look FOR The denier is the weight of yarn, so the higher the number, the stronger the rug It’s the filling that adds warmth to the rug; lightweight rugs come with no filling, up to about 115g Consider one-click rug fastenings for ease of use, although these will get filled with mud in extreme conditions Material that’s described as ripstop is made of tiny squares, so if a rip does occur, it will only spread as far as the square containing it goes and not along the entire length of the rug Darting and gussets will make the rug fit better and allow your horse to move more freely The rug must sit in front of the withers, not on them, to alleviate pressure Cross surcingles will help eliminate pressure on your horse’s spine YOUR HORSE SPRING GEAR GUIDE2009 17

look FOR For show classes, it was traditional to wear brown boots with a ratcatcher or tweed jacket, but black is now acceptable – you may, however, want to choose brown boots to match your horse’s colouring Spurs are correct for adult showing classes and for higher level dressage Unless competing at the top levels, a tweed jacket and a black or navy one will cover all eventualities Coloured shirts look great but are for show jumping only Stocks were designed to prevent whiplash. Coloured stocks should only be worn with tweed/hacking jackets Play safe with natural beige breeches – canary yellow is unacceptable for dressage while white is unforgiving

look FOR � Although long boots are correct, if you have narrow or wide calves or ankles, you may find a boot/gaiter combination the only way to go � It may be fashionable to have a high cut on the outside of the boot, but take care that it doesn’t interfere with bending the knee � Wear dark gloves unless your hands are beyond reproach � You may compete in a GP saddle, so don’t let a lack of tack put you off giving dressage a try � For walk and trot Prelim and Novice tests, you should use a snaffle bridle with either a plain cavesson, drop or flash noseband � Gadgets such as martingales, bit guards or training aids aren’t allowed, nor are boots and bandages during the test – but breastplates are permitted
