment. In some cases we add in Chinese herbal medicine and employ a technique of pulse diagnosis to determine the exact balance of Chinese herbs needed. Initial acupuncture treatment for depression is two times a week for several weeks. Then we evaluate the rate of response and recommend further treatment. > Classical Homeopathy Using classical homeopathy, an extensive profile is taken of the entire body mind constitution. In some cases we trace the state back to a previous generation or prenatal trauma. A homeopathic medicine is given which matches the totality of this state — the underlying original state at the root of the depression. Commonly the homeopathic medicine is repeated about six times a year. > NRCT

In some cases of depression the clinic offers a form of meningeal acupressure known as NRCT which removes restrictions and irritations to the meninges in the cerebrospinal system. Patients who need this therapy often respond immediately to a simple meningeal acupressure gently applied near the neck. This test is non-invasive, complementary, and just takes a few minutes to perform. Patients who are candidates for NRCT are given a series of several treatments to determine their rate of response then a treatment plan is created.

02 INTEGRATIVE

03 CONVENTIONAL

Depression can be successfully treated in a variety of ways, including psychotherapy, medication and complementary alternatives.

One of the keys to avoiding moderate depression is to try to reduce and modulate stress.

> Talk Therapy Talk therapy has proven very helpful for many forms of clinical depression. Psychotherapy can be used alone or in combination with medication or other treatments. Two types of talk therapy are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). CBT helps reduce depression symptoms by challenging and reversing negative beliefs and attitudes. IPT helps facilitate the resolution of role disputes with interpersonal factors that may impact the development of depression. > Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction is an eight-week complementary treatment to most conventional approaches in treating depression. Developed more than three decades ago at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, Mindfulness Training helps a person live in the present moment and ride more easily the ups and downs of life.

> Anti-depressant Medications Antidepressants help in alleviating the core symptoms of depression so that the person can return to a higher level of functioning. This can include ameliorating feelings of sadness, hopelessness, worthlessness and thoughts of suicide. > Exercise A tool often prescribed is physical exercise. This can range from light to moderate walking to more vigorous cardiovascular-oriented exercise with weight training. Other activities can include yoga, meditation, Pilates, hiking, cycling or swimming. > Diet Certain foods high in fish oils are especially helpful in promoting brain cell health and integrity necessary for proper functioning. Foods that are natural sources of Vitamin B, D, and E are helpful. > Sleep Equally as important is getting enough rest, especially sleep. One of the earliest signs of depression is insomnia and may predict future depression.

By intentionally learning to bring a non-judgmental awareness to breathing, body sensations, thoughts, and feelings (including fears, anger, frustrations, desires, and self-doubts) a person is better equipped to deal with the challenges of life including depression.

“Almost all (95 percent) of Americans with hearing loss can be treated with hearing aids. nine out of 10 hearing aid users report improvements in quality of life.

Little Known Facts About Hearing Loss 1. Hearing loss is called the invisible handicap because there are no outward signs of difficulty or disorder and the loss is almost always gradual, usually over a period of years, and there is no pain.

2. Among seniors, hearing loss is the most prevalent medical condition, following arthritis and hypertension. 3. People with diabetes are twice as likely to have hearing loss as those without diabetes. 4. Smokers and overweight individuals are also at increased risk for hearing loss. 5. Inability to hear and understand instructions by physicians, pharmacists or caregivers can put personal health in jeopardy. 6. Men who regularly use aspirin, acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs experience more hearing loss. 7. Also, men who take phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors are twice as likely to develop hearing loss as men who do not. 8. Depression, isolation and alienation can plague those who have hearing loss.

MAY 2011

Toxoplasma gondii, a protozoan (single celled) parasite that invades mammalian cells, causes problems for the host by killing the host cells. Found all over the world, it infects males and females of any age, and it can attack every type of tissue in the body, from brain cells to muscle cells, including the heart, lungs and liver. It can even live unharmed inside white blood cells.

METHOD OF TRANSMISSION/INFECTION The parasite has two phases of life, sexual and asexual, which require specific hosts. Only feline species can host the sexual phase that makes infectious oocysts (fertile eggs). But a cat may acquire the infection by eating either an oocyst or a rodent which has pseudocysts in its body. If cat feces falls in an area where other animals such as sheep, cows and pigs live, they may eat the oocysts too. People get infected if they don’t wash their hands after changing a cat litter box when oocysts accidentally enter the mouth or eye; or people may get sick from undercooked meat containing pseudocysts. Fruits and vegetables in contact with contaminated soil may carry oocysts. According to the Centers for Disease Control, toxoplasmosis is, in fact, the third leading cause of foodborne deaths in the U.S. Humans can also get this parasite through blood donations, organ donations and congenitally. If a woman is exposed to the parasite during her pregnancy, it is passed to the fetus through the placenta. The baby may suffer from retinochoroiditis (which causes blindness), mental retardation and/or epilepsy. Infections acquired outside the mother typically cause only peripheral lesions. In the U.S., a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey showed there is a higher seroprevalence (having a higher prevalence of it in their blood serum) in the Northeastern and Southern states. Other risk factors, according to the survey, include being born in a foreign country, having a lower education and living in a crowded environment or working frequently with soil.

LIFE CYCLE Once an oocyst is eaten by an intermediate host (human, mouse, cow, pig or sheep), digestive juices help release the parasites from the cyst. T. gondii swim into the intestines and penetrate the wall where they spread in the blood by hitching a ride inside white blood cells (WBCs). Once they mature and multiply

AccoRding to the centeRs foR diseAse contRol, toxoplAsmosis is, in fAct, the thiRd leAding cAuse of foodBoRne deAths in the u.s. inside the WBCs, killing these cells, they are released to other tissues where they invade the new cells. Note, however, that because the parasite cannot produce oocysts anywhere except in a cat’s intestines, only cats transmit the disease. It is not transmissible between humans. If the individual’s immune system is strong enough, it can arrest the process of development at a pseudocyst stage. This is when the parasite is dormant and doesn’t travel until the next opportunity to resume its life cycle. The host may experience only swollen lymph nodes and low-grade fevers similar to mononucleosis infections. Brain tissue is the preferred area of pseudocyst concentration. If a cat eats a mammalian host infected with T. gondii pseudocysts, the sexual development of the parasite begins and the life cycle is complete.

DON’T TOSS KITTY OUT WITH THE LITTER BOX Oocysts are eliminated in cat feces for three to 10 days after infected meat has been digested. However, oocysts don’t become infectious or active until they’ve been at room temperature for one to four days. They remain infectious for up to one year in the soil. But if they are frozen or heated to 70 degrees Celsius, they die. According to Drew Weigner, DVM, a board-certified feline expert based in Atlanta, the window of opportunity for infection is actually quite small. First, the cat would have to eat raw meat containing the parasite. Then, within two weeks of ingesting the meat, while he is shedding oocysts, a pregnant mother would have to change the litter box after the oocyst incubation stage outside the body is over. Furthermore, she would have to make contact with the feces and then not wash her hands before touching her mouth or eye. If the cat never goes outside and never eats raw meat, the chances of the litter box being contami-

TREATMENT AND PREVENTION Since toxoplasmosis infections are self-limiting (the body fights it on its own), antibiotics and antiparasitic drugs typically are used only if symptoms persist more than four months or if the parasite has invaded the brain and threatens the eyes. Side effects of the drugs include kidney disease, liver disease and, in the case of clindamycin, pseudomembranous colitis, which causes severe diarrhea. If toxoplasmosis is contracted during the first trimester of pregnancy, termination of the pregnancy is offered. Based on whether tests show the parasite has crossed the placenta, specific antibiotics may be used. All treatments run the risk of fetal malformations or interference with development. If the baby contracted the infection, he is treated with antibiotics for up to one year after birth.

In case number one, confirming the presence of the parasite involves using the host’s blood or other body fluid for the inoculation of a mouse. If the mouse’s body fluids or brain tissue show the parasite after three to five weeks, diagnosis is confirmed. Antibodies, i.e., immunoglobulins (Ig), activated by the organism are detectable in the blood of otherwise healthy hosts. Titers or levels of IgM, IgG and complement fixing (CF) antibodies are measured. Depending on how much time has passed between the initial invasion of the organism and the time the test is done, different antibodies are visible. IgM is produced within a few days after the infection. IgG is detected within 1 to 2 weeks. CF antibodies are detectable a month after initial exposure. DNA from T. gondii can be detected in a variety of host body fluids: urine,

It is important to note that no vaccines or medications can prevent toxoplasmosis. The best way to avert an infection is to avoid consuming uncooked meat and to avoid soil contaminated with oocysts. If contact with soil is unavoidable, then gloves should be worn and the hands should be washed upon finishing the job. As always, it is a good idea to wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating, and then wash the hands afterward. The workspace in the kitchen should also be vigilantly cleaned. Women who own cats or work with cats and are thinking of getting pregnant should consult a physician to discuss the risk factors for contracting toxoplasmosis. For peace of mind, appropriate tests should be administered before proceeding with plans to conceive.

MY PATIENTS’ TOP CONCERNS ARE FATIGUE, BLOATING, ACHINESS AND FOGGY THINKING. DURING 25 YEARS AS A CLINICAL NUTRITIONIST I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THESE ARE SYMPTOMS OF TOXICITY.

Detoxifying the body can improve

energy and vitality, regain mental focus, promote clearer skin, improve digestion, and aid in weight loss because toxins are stored in the fat cells.

38 | yhcMAGAZINE.COM

MAY 2011

IN TODAY’S WORLD OUR BODY IS ILL equipped to deal with the constant onslaught of toxic burden from heavy metals, pesticides, medications, environmental chemicals and antibiotics that leach into our food and water supply. We also abuse our bodies with too much caffeine and sugar as well as processed foods loaded with dyes, chemicals and food additives which are all toxic to our body. The body’s primary detox systems are the liver and lymphatic system. Your liver is your body’s primary filter. Just like a car filter, it needs to be cleaned annually and in some cases every six months. When the liver is overburdened, the toxins spill over into the blood and your body really becomes burdened. Your lymph system, kidneys, colon and skin are called in to play to help deal with the toxic burden. Your hormones become imbalanced and your health quickly declines. The liver is a key organ in your body’s eliminatory system and is the chemistry lab for the entire body, producing thousands of enzymatic functions. When we allow the liver to load up with poisonous materials, the important functions of this chemistry lab are restricted. When this filter is clogged, toxins spill over into the blood and cause autointoxication, leading to flu-like symptoms, unclear thinking, skin eruptions and a host of other problems. At this point a liver cleanse is not enough; a systemic detox is necessary. The importance of doing everything possible to take care of the liver can never be over-emphasized. When a woman’s liver becomes overloaded, her breasts become painful and develop lumps; fibroids begin to form as well as other reproductive disorders. This is also when men begin to develop the first signs of prostrate disorders. When the liver is no longer capable of cleansing the blood, the entire body begins to saturate with toxic waste and begins to break down! The liver is a key organ in your body’s self-defense system, too. It changes, or detoxifies, many harmful substances into forms your body can safely eliminate. In today’s world of processed foods and pollution, toxic substances exist almost everywhere from the food and water you put into your body to the air you breathe. Your body even produces toxins as it processes and converts substances for elimination.

When the liver is not in peak health it cannot detoxify certain substances as rapidly or completely as it should, resulting in more concentrated toxic substances circulating in the body. These toxins can be stored in fatty body tissue such as the brain and central nervous system. Stored toxins may be slowly released into the blood, especially during weight loss, which contributes to many chronic illnesses. That is why I always recommend a systemic homeopathic detox with weight loss programs. The good news is, it’s easy to detoxify your whole body and boost your body’s natural immunity. In my experience, detoxifying the body can improve energy and vitality, regain mental focus, promote clearer skin, improve digestion, and aid in weight loss because toxins are stored in the fat cells. In fact, my patients regularly comment on how vibrant they feel after a systemic detox! Research clearly proves that our bodies are incapable of eliminating all the different toxins and chemicals we inhale and ingest in today’s toxic environment. They accumulate in our cells (especially fat cells), tissues, blood, and organs (such as the colon, liver and brain) and remain stored for an indefinite length of time causing all kinds of health problems. There are more fat cells in breast tissue and brain cells. Is it any wonder that breast and brain cancer are on the rise? The body stores toxins in the fat cells. When the fat cell reaches its capacity it makes a new fat cell. Do you see how toxicity affects obesity?

WHEN IS IT TIME TO DETOXIFY? If you experience any of the following symptoms it’s time to detoxify: Diarrhea, belching or gas, heartburn, mood swings, depression, fatigue, apathy, lethargy, hyperactivity, blurred vision, dark circles under eyes, headaches, faintness, insomnia, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, poor memory, confusion, poor concentration, slurred speech, gagging, frequent need to clear throat, stuffy nose, hay fever, excessive mucus, acne, body odor, rashes, dry skin, hair loss, excessive weight, compulsive eating, binge eating or drinking, joint pain, arthritis, stiffness or chest pain. Many Americans today suffer to some extent from toxicity. However, nutritional support is available. With a proper cleansing program the body can clear itself of unhealthful toxins and restore the body’s balance so it functions properly. A good cleansing program provides simple, yet specific dietary guidelines in combination with complete and nutritionally-balanced supplemental support.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DETOXIFY? Because you are continually bombarded with numerous toxic substances you should do a liver detoxification at the change of every season (every three months) to prevent the build-up of potentially carcinogenic substances in your body. You should do a systemic homeopathic detox every six months. One of the body’s primary selfdefense mechanisms is to convert and neutralize metabolic products and toxins into safe byproducts which can be eliminated from the system. Simply put, the liver’s ability to detoxify substances is what prevents the body from poisoning itself. Repeated exposure to toxins in the food and environment, along with the accumulation of naturallyoccurring toxins inside the body, can greatly intensify an individual’s detoxification burden.

yoU SHoUlD Do A SySTEmIc HomEopATHIc DETox EvERy SIx monTHS.

How to Avoid Contact with These Harmful Substances: 1. Buy organic fruits and vegetables, freerange, hormone-free eggs, poultry and meat. Choose wild fish rather than farm-raised. Eat whole foods instead of pre-packaged foods. Get your meats from the butcher and have them wrapped in butcher paper because the plastic wrap contains hormone disrupters, now called obesogens, that make you fat! 2. Eliminate fructose, refined sugars, saturated fats and trans-fats. These disrupt your hormones, making you fatigued and fat and contributing to headaches! 3. Use natural household cleaners, personal health care products and makeup. 4. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of purified, alkaline, ionized water daily. Drink 1 to 2 green drinks daily to alkalize your body. 5. Consume lots of high fiber, high water content organic fruits and vegetables, as well as brown rice, beans and legumes. 6. Take detoxifying products as needed. 7. Exercise, perspire, breathe deeply and eat less. 8. Reduce your stress and practice positive emotions. Remember it is not a question of if we are carrying these toxic burdens, but rather how much and to what extent they are affecting our health!

A WOMAN’S HEART IS WIRED DIFFERENTLY THAN A MAN’S. SEX HORMONES PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE IN A WOMEN’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE HEART WORKS THROUGH AN ELECTRICAL SYSTEM THAT CAN BE MARKED AND MEASURED ON THE SURFACE WITH THE ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG). The ECG detects the electrical activity of the top chambers of the heart: the atria, the p wave, followed by a sharp deflection — the QRS, which represents the electrical activity of the ventricles of the heart. Following the QRS is a recovery interval, marked on the ECG by a hump, and the distance between the beginning of the QRS and the end of this hump, the T wave, is called the QT interval. The electrical activity we see on the surface is created by the sequential and sometimes simultaneous activity of a number of channels in the muscle membranes of heart tissue to allow certain ions, such sodium, calcium, potassium, and some chemicals, such as acetylcholine, and ATP (an energy molecule) to cross into or out of the cell. The structure of these channels is determined genetically, and to some degree their genetic expression varies with gender. For example, in men, the QT interval is always shorter than a woman’s. Genetic diseases, therefore, such as congenital long QT interval, become more marked in females with time, and it is not unusual to find congenital long QT syndrome as a cause of syn-

cope (fainting from insufficient blood flow to the brain) and sudden death in young women, out of proportion to the incidence in young men and male children. Other concerns for women include: > Palpitations: What to do and when to worry? > Atrial Fibrillation: How to treat or cure in order to possibly stop Coumadin or other drugs. > Postural Orthostatic Hypotension: Why are women more susceptible than men? > Sudden death in women. > Pacemaker or Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator (ICD) therapy: How to choose the appropriate treatment for the appropriate patient.

PALPITATIONS — WHEN TO WORRY? Palpitations are more common in women than men. Some may be benign and others can be life threatening. If one is having episodes of palpitations, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, near fainting, skipped heart beats, slow or rapid heartbeats, then monitoring is crucial to determine the cause of these symptoms.

Symptoms of palpitations represent 15 to 25 percent of all the symptoms reported by female heart patients. They are associated with: > Premenstrual syndrome. > Pregnancy. > The perimenopausal period. When palpitations are present, the doctor begins his or her evaluation by looking for underlying heart disease. The importance of palpitations and the need for treatment is determined by the presence of underlying heart disease, the type of irregular heartbeats that are occurring and other symptoms. Estrogen and progesterone levels rise and fall throughout the month in women with a normal menstrual cycle (see Figure 1). The rise of progesterone and the fall of estrogen correspond with: > More frequent episodes of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) — any tachycardic rhythm originating above the ventricular tissue — less deadly than those occurring within the ventricular tissue. > More symptoms associated with SVT.

A 24-hour holter monitor may be indicated in order to determine the cause. However, if one is having the episodes infrequently, then monitoring for up to 21 days may be required. If the episodes are less frequent, then an implantable loop recorder (ILR) may be suggested.

> SVT of longer duration.

WHAT ARE THE TRIGGERS OF ARRHYTHMIA? Triggers may be house cleaning chemicals, energy drinks, nasal decongestants, stress, caffeine, and of course hormonal changes. It is crucial to document the time in a women’s cycle the symptoms begin because hormonal changes can play a role.

SYMPTOMS OF IRREGULAR HEART RHYTHMS An arrhythmia may be silent and not cause any symptoms. A doctor can detect an irregular heartbeat during an examination by taking your pulse, listening to your heart or by performing diagnostic tests. If symptoms occur, they may include: > Palpitations — a feeling of skipped heart beats, fluttering, flip-flops or feeling that the heart is running away.

During perimenopause (the time period before menopause), there is a marked decrease in ovarian estrogen production. This is associated with an increase in heart rate (sinus tachycardia) and an increased frequency in palpitations and non-threatening arrhythmias, such as premature ventricular contractions or PVCs. Menopause causes a further decline in estrogen as the menstrual cycle stops. This time period is associated with irregular heartbeats, palpitations, spasmodic chest pain and nightmares in women 40 to 64 years old.

> Pounding in the chest. > Dizziness or feeling light-headed. > Shortness of breath. > Chest discomfort. > Weakness or fatigue (feeling very tired).

The Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study (HERS) found no benefit in use of hormone replacement therapy to reduce cardiovascular events, and hormone replacement therapy may even increase the risk of thromboembolism (blood clot) during the first year of menopause.

HRT is also associated with lengthening the QT interval, although the relevance of this finding is not known. On the other hand, HRT may decrease palpitations and other symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia, and sweating. Therefore, it may be considered a treatment option in low risk female patients to relieve palpitations.

ATRIAL FIBRILLATION: CAN WE STOP COUMADIN AND OTHER MEDICATIONS? Yes, atrial fibrillation is a chaotic electrical disorder of the atria. It usually generates from the left atrium and disturbs the right atrium. Atrial fibrillation carries the risk of causing a stroke.

Pain Inflammation Spinal Pains Headaches Chronic Allergies Irritable Bowel

The latest and greatest therapy options include atrial fibrillation ablation. This is a procedure where the triggers of the disturbing electrical activity are cauterized in order to restore normal rhythm. It is an outpatient procedure with an overnight observational stay. MIRA REVERENTE

BREAST cAncER FUnD THE STATISTICS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. ONE IN EIGHT WOMEN WILL BE DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER. THE NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE (NCI) RANKED BREAST CANCER THIRD IN ITS RECENTLY RELEASED LIST OF 10 CANCERS THAT KILLED THE MOST PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES BETWEEN 2003 AND 2007.

The last few decades saw not only the rapid growth of this deadly disease but also the cancer movement, and along with it, the breast cancer movement. Several non-profit organizations tirelessly raise money specifically for breast cancer research and cure. One of these stands out as a result of its remarkable foresight and focus.

HOW THE BREAST CANCER FUND IS UNIQUE “While other organizations within the breast cancer movement are focused on research and cure, we are focused on prevention,” explained Shannon Coughlin, the Breast Cancer Fund’s (BCF’s) director of communications. Founded in 1992, the San Francisco-based non-profit agency gradually started shifting the national focus to prevention. More recently, it also started taking part in national policymaking, lobbying for stricter environmental regulations and supporting bills banning harmful chemicals in common household items. “Our impact has been growing exponentially in the last few years,” Coughlin proudly stated. BCF has more than 90,000 supporters, as evidenced by its swelling number of followers on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter and recipients of its email blasts.

HOW THEY EFFECT CHANGE In a nutshell, BCF helps translate the growing body of scientific evidence linking breast cancer and environmental exposures into public education and marketbased, advocacy campaigns. Take bisphenol A or BPA for instance, an endocrine-disrupting chemical found in consumer products such as food packaging and the lining of canned foods. Not only has BPA been linked to breast cancer, there is also mounting scientific evidence linking it to ADHD and prostate cancer. Coughlin said, “We are pressuring companies to find alternatives to BPA.” This year, 23 states including Alaska, California, Hawaii and Texas have introduced regula-

tions to reduce BPA. On the federal level, Senator Dianne Feinstein has also introduced legislation banning BPA from infant formula, baby bottles and other children’s feeding products. As a founding member of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, BCF has been working with members of Congress regarding safe cosmetics regulation. “Believe it or not, cosmetics and personal care products are not regulated,” lamented Coughlin. Due to this lack of regulation, it is easy for cosmetic companies to claim to be organic despite the presence of toxic chemicals in their products. Phthalates, another group of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, have reportedly been found in cosmetics and synthetic fragrance-infused products. “There is no requirement to disclose exactly what is in the fragrance,” claimed Coughlin. Aside from breast cancer, exposure to phthalates has also been linked to reproductive problems. “We want to close the loophole that allows cosmetics to be unregulated,” said Coughlin. BCF is advocating for an overhaul of the $50 billion industry in the form of safe cosmetics legislation. A bill, the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010, was introduced last July in Congress, and will likely be reintroduced in the new Congress this summer.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED NATIONALLY While BCF has an extensive list of supporters and partners, the need to advocate, lobby and raise funds is never-ending. Approximately 80 percent of its income goes to program costs, which include publication of scientific reports and continuing public education among others. BCF partners with national and local organizations to keep the campaign alive. On its own, it hosts three large fundraising events every year to raise awareness and gain more support. On April 11, the Heroes Celebration will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. This annual event honors environmental health leaders and innovators for their green contributions and philanthropy efforts. This year’s honorees are Kit Crawford, co-owner and co-CEO of Clif Bar and Company; Horst Rechelbacher, founder of Aveda and Kathi Salley Randall, a neonatal nurse and founder of gRN NICU Consulting. This year the annual mountaineering expedition to Mt. Shasta in Northern California, dubbed “Climb Against The Odds,” will occur from June 19th through 25th. At this event, 27 climbers from all over the country will attempt to reach the summit in seven days. BCF will be supporting these climbers as they train, raise funds and climb. Finally, on October 2nd, “Peak Hike,” a one-day hike and healthy living expo will take place in Mt. Tamalpais in Northern California’s Marin Headlands. Hikers can choose between a seven-mile or

MIND SPIRIT WOMEN & ADDICTIONS

BY

PAMELA SAMANTHA MICHAELS

Women AndAddictions

S A C R E D

S E L F

CURRENT MEDICAL RESEARCH CONTINUES TO SHOW THE MANY WAYS IN WHICH WOMEN’S PHYSIOLOGY AND NEUROLOGICAL MAKEUP DIFFER FROM MEN’S, AND AS A RESULT, TREATMENTS FOR EVERYTHING FROM HEART DISEASE TO DEPRESSION TO CANCER ARE NOW BEING REVISED TO ADDRESS WOMEN’S UNIQUE NEEDS. IT COMES AS NO SURPRISE THAT although addictions are a serious problem for men and women alike, women face a unique set of challenges that may require treatment approaches that differ from standard models of care. This is because the psychological and physiological effects of substances are often more severe in women than in men, but more importantly because the root causes of abuse in women are often very different. Recovery isn’t just about healing from an addiction; it’s about recovering and mending the splintered aspects of self that created it. For women, real healing invariably involves reclaiming and embracing the deep power of the sacred feminine.

+++

The mortality rate for women

with addiction is 50 to 100 percent higher than that of men.

First, it’s important to expand our definition of an addiction. We tend to place a tremendous stigma on the label of an addict, conjuring up a media image of colorful celebrities being tossed in and out of rehab. We think addiction is something that couldn’t be further from our own lives. But if we realize how many behaviors and patterns of negative thinking we have all developed allowing us to escape, abandon or

50 | yhcMAGAZINE.COM

MAY 2011

medicate ourselves, including such activities as shopping, sex, gambling, social drinking, tobacco, eating disorders, toxic relationships, prescription drug use, etc., we can see how prevalent addiction truly is, and in how many cases our culture tacitly accepts and encourages it. Some alarming facts to consider: • Four times as many women will die from an addiction-related illness than from breast cancer. • The mortality rate for women with addiction is 50 to 100 percent higher than that of men. • One in four U.S. women has a history of sexual abuse, a statistic which cuts a swath across all socioeconomic levels. And nearly 85 percent of women receiving treatment for substance abuse have a history of physical, emotional or sexual abuse. • Women are twice as likely to attempt suicide as men during their lifetime and have nearly double the incidence of clinical depression and anxiety. • Teenage girls today are just as likely as boys their age to use addictive substances. They become addicted more quickly and are more likely to present with co-occurring disorders such as depression, eating disorders, or cutting.

EMBRACING THE CHILD WITHIN Women are affected differently physiologically by addiction, and the emotional causes differ as well — and are much more complex. As our bodies absorb more toxins physically, so do we absorb and hold on to old wounds. Issues arising from childhood contribute hugely to our lack of self-esteem and learned helplessness, and range from subtle experiences of neglect, abandonment and feeling unheard to traumatizing events of violence and abuse. In many cases, it’s the more insidious, seemingly minor slights of parents and peers that occur at an impressionable age, and wind up having a profound effect on a young woman’s often fragile sense of self-worth. Unfortunately, such early childhood traumas are merely compounded by societal stresses. Despite the women’s movement, women today ironically carry a burden on more fronts than ever before in history. We not only are expected to be successful in our careers, raise a healthy family and sustain a loving, sexual relationship with our partners, but because of unnatural media images of beauty, we’re expected to look like a supermodel while doing it. So our natural, harmonious rhythms and ways of being that we have embodied throughout time with a graceful acceptance have been shifted in recent years to an exhausting, unattainable set of demands.

If we can learn to rest in the deep, spacious knowing that our essential nature is one of compassion and heart-wisdom, we can allow ourselves to become as compassionate with ourselves as we are with others. Ultimately, perhaps we can also choose a consciouslycreated life that is more gentle in its demands.

WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’RE ON OVERWHELM, TRY TO REMEMBER > Practice mindfulness. Take three deep breaths and allow all thought to dissipate with each inhalation and exhalation, bringing your awareness back to the bones of the present moment. Mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques are extremely effective at lowering heart rate, blood pressure, changing brain waves, and enhancing the relaxation response. > Communicate your needs. This sounds easy, but oftentimes isn’t. Remember: the fears that arise over what will happen if you voice your feelings or make your own needs important is based on childhood — and can be healed. You are a strong enough adult to allow the vulnerable child within to speak. > Cultivate a heart-healthy policy in all senses of the word — diet and lifestyle. Create a team of physicians and practitioners who understand your needs as a woman, and promote a state of healthy, dynamic balance — in mind, body and spirit. > Seek loving, life and soul-enhancing relationships. Women endure hardships and recover more quickly from any illness in a supportive, loving group environment, not in isolation. > Create boundaries! Not only is it okay to say “No,” it’s necessary. > Remember that tears and laughter are both potent healing elixirs. Indulge yourself any time the need or desire arises, without apology. And don’t forget to take time to play, with or without your children! The serious issues of addiction we face in our lives today are symptomatic of a far deeper cultural chasm of emptiness and exhaustion of the spirit, which we as women can begin to bridge by simply reaching out to one another. We have been doing this since the beginning of time. But we no longer have rituals or gatherings to honor and support one another through the inevitable transitions, challenges and phases of our lives. The queen archetype is the center toward which the heroine’s journey is constantly spiraling and aspiring, and embodies pure awareness and authenticity in the face of all the imperfections of life. Imagine what it would be like to love and accept the profound grace and fluidity of your body, whatever its size; the fierce passions of your own creative spirit, whether the world recognizes your genius or not; and accept any nurturance and support that is offered as the simple gesture of love that it is. By reclaiming our authenticity, sacredness and voice, we reclaim our own inner power. And when reclaim our power, we heal ourselves. As we heal ourselves, we begin — together — to heal the world.

CORTISOL OR COMPASSION? During challenging times, it is crucial to remember to nurture ourselves. Periods of chronic, unremitting stress permanently turn on the fight or flight response, and the body becomes awash in a stress-induced chemical cascade of cortisol, adrenalin and corticosteroids — with devastating effects.

MY CLIENTS ARE SHOCKED WHEN I TELL THEM I HATE TO EXERCISE. HOWEVER, I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED MUSIC AND DANCING. AS A PERSONAL TRAINER AND FORMER MEMBER OF AMERICA’S OBESE POPULATION, I AM WELL AWARE OF THE BENEFITS OF MOVEMENT.

MAY 2011

WHAT IS ZUMBA The Latin-inspired Zumba dance-fitness program blends hot-hot-hot international music with addictive steps, transforming dull exercise into a fitness extravaganza. You can shamelessly shake and shimmy your way to a shapely body while having the time of your life! What’s more, you don’t need to be a dancer or know the moves! According to www.zumba.com, this phenomenon was conceived in the mid-’90s when Alberto “Beto” Perez, Zumba’s creator, improvised a new kind of dance-fitness using his own mix of music. The idea is to let the music move you rather than counting repetitions. “In his first session, energy electrified the room; people couldn’t stop smiling — Beto’s students loved the class. That day a revolutionary new fitness concept was born — the Zumba fitness party. Since its inception in 2001, the Zumba program has grown into the world’s largest and most successful dance-fitness program with more than 10 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages taking weekly Zumba classes in more than 90,000 locations across 110 countries.” Zumba borrows movement from cumbia, salsa, merengue, mambo, flamenco, cha-cha-cha, reggaeton, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, hip-hop and tango. The feel and personalities of Zumba classes are as varied as the personalities of the instructors. As stated on the Zumba website, the program currently offers six types of Zumba classes: Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Before participants know it, they’re getting fit and their energy levels are soaring! It’s easy to do, effective and totally exhilarating, often building a deep-rooted community among returning students. Zumba Gold classes are geared toward baby boomers. The Zumba formula is modified; the moves and pacing suit the needs of the active older participant as well as those just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle. The class keeps all the elements of the Zumba fitness party: the Latin music — salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton; the exhilarating, easy-to-follow moves; and the invigorating, party-like atmosphere. Zumba Toning classes raise the bar (or rather, the toning stick) when it comes to body sculpting. They combine targeted bodysculpting exercises and high-energy cardio work with Latin-infused Zumba moves to create a calorie-torching, strength-training dance fitness party. Students learn how to

use lightweight, maraca-like toning sticks to enhance rhythm and tone all their target zones, including arms, abs, glutes and thighs. The Zumba Toning class is the perfect way for enthusiasts to sculpt their bodies naturally while having a total blast.

With Mammosite® it only takes 5 days. At Radiation Oncology Centers of Ventura County, we understand that every moment counts. That’s why we offer a revolutionary treatment that takes just 5 days. Aqua Zumba classes, known as the Zumba pool party, give new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. Splashing, stretching, twisting, and even shouting, laughing, hooting and hollering are often heard during an Aqua Zumba class. Integrating the Zumba formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba blends it all into a safe, challenging, water-based workout that’s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief. Zumbatomic classes, designed exclusively for kids (ages 4-12), are rockin’, high-energy fitness parties packed with specially-choreographed, kid-friendly routines and all the music kids love, like hip-hop, reggaeton, cumbia and more. Parents love the Zumbatomic program because it increases kids’ focus and self-confidence, boosts metabolism and enhances coordination. The Zumbatomic program rounds out family fitness goals by giving parents a great reason to head to the gym — for themselves, for their kids, for a totally fun family experience. Zumba in the Circuit classes maximize your workout while you have a total blast. The classes consist of 30 minutes of high-octane, Latininspired dance-fitness moves combined with circuit training and a series of strength exercises at timed intervals. Get the metabolismboosting, strength-building benefits of circuit training while perfecting Zumba moves — all in the same class! Guaranteed to blast calories and thwart boredom, this class moves students from one exercise station to the next to the thumping beats of reggaeton, salsa, merengue, hip-hop and more. Be in and out in 30 minutes flat. This time-effective and efficient class can be adapted for all fitness levels.

If run-of-the-mill group exercise classes bore you, forget your problems, drop your inhibitions and shake and shimmy your way to the best shape of your life! If you would like to join a class or learn more visit www.myhealthstudio.com or call 818.889.3737.

OUR

HUMANITY

“IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IT IS OUR ROLE AS HUMAN BEINGS ALWAYS TO JOIN LEARNING TO LOVING-KINDNESS. LEARNING TO LEARN, LEARNING TO LOVE, AND TO BE KIND ARE SO CLOSELY INTERCONNECTED AND SO PROFOUNDLY INTERWOVEN, ESPECIALLY WITH THE SENSE OF TOUCH, IT WOULD GREATLY HELP TOWARD OUR REHUMANIZATION IF WE WOULD PAY CLOSER ATTENTION TO THE NEED WE ALL HAVE FOR TACTUAL EXPERIENCE.” ASHLEY MONTAGUE

GENERALLY SPEAKING, we live in a low-touch society which has mastered the art of verbal communication at the expense of enriching nonverbal sensory experience. While our technological innovations allow us to reach out and touch someone and keep in touch personally and professionally via super-duper electronic devices and extensive social networks, it can never duplicate the level of connection achieved through the sense of touch. Natalie June Reilly, an expert in corporate communications and publishing, writes that authentic communication is about “the human need for interpersonal interactions, to be able to reach out and touch another human being.” In commenting on our essential need for physical contact, psychologist Dacher Keltner reported that brief, friendly, kind and caring forms of touch, like a pat on the back or giving someone a high-five, affect our health in positive ways through the release of the neuropeptide oxytocin. Oxytocin helps us feel connected to others, supports our immune system, and promotes trust. Keltner proposed that human touch is preventive medicine. A noticeable trend in the beauty world is the current merging of health and beauty. This trend affords aestheticians a unique opportunity professionally to engage with their clientele in such a way that mutually supports our humanity. This is especially true within the context of giving and receiving a facial. According to the Good Spa Guide, (www.goodspaguide.co.uk), “A good facial will leave you glowing with a sense of how beautiful and renewed/rebalanced/restored/rev italized you are.” Scientifically speaking, this state of well-being is achieved because facials provide a tactual experience of skin-to-skin contact between clinician and client. Let me explain.

The skin is the largest sensory organ of the human body, embedded with various types of sensory receptors which allow us to learn about our world and help us develop mutually-satisfying relationships with one another via touch. This dual process begins in infancy, through a mother’s loving touch which nurtures an infant’s sense of self and the capacity to successfully feel connected to others. In fact, touch is the primary way we communicate our caring and support for one another — a means by which we can amplify each other’s feelings of safety, security, and well-being. Research has shown that humans retain a fundamental, instinctual need for skin-to-skin contact throughout their lifespan — to touch and be touched. Judy Rigby of the Massage Training Institute writes that touching is about our “shared humanness and mutual recognition.” It informs us that we’re not alone. This thought brings us to the special needs of seniors who as a group receive the least amount of touch. This may be due to isolation, living alone and the cultural obsession with youth.

Mary Bauer, who works in the health care field, asserted that our culture over-emphasizes “young looking skin,” and that this ideal implies that “older skin is unattractive and thus untouchable.” Whether we personally hold this perspective or not, a thoughtful aesthetician has a unique opportunity to provide a nurturing, caring experience to seniors who seek out his or her professional services. Facials are much more than the application and massage of beauty products into the skin. They are a means of experiencing our connection to self and others through the power of touch and skin-to-skin contact. The next time you receive a facial, we hope you will find it to be a relaxing, nurturing, and supportive experience that leaves you feeling ‘beautiful, renewed, rebalanced, restored, and revitalized!’
