The boat race is a regatta duel between the rowing teams of Oxford and Cambridge Universities; the event represents one of the world’s oldest amateur sporting contests. It is hosted by the City Of Oxford Rowing Cub, and takes place this year over the weekend of 20th and 21st August in West London, between Putney and Mortlake. The boat race contest reportedly dates back to 1829 as a result of a challenge between two friends, Charles Wordsworth (Oxford) and Charles Merrivale (Cambridge.) Commencing on 27th June, the two-week long event that is The Championships, Wimbledon, more commonly shortened to ‘Wimbledon’, is the oldest and arguably the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. It has been held at the All England Club in London since 1877, and Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event in the world played on grass. Excitingly, 2022 marks the first year of the 14 and Under Junior Championships for children, which will take place in the second week of the event. Ball Boys and Girls are drawn from schools in local London boroughs, and the role is considered to be a high accolade. (Whether you’re spectating or watching on the telly, don’t forget your strawberries and cream, a dish synonymous with the classic sporting event.)

The term ‘Sunday roast’ came from the said origin of this dish, where it followed the village Sunday church service. What makes this meal so quintessentially British is the ‘yorkie’ pudding that goes with the meat.
The famous Punch and Judy show, a mini theatrical play performed by a single puppeteer in a small tent, originated in Europe and seemingly first graced British shores in in 1662 in Covent Garden, London, when Samuel Pepys wrote about the marionette show in his diary; the main character was a fool called Punchinello. By the eighteenth century, English showmen were using glove puppets instead of marionettes, and the Italian Punchinello had been shortened to Punch. The shows were especially popular in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, and showmen would collect tips from spectators gathered at popular seaside resorts.
5.ROAST DINNER
Morris dancing is a celebration of English folk dance and music, performed at seasonal festivals and holidays to celebrate the fertility of summer. It’s based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers. Morris men and women usually wear bell pads on their shins, and dance with sticks and handkerchiefs. The dancers are commonly accompanied by musicians playing instruments including the pipe and tabor (a three-hole pipe and small drum), the fiddle, concertina, mouth organ, penny whistle and even the banjo. The earliest known English written mention of Morris dancing is dated to 1448; the modern organisation ‘The Morris Ring’ was formed in 1934, and is an association of some 180 clubs.
Putney Bridge, which has great views of the two crews right from the very start of the race, and then walk to Bishop’s Park and catch the rest of the race on the big screen.
The British population is one of the largest tea consumers in the world, and tea became especially popular in the eighteenth century when every social class, not just the upper classes, made drinking tea a daily habit. The British Empire Tea Bureau released an instructional film about the proper serving of tea in the late 1940s, however there’s still much controversy over how to make the perfect cuppa, from milk usage, the type of pot used, and the perfect steeping time.
First recorded in the book ‘The Whole Duty of a Woman’ in 1737 as ‘dripping pudding’, Yorkshire pudding continued to be written about by leading food writers including Hannah Glasse in 1747 and Mrs. Beeton in 1866. The Yorkshire-based brand Aunt Bessie’s launched their own ready-made version in 1995.

The iconic ice cream vans enjoyed their heyday in the 1960s, bringing delicious treats to families in their own freezer-less homes, but are still popular today. What is your favourite jingle? Greensleeves or Pop Goes the Weasel are the tunes of our childhoods, although today there’s a much wider variety of tuneage. The ice-cream cone is said to have originated in America at the 1904 World’s Fair in St Louis, Missouri; however we in the UK have taken the idea and run with it, in our quaint, colourful vans that roam the streets; always just before tea-time, to parents’ chagrin. Popularised by the Wimbledon tennis tournament, who serve up a whopping 140,000 portions every year at the event, the treat of sweet and juicy strawberries (at the time, likely the wild Alpine variety), was said to have been first enjoyed at 16th and 17th century royal banquets. It seems that the French first developed the more modern dish that we know and love, when they added Chantilly cream to the menu at the turn of the 20th century. Sunny days and longer cooler nights are something that we all really look forward too, making the summer months a firm favourite time of year. This year we won’t just be rejoicing the hopeful warmer weather and longer days, were really excited to be celebrating Her Majesty the Queen becoming the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after seventy years of service. Her Majesty having acceded to the throne on the 6th of February 1952 when she was just 25 years old, becoming the second-longest serving sovereign monarch in history. With such an achievement being worthy of celebration there will be many celebratory events and activities taking place throughout the United Kingdom, Commonwealth and further afield in the months leading up to the special extended bank holiday weekend and after, making the year of 2022 one to remember.

Not only does Her Majesty love to ride horses, but she also owns and breeds thoroughbred horses for racing, a love she inherited from her father, King George VI. This keen interest in racehorses has seen her become one of the most successful horse race owners in the history of The Royal Family having horses entered in to well over 2,500 races. Although the Queen never places a bet on the race, she takes great pleasure in watching her horses run, and often win, in many prestigious events! As an owner, she enjoys visiting the horses and regularly inspects them to spot potential stars among them. She will note traits of interest even from a very young age and keep tabs on the progress each horse makes during its training. Many of the Queen’s race winners went on to produce the next generation of race competitors, each generation improving on the one before, which still delights the Queen as she

The Queen’s equine passion has rubbed off on many other family members, as all her children naturally took to horse riding in some form. Both Princess Anne and her daughter Zara love to ride and have both pursued a career as British Equestrians and Olympians, whereas Prince Charles and his sons Prince William and Harry enjoy the equine sport of Polo when they can. The Queen’s granddaughter, Lady Louise Windsor, has followed in her grandfather’s footsteps with her love of carriage driving, and has inherited many of his carriages to progress her sport.

Backing young horses with respect
The approach is calm, respectful, systematic and with the welfare and the soundness of the horse at the forefront at all times. No rushed jobs or forced systems used here. The horse must be given the time to understand and to develop the muscle and strength to carry the rider with ease and confidence and in a good non damaging posture, so that he or she has a future. Long-reining, see on left, is very important at this stage. So much can be achieved on straight lines with no damage to weak young joints. Submission is not achieved through exhaustion but through understanding and the ability to be able to work with us and not against us.
A sane and sensible horse that will do a bit of everything and will not leave you over horsed. A true family horse with personality.

He led after the dressage which I don’t normally like to do as it piles the pressure on. I had a pole in the show jumping which dropped me to third, it was the best thing that could have happened as it made me so hungry for the time cross country.
I loved the concept of the amateur rider getting to compete at such a prestigious venue. I found it really competitive, but in a friendly way. I became really determined to come back and win it the following year –which we did!
The win has really helped me to pursue my career in horses, I am now always looking for events that I can qualify for.

Q&A FESTIVAL OF BRITISH EVENTING 2022 @FESTIVALOFBE@FESTIVALOFBE@FESTIVALOFEVENTING
FIVE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Gatcombe is a very special place. It has so much history, even when I was growing up back in New Zealand, it was one of the events we had all heard of – an iconic, famous venue. You need an athletic horse to cope with the undulating terrain. It is a true cross country test, which is a nice variation of the sport, as it can sometimes be more about the dressage or the show jumping. I have ridden Molly there before in the British Open in 2015, when we were second to Chris Burton. We just had to come back and go one better!
Speed and stamina. I loved it on her but it is horses for courses – you have to have the right horse. It is a roller coaster of a ride, and it suits Molly down to the ground.

The Festival also hosts the RoR/NTF Retrained Racehorse Event Championship, sponsored by the National Trainers Federation, which is exclusively open to horses that are finding a new career in eventing after previously racing.
Having completed the dressage and show jumping phases of the event earlier, Sunday afternoon sees competitors run cross country with the top ten jumping in reverse order, keeping the tension and excitement running right until the last horse comes through the finish
It is quite local to us, so it is easy. More often than not the sun is shining so we try to bring the family along. As it is a championship event we only take horses that are true contenders and so we have more time to enjoy the shopping, entertainment and all that the show has to offer.
in the festival experience, why not stay in the caravan park? Only a short stroll from the main field, you won’t miss a moment of this unique summer festival experience.
WHY DO YOU THINK THE FESTIVAL SUITS CLASSIC MOET?
That is one of the unique things about the festival, the bowl creates a real vibe around the place. Also being the first weekend in August, it is often blazed in sunshine creating a carnival atmosphere – going in reverse order means you don’t have to wait for the result and ads to the excitement too.
I would love to think she might be able to do it again. She is 19 now so we take it one event at a time. She looks as good as ever right now, so we will see.
Five minutes with Jonelle Price, winner of The Magic Millions British Open in 2019, riding Classic Moet
WILL YOU RETURN WITH CLASSIC MOET THIS YEAR?
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WIN THE TITLE?
The Magic Millions British Open is one of the most prestigious titles in the sport of eventing, attracting the most well-established horses and riders on the world stage.
The terrain of the cross country at Gatcombe Park really suits her – she is extraordinary, I don’t think I will ever sit on another horse like her. She sees a hill coming and she pins her ears flat back and tears up there like it is her favourite thing in the world to do. She doesn’t give the fences masses of room and she is not the prettiest over a fence, but she is very aerodynamic. She was the fastest time of
under go free.
Follow the festival on social media, using the hashtag #FBE2022:
It was a bit of a relief really as she is well known for her pace across country. Her speed is her USP and she absolutely loves to tear away from a fence, so on paper it should be her event. It was a golden moment to finally nail it! It is one off the bucket list!
The TopSpec Challenge for The Corinthian Cup, which launched in 2015, is a restricted amateur novice championship. It is a true novice test and, in keeping with the grassroots nature, riders must not have completed an intermediate class in the current or preceding five years making sure that the competition is as fair as possible for amateur riders.

overall summer forecast for 2022 is now pointing towards at least four or five major heatwaves. Meteorologists are describing the likelihood of a summer scorcher! With that in mind, many of us will want to wear comfortable clothing that doesn’t make us overheat, as we go about our daily lives.
Keep cool and carry on
If you haven’t experimented with it yet, chambray is a lovely alternative to denim, in the summer. Traditionally made in a simple plain-weave with a white weft (the horizontal thread) and a blue coloured warp (the vertical thread), the material is likely named after the French town of Cambrai, where some of the traditional plain-weave workwear fabrics were first produced. Chambray can be used for most types of clothing, from dresses, shirts and ties to full suits, and is a much lighterweight and more flexible material than denim.
PICK WHITES AND CREAMS
CHOOSE BREATHABLE MATERIALS
Cotton, linen or thin jersey are ideal for the warmer months, because these fabrics will not constrain your body, or cause you to sweat. Garments made from polyester, rayon nylon, or silk are not breathable, hence they will not be very comfortable as the temperature rises.
With scorchtemperaturesrecord-breakingsettotheUKoverthecomingweeks, Kathy Carter shares some of her top tips on how to keep cool – and still look smart and stylish
Light-coloured fabrics such as white, cream, beige, as well as hues such as soft pink and light grey, will absorb less sun than darker colours. Black and other dark colours like dark green or navy will trap the light, and make you feel hotter! According to the Pantone Color Institute experts, colours for summer 2022 ‘reflect our aspiration for balance as we move through a changing

The rules for colour this year are that there are no rules –although some of the predicted colour trends include Spun Sugar, a sweetened, soft-blue pastel described as having an airy nature; Gossamer Pink, a soft and powdery light pink hue said to boast a light and tender touch; Innuendo, a hot pink that purports to send a tantalising message; and Skydiver, a neat navy that promises to inspire us to new heights.

Let’s get practical. Ideally we should avoid clothing that will constrain the body as we move around. Think wafty, loose fitting, cool clothes that are in no way tight. A looser layer of clothing such as a cotton shirt will help to create a layer of air between your skin and your clothing, whereas a polo shirt that is tight-fitting may feel uncomfortable. For ladies, skirts and dresses that do not constrain the legs and again create a layer of air between the skin and your clothing will be comfier. For anyone that needs to wear trousers, cotton or linen materials in a loose cut are preferable.
Essentially, these capsule wardrobe colours of blue and pink are staples found in just about every countryside-loving individual’s closet. Team them with an olive-green waxed jacket or a pair of blue denim jeans or shorts, and you have the perfect, summer countryside colour-scheme.
Loose fitted blouses and shirts will help create a layer of air between your skin and clothing, keeping you cool

If fashion doesn’t float your boat and you will be found mostly in riding-wear this summer, simply choose some athleisure leggings, designed to take you from the gym to the saddle. The best ‘riding tights’, as they were initially called, have proved to be a great alternative to jodhpurs and breeches. They’re lightweight, comfortable and offer great freedom of movement. Look out for breathable materials and mesh panelling to help keep you cool when riding. A great thing about riding leggings is that they can usually be rolled up when you’re not riding, creating some airflow around the bottom half of the legs as you groom or muck out. As
The playsuit is the perfect wardrobe staple for the summer and can be jazzed up with jewellery, hats or patterned scarves. Straw hats also provide some cool protection against the sun
In terms of patterns, there are many block-coloured playsuits on the shelves this summer, which can easily be jazzed up with patterned scarves or bold jewellery. If you fancy going for a pattern, ditzy, dainty florals are definitely the way to go.
One possible exception to the popular tight and revealing styling is the maxi dress. They’re great for dressing up or down, especially if you have some contrasting or matching accessories and jewellery. They can be teamed with a denim jacket and wedges to suit almost any occasional need. And they’re currently being showcased in the summer style bibles and modelled by all manner of stylish celebs. Team a maxi with a brimmed hat to protect your face from the sun, and help to keep your body cool in the heat. Look out for hats made of cotton or straw.

these items are made from technical fabrics, they’re also likely to be moisture-wicking, and are commonly able to be manufactured with a treatment to prevent UV penetration. This is not only great for sun protection, but also helps reduce heat absorption. Many versions will boast a full silicone seat or knee grips to aid with stickability in the saddle, but some do not have these features, and it is these versions that will be thinner and more lightweight for warmer days.
However, the fashionistas among us who follow seasonal trends may baulk at such sound advice, as the official summer 2022 style advice from the style bibles is to be ‘short and sexy’ when dressing for your day to day life. Think pencil skirts with thigh-slits, and tight crop-tops that expose midriffs. Should you go comfortable, or trendy? The choice is yours, or maybe you could do both.
usually boasted a button-down blouse that would come in at the waist and extend into shorts, the playsuit is having a resurgence. Dress down for gardening or dog walking, or dress up with heels for a date, the playsuit is a great wardrobe staple and commonly suits most body shapes.

It can be very tempting to scroll through adverts, see the flashy paces, handsome faces and start dreaming. But before you do all that, it’s important to establish a very realistic picture of what you intend to do and achieve with your new horse. What are the deal breakers? SOME DEPARTING THOUGHTS
• Make sure all the details match up with the horse you’re expecting to see!
• If possible, arrange a second viewing – ideally at a venue away from where the horse is kept so you can see what they’re like to travel/away from home.
• If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!

and what you need ▶
Once you’ve found the horse for you, it’s time to arrange a vetting. Fingers crossed they pass the vet and you’re one step closer to getting them home. Finally comes the negotiation – it’s time to agree a price, any terms of the sale (e.g. tack included, deposit) and arrange your insurance. We’d recommend having a written agreement in place and a receipt for any deposit made.
• Write a list, stick to it, check it again!
• Check their passport - it’s illegal for a horse to be sold without one.
SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER
• And most importantly enjoy it – don’t rush the process, it will be worth it when you find the right one!
• Temperament over type
• Make sure someone else riders the horse first – even just for 5 minutes to show you the basic movements and jump a few fences. That way you can make sure you’re comfortable that they’re as described, and you’re happy to get on board!
THE FINAL STEPS
HORSES FOR COURSES - Your Horse & Country Magazine SUMMER 2021 | 67 The UK's leading equine sales website HORSES FOR COURSES
When you go to visit your chosen horse or pony, be sure to take someone trusted with you realistic about your capability
even ask to do this yourself. This will quickly establish whether they have the temperament and manners you’re looking for, and whether you feel comfortable and capable to handle them yourself.
• Ask to see the horse being tacked up/ managed in the stable – or you can
• Is the advertiser private or trade? Buying from a trade advertiser does give you more rights should there be a dispute later down the line, but equally a private advertiser may know the horses full history having owned them from a youngster. There’s benefits to both, but it’s just worth knowing the difference!
• Trust your gut instinct
• And don’t forget to video as much as you can … It can be so useful when you get home to watch it back.

Wow,
As if summer isn’t already hectic enough for us, we have to account for the change in our horses’ routines. We choose to bring our horses in during the day, to give them respite from the summer sun and flies, and turn them back out in the evenings, meaning there isn’t a mucking out holiday for the YHC team.
We find our horses react better to this schedule, as we either ride first thing in the mornings, or late at night before we turn out. These are usually the cooler parts of the day, and there are much less flies around, making our hacking a much more enjoyable experience.Mostpeople find that their horses are a lot more subdued when it’s warm. We don’t get that luxury! If anything, ours are very fresh, and certainly like to keep us on our toes, with the occasional spook, and buck on the grass. Thank goodness for a good pair of sticky bum jodhpurs!Perhaps our five ridden horses are much sprightlier as they take advantage of their time stabled during the day, snoozing and recharging. summer, we have the glorious task of hay making. Having six horses, one donkey and three sheep to feed, it works out better for us to utilise our land and make our own hay. We typically do this in July, meaning by the time the winter comes we are fully stocked and ready to Althoughfeed.we do constantly think about our animals and do the best for them, utilising the land to create their food, we thought we would give it a go for ourselves this year. Most of this type of matting will also have the added benefit of a non-slip pattern on the top surface limiting any slipping.
Often overlooked is the added comfort for your horse. Offering good quality supportive matting will not only give your horse relief from the hard ground, but also help to aid recovery from an injury, and is much less likely to aggravate the strain.

SUMMER CONTROLFLY Dr Jim
Anyone who keeps horses, knows that at best, flies are an annoyance, at worst, they cause serious distress to horses and can transmit bacteria, viruses and parasites.Sohow best to tackle this problem?
With countless fly-repellent products on the market, and advice handed down from generation to generation and yard to yard
Horseflies (pictured, right) are persistent, aggressive, and hard to control. If you have ever wondered why your horse gets bitten repeatedly, it’s because the bites are extremely painful. When bitten, horses swish and kick, dislodging the horseflies mid-feed, so they repeatedly land and re-bite. Horseflies are attracted to warmth,
Rawlinson writes ...
THE HORSE FLY
Summertime brings many joys for horse owners. Yet, one burden that comes with the long, warm days is not welcome – flies.
(hands up who has concocted their own magic remedy passed on by a friend?!) it can be hard to know what to do, to tackle these pests.First things first, know your enemy. There are many types of flies, and each of them pose their own challenges when it comes to control measures.

Equestrians love summer! We all enjoy the longer days, sunshine and evening hacks. However, the warmer weather can bring discomfort to your horse. Bites and irritation from insects, sunburn and over-heating are just a few problems that can occur.
MIDGES
*
As the name suggests, the Stable Fly is often found around stables. Stable flies,

intensely rubbing the affected areas (mane and tail) on solid structures such as fencing. Sweet itch can range in severity – some horses suffer broken hair or patchy hair loss, whereas others continue to itch until the skin is broken. Midges congregate over wet, marshy areas and are most active at dawn and dusk. Stabling horses and using a wellfitted fly rug are key elements in protecting horses from these tiny critters.
THE STABLE FLY

With regards to flies causing horses annoyance, perhaps the most irritating of them all is the midge (Cullicoide). These tiny flies swarm and bite horses, particularly in the mane, tail and belly region. Their bites create an allergic reaction in some horses, known as ‘sweet itch’, characterised by horses
Keep pesky flies at bay with the Horseware Amigo AmEco Bug Buster. Made from 114 plastic bottles, the rPET fabric is sustainable, breathable and reflects the sun. smell - such as sweat and urine, bright light and the exhaled carbon dioxide in a horse’s breath. They also prefer horses with darker coats because they are polarotactic – meaning they are attracted to polarised light reflected by dark skin. Striped, spotted, and white coats (or rugs) reflect depolarised light, making it less attractive to the horseflies, and it is for this reason many fly rugs have been designed with stripes and spots on them.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF STABLING
▶ whose Latin name, Stamoxys calcitrans, means ‘sharp mouth’, tend to bite horses on the legs, stomach and teat area. As well as being a nuisance –notice horses stamping legs and biting at their bellies – they also transmit disease, affecting the horses’ eyes and stomach. Keeping stables as clean as possible and removing faeces from the area helps to limit the number of these germ spreading flies who typically bite early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Whether the flies are biting, non-biting or parasitic, they can cause irritation to your horse or pony.
USE AN EFFECTIVE CHEMICAL DETERRENT
Fly sprays, cream, ointments and washes play a vital role in deterring flies from landing on your horse. There are many options available – a good repellent with high levels of D.E.E.T will help deter flies from biting. Chemical deterrents need to be applied regularly to be effective, at least twice a day, but be aware that when fly infestation is very heavy, re-application may be required more frequently.
USE A FLY RUG AND FLY MASK
When fitted correctly, fly masks and rugs can provide an effective physical barrier against flies. Being prepared is beneficial, and using fly rugs before flies start to bite has a huge impact on your horse or pony’s comfort. Fly rugs are particularly useful for horses who suffer with sweet itch, and fly masks can help keep bothersome stable and black flies away. To deter flies further, choose a rug that is striped, spotted or white. Flies are attracted to polarised light, but such rugs reflect this light, making them less appealing to flies.
Sweat, urine and faeces – flies can’t help but be attracted to these aromas. Regular washing of your horse and pony to remove such attractants can help remove your horse from being a prime target for flies. Make sure to wash your horse after exercise, or on hot days, and wash off any stable stains thoroughly.
TAKE EXTRA CARE WITH SENSITIVE AND EXPOSED AREAS
WASHING REGULARLY
ENSURE YOU HAVE A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT
Flies are attracted to urine and faeces, and many flies use manure as a breeding site. Regularly remove soiled bedding to reduce the fly burden in your yard, and if possible, keep the manure pile some distance from the stable to reduce contact between flies and horses. Regular poo picking of paddocks is also important and helps to minimise the number of flies your horse or pony comes into contact with.
The face and ears are highly reactive to midge and fly bites and taking care of these areas requires careful thought and often multiple modes of protection. Using a topical solution, such as Nettex Equine Summer Freedom, helps to both soothe skin and protect against insects and biting flies. In addition, a fly mask provides a physical barrier to prevent flies from landing on these areas.
CHOOSE GRAZING WISELY
Flies tend to like congregating over water, be that damp woodlands, water troughs, or streams. If possible, try to keep your horse’s grazing away from such areas (but do ensure there is access to clean, fresh drinking water). High ground is also advantageous when avoiding flies, as it is more exposed with better air flow. TO PREVENT FLY IRRITATION
Many flies, including midges, are most active at dawn and dusk. To avoid contact, opt to stable horses at these times. If your horse or pony suffers with sweet itch, it is important to keep their fly rugs on when stabled. Generally, flies prefer still air, so ensuring good airflow through your stables can reduce the number of unwanted flying visitors that enter. If your horse or pony will tolerate it, consider using a fan outside of the stable to act as a further deterrent.
*HOW
THE BLACK FLY Flies can also spread viruses from one location to another on the same horse. Culpable for this is the Black Fly. Small and annoying, these flies target the horse’s face- particularly the ears. It is thought that Black flies are involved in the development of aural plaques and potentially have a role to play in spreading sarcoids on a horse’s body.
Tail swishing, ear flicking, belly kicking and agitation is a common sign your horse is being bothered by flies. Other signs include excessive tear production, raised inflamed lumps at the site of bites and self-trauma caused by itching.
Don’t forget the sensitive skin around the sheath, belly and armpits too. Often harder to shield with rugs, regular appliance of a repellent helps deter flies from landing on delicate skin.

Many landowners give permission to individuals to ride around or through their land, and the Toll Rides Off-road Trust (TROT), a charitable trust that promotes off-road horse riding, has created a network of privately owned, Forestry England and Woodland Trust land that individuals may ride on, in return for an annual permit fee. (Commonly £155.00 for full membership, plus a £16.00 fee for a hatband that identifies toll ride members; although costs may differ depending on location, chosen membership and the member’s age).
The UK’s bridleway network is a real asset to our kingdom, and something many of us don’t utilise enough. Bridleways –or bridlepaths - are also footpaths, but additionally, users are permitted to ride or lead a horse, or ride a bike on them. Your local council is responsible for protecting

2. Transitions Another good exercise in responsiveness is to be able to do walk/trot and trot/walk transitions.
Don’t forget, when taking your horse out for a hack or pleasure ride, there are still plenty of chances to school and train him, to help maintain his suppleness and obedience. It is very important to have a well behaved horse when out in public, and it is far more enjoyable for you to have a responsive ride. Try the following three suggestions, but always assess the conditions and safety of your location; bridleways are ideal.
3. Canter work It is very important that your horse does his canter work at different places, thus ideally not anticipating where on your hack he speeds up! Vary your routes as much as possible to give you different options. A sequence of trot and canter will keep him tuned to your aids. Teach your horse to strike off in canter on left or right lead as you choose. If he makes a mistake, return to trot and ask again using a little more inside bend of the direction you require.

1. Halting It is a necessity that your horse halts immediately when asked, so simple ‘walk to halt transitions’ should be practised, so the horse can be completely relied upon to stand still, e.g. if a large vehicle needs to pass, when waiting at a road junction, or if you need to be immobile on a grass verge. At selected safe places on your hack, ask the horse to stand

With regard to employees, again it is a legal requirement that you have cover in place for them. This is not just for paid employees it is for volunteers, those that are paid in kind, work experience and apprentices.
Makecover.sure when discussing your requirements with your Broker/Insurer that you tell them what kind of livery it is. Is it just DIY, part and full livery, is it a competition livery where you train the liveries, or is it sales livery?
FARM AND ESTATE POLICIES FOR EQUINE ESTABLISHMENTS
You need to make sure that your Insurers know exactly what you are doing, for example hacks and lessons, but do you allow unaccompanied hacks, beach rides, do you attend fetes for pony rides, do you have a cross country course, do you hold shows that are open to the public, do you hire out your facilities? Always make sure you give an accurate description of all the activities that you do.
You can also have a stand alone policy for your saddlery and tack this can be an important and expensive part of your horse’s equipment, so to safeguard against it being lost, damaged or stolen and you having to replace it out of your own pocket, it is advisable to get it covered when insuring your horse or as suggested a stand alone
We also suggest that you always include the Care, Custody and Control Cover for the Livery horses. This would cover injury or damage caused to them whilst in your care should you be found negligent. For example, if a livery got out of the field and got hit by a car the owners could come after you as there was perhaps a hole or breach in the fence.
LIVERY YARDS
You will need Public Liability for comingpeopleon to the land invited, or uninvited, should they injure themselves or damage their property if you are found negligent.
If you have your own horses or you are loaning one, it is recommended that you have cover for death, theft, straying, vets bills, (as we know this is the most expensive part of keeping any horse), saddlery and tack, personal liability, and personal accident.

You can also add to this policy your tack, any yard contents, horse walkers, hay and straw and some agricultural machinery, also trailers, so one policy to cover all.
Some standard household insurers, once you have told them that you are running a business from your residential premises will not want to provide cover for your house anymore, so it is always a good idea to check with them. Always get their answer in writing if they are still happy to cover it.
RIDING SCHOOL
l Make sure you think carefully about where your tack is situated when left, and how easy it might be for a thief to get at it.
In order to avoid the stress of having to make a claim following the theft of your tack, there are measures that can be taken to help prevent this occurrence:

It is very important that you know the ins and outs of what you need for a Riding School, to safeguard yourself. If you are using your own horses to teach clients, or even just taking them out hacking it is a legal requirement that you have a Riding School Licence, that you have Public Liability Insurance in place and you have done all your risk assessments.
HORSES AND TACK
If you are running a business from your premises, you should think about covering your buildings, stables, tack rooms, barns, and indoor arenas.
Most policies have a condition on the theft section saying that they will only pay out if there are signs of forcible violent entry or exit from the premises, so make sure you don’t leave your tack laying around in the open or unattended.
You can get a specialist policy for this and if you live on site they can also include your own home and contents.

Apprenticeships
Sian Bessant – former apprentice at Whittington Eventing
Across England we offer traineeships in our specialist sectors. Traineeships provide school leavers and young people with little or no experience in a working environment to get training and experience in a high-quality work placement. Traineeships are a fully structured, educational work experience programme designed for young people, to allow them to start developing valuable workplace skills and gain qualifications. The learner will receive training from an experienced Trainer Coach and various professionals based at their chosen location.
Animal welfare legislation requires anybody who transports horses for the purpose of economic activity (which is for any business purpose, regardless of whether the business makes a profit) to hold a Certificate of Competence for the handling and transporting of horses. Both drivers and handlers (‘attendants’) are required to undertake training to ensure that they understand the required elements of animal welfare whilst transporting horses.
The coaching we have, in every aspect, is second to none. A massive thank you to all who make these fantastic apprenticeship opportunities possible.
We are proud to be a leading supplier and recognised centre for the delivery of 1st4sport Level 3 Awards in the Principles of Transporting Horses. These accredited qualifications ensure the welfare of horses during transport on either short or long journeys in the UK.

Paddock grazing on very short grass
Grass sensitive horses
Claire Burrow
Grass affected horses are those who due to an underlying hormone imbalance (due to either excess weight or endocrine challenges – Cushing’s for example) cannot tolerate much, if any grass. They may easily pile on excessive weight or become ‘footy’ when turned out onto grass. These horses are
This is the sort of grass which our horses are designed to eat, but due to our modern approach to micro-manage our horse’s environment, and the fact that most of us don’t have large acreages to play with, this sort of grazing is not so common. With each mouthful of long-stemmed mature grass, the horse is receiving lots of fibre but less sugar and calories compared to short, stressed grass. Horses grazing fields such as this shouldn’t need any extra forage during the summer but could still benefit from mineral supplementation if the field has low diversity of plant and herb species.
often confined to grass free areas or kept ‘tight’ on very short grazing. In this situation, the same applies as in the section above; extra forage must be offered along with adequate mineral supplementation to provide suitable nutrition. Our Timothy haylage, which is extremely low in calories and sugar but very high in fibre, is perfect for situations like this. Because it is very clean and palatable, there is no waste and can be offered in several locations around the paddock or grass free area to encourage movement and mimic grazing. The management aim particularly for horses like this or indeed any equine is to allow them to move freely at will to search out and ‘forage’ for high fibre grasses and plants containing vital phytonutrients.
In this situation, grass will be stressed particularly during hot dry weather. This will act to imbalance certain mineral levels and cause simple sugar levels to be high. Because horses are on a constant ‘fibre quest’, they will be driven to graze this high sugar but low fibre content grass to source the vital fibre their guts need. But if fibre requirements cannot be met by the grass, then vices could develop such as wood chewing and longer-term problems such as gastric ulcer formation could develop. The answer is to provide extra supplementary forage in the paddock and to feed a broad-spectrum supplement to help balance mineral levels. At Devon Haylage we have a range of haylage types to suit different tastes and nutritional needs, and detailed mineral analysis reports to allow targeted mineral supplementation. If horses are part stabled and part turned out during the summer, it’s very useful to offer forage both in the paddock and stable so it doesn’t become a novelty when they’re brought in, potentially encouraging overeating.
Mature, stalky grass
✔ A gut full of fibre will help to prevent dehydration, particularly important for competition horses, because the large amount of roughage in the gut acts as a reservoir for water and nutrients.
✔ Providing extra forage in the field will help to prevent the ‘novelty factor’ when forage is only offered when stabled. This helps to reduce the stress effect of restricted fibre intake and consequently the tendency to overeat when a meal of forage does come along.
✔ All horses have an innate behavioural need to chew for a large proportion of the day. So, providing supplementary forage when grazing is scarce can help to prevent vices and problems with the gut developing.
The summer months sees the workload of many horses increase as we can ride more often and attend more competitions. Although the calorific content of summer grass is higher during warmer, longer days, energy intake may not be enough for some working horses, particularly if they are prone to dropping weight easily or are grazing either very short or conversely very mature stalky grass. Alongside a bucket feed for horses of this type, our High Fibre Ryegrass Haylage could be offered when stabled or away competing. Its high palatability encourages intake, to top up energy and fibre levels throughout the day when some horses may be too excited to eat, or plain hay isn’t tempting enough!
For more information on any of our four types of haylage or for a free sample please email claire@devonhaylage.co.uk
For added convenience this summer, for feeding at home or taking away to competitions, Devon Haylage offers a direct pallet delivery service across the UK at very competitive rates.
✔ For fussy, excitable, or anxious horses at competitions who may not eat enough fibre throughout the day, a tempting and palatable forage such as our High Fibre Ryegrass will help to keep guts full and healthy, and release energy slowly.
For new customers, quote YHCSUMMER22 when ordering, for half price delivery on your first pallet!
Regardless of the season, your horse will always require adequate quantities of fibre to maintain gut health. But as the seasons change, so does the nutritional quality and quantity of grass along with your horse’s energy requirements. So how can we ensure that our horses are receiving the optimal levels of nutrition without getting too fat or too thin throughout the summer months?
Remembering that our horses need plenty of fibre during the summer months is vital when managing any equine:
To answer this, although horses are individuals and are all managed in slightly different ways depending on circumstances and facilities, it’s easier to group certain situations and horse types together:
High workload horses or those who drop weight easily

Why good gut health is so important
By stabling your horse during the daytime, not only are you providing shelter from the blistering sun, but the option to provide additional forage will become more manageable. Whilst there are benefits to reducing your horse’s choice to naturally forage, this can be detrimental and reduce their nutrient intake, therefore it might be worth a conversation with your veterinarian to discuss feeding programmes for the summer months.
solution if your horse is normally left to graze during the day can be to offer some form of relief
▶
from the daytime elements, such as offering your horse shade, hard feed, supplements or even a haynet, as well as the necessity of constant fresh cool water.
Many horses have a normal routine of grazing during the daytime hours and being stabled throughout the night. It is recommended to change your horse’s routine so that they are grazing throughout the night and stabled in the day. This will reduce horses gorging on grass and their opportunity to spend all day eating at periods where the grass is at its most luscious. Horses being left to graze through the evenings will also mean that they are benefiting from the cooler evening breezes and drop in temperature, this will in turn mean less flies and insects, so all round making evening grazing a much better choice for your horse.
WHAT SHOULD I FEED MY HORSE THIS SUMMER?

Whatever we feed our horse we have to bear in mind how their digestive system works. Horses (like rabbits and rhinos!) are hindgut fermenters – this means they get the majority of their energy from digestion and fermentation that takes place in the hindgut.
Unlike humans, the summer months are not as easy to enjoy for our equine friends. Hot weather, flies and general poorness in pastures can greatly affect a horse’s wellbeing. Then when you add into the mix the UK’s rainfall, these factors – if not taken into consideration – can cause a lot of health issues.
Utilising nitric oxide pathways GastroPLUS is able to deliver vitamins, minerals, herbs, and amino acids that nutritionally support digestion and gastric issues, supporting a healthy digestive tract from fore to hindgut.
Other gastric products may decrease stomach acid, which when stopped, can increase the acid. GastroPLUS supports the production of mucus in the stomach lining, acting as a buffer and helping your horse to control and contain the acid.

The horse’s digestive system is very long, and we can typically divide it into two sections – the foregut and the hindgut. The hindgut includes the caecum and large colon and is a very large part of the digestive tract, running almost the whole length of the abdomen. It is essential to the function of the horse’s overall digestive system as it is here that the majority of digestion occurs – in fact, horses gain up to 70% of their energy from hindgut fermentation.
Hindgut fermentation is the process of gaining energy through the digestion and fermentation of fibre in the large colon.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I FEED TOO MUCH HARD FOOD?
The best way to give your horse hard food, is in multiple small meals spread out throughout the day. Adding a supplement with good quality pre and probiotics also helps to support the health of the hindgut. Ensure your horse always has access to forage – if turned out, this is grass, if stabled, provide good quality hay or haylage.

As a general rule of thumb, your horse should receive ~2% of their bodyweight (less if they overweight),arewith at least 80% of their intake coming from fibre sources.
If the diet contains too much concentrate and not enough fibre, there is a risk that the starch contents will not have been fully digested in the small intestine, and will end up in the hindgut.Thiscan have damaging effects for the hindgut, which is not designed to digest grains. It lowers the pH and disrupts the balance of the microbiome, allowing for an overpopulation of ‘bad bacteria’ such as Salmonella and Clostridium perfringens.

It is also important to consider the work load your horse is in, their current body condition score and the quality and quantity of forage (both fresh grazing and hay or haylage) your horse has available.
WHICH SUPPLEMENTS SHOULD I USE TO SUPPORT GUT HEALTH?
Whether your horse is on a high concentrate diet or on a high fibre diet, supporting gut health with a supplement containing high quality pre and probiotics, such as Nettex Equine V.I.P Gut Thrive, may help keep your horse’s gut in tip top condition. It is also advantageous to use a supplement like this in times of stress – such as travelling or competing. Horses are designed to eat forage and lots of it – this keeps their hindgut happy. They have evolved over millions of years to eat small amounts, almost continuously throughout the day – have you ever heard them being referred to as trickle feeders before? Try to avoid large feeds full of concentrates.
Their stomachs are comparatively small, and when too much starch (grains and concentrates) is fed, it can pass too rapidly through the stomach and small intestine without undergoing the correct digestion. Diets high in forage and fibre pass more slowly through the stomach and small intestine, allowing for better digestion and

Although small amounts of starch and simple sugars can be rapidly digested in the stomach and small intestine, horses are hind gut fermenters. The majority of digestion occurs in the caecum and large intestine using microorganisms, for example bacteria.
Their physiology has not changed through millennia, so digestive and health issues can occur with changes in feed and forage. Feeds and pasture that are high in sugar and starch can be problematic. Sugar levels are high pasture during the spring and autumn. They can also be high at different times of day and due to different weather conditions, for example midday/afternoon, high intensity sunlight, drought conditions, frost, and after rainfall.

High sugar pasture is very palatable, large quantities can be consumed during grazing. Not all can be digested in the small intestine, so undigested sugar and starch can reach the large intestine. Rapid fermentation causes the bacteria to change and favour acid loving bacteria. These bacteria kill off the fibre digesting bacteria, creating acidity. Resulting gut discomfort can transmit through the body leading to musculoskeletal issues, behavioural issues and poor performance. There is nothing like it currently on the market, all horses (geldings, mares, stallions, foals) seem to love the smell!

When your feed isn’t providing quite enough energy, even after increasing the feed quantity, that is the time to swap to the next higherenergy feed. Start at the lower feeding rate to match body weight and work, and build gradually to your current work level over two weeks. This way, there will be no sudden change in feed-energy level leading to unwanted behaviour or too much weight gain. Cool & Collected is the next feed energy choice with high fibre, low starch and sugar (around 10%), and protein levels to support calm behaviour and muscle maintenance and repair. This feed provides slow-release energy, which is a good choice for those prone to unpredictable, excitable or nervous behaviour but still needing more body condition and energy for their work.
Whateverdevelopment.your
First and foremost, feed for the work done, not the work you plan to do. So, feed at a low (8MJ/kg DE), medium (9+MJ/kg DE) or hard (11+MJ/kg DE) work level and only increase the feeding rate if your horse lacks energy for work or starts to drop bodyweight. It is easier to put healthy weight on than to exercise to take the extra weight off. Choose a feed type that suits your horse’s behaviour – high fibre and oil provide stamina energy and avoid heated behaviour; sugars and starch provide more quick-releasing energy suited to those laid-back types. Increase the feeding rate by small amounts each week over two weeks and assess body fat and muscle condition weekly. Low energy, non-heating feeds such as Fast Fibre provide a balance
When summer activities mean regular hard work, and your horse needs that extra bit of condition, more muscle development, or long-lasting energy to keep performance levels going with swift recovery, then look at using a high-energy feed with higher starch and sugar levels (around 19 -25%), high oil and fibre. These ingredients provide stamina-type fuel for work without causing excitable behaviour. Calm & Condition provides slow releasing stamina energy – the sort of energy needed to provide a little extra fat cover as well as quality protein to fuel muscle development and lower starch and sugar (19%) than traditional conditioning feeds. Power & Performance is for those horses needing more fast-release and slow-releasing energy for all day performance and recovery from exercise with medium starch and sugar levels (25%) to avoid heated, nervous behaviour, and protein to support muscle

Your dog is more likely to develop motion sickness if it isn’t used to travelling in a car, so it is a good idea to plan short trips ahead of any lengthier holiday travel. Consider a natural remedy (e.g. a canine-specific calming product such as a spray or a skin pipette) to ease anxiety, or ask your vet for licenced motion sickness or anti-anxiety medications.

hese days, travelling and holidaying with our pets has become commonplace, acceptable and encouraged – cars have air conditioning, there is a multitude of travel and restraint accessories available, and many destinations are dog friendly, such as chalets, hotels and private homes. Here, we look at the main modes of travel that you can use if holidaying with your dog – car, ferry, Eurotunnel and plane.
If you’re travelling with a dog in a car, it’s always advisable to take a travel water bowl and some water with you. Stop regularly en-route, so your dog can stretch its legs, enjoy a drink and go to the toilet. If your dog experiences motion sickness, consider using a crate, which may encourage them to settle, feel more secure, and not look out of the window. (Like humans, dogs may become nauseated from looking through the moving landscape from the windows. available at your local pet store or online, and your vet may also have some tailored recommendations. A seat belt harness and a nice comfy bed or cushion is an ideal combination for many dogs, depending on their needs. (It goes without saying that it is unwise to leave your dog alone in a car, due to the risk of over-heating.)
The Highway Code states that dogs must be ‘suitably restrained’ in cars. The Code states that: ‘a seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars’. (Dogs should never be restrained just by their collar while in the car, as they could become injured). There’s a wide range of travel and restraint products

Do bear in mind that all modes of travel that involve leaving the UK need to meet the requirements detailed in our section

MAN’S BEST FRIEND
When travelling to any EU country or Northern Ireland, your pet needs:
*
l A microchip. (This is actually required for any dog that goes outside, even if they’re just in the UK and not travelling; microchips should be implanted by the time the dog is eight weeks old. However, charities such as the Dogs Trust, Blue Cross centres or Battersea Dogs Home, as well as vets, can microchip older dogs that have legitimate reasons for not being microchipped when puppies, e.g. if they’ve just been rescued from abroad.) TRAVELLING BY PLANE WITH A DOG
Your dog will need an animal health certificate signed by a vet in order to travel abroad.
INOCULATIONS
l A valid rabies vaccination.
l Tapeworm treatment for dogs if you’re travelling directly to Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway or Malta. (These four requirements also apply to any kind of registered assistance dog.)
TRAVELLING ABROAD

‘Travelling abroad’; which for dogs, includes having an animal health certificate. Owners must take the pet to the vet no more than 10 days before travel to get a certificate signed by an ‘official veterinarian’ (OV). You will need to take your pet’s microchipping date and vaccination history with you. An animal health certificate allows you 10 days for entry into the EU or Northern Ireland, four months for onward travel within the EU, and four months for re-entry to Great Britain.
All dogs should be vaccinated to protect them dangerous diseases, including: canine parvovirus; canine infectious hepatitis; distemper; leptospirosis and kennel cough. As detailed in our section ‘Travelling abroad’, dogs must have a rabies vaccination in order to travel outside of the UK.
l A valid animal health certificate, as described above. You can also use an older ‘pet passport’ if it is accepted in the country you’re travelling to, and was issued in a suitable EU country.

canines, the operator is widely renowned for being very doggy friendly.) Whilst ferry travel that involves leaving the UK needs to meet the usual international travel requirements, ferry travel within the UK is generally dogfriendly, with some restrictions (e.g. often relating to access to inside passenger areas); and there are commonly designated pet-friendly areas on ferries. Eurotunnel (which obviously involves
leaving the UK, as it runs from Kent in the UK, to Calais in France), also allows pets to travel on board, as usual requiring a valid animal health certificate. Registered assistance dogs travel free on the Eurotunnel, and even pet rabbits, rodents, birds, invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles can travel with families on the service, providing a vet has completed a veterinary certificate for these animals. n

Individual ferry operators have their own pet policies and rules, but most vehicle ferries have dedicated lounges for pets; dogs can also be left in the family’s car with a window open. A small number of ferry operators actually stipulate that dogs must stay in cars, so researching your options is a good idea, especially if your journey time is longer. (You may also be required to muzzle the dog; this is within Brittany Ferries’ pet policy for all dogs, for example. Whilst this may seem a strong policy for non-anti-social
