Man’s Best Friend
Welcome I
Issue 29 | SUMMER 2021
f there’s one thing we’ve learned over the past year, at this slower pace, it’s to value those everyday joys and the things we find closer to home. And as summer arrives, there’s so much to enjoy, whether it’s a tranquil solo hack on a lovely light evening or dining al fresco with family and friends in the garden. Kathy Carter has lots of ways to make the most of a staycation summer in the UK from Page 54, including exploring beautiful coast and country on foot, getting back to nature – and popping into one or two of our great British pubs! And don’t forget to take your faithful companion, the one who’s been by your side through lockdown, daily walks and even isolation – your dog, of course! Why not make this summer a celebration of man’s (and woman’s) best friend with our guide from Page 64? Keeping everything closer to home means we can also take time to really enjoy any outdoor space we have and interior designer Zoe Hewett has plenty of ideas for “taking the inside outdoors” to create a relaxing, beautiful space with plenty of home comforts. See Your Country Property from Page 18. Of course, it’s not all about relaxation for us horsey folk! As always, our beloved equines will be keeping us busy this season, too – Kathy Carter looks at how to keep our paddocks in tip-top condition in Build It from Page 112, while for Team YHC it’s time to make hay and hit those hills in Yard Talk (Page 88). Mary and Emily King are certainly not letting the grass grow under their feet as they are back in the swing of eventing, and we catch up with them, King Louis and the rest of the team on Page 76. Sounds like a packed summer ahead, so make sure you take a break – and enjoy Your Horse and Country Magazine at the same time!

T
he reopening of our favourite retail stores earlier this year was such a welcome event. It is so nice to be able to support our local and specialist retailers after a difficult time for them recently, and also to start thinking about our personal style (and even reinventing ourselves!). Who would have thought this time last year that no one would be buying party dresses, and that loungewear would become such a hot commodity? Tracksuit bottoms (purchases of which increased by around 80% last year), yoga pants, sloppy sweatshirts and cosy socks were some of the best-selling items of 2020, followed by athleisure (the slightly smarter and more smug big sister of loungewear), and pyjamas.
FURLOUGH FASHION AND THE ZOOM OUTFIT If you were particularly savvy during lockdown, you will have capitalised on both your old working wardrobe and your new loungewear attire, wearing a classic Zoom outfit of smart workwear on your top half,
and jammies on your bottom half! But now life is returning somewhat to normal, are you itching to shed your drab, shapeless loungewear and return to a world of colourful, trendy outfits once more? Or is there no going back for you, now you’ve discovered furlough fashion?
SUSTAINABILITY AWARENESS It has to be said that the current and much-needed era of sustainability awareness is likely to affect our clothing purchasing habits. We know that “fast fashion” is bad for the planet and commonly for the manufacturing workers, and the “pause button” that Covid-19 gave us has perhaps allowed us to rethink our spending. Could we really

blow our budgets on something frivolous and indulgent, in a time of post-worldwide crisis? Many of us have had a wake-up call as to what’s important in our lives. It seems as if lots of us are willing to adjust to owning fewer clothes as a result of this shift in focus. (Clothing rental sites and buying secondhand are now both very popular). But with this modern sensibility comes a rather charming and more traditional view of buying quality over quantity. Capsule wardrobes, seasonal essentials and investment purchases are surely the way forward, whether it is a gorgeous must-have handbag, or a really comfy and well-made set of lounging pyjamas. Here’s a round-up of some of the latest trends in clothes and accessories.

a reality for many people, so comfortable fabrics and indoor comfy dressing will likely be favoured as part of the new way of working. Clothing that’s too “show-offy” is often considered bad taste in times of crisis, so bold logos are likely on the way out (perhaps thankfully?). If you have a hot-bod and a party to attend, a backless dress is reportedly the way forward, if designers like Victoria Beckham are to be believed. It will certainly be nice to slip on a pair of heels and hug our friends, while rocking a “going-out-out” outfit.

Apparently, fashionistas are expecting a nod to the 70s and some nostalgic fashion choices this season. Think earth tones, relaxed denim silhouettes and even platform shoes and clogs. With sporting events restarting, it also is likely that athleisure and outdoor sports-casual wear will boom; it’s time to dig out your team colours! Playing on our health-conscious minds, antibacterial fabrics and finishes are sure to stay popular, now the manufacturers have perfected the processes. Working from home is still

We were glad to see the return of our favourite ‘non-essential’ shops – will a comeback for 90s scrunchies, below, get such a warm welcome?
As mentioned, buying quality over quantity is likely to be important for many of us, especially if we have less disposable income; so classic items with longevity, such as well-cut blazers, slip dresses, quality T-shirts and flattering jeans, are sure to be wardrobe staples this year.
to the ocean, with mermaid-tail patterns and bluey-hues, so follow their lead, and go nautical! And if you’re looking for something to add warmth of an evening, a large blanket or cape-style scarf, or a slimmer wool-based one with fringing, will definitely look the part.
BEAUTIFUL BAGS
HEAVENLY HAIR ACCESSORIES
Size-wise, it’s not all about downsizing your bag this year – medium-sized, leather carry-all bags are “in”, with sleek silhouettes and plain colours. Fashion bible Vogue advises that a curved shape is de rigeur. (Smaller “going out” bags for the evening are still on trend, especially in candy colours like pinks and powder blues – as are canvas beach bags; big enough to stuff all of your snacks and beach towels in). For those of us who really do like to downsize (and can pay for shopping with their phone!) cross-body phone cases and holders are popular, and frightfully convenient for those who wish to travel light.
We initially weren’t quite sure about this latest hair trend, but 90s scrunchies are back in fashion. This time they’re more classy though; a la Versace, organza, taffeta and silk textures are reportedly populating the shelves this summer, with jumbo versions making even more of a style statement. On the subject of hair, those practical “claw clips” that allow ladies to have easy half-up, half-down hairstyles
SULTRY SCARVES Silk headscarves are definitely “in”. They make such great accessories, whether you wear them on your head, tie them to your bag, or wear them as a top. They are a great way to add a pop of colour to any outfit, especially if you're timid about contrasting colours in your actual clothing pieces. This year, Burberry’s scarf collection is an ode
are also making a comeback, making it super-easy to clip and go of a morning.
SASSY SHOES As mentioned, platforms are reportedly back. Prada may be showcasing split-sole options and daring patterned colourways that go all the way down to the soles, but us country folk are perhaps more likely to stick with functional black and brown, or neutrals. Many designers are launching what can only be described as chunky-soled wellies, while others have dabbled with thigh high boots (to go with skirt suits) – but this could be a step too far for the country set, who need to walk the dog and muck out the horses in their long boots! Whatever your sartorial choices, remember to have fun with your fashion, and make the most of the items you own. Don’t just save them for a “rainy day”!
YOUR GO-TO LEGGINGS The Derby House Pro Denim Gel Knee Patch Riding Breeches could easily be mistaken as your favourite pair of jeans! Suitable for riding and out and about, these stretch denim breeches are packed with amazing features such as mid-rise waist with belt loops, reinforced silicone gel knee patches, shaped lycra calf panels, generous front pockets and rear pockets and shape-retaining stretch denim fabric. Breakthrough in equine allergen avoidance While much of the world only recently learned the health hazards of microscopic airborne particles, horses have been struggling with their impact for years - whether their owners know it or not! Allergic reactions that manifest as respiratory issues, skin problems, general malaise and poor performance start as tiny airborne particles that infiltrate, irritate and trigger inflammation inside the horse’s body. “Dust” is the innocent-sounding description of the conduit for mold, fungi, bacteria and other allergens that activate inflammation and unfortunately, most horses’ biggest source of nutrition, hay, is loaded with these allergens. This is true even in hay of good nutrient quality and that looks and smells untainted.
Breakthrough Equine nutritionist and digestive physiology expert Professor Meriel Moore-Colyer, PhD, is excited about recent findings regarding allergens that affect horses. As a graduate dean and professor at the Royal Agricultural University, Gloucestershire, she supervised a recent breakthrough study that evaluated almost 400 potential allergens from a blood sample.
Conducted by Samuel White, PhD candidate, MSc, BSc, the study included 12 equine subjects with Severe Equine Asthma, a condition at the most extreme end of the Equine Asthma Spectrum. Each was exposed to the same potential allergens in a controlled environment, and blood samples revealed which triggered a reaction represented by antigens. This was the largest scale allergen assessment in Severe Equine Asthma horses to date. The results established a wide range of previously unidentified allergens and highlighted fungi and mites as the main reactants. Pollen and latex were newly identified as a problem for horses, as they are for many people. This initial study established a sound platform for future diagnostics and crucially, it enables targeted allergen-avoidance regimes, which are the cornerstone to treatment.
Allergen Avoidance The results of White’s study and the fastevolving body of knowledge on allergens speak to the complexity of the subject. For example, it’s known that repeated exposure
to an allergen will cause a progressively more severe response, whether that’s coughing, wheezing or decreased capacity to use oxygen at lower levels of exertion. Scientists thrive on this research, but horse owners only need to know one thing regarding allergens. “Allergen avoidance is the cornerstone to effective prevention,” asserts Moore-Colyer. The easiest and most effective way to do that is using a Haygain Hay Steamer, using steam heated to over 100oc and injected evenly through hay in a thermally sealed chest, this process eliminates up to 99% of the dust, mold, fungi, bacteria and other allergens found in hay. Head to www.haygain.co.uk to find out more about the scientifically proven health benefits of Haygain’s Hay Steamers.

Should overseas investors buy in the UK? For the overseas buyer the UK property market has long been seen as a safe haven for investment that can provide great returns. For homes with sufficiently spacious gardens to add a swimming pool, contrary to popular belief, choices are not limited to postcard-sky blue. Perhaps you could take inspiration from more exotic destinations... If contrast is your thing then contemporary, architectural pools formed of moulded concrete cuboid shapes might appeal, or to be transported to Palm Springs opt for pastel pink and coral ice cream-toned tiles. There is even an emerging vogue for artist-painted murals in pool decor. Moorish architecture is the epitome of inside-outside living, with a central courtyard or riad a primary characteristic. Featuring lush planting around a central water fountain or pool, a key ingredient of this style is Zellij tiles, famed for their intricate geometric patterns that often incorporate stars. For a taste of Morocco in your own back garden, patterned outdoor (non-slip) floor tiles will do nicely, or for the full effect there is always the option to cover the entire interior of a pool with glass mosaic pattern. Maybe you prefer the idea of wild swimming, which has seen a resurgence
When space is limited it is time to get creative. Commonplace overseas, outdoor showers are highly underrated here on our meteorologically temperamental isle. Outdoor baths are also lesser-seen, unconventional certainly, and are anything but a poor man’s swimming pool. With a handy place for a book, a glass of something and ideally a good view there’s a decadence to an outdoor bath and a novelty factor that weathered natural won’t easily wear off. 2. From a feature to an avenue using large trees in your landscape Lines of fencing interrupting the view is just one reason large paddocks over a wide area are not always appealing to the eye. A green spaces expert shares his tips for enhancing your land by planting large trees, adding instant colour, form and character. “A quintessential part of the British landscape, trees have long been used to add definition around properties”, explains Marc Greenaway General manager of tree supply, plant and relocation specialist Civic Trees. One of the finest proponents of this was Lancelot 'Capability’ Brown, and Marc believes Brown’s reasons for using trees to frame the landscape and create a natural looking finish are still applicable today. Placement In parkland ‘clumps’ of trees can be planted to screen an undesirable view, or direct the eye to a more favourable one. Trees are a great way to soften the boundaries of a property too, creating the illusion that the land extends beyond the horizon. Large solitary specimens can be a feature in their own right, enhancing the landscape by breaking up expansive space, and providing a shady spot to stop whilst out riding, or sheltering livestock in paddocks.
“Avenues are also popular as a visual statement,” Marc says. “They can be used anywhere to create a destination in the landscape. I’d recommend an ornamental finish using flowering Cherries, or Hornbeam for a more natural look. In some instances a less formal approach is more appropriate, like a meandering, tree-lined driveway offering tantalising glimpses of a view at intervals before culminating in the ‘big reveal’.”
Civic Trees are an authority in planting large, semi-mature specimens (typically over four-metres tall), sourced from specialist growers in the UK and Europe that produce trees for transplant at large sizes.
Consideration When undertaking planting projects in parkland the main areas of consideration are the topography of the land and species selection.
Meet the team: Marc Greenaway General Manager Civic Trees
The shape of the land guides the eye around the landscape and influences which planting finishes will look best. Marc adds: “To work out which species will thrive look at the surrounding landscape.
Michael Jose Sales Manager Civic Trees
Most trees do well in any soil, but some perform better than others and the tree types growing locally are a good indication. Sites that are particularly exposed will need extra thought however, particularly if the wind is coming from the sea and carrying salt. In these instances the way that the trees are planted and secured are crucial.”

POLARIS RANGER EV: THE UTV WITH AN ELECTRIC EDGE
Efficiency is the name of the game when it comes to managing a farm and barn chores, and that’s exactly why a utility vehicle is a great option to give you a helping hand. Take a closer look at Polaris’ unmatched electric utility vehicle - the Polaris Ranger EV – that pairs the off-road capabilities of the world’s bestselling UTV, with the clean and gentle operation of an electric vehicle. When a heavy tractor isn’t required, but you still need to transport heavy tools, feed or equipment, pull trailers, or even just move around on challenging terrain with the option of taking a passenger, the Ranger EV is the perfect workhorse for the job at hand. Being completely electric, the Ranger EV gives you a clean ride with no exhaust fumes, as well as keeping disturbance to a minimum thanks to its whisper-quiet engine noise. It’s propelled by a single 48-volt, high-efficiency AC-induction motor and needs little maintenance due to its direct drive system with low-noise transmission. Charging from a standard domestic plug, the Ranger EV offers a usable and practical driving range in even the most demanding work environments.
It’s not just the electric advantages that make the Ranger EV so versatile. As standard, the EV features 12-inch turf tyres and VersaTrac Turf mode, which unlocks the rear-axle differential and allows it to distribute power to the two rear wheels as needed. This results in easier, tighter turns that minimise the impact and damage on the surface below, including the avoidance of tearing up grass. With its small 72-inch wheelbase and nimble handling, the Ranger EV can fit through tight gates and can be easily stored in a garage or barn. High speed mode, maximum range mode and low speed mode are all selected at the touch of button: High speed mode can be used for most trail-riding conditions providing maximum speed, whilst maximum range mode can be used to operate the vehicle over a greater distance or longer time periods by restricting the speed and torque. Low speed mode enables maximum torque for towing, hauling heavy loads or
manoeuvring over difficult obstacles. The Polaris Ranger EV has a useful cargo bed with a quick and easy tilt function operated with a one-click lever, making off-loading of heavy items like tools, horse feed or riding equipment, much easier. What’s more, the EV boasts an impressive 454kg payload capacity in addition to a 680kg towing capacity, making it the most capable battery electric side-by-side in its class. The Macpherson Strut front suspension and Dual A-Arm independent rear suspension offers 9-inches (22.9cm) of suspension travel, paired with 10-inches (25.4cm) of ground clearance for a smooth and comfortable ride on any terrain. If you’re riding on rough ground, the Ranger EV has on-demand allwheel drive, so all four wheels engage automatically when the vehicle needs more forward traction, reverting back to two-wheel drive when it doesn’t for ultimate range and power management.
EV
When it comes to all-day use and comfort, the Ranger EV has this covered too. Designed with carefully thoughtout seating ergonomics including optimised seat height and foot clearance, the Ranger EV allows for easy entry and exit – perfect for quick jobs like opening and closing gates. The Ranger’s comfort can be tailored to suit with adjustable tilt steering too. Featuring updated split seating arrangement for two people, as well as useful in-cab storage and everyday practicalities including cup holders, a glovebox and a 12V power supply, and there’s never any need for range anxiety thanks to the clear and simple battery life gauge. Polaris is proud to offer an extensive range of accessories for endless customisation options to the Polaris vehicle lineup. From weather protection, style, performance, winches, tyres/tracks, ploughs, audio, storage and much more – there are plenty of solutions and upgrades to choose from. In addition to parts and accessories for permanent installation, Polaris Lock & Ride system accessories are available for most of models in the range – including the Ranger and Sportsman. The revolutionary system allows fitment and removal in a matter of minutes, meaning that accessories can easily be added or removed as and when they’re needed.

Five ways to get out there and enjoy the UK this summer – and feel good too, says Kathy Carter
*
1. WALK ON THE WILD SIDE
Time in nature, as long as we feel safe, has been proven to be beneficial to health. It’s an antidote for stress, can lower blood pressure, improves mood, and even enhances immune system function! Additionally, according to Harvard Medical School, our vitamin D levels rise in sunlight, which could help our bodies fight certain conditions, from osteoporosis and cancer to depression and heart attacks. So, what’s not to like about the great outdoors? Naturally, the mental health charity MIND recommends spending time in nature, suggesting ideas like growing or picking food, for example at a fruit farm; taking activities outdoors, such as eating meals outside or watching
the stars; and connecting with animals, for example by hanging a bird feeder outside a window, or birdwatching. A fabulous way to enjoy time in nature, especially if you can find a nice pub enroute, is to arrange a nature walk. Naturally these are popular with families, but if you are needing some me-time, a solitary nature walk is a great way to recalibrate. Our favourite walks include the Norfolk Coastal Path, from Sheringham to Cromer – this takes in the Beeston Bump, a former WWII listening station that’s now a modest, 207-foot hill overlooking Sheringham. You will finish at the Cromer pier, where you will find traditional end-of-the-pier shows, and a rewarding ice cream. (Norfolk Trails has a downloadable map at the website: tinyurl.com/

NORFOLKTRAILS) If you fancy something less flat, another favourite is the route from Stroud to Dursley along the Cotswold Way – it’s a slightly more challenging hike, taking in some amazing views of Gloucestershire such as the Nympsfield Long Barrow near Frocester, with spectacular views over the Severn Valley. (Cotswold Trekker has details at the website: tinyurl.com/StroudDursley) Wherever you plan to go in the UK, contact the region’s local tourist board for details of local walking routes.

2. TAKE A STAYCATION
We all know that foreign travel is more complex currently – so here are five reasons why a UK staycation is the best way to grab some quality time this summer: n No foreign travel hassle. You don’t have the worry of passports, flights, airports,
administration, taxis or airport parking. You also don’t have to suffer the stress of waiting for a flight with a gang of tired, hungry, bored children! Stock your car with tech, snacks, toys and window sunshades, and you will find the “getting to your destination” stage much less stressful. Once there, you can settle into your new abode without waiting to collect baggage, battle jet lag and transfer to another destination. n You can speak the lingo! The dialects may differ though, so brush up on your local phrases. (Have a butchers and a blinding time, remember you’re not born in a barn, and pet, stop ya nebbin at the neighbouring homes!) n Appreciation of your home country. You can really make the most of what the UK has to offer, from Yorkshire’s three national parks, the Cotswolds’ rolling hills and u

Time spent in nature, new experiences and a change of scenery are all linked to enhanced happiness, say researchers
Devon’s craggy coves and cream teas, to the Lake District’s patchwork of lakes and valleys and our cities’ cosmopolitan theatres and galleries. You’re never more than around eighty miles from the nearest piece of coastline. This means you can grab your bucket and spade, and be at the seaside within a morning. With 7,700 miles of British coastline to explore, you will be hard pushed to choose from locations that suit your needs. Rhossili Bay in the Gower Peninsula in Wales and Watergate Bay in Cornwall are just two of our favourites. You can enjoy a British pub lunch. After the recent crushing blows to the hospitality industry, what could be better than spending your hard-earned cash in one of the UK’s 45,000 great British boozers? Combine your pint, soup and a sandwich with a walk through the local region, keep your fingers crossed for a sunny day, and you have most of the ingredients for a day of fun.

that mean the most to you is a high priority. Fortunately, the tourist industry is waiting with open arms for visitors to return to the many UK-based attractions. From bus and boat tours and castle visits to train journeys and city excursions, there’s a day out in your region waiting to be explored. (An interesting twist to your day out is to try the “Don’t Get Got” party game, whereby you choose in advance six secret missions to complete, from getting a fellow player to correct you on a movie quote, compliment your hair-do, or high five you. It’s a fun way to create a bonding experience, and kids love it.)

3. GET OUT AS A FAMILY
Lockdown affected us all so differently. Some of us were separated from our families, while some were forced into close proximity with them for longer than we’d choose. Of course, many of us lost loved ones. Whatever your situation, it’s likely that spending time with the people
4. BOOST MENTAL HEALTH
As we’ve said, time in nature is beneficial to health. We also know the benefits of exercise. In addition, a change of scenery or routine has been found to also improve mood. Researchers from New York University and the University of Miami found that having new, diverse experiences every day is linked to positive emotions and enhanced happiness. The hippocampus, the part of the brain involved in memory formation, is also sensitive to the novelty of “spatial environments” – people who explore new things daily reportedly have more synchronicity in that region of the brain, and therefore more flexibility of mood.
5. PRACTICE ALTRUISM
With many people having saved some money in the course of the pandemic, now’s a good time to support local and national businesses by paying for their products and services. And if you are more of a stay local person, donating to charity, volunteering or undertaking random acts of kindness also make us feel good! An act of kindness can improve our own feelings of confidence, control, happiness and optimism, as well as contributing to a more positive community and helping others. HOW TO LIFT YOUR SPIRITS THIS SUMMER
1. Practice gratitude. Write down three things you’re grateful for daily. It may help you feel more optimistic and satisfied. 2. Meditate daily. It allows the nervous system to decelerate and releases the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, helping to regulate mood.
3. Listen to music. It regulates emotion and mood, provides nostalgia, gets us dancing, and connects families. What’s not to like! 4. Set specific goals. From recycling to eating more healthily in the week, there’s always room for a goal. It helps us experience
a sense of personal happiness and achievement when goals are met. 5. Journal. Not just for teenagers, journaling is a popular and proven way to enhance mood. It’s also great for clarifying your thoughts and solving problems. 6. Smile more. It also releases the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, increasing our feelings of happiness.

Sponsor an animal for only £1 a week! A perfect gift for an animal lover!
Oak Tree’s history began in London on June 9th, 1909, when animal welfare pioneer Francis Cox launched The National Equine Defence League (NEDL) to improve the plight of the 72,000 pit ponies whose lives were spent hauling heavy coal carts in Britain’s coal mines. Following extensive advocacy work by their founders, alongside others, the 1912 Coal Mines Act became the first legislation to incorporate the welfare of pit ponies into Law. Throughout their 112 year history, they have been actively involved in speaking up to improve the welfare of animals both locally and nationally on a variety of horse-related issues. Today, Oak Tree continues to promote animal welfare and responsible pet ownership providing homing services for equines, dogs and cats, and proactive community support, advice and education. Each and every equine at Oak Tree has their own story and character. They rehome a range of horses and ponies that suit different needs and homes, from horses purely for
companionship to ridden ponies with bags of potential. Their Equine Team recently broke in to ride four ponies that have gone on to be adopted into fantastic homes. The Charity prides itself on the part it plays in the community, frequently running campaigns - the most recent of which was a week-long multi-media campaign highlighting the importance of road safety. Weight clinics, using their donated weighbridge, along with help and advice from the Equine Team, help owners keep their horse/pony in tiptop condition.
Most of the animals they care for find a happy future away from Oak Tree, but occasionally they come across an individual who finds themselves remaining in their care for a long time. These animals are included in their Animal Sponsorship Scheme and they encourage people to sponsor a particular animal to help offset the cost of their care. All details are available on their website www.oaktreeanimals.org.uk/Getinvolved/animalsponsorship.html.
Oak Tree likes to get the younger members of the community involved through their Pony Fun Days whereby the children learn how to care for a pony with hands-on experience and fun activities.
Staff and volunteers are looking forward to welcoming people back to their site in Wetheral after the enforced lockdown. Several of their paddocks are in public areas and, while enjoying a cup of tea and homemade cake in their Tearoom, visitors can watch ponies and donkeys grazing not far away.
To support this fantastic charity and for further details about Oak Tree’s work, visit www.oaktreeanimals.org.uk

Joanna Palmer, Equine Nutritionist at Allen & Page Quality Horse Feeds
Low calorie feeds With spring upon us and grass growing abundantly, Joanna Palmer, nutritionist for Allen & Page Quality Horse Feeds looks at the importance of low calorie diets for our native horses and ponies and other good doers this spring.
Feed a low calorie, balanced diet Good doers can often exceed their calorie needs from grazing alone, particularly at this time of year. However, a forage only diet is unlikely to supply your horse with sufficient quantities of vitamins and minerals to provide a balanced diet and a supplementary bucket feed will be necessary. Choosing a low calorie balanced feed such as Fast Fibre which has a digestible energy level of 8MJ/ kg is ideal for all good doers. Similarly, Veteran Light has the same low calorie level and is specifically formulated to meet the nutritional needs for optimum health in older horses and ponies who are holding weight well in the later years. When fed at the minimum recommended amounts according to your horse’s size and work load, Fast Fibre and Veteran Light will provide all the vitamins and minerals and quality protein needed for a balanced diet, without too many additional calories.
Limit starch and sugars in the diet It is well recognised that laminitis is more common in overweight horses and ponies and those that gain weight easily. Alongside a calorie controlled diet, if your horse or pony is at risk of laminitis he should only be fed a feed which has a combined starch and sugar level of 10% or less and is ideally free from whole cereal grains and molasses. For these reasons, Fast Fibre and Veteran Light are both ideal for laminitics. As well as being fully balanced with vitamins and minerals, they are high in fibre and very low in starch and sugar, making them more natural for the horse than traditional cereal based mixes and cubes. Not only can a high starch diet cause fizzy and excitable
behaviour, but it is also more difficult to digest and can make the horse more susceptible to developing laminitis or colic. lnstead of starchy cereals, Fast Fibre and Veteran Light use fibre and oil as energy sources.
Encourage calorie use and assess condition. Just like humans, a horse will gain weight if his calorie intake exceeds his calorie usage. Alongside a low calorie diet, increasing your horse’s exercise and only rugging when absolutely necessary will help prevent unwanted weight gain. Regularly using a weightape and body condition scoring your horse will help you to keep an eye on his weight and condition. Alongside restricted grazing, regular exercise and weight assessments, feeding a low calorie balanced feed will help to keep your horse’s waistline in check and also ensure he receives the essential nutrition he requires for all round good health and performance. For further advice on feeding low calorie feeds contact our friendly, award winning nutrition team on 01362 822 902, email us at helpline@allenandpage.co.uk or visit our website

SUMMER CONSIDERATIONS FOR DOGS Dogs can succumb to heatstroke very easily; to keep them cool, provide access to clean water and carry a doggy water bottle on walks. You could try making cool treats by making ice cubes with your dog’s favourite food inside, or stuff a food toy with treats, and pop it in the freezer – a great summertime cooler! (If you suspect your dog is being adversely affected by the heat, move them to a cool place and wet their coat with cool water, and contact your vet). Never leave your dog in a car in the hotter months.
MAN’S BEST FRIEND
Your dog will love showing you their skill on a dog agility course; carry a water bottle on walks to help your dog stay cool, left
CAPTURING PRECIOUS MOMENTS
It’s also a good idea to walk your dog at the cooler times of the day, as their paw pads can burn on hot pavements – getting out nice and early is also a great time to enjoy the warmer months while it is quieter! Coat grooming is of course key to keep on top of doggy tangles, which can make the dog hot in the warmer months – you may need to book more canine haircuts, if you have a breed of dog that requires it. Beach visits on dog-friendly beaches can be really fun days out at locations where it’s breezier (see: ‘Visiting dog friendly places’); but do be wary of tide times at the beach, and take fresh water.

Have you thought about having your dog captured in a beautiful portrait? The concept, of course, isn’t new; most of the world’s famous paintings of animals were created when photography either hadn’t been invented, or was limited and very expensive; meaning the artist’s observation skills were key. Just take George Stubbs’ imposing 18thcentury painting Whistlejacket, which hangs in the National Gallery, or Jan Dasveldt’s 19th-century Siberian Greyhound, which hangs in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum; both fine examples of attention to detail, such as the animal’s bone structure and individual hairs. Could you picture your own pet immortalised on canvas? While we can all take a photo of our dog, having its likeness painted is something altogether more special. Portrait artist Lucy Milne’s passion is drawing her subjects, which include people and animals, from real life. “Although my camera is a vital tool, I believe there is no better way to understand what an animal looks like than to draw it from life and get a feel for the its character,” Lucy explains. “I love it when the portrait
STAYING HEALTHY WITH FLEA AND WORM TREATMENT
With most products, you de-flea and worm your pet once a month. Let’s start with fleas – the most common signs of fleas in dogs are excessive itching or biting the skin, hair loss and visible eggs on the dog’s coat. You can buy de-flea tablets and drops, as well as collars and sprays (for the animal and your home) from your vet or pet store. In terms of worming treatments, worms are parasites that live within your pet’s intestines. Lungworms, tapeworms and hookworms can grow rapidly when dogs eat something containing the parasite; symptoms can include diarrhoea or vomiting, lethargy or unusual tiredness and weight loss. Injection, tablets or spot-on treatments are just a handful of options you could choose when looking into worming for dogs; ask your vet for details.

(Avoid grapes, raisins, onions and chocolate, which can be toxic to dogs.)
VISITING DOG-FRIENDLY PLACES Travelling with your dog is actually less restrictive than you may imagine. From glamping pods and holiday cottages to dog-friendly beaches, there’s lots of fun to
be had with your faithful friend in tow this summer. If you’re heading to the Scottish Highlands, you may for example like to hire a motorhome that’s especially set up to be dog-friendly. Rover Rentals’ dogfriendly motorhomes boast elements like easy-brush fabrics, dog beds, splashsafe water bowls and a fabric travelling cage, for the odd occasions when your pet may be left. Visit roverrentals. co.uk and plan your adventure. For something different, why not try one of the growing number of dog leisure swimming pools that are now available? Canine Dip and Dive Barkway in Hertfordshire, for example, boasts an outdoor 32ft swimming pool with a floating ramp. (Owners are not currently allowed in the pools). The website dogfriendly.co.uk has lots of inspiration for days out, and offers membership. n

Managing fibre intake this Summer for problem horses
We have talked in a previous article about the constant quest your horse is on, to consume enough fibre throughout the day. We also know that different fibre sources contain varying amounts of fibre, carbohydrates, and protein. So how do we ensure, that problem horses such as those prone to laminitis, those suffering from EMS or those who are very good doers are receiving enough fibre to maintain digestive tract health, without risking their health? Particularly in the Summer months when grazing may have to be restricted?
devonhaylage.co.uk 01404 813100
Claire Burrow
Because of the known risks of too much rich grass for problem horses, many such horses and ponies are turned out onto short grass, strip grazed or wear a muzzle. These practises may prevent the horse from suffering a laminitis attack or from gaining too much weight, but are they receiving adequate amounts of dry matter to provide sufficient fibre for the gut? Because of horses’ innate drive to seek adequate amounts of fibre, if no other fibre source is provided in the circumstances mentioned above, then they will be forced to try and obtain their required dry matter intake from the available grass alone. This short over grazed grass will contain little fibre per mouthful but potentially quite a bit of sugar compared to longer, more mature ‘older’ grass that has tougher stems containing lots of fibre. Horses grazing on very short grass have been found to take more mouthfuls per minute and graze for extended periods of time than those on longer more mature grass. The horse’s appetite for adequate fibre intake will be met more easily by eating mature grass, which also tastes less
sweet than short, deterring the temptation to overeat. It can be thought of as a person presented with a bag of sweets or a plate of vegetables. You will probably eat the sweets more quickly, but your hunger would not be satisfied for long, causing you to go back and eat more sweets. The solution, if it is not possible to graze on long fibrous old pasture, is to always offer a nutritionally suitable alternative forage source all year round alongside restricted grazing. Hay can vary enormously in nutritional quality, especially in sugar levels as was evident in the 2020 hay harvest. At Devon Haylage, we heard from many horse owners who discovered after testing their hay made in the hot dry Summer last year, that it contained dangerous levels of sugar for their horse and have resorted to using our haylage which has consistent and known, low levels of sugar. Haylage is often the safer option for sugar sensitive horses because residual sugar contained in the grass after cutting, is broken down by bacteria and used as an energy
source as they replicate. In hay, this doesn’t happen. We produce four different types of haylage, each with a slightly different nutritional profile but comparable to hay in fibre and energy levels, so you can select the best type for your horse and situation to provide a safe, additional fibre source alongside restricted grazing. Another benefit of providing haylage all year round both in the stable and in the field when grass intake is controlled, is that we prevent it from being a novelty when forage feeding resumes in Winter or when stabled at times through the year. Haylage is often tastier and more appealing than hay, so when haylage is offered sporadically, the horse may eat more than they would than if it were available as part of the norm. By making haylage a normal part of your horse’s diet, overeating is less likely. Horses will self-regulate their dry mater consumption given the opportunity and so ensuring the fibre on offer is nutritionally suitable, we can help satisfy our horses fibre quest whilst controlling excess intake of energy and sugar.

KINGS: IT’S GREAT TO BE BACK Mary
W
ell, it has been great to start eventing again. The sun shone at Tweseldown, the going was perfect, and my horses were very well-behaved! Both Seamus and Cyrus jumped double clears finishing 6th and 7th respectively in the BE100. Portman was a different story, with my lorry Mary with Seamus registering -4C as we arrived – definitely at Tweseldown and, too cold for eventing! I had faults in the below, with Dobby showjumping but good dressage tests and at Bicton cross-country rounds. Then it was another cold but also wet day at Larkhill. Both Seamus and Cyrus were doing their first novice level event of on the way the year. Cyrus was in the who were in a lead after the dressage broken-down and showjumping, and lorry. In fact, it then went beautifully was friends of XC, clear but with some ours who had time penalties. But Bovington didn’t go according to plan, Then Seamus tripped up a step out of the starting off with picking up three extra horses water, which resulted in 20 penalties at the

following fence as he hadn’t time to regain his balance. So I put Bovington firmly behind me, and focused on my next event at Bicton! The sun shone at Bicton, and Helen West’s team had done a huge amount of work to produce a lovely cross-country course with good going. Cyrus, who had recovered quickly from his tummy ache, put in another solid novice level performance – good dressage, showjumped well but did have the first fence down, and felt lovely and confident cross country. But again it went a bit wrong for Seamus, due to no fault of his own. Before we left he got kicked above his knee and by the time I needed to prepare him for his dressage the swelling had increased, making it uncomfortable for him. So, annoyingly, I had to withdraw him – gosh, horses! Never mind, onwards and upwards. Luckily there are plenty more novice level events to get Seamus back in the groove!

obby is progressing well. He loves work, is naively brave, and has plenty of scope and power. In preparation for his first BE event – the BE90 Open at Bicton – I tried to educate him as best as I could at home, with the Covid restrictions preventing us from getting out to actual shows. I set up a 20m x 40m dressage arena, and sometimes worked Dobby inside the markers. He is a big horse and the arena felt VERY small to begin with, as it always does with young horses who haven’t yet learnt to wait and carry more weight on their hindquarters. But with practice – plenty of half halts, insisting he carried himself and didn’t plough on forward into the rein – his balance gradually improved. Plus his balance around the corners got better and better as he learnt to listen and respect my inside leg, and maintain correct length bend with a little bit more weight in my outside rein as he travelled around the corners. I ride the corners on a slightly shallower line initially, then as their balance improves ride deeper in the corners. Before the XC courses were allowed to open I used my imagination making spooky, cross countrytype fences in my arena – narrow fences
A SAD GOODBYE TO KIZZY On a very sad note, I had to have my beautiful homebred five-year-old grey mare Kizzy put to sleep. It was devastating, and such a waste of a beautiful, well-bred, talented horse. She started to become intermittently unlevel this year and X-rays revealed cysts within her navicular bone, which sadly are untreatable. With the dry weather continuing I’ve finished rolling my fields (thanks to my Logic Manufacturing Limited Ballast roller), but we do need some rain and warm weather to help the grass to grow.

He was jumping well at home and once the restrictions were lifted I took him showjump schooling to two different venues (Chard and Bicton), plus XC schooling three times (Pontispool twice and Stockland Lovell). All the training paid off as he was such

I had a senior moment at the end of the course and jumped the novice penultimate fence, rather than the 90cm one – whoops – so got eliminated! But Dobs, despite being rather babyish and green, was so willing – I was thrilled with him.

ere at Team King we feel incredibly lucky to have the season under way, considering the further lockdown implications that the country was facing in March. Firstly, I must say a huge thank you to Ellie Forrest who has been my head girl for the last two years, her dedication to the horses has been exemplary. This is a team sport and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a staunch supporter. We wish Ellie the best of luck in her future endeavours at Zebra Products and luckily she isn’t moving too far away! Sienna Morgan-Elles has taken over the reins as yard manager and is doing an absolutely brilliant job, she is very knowledgable with an incredible work ethic so we are very lucky to have her as part of the team. The horses have now all been out competing; whether that be affiliated or unaffiliated for the younger ones. Unfortunately, I broke my hand at the end of April so the horses have had to miss a couple of runs.
AND IN OTHER NEWS... I love a challenge and have started training for the London Marathon, which is on October 3. I’m not really a runner but just felt I wanted to strike “run a marathon” off my bucket list! I wanted to run for a children’s charity and have been accepted for the Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) team. I’ve set up a JustGiving page (www.justgiving. com/fundraising/marykingmarathon) and would appreciate any donations to help me reach my target!

LANGFORD TAKE THE BISCUIT My partner Sam kindly rode Hobby for me at Kelsall Hill (while I was out of action with my broken hand), but unfortunately he had a bad fall. Sam came out the worst of the two and was airlifted to the Critical Care Unit in Aintree Hospital, but we are hopeful everything will mend. Luckily Hobby was unharmed. We’ve been thinking long and hard about what the best plan is for dear Hobby. He has given me some incredible rides across country and given us all some wonderful memories, but sadly he is not the top 5* horse we had hoped for. In our sport, safety and horse welfare is paramount and we feel it is the best decision to step him down and allow him to be competed by a different rider at a lower level. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in the Hobnob syndicate for their unbelievable support; your support in the initial crowdfunding stage was truly overwhelming and your continued enthusiasm and encouragement has made the Hobnob syndicate a pleasure to ride for.

VALMY BIATS Val, pictured above at Weston Park, is very happy that the season is under way and is most certainly lapping up the extra attention of being my top horse at the moment. Our first outing together was Oasby Horse Trials (April 2-4), where he had a good steady double clear in the OI to finish 10th. Following that, we headed to Weston Park (April 10) for the Advanced, which was only our second run at this level together. He was a total star – he did a lovely and muchimproved advanced test for a score of 30 and then posted a foot-perfect double clear in the mud, with the handbrake half on (due to the going) for 12th place. He was due to do two more prep runs before heading to Bicton to compete in the U25 National Championships in June and I will do my best to win again!
IMPOSANT Impy has had a great start to the season and
KEEPING UP WITH IMPOSANT
mposant will now be taking over the reins from Hobby as the Your Horse and Country syndicated horse so I thought it would be good to let you all know a little more about him. Impy is a dream in the stable and although we are not supposed to have favourites, both the girls and I do have a soft spot for him. He is a nine-year-old Dutch bred gelding who is owned by the Kerr-Dineen family, and came to me during the first lockdown in 2020, which was actually a great opportunity to build our partnership. Luckily the hard work seemed to pay off and we won our first event together and since then he has given me great rides at all of his competitions. He wintered very well and benefited from the training and mountaineering that we put in over the quiet months! I have great belief that this horse still has so much to give and it is always a pleasure to ride ones that enjoy their work and aim to please. Minnie Kerr-Dineen, who is Impy’s mum, loves coming to ride him when she can between her vet studies in Liverpool and it is great that she is able to do this. Like all the horses, we aim to vary their
came out of the winter looking well. He, like Val, headed to Oasby for his first run in the BE100 Open, which he would have won if I hadn’t made a very embarrassing mistake of missing out a fence (whoops!). Luckily he was none the wiser and came out at Eland Lodge and was second in the Novice there. I am very thankful to the Kerr-Dineen family for their support at this time.
MBF ARCTIC EMPEROR Penguin had a good run at Oasby in the BE100 to take third, and then went onto the Novice at Eland Lodge, pictured right, where he had a steady run. He is now just ticking over until I am back and will hopefully do an international in the autumn.
BROADHURST LARA She came to me at the end of last year and is a really talented little five-year-old who has loved going out and getting her teeth into her work. She has been cross country schooling and unaffiliated showjumping. Her first event

work to keep both their minds and bodies developing and changing as they progress through the trajectory work at the beginning of the season, to then become established at each level as they move up. On the flat I tend to train the horses for movements that are a level or two above the one they are currently working at, so Impy is now established in his lateral work and I am introducing changes and pirouettes to his routine flat training. Over fences, I use a variation of gymnastic work; such as grids and raised poles, and also full courses. We are very lucky here that we can build a full course in our arena, which I find good for all the horses as match practise. Roughly twice a week they will hack on the roads or up the mountain; this is great for a change of scene and building up their core strength. At the moment Impy is cantering once a week, which keeps his base fitness up for his level. We have a great team at the moment and I can’t wait to be out eventing again, and hopefully winning! As always I am so grateful to my sponsors and supporters over what has been a hard year and we are working hard behind the scenes at the
will hopefully be at Llanymynech in the BE90. I am really excited about this horse and am very thankful to Tina and David Broadhurst for their support in asking me to pilot this lovely young horse.
L SPECIAL G Special is a very gifted five-year-old gelding owned by Penny Ecroyd and Julie Hall. He, like the other young horses, has very much enjoyed going out schooling and jumping unaffiliated. He will hopefully be aimed at the young horse classes later this year.
MELLOW LANE Mellow has been showing her talent this spring and like the other babies has very much enjoyed her outings! She is a top-class mare and has a very bright future ahead of her. There is no mad rush with these young horses, as undoubtedly the more time I take gaining their confidence at this stage, the more it will pay off ultimately. We are making the most of the quieter time with her and she has gone off to Twemlows Stud to have an

embryo transfer done… fingers crossed this all goes smoothly.
KILBUNNY EMPEROR Bunny unfortunately sustained a fracture to his coffin joint while out in the field. After a visit to the vets he was put on box rest with his foot in a cast… luckily this has all healed extremely well and he’s slowly picking up his work again. Quite amazing what these vets can do these days! Once he’s back in full fitness he will not be rushed but he is a star gelding who I am sure will take to eventing like a duck to water.

HACKS, HILLS AND HAPPY HORSES YARD TALK
Team YHC are enjoying evening excursions, building fitness and making hay while the sun shines
R
ain, rain, rain and WITH more rain TEAM YHC pretty much sums up spring! With quite possibly the wettest spring on record we were certainly glad to see the back of it and we welcomed summer with open arms. The temperature has risen and those chilly starts have been replaced with warm breezes, plenty of sunshine and all in all some very happy horses!
Longer days mean our favourite summer evening hacks have returned, exploring the gorgeous countryside that surrounds us. With some very hot temperatures of late we decided to rotate the horses, meaning that they are out grazing of an evening and taking shelter from the sun, spending lazy days in their stables, during the hottest points of the day. With the evening being the coolest time to ride we have used this time to focus on our hill work. It’s a great feeling to feel your

horse strengthen day by day as they begin to push more and more up those hills, ensuring a healthy balance of walk and trot work, building not only their fitness but their stamina too. We are quite fortunate locally as a neighbouring farmer allows us to canter through his undulating fields. The ground here has been perfect for allowing the horses to really stretch their backs and blow out the last of any winter cobwebs! Back on the yard we are frantically making space for this year’s cut of hay.
YARD TALK
With approximately 20 acres growing thick and fast it won’t be long until we fill our barns with stocks of hay to see us through the winter months. With lockdown easing our sport has started once again with more and more events going ahead. We have opted to sit tight at the moment and not rush back into the swing of competition but are certainly aiming towards an autumn return. Speaking of which, we decided to send our horse box off for a little TLC over the lockdown period and we are really excited to have her back and, may I say, looking quite fabulous and ready to safely transport our horses to forthcoming shows in style! Poor Charlie and Flash spent most of the spring on box rest, both with tendon injuries sustained in the field – no doubt with a little spring in the air they had been charging around on a changing ground and took an

A DIFFERENT WAY TO HARROW By design, the SCH 3 Way Chain Harrows are easier to pull than conventional chain harrows. The primary feature of these chain harrows is that they can be pulled in three different directions to achieve the desired effect. The tines of the harrow protrude more if pulled in one direction, creating an aggressive application. If the tow bar is changed to the other end of the chain harrow, the tines protrude less, creating a passive application. The harrow can also be turned upside down, making it perfect for levelling grassed areas. unfortunate pull, both on lower hinds. Both horses suffered with weight loss as a result of the box rest with diminishing condition and drop in top line. With no option to hand walk or graze we were drawn to Ready Mash Extra, a feed from our friends at Rowen Barbary Horse Feeds, which as a complete grass replacement offered all the nutrients they required to slowly and safely rebuild and rebalance prior to the commencement of light work. After weeks of cold hosing, ice packs, leg wraps and rest I am pleased to say that both horses are now back in work and managing limited trot as we slowly rebuild their legs, but both are showing all the signs of a full and fit recovery! In non-horsey news, the sheep have been shorn and are looking so lovely! Their fleeces were so thick and heavy and with the sun getting warmer by the day it was definitely time to get it off. They now resemble overgrown dogs with full tails, as they run around playing with the dalmatians on the yard – not forgetting tiny Tim as well, of course!

The Lighter Diet
S
pring and summer can be a risk for horses and ponies prone to laminitis as the new grass contains high levels of soluble sugars and nonstructural carbohydrates (NSCs) and this high sugar content can be one of several different triggers for laminitis.
Due to the unique fermentation process, the sugar in HorseHage is considerably lower than other types of forage – typically less than 5% - and this, along with the lower energy content makes the High Fibre variety of HorseHage suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis.
If your horse or pony is prone to laminitis, it should be fed a low sugar, low starch and high fibre diet. It is important not to starve horses and ponies prone to laminitis as this can cause further problems.
Mollichaff HoofKind Complete is made from a balanced blend of high quality straw, dried alfalfa, fibre pellets and soya oil with added vitamins and minerals,
You should choose forage that has a lower sugar content than hay, such as High Fibre HorseHage, and, ideally, a complete feed, low in starch and sugar that is suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis such as Mollichaff HoofKind Complete.
elements, including magnesium and natural plant-based antioxidants, as well as added biotin. It is low in starch and sugar, high in fibre and does not contain any cereals. It provides a low level but high quality protein and restricted calories to give limited, controlled energy from high quality digestible fibre and oil-based ingredients, making it an excellent feed for good doers as well as those prone to laminitis. Mollichaff HoofKind Complete can be used as the sole bucket feed when fed at the recommended levels as it contains a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement.

Talk to horses in a language they undertand
Shady understands the way horses communicate and what they need from a human, and he uses this knowledge to train horses and solve problems. Shady’s dream is to help humans have a better understanding of horses. For anyone to have a successful relationship, they need will, faith, knowledge, and understanding, patience and feeling. Shady believes that if someone has the first two qualities (will and faith) he can teach them the others. Over the years, Shady has gained experience with many different horses, most of which had some sort of problem that needed to be fixed. Shady learned that many horses become problem horses because of problem people. Humans do not always understand how their actions, body language, and behaviour can impact the horse and how it reacts to a situation. For this reason Shady works with both the horse and the owner: it is only by working in cooperation with each other that the problem can be resolved.

Case Study:
Arty
and his journey with Shady Horsemanship Arty is a now a 5-year old Knabstrupper gelding, beautifully spotted and standing at about 16.2 hh. Shadys first encounter with Arty was to help him with a deep dislike of picking up his back feet. It didn’t take long for Shady to resolve the problem whilst showing Lindsay, Arty’s owner, what she needed to do to keep Arty happy and obliging. With a young 2 year old Arty, Lindsay saw Shady was running an in-hand course at Shenley Stud and signed up although she wasn’t having any particular problems with him. Lindsay had done some horsemanship training some years before, but having seen Shady in action she had been impressed by how he always put the horse first. Lindsay had experienced some trainers who put the ‘show’ first, and sometimes pushed horses further and faster than they were ready to go, but Shady always broke things down into steps, and always took his time. They happily completed the course together and she went on to attend some in-hand shows with a very well-behaved horse. Soon Arty was 3½ years old, and it was time to think about backing him. Shady took about a month to get Arty working under saddle and then he went home for a bit of light ridden work with Lindsay, just walk and trot with some short hacks. He was turned away until the following summer in order to mature some more, then it was off to Shenley Stud again for seven weeks of training. Some of Lindsay’s friends were skeptical because Shady took four weeks before he sat on him again, but Lindsay was confident that Shady was taking just the time needed to get Arty secure in his new life as a ridden horse. Then it was time for Lindsay to go and ride the ‘finished’ Arty, and her reaction was to burst into tears! …tears of happiness!
Since then Arty has gone from strength to strength. He has started his dressage career, winning at intro and prelim. He is Lindsay’s lifetime horse, so she is aiming for steady progress; next on the agenda is popping a few low jumps. He is a willing, calm and responsive horse, and going forward she is hoping to do a bit of everything with him. Shady Horsemanship exercises are still very much on the agenda, both in-hand and ridden. Arty’s ability to stand like a rock at any mounting block is the particular envy of Lindsay’s friends. We hope that Lindsay and Arty’s story show that Shady Horsemanship training is not only for problem horses, and owners in crisis. You can use Shady’s techniques to achieve the best possible relationship with your horse. Shady has built a confident and trusting horse in Arty, and also a confident and trusting rider in Lindsay. We should perhaps give Lindsay the final words “Shady openly shares his tools and techniques, which equips owners to apply them to new learning points as well as reinforce old ones ..... I also do feel that he works carefully with the personality of each horse and doesn’t try to change them or suppress them.” So a happy story for both Lindsay and Arty.

Thanks to the weather, sweet itch season got an early start this year. Itchy Horse Company looks at how to combat those maddening midges.
A
pproximately five per cent of equines in the UK suffer from sweet itch. It results from hypersensitivity to salivary antigens from biting midges (Culicoides) and, to a lesser extent, the larger Simulium equinum, a member of the black fly family. It is a common and well-described seasonal allergic dermatitis between March and October, reflecting the presence of insects and may affect all equine species. Intervention should begin as early as possible in the season – the climate appears to be playing havoc with our seasons, and our milder and damper winters are allowing the midge breeding season to start earlier (midges were seen in January this year).
SYMPTOMS Typically, sufferers can be observed excessively rubbing and scratching the

mane, tail, withers, head, back and belly, or, in severe cases, the whole body. This persistent, self-inflicted trauma can cause damage, such as scaling, excoriation, hair breakage, alopecia, hives and ulcerations. The skin will become thickened and ridged if this pattern is repeated yearly and the risk of secondary infection is high Other signs include lethargy or agitation, lack of concentration and head shaking. Weight loss is another possible clinical sign in severe cases. It is thought signs will worsen with age.
PREVENTION It is widely documented there is no cure for sweet itch; the only true prevention is to completely eliminate the insects’ contact

with the horse. Culicoides have a short flying distance of 100 metres and their breeding sites are wet soil, moist, decaying vegetation, clay soil and marsh land, so where possible, sufferers should be kept away from muck heaps, old hay, rotting leaves, streams and wet ground. Windy hillsides, chalk-based grassland or coastal areas are unsuitable environments for Culicoides, making them useful turnout environments for sweet itch cases. Stabling at dawn and dusk is often
advised but horses can do themselves more damage while stabled, as the environment lends itself to areas they can rub on. A good sweet itch rug (Boett) with good protection and leaving the horse out in a suitable environment is preferable. Antihistamines may bring some relief, but increasingly high doses are required and the effects are variable. They can make the horse drowsy and, therefore, are not ideal for long-term use. A highly successful form of prevention is the Boett Blanket (available from

he past 18 months have prompted us all to reflect and evaluate future goals. What may have been top of the list to do as the year 2020 began is now languishing on the giant list of things to do “one day”. It has proven to be a time for change with record numbers of people reaching out to online learning as a means of self-improvement in the form of knowledge and education. As popular as the traditional “hands-on” training is, the ever-growing availability of online courses has helped fill the gaps in the calendar felt by many, with the cancelled events over the last couple of seasons, and have got us fired up to
get back to what we love. Luckily, there are courses to suit everyone – whether you want to improve your riding performance or learn the basics of equine first aid, you are sure to find something to suit. We had a look at what is currently on offer: ACS Distance Education has been around for over 40 years, with the introduction of a UK branch in 2002. By this time the internet had brought the ability to enrol remotely anywhere in the world. It currently has over 3,000 students in over 100 countries, and offers endless choices of courses, including qualifications in horse care, equine behaviour, horse breeding

s there anything more beautiful than the vista of a sprawling hillside, with contented horses munching on clean, weed-free pasture? If you’re responsible for equine grazing, it’s probably one of the most pressing jobs on your to-do list, to manage the grass. Pasture serves many different purposes, not least to provide nutrition (and, in turn, holistic health) to the horse. There’s also the opportunity to socialise and “be a horse”, a place to exercise and maintain mobility –
and, of course, answer the call of nature! But that picture-perfect image takes a lot of work to maintain. Pasture takes lots of dung clearing (or other maintenance methods), weed-pulling, fence mending and sward maintenance to keep it safe and functional. With summer arriving, here are some of the ways you can help keep the pasture you’re responsible for in tip-top condition.
TOPPING THE GRASS This is commonly a once-a-year job (more
if required), during spring or summer. This “light mow” encourages new leaf growth, decreases the opportunity for weeds to grow by preventing seeding, stimulates new root growth, and improves the pasture by encouraging a thick turf. Horses tend to prefer a shorter length of grass in any case, which is sweeter than the longer swards. (Make sure you remove the cut grass as a preference, or let it dry out completely before the pasture is grazed upon.) Toppers are commonly pulled behind a

farm vehicle such as a compact tractor, and have swinging blades. You can also use flail mowers, which are generally smaller, but can also cut your verges and lawns, making the yard a little tidier!
HARROWING AND ROLLING
This tends to be carried out in spring, in conjunction with rolling; the process lifts the vegetation up (as well as dead grass), and levels the ground to a degree. It allows air movement and root aeration, which helps the soil to “breathe”, and plays a part in the reduction of parasites. Rolling the land afterwards helps bed in any seed, and can help flatten rivets, vehicle channels and poached areas. Again these devices can be pulled behind a farm vehicle. If it was too wet to harrow and roll in spring, this can be done in early summer.
WEED CONTROL The dangers of ragwort are wellknown. According to World Horse Welfare, it’s a poisonous plant that can damage the equine liver when eaten, causing irreparable damage. (It’s important to realise that “dead” or dried ragwort in hay is still dangerous, and must be discarded). Ragwort “rosettes” can be

HOW LONG DO I TURN HORSES OUT FOR?
According to the BHS, research has found that grazing time increases drastically during spring and summer, with nearly 50% of horses turned out on permanent grazing. Studies have shown that horses can eat up to 4% of their bodyweight (BW) as grass per day. As guidance, it is said that horses at maintenance or in light exercise require just 2% of their BW per day, whereas overweight horses require
found from early spring onwards, and the mature ragwort plants flower from May to October. One plant can produce many thousands of seeds! Get yourself some ragwort forks and employ an army of folk to dig the ragwort up by its roots, ideally at the seedling or rosette stage. It’s easier after a rainy day – use gloves to protect your hands, and ideally burn the pulledup weeds. If it is out of control, you may need to remove the horses
only 1.5% of their BW per day. Owners and yard managers are therefore advised to utilise strip grazing, “starvation paddocks” which are not optimised for grass growth, and grazing muzzles as required to help reduce excess calorie consumption – the horse’s vet can make specific recommendations. See also our panel “Paddock paradise or track system” on the next page. and completely spray the paddocks with herbicide – ideally in February or March before the plant matures – before resting the field after treatment. It can be repeated mid-September to mid-November, again if equines are not grazing on the fields at the time.
RE-SEED PADDOCK GRASS This is usually a late-August job. You will commonly see in your chosen pasture mix creeping red fescue (included to develop a tougher grass sward); timothy (a plant that tends to suit equines’ systems very well PROMOTION

and is tasty), and meadow fescue (a hardy plant), as well as perennial ryegrass. But be aware that ryegrass stores its sugars as “fructans”, linked to laminitis in horses. It is favoured by farmers grazing cows, as it produces a good milk yield, but many horses are very sensitive to it. Non ryegrass-based pasture mixtures are available. Your pasture mix may also include herbs such as yarrow, which can help lift trace elements in the soil; sheep’s parsley, a mineral rich in iron and vitamin C, and chicory, a herb that has natural anthelmintic properties. (Specific blends are recommended for broodmares and youngstock. Ask your agricultural supplier for advice.) It’s a good idea to re-seed areas of the land after harrowing.
MAINTAIN FENCING Fencing should ideally be high enough to deter horses from jumping out, and strong enough to prevent them from leaning over it. The British Horse Society (BHS) recommends that horse fencing should be approximately 1.08m to 1.38m (3ft 6" to
*
PADDOCK PARADISE OR TRACK SYSTEM? Have you heard of the paddock paradise or track system? This is a natural way of keeping horses that imitates herd life. The constant need to move and find food encourages movement, which is exactly what nature intended. Paddock paradises help to stimulate horses to behave according to their instincts. These systems utilise a track across the available grass (usually made from temporary/ electric fencing) that’s 10-30 feet wide – you can place hay and drinking water in random spots along the track, include sheltered areas, and even include a variety of surfaces such as sand, gravel and water spots, to promote hoof health. The track system is also a good way to reduce excessive calorie intake from grass.
4ft 6") high, with the lower rails placed at approximately 0.5m (1ft 6") above ground level. Timber post and rail fencing is often the preferred solution, but it can be expensive for large-scale facilities. Mesh wire fencing is widely used now, and requires very little maintenance – high tensile mesh is designed especially for horses. You could use a blend of materials to include timber, non-wooden railings, mesh and electric tape, as suits your requirements.
TOP TIPS Remove droppings regularly; this keeps the pasture healthy, is just nicer for the horses, and is part of a good worming management system. (Worm eggs and larvae are deposited through horse droppings, so when horses graze around piles of manure, they can easily ingest worms.) Avoid overgrazing; this will stop the appearance of patchy areas, which encourage weed growth. Try to rotate the pasture whenever you can, even if it means dividing fields into smaller sections. The BHS recommends a ratio of two horses per hectare on permanent grazing (1-1.5 acres per horse).
Test the soil a couple of times a year; you’re checking the soil pH and index of the major nutrients phosphorus, potash and magnesium. Testing measures soil acidity (pH), and estimates the plant-available concentrations of the nutrients. The Soil Association website has a list of soil testing companies at soilassociation.org. This is commonly done in late spring or summer, and again in late winter. Clear your drainage; if you’re seeing regular boggy and wet areas, then drainage could be an issue – the drainage ditches around the field may need clearing, as vegetation may have simply overgrown, or there could be a blockage. Upgrade your paddock vehicles; there’s a range of vehicles available that are useful for landowners – they include utility vehicles such as Gators, which transport things like fence posts and animal feed; quad bikes that tow essential equipment like toppers; compact tractors that can be fitted with loaders and additional equipment; and muck trailers that store manure. If you really want to splash out, paddock cleaners can make manure clearing a breeze, with their powerful vacuum hoses.

aving your own vehicle to travel to horsey shows and events in is the ultimate ticket to freedom – but there are many considerations. Because many of us only venture out relatively infrequently (compared at least to most other roadworthy vehicles!), it’s especially important to make sure equestrian vehicles are safe. Therefore, basic vehicle maintenance is key – this will ensure your horsebox meets legal requirements, and of course means your valuable cargo stays safe! Choose a specialist garage for your annual MOT (or for HGVs, including horseboxes with a gross weight of more than 3,500 kg, an authorised testing facility or Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) vehicle testing station, for the “annual test”.) CHECKLIST Here are some “walkaround” checks you can do to keep your vehicle safe and roadworthy: Horseboxes 1 Check speed-limiter/tachograph calibration plaque and seals, and any illumination. 2 Check the condition of the handbrake. 3 Look for missing reflectors. 4 Check wheel nuts for security. 5 Use your vehicle regularly – this helps maintain braking efficiency by preventing seizure. Check tyre tread depth exceeds 1mm, and tyre pressures are correct. 6 Check to see if the vehicle stands “square”, and listen for knocking sounds when in motion. 7 Check for oil leaks, and that the fuel cap has a seal fitted.

SPICK AND SPAN on its first annual test by DVSA, which details its weight; most vehicles aged between one and two years in spring 2020 gained a 12-month extension due to Covid-19, but do now require certification. It’s of course worth having your horsebox properly checked and serviced by a qualified mechanic before the annual test. Remember also that DVSA has the ability to undertake random roadside checks on horseboxes. They’re commonly looking at roadworthiness, mechanical faults, and no breaches of authorised load weights, which is sadly a too-common occurrence with some equestrian lorries. Bear in mind that as
Get your hose or pressure washer out regularly, to clean your vehicle – it’s also a good opportunity to check for any damage. Clean the exterior, including the wheel wells, tyres, paintwork and undercarriage, using an automotive soap and soft bristled brush; thoroughly scrub the exterior surfaces and rinse the soap off afterwards. Don’t forget to admire your handiwork! While you’re there, check you have within the vehicle or towing vehicle a warning triangle, membership details and contacts for your breakdown and recovery company, your vet’s number, a torch and hi-vis apparel, and jump leads for the towing vehicle. Trailers 1 Check the connections are secure, and in good condition. 2 Check the jockey wheel is secure, and operational. 3 Check whether towing mirrors are required, or would assist. 4 Check that access doors are secured, and glass panels are in good condition. 5 Check for general condition and security, e.g. that the breakaway cable is properly attached. 6 Look for functional reflectors. 7 Check that all lights work. 8 Check that the exterior spare wheel and carrier are functional and secure. 9 Check that the tyres and wheels are fixed, secure and in good condition; make sure tyre tread depth exceeds 1.6mm.

TOP TIPS
FOR TRANSPORTING HORSES 1 Always take the horse’s passport on board (a legal requirement). 2 With smaller vehicles like 3.5-tonne horseboxes, it is easier to inadvertently go over the payload (e.g. the total weight you can carry). The payload for a 3.5-tonne vehicle is usually up to 1,200kg, for example, which you can check with the coachbuilder or seller. 3 Be aware of your vehicle’s MAM (maximum authorised mass). This is the designated weight, e.g. “3.5-tonne” means a MAM totalling a combination of the vehicle, the passengers and horses, and equipment. Ideally, note your horse’s weight from any vet’s visits, using their weighbridge. (Payload is the difference between the vehicle unladen weight (VUW) and the MAM.) 4 There is a requirement for a Standard National Operator’s Licence for anyone who uses a vehicle (including a transport vehicle and a horsebox trailer) of more than 3.5 tonnes for the business of carrying livestock. (If the journey is in connection with your own trade or business, a Restricted Operators Licence is needed.) Transport of your own horses, if they’re kept as a hobby where the

income does not significantly exceed the expenditure, is exempt. 5 If your vehicle has a GPW (gross plated weight) of over 3.5 tonnes and is used in connection with a trade or business, you need a tachograph. If the vehicle has a GPW of under 7.5 tonnes and is used for private use, you do not need a tachograph. If the vehicle has a GPW of over 7.5 tonnes irrespective of private or business use, you DO need a tachograph. 6 If you had planned to use the righthand lane of a motorway, be aware that a horsebox over 3.5 and up to 7.5 tonnes with a speed limiter; a horsebox exceeding 7.5 tonnes; and a vehicle and trailer, are NOT permitted to use the offside lane of a motorway. 7 All goods vehicles with a gross weight in excess of 3.5 tonnes are required to have a functional speed limiter. The set speed of a limiter depends on the age of the vehicle.

VEHICLE INSURANCE
You will of course need horsebox insurance – there are various elements available which build upon the basis of public liability insurance for claims. You can then add on aspects like protected no-claims discount, replacement of old vehicle for new, discounts for providing extra security measures that are installed, cover for driving in European countries, and discounts when the annual mileage is limited (called “limited mileage policy”) – commonly when there’s less than around 5,000 miles driven a year. Horsebox breakdown is an additional cover that provides roadside assistance when there is a problem, and can even include taking your horses to their destination. If you’re towing a trailer, your car policy will cover the trailer for third-party liability only – but you will need separate insurance cover for theft or damage to the trailer itself, as well as additional breakdown cover and roadside assistance.

It offers many features that will benefit both your horse while travelling, and you, the driver. KEY FEATURES Large, built-in tack room: with facilities to store tack, equipment, and luggage, you can save space in your towing vehicle and safely lock away your possessions while travelling. A vanity mirror and storage on the interior of the tack room door means you can get ready for competition with ease. Large, built-in tack room
If you are looking for a trailer that is designed with your horse’s comfort in mind, as well as ease of towing for you, then the new Cheval Liberté Touring Country with built-in tack room fits the bill perfectly. system, the Touring Country offers industryleading lowered floor height and exceptional handling qualities. This mechanism means that imperfections in your travelling routes are effectively absorbed, significantly reducing trailer movement and noise— and keeping your horse relaxed and ready for optimal performance. Pullman 2 Suspension uses a single piece chassis, so the trailer’s centre of gravity is closer to the ground. This results in better balance, no incline, no steps, and a ground clearance of only 30cm — innovative features that make for easy loading. Pullman 2 Suspension
Country’s wide front ramp not only makes unloading easier but also encourages nervous loaders. You can enter and exit the trailer in one swift movement, building up his confidence and reducing the fear of being trapped.
Appearance: the sleek, aerodynamic one-piece front and nose appearance of the Cheval Liberté Touring Country significantly contributes to minimising the fuel consumption of the towing vehicle. Available in black, light grey, red, white or anthracite, the trailer can even be matched to your vehicle. It effortlessly blends comfort, functionality, and style to offer you and your horse the ultimate towing experience. High-quality materials: manufactured
Rear combination ramp/door: with a simple, fast, and functional system, you can transform the opening at the rear of the trailer from a ramp to a barn door, and back again. Every horse is different and having the ability to adapt the opening to what they prefer can make loading your horse stressfree. Pullman 2 Suspension: manufactured using Cheval Liberté’s signature car-like, coil spring and gas struct Pullman 2 Suspension
Ventilation: you should not have to sacrifice a calming environment to ensure that your horse does not arrive flustered and sweating after his journey. The Cheval Liberté Touring Country has a light and airy interior, teamed with four sliding windows and an Airtech rear roller. These all encourage effective airflow and ventilation, without allowing excessive external noise into the trailer. Plenty of natural light in the trailer also prevents your horse from feeling claustrophobic, without absorbing heat into the trailer, as tinted windows do.
Front unloading ramp: with a large opening flap with sliding window, the ability to walk your horse out of the Touring
using high-class materials renowned for their technical qualities, the Touring Country has anodised aluminium box-section side walls and ramps, with an aluminium floor and 8mm rubber matting. Cheval Liberté has been making aluminium-sided trailers for more than ten years, and with extensive research and development over many years has developed a patent based on a unique method of assembly. This allows it to design trailers like the Touring Country that are stronger, lighter and have excellent handling.
Security: safety elements such as brakes, suspension, wheels, and accessories are approved and are subject to constant checks. Cheval Liberté’s horse trailers have received European homologation and benefit from a two-year and five-year parts and labour guarantee for aluminium boards and walls. See much more at

Do you know your payload before you drive to an event?
It is very easy to overload a 3500kg horsebox, and even a 7500kg one, as most people don’t take into account passengers, tack, water, hay, and these add to the payload considerably. For example, an empty 3500kg horsebox normally weighs about 2500kg, leaving 1000kg for the driver and passenger, horse, tack, etc. Many of these horseboxes are stalled for two horses, and that can be a big problem. If you are overloaded and have an accident, your insurance will be invalidated and you could be facing a number of offences, both overloading and licence ones. In recent years, the DVSA has found that more than 80% of LCV’s stopped on the roadside on suspicion of overloading, are in fact overweight.
Why Uprating You have a limited payload capacity and wish to carry an extra horse or equipment. You don’t want to buy a newer, bigger horsebox so you can save money by converting your current vehicle. You want to avoid a large fine by DVSA.
What to do if you are overloaded. The first thing is to weigh your horsebox FULLY LOADED with your horse(s), tack, water, food, and passengers so that you know where you stand. Remember to weigh each axle individually as you may find that whilst you may be under the Gross Vehicle Weight, you have actually overloaded the rear axle. This is very common in lightweight horseboxes. Fortunately SvTech can help, and is keen to promote its uprating service for lightweight horseboxes (3500kg), whereby the horsebox can gain an extra 200-300kg in payload. This provides vital payload capability when carrying an extra horse and/ or tack and offers peace of mind for the owner.
SvTech has carried out extensive work and testing on lightweight models and has covered uprates for most lightweight vehicles. It is worth noting that some uprates require modifications or changes to the vehicle’s braking, tyres and/or suspension, for which SvTech provides a simple purpose-built suspension assister kit. This will take between 1-2 hours for you to fit. Your horsebox will then go for a formal inspection to bring it into the ‘Goods’ category, and, depending on the vehicle’s age, may also require fitment of a speed limiter, for which there are one or two options. Most importantly, vehicles registered after May 2002 must be fitted with manufacturer’s ABS, if going above 3500kg.
We can start the ball rolling by asking customers to fill in an enquiry form and send it back with photos of the Horsebox plate, the weight ticket and Registration Document.
