pring is my favourite season and I’m looking forward to it more than ever after a particularly long winter this year. With more daylight hours, it’s a chance for us to spend more time enjoying our horses and they can hopefully spend more time out in the field grazing and enjoying the spring sunshine. I can’t wait to stop wearing layers of winter clothing and the range of summer tops and breeches available this spring looks great – lots of pinks and blues. Our spring gear guide has been fun, if a little challenging, to put together, and I hope it will inspire you and help you decide what products you may need – whether it’s a new pair of

summer breeches or a new lightweight turnout rug for your horse you will find it all here. To help you make the right decisions, our panel of testers used a selection of turnout rugs, summer sheets and fly rugs last summer. You can read how each one performed in this guide. Cross surcingles These should be correctly adjusted to help the rug stay in place. You should be able to fit a hand’s width between your horse’s belly and the strap. This particular rug has a clever addition that keeps the surcingles crossed, making them quicker and easier to fasten.

Guide VICE ADwinter RUGto wither protection It’s important that your horse’s rug fits correctly and doesn’t put pressure on the sensitive wither area. To help keep him comfortable, most rugs will have some form of wither protection, normally sheepskin or a synthetic material. This can also prevent rubbing.

outer material This is what protects your horse from wind and rain. The material is often referred to by its denier measurement. This tells you how durable the rug is likely to be – the higher the denier, the heavier and tougher the fabric is. For example, 600 denier is an everyday strength, 1200 is very strong.

rug lining The majority of lightweight turnout rugs will have no filling in them at all – you simply have the outer fabric and then a lining. Manufacturers tend to use different lining materials, which could include cotton, nylon, or even a mesh-type lining.

shoulder gussets Many rugs have these and they can be a useful addition. They’re designed to provide more room for your horse’s shoulders, giving him more freedom of movement when he’s moving around or having fun with his friends in the field. The extra room may also prevent rubbing at the shoulders.

front fastenings These need careful adjustment as they ensure the top of the rug stays comfortably in front of the withers. There are a number of different types available and it’s all down to personal preference. There are simple buckles, T-bar fastening (similar to on a cross surcingle) or buckle-and-clip fastenings.

How to measure your horse for a rug

Using a tape measure – or a piece of string you can measure later – measure your horse from the centre of his chest, horizontally along his side, finishing at the point of his tail. If your horse is between sizes, you’re usually better to go up a size than down. When you’re trying a rug on your horse, put it on over the top of a summer sheet. This won’t affect its fit but will stop any hair sticking to the rug, so if it doesn’t fit you can return and exchange it. Remember to keep your receipt and all tags from the rugs.

Features Manufactured in 600 denier Teflon-coated rip-stop fabric, this waterproof and breathable rug has a cotton lining, reinforced anti-rub shoulder panels, tail flap and shoulder pleats for freedom of movement. Features include cross surcingles, quick release breast fastenings and leg straps. Matching neck cover sold separately. Colours Navy or dark blue plaid Sizes: 5ft 6in to 7ft Price £54.95 (neck cover £34.99) Tester YH head of products Allison Lowther on her six-year-old mare Wish � This is a nice quality rug. The cut is good and it fits well – although the 6ft 3in size I had wasn’t overly generous compared to others. The breast straps can be easily fastened using the quick release clips. I like rugs with a generous tail flap, which this rug has, as it gives protection around the hindquarters during wet weather. The rug didn’t slip or rub. The neck cover fits well and didn’t move. I did use this rug more without the neck cover but it was nice to have the option to add it on particularly wet days. A good quality rug that has proved to be waterproof and, despite a lot of use, it still looks in good condition. It’s a lot of money for a lightweight rug, though.

Features The Deluxe Turnoutmasta light rug from Masta is both waterproof and breathable, made from yarn-dyed polyester with double rip-stop abilities. It contains no back seam, mesh lining or filling. It has twin adjustable front buckles with a hook-and-loop strip. It has removable leg straps, a shaped tail flap, drip strip and surcingle slots. The neck is quite high and the shoulder gussets go up onto the shoulders for optimum moveability. There was no rubbing or slipping. The large tail flap is effective in keeping out the wind and rain. I love the fact that the surcingles are ‘hidden’ as this stops the rug lifting at the sides in the wind. I didn’t have the neck cover but I like that it’s an option. The only downside is the cost – there are cheaper models on the market.

Features This is ideal for warmer days or for those horses who just need a bit of extra protection from the elements. Manufactured in 600 denier rip-stop polyester, the rug has a mesh lining with nylon anti-rub panels at the shoulder. I didn’t feel the sizing was overly generous – it was Wish’s usual size but a little snug. The mesh lining ensured she didn’t get too hot on warmer days. The tail flap is small and didn’t offer much protection. The rug didn’t slip or rub despite some rigorous rolling. The neck cover fitted well and didn’t rub her mane. A nice rug that’s waterproof and does a good job.

It fitted well and didn’t slip or rub. The shoulder gussets allow for good freedom of movement. I particularly like the lining in this rug – it has a cosy feel to it that doesn’t feel cold, unlike other materials. It must feel much nicer for the horse when you first put it on, too. Quite a lot of money for a lightweight rug but it has performed well.

The fit of this rug is super, the darting around the shoulders and hindquarters gives a great fit, and it doesn’t move and hasn’t rubbed. The material is waterproof and dries quickly. All the fastenings are quick to use and I like the extra strap that fastens over the top of the chest fastenings for extra security. It costs a little more than I would normally spend on a lightweight rug but it has done a good job.

Features This lightweight, three-season sheet is perfect for the mild, rainy spring weather. The 600 denier rip-stop outer has taped seams, and offers waterproof and windproof protection without polyfill. The Landa Original Lite has full nylon lining and adjustable/removable leg straps. Colours Candy/slate and navy/green Sizes 5ft to 7ft (candy/slate) and 4ft to 7ft 6in (navy/green) Price £56.99 Tester YH editor Julie Brown � Vespa wore this rug for up to 16 hours per day and I used it with and without the neck cover. I did find it slightly tight at the front but a bit loose round the neck. Overall, a generous rug that was slightly big over the back even though it was her usual rug size – despite this, the rug didn’t rub or slip. I liked this rug and the addition of a neck cover is a big plus point for me – I was disappointed to hear they aren’t including the neck cover option this year.

Bucas Smartex Rain Turnout

Features This rug has a waterproof and breathable outer material that’s also durable and strong. The unique Click’n Go closure system has a patented stainless steel buckle that can be closed and opened in one easy movement, and the overlapping comfort front with double protection protects your horse from rubbing. Shoulder darts give extra shoulder room and soft nylon lining around the shoulders stops any rubbing. The Stay-Dry lining offers comfort and protection, wicking away any moisture. Colours Blue, brown/gold Sizes 3ft 6in to 7ft 2in Price £123 Tester YH editorial assistant Emily Laughton � I really liked this rug. It’s lightweight but also kept Kishon warm enough on cooler days. The outer material proved to be tough – Kishon is turned out with a rub grabber! The rug has survived with no damage at all. The Click’n Go fastening is easy to use and I like the extra overlap that keeps him rub free. A very good rug with an expensive price tag but I feel it’s worth it.

Features A waterproof and breathable turnout rug, made from 600 denier polyester rip-stop. It’s lined with soft polyester and has no filling. It features twin adjustable front buckles with hook and loop fastening strip, removable leg straps and tail flap. Colours Dark navy and steel Sizes 4ft 6in to 7ft 3in Price £45.50 Tester Alison Johnson used this rug on her 16.1hh Polish warmblood Boss � This is a lovely lightweight rug that fits neatly but still allows good freedom of movement and no rubbing. It’s waterproof and is great for rainy, muddy days, keeping my horse clean and dry without him becoming too hot. I did find the front breast straps quite fiddly – they were secure but they were a little time consuming. This is a great rug that has survived a summer of use with just a small tear in the outer material.

IV Horse Four Seasons 1200 Denier Turnout Rug (no fill)

Features This rug comes with a free neck cover. It features breathable double rip-stop fabric, sprung cross surcingles, removable leg straps, generous gusseted tail flap, and is all nylon lined with quality fittings. Colour Lilac Sizes 5ft to 7ft 3in Price £99.90 Tester YH writer Imogen used this rug on her TB mare Ruby � It’s nice that this rug comes with a free neck cover, providing complete protection from the weather. The outer fabric is tough and waterproof. The cut is quite deep and I would say the sizing is generous. The shoulder gussets provided good freedom. The outer material is light but the fastenings on this rug add a lot of weight, which is a shame. The clips and fastenings at the front of the rug cause the rug to pull down, which is disappointing, this then caused the rug to slip back. I think it’s expensive for a lightweight rug.

Features This has a 600 denier rip-stop, waterproof and breathable ShireTex outer, special lining that helps create a shine on the horse’s coat, shoulder gussets, low cross surcingles, a large tail flap and no polyfill insulation. Sizes 48in to 84in Colours Navy check or brown check Price £54.99 Tester YH editor Julie Brown � A nice-fitting rug, although it did slip slightly over to the right if Vespa had been particularly busy in the field, but it didn’t rub at all. The neck was a little loose, letting in rain and wind on really blustery days. The large tail flap was great for keeping her warm and dry, and the shoulder gusset allowed for movement, although it didn’t go up the shoulder as far as I would have liked. I didn’t really see any difference in Vespa’s coat even though the lining was supposed to create a real shine. I would definitely buy it again as it’s good value for money.

Shires Summer Highlander

Features The Summer Highlander is a quality lightweight, waterproof, rip-stop, breathable turnout rug with 600 denier outer, double breast straps, shoulder gussets, cross surcingles, back leg straps and a tail flap. Sizes 54in to 84in Colours Navy or red Price £46.99 Tester YH writer Imogen Johnson tested this rug on Quarter Horse Dixie � This is a lovely lightweight rug. Easy to use, it fitted nicely, although it felt a little tight at the front because of where the rug sits in front of the wither. It has proved to be waterproof and tough, making it perfect if you want a practical lightweight rug, offering protection from wind and rain. This is a really nice rug – it has washed well and is ready for another summer of use.

The rug fits well and I particularly like the shoulder darts. The front strap is easy to do up and gives a neat finish. It was great to put on the horse straight after work because I knew it would act like a cooler rug. Quite expensive for a summer sheet but this has so many uses I would consider buying one.

All in all, I liked using this rug but I was disappointed with how it washed – it has faded and the wither pad began to fray after a couple of washes.

Price £49.99 Tester YH contributor and show jumping trainer Carol Mailer tested this rug on her horse Jolson � The rug fitted Jolson exceptionally well and was roomy enough round the shoulders to give ease of movement. Jolson is a conventional shape so most rugs suit him, but there was no sign of rubbing or slipping, even when he did his circus act. The combo neck was good and could be used in conjunction with any fly mask. The fastenings were

fine, just conventional – what most people are used to, anyway. It offered excellent protection from flies as the mesh was soft enough to mould round his shape to stop flies and midges getting underneath. I used the belly flap every day, but elastic strap fastenings for the flap would have made it fit a bit closer. The rug I tested had a buzz

pattern on it which I really disliked. This has been discontinued, which meets with my approval, as it made the rug look cheap and gimmicky. Jolson wore the rug for three to four hours a day, every day for around three months, and it stayed fresh and easy to wash and dry with no deterioration, except a little fraying on a small bit of the binding.

I really liked the belly flap on this rug because it’s attached to the main body of the rug and fitted nicely with no slipping. The Lycra panel at the withers is also a great addition – it meant the rug didn’t get tight and moved with him so there was no rubbing. He was definitely protected from flies wearing this and, unlike other fly rugs I’ve used, this material seemed to hug his body shape and didn’t slip. All the fastenings are quick and easy to use – I would definitely choose this rug again.

I would prefer the neck cover to be integral to the rug because, when he was grazing, there were a few gaps where flies could get under the neck cover. The rug was easy to handle. With use, it did mould to his shape and the shoulder gussets gave him plenty of room to move, and it didn’t rub him. This rug also has a nice large tail flap, which offers greater protection, too.

Aerborn Anti-Midge Combo Rug

Features This rug is made from a 280g polyester mesh with two front fastenings and a wide detachable belly piece. Shoulder pleats give your horse more freedom and the large tailpiece provides more protection. Colour White/grey Sizes 4ft 6in to 7ft Price £41 Tester YH reader Cate Croll tested the rug on her two horses Sarah and Capi � This rug fitted both of my horses nicely but it fitted my Thoroughbred Capi better. Sarah is a slightly chunkier build and it did rub her shoulders slightly. Capi gets bitten a lot by flies and this rug did a good job keeping them away so he had a more peaceful time grazing. The rug has had to have a few repairs but this was mainly down to Capi’s fieldmates! All the fastenings are good quality and the rug is easy to handle. I particularly like the elasticated leg straps – they move with your horse, there’s no rubbing and, because you can have them a little tighter than normal leg straps, the rug didn’t slip to the side, which can sometimes happen. All in all, a good quality rug.

Colour White Sizes 5ft to 7ft 3in Price £62.30 Tester YH reader Sue Booth tested the rug on her Hanoverian Laurie � Laurie wore this rug most days during the summer. It fitted him really well and the neck cover was a good size – sometimes, because he has a chunky neck, I can struggle to get neck covers that fit him. The material of this rug is lovely and soft, much nicer than other fly rugs I’ve used. There was no rubbing at the shoulders or on his mane where the neck cover and rug join. The belly flap is quick and easy to fasten, and provides additional protection to the area. The only thing I struggled with is that at the top of the neck it has two ear holes, which I guess are meant to hold the neck cover in place, but didn’t really do the job. As soon as Laurie put his head down to graze his ears slipped out of their slots. This meant that the neck cover did slip down his neck a little. This rug is also really useful in the stable – it’s great at keeping his coat in good condition and keeps all the dust off so he’s lovely and shiny.

The three surcingles on this rug meant the sides of the rug wrapped around her belly, keeping flies out. The outer material of this rug feels tough but it’s still soft enough to mould to her shape. The tail flap is great and the neck cover is a good size too. The only thing I was surprised at was the price – this is a lot of money but it does do a good job, so worth considering if your horse is tough on his rugs and needs protection from flies.

The neck cover is a good size but she wasn’t keen on the strap that passes in front of her ears – she would rub this area and I often found the strap behind her ears. The only thing I would improve is the size of the tail flap, which isn’t generous.

The rug fitted OK but it could have been a little deeper to give more coverage. I also found it quite fiddly to put on and I’m not entirely sure Score was comfortable wearing it. It gave good protection to his body but very little to the belly and sheath area, which is where flies aggravate him most. The material is very lightweight, which made it easy to handle, but a slightly heavier material would have allowed it to mould more to the horse. I really wanted this rug to work and make Score more comfortable when I’m riding him but unfortunately it didn’t live up to my expectations.

The mesh over his face was rigid and stayed away from his face. It doesn’t come down his face as far as others I’ve used but it covered the vital eye area well. There was also plenty of room in the ears. The two straps under the chin held the mask safely in place. A very good price for a well made mask.

Features This full face mask is comfortable, featuring fleece padding across the nose. It’s easy to put on and take off, with a simple hook-andloop fastening strap on the throat. It’s a simple design, it fitted nicely and I especially liked the sheepskin-edge lining – it never rubbed. However, this mask didn’t always stay on for long. We’d often turn up at the field to see it lying on the floor, so while it seemed comfortable and kept flies off Touch’s face, it was obviously easy for her to get off.

He will be confident flies won’t bite him, reducing insect-driven head tossing and giving you a much quieter (and safer!) ride. A must-have for horses suffering from headshaking syndrome. The smaller of the horses I tried it on, Touch, didn’t like the long nose feature and seemed to be irritated by it. On my horse Ruby, who’s a bit bigger, it wasn’t quite as long and fitted nicely. This mask would really benefit a horse who suffers from sunburn. A nice sturdy fly mask with soft ears that fitted nicely on Ruby, stayed on, didn’t rub and worked well.

The zip fastening under the chin is something I hadn’t seen before and occasionally I found it a bit fiddly to do up and more time consuming than the usual straps. The material is light and stretchy, and moved with Kishon when he was grazing. I was slightly concerned that the mesh material over his eyes was too flimsy but, because there’s a lot of it, it stayed away from his eyes nicely. I really liked this mask but unfortunately some of the stitching came undone, so the mesh came away from the Lycra, which was disappointing.

ow’s the time to sort out all your heavy rugs so they’re clean and ready for next winter. Cleaning your winter rugs each year means they will last longer and be more comfortable for your horse to wear. Removing mud, muck and hair from the rug helps your horse stay cleaner and may also help prevent skin problems. You have two options when it comes to getting your rugs cleaned – the first is to have them professionally done. A rug-cleaning company will

wash, reproof if necessary, and do any repairs the rug needs. Your rugs come back to you clean and packaged ready for storage. Prices vary, but expect to pay around £10 to have a turnout rug washed and dried. To have your turnout rug washed, dried and reproofed, you can pay upwards from £16. Some companies will arrange collection and may offer discounts for large numbers of rugs, so it can be worth getting together with your friends to save money.

Alternatively, you can clean your rugs yourself – all you need is a warm, dry day and a bit of elbow grease. Before you start, check the manufacturer’s washing instructions carefully – some detergents will remove waterproofing. There are a number of rug cleaning products available including Nikwax Tech Wash, which is a non-detergent soap and Nikwax Rug Wash, which is good for cleaning breathable, waterproof rugs. Granger’s 30°C Proofer from Abbey Saddlery is a wash-in formula that enhances breathability and increases water and stain repellency.

Dirt and mud is much easier to remove if you leave your rug to soak, preferably overnight – a dustbin is ideal. Alternatively you can use a pressure washer. Lay your rug out on the ground, scrub it with a broom to remove all dirt – repeat on both sides of the rug. Rinse the rug well until the water runs clear, then hang it out to dry. If it needs reproofing, there are various products available, but follow the instructions carefully. Make sure the rug is completely dry before you pack it away.

Summer jods and breeches need to be cool, comfortable, a flattering fit and easy to clean. Here are a few hints to help you pick the right pair � Look for breathable fabrics � Cotton will keep you cooler than a lot of other fabrics, but needs a mix of elastine, Lycra or something similar for comfort � Check the thickness of the material. Thinner fabrics may be cooler, but may show your underwear! � Pull-on jodhpurs are easy to put on, but they can be a close fit showing every lump and bump. � ‘Self-strapping’ or ‘self fabric’ on the knees means the same material is used on the knee area as the rest of the jodhpurs/breeches – it doesn’t provide extra grip � ‘Full seat’ means the whole of the seat area and down the back of the legs is covered in a different material – usually synthetic suede – to give extra grip. Sometimes this isn’t very stretchy which can affect the overall fit

JACKET ADVICE Outer material Choose a lightweight material that’s easy to move about in. The jacket should be waterproof and it’s also good if it’s breathable to help keep you cool.

Cuffs and sleeves Most jackets come with adjustable cuffs for you to alter as required. Elasticated cuffs can be too tight and restrictive.

Drawcord waist When correctly adjusted, these give the jacket some shape, pulling it in slightly at the waist to give it a more flattering, fitted look.

l Rear riding vents Three-quarter length jackets can be difficult to ride in, but with riding vents at the back they can be opened up to allow for more movement and to help stop you sitting on the jacket. Poppers or touch-and-close are popular options.

l Lining A lightweight lining made from a natural material such as cotton is preferable. Some will have a mesh lining, which will help keep you comfortable and cool.
