Noughties fashion

Welcome T

here is a lot of excitement beginning to stir within the YHC team as our favourite time of the year commences - Badminton! Missing out on Badminton over the last 2 years has left a huge gap in our equestrian and social calendars. We are very much looking forward to going back to spectating at our favourite event of the year, this allows our horses a 5-day respite whilst team YHC get to enjoy the thrill of the event. Read more about our horses with an update from the YHC farm on page 102. As the days grow longer now is a great time to plan the year ahead. The UK has some spectacular event’s planned in 2022, we have shared a selection of outdoor events on page 6. With a busy social calendar planned, is it time to consider a new wardrobe? Take a look at Kathy Carter’s feature on noughties fashion making a come-back (page 31). On page 61 we catch up with animal welfare charities working hard at re-homing equines after the pandemic caused a knock-on impact to horse welfare. Would you consider rehoming an equine if you are horse hunting this year? Within this edition we have features on spotting the signs and treating cases of leptospirosis, a deadly contagious disease often spread by rats (page 116), tips for an `eventful’ eventing year (page 124) and a Q&A on understanding your hormonal mare (page 127). In our Country Property feature Zoe Hewett looks at making the most of your outdoor spaces. Whether you have a tiny patio or acres and acres check out page 16 to see how you can transform even the humblest of spaces and bring the inside, out. We hope this edition brings our readers some spring excitement into what is promising to be an exhilarating season ahead - happy riding!

“Doing our bit” ~ supporting the

BIT DONATION SCHEME run by Friends of Marwari / Kathiawari Horse UK and the Indigenous Horse Society of India A horse bit donation scheme, where donated pony snaffles from the UK are sterilised, graded and then distributed at the rural horse fairs in Rajasthan, along with EDUCATION on good bitting, to encourage riders to use these and not the homemade cruel and sharp THORN bits. We also educate the local bit manufacturers not to produce the THORN bits. There are over 60 UK collection points throughout the UK where you can donate your old or unwanted pony bits.

Horse India asks our riders to bring some of the donated bits with them in their luggage and then they distribute them to rural horse owners they meet along the ride and at the horse fairs. Over 3,000 smooth bits have been donated since 2010 and distributed to 13 locations and 4 states of Northern India so far. Find out more about this simple scheme by scanning the red QR code above and navigating to the projects page ‘bits’. Alternatively, just google ‘Bit Donation Scheme’ - Thank you!

Making the most of your

outdoor space

From the humblest of picnic blankets to a fully decked out summerhouse or brand new stables there is something endlessly alluring about a living space set up al fresco.

T

he great news is that when it comes to outdoor living, size really does not matter, as something fabulous can be done at every step from a tiny patio to acres and acres. Even in the largest of fields or meadows people will always feel most comfortable congregating in a relatively small area, with a collection of seating - whether formal chairs around a table or casual cushions - arranged at a close, human scale. Landscaping a garden of any size in order to zone an area designated for living is an excellent way to achieve this sense of closeness within the freedom that only the great outdoors can offer. It is also a wonderful way to create mystery and magic, stepping stones or pathways leading to secret places behind hedges or constructed walls, in straight lines or meandering curves. When it comes to style, taking cues form the house architecture is crucial for a seamless, united experience of the inside and outside. Consider whether a formal, symmetrical

16 | SPRING 2022 Your Horse & Country Magazine - YOUR COUNTRY PROPERTY

layout feels traditional and in step with a period home, or do bold clean lines like actually this read as more contemporary. It may be only the choice of materials that makes the difference, from rustic red bricks and natural local stone or ultra sleek white concrete moulded blocks with dark grey slate slabs, for example. If your home and preference is for something a little more ramshackle, embracing organic shapes and asymmetrical planting might be a better fit. Adding colour to the outside space in a considered way, just as you would when decorating a room in your home, is another brilliant way to make the best of a patch of land. Grouping colours together in a harmonious way so that they bleed into each other, just as if you look at two or three hues next-door to each other in a rainbow, is an impactful way to use colour very successfully. Red, orange and yellow will provide a stimulating and joyful colour pop. Purple, lilac, a few pinks and white

together will lend a relaxing sense of whimsy. Sometimes simplicity is really the best option. Imagine a garden of flowers in only that impossible-to-describe shade of black aubergine (reddish-purple-black) and white against all those green fronds. Stunning. Less can be more outside as well when in decorating the home. Another key ingredient for creating comfort outdoors is water. Just as we like to plumb in taps for easy drinking and bathing inside there is nothing so soothing on a searingly hot day as a pond. For the most modest of cottage gardens even a bird bath will do to create that sense of a watery surface gloriously glistening in the sunshine. In fact, it is absolutely possible to create a mini pond in an old oak half barrel, or another similar sized vessel. It would be worth consulting with gardener about the benefits of oxygenating pond plants and aquatic snails to keep it well aerated and healthy. Using a pond as a chance for native

wildflowers and plants to grow will benefit local wildlife hugely and ultimately make your garden much more lively and interesting. If you like the wild, untamed look you can go as jungly as you like by planting a variety of large leaf foliage and allowing it to get a little overgrown. It is important to ensure there are ‘steps’ from the sides towards the deeper part of any pond, rather than steep sides all the way around, to enable visiting creatures to get safely in and out of the water. We fill our homes with motifs of fish and other animals but out here you can have and enjoy the real thing with a little research about which aquarium dwellers are compatible with which other species, plants and pond sizes. Think of it as moving, living wallpaper! For households with young children a safer option would be to build a raised pond so it is much harder (although not impossible) for them to fall in. There is also scope for making the sides from glass so they can see what lies in the murky water beneath the surface. We love to

adorn our home interior walls with art, so not to include art in our outside space seems a wasted opportunity. Being outdoors there is greater scope for going three-dimensional with sculpture, maybe even large scale. As a central focal point of a pond of any shape, a piece of sculptural art will really elevate a garden. The choice is endless when it comes to both material and style. From classical portraiture carved from stone or cast in either smooth or highly textured, weathered-looking metal to   Benefit from local wildlife by introducing a pond to your garden

abstract shapes made from wood, willow, resin or ceramic. Having somewhere nearby to relax and appreciate all this is paramount. Even the simplest set-up of a wrought iron bistro table and chairs enough for two will do. For owners of big gardens or a little land and big dreams then building a magical interior outside would be a wonderful addition. Perhaps a pretty pergola with wisteria or other climbing and trailing leafage overhead will suffice to zone a selection of shaded seats and

swings. Pinterest is awash with examples of very well-dressed greenhouses complete with chandeliers over the potting bench, fringed and tasselled lampshades near occasional chairs and an array of fairy lights swagged above hammocks. Life really is too short not to live it beautifully it seems. If you are more of an avid equestrian and are fortunate enough to have land that could accommodate facilities to compliment your hobby and lifestyle then why not invest in stables, shelters, menage and even turn

 A simple shed can be converted into a breath-taking garden bar

out pens that can enable you to enjoy your passions from home. A car port or garage is something also to consider as land management however large or small will require upkeep and can aesthetically house your equipment be it simple shears or a topper and tractor. Simple sheds can become anything from offbeat offices to breath-taking bars, with plenty of inspiration and imagination. To work with something pre-existing rather than starting from scratch, an old barn or out of use horse box can be converted into a fantastic bottom-of-the-garden hideaway and made as plush as you like. The ultimate exterior interior would have to be a treehouse though. They are so transportive and universally loved and can be styled in so many ways from English countryside chic to Canadian cabin, or a more ‘out-there’ fairy dell. If that seems a folly or extravagance for occasional use then if it can be set far enough away from the main property to feel a little private, then it could become a source of income as a glamping holiday let, entirely justifying its existence. Where there is enough land available to position such hideouts so that there is plenty of space between each one to give visitors the feeling of privacy from each other too (screening and clever planting can help with this) then it could become a real destination for paying guests at times when you feel like sharing the view with others who too love living as they would inside outside. 

Great Bragmans Farm, Belsize, Bragmans Lane, Rickmansworth

An outstanding 16th century farmhouse, that interestingly, is believed to have offered refuge to King Charles II. Situation: The location is truly marvellous, as the house enjoys a private, elevated position surrounded by acres of countryside, yet only lies just over 5 miles from a mainline station to London. It offers a comfortable interior, which sympathetically enhances the original farmhouse, whilst focusing around family life and entertaining. The grounds extend to nearly 8 acres in total and incorporate private, southerly rear gardens with a part-walled boundary and separate walled kitchen garden. The present owners have invested considerably in both the planting and landscaping of the gardens and this is evident in the maturity and charm of the house’s surrounds.

Planning Tips for Horse Owners •

Some local authorities have Local Plan policies relating to equestrian development. Where there is no policy, planning decisions will rely on policies covering countryside and recreation.

The visual and environmental impact of any equestrian developments needs to be carefully considered. Even construction of stables close to mature trees can impact on bats for reason of construction, or lighting.

There is a difference between solely grazing horses on land , and ‘keeping’ horses on land where they are stabled and rugged, and fed. The first is treated as an agricultural use of land while the ‘keeping’ is technically a change of use of the land for which planning permission is required.

People often think a field shelter on skids does not require planning permission, this is only the case if it is moved from time to time. If the field shelter has a base it becomes a permanent structure requiring planning permission.

In certain circumstances you are able to build stables in the back garden of your house for private use.

Land with planning permission for stables and equestrian use is previously developed land, this can be useful where more commercial or residential use is proposed.

Sand schools and canter tracks are a change of use of land and an engineering operation so require planning permission.

Permanent cross country jumps in fields require planning permission.

Many authorities have become concerned about muck heaps being a source of pollution to rivers and streams.

Generally planners look for a relationship between the extent of land used for horses and the number of stables. A rule of thumb is one horse per acre.

Some planning applications especially in more sensitive landscape areas request a ‘Pasture Management Plan.

Remember the horse is not treated for planning purposes as an agricultural animal so agricultural permitted development rights for buildings do not apply to horse yards or fields.

For advice on any of these matters do contact us for an informal chat.

WELFARE & REHOMING

HAPPY TOGETHER When the pandemic hit, animal welfare charities became gravely concerned of a knock-on impact on horse welfare; but have their concerns been realised? And could you consider rehoming an equine, if you’re horse hunting this year? Writes Kathy Carter

C

aroline Yon is Head of Animal Welfare at Oak Tree Animals’ Charity, and explains that while 2021 saw various restrictions and lockdowns that affected the organisation’s ability to fundraise, life is slowly returning to normal. “However, this year will have its own issues,” she concedes. “For example, the increases in cost of living have begun to impact on pet ownership, resulting in an increased need by our community for support from animal charities. We are seeing more requests for assistance from our Community Teams, with both foodbank and veterinary costs support,” Caroline says. “Covid has created different challenges for us to tackle, including animal support for key workers; the rising cost of animal-care; lack of socialisation in younger companion animals; and the huge rise in pet acquisition during lockdown.

THE COST OF LIVING Lynn Cutress, CEO at charity Redwings, agrees that the pandemic brought wideranging challenges to animal welfare organisations. “At Redwings, these included visitor centre closures, and the financial impact; keeping our staff safe and able to continue caring for our 1500 equines;

and finding a way to continue to rehome horses when potential new Guardians could not meet them and so that we could keep bringing in those who needed us,” Lynn explains. “We were of course concerned about a knock-on impact on horse welfare after the initial Covid-19 restrictions, but thankfully, such concerns have not been

Whether you’re searching for a ridden horse or a companion pony, World Horse Welfare’s rehoming site features a variety of horses and ponies, including youngsters and ridden prospects. With four Rescue and Rehoming Centres – in Aberdeenshire, Lancashire, Norfolk and Somerset – World Horse Welfare runs the UK’s largest equine rescue and rehoming scheme. TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES

ave pandemic-influenced technological developments influenced the way rehoming charities operate? Redwings started their virtual rehoming process in May 2020 in response to Covid-19 restrictions, and by May 2021, had rehomed their 100th horse, a cob called Dot, virtually. “The process involved prospective Guardians, e.g. the people that re-home our equines, sending in videos of their facilities; and our rehoming team began filming our horses in as many circumstances as possible, and sending the videos to prospective Guardians,” explains Lynn Cutress, Redwings CEO. “Amazingly, 2021 saw us exceed 2020’s already recordbreaking rehoming number by over 50% (from 84 rehomed equines to 130), resulting in us rehoming nearly as many horses as we rescued; and we continue to use some of these processes to streamline our rehoming process today,” she happily reports. Bransby Horses’ Rehoming Manager, Rosanna Elliott Hart, says that during the pandemic, the charity had to drastically adapt its rehoming process. “During March, April and May 2020, rehoming stopped completely. External visits also stopped, but support for the charity’s fosterers continued

over the phone, by email and via video calls – allowing these incredibly important relationships to flourish,” she explains. “Rehoming started again in early 2021 with an overwhelming influx of applications offering wonderful homes to some of the rescue residents.” Caroline Yon of Oak Tree Animals’ Charity says that throughout the pandemic, the charity’s teams had to find new and safe ways to operate, which still allowed staff to provide a full service to animals in need. “At various times, this has included moving to video visits of properties belonging to prospective adopters, collecting animals rather than having members of the public bring them in, and allowing all staff not directly involved in animal care to work from home - Zoom has become a fixture of everyday life for all teams at the charity,” Caroline explains. “A major change that we will keep moving forward is the implementation of screening and appointment-only visits for potential adopters,” she adds. “This has freed up the Animal Teams enormously, allowing them to be more productive, and we have better intake and rehoming results. In fact, we were able to help over 2600 animals in 2021.”

62 | SPRING 2022 Your Horse & Country Magazine - WELFARE & REHOMING

One big positive of the pandemic has been people’s enthusiasm to look towards equine welfare charities to rehome rescued horses. FINANCIAL PLANNING IS KEY We asked our contributing experts for their most useful piece of advice for individuals looking to provide a home for a horse, pony or donkey; Lynn Cutress says financial planning is a must. “One big positive of the pandemic for us has been people’s enthusiasm to look towards equine welfare charities to rehome rescued horses, and we hope even more people will support the rehoming efforts of registered charities this year. However, we would encourage anyone

ELLEN AND ZEUS  Bransby’s donkeys from the donkey sanctuary

thinking of taking on an equine to really do their sums carefully. Owning a horse, pony or donkey is a huge commitment both in time and expense even without these current challenges,” she advises.

BE HONEST ABOUT YOUR SITUATION Caroline Yon agrees that when looking for a new horse, pony, prospective owners or carers must do their research, and be realistic about their expectations and their long-term resources. “Work with a rehoming centre that will be honest about the suitability of the horse or pony for you, your facilities, the activities you want to do, and the health and ability of the horse or pony,” she advises. “Oak Tree for example offers continued support and advice for as long as you keep the animal. This year we are hoping to run a series of workshops for families contemplating buying their first

pony, aimed at ensuring both parents and children understand the full implications of equine ownership, from potential costs to potential pitfalls, basic care, and stable management. We are also the proud carers of four donkeys from the Donkey Sanctuary, allowing us to provide the Donkey Sanctuary with a facility in our region to run courses and assessments,” she concludes. Bransby Horses’ Rehoming Manager, Rosanna Elliott Hart, says that while having a bond with a horse of your own is an incredible experience, if you can offer a second chance to a rescue horse, you have the additional reward of knowing you are providing a safe, knowledgeable home to an equine who may have been through trauma, been abandoned or suffered cruelty. “Horses are extremely complex, but also extremely forgiving, and can offer you the world, given the chance,” she concludes. 

Ellen rehomed miniature Shetland pony Bransby Zeus through the Perfect Partner rehoming scheme at Bransby Horses when the pony was in his mid-20s. “Zeus is 26 and lives with his best friend Oscar, who is 29. I chose to rehome a pony, especially an older pony, as I want to give them the best retirement home and all of the love and cuddles they thoroughly deserve,” Ellen explains. “This is very easy too, as Zeus is so loving, and means the world to me. He enjoys going out and about and turning his hoof to new things, like showing, and we are looking forward to more adventures together,” Ellen concludes.

More people than ever before took on a rescued horse or pony from Redwings Horse Sanctuary last year. Redwings rehomed 130 horses to loving Guardian homes outside the Sanctuary – up over 50% on 2020’s total of 84. Rachel Angell, Head of Norfolk Equine Operations, who heads up the charity’s rehoming scheme, said:

2021’s record figure is a testament to the hard work of our teams throughout the Sanctuary who work tirelessly to rehabilitate our rescued horses so they can go on to enjoy lives in Guardian homes. Despite the challenges we continue to face with rehoming in the pandemic, our team is doing a fantastic job of finding long-term, loving homes for our rescued horses. Two ponies rehomed in 2021 were Redwings’ Maverick and Redwings’ Galena who went to their new home at Wick Court, a farm run by the charity Farms for City Children in Gloucester and co-founded by Michael Morpurgo. The ponies have been helping with interactive grooming sessions with children visiting the farm, who otherwise may have no access to green spaces or the countryside (pictured).

Maverick Stevie Edge-McKee, Farm School Manager, said: “At Wick Court we offer children from urban areas the chance to experience farm life. Our ponies are especially important as their sessions help to promote wellbeing and a connection with animals, and the children often bond especially with the horses.” Welsh Cross Maverick was born at Redwings after his mum and five other horses were rescued from a site in London. They had been turned-out on pasture without the landowner’s consent and were starting to suffer from lameness and poor body condition due to a lack of care. Native pony Galena was one of 35 ponies rescued by Redwings from a site in Norfolk in 2009. Many were emaciated and were being kept in unsuitable conditions on waterlogged land, with no grazing and surrounded by broken machinery and other hazards.

Galena Galena’s story featured in the charity’s first series of their new podcast ‘Sounds of the Sanctuary’. In the fourth episode of the series the Rehoming Team discuss what it takes to help ponies like Galena find their new Guardian homes, and the importance of rehoming to the charity. You can listen to the series on Spotify and all major podcast platforms.

Rescue Is Just The Beginning ....

Lluest Horse and Pony Trust founded in 1985, is a National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) accredited equine charity in S.W.Wales. During its time the Trust has rescued, rehabilitated, and found new approved Guardian homes for 100's of horses, ponies, and donkeys. Lluest meaning haven in Welsh, nestles against the Black Mountain in the beautiful Carmarthenshire countryside. Our aim is to restore our animals to full health, and through our Guardianship scheme, find them a loving purposeful loan home to live out the rest of their life in safety. Those equines we cannot rehome are offered sanctuary on the farm for the rest of their lives.

For 37 years public donations and fund-raising activities have kept our gates open and supported our valuable work. On average it costs us £4,500 per year to care for each resident and ensure the continued welfare of over 150 previously rescued equines now living in approved Guardian loan homes. With your help we can continue to open our gates for the needy, neglected, orphaned, and abandoned equines.

BADMINTON HORSE TRIALS 2022

JUMPING FOR JOY It’s been three long years since the Badminton International Horse Trials took place. But now, the globally prestigious competition is back, much to the delight of its supporters and eventing community.

B

adminton Horse Trials, presented by Mars Equestrian, takes place between May 4-8 – a hugely welcome return for this world-famous competition, which means a great deal to a large community of people. For riders and owners, whether Olympic contenders or first-timers, the trials are the ‘Wimbledon of the sport’, representing the culmination of hard work and long-held ambition. Many hopes will hinge on this first major British competition of the year, with team selectors talent-spotting ahead of the world championships in Italy in September. Badminton also represents a highlight of the year for the hundreds of volunteers and officials without whom the event could not run; for local businesses, who welcome thousands of people into the area for five days; for tradestand holders, ▶

who rely on high-attendance sporting events such as this to showcase their wares, and, obviously, for the spectators – many of whom treat Badminton as a much-loved annual holiday that combines top-quality sport with the chance to catch up with old friends.

NEW FOR 2022 There are two major changes for regular visitors this year. First, all tickets must be booked in

advance. There will be no gate admission, but tickets may be booked online right up to midnight the day before. It is hoped that this, and some new traffic routes, will speed admission and provide a smooth start to Saturday’s pivotal cross-country day. Also new is Badminton TV, providing subscribers with more than 75 hours of Badminton highlights, as well as live action during each phase of the 2022 event, except for the top 10 show jumping, which will be

broadcast via BBC 2 Grandstand and BBC iPlayer (both free to air) for viewers in the UK. Overseas subscribers will be able to watch all the live coverage including the top 10 show jumping continuously. More information about Badminton TV can be found at: www. badminton-horse.co.uk/badminton-tv

ANECDOTES FROM THE ARCHIVES As we celebrate the return of Badminton Horse Trials, we have rummaged through the archives to bring you some fascinating anecdotes from the past ... • The prize money for the inaugural 1949 event was £150 to the winner – now, the winner receives a handsome £100,000. • For the first 10 years, the dressage and show-jumping arenas were sited on the old cricket ground in front of Badminton House. Torrential rain in 1959 turned the park into a sea of mud and the arenas and tradestands were moved to the present site. • The very first European Championships were staged at Badminton in 1953. The winner was Major Laurence Rook on Starlight XV. • The Badminton Estate has been in the possession of the Beaufort family since 1608. The family itself is descended from John of Gaunt – son of King Edward III.

Badminton Horse Trials is the world’s oldest horse trials and offers the biggest prize fund in the sport.

Badminton is a 5-star competition, the highest level in the sport. The Duke’s legacy has paid off handsomely, as Britain has won medals galore and become the centre of the international sport, with Badminton setting the standard for spectacular country-house settings and famously challenging crosscountry courses. Great Britain currently holds eventing team gold at Olympic, world and European level for the first time in 40 years and accounts for seven of the top 12 in the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) World Rankings.

A CLASS LINE-UP

Christopher Burton (AUS) riding Cooley Lands

has worked in the office for more than 40 years – is the world’s oldest horse trials and offers the biggest prize fund in the sport, with £100,000 to the winner plus a new trophy, which will be unveiled in April. It takes place on the Duke of Beaufort’s estate and was started in 1949 by the 10th Duke to provide the highest possible standard of cross-country preparation for Britain’s Olympic teams.

The three members of Britain’s triumphant team at the Tokyo Olympic Games are all entered for Badminton: individual silver medallist Tom McEwen on Toledo de Kerser, world number one Oliver Townend with Ballaghmor Class plus new ride Swallow Springs, and Laura Collett with her great horse London 52. The reigning world champions, Ros Canter and Allstar B, will also

be competing, as will the reigning European champions, Nicola Wilson and JL Dublin. Other leading British names include Piggy French and Vanir Kamira, who won the last running of Badminton in 2019, and previous winners Pippa Funnell and William Fox-Pitt. New Zealander Jonelle Price, the world number two, riding her 2018 winner, Classic Moet, heads a strong international field of leading riders from the USA, Australia, Germany, France, Ireland, Canada and Italy. After a forced absence, due to the pandemic, it seems that Badminton is even more highly anticipated than ever. A thrilling contest and a wonderful occasion are assured. UNIQUELY PERSONAL an introduction to Foxy’s sponsored rider

Andrew Gould

I’m from Twickenham London so not many horses where I grew up but still managed to find a love for them. I left home at 16 and went into full time employment working for top trainer David Hunt; this is where my love of horses and Dressage really kicked in. I’ve been training with David for 28 years now and in the early years he really taught me the the discipline, commitment and passion needed for this phenomenal sport alongside what essential requirements and professionalism needed to excel in both training and competition.

Under David’s tuition I have competed on 5 u21 European championships winning National and international competitions and we are now planning to campaign towards Paris 2024. As we have an array of horses ranging from foals, the first experiences of our 2/3/4 year olds, right up to my top Grand Prix horses. Safety is by far the most important criteria. It is imperative, that I know they are safe, and every experience for them is an encouraging, positive and happy one.

As we use them daily, whether it be to the treadmill, educational experiences, vet visits and competitions; ease of use and practicality is an absolute necessity. Invariably myself, wife or a staff member will be on our own and therefore being able to handle the horses easily and succinctly is a must. As a family run business who have a wealth of experience in the equestrian world alongside the motor industry, both the range of models offered and chassis (ranging from second hand to brand new 3.5-7.5) ensures a brand that caters for all horses and riders.

The Foxy Stallion, Foxy Weekender and the Foxy Awayday are all models which have been designed in collaboration with the international dressage rider and trainer Andrew Gould. We are proud of the innovative approach taken to ensure safety is paramount and quality and practicality prevails.

vernight stays whilst out eventing can be made more luxurious if you have living accommodation within your horse lorry, or trailer items such as a flat screen TV to recap the day, and a luxury double bed to relax and recharge, ensuring a good night sleep for the days ahead. Walk-in showers, offering an invigorating way to instantly feel refreshed after a long, hard day, could be the perfect scenario for your stay away. However, if you prefer to keep things simple and solely use your transport for travelling, your horse equestrian centres will often cater for your every need with on-site facilities and food establishments, meaning

SET YOUR DREAMS IN MOTION

you can go ‘back to basics’ with a simple tent, camping stove and the relaxation of sitting under the stars. Whether your stay away is more of a camping or glamping experience, don’t forget about the fourlegged friends on board and their creature comforts. Remember the essentials such as full haynets, rugs, tack and boots – and not forgetting their treats (providing they have been on their best behaviour). Just like us, horses like to feel rejuvenated after a hard day’s work collecting rosettes

and would benefit from either an on-board or portable shower, washing the day’s sweat away. Team YHC like the best of both worlds and love nothing more than sitting out and reminiscing over the camping stove, but love to retreat to a hot shower and enjoy the home comforts of our horse lorry. We would love to hear about your travel experiences so drop us a line, not forgetting to include photos, to stories@ yourhorseandcountry.com. Keep an eye out to see if you’re featured in the next edition.

The noughties called

THEY WANT THEIR COMBATS BACK We look at some of the most popular fashions to make their way back into our 2022 wardrobes, writes Kathy Carter

A

h, the early noughties – when we watched Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in the Spiderman franchise, and anything with Sacha Baron Cohen in it. Girls Aloud, Atomic Kitten and S Club Juniors were in the charts, and many a teenage girl coveted their stripy highlights and low-rise jeans. Fashions do of course always come around again, and here, we look at some of the most popular fashions to make their way back into our 2022 wardrobes.

DARE TO BARE Most of us have spent the last couple of seasons with a lockdown fashion mentality – consider it a ‘covering up and dressing for comfort’ train of thought. Are you still ensconced in pyjamas and fluffy slippers and elasticated waistbands; or have you progressed to something more formal? If the fashion bibles are to be believed, not only should we be

dressing up, we should be doing it with a sensual vibe as well, this season. Yes folks; bare skin is reportedly back in 2022. In the women’s sector, the fashion mags report that our fashion choices for 2022 look to enhance and empower women, and make the customer feel positive; but true to themselves. Naturally, fashion is like a merry go round, and if you wait long enough, that out-dated piece in the back of your wardrobe will certainly come round again. (And if you don’t feel it is appropriate for your outlook or body shape now, why not pass it onto a family member? Pre-loved fashion is absolutely de rigour).

VERY VINTAGE Vintage pieces are definitely the biggest trend for this year, providing they are well-made pieces – craftsmanship is key. Looking at that aspect of enhancing and empowering women, the women’s liberation movement in the ’60s is definitely influencing current fashionistas. Skin is in - think high hemlines and  Pleated ‘kilt’ style skirts are a must for this years wardrobe

 Dig out your swinging minskirt for Spring

swinging miniskirts that come in colourpop shades – yes, bold, bright hues are definitely ‘in’. Pleated or ‘kilt’ styles in tartan patterns, with a nod to more ‘90’s styling, are also popular this season for work or daywear, and could be a preferred option, if you like your hemlines a little longer. For those individuals with pins to die for, the micro-mini – reminiscent of early 2000s 

red carpet looks, a la post-Disney and pre-motherhood Christina Aguilera – is also set for a revival. If you spend your time manhandling wheelbarrows and hay bales as a countryside enthusiast, there’s a good chance you may be willing to bare your wellhoned shoulders this season, which is good, because there’s a trend for cut out tops and dresses that showcase this area.

BEST FOOT FORWARD  The accessory to be seen in are pearls

If you’re an accessories fan, you’ll be pleased to see that statement shoes and bags are back, after a period when we felt somewhat apologetic about showing off these essentially unnecessary spends. Eyewatering platform shoes from the ‘70s, and party shoes with a ‘90s feel are definitely the shoes to be seen in this year. Even ‘80s styled pointy stilettos are fashionable again; and of course, the blocky noughties office shoe is (pleasingly!) making a come-back.

NAUGHTY NOUHTIES

 Corsets teamed with leather-look trousers are on trend in 2022

96 | SPRING 2022 Your Horse & Country Magazine - FASHION

Which leads us to the fact that: the noughties are back. And yes, this era was 20 years ago; not just a couple! This period represents, in the fashion designers’ nostalgic imaginations at least, shiny, flashy, rule-breaking outfits. Think rhinestonetrimmed denim, fluffy-trimmed cardigans, satin corsets teamed with leather-look trousers, and Alicia Silverstone-esque halterneck tops and wrap skirts. Check out girl band album covers from the day to either inspire you, or make you shudder with the realisation that it’s much comfier to have a warm back and a waistband that you can breathe in. Continuing the noughties theme, dare we say it, having been enjoying Bridget Jones pants and high waisted trousers and jeans for some time now; low waist trousers with (whisper it): thongs on show are reportedly also due for a comeback. (Presumably for individuals of a certain, young vintage?) If you could get it on a high street twenty years ago and it is still lurking

 Minimalist office clothes are ‘in’

in your closet, now’s the time to work out how that piece can be reimagined for the year 2022; if you want to be a fashion-first individual, that is.

BACK TO THE FUTURE Now we’re back to the office, workwear is having a resurgence. And yes, we’re talking a ‘90s and noughties resurgence. Think preppy, minimalist office clothes, but with a leg-baring element, if you’re brave enough. (If TV lawyer Ally McBeal would have worn it, you have the right image in mind.) Swap the form fitting tailored jacket for an oversized blazer however, to be bang on trend in 2022. We may mention Puffa jackets (using the branded version of the word, due to our allegiance with the coat’s originators!) each year when we talk about spring or autumn fashion; but that’s because these jackets really are here to stay, and are an outerwear staple. The non-horsey versions are brightly coloured this year – are you brave enough to rock neon pink or lime green, for example? In disappointing news, skinny jeans – which work so well in a pair of long leather country boots, and double up as yard-wear – are reportedly ‘out’ this season. Again as a throwback to the ‘60s and ‘70s, wide-leg trousers, flared pants bell-bottoms, with a nod to disco culture, are back in. (As yourself – what trousers would singer Harry Styles wear at a concert? There’s your inspiration). And while we’re talking about style icon Harry – take a leaf from his book, and unearth your Nan’s pearl necklace, as this is the accessory to be seen in this year – you can wear it with absolutely anything. FASHION

 Faeriecore and cottagecore are wistful styles centred around nature that are predicted to be big in the fashion world this year

is Vivienne Westwood’s ‘80s pearl choker design. One of the more scary blasts from the past making a tentative break for reinvention is the catsuit. While its more forgiving jumpsuit cousin waves a sad goodbye from the back of the wardrobe, the brash and brave catsuit is ready to flash some flesh this season. We can’t see this trend catching on at the yard or on a dog walk, but if you are feeling empowered, perhaps the office party is the place to unleash your inner catwoman?

COTTAGECORE A new word for fashionistas in the know is ‘cottagecore’ dressing. According to the Urban Dictionary, cottagecore is an aesthetic and fashion style inspired by romanticised rural and farm lifestyle interpretations. Think countryside scenery, nostalgic peasant dresses, rustic handmade crafts, and artisanal creations. It is actually quite a wistful style, being centred around ideas of a simple life in harmony with nature; something we are ‘all for’, at this countryside title! Cottagecore actually fits in nicely with the modern virtues of second-hand shopping, thrifting and being sustainable. Think about a life before mobile phones, perhaps with a Larkins or Enid Blyton vibe, and you will have this nostalgic look ‘nailed’. Take up baking with grandma’s vintage dishware, and a painstaking embroidery habit, to really embody the trend. (To delve further into this subculture, research faeriecore, an associated aesthetic surrounding the

theme of nature, soft pastels, butterflies, magic and flowers).

THE BRIDGERTON EFFECT Fortunately, amongst some of the more crazy predictions in the world of fashion, the Bridgerton effect is also reportedly due to take hold (again) this season – although mainly

 The Bridgerton effect is expected to influence wedding fashions

for occasion-wear. Think 18th and 19th century, up-market looks with a surely-thisisn’t-historically-accurate twist. Netflix’s period drama is set in (a fantasy version of) London’s regency era, so the clothes are all about social status. For dress-wear, think empire lines, feathers, pearls, hair ribbons, corsets – fancy accessories to make any potential bride stand out from the crowd. Actually, this style would really suit modern wedding attire – think embroidery and embellishment, ruffled lace or puff sleeves, and decadent jewels. (As an alternative to the aforementioned stilettos, you must consider dainty ballet slippers, if Regency-era shoes are on your shopping list.)

WHAT NOT TO WEAR And to conclude, in case you’re wondering, here are a few of the ‘what not to wear’ items that the fashion editors maintain are off-plan for 2022: big knickers; leggings and tunics; ponchos; fishnet tights, Crocs (you didn’t ever wear those last two together, right?); scrunchies; high-waisted Mum jeans; tracksuits; baggy cargo-pants or combat trousers (especially with flappy ties and zip-pulls that would only get caught up in a shopping trolley or office chair mechanism, if we’re honest); t-shirts over a long sleeved top; things with braces (sorry, comfy dungarees); and statement belts that don’t hold anything up. And finally, chunky, stripey hair-highlights, a la Pop Idol girl bands. C’mon, you’re better than that. 

CUTTING BEDDING COSTS – BUT NOT QUALITY INCREDIBLY EASY • EXCEPTIONALLY ECONOMICAL • ULTRA ECO-FRIENDLY STRAWMAX straw pellets are a

great new equine bedding created

For all conscientious owners, the most important deciding factor when considering STRAWMAX pellets is that they help you create a healthy and hygienic stable environment for your horses.

STRAWMAX pellets are especially helpful for time-pressed, value-conscious owners. They’re very long-lasting, they isolate urine in small patches which minimises waste, and that makes them exceptionally affordable.

• Minimal airborne dust • Huge volume & depth • Comfort & support • Super absorbent • Suppresses odour

• Very easy to use • Low on waste • Big on economy • Small muckheap • Fast composting

by Bedmax, the UK’s leading manufacturer of equine bedding. STRAWMAX is a very timely, cost effective new option for owners at a time of steeply rising costs. It’s made from locally sourced high quality straw, and it combines all the equine health benefits you would expect from Bedmax but with exceptional ease of use and economy. And unlike straw, STRAWMAX comes in handy 15kg bags through your local equine retailer, so it’s always available, reliably consistent, and easy to handle,

All Bedmax beddings including STRAWMAX now come with the new BETA NOPS Bedding logo. You can read more about what this means for you and your horses at: bedmaxshavings.com/nops

store and use in the stable.

6-8 bags of STRAWMAX make a full bed 20-24cms deep in a standard 12 x 12 stable. A bucket of water per bag will swell them to 3 x volume but still leave them super absorbent to soak up urine. Maintaining an optimum bed should only require about 1 bag per week.

“I would definitely encourage any horse owner who is conscious of time, cost and waste to give it a try. My horse and I give it a big thumbs up!” Farmweek – Horseweek

No gut, No Horse Problems of the hind gut The old saying ‘No foot, no horse’ should also be paired with ‘No gut, no horse’ as many equine health complaints have their origins in the malaise of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The hind gut of the horse is the largest proportion of the GI tract and includes the cecum and colon. Billions of protozoa, fungi and bacteria reside there, responsible for providing energy for the horse by converting structural carbohydrates into fatty acids. This is quite a sensitive environment; micro-organism populations can be easily unbalanced resulting in a range of health conditions.

devonhaylage.co.uk 01404 813100

How does the hind gut become unbalanced? Preferably, most water-soluble carbohydrates and some proteins have already been broken down and absorbed before reaching the hind gut. If too much water-soluble carbohydrate enters the hind gut and is fermented, a proliferation of lactic acid producers rapidly shifts the pH resulting in acidosis, killing off the beneficial bacteria population. Toxins from the dying bacteria populations are released into the bloodstream. An excess of watersoluble carbohydrates can come from too much sugar or starch in the diet. Sudden diet changes can also cause digestive upset along with insufficient fibre intake.

What health issues could this cause? The most obvious sign that the hind gut is not functioning as it should is loose droppings, but more severe acidosis can cause diarrhoea leading to dehydration. Colic or even mild abdominal discomfort showing a degree of gut inflammation can also be observed, these horses may be unwilling to work, or dislike being girthed up. Another common problem is leaky gut

syndrome, whereby the special cells which line the GI tract creating a barrier against stomach acid are damaged. This allows pathogens to leak into the bloodstream and create inflammation within the body leading to a range of long-term health conditions. It is this release of endotoxins into the bloodstream which causes inflammation in the laminae of the hoof resulting in laminitis. Horses with EMS or Cushings’ Disease are particularly vulnerable. Low grade chronic leaky guts have also been linked to Insulin Resistance and laminitis risk in general.

What can we do to keep the hind gut healthy? The simplest way to prevent hind gut issues is to consistently feed plenty of nutritionally suitable fibre and restrict bucket feeds (containing starch and sugar) to only when necessary. Always make gradual diet changes and support the gut biome further by providing a range of different plants and herbs in the diet. The integrity of the hind gut relies on the constant passage of quality fibre which feeds those crucial populations of gut microbes. Devon Haylage is consistently high in quality throughout the year and is annually tested for both the nutritional

and mineral levels, providing horses with the perfect high fibre, high dry matter forage, with low sugar and starch levels, to help keep hind guts functioning optimally. Ensuring your horse has a reliable, nutritionally suitable, and consistent quality forage throughout the year which prevents sudden diet changes can be achieved with our pallet deliveries direct to your stable. With four types to choose from we can cater for every type of horse or pony and are happy to discuss your requirements. Brewer’s yeast is an effective and cheap supplement which supports bacteria populations whilst providing additional B vitamins, which can be fed alongside forage to provide additional gut support. Horses kept in modern environments may not be able to forage on a range of different plants and herbs which gut bacteria love! Studies suggest that horses fed a range of different plants have more diverse gut bacteria populations which can help to keep the gut biome balanced and help protect against many conditions including EMS. Many plants ranging from blackberry and hawthorn leaves through to fat hen and dandelions offer impressive properties.

Laminitis - diet control With Spring just around the corner, Joanna Palmer, nutritionist at Allen & Page, offers feeding advice suitable for your horse’s specific nutritional needs to ensure your horse receives a balanced diet Joanna Palmer, Equine Nutritionist at whilst minimising the risk of laminitis. Allen & Page Quality Horse Feeds

Feed a low starch and sugar diet Horse and ponies at risk of laminitis should only be offered feeds with a combined starch and sugar level of 10% or less. Veteran Light and Fast Fibre are two feeds from Allen & Page’s Barley & Molasses Free Range that have suitably low starch and sugar levels, making them ideal choices for laminitics. As well as being fully balanced with vitamins and minerals, both Fast Fibre and Veteran Light are high in fibre and free from whole cereal grains and added sugars, making them more natural for your horse than traditional cereal-based mixes and cubes. Additionally, as both feeds are low in energy, they are ideal for good doers who hold their weight well. Their low starch and sugar levels also make them ideal choices for horses and ponies that show fizzy and excitable behaviour, even on low energy mixes and cubes. Instead of starchy cereals, Fast Fibre and Veteran Light use fibre and oil ingredients as sources of slowrelease energy to help avoid this unwanted behaviour.

feed hay that has been soaked for 12-16 hours. Soaking hay removes water soluble carbohydrates, making it much lower in sugar and calories than unsoaked hay. Being lower in sugar means more hay can be fed to satisfy the horse or pony’s need for a near constant supply of fibre, particularly when grazing is restricted.

Maintain ideal bodyweight It is well recognised that overweight and obese horses and ponies are more at risk of developing laminitis. By maintaining a healthy weight and body condition score through exercise and the right diet, the risk of laminitis developing or recurring in future can be lessened.

Restrict grazing Sugar rich spring grass is often the prime culprit in causing laminitis in susceptible animals, so restricting grazing is an important management tool at this time of year. Strip grazing, implementing a tracked grazing system, and the use of a correctly fitted grazing muzzle can all significantly reduce a horse or pony’s grass intake whilst helping to maintain natural grazing behaviour.

A combination of feeding a low energy balanced feed with combined sugar and starch levels less than 10% like Fast Fibre or Veteran Light, restricting grazing for good doers, and increasing exercise, will all help to burn calories, keep waistlines in check and reduce the chance of laminitis.

Avoid frosted grass Frosted grass on a sunny day can be particularly high in sugar. As some parts of the UK can experience overnight frosts well into May, keep a close eye on your local weather forecast and avoid turning out those at risk of laminitis until the frost has melted.

Maintain fibre intake Even when grazing is restricted, fibre should form the basis of every horse or pony’s diet to keep the digestive system healthy and functioning efficiently. For those that are overweight or prone to laminitis,

LIVING WITH LEPTOSPIROSIS A deadly and highly contagious disease, often transmitted through the urine of a rat, Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects both humans and animals

U

nfortunately, this winter has seen Team YHC hit with heart ache after heart ache, starting with what had originally gone unnoticed, we gradually became aware of an aggressive and fast, persistent rodent problem building in and around the farm, the odd rat here and there soon became an established colony reaching well over 100 often coming out at both day and night in numbers ranging from 9 to 12 at a time. A well-constructed pest control plan in place we really felt that we were making headway in controlling the problem early into the winter months, that is until Dexter our 7-year-old Dalmatian began to show signs of being under the weather, on Christmas day Dexter was admitted to the emergency vets where he spent 11 days in isolation with tests proving a positive test of Leptospirosis more commonly known as Weil’s disease. A deadly and highly contagious disease sometimes carried and transmitted through the urine of a rat. Dexter was fighting for his life, not eating for 6 days and jaundice taking hold whilst both is liver and kidneys began to shut down in a losing fight to the disease. Our bright and bouncy boy became a skeleton of himself hardly having the energy to lift his head. He was pumped with

antibiotics 24 hours a day for the full 11 days with IV lines pumping 4 times his daily amount of fluids into his weakening body, tubes placed for feeding were rejected and Dexter’s prognosis was not good. After days of sickening worry and sleepless nights, Dexter found the strength to take a single lick of some warm cat food, with a body full of antisickness medication he managed to keep it down and as days progressed into weeks he slowly found his appetite, the medication went from intravenous to oral and Dexter was finally allowed home, as we welcomed our patient home with lots of love and small but regular feeding he continues to show signs of recovery and even manages to play with his favourite ball and give a halfhearted chase to Lottie the cat when he’s feeling up to it. Whilst his future is looking brighter and healthier, I am relieved to write, we really aren’t out of the woods just yet, Leptospirosis really is a highly contagious disease that can take many weeks to die and leave the body, a disease that sadly dogs are

 Poorly Dexter recovering from Leptospirosis

very susceptible to should they become in contact with it, this having meant separating Dexter from the rest of his four-legged family, of whom I know he misses so much. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects humans and animals. It is caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. In humans, it can cause a wide range of symptoms, some of which may be mistaken for other diseases. Some infected persons, however, may have no symptoms at all. Without treatment, Leptospirosis can lead to kidney damage, meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord), liver failure, respiratory distress, and even death.

INFECTION The bacteria that cause leptospirosis are spread through the urine of infected animals, which can get into water or soil and can survive there for weeks to months. Many different kinds of wild and domestic animals carry the bacterium. These can include, but are not limited to: l Cattle

MAN’S BEST FRIEND

l Pigs l Horses l Dogs l Rodents l Wild animals When these animals are infected, they may have no symptoms of the disease. Infected animals may continue to excrete the bacteria into the environment continuously or occasionally, for a few months up to several years. Humans can become infected through: l Contact with urine (or other body fluids, except saliva) from infected animals. l Contact with water, soil, or food contaminated with the urine of infected animals. The bacteria can enter the body through skin or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth), especially if the skin 

is broken from a cut or scratch. Drinking contaminated water can also cause infection. Outbreaks of leptospirosis are usually caused by exposure to contaminated water, such as floodwaters. Person to person transmission is rare.

PREVENTION IN PETS To help prevent Leptospirosis infection, keep rodent problems (rats, mice, or other animal pests) under control. Rodents can carry and spread the bacteria that causes this disease. Get your pet vaccinated against leptospirosis. The vaccine does not provide 100% protection. This is because there are many strains (types) of leptospires (the bacteria that causes Leptospirosis), and the vaccine does not provide immunity against all strains. It is important to get your pet vaccinated again even if it gets leptospirosis because it can still get infected with a different strain of leptospires. Pet owners should also take steps to prevent themselves and others from becoming infected with the disease due to an infected pet. The primary mode of transmission of leptospirosis from pets to humans is through direct or indirect contact with contaminated animal tissues, organs, or urine. In some instances, shedding of leptospires in the urine may persist for as long as 3 months after infection because of inadequate or lack of treatment. Always contact your veterinarian and your physician if you have concerns about a possible exposure to an infected animal. In addition, be sure to follow the below prevention guidelines: l Do not handle or come in contact with urine, blood, or tissues from your

infected pet before it has received proper treatment. l If you need to have contact with animal tissues or urine, wear protective clothing, such as gloves and boots, especially if you are occupationally at risk (veterinarians, farm workers, and sewer workers). l As a general rule, always wash your hands after handling your pet or anything that might have your pet’s excrement on it. l If you are cleaning surfaces that may be contaminated or have urine from an infected pet on them, use an antibacterial cleaning solution or a solution of 1 part household bleach in 10 parts water. l Make sure that your infected pet takes all of its medicine and follow up with your veterinarian. If you have a rodent problem or believe your animals are at risk to illness or disease you should always contact your vet straight away.

DANGERS IN THE GARDEN. Whilst you may find the majority of canine dangers occur when on a farm or out walking in the countryside, there are many dangers that lurk in your own back garden. Take a look at our list of hidden dangers below to help keep your pet safe.

PLANT POISONS Many plants can be toxic to pets, some are highly poisonous, whilst others may only cause a tummy upset. If your dog is

inquisitive, you will need to be ultra-vigilant as common garden plants can be extremely dangerous, even in small quantities. These include, but not exclusively, daffodil bulbs, foxgloves, ivy, lily of the valley, sweet peas, wisteria and tulip bulbs. If your dog chews any of these plants, seek veterinary help.

MOULDY FOODS If you compost or recycle your food waste, make sure you keep them in a sealed container that your pet cannot get access to. Toxins found in mouldy dairy products, bread and nuts can quickly cause muscle tremors and seizures.

PRUNUS SPECIES  Bright and bouncy Dexter before contracting Leptospirosis

If the seeds or stones of any of the prunus family (Apricots, nectarines, damsons, cherries, plums, and cherry) are chewed, they can cause a toxic effect as the stones contain traces of the poison cyanide. Effects of this type of poison can occur rapidly and can include frothing at the mouth, large pupils, breathing difficulties and sudden death.

TOADS

The venom found in the skin of toads can be poisonous to pets

The venom found in the skin of toads can be poisonous to pets who bite them or lick them. Toads are most commonly found in warmer months, or after the rain, and their poison can cause pain and excessive salivation. In more severe cases it can increase the breathing rate of your pet and possibly lead to fits. Toads also commonly eat slugs and snails, so they can also be a source of lungworm for dogs. If you think your dog has ingested something poisonous, please speak to your vet straight away. Make sure you pass as much information onto the vet as you can about what your pet has or could have eaten. n

10 TIPS FOR A LESS ‘EVENTFUL’ EVENTING YEAR! 1

CHECK YOUR TACK AND EQUIPMENT

A breakage during the event is not only embarrassing – it can be dangerous too. Check the stitching, leather and wear – especially if you always ride in those reins or stirrup leathers – are they worn out?

2

BE BEST FRIENDS WITH YOUR FARRIER

A lost, twisted or loose shoe can scupper your event – having a farrier who’ll turn out on the eve of your competition is worth their weight in gold. They can also be your best friend if you ask them to use a cross-sync tool when putting in your stud holes – the chances of you struggling to put a stud in at the event is greatly reduced.

3

ARE YOU LEGAL?

Rules are in place for your safety or that of your horse. Ensure your whips, spurs, hats, body protector and neck strap meet the requirements. Salute Equestrian’s Click & Connect Neck Strap Ultimate Set is designed specifically for competition use as it connects to the saddle or breastplate and is versatile to fit no matter what tack you use increasing your safety, your horse’s safety and crucially your partnership and performance too.

4

HAVE A MAP

Don’t just leave it to your sat-nav – it can’t be trusted not to take you off piste. Look at a map and make sure your route is the most horse-friendly and then keep it in your vehicle in case you should have to divert en-route. Leaving the event and secretary contacts in the page will give you an easy reference for future – and someone to call if you’re going to be late and need them to adjust your start times.

5

INVEST IN SOME OVERALLS

Cover your competition clothes with overalls. These not only keep your clothes clean especially when walking the course or studding up but it’ll keep you more comfortable. Changing into your competition clothes in the cooler months is freezing and on summer days, trying to change when you are already hot and sticky is hideous. Three Donkeys offer overalls that unzip at the waist and are waterproof too.

6

COMPETITION NUMBERS

Your printer will likely jam, run out of ink or you’ll run out of paper on the eve of your event – just as you’ve been issued your

details. Reusable number bib inserts – like bridle numbers – slot in to your number bib – Salute Equestrian provides Number Bib Inserts that fit into all numbers.

7

CHECK YOUR HORSE WHEN YOU ARRIVE

8

YOU ARE WHO YOU SAY YOU ARE!

When you arrive at the event, give your horse a leg stretch and drink. He can graze for a few minutes to clear his nasal passages of any debris that couldn’t drain out while travelling, you can ensure he’s suitably rugged, and make sure he’s not incurred any injuries, or lost or spread a shoe during the journey.

Ever turned up at the steward in the wrong bib? You’ve picked up your friend’s or you’ve two horses and donned the wrong one. Salute Equestrian’s Smart Number Bib can be personalised with your name or horse name so you always wear the right one – and if you do still go wrong, their number bib inserts mean you can change the number there and then. In fact, because the bib has clips at the top, it means you can remove it without taking off

your hat (and also put it on like that – how often have you got ready to go and then, doh! Forgotten your bib!)

9

SPARE CLOTHES

Keep a bag of spare clothes in your vehicle – spare breeches and shirt incase you should fall in the mud walking the course or between rides, and spare loungewear, a washbag and a phone charger in case it’s something more serious and you need to visit the hospital. You won’t want – or may not be able – to get back into your tight competition clothes and you’ll want to freshen up.

SEASONAL MARES Q&A Nettex Equine is helping you understand your ‘moody mares’. WHEN DO MARES COME INTO SEASON? To avoid having foals in winter, mares are seasonally polyoestrus, which means they only come into season during spring, summer and autumn. The stimulation of her seasons is directly related to day length, and as the days begin to draw out in spring, she will re-commence regular cycles.

WHAT IS A NORMAL CYCLE IN A MARE? A mare’s cycle lasts 21 days and is divided into two periods; dioestrus, the first 16 days, and oestrus, which usually lasts 4-7 days. Oestrus is when a mare is in heat and receptive to the stallion. The hormone progesterone is produced throughout the dioestrus phase (the first 16 days). From day 17-21, progesterone decreases and oestrogen increases. Oestrogen causes the ‘in-season’ behaviour we associate with mares.

 Mares only come into season during spring, summer and autumn.

HOW CAN I TELL IF MY MARE’S SEASONS ARE AFFECTING HER? Compared to geldings, mares can often get a bit of hard time when it comes to their behaviour. It is important to remember that these behaviours are not a result of your mare behaving “badly” but simply is her body’s way of dealing with a natural process. There are ways in which horse owners can help to manage any undesirable behaviours to improve enjoyment of their mare when she is in season. If you notice any of the following behavioural signs each month, it could be related to her seasons: • Aggressive/grumpy • Oversensitive when being touched, groomed and tacked up • Increased urination and/or ‘squirting’ • Poor performance when ridden – lethargic, distracted and unwilling to work • Biting • Kicking • Squealing • Winking • Low-grade colic • Pain response to pressure in the lumbar region of their back

WHY IS MY MARE AFFECTED BY HER SEASONS? It is hard to say why some mares respond more to their hormonal changes than others. It is important to remember that they are all individuals, and much like women, some won’t have or display symptoms, whereas others can really suffer. We as horse owners must also treat ‘hormonal mares’ with kindness – just like stallions, they too are ‘entire’, and driven by regular breeding urges. While pain is difficult to objectify, increased sensation to being touched

and low-grade colic suggests a level of discomfort.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP MY HORMONAL MARE? To help identify where the change in behaviour arises, keep a diary. If you notice similar behavioural patterns which last five days every three weeks, you can be more confident in attributing this to her seasons. Supplements can be used to significant effect in some mares. These help to calm mares and help with challenging oestrus behaviour. It is essential to check the ingredients carefully when deciding which supplement to use. If you are very worried about your mare, seek veterinary advice to rule out any other causes for behavioural change, such as pain, infection or reproductive problems.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A SUPPLEMENT? Extensive research suggests that Wheatgerm Extract can support mares with undesirable oestrus behaviour. Feeding Wheatgerm Extract to mares has been shown to help with oestrus related behaviours such as biting, rearing, poor performance, frequent urination and striking. Supplements with B-Vitamins are also desirable, as these are well known for their help with supporting healthy maintenance of the nervous system. It is important to check the ingredients of herbal supplements in competition horses as some may contain FEI banned substances. Ingredients that are safe to use include ones such as Chasteberry, Vervain and Clover, commonly used in human and equine calmer supplements for their beneficial calming properties. 

Say Hello! shoplister-global.com

Planning a diagnostic-led worm control programme By Dr Corrine Austin (Austin Davis Biologics) All horses are exposed to worms while grazing, but how we control these parasites is essential to horse health and performance. Most horse owners are aware of testing to determine whether their horse needs deworming. The tests comprise faecal worm egg counts (FEC) for redworm/roundworm detection and EquiSal Tapeworm saliva testing to detect tapeworm infections (standard FEC methods are unreliable for tapeworm). Until recently encysted small redworm larvae have remained undetectable as FEC only determines the presence of egg laying adult worms. This has meant that routine winter moxidectin treatment has become recommended practice to target potentially life-threatening burdens of small redworm encysted larvae. A new small redworm blood test was commercialised in 2019 which detects all stages of the small redworm life cycle, including the allimportant encysted larval phase. Together, these tests offer a complete worm control programme for common horse worms Figure 1.

using diagnostic information, this is known as ‘diagnostic-led worm control’ (see Figure 1 for common worms in horses). Essentially, testing is used to tell you whether your horse needs deworming or not.

Why should you use testing to determine whether you should use dewormers or not? Gone are the days of routinely administering dewormers to every horse and hoping for the best. That strategy is out-dated as it has caused widespread drug resistance in worms - meaning that worms are able to survive the killing effects of dewormers and remain in place after treatment, which can lead to disease and in worst cases, death. To reduce the risk of further resistance occurring, we need to ensure that dewormers are only used when they are genuinely needed – when testing detects that horses have a worm

Common horse worms in the UK

burden requiring treatment. Regular testing also helps identify horses likely to be more susceptible to infection and thus at risk of disease in the future.

How to plan your horse’s worm control programme Figure 2 illustrates a seasonal diagnosticled worm control programme that can be put in place for most adult horses in the UK.

Tapeworm programme The UK Vet deworming guidelines state that blood or EquiSal Tapeworm saliva testing should be conducted to detect tapeworm burdens. The publication states,

“ “

The traditional approach, to routinely treat for tapeworms annually or six-monthly without diagnostic testing, is obsolete. Treatment should only be administered to adult horses in response to positive serum or salivary antibody testing.

Figure 2 highlights that testing should be carried out every six months, preferably during spring and autumn. The saliva test provides a low, borderline or moderate/ high diagnosis and deworming is recommended for horses diagnosed as borderline or moderate/high.

Redworm and roundworm programme FEC analysis should be carried out for measuring worm egg shedding throughout March to October (Figure 2) for detection of adult redworm (strongyles, including small redworm) and roundworm (ascarids). It is recommended that at least three FEC tests should be conducted to monitor for egg shedding in spring and summer periods. Horses with high egg shedding (for example, those excreting >200 eggs per gram of dung) should be treated with a dewormer, ideally effective against adult strongyles. 

 The new small redworm blood test can now be used to detect the presence of small redworm (including encysted larval stages) at a time when previously an annual treatment with moxidectin was recommended. The optimum testing period for these small redworm stages is September to December, but if this is missed, testing should still be considered until April the following year (Figure 2). Before the small redworm blood test can be carried out, your veterinarian will assess each horse’s risk of small redworm infection. If signs of active infection are evident, such as previous and consistent high FEC results, or is in a high-risk environment (for example, high herd turnover, high exposure levels and poor paddock management), they may recommend treating with moxidectin without testing. To get your horse blood tested, contact your veterinary practice for advice.

As no new dewormers are being developed for horses in the foreseeable future, control plans must aim to maintain horse health whilst protecting the currently effective dewormers. You should work with your veterinary surgeon or a Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) to design and implement an appropriate worm control plan.

Roundworms (ascarids) are more common in young stock and can be detected using FEC.

The most common horse tapeworm, Anoplocephala perfoliata, predominantly attaches to the ileocaecal junction in the gut, a narrow section between the small intestine and the caecum, so it is no surprise that large burdens can cause health problems, including significant gut inflammation and blockages, leading to either acute or low grade recurring colic symptoms.

*Commercialised by Austin Davis Biologics Ltd, providers of EquiSal Tapeworm testing, and developed by Prof. Jacqui Matthews’ group at Moredun Research Institute (funded by The Horse Trust).

R

The most important worms that infect horses are the strongyles (redworms), classified as large and small redworm. Large redworms used to be important as they can cause life-threatening colic, but in the UK, these are now uncommon in adult horses as they are very sensitive to the most widely used dewormers, moxidectin and ivermectin. On the other hand, small redworms (cyathostomins) are extremely common and most grazing horses are infected. Healthy adult horses usually have low burdens, but when large burdens (several million worms) occur, horses can develop a fatal colitis which is difficult to treat. For this reason, it is important that large burdens of small redworm are avoided. Unfortunately, small redworms are expert at developing resistance to dewormers, so control plans now need to balance the requirement to ensure horses do not build up extreme burdens with the need to preserve dewormer effectiveness. It is especially important to preserve moxidectin dewormer for strategic use against the encysted small redworm larvae that cause life-threatening disease as this is the only compound that has a high effect against these larvae.

Common horse worms

Note: Moxidectin is the only licenced drug to effectively kill encysted stages. Although 5-day fenbendazole treatment is licensed to kill encysted stages, there is widespread resistance to this product so without knowing the worm population sensitivity status to this type of dewormer, its use would not be recommended.
