Equine’s funniest fellas! If you like to laugh as you learn then don’t miss Oliver Townend and Geoff Billington in action in the Countrywide Main Arena this year. We quiz our favourite Your Horse Live double act on making headlines, marriage and staying at the top
The funny men will take centre stage in the Countrywide Main Arena!
Oliver Townend & Geoff Billington
Geoff: I started at the local riding school when I was nine. Ten of us at this riding school decided to form our own little riding club, and the local newspaper, the Accrington Observer, ran a story: ‘10 kids save up to buy a pony’. A local man saw it, and said if we gave £10 to charity we could have a three-year-old Welsh mountain pony he had. So, we all gave £1 and we got the pony. After a few weeks all the girls got boyfriends – and I got left with the pony. Oliver: I’ve always been competitive. I was on my first pony eventing team when I was 12. I did my first 2* event when I was 14. Geoff: I used to jump against a snotty-nosed little kid when I was 13. He was always either equal first with me or beat me. His name was John Whitaker. Oliver: Everyone’s career has ups and downs. I admire anybody who sticks it out. AP McCoy, Tiger Woods… and Andrew Nicholson. He’s 52 years old and all of a sudden he’s learnt to win at top level. I think it’s about time. No one’s put more work in than him. Geoff: Good show jumping horses have got to want to do it. You get a few quirky ones – I’ve got one now that I’ll probably bring to Your Horse Live – he’s really quirky but he’s talented. If you can channel that in the right direction those are the ones that turn out to be superstars. Oliver: Talent’s not enough now, full stop. You need to be hardworking more than anything to succeed in this sport. And you’ve got to be good at all three phases these days to win any class, at any level really. your horse November 2013
Geoff: Married life is good [Geoff married his long-term partner, Sarah, earlier this year]. But then I had a good few years’ trial, so I knew what was coming, and so did Sarah!
Learn and laugh with our comic duo
Oliver: I’ve got no plans to follow Geoff down the aisle. You’ve got to find a girl willing to stay with you first, haven’t you? One step at a time! But I’m definitely open to offers! Geoff: Oliver and I don’t take life too seriously. I love doing demos. I like having an audience, and it’s always packed at Your Horse Live. When you’ve got the audience hanging on every word you say, I like to come out with something outrageous and see what the reaction is! Oliver: Geoff makes it very easy doing demonstrations. We’re good friends more
than anything and have known each other a long time now. It’s good for our horses too – to educate the younger ones and get the older ones in front of a crowd with no pressure. There’s not much danger of us offending each other whatever happens. w w w.you r hor se .co.u k

Photo: Kit Houghton/Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials
Her partnership with ‘pocket rocket’ mare Headley Britannia brought international eventer Lucinda Fredericks wins at Badminton, Burghley, Kentucky and an Olympic silver medal. They’ll both be starring at this year’s Your Horse Live and here Lucinda tells us why she loves her sport, despite long days and hard work. My first horse was completely unsuitable. She was an unbroken, rising four-year-old Trakehner mare called Emma-lou. She was the most stubborn mare you’d ever meet but I adored her and she was my best friend. I had her for 24 years and taught her to count, to stand up on command – she was like a dog. Eventually I did Juniors and Young Riders with her. If you could ride her, you could ride anything. To be a successful event rider you need to be willing to sacrifice things. Not people, but things. And you need dedication and perseverance. It’s a tough lifestyle but you take the good with the bad, don’t you? I haven’t had the best time the last couple of years, for all sorts of reasons, but it’s the nice owners, nice friends and nice horses that keep you going. Most of my success has come from horses who other people don’t want – they can’t or don’t want to ride them, or don’t think they’re good enough. I’ve never actually had the luxury of choosing an event horse – they just seem to come my way! It took a lot of mental strength and discipline for me to get back and ride after my fall this spring [Lucinda had a rotational fall which resulted in a broken collarbone, six broken ribs
Lucinda Fredericks
Brit’s a star
and punctured lungs]. I haven’t had enough runs at the Read more about moment and I still Headley Britannia feel rusty but it’s all on page 18 about focusing and getting on with it. The best thing about this job is the good days when the team – your family, owners and horses – are happy. We had a fabulous time at Express Eventing recently [Lucinda won on Headley Britannia] – ok it wasn’t Badminton or Burghley but it was a really special day that gave a lot of people pleasure.
Lucinda and Brit relax at home
Looking to the future Of course it would be nice to get to Rio. But it depends on my horses and on a lot of things at the moment. My luck needs to change a little bit. My goal at the moment is to stay mentally and physically in one piece, so I can get back and focus on doing what I’m good at, and continue to enjoy it. I think that’s a pretty good aim. All Ellie [Lucinda’s 10-year-old daughter] wants to do is gallop and jump – there’s not much style involved! She’s got a very cool little 17-year-old pony called Minky and has done a couple of events on him. We’re going to go hunter trialling together on Brit and Minky – I can’t wait! Ellie is very keen to compete Brit and I’ll be very happy for her to do that for a season. When Ellie’s 11, Brit will be 22 – I think that’ll be perfect. I don’t have any magic secret for juggling work and being a mum. If there are any horsey mums out there that do, let me know! My days are long.
Photo: Emma Charlton
Lets hear it for the girls!
Ellie comes back from school and I try to help her with her homework – not that I can do it but I supervise! Then I sort Ellie’s supper out, followed by bath, story, bed and then my work starts… going through all the messages and emails. I work into the night every night. I’ve always worked very hard throughout my whole career, but when you get to my age and you’re having to do work that you don’t know about, that’s tricky. I’ll be nervous before Your Horse Live – gosh yes! But once I get into it I’ll be fine – I can’t wait!

It’s a family affair for dressage superstars, the Eilbergs We’re thrilled to welcome dressage dynasty Ferdi, Michael and Maria Eilberg to Your Horse Live. We catch up with Michael as he talks about bringing back bronze on his British team debut, what it’s like to be trained by your dad, and the horse for whom he thinks the sky’s the limit. I messed around on ponies and did Pony Club as a child. I did a little bit of crosscountry – nothing too fancy, just galloping about a bit and popping over logs – and then I focused on show jumping. I got a very nice pony who was too strong cross-country and she had a really good pop on her, so I started BSJA. I always went to the shows with my mum, and my dad would go with Maria. My dad and I never used to click that well when he helped me with the show jumping. He always used to get annoyed because I was too relaxed – and I used to get annoyed because I thought he was too strict. But when I started doing dressage obviously that’s his forte, and I needed somebody to listen to. Also I grew up a bit around that time as well – I think I started dressage when I was 21. We work really well together now. I didn’t know what to Michael riding Woodlander Wavavoom

expect at the Europeans, but I really enjoyed it. It was my first time on the British team and my horse [Half Moon Delphi] coped really well. I pulled off a few good tests so it was a great trip for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. When everyone suddenly started clapping during my Freestyle I was like, what’s going on? Because obviously it’s a massive crowd and it was really very loud! At first I thought ‘oh no, she [Half Moon Delphi] is going to get worried’, but she didn’t mind one little bit, she just kept to the rhythm of the beat and just kept passaging and piaffing all the way down the centre line – it was great.
Training tricks It’s frustrating when you have scoring like I had [at the Europeans] when I had a judge who was 10% lower than the others. It cost us a lot – if he’d been anywhere near the others, it was a chance to win gold. But that’s dressage. I like a horse who has a lot of will to work. They’re so much easier to train. It’s the same with a person isn’t it? It’s so much easier to train someone who’s enthusiastic than someone who’s got a miserable expression on their face and gives you very little feedback! Each horse is an individual. Some can be challenged and it brings them on and they thrive off it, other horses have to be taken a little bit more quietly. You have to listen to the feedback you’re getting from the horse and be prepared to be flexible –
no two horses are the same. I have to force myself to treat Woodlander Farouche like any other horse – tell myself not to be too precious! I’m so aware that she’s this incredible horse, all the time I’m trying not to mess anything up! The potential she has is just fantastic and her capability is limitless. I love teaching. I’m having a bit of a problem at the moment actually, trying to organise everything around that. Mum told me the other day: “Be careful you don’t load yourself up with so many lessons that you don’t have time to ride!” Teaching is very similar to teaching the horses in a way – it’s just trying to convey something in words rather than actions. You have to work hard, but you mustn’t work yourself empty. I try to have one easier day in the week, to just catch up on things a little bit. I might get time to go and play some golf, or I might go and look at horses, or do a bit of teaching somewhere, but it’s always a bit of a different day. We’re hoping to bring some exciting horses to Your Horse Live. It’s always a bit nerve-racking to start with – getting those first few sentences out – but when I get into it and start to relax, it’s fine. I’m just hoping the audience isn’t going to boo me off!

Here to inspire and entertain you From classical riding to cross-country technique, some exciting new names (and some more familiar ones) will be demonstrating in the Countrywide Arena 2
From problem horses to perfection Having a horse with perfect manners is something we all aspire to, but surprisingly few of us achieve. Problems such as not standing still to be mounted, refusing to load or being phobic about being clipped can be at best time-consuming and irritating, and at worst dangerous. Kelly Marks is the founder of Intelligent Horsemanship, an organisation dedicated to bringing together the best horsemanship ideas from around the world, in an effort to promote understanding and fair treatment of horses. A successful show jumper as a teenager, Kelly later became a top female jockey, and more recently has had success in BHS TREC and hunter showing. Kelly was mentored by Monty Roberts and is renowned for her understanding of horse psychology and her sympathetic, practical methods of improving human and equine communication.
What you can expect to see It’s not just Kelly who’ll be in the hot seat at Your Horse Live – she’ll be bringing four of her students (all professional horse trainers in their own right) who will be going head-to-head in a bid to take home the Intelligent Horsemanship Challenge Trophy. Kelly will be offering advice and guidance as her students work to address the problem

behaviours of several different horses in the short time each demonstration allows. They’ll be looking at three common problem areas – how to load a reluctant horse, how to clip a nervous horse and how to teach your horse to stand still while you mount. “It’s a real challenge, but very exciting!” enthuses Kelly. “We’re going to be using our demonstrations at Your Horse Live to decide the winner of the Intelligent Horsemanship Challenge Trophy. The trainers will go head-to-head in three separate rounds, working to help real life ‘problem’ horses overcome their issues. It’s a fun way for the audience to see my methods, and for me to show how anyone can use my techniques to improve their horse’s behaviour. “We’ll be asking the audience to get involved and judge which trainer gets to take the trophy home. They’ll need to take into account timing, technique and tactics, judge the horse’s stress levels and learning capacity, analyse the trainers’ strategies and emotional control, and finally vote for who did the best job for the horse. It’s going to be fun, fascinating – and very competitive!”
Jay’s here to help you improve your jumping He’s our very own Your Horse Training Academy superstar, a highly successful eventer, show jumper and producer of young horses – and one of the nicest people in the business to boot! We’re delighted to welcome Jay Halim to Your Horse Live for the very first time this year. Having initially worked as a rider for Graham and Tina Fletcher, Jay began producing young event horses to sell, before setting up his own yard. Since then he’s competed and been placed at many international events including Barbury, Blenheim and Bramham.

An ex-jockey, Mark is a leading expert in riding across country and much in demand as a trainer – one of his pupils, Yasmin Ingham, brought home double gold at the European Pony Championships earlier this year. He’s also famous for his team chasing exploits with the ‘Bit-less not brain-less’ team. Mark will show how to learn the skills needed to ride cross-country safely, in the controlled environment of an arena.

From racehorse to riding horse
What you can expect to see Karen will be working with a number of ex-racers of varying ages and experiences, to show how a logical, progressive education can equip ex-racers for a successful career away from the track. Common problems such as lack of balance and rushing fences will be discussed and simple, practical exercises to improve an ex-racers way of going shown.
He’ll be working with several Your Horse readers and their horses (all new to him) to show how to build rider-and-horse confidence over jumps. In particular, he’ll be focusing on how to develop accuracy over cross-country type fences, building up to jumping some narrow ‘skinnies’ with style, leaving both rider and horse happy and confident.

Classical equitation made simple If you dream of riding with poise, balance and in harmony with your horse, and are looking for a method of training that’s humane and logical, then classical riding might be for you. Heather Moffett, one of the world’s leading classical riding experts, will explain the principles behind classical equitation and show how they should underpin correct ridden work, whatever the level. She has a personal passion for Iberian horses, but firmly believes that correct classical training can transform almost any

She’s a legend in her own lifetime and a perennially popular demonstrator thanks to her unrivalled knowledge and practical, approachable manner. We’re thrilled to welcome Karen Dixon back to Your Horse Live this year. Karen, who rode for Team GB at four Olympic Games and won silver in Seoul in 1988 on Get Smart, admits to having a soft spot for Thoroughbreds, and has taken several ex-racers on to successful new careers.

Olympians to keen novices, to expose position weaknesses and show how addressing them can have a positive impact on the horse’s performance. “I love coming to Your Horse Live!” says Russell. “The audience is so enthusiastic and willing to learn. “I want to give everyone, regardless of the level they’re working at, some practical ways to improve their position and positively influence their horse’s way of going.”
Larry Bensusan
Behaviour problems sorted ‘Problem horse or problem owner?’ asks behaviour expert Larry Bensusan. Larry returns to shed light on the life experiences that can shape a horse’s personality, and in some cases lead to him developing behavioural problems. He’ll explain how the horse views the world around him, and explore how environment and diet can affect his character. He’ll also look at the influence of the owner and ask if a nervous rider can produce a nervous horse. Find out if you’re in harmony with your horse or are being bullied by him, and how you can bond with your horse again after the relationship has broken down. Larry’s observational and researchbased work brings a commonsense approach to this fascinating subject.
