Castle Ward, County Down Game of Thrones, but Castle Ward in Northern Ireland is nonetheless the real-life Winterfell, the fictional home of the Starks. Of course, when not riding dragons, horses were the favoured mode of transport for the folk of Winterfell – and saddling up is a great way to explore Castle Ward’s surroundings. The trust has designed the Hoof Trail specifically for horse riders, providing a challenging 7.5-mile circular route. The trail winds through woodland and farmland, offering stunning views over the waters of Strangford Lough before eventually meandering along the shore itself. You’ll also see stunning landmarks such as Audley’s Castle and Old Castle Ward. The route should take around two-and-a-half hours and must be used in a clockwise direction. For full details of the Hoof Trail and a map, visit www. nationaltrust.org.uk/castleward/trails/castle-wardhoof- trail It’s no mystery why crime writer Agatha Christie

Greenway, Devon loved her holiday retreat, Greenway, with its grounds stretching down to the banks of the River Dart and surrounded by beautiful Devon countryside. Horse and rider can enjoy a 2.5-mile trail from Galmpton village to Greenway car park on a combination of bridleways and permissive bridleways, which are free to use by riders, cyclists and walkers. The route offers great views over the River Dart and the surrounding hills. LONDON INTERNATIONAL HORSE SHOW

As this years London International Horse Show gears up to be the show’s BIGGEST and BEST YEAR YET. We delve into the history of...

THE WORLDS GREATEST EQUESTRIAN CHRISTMAS PARTY! I

n 1972, The newly born London International Horse Show opened its doors in the historic Grand Hall at Olympia. From as far back as 1907, Olympia had hosted magical and lavish horse shows attended by both adoring public and royalty alike. However, by the Sixties the formal Edwardian flower arrangements and neat rows of perfectly polished riders parading their steeds had given way to the fun of the Bertram Mills Circus – a

festive riot of fun held at Christmastime to delight both children and adults. In 1969, however, the Bertram Mills Circus closed for good, and the lions, tigers, horses, camels and elephants who had entertained the cheering crowds were no more. Enter a man called Raymond BrooksWard. A fan of the Christmas circus, Raymond had made his name as a showjumping commentator, and had a vision of continuing to incorporate animals, specifically horses, into a new kind of show – one which has come a long way since The London International Horse Show first

Boyd Exell’s driving horses in reindeer antlers – the Show has a festive theme throughout the London International Horse Show opened. In 1972, the Show’s first year of opening, advanced ticket sales only amounted to £300. Sales were so bad that Raymond – joined by legendary show jumper, Ted Edgar – dressed up in pantomime costumes and took to Kensington High Street to give tickets away to bemused onlookers! Little did they know then that The London International Horse Show would go on to become a firm favourite in the worldwide equestrian calendar, delighting thousands of riders, spectators and visitors year on year. In 2022, the

LIHS-2023-YourHorseAndCountry-185x20.indd 1

Show welcomed a crowd of 80,000, and for this years event, the Show has expanded again, with a second arena – and expects an even larger number of people across the 11 afternoon and evening performances.

Brooks-Ward’s son, Simon – packed up and moved all its festive fun and thrilling competition from West London to a new residence in the Docklands; ExCeL London, where it will be staged for the third time this December.

CHANGE OF VENUE The London International Horse Show continued to be held in the Olympia halls for 47 years. However, in 2020, the Halls announced that their new building developments would mean the Show could not be housed. Ever indomitable, the Show – now run by Raymond

With Simon Brooks-Ward taking up the reins of Show Director after Raymond’s death, the show remains very much a family affair – something very few other horse shows can match. With thanks to the ever-jubilant and loyal crowd, it has retained its world-renowned electric atmosphere – which is sure to get

young and old alike into the festive spirit. Breathtaking equestrian displays, extensive shopping opportunities and world-class Show Jumping, Dressage and Driving are just a few of the spectacles The London International Horse Show has to offer in producing a magnificent day out in the lead up to Christmas. The move to ExCeL London has provided many new opportunities. This year, in addition to the main International Arena, the ‘New Horizon Plastics London Arena’ – will be introduced for the first time. This Arena will showcase the finals of a brand-new Showing Series, additional Dog Agility classes, multiple specialist Masterclasses and even a hybrid auction of 15 of the best Show Jumping horses in the country, in conjunction with The Billy Stud and Breen Equestrian.

IN THE EQUESTRIAN CALENDAR for Show Jumping, Dressage and Driving: While the Show may have its roots in the circus, it’s now the home of the highest level of competition the UK has to offer. The London International Horse Show was one of the very first shows to host an FEI World Cup™ Qualifier in 1979. Today, it is one of only a few shows across the globe to boast FEI World Cup™ Qualifiers in all three disciplines of Show Jumping, Dressage and Driving, and as such it never fails to attract the very best riders, who descend on London from all corners of the globe in the run-up to Christmas to contest the titles.

AN END OF YEAR HIGHLIGHT

WHATS ON Dressage will kickoff this year’s Show on Wednesday 13 December, the Short Grand Prix held in the International Arena. The following day, Thursday 14 December, the Freestyle to

Music competition takes centre stage. This ‘horse ballet’ is where riders choose their own music and movements and scored on their technical skill and artistic performance. In Dressage, the London International is the home of excellence; one of the best-ever rides in the Freestyle to Music Dressage took place there in 2014, when Olympian Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro set a world record score of 94.30%. Whilst this astounding record is yet to be broken, last year, compatriot and London International Horse Show ambassador, Charlotte (Lottie) Fry took the FEI Dressage World Cup™ title, finishing on a score that was just 2% away from the record set by Dujardin eight years prior. The 2022 FEI Dressage World Cup™ podium was completed by equally acclaimed competitors, with second place taken by World Championships team silver medallist Gareth Hughes and two-time Olympic team gold medallist, Ingrid Klimke of Germany in third. The Show’s Show Jumping classes begin on Thursday 14 December and open with the Under-25 British Championship,

05/10/2023 11:58

LONDON INTERNATIONAL HORSE SHOW

which sees the next generation of British superstars battle it out. The competition is a rite of passage for the next generation of superstars; and one which two London International Horse Show Ambassadors, Jodie Hall-McAteer and Harry Charles (who is currently No.1 in the Under 25 FEI rankings) have both won previously. Additional popular Jumping classes throughout the Show include the everthrilling LeMieux Puissance, The Six Bar (involving six identical fences placed equal distances apart, which increase in height each round of the competition) and the Fancy Dress Relay taking place on Sunday 17 December. The Relay harks back to the Show’s Pantomime beginnings, and sees top riders compete in full fancy dress costume – with last year’s event seeing the likes of John Whitaker dressed as a fetching Elizabeth Swann, and Marcus Ehning appear as Captain Jack Sparrow.

SPECTACULAR JUMPS There are two pinnacle Show Jumping contests at the London International, however. One is the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Leg, due to take place on the afternoon of Sunday 17 December. The eye-popping 1.60m course, which last year had a €170,000 prize fund, never fails to test even the top riders. Designed to question the bravery and accuracy of both

LIHS-2023-YourHorseAndCountry-185x20.indd 1

horse and rider, the jumps range in design from London's iconic TfL Elizabeth Line, to Big Ben and even a mosaic patterned vertical wall. In 2022, much to the home crowd’s delight, it was GB’s Scott Brash and Hello Jefferson who rode the most daring jump-off line – finishing on a time just 0.06s ahead of Germany’s Daniel Duesser, to be crowned victorious. Riders then finish the week contesting the Show’s namesake class, the London Grand Prix. The swansong of the show, which takes place on Monday 18 December, it’s the final chance for the competitors to go home for Christmas on a high. The Show also hosts a third, less wellknown international competition. The FEI Driving World Cup™ takes place across Friday 15 and Saturday 16 December, and showcases the world’s most fearless and talented carriage drivers. A sport popularised by the late HRH Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, carriage driving will have the audience on the edge of their seats watching teams of four horses and three humans galloping around technical courses comprised of cones and obstacles such as gates and bridges. At exhilarating speeds, drivers push to achieve the quickest round whilst avoiding faults acquired by knocking off the balls

balanced precariously on top of the cones and obstacles. Last year’s competition was won by the reigning master of the sport – World No.1 Boyd Exell, the Australian who has won at The London International Horse Show a total of 12 times already, and for the last four years in a row.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE The London International is so much more than just a Horse Show; festive fun and Christmas spirit are at its heart. Every performance includes delights such as the Shetland Pony Grand National race, where child jockeys race around the arena at a fast and furious pace on tiny, determined ponies, dressed in traditional racing silks. Two captivating displays will also take place during every performance. Firstly, The Portuguese Lusitanos display – ‘The Pride of Portugal’ - which showcases all the beauty of the unique Lusitano breed, displaying their agile and sophisticated movements in a dressage performance to music. This emotive display last came to London in 2016 and is set to be even more spectacular this year. The second display is the Musical Drive of the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery, which demonstrates soldiers riding with the upmost skill and precision to control teams of six horses, pulling wheeled guns at high speed. The Musical Drive is designed to show

the manoeuvres that were used in the First World War, as well as providing entertainment by executing a high-speed drill ride which culminates with the firing of the Troop’s field guns. The Show is renowned for offering other four-legged animal competitions; Kennel Club Dog Agility classes take place in every performance, apart from Wednesday afternoon, and range from the ‘ABC’ class (Anything But a Collie), to the ’Ultimate in Agility’ Stakes Final held on the evening of Saturday 17 December. Thanks to the addition of the New Horizon Plastics London Arena, 10 extra dog agility classes will be taking place during the Show this year, much to the delight of the agility community. New for 2023, the New Horizon Plastics London Arena will host the finals of the brand-new London International Showing Series, comprising of 23 different showing classes, such as The Hunter Type Championship and The Cob Type Championship. This new Showing Series has been designed to not only be more inclusive, involving competitors from a wide range of levels, but also to be more interesting and informative for spectators. For example, the Showing commentators will explain the classes to the watching public, giving information and details about the purpose of the class and what kind of things they should be looking out for. The creation of this new Showing Series has played a key role in encouraging

amateur competitors across the country to compete in their local and County Shows throughout the year, as they seek to qualify for the Finals at such a significant show as the London International. Therefore, the finals of the Showing Series will not only be a celebration for those who are crowned as Champions, but also a celebration of all the hard work displayed by the Showing community at regional Shows throughout the year. As a part of the series, The British Show Horse Association (BSHA) is running ‘Rising Star’ classes, which is a competition format restricted to those amateur riders and owners who have produced their own horse, giving them a unique opportunity to compete amongst their peers. The British Show Pony Society (BSPS) classes are a competition format based upon the performance of the pony. These ponies can be professionally produced. The New Horizons Plastics London Arena will also showcase the LeMieux Masterclass series, which gives spectators the opportunity to gain an invaluable and honest insight across a number of different disciplines. The LeMeiux ‘Grassroots to Glory’ Masterclass, taking place on Sunday 17 December, is presented by Richard Waygood MBE, and features Eventing Olympic Champion Laura Collett MBE and YouTube personality Megan Elphick. This masterclass will give both amateurs and experienced riders alike a holistic view of how to achieve success, complete with take home exercises to put into practice. There are many more Masterclasses taking place throughout the Show, including a Driving Masterclass with Dan Naprous and a Dressage Masterclass with Olympic medallist, Richard Davison.

A SHOPPING EXTRAVAGANZA Not only are there ample displays across multiple disciplines to enjoy at The London International Horse Show, there is also a Shopping Village boasting over 200 well-known-brands and ‘noton-the-high-street’ shops, providing the perfect opportunity to secure all your Christmas gifts. This year, example stalls you can expect to see include Holland Cooper, known for their tailoring and equestrian clothing, Delanns Jewels for fine jewellery, the fabulous Fairfax and Favour for suede staples, and even Collier & Dobson for fine art and sculptures. For all things equestrian, a snippet of the stores you will be able to visit include; Voltaire Design, Ayr Equestrian, Townfields Sadlers and LeMieux.

Kathy Carter takes a look at the fashion focus for autumn, with a delve into this seasons colourful knitwear

t has been an unpredictable time in the UK this year, with unsettled weather in the summer months, and an unseasonably warm September. Has anyone had much of a clue what to wear from one day to the next, over the last few months? Fortunately, now the weather has turned cooler and the nights have drawn in, there’s more predictability – we can expect crisp foggy nights, low daytime sunshine and some light blustery showers. But the UK is actually expected to enjoy a mild autumn, too; the Met Office says aboveaverage temperatures are 1.5 times more likely this year, and that a very wet and windy autumn is less likely than normal, in 2023. With that in mind, it’s time to dig out our lightweight jackets, cosy knits and long dresses, to make the most of the milder weather. Here, we showcase some of the trends that will keep you looking fabulous

in fall, in what is hoped to be a stunning autumn season in Britain:

NIFTY KNITS There’s nothing quite like wrapping yourself in a cosy knitted sweater on a crisp autumn day. Last year saw a bid by fashion designers for cropped jumpers; but do we really want to let in the draughts? Oversized textured cardigans and generously fitting, roll-necked pullovers are this year’s main knitwear staple. Knitted capes are also ‘in’

24 | AUTUMN 2023 Your Horse & Country Magazine

this season, and look great on a dry day – with side split hems on either side, they create a wider silhouette, and a modern (yet ultimately retro!) look. As we have said, you also can’t go wrong with a cardy – longer length cardigans are popular this year, and always look great with jeans and boots. (However the knitted sweater dress is reportedly not on fashionistas’ shopping lists, this autumn; maybe pack yours away for another year!)

Capes are the perfect solution for autumn

One of the emerging knitwear trends of 2023 is imaginative detailing – think buttons at the shoulders, motifs at the chest, contrasting and clashing colour blocks at the hems and cuffs, and non-uniform, asymmetrical shapes. Thin knits and fine yarns are just the ticket for these milder months – save your big chunky knits for winter!

FASHION

Whist knitwear detailing and patterns are expected to be more flamboyant this season, overall colours are predominantly plain, and feature solid colours, like navy, beige and black.

DRESSES TO IMPRESS It isn’t time to pack away your dresses just yet. Midi and maxi dresses with long sleeves and prints are perfect for transitioning into autumn. Add a belt to cinch the waist, a pair of thick tights (cable knit versions are long-lasting and cosy), and complete the boho look with lace-up ankle boots.

COLOURFUL PALETTES Light pink is a definite trend this season and goes especially well with navy and other pastel hues. Pink shirts and T shirts can be layered with a quality, fine-yarn knit and will always look smart. Shades of brown will always be de rigour this season as we turn to earthy tones to mirror the natural beauty around us. Shades to consider this year mimic your favourite chocolate flavours - from warm caramel to deep, dark cacao, these colours worn on top go really well with dark denim jeans, ideally without rips and lightwashes.

Rustic reds and oranges mimic the fiery foliage that transforms the countryside at this time of year. Think deep burgundy, bright terracotta, and spicy cinnamon as a block-coloured jumper, or go for a black, navy or or beige piece of knitwear, and spice up the look with a red-hued scarf. But beware – fashion influencers are saying that ‘pumpkin orange’ is too obvious a shade.

Tokoi Long Parka Jacket

Gorgeous greens are reminiscent of the rolling landscape, with mossy bright greens and darker olive shades bringing a sense of serenity and balance to our wardrobes. Spring’s popular lime green is still a popular choice, if you’re brave enough to wear it; maybe as a sweater with a crisp, white shirt underneath. Navy is a perennially useful colour and will go with your earthy tones as well as your neutrals. Whilst not a colour direct from nature’s autumn canvas, dark blue is a softer and more flattering shade than black, but is similarly well-suited to the muddy pawprints and rain splashes that this season holds. Golden colours like dark yellow and gold reimagine the soft, dappled sunlight that filters through the canopy of trees in our British woodlands in autumn. Think mustard yellows and soft amber tones to infuse your wardrobe with warmth and radiance.

CREATING A CAPSULE WARDROBE Why not go through your wardrobe and create a capsule collection of around fifty items, all designed to match, contrast or complement each other? In just a morning, you can curate a versatile collection of clothing that allows for easy mix-andmatch outfits, so you never need to spend time questioning whether items ‘go’. Here are our top tips: Start by determining your personal style, i.e., classic, bohemian, minimalist, formal; have you considered the way you look since the last time you had a wardrobe clear-out – are some styles less flattering now, or is there an aspect of you that you want to accentuate? Select a colour palette (e.g., navy, beige and black) for the base of your wardrobe, complemented by a few accent colours that suit your style, such as the rustic, earthy tones we have described above. (Or go for something more bold and daring, like lime green). Pick out some quality basics like a white shirt, well-fitting dark-wash jeans, tailored blazer, leather-look jacket, and quality knitwear, that will stand the test of time.

Mix-and-match; every top should go with multiple bottoms, and vice versa; regularly remove items you no longer wear or love. Take out any summer shoes, trainer socks, or holiday-wear, and pack them away for next year. Hang up or keep accessible your key accessories, like scarves, belts, handbags and jewellery, that can transform an outfit.

WHAT IS A CAPSULE WARDROBE? A capsule wardrobe is a minimalist collection of clothes that can be put together in different ways to cover a variety of outfits and occasions. The aim is to have an outfit suitable for any occasion, without owning excessive items of clothing. This is usually acheved by buying what are considered to be Key or staple items in coordinating colours.

Is it time to edit your undies? Going through your socks and underwear drawers and updating them with fresh new items can be a real confidence-boost. Your capsule wardrobe should be a reflection of your individuality. How have you changed since last autumn? Is your hair more feminine, or maybe more rebellious? Is there an energy or image you want to create with your clothes? Spend some time and attention on any leather items, cleaning and feeding them with leather-care products, to make sure they stay in good condition. Visit the website clothingbanks.co.uk to find local donation points for unwanted items.

Creating a Stylish Home on a Budget Zoe Hewett takes a look at sourcing a beautiful home without costing the earth.

I

n today's ever-changing economic landscape, it's not uncommon for homeowners to feel the pinch as mortgage rates increase. However, the rising cost of homeownership should not deter you from turning your living space into a beautiful, comfortable haven. Construction materials have risen dramatically over the last three years making renovation plans prohibitive and for

some that has meant the disappointment of cancelling altogether. It may seem daunting to decorate your home on a budget, without it looking that way, but it is entirely possible. With a little creativity and resourcefulness, you can transform your living space into a perfectly pleasing environment without compromising on style or quality.

Shockingly, there is already sufficient clothing in existence for next six generations of the entire global population to wear. By the same token, I dare say there is an over abundance of preloved home furnishings on the planet too - an enormous treasure trove of cheap and cheerful resources for us to repurpose for feathering our nests, thriftily. WINDOW WARMERS Window treatments can significantly impact a room's ambience, but they don't necessarily have to cost a fortune. In fact, when done well, they help save on the energy bills by keeping all those draughts

a relaxed look, and can be made for as little as a couple of pounds per metre from cotton muslin. It’s even available in a range of colours, although whites and neutrals tend to best lend themselves to this light style. Even if you're not confident in your seamstress skills, don’t allow a lack of experience hold you back. Simple designs like tab-top curtains or no-sew options are easy to make, and even the more complicated styles, such as those with double or triple pinch-pleat headers, are absolutely possible to make at home with help from the better quality YouTube tutorials.

out, so curtains are definitely a prudent priority item when it comes to decorating on a tight budget. Sewing your own curtains yourself is an excellent way to be thrifty about creating fabulous home interiors. Custom curtains will almost certainly always have superior insulating powers than anything readymade you can find off-the-shelf as they’ll fit your windows perfectly. Sheers or voiles won’t much help keep the warm in but they will elegantly soften glazing, add daytime privacy and

The hardest part of DIY curtains at home is usually finding a large enough working area, which usually means clearing the furniture and laying the fabric out on the floor. It can be uncomfortable working on the floor for long periods so borrowing a pair of kneepads from the garden shed, first cleaning off any mud, is a good idea - as is taking regular movement breaks.

FINDING FABRIC Sourcing the fabric itself can be pricey when you buy new, particularly for floor length curtains and when catering to larger windows. It really is amazing what preloved beauties can be found if you’re prepared to put a few hours in. Both

charity shops and online auctions like eBay are worth checking for vintage curtains. If you have smaller windows you can create new curtains from larger old pairs (the same applies to carpet in fact!), and is you head to the Used Curtain Exchange, you never know, you might hit the jackpot and find a pair in just the right size already. If you’re a lover of the hotchpotch look then you could patchwork together multiple remnants very cost-effectively to create quite the design statement. Some independent curtain fabric retailers who make curtains in-house will happily sell on their decent sized offcuts. Be prepared to revisit over a period of weeks or months to rummage through all the scraps to find a large enough selection of fabrics that you really like, and you’ll get to enjoy the thrill of the chase as well. When it comes to interior design, one person's trash can truly be another person's treasure. Fantastic paintings, prints and picture frames can often be found inexpensively in charity shops, antique markets along with larger and surprising items that lend themselves to decorating creatively, like fans, parasols, kimonos or other textiles and unusual ceramics. Brown furniture is often far superior quality to a lot of mass produced furniture made today, and can be picked up from auction houses at a fraction of the cost. Instead of investing in a brand-new dining

table and chairs, consider purchasing a second-hand set, or a delightfully mismatched combination, and all you need to do is refinishing it to match your desired aesthetic. With a fresh coat of paint or some new hardware, you can breathe new life into an old piece and make it uniquely yours. Dining chairs make for the easiest of upholstery projects for beginners and with plenty of online tutorials at your fingertips and gorgeous paint colours to choose from for the wooden frames, you can effect a rewarding transformation over just a couple of weekends! The money you save on furniture can be redirected towards other design elements that aren’t so easy to procure preloved or DIY upcycle.

COSY KITCHENS Kitchens are notoriously the most expensive room in a house to redesign, but if only a cosmetic refresh is required then paint is your new best friend, as it is by far the cheapest and quickest way to transform a large surface area. If your

kitchen cabinets are in good structural condition but look tired or feel outdated, then a simple repaint really can work wonders. It the fronts aren’t made of wood then you should be able to paint straight over anyway with chalk paint from the Frenchic or Annie Sloan brands, or you can even steam off the laminate covering to reveal the MDF breath. Simply seal it with a PVA solution and primer, then paint in your favourite colour eggshell for a wipeable finish that will completely transform your kitchen. Update the drawer handles and doorknobs for an extra finishing touch. Vintage or antique hardware can come up like new with the right cleaning treatment which will further save a good few pennies. For more than a makeover consider purchasing a preloved kitchen from someone who is remodeling. You can often find high-quality cabinets, countertops, and appliances at a fraction of the cost of buying new if you are willing to invest some time in finding what’s right for your project. You can save searches on ebay to be alerted when something fitting your desired

description is newly listed, or simply head to The Used Kitchen Exchange to see what’s currently on offer. There are now other preloved kitchen websites popping up online as well. Ex-display models can be sold at a greatly reduced price when showrooms change their stock too so its definitely worth keeping an eye on bricks and mortar kitchen stores too. The key to a stylish home interior is not the amount of money you spend but the creativity and personal touch you bring to your space. By proudly embracing your taste in art, furniture and objects and displaying them alongside any heirlooms or handmade pieces that have personal meaning or tell a story and you will add that essential and unique character to your home that no magazine stylist can emulate. Combine that with undertaking some of the graft yourself and you are on to a winner - without straining your budget. So, roll up your sleeves, get creative, and start transforming your space into a haven of style and comfort today!

HOW CAN ECOFUNDING CREATE NEW BRIDLEWAYS IN THE UK? Your Horse & Country Magazine talk to Simon Tomlinson of Rural Progressions Ltd, about PLANT PROTECT & RIDE’s unique vision. PLANT PROTECT AND RIDE Is the new project focus from the team at Rural Progressions Ltd. The aim is to create a network of bridleways and byways funded in conjunction with the economic opportunities of environmental initiatives. WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO CREATE MORE FREE RIDING ROUTES? The necessity for additional free riding routes across the UK cannot be understated, opportunities to use safe routes are dwindling. Urban expansion and the ever-growing web of roads have confined these majestic animals and their riders to limited spaces, making the quest for open, safe, and accessible routes more crucial than ever. Expanding the network of free riding routes ensures the preservation of equestrian culture, provides invaluable spaces for training and recreation, and encourages a communal spirit among riders and carriage drivers. Furthermore, the establishment of these routes serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation, urging society to protect and cherish the UK’s stunning countryside. By investing in and advocating for more free riding paths, we not only enrich the lives of the equestrian community but also contribute to the vitality and wellbeing of our natural heritage. WILL THESE BE SAFE? The establishment of expansive,

dedicated parks specifically designed for horse riders and carriage drivers indeed takes a monumental step towards ensuring safety. By creating an environment tailored to the needs and dynamics of equestrian activities, many of the common hazards associated with sharing roads or trails with other users are mitigated. The thoughtful incorporation of features like cross-country trails, loading and unloading zones, and cyclical routes demonstrates a commitment to both the enjoyment and the wellbeing of the equestrian community. With these elements in place, these dedicated parks stand as a testament to creating a sanctuary for equestrian enthusiasts, where the joys of riding and driving can be pursued with a reassured sense of security and freedom. HOW ARE YOU INTENDING TO ACHIEVE THIS, ARE YOU LOOKING FOR FUNDING, PARTNERS ETC To achieve our ambitious goals at Plant Protect and Ride, we are actively seeking funding and partnerships to bolster our resources and expertise. Our approach is multifaceted, ensuring a comprehensive strategy to maximize the success of our projects. We're actively exploring a variety of funding avenues to bring our vision to life. On one hand, we're engaging in conversations with private investors and investment groups who share our enthusiasm for sustainable and

profitable ventures. We believe in the power of collective investment to drive change and generate substantial returns. On the other hand, we're tapping into government resources, seeking out environmental and agricultural grants, as well as incentives that support sustainable practices. We will also be looking to launch crowdfunding campaigns, where people can donate for rewards, or even be part of the business ownership directly. Building strong partnerships is crucial for our success. We are looking to collaborate with every stakeholder within equestrianism, our combined initiative has a direct positive impact to the whole community after all. We'd particularly like to be working with equestrian organizations who are also looking to achieve more safe riding opportunities and facilitate easier access to equestrianism. We are also keen on integrating our projects with existing initiatives and schemes such as EWCO, the Woodland Carbon Guarantee, and the Peatland Code. This integration will not only provide additional funding and support but also ensure that our projects are aligned with national and global sustainability goals. STACKING CREDITS Our innovative approach includes stacking biodiversity units and nutrient mitigation credits, maximizing the financial returns from our land while contributing to

www.plantprotectandride.org Part of Rural Progressions Ltd

PLANT PROTECT AND RIDE biodiversity and nutrient balance. This strategy ensures a diversified revenue stream, enhancing the financial stability of our projects. By securing funding, forging strategic partnerships, and integrating with existing initiatives, "Plant Protect and Ride" is poised to make a significant impact in the carbon-offset market, contribute to biodiversity and environmental health, and offer lucrative returns to our investors. All this while benefiting the equestrian community, it's a no brainer to us! WHEN WILL THESE ROUTES BE CREATED? This is a difficult question to answer as the government grant funds are paid retrospectively so funding is required upfront. We have an area of some 700+ acres in mind right now that we're actively looking for investors and partners in. A typical site would go from survey, to planting, to being able to be ridden within 18-24 months.

HOW WILL RIDERS KNOW ABOUT THEM? Riders will come to learn about the sites when they're ready through a variety of means, perhaps the most important one is that they will be official bridleways and byways meaning that they should show on any mapping technology that incorporates this such as the Tracks4hacks app. We will also be promoting the sites, they'll be clearly signposted and I'm sure will have some grand opening! HOW WILL THESE RIDING ROUTES IMPACT THE ENVIRONMENT, HOW WILL YOUR PLANS HELP WITH SUSTAINABILITY FOR EQUESTRIANS? To effectively scale our impact and contribute meaningfully to environmental restoration, our sites are meticulously designed to serve dual purposes: benefiting both the economy and the ecosystem. By implementing a holistic approach that

encompasses tree planting, Peatland restoration, nutrient mitigation, and biodiversity habitat creation, we are poised to sequester thousands of tonnes of carbon, provide sanctuary for protected species, and cultivate a sustainable source of timber for future generations. This comprehensive strategy enables us to offer robust carbon offset solutions to individuals and businesses alike, addressing the pressing need for climate action on a grand scale. Take, for instance, a 700-acre site, similar to the one we aim to initiate; it has the potential to absorb up to 52,000 tonnes of atmospheric carbon. To put this into perspective, the entire UK is tasked with offsetting approximately 270,000 tonnes of carbon annually. A single site of this magnitude could contribute to nearly 20% of the nation's total offset requirements, showcasing the significant impact and vital role our projects play in the national and global pursuit of carbon neutrality.

We're eager to talk to people and businesses who want to get involved. Visit www.plantprotectandride.org or email us info@plantprotectride.org

We dream of a world where the exhilarating gallop of hooves and the serene whispers of nature dance in harmonious rhythm, creating a melody of hope and progress.

‘tis the season for giving, Kathy Carter gets us one step ahead this Christmas with our Christmas Gift Guide!

e all know that Christmas is just around the corner. It makes sense to start shopping now, to spread the cost, and make sure we are well prepared for the main event! The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas has evolved over centuries. A symbol of love and celebration, the roots of which can be traced back to various historical and cultural influences. Many ancient cultures exchanged gifts as part of the winter solstice celebrations; the Roman festival of Saturnalia, celebrated in late December, involved the exchange of small tokens of appreciation. Similarly, the Norse tradition of Yule, observed around the same time, included giving gifts to celebrate the return of the sun. In medieval Europe, the Feast of St. Nicholas on December 6th was marked by gift-giving. St. Nicholas, the famous Christian bishop known for his generosity, became the patron saint of children. Over time, his legacy merged with various folklore and traditions to give rise to the modern Santa Claus. Meanwhile, the biblical story of the Three Wise Men, who presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the infant Jesus, played a pivotal role in associating gift-giving with Christmas.

A VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS Moving to more recent times, the Victorian era in the 19th century saw the popularisation of many Christmas traditions, including gift-giving. Charles Dickens’ book ‘A Christmas Carol’, published in 1843, emphasised the importance of generosity and goodwill during the Christmas season. This novel had a profound impact on how Christmas was celebrated, promoting the idea of giving to those less fortunate. The rise of commercialism in the 19th and 20th centuries has also played a significant role in the expansion of Christmas gift-giving. Retailers began

marketing Christmas as a time for gift exchange, leading to the modern, sometimes extravagant emphasis on buying and giving gifts. Has it gone too far? Or have we now ridden that crest of a wave, and are now being more conscious of the world’s resources, and also the need to count the pennies as the cost-of-living crisis continues? CULTURAL DIFFERENCES Christmas customs and practices do vary from country to country. Yuletide gifting continues to evolve, to reflect the cultural, historical, and religious influences of each region. In America for example, Christmas gifts are often

placed under the Christmas tree and exchanged on Christmas morning, Santa Claus being a central figure in the tradition. Here in the UK, we also recognise Boxing Day on December 26th – in itself an interesting piece of historical lore. In essence, Boxing Day extends the festive spirit beyond Christmas Day, and is rooted in Christian traditions – although there are several theories about the origins of the name itself. One of the leading theories suggests that the name ‘Boxing Day’ may have evolved from the practice of churches opening their alms boxes (donation boxes) on the day after Christmas, to distribute the contents to the less fortunate. Another theory points to the custom of wealthy employers in the 17th and 18th centuries giving their servants the day off after Christmas, along with a Christmas box containing gifts, money, or leftover food from the holiday feast; a gesture of appreciation and goodwill toward those who served in households. For many of us, it is a time to rest and relax and enjoy our gifts, together with the Christmas dinner leftovers!

there is the tradition of the ‘Yule Goat’, an invisible spirit that would appear before Christmas to make sure that the holiday preparations and gifting were done correctly; the goat is sometimes seen in place of, or alongside Santa, or ‘Jultomten’.

WILD FOX DISTILLERY Something brand new for under the Christmas tree this year, farm-to-bottle distillery, Wild Fox, welcomes its newest expression; Mane Event five star gin. Whatever your equestrian sport, this decadent new spirit is sure to get you galloping with bright ruby grapefruit and strong herbaceous zings from rosemary, basil & mint. Gift wrapped and posted at no extra charge, from Wild Fox Distillery. www.wildfoxdistillery.co.uk

In Germany, festive gifts are often exchanged on Christmas Eve, and St. Nicholas (or Nikolaus), again plays a role in the festivities. In Spain, tradition says that gifts are exchanged on January 6th during the celebration of Epiphany or Three Kings’ Day. In Japan, Christmas gift-giving is more focused on romantic relationships, with couples often exchanging presents based on our more consumerdriven, Western traditions. Meanwhile, in Scandinavian countries,

CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE

THE ART OF GIFTING AT CHRISTMAS If you are looking for gifting inspiration, here are our top tips for letting your loved-ones know you care: CHILDREN The first rule for youngsters is to pick age and interest-appropriate gifts. (If you’re buying for friends’ children or grandchildren, it’s always worth checking with the parents what the child may like, if you haven’t seen them for a while). Toddlers might appreciate soft toys, building blocks, or colourful board books, while older kids might enjoy action figures or STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) kits, that encourage learning through play. Personalisation is always nice at Christmas, like gifting a custom storybook with the child’s name for an extra touch of thoughtfulness. Consider their interests too, as themed gifts, such as team merchandise, can resonate deeply. Meanwhile, experience gifts such as

tickets for an attraction or show will help create lasting memories. MEN Selecting the right gift for men can be a challenge! But, without being too stereotypical, successful gifting for the man in your life is typically about blending thoughtfulness with practicality. Lots of men for example appreciate tech gadgets, from smartwatches and headphones to gaming consoles or quality power tools, if they enjoy DIY or ‘making’. Subscriptions for audio books, TV streaming services or magazines may also be appreciated. Again, interest-based gifting is always thoughtful – new equipment for a cookery or sporting hobby, an addition to their music collection, or tickets to see their favourite artist, will all show thought and care. There’s also a wide range of skin, hair and beard grooming collections available, as well as vouchers for experiences or classes; or even self-care treats like sports massages, which many men wouldn’t think of getting for themselves.

WOMEN Most women appreciate the personal touch, and an understanding of their tastes and preferences. Timeless jewellery pieces are often appreciated, especially with personalisation such as the giftee’s initials, a birthstone or an engraving with a phrase or date. Accessories are thoughtful gifts (maybe read our autumn fashion feature, to see if the woman in your life has a curated, capsule wardrobe, so you can match her style!) Elegant handbags, belts and scarves make for classic choices. Many women welcome the chance of some pampering, such as receiving a favourite skincare set, or a voucher for a spa day or retreat. Or if the women you are buying for is an avid reader, author-signed book copies or first editions and rarities make thoughtful presents. Personalised photo albums or custom artwork, for example based on a treasured family photo or a beloved pet, also add a sentimental touch. Meanwhile, artisanal gifts such as handcrafted chocolates or

candles in a favourite scent also show great thought for the woman you love. PETS Our four-legged companions deserve some holiday cheer too! Of course there’s a wide range of toys and treats to choose from, from squeaky balls and interactive toys to gourmet pet snacks. Or maybe you will wrap up some luxury bedding, such as an orthopaedic bed or heated pad for a cat or dog? There’s also a wide array of fun accessories, from personalised pet collars and bandanas, to fur-lined headcollars for horses, which will make your pet feel part of the family this season. Gifting a tin of stout such as Guinness to your horse could also be a nice Christmas treat. It’s an Irish tradition for racehorses, as stout contains biotin, folic acid, thiamin, niacin and riboflavin, vitamin B6 & B12, and can be a good tonic. (Don’t worry - your horse’s liver is able to process alcohol very quickly!) Whomever you’re buying for this season, keep it thoughtful and personal, within your own budget, and wrap it with love; and your giftee will undoubtedly be delighted!

GIVING BACK - CHARITY

giving back

Whilst the warmth of Christmas can be felt amongst many households across the globe, it’s easy to look past those less fortunate, especially as the current economic climate lingers, threats of chilling lows as we enter the colder winter months, the dread of rising heating bills and seasonal food cost continuing to rise. 2022 saw over 59% of the UK population giving to charity, raising circa £2 Billion for those that need it most. But these figures are still staggeringly low compared to pre-pandemic donation levels, with worse feared for the coming year ahead as families across the country are forced to tighten their belts for a year of cutbacks.

NS GREAT REASO IS TO SHOP TH CHRISTMAS

These cutbacks could have a catastrophic effect on the UK’s charities, especially those catering for animal welfare and re-homing, many of us will know only too well the expense of keeping a pet, be it a dog, cat or equine, imagine multiplying that cost into the tens and in some cases hundreds, feed, shelter, warmth, bedding, rugs, veterinary care the list is endless. The costs are endless. With money tight we ask, what can we do to help. We started thinking about how many Christmas gifts we buy for friends and family and the value of these individual gifts, staggeringly we calculated that on average we each individually will buy circa

50 gifts each, then we asked ourselves if we reduced the cost of each gift bought by just £1.00, our small office could collectively save over £500.00, all of which could be donated to a struggling animal charity. Imagine the outcome if every reader of this magazine, or every business, or even every household did the very same thing, just imagine the collective difference we could make. Would that friend or loved one notice the difference in just £1 towards their gift? As an alternative we also explored the many charitable adoption opportunities there are available, could you replace that modern tech or fashion themed gift,

Comfortably and consistently producing a good result around one-meter tracks, Louis was due to step up the level and embark on a British Eventing path. The covid pandemic bought an abrupt end to Louis progress and as with many horses around the world Louis was turned away for much longer than anticipated. Throughout this time Louis developed a stiffness, a rigidness in his gate that gave a mechanical look and feel to his hind movement, thinking perhaps a knock in the field or a slip or twist we engaged with the vet, after x-rays and lameness examinations Louis was diagnosed with a bone spavin in both hocks, a treatment plan was put together and I was pleased with Louis progress thereafter, that was until we had started to notice a change in Louis personality. He seemed sad and not his usual mischievous self, often stiff coming out of the stable and difficult to warm up

prior to exercise. The vet recommended that we look at a supplement to aid Louis’ joint movements. By chance we were introduced to the team at Horse Supplements Direct. We had a detailed conversation about Louis, his ailments, medical history and his personality traits. We were recommended to try Louis on a product called ‘Horse Joint Right Supreme’, with an open mind we set to work on introducing the supplement to Louis feed regime, within 10 days we noticed Louis was ‘smiling’ again, his ears were more expressive, his head inquisitive over the stable door once more, he was moving freely in and out of the stable and where he had prevented him self from cantering in the field, he was now galloping, rearing and playing like a baby, he was expressing himself. He was moving freely, and without discomfort, we watched as this behaviour continued both lose and reflected in a supple soft swinging fashion whilst under saddle. Whilst Louis’ on going veterinary treatment has been hugely effective and will maintain a requirement for the rest of his life, so to has his daily measure of Horse Joint Right Supreme Supplement. It has delivered not just a feeling in Louis’ way of going, but has given an uncomfortable horse his smile back, it has allowed him to think, allowed him to work, allowed him to get strong again. It has given Louis his mobility, it has given me my horse.

VET RECOMENDED I have personal experience of and great feedback from many clients using the dog joint supplement and wide range of horse supplements from Horse Supplements Direct. I am very happy to recommend their products as I find them competitively priced, very good quality, minimal calories and easy to feed. I have confidence in recommending these supplements to my younger animal clients as they provide the building blocks for correct growth and my older animals who benefit from the repair to their joints and a real improvement in their mobility. Clients are also commenting on how their horses blossom and dog coats shine. Please read the reviews, the results speak for themselves. Cath Hill MA VETMB BSc certAVP(EP) MRCVS

Feeding In the

fall

Kathy Carter gets the latest news, views and happenings in the world of equine nutrition. ARE WE HEADING TO OVERFEEDING? Autumn is sometimes a tricky time for managing equines’ diets, as the last of the summer grass disappears, nutritional content is naturally lower, and supplementary hay is not yet abundant at many yards. Autumn grass growth can adversely affect some horses, with relatively high levels of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) and potassium, and low sodium levels. As the season progresses to winter and back to spring, many of us try to micro-manage our

horses’ weight, to maintain optimal health, often over-feeding in the late winter months. However, advice from feed manufacturer Spillers urges horse owners to let their horses maintain healthy equine body condition throughout the year, which means allowing the horse to follow natural fluctuations in condition and bodyweight. Spillers’ Clare Barfoot advises ‘using winter wisely’ every year, and allowing overweight horses to lose weight naturally as they come into spring, to make way for natural weight gain. As well as using winter to help

your horse lose weight naturally, the latest research recommends that a low calorie, protein, vitamin and mineral balancer should always be included in the diet of horses on restricted forage.

EQUINE HERPESVIRUS AND SHORTCHAIN FATTY ACID LINK FOUND A link has been identified between nutrition and the equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV1) in horses. A Belgian study reported that EHV1 infects most horses in their first year of life, usually with no serious side effects. The virus can however cause life-threatening neurological problems in some equines, while some simply exhibit mild respiratory problems. Researcher Katrien Poelaert and her colleagues, writing in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology, investigated short-chain fatty acids, described as metabolic ‘end-products’ of digesting dietary fibres; they are thought to have anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers hypothesised that short-chain fatty acids may impede the EHV1 virus’ entry, discovering that when the cells that line the blood vessels were treated with short-chain fatty acids, fewer infected immune cells stuck to the short-chain fatty acids, leading to fewer viral cells infecting the bloodvessels.

PREVENTING LEAKY GUT IN HORSES Canadian University of Guelph PhD student Shannon Stanley is researching the links between nutrition and leaky gut, a syndrome occurring when the intestines are unable to prevent pathogens and toxins from entering the body. “[In equines], the leaking of these toxins and pathogens is thought to cause decreased performance, and the development of [equine] diseases,” Stanley has said. Stanley’s research will investigate the effects that nutritional supplements have on gastrointestinal (GI) transit time in healthy horses. The next steps may include looking at GI transit time in horses with leaky gut syndrome, with a view to developing approaches that may prevent equine leaky gut syndrome in the future.

TO MOW OR NOT TO MOW? Research has shown that mowing pastures in active grass-growing seasons can help reduce the intake of NSCs in horses, thus decreasing the animals’ insulin response. Decreasing the grass height by frequent mowing decreased the amount of NSCs available, with subsequent decrease in insulin responses in horses. Excess intake of NSCs from ‘cool season’ pasture grass

is linked to laminitis. A 2018 study compared horses grazed on tall fescue pastures, versus pasture with short grass height of around six inches. Horses on the short grass showed body weight losses of roughly 25 pounds over a seven-day period; the horses on tall grass did not lose body weight. The authors noted that the short grasses were actively growing, whereas the tall grasses were not, and plant growth has the potential to decrease NSC concentration, found in this study to be higher in the taller grass. The authors concluded that decreasing the grass height by frequent mowing decreases NSC levels, with subsequent decreases in equine insulin responses.

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR FEED SUPPLEMENT? Did you know that your background, including your education, age, competitive discipline and riding experience, informs your decisions on choosing an equine feed supplement? A team of researchers that included Dodson and Horrell’s Dr Teresa Hollands recently wrote in the journal, Veterinary Record Open, that of the 757 suitable online respondents (all of whom competed in dressage, eventing, or both), 49.8% had obtained information from vets; 39.4% from internet articles/reviews; 38.7% from other horse owners; 36.5% from a coach/trainer, and 33.4% from nutritionists. “Most participants had

used other horse owners as their source of information for their most recent supplement,” the study team noted. Participants identified other horse owners (18.1%), followed by vets (17.9%), coaches/trainers (12.4%), internet advertisements (1.4%), magazine advertisements (10.4%) and stockists (10.2%) as their sources of the main source of information that they had used, before purchasing their most recent supplement. The use of a coach/trainer as a source of information was found to be significantly higher in owners and riders under 34 years of age

Feeding for changing energy requirements Every horse’s energy needs will vary according to the time of year as well as their age, temperament, workload and how easily they lose or gain weight. Joanna Palmer, nutritionist for Allen & Page Horse Feeds looks at how to provide your horse with just the right amount of energy to maintain an ideal body condition and successfully fuel their workload. Horses obtain energy from three main dietary constituents; namely fibre, glucose (from starch) and oil. Fibre and oil are good sources of slow release energy; whereas cereals including barley, oats and maize contain high starch levels which provide fast release energy. Choosing the right feed based on your horse’s temperament and workload is key during the winter months. Allen & Page’s range of feeds are designed to offer ‘stepping stone’ feed options to allow you to meet your horse’s changing energy needs. In the Barley and Molasses Free Range, Fast Fibre has a low digestible energy (DE) level of 8MJ/kg, which is ideal for horses at rest or in light work who may not need too much additional energy from a bucket feed. When a horse’s energy needs increase due to a higher workload or a tendency to lose weight, providing there are no veterinary issues that will affect feeding requirements (e.g. laminitis), you can ‘step up’ to another feed that is more nutrient dense and higher in energy, such as Muscle & Focus or Soothe & Gain which sit within the Specialist Range. Muscle & Focus is a mid-calorie feed, providing quality protein to aid muscle development and recovery. For horses needing a high calorie feed, Soothe & Gain is ideal as it utilises fibre and oil as the main energy sources and is perfect for meeting the slow release energy demands of poor doers and harder working horses, particularly those with sensitive digestion. Soothe & Gain is suitable for those prone to gastric ulcers, carrying the BETA certification mark. Allen & Page feeds will provide your horse with all the essential vitamins and minerals and quality protein required, providing you feed within the recommended amounts for

your horse’s size and workload so there is no need for a balancer to be added. Some fibrous ingredients are termed ‘super fibres’, this means they provide much higher levels of energy than forage. Sugar beet pulp is one such ‘super fibre’ that is used in varying amounts in many Allen & Page feeds as a source of slow release energy. Feeds that incorporate sugar beet will require soaking before feeding which is highly beneficial in increasing a horse’s water intake, particularly during the winter months when there is a greater reliance on drier, conserved forage and some horses do not physically drink as much as they need to. As important as it is to increase a horse’s energy intake as their workload increases, it is also vital to decrease energy intake as workload reduces. Not only will this help to prevent unwanted weight gain and exuberant behaviour it will also make the horse less susceptible to muscle disorders that can be exacerbated by over-feeding. Providing injury or illness do not necessitate a sudden drop in activity, always try to reduce workload gradually so that you can slowly lower the quantity and energy level of the horse’s feed to a maintenance level. Make all changes to your horse’s diet gradually over the course of at least 7-10 days to allow the digestive system time to adapt to a new feed or a change in feed amount. Always weigh feeds to be sure you are feeding recommended amounts accurately and split daily feed amounts into as many smaller meals as possible to avoid overloading the digestive system.

BEDDING

Bedding

life

hacks Our horses’ comfort is worth every bit of effort – but there are ways to make mucking out much less of a chore, writes Kathy Carter

O

ne average horse produces around 40-50 lbs of dung daily, or around 7.5 tonnes annually. That’s a lot of muck - and the bigger the horse, the more the workload! Add this to the volume of horse bedding that we all get through, and there’s no denying that mucking out a stabled horse is a massive time and financial investment. Here are some life hacks, to help reduce the burden! Life hacks for mucking out

1

.Really assess your horse’s stable style, and choose your bedding according to how and where he sleeps or lays down, where he urinates, etc, as opposed to just what bedding you’re used to, or what everyone else uses. If he’s super-messy and churns up the bed, he will be super-messy with any bedding, so you may be better off with something cheap like straw. (Check: is he churning the bed because it isn’t deep enough, and he’s getting uncomfortable?)

2

Play around with ‘blending bedding’. For example, could you use an expanding, wood-pellet base underneath a more moveable top later, like shavings?

3

Always use rubber matting if you can - it really does help reduce mess, aids drainage and is comfy for the horse. Check local selling websites for secondhand pieces.

4

The horse’s bed doesn’t always have to fit the ‘bedding at the back, space in front of the door’ model of creating a stable bed. Where does the haynet hang, for example? Why not turn the bed around, so the hay falls to the floor and not on the bed? Also, where does your horse rest, when he’s standing - try to give him bed to stand on, instead of the floor.

5

Repair any worn, paint-peeling or rough forks and brooms with cohesive veterinary bandages wrapped around the area, and use these sticky dressing wraps around the handles

and areas that you hold in any case, for extra hand comfort.

6 7 8

Use the right tool for the job! E.g. shavings forks and muck forks are designed for the bedding in question.

Keep a small skip (or skep) bucket by the stable with a pair of rubber gloves, for those quick tidy ups.

Note when your horse urinates, and try and catch it in the skip bucket! It can become a daily routine, to save on bedding.

9

For shavings beds, head down to your local DIY store for galvanised welded wire mesh panels - these are panels of small-squared mesh, used for building fruit cages and bird aviaries. Lean one panel against the stable wall and throw your shavings fork of horse poo against it; the shavings fall through back onto the bed, while the poo rolls to the floor, for collection. (Any similar household or DIY item with small-squared mesh that’s smaller then a horse dropping works similarly.)  Highly Absorbent  Clean & Healthy  Longer Lasting  Eliminates Odour

heads. This helps ‘brush’ the horses’ feet as they walk out of the door.

12

Similarly, a piece of rubber matting cut to 3-4” in height and the width of your stable door can be placed as a ‘lip’, again fitting flush to the stable door when it’s shut, to keep bedding in the stable and reduce mess ideal if your yard is at a windy location.

13

Store your utensils neatly, by hanging a wooden pallet on the wall; the channels in pallets work well for storing handled items.

14

16

15

17

Try to buy your bedding in bulk - can you share with other horse owners, or free up more space, so you can store more - or could you keep some more at your home property? Delivered bedding in bulk is usually cheaper. If you have hay delivered from a farmer, check to see what else he could deliver too, e.g. straw bales. If you use straw, find out if large Hesston (sometimes called Heston) bales are available, as they may be cheaper. These generally come anywhere between 250 - 500 kg, as

opposed to a small 20kg bale of straw. Check your stored, baled bedding to ensure there are no holes, and keep it covered if you can, with tarpaulin if there are no undercover yard areas. This saves on wastage. Consider stabling your horse for less time - e.g. stabling in daylight hours in summer, and even turning out full time, for as much time as is convenient and relevant for the horse in question.

GETTING THE

temperature RIGHT

I

Team YHC explore the Autumn subjects on every equine agenda this season, with tips from Shear Ease and IRVAP.

f a horse is left unclipped, horses can often be turned out during the colder months with no rug. The thick natural hair coat and the fat layer under the skin is an excellent thermal insulator. However, horses cope less well with strong wind and heavy rain as a wet hair coat will lose the capacity to thermoregulate and the wind will increase heat loss. A field shelter is a good solution to break the wind and provide some escape from the rain. When the temperatures drop, the unclipped horse may need additional help to stay warm. There are may types of rugs on the market and the rug must be chosen carefully. To

fit the horse and it must not be too warm. An unnecessarily heavyweight rug can cause discomfort from excessive seating, rubbing, skin disease and in the most severe cases, colic or overheating! The rugged horse must be checked daily to ensure that there are no broken straps or pressure sores. To check whether the rug is too warm for the horse, place a hand under the rug by the shoulder. If the rug is too warm the horse will be damp from sweat. Many horses are clipped to ease grooming, help with thermoregulation and comfort during exercise and aid in cooling off after training. What type of clip to do

108 | AUTUMN 2023 Your Horse & Country Magazine

depends on the horses level of work and to some extent, personal preference. It is important to clip the horse using clean, sharp blades, allocate plenty of time to do it and put safety first by wearing a hard hat and proper footwear. If the horse does not tolerate being clipped, sedation may be required. It is suitable to clip the first time in the autumn, but if the horse must be clipped several times, the last clip should not be later than early February. HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR CLIPPER BLADES: BEFORE CLIPPING SHARP BLADES Sharp blades are essential for safe and efficient horse clipping. However, it can be difficult to determine when your blades need sharpening. It is best practice to always have a second set of freshly sharpened blades on hand.

VETS FEATURE

MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE GOOD LIGHT If you are relying on day light, make sure you leave yourself plenty of time before dusk! DURING CLIPPING OIL YOUR BLADES regularly. During clipping, oil your blades every 10-15 minutes to keep them lubricated and cool. KEEP IT SHORT Clipping can be tiring for both the horse and the groomer. Where possible, take breaks every 20-30

minutes to give the horse a break and to cool down the clippers and blades. KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR CLIPPERS If your first set starts clipping inefficiently, you can tighten the tension slightly to get a little more life out of them. However, once it requires too much tension and your blades get hot quickly, switch to the freshly sharpened set. AFTER CLIPPING CLEAN YOUR BLADES. After each use, clean your blades with a brush to remove any hair or dirt. You can also use an oil-soaked rag to remove any grease or residue. OIL YOUR BLADES. After each use, oil your blades with a light coat of clipper oil. This will help to protect them from rust. Light rust on clipper blades is not a major issue at first, but left unaddressed it can turn into pitting. Pitting creates small holes in the metal surface, which weaken the blades, cause them to clip inefficiently or fail completely and also makes them more difficult to sharpen properly. STORE YOUR BLADES PROPERLY. When you are not using your blades, store them in a moisture free environment. You can wrap them in an oil-soaked cloth or paper. It is a good idea to store them in their blade case to protect them from dust and damage.

CLEAN YOUR BLADES Before each use, clean your blades with a brush to remove any hair or dirt. OIL YOUR BLADES Before each use, oil the teeth of your blades with a light coat of clipper oil. If the back rail is accessible, oil this too. This will help to lubricate the blades and prevent them from overheating. CHECK THE TENSION OF YOUR BLADES The tension of your blades should be adjusted so that they are just tight enough to cut the hair, but not so tight that they overheat. If they are too tight or too loose, adjust the tension screw accordingly. ENSURE YOU HORSE IS CLEAN Dirt and sand can damage your clipper blades and make them dull. If you need to clip your horse in a dirty environment, try to brush away as much dirt as possible before you start clipping.

EQUINE HYDROTHERAPY Equine hydrotherapy is a form of therapy that involves the use of water to treat and rehabilitate horses. It typically involves the use of a specially designed water treadmill or swimming pool specifically for horses. The horse is guided into the water and then either walks on the treadmill or swims in the pool. The buoyancy of the water reduces the weight-bearing stress on the horse’s joints and muscles, allowing for low-impact exercise and rehabilitation. It does however, also include the use of salt water spas, salt water walkers and salt and oxygen therapy. Equine hydrotherapy can be used to treat various conditions such as musculoskeletal injuries, arthritis, lameness, and to aid in post-surgical recovery. It can also be used as a form of weight loss, conditioning and fitness training for horses.

success of equine hydrotherapy can vary depending on the specific condition being treated, the individual horse, and the skill and experience of the therapist. However, overall, equine hydrotherapy has been found to be a beneficial and an effective treatment option for many horses. Studies have shown that hydrotherapy can help improve muscle strength, range of motion, and cardiovascular fitness in horses. It can also aid in reducing inflammation, pain, and swelling associated with injuries or conditions such as arthritis. The buoyancy of the water helps to support the horse’s weight, reducing the impact on joints and allowing for controlled exercise and rehabilitation.

The

110 | AUTUMN 2023 Your Horse & Country Magazine

Equine hydrotherapy is often used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may include other therapies such as veterinary care, medication, and physical therapy. The success of the treatment may also depend on the commitment of the horse owner or caretaker to follow the recommended treatment protocol and provide appropriate aftercare. It is important to consult with a qualified equine therapist or veterinarian to determine if equine hydrotherapy is suitable for a specific horse and condition, as well as to ensure proper technique and safety during the therapy sessions. There has been an overwhelming number of anecdotal reports where bad

VETS FEATURE

practice has resulted in irreversible damage either physically or psychologically to the horse, when best practice has not been followed. With the increase in sales of underwater treadmills, there is real concern about the lack of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) available and post-sales training. In recent years there has been an outcry for regulation alongside development and access to equine hydrotherapy specific training. The Institute of Equine Hydrotherapists (IEH) has made a huge push for this in the last 12 months and alongside the company VetHed, there has been the development of a new course that is soon to be accredited. This will pull the industry inline with the canine hydrotherapy industry and enable vets, insurers, owner and trainers to confidently choose the professionals to work with. Alongside first aid training and water management, completing an accredited course will also become mandatory to be a member of the IEH. At the forefront, we must remember that the welfare of the horse is paramount and this further training will reduce the likelihood of causing injury or re-injury during their rehabilitation or performance programme. It will encourage therapeutic handling, clinical reasoning and recognise how we can facilitate enhanced results with minimal stress. It is also anticipated that in the next few years the animal therapy industry will become regulated, which will involve both equine and canine hydrotherapy. With this huge change welcomed by both the IEH and Institute of Registered Veterinary Animal Therapists (IRVAP), the opportunity to enhance practice will put those that begin their training first, on the front foot.

THE WORMS THAT TURNED Dealing with wormer resistance in horse parasites Professor Jacqui Matthews, Austin Davis Biologics Ltd

I

ntestinal worms are found in most grazing horses and when high numbers are present, they can cause serious disease. Previously, control programmes were designed to eliminate worms by regularly treating all horses with wormers. Unfortunately, this led to resistance (where wormer drugs do not kill worms), especially in small redworm, where resistance has been detected to all wormers available. To try to slow resistance, wormers should not be used routinely, and the decision to give a wormer should be based on diagnostic test results. Owners can also reduce worm infection in the environment using good pasture management. This is because all intestinal worms have a period in their lifecycle that involves the release of eggs in dung, after which larvae hatch and undergo a period of development before they reach a stage where they infect horses again. In the case of the equine tapeworm, this phase involves a period of development in pasture mites which are then ingested during grazing. Owners can break these life cycles by thoroughly removing dung from paddocks at least once a week, with muck heaps situated well away from fields containing horses. It is also advisable to maintain low stocking rates (<1-2 horses/acre). In such low infection risk circumstances, many horses within a group will only have low levels of worms and those few requiring treatment can be identified by testing. Tests available for horses include faecal worm egg count (FWEC) tests, as well as serum or saliva tests that detect antibodies specific to particular parasites. FWEC tests are useful for identifying small redworm egg excretion in dung. Most adult horses excrete low levels of eggs; generally, ~20% of horses in a population are the source of ~80% of

pasture contamination. By carrying out FWECs, wormer treatments to reduce pasture contamination can be targeted specifically at horses that shed above a set threshold (e.g., >200 eggs per gram). It is recommended to FWEC horses 2-3 times per year during the grazing season, to include winter if horses are grazing year-round. Keep in mind that FWEC results do not tell you how many worms are present within horses and do not accurately detect tapeworm infection. FWEC tests are useful for testing how well wormers have worked when testing is repeated after treatment. Antibody-based tests are available to diagnose tapeworms and small redworm. Blood and saliva tests are

Saliva sampling available for detecting tapeworm infection and can be used in spring and autumn to provide information on whether or not to use an anti-tapeworm wormer. Tapeworm testing indicates that around two thirds of horses do not have tapeworm infections requiring treatment. A blood test can be used to detect all stages of small redworm in horses and is useful in providing information for treatment decisions in horses kept in low parasite risk circumstances. Importantly, the use of testing in horses substantially reduces wormer use and hence reduce the risk of resistance occurring. For more information, visit www.equisal.co.uk Horse tapeworm life cycle

STAY SAFE while out with your horse this Autumn By Alan Hiscox, Director of Safety at The British Horse Society

W

hether you are a horse rider, carriage driver or walker, it can be difficult to get outside and keep active during autumn and winter. For many equestrians, however, it is important to be able to continue to ride out and exercise with your horse; there are many physical and psychological benefits. Hacking is a great cardiovascular exercise, with trotting burning up to 600 calories per ride! While riding, you are also building a

118 | AUTUMN 2023 Your Horse & Country Magazine

special bond with your horse which can give you a serotonin boost as well as that much needed motivation to get outside. With darker nights, boggy fields, and temperamental weather, you should plan ahead and be prepared in order to keep yourself, as well as those around you safe. The British Horse Society (BHS) has a few tips and advice to help you stay safe when out and about during the colder months.

HORSES FOR COURSES

FAMILIARISE YOURSELF WITH THE RULES OF THE ROAD: Before going out, it is important to be up to date with the Highway Code. Many of us will need to use roads to get to off-road sections, so it is essential to know about your rights and responsibilities. The Highway Code was updated in 2022, with the BHS working hard as part of the Highway Code review’s stakeholder group for vulnerable road users to represent equestrians in the review. Key changes include setting the advisory speed for passing people riding horses or driving horse-drawn vehicles at 10mph and advising drivers to allow at least two metres of space. Horse riders also now sit alongside pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, as vulnerable road users. This new rule highlights that, irrespective of the method of transport, those who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they may pose to others. BE SAFE AND BE SEEN: As any driver will tell you, it can be incredibly difficult to spot a cyclist on the road if they are not wearing hi-vis clothing. The same goes for a horse and rider. The BHS always recommends wearing conspicuous clothing when riding or carriage driving, regardless of whether you ride or drive on or off the road, the time of day, season or weather conditions. In addition to hi-vis tabards, consider using hi-vis hatbands and

gloves as well as LED lights for your boots and arms. Hi-vis needn’t be restricted to just riders, with hi-vis leg bands and neck straps available for your horse too. Whilst riding off-road can be less challenging than being on the road, there may be risks attached to riding. Being prepared can help minimise these. Wearing hi-vis clothing whilst riding offroad allows dog walkers to see you from a greater distance, giving them more time to get their dog under control. If you are out hacking in an area where there are low flying aircraft or helicopters, the pilot is also more likely to spot you up to half a mile sooner, allowing them to either change course or gain altitude to reduce the likelihood of your horse reacting in fright. Hi-vis may also help you if the worst happens. If you have a fall while out for a hack on your own and part company with your horse, increasing your visibility can be vital in locating you if you are unable to move, particularly if you have lost consciousness. It could help a search party spot you or even make it easier for a helicopter or search drone to spot you from above. The equine charity commissioned a scientific study on how visible horses and riders are on the road by the Transport Research Laboratory. You can find the full report to download at www.bhs.org.uk/ go-riding/riding-out-hacking/what-to-wear/ hi-vis/ PROTECT YOUR HEAD: It goes without saying that all riders should wear a current standard riding hat at all times. Even a well-trained horse can act on its instincts and move quickly, causing the rider to fall or become unstable. The Law states riders under 14 must wear a helmet.

CHECK THE WEATHER: British weather is always unpredictable, but especially so during autumn. If you are going out on a hack, walk or ride, make sure you check the weather before you leave, so you are fully prepared. If there is a risk of ice or snow, then it is best to avoid going out altogether. Be prepared for the weather conditions to change quickly too. Heavy rain and fog can severely reduce visibility, so it’s important you can be seen - one of the many reasons you should wear hi-vis – whether on or off the road. BE PREPARED: If you are going out, make sure you plan your route and tell someone where you are going and what time you expect to return. There is nothing worse than getting lost, especially as it starts to get dark. Carry a phone with you for use in emergencies - downloading the app “what3words” can help pinpoint your location - and be prepared for it to get dark quickly –take a light with you, this is useful for riding both and off-road. THINK FIRST AID: It is sensible to be prepared for any accident that may happen to you and the people around you. After all, horses are, by their nature, unpredictable and even the quietest horse may sometimes act unexpectedly. Should an accident occur, then practical knowledge in first aid procedures at the scene will make a remarkable difference. Half the learnings are assessing the situation and deciding what the next steps are to take. Taking a course, like the BHS Two-Day Initial First Aid Course, will

help you to be able to learn where to start, who to call for help and what to do while waiting for them to get there. There’s not a lot you can do with major injuries – the most important thing is to get help quickly. However, first aid training will give you the ability and, most importantly, the confidence to start with the ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Circulation), offering the injured party the best chance of survival. Knowing what to do should your horse get injured is important too. It’s beneficial to build your knowledge of a few basic treatments and procedures, as well as having a first aid kid to hand when possible. GET RIDE SAFE READY: For those wanting to learn more, the BHS offers a Ride Safe Award as part of their BHS Challenge Awards. Ride Safe gives you the confidence to ride in the environments you are most often faced with, keeping you and your horse safe. The course provides practical examples, tips and guidance to build your knowledge when riding in all situations including riding safely on the road, negotiating hazards, dealing with difficult situations when riding out and understanding common signs. TELL THE BHS: Remember, if you encounter any equinerelated incident, you can log it quickly and easily through the BHS safety app, ‘Horse i’, which is available to download for free from the Apple store and Google Play

TRAVEL LIKE A BOSS! A Visit to BOSS HORSEBOXES By JON CLARK, design graduate and horse owner I visited Boss horseboxes at the invitation of the owners Clive Ecroyd and Paul Williams. Boss horseboxes was formed in 2009 combining the lifelong equine knowledge engineering and horsebox building skills of Clive and Paul Their modern airy factory is just outside Chester. There is a busy happy feel to the place Later at Clive’s home we chat. I asked how Boss came into existence. “The 3.5 tonne horsebox was the vehicle of the future. It is so convenient and economical and easy to drive. If you have a trailer, it’s slow to hitch up and get going, hard to manoeuvre and you end up driving round a gas guzzling 4 X 4 all the time for the comparatively short time you pull a trailer. The 3.5 tonne boxes travel at up to 70 mph and need no special licences, which is good for younger drivers, or the Boss can be uprated to 3.9 or made as a 4.5 tonne if you need even more payload Paul has been building horseboxes for over 35 years and Clive has a

background of aircraft engineering and so engineering safely using lightweight materials comes naturally to him. “Safety is so important. But safety comes from first good design using correct and appropriate manufacturing principles and then suitable high quality materials and skilful building. I have been travelling horses all my life and the box has first and foremost to be safe and practical. We dont compromise The materials we use are selected for strength, longevity and to be lightweight. We use aluminium and fibreglass– no steel, no plywood. And honeycomb panelling, we were one of

the first companies to use it. The Boss is long lived – there is nothing to rot or rust”. The Boss is visibly different – it is clearly designed to look good as well as to be functional: curves are everywhere, the sides are smooth – no seams or joins or screws or bolts are visible, “Its not coincidence,” says Clive – “we planned it that way and it takes a lot more time to manufacture, it’s quality construction and we think it shows”. Clive shows me round an 35XS. “This is our most popular model – it has a six seat cab and you can have the back seat convert into a bed”. A window gives a view into the horse area. We go to the ramp – “Try it” says Clive, and I duly open the ramp by means of a large

the design and I notice everywhere there is attention to detail The enormous tack locker flips up is just at the side of the ramp for easy access to tack up. My mind instantly starts planning where I would store my boots,

“Our aim was to be the best, we believe we are the best”. single shiny central lock, the ramp descends smoothly and easily to produce a shallow inviting ramp, I put it back up again with two fingers. “Horses load and travel very easily in the Boss” Clive continues, “You load horses leading from the left which is natural for them, and there is plenty of headroom and space in there – a 17.2hh horse fits comfortably. – the design is so well proportioned it can deceive you.

When it comes to the inside – it is a Tardis, everywhere is much roomier than you think it will be. Clive points out lots of features that show the thought behind

bandages, tack box, studs, fly spray hoof oil etc etc – and I can see I could fit it all in easily. He hasn’t finished yet and already I have this aching wanting feeling inside. Clive opens the back door to reveal a living area with a sink and a burner, lots of storage space and a bench seat. “Its perfect for changing and keeping all your clothes clean and away from hay and sneezes, The XL version has an extra 45cm in here, which can be useful if you stay away a lot and need extra carrying space We also make a

weekender 4.5 tonne and can provide a bed and wardrobe etc He shows me the pro sports model with a wardrobe, haylage storage, rugs, saddlecloths shelves everywhere and this has a tack locker with 4 saddle racks. Yet another locker: “This is the wet locker – with a horse shower and water – we keep buckets sponges etc in here so that all the wet stuff is kept together”. Boss’s reputation has been built by having many satisfied owners all over country. Second hand boxes are rare highly desirable and hold their prices well. Forums give the thumbs up to Boss. Clive emphasises customer recommendation is all important “We find word of mouth is the best salesman. I can tell you all day long how good our box is but until you see one or someone tells you about theirs, its really just words. And we arent salesmen. We do not pressurise or hassle potential customers at all - we simply welcome them to the factory and they see the care that goes into their construction by every man there. “Our aim was to be the best, we believe we are the best”.

I am waved off suitably impressed!

Do you know your payload before you drive to an event?

It is very easy to overload a 3500kg horsebox, and even a 7500kg one, as most people don’t take into account passengers, tack, water, hay, and these add to the payload considerably. For example, an empty 3500kg horsebox normally weighs about 2500kg, leaving 1000kg for the driver and passenger, horse, tack, etc. Many of these horseboxes are stalled for two horses, and that can be a big problem. If you are overloaded and have an accident, your insurance will be invalidated and you could be facing a number of offences, both overloading and licence ones. In recent years, the DVSA has found that more than 80% of LCV’s stopped on the roadside on suspicion of overloading, are in fact overweight.

Why Uprating You have a limited payload capacity and wish to carry an extra horse or equipment. You don’t want to buy a newer, bigger horsebox so you can save money by converting your current vehicle. You want to avoid a large fine by DVSA.

What to do if you are overloaded. The first thing is to weigh your horsebox FULLY LOADED with your horse(s), tack, water, food, and passengers so that you know where you stand. Remember to weigh each axle individually as you may find that whilst you may be under the Gross Vehicle Weight, you have actually overloaded the rear axle. This is very common in lightweight horseboxes. Fortunately SvTech can help, and is keen to promote its uprating service for lightweight horseboxes (3500kg), whereby the horsebox can gain an extra 200-300kg in payload. This provides vital payload capability when carrying an extra horse and/ or tack and offers peace of mind for the owner.

SvTech has carried out extensive work and testing on lightweight models and has covered uprates for most lightweight vehicles. It is worth noting that some uprates require modifications or changes to the vehicle’s braking, tyres and/or suspension, for which SvTech provides a simple purpose-built suspension assister kit. This will take between 1-2 hours for you to fit. Your horsebox will then go for a formal inspection to bring it into the ‘Goods’ category, and, depending on the vehicle’s age, may also require fitment of a speed limiter, for which there are one or two options. Most importantly, vehicles registered after May 2002 must be fitted with manufacturer’s ABS, if going above 3500kg.

We can start the ball rolling by asking customers to fill in an enquiry form and send it back with photos of the Horsebox plate, the weight ticket and Registration Document.

Kathy Carter looks at how to ensure your stable or shelter build goes to plan

t’s a dream for many horse owners, to keep their horses at home with them. In the long run, there are savings to be made when comparing the cost of keeping your horses at home to paying livery. Full livery costs, for example, are commonly between £400 and £800 in the UK. Firstly, a quick note on planning (we will go into further detail later on in the article): in most cases, planning permission will be required for stables. The Gov.uk website, which details current planning legislation, states: “You’ll probably need planning permission if you want to build something new, make a major change to your building, or change the use of your building.” So it’s a good idea to leave two to

three months to obtain planning permission. (Do research local advice, as it may differ according to the local authority and appearance of the landscape.) The first consideration if you want new stables at home is whether any existing buildings can be converted. If an existing agricultural-type building is structurally sound, has good ventilation and suitable ceiling heights, you may be able to convert it to stables. If you’re updating an existing building, you will probably be able to create made-to-measure internal stables with your chosen supplier. This means you can get creative with aspects like doors that open either way, sliding doors that save on space, and design features to suit the existing shape of the building. If you’re going for

a new-build, you will certainly have the liberty to create a layout that really works for you and the property. You will undoubtedly work with your chosen construction company on the design of your build, but here are ten areas to consider when you’re planning to build stables for horses and ponies:

1.

Consider the visual and environmental impact for the area and surrounding properties in your county (and thus, the local authority remit). Will your build affect your neighbours? Will the stables be screened by trees?

2.

How secure will the stables be – can you see the yard from your house?

3. Have you got good vehicular access, both

for the build, and for activities like feed deliveries and going to competitions in a lorry?

4.

What is the “lie of the land” – is your property undulating? Excavation and filling may be required for more hilly areas, to create a level surface. (Your builders will also consider flood risk.)

5.

Which direction should the stables face – e.g. stable doors and windows should ideally face away from prevailing winds, but for security purposes, you may not want the horses to be visible from the road and “on display”.

6.

Pay attention to ventilation; this is key in summer, especially as many people bring their horses in during the daytime, to avoid heat and flies.

7.

you need a separate metered water supply, for example? Do you have the capacity for rainwater harvesting, bore holes and solar power for generators? These could be an asset, in addition to your mains supplies of water and power.

larger stables if you can, e.g. 14ft by 14ft. (For foaling, 16ft by 16ft is advised). Doorways should be 4ft wide and at least 7ft tall.

10.

10 In terms of layout, what else do you want apart from stables – a feed room, tack room, rug room or even tea room, perhaps? Remember to try to ensure the equine residents will be able to see each other.

BUILD IT - STABLES AND SHELTERS

Field shelters Mobile shelters are three-sided, openfronted timber constructions, usually with metal skids for relocation. They may offer the option to add metal or timber gates to the frame. Mobile field shelters generally do not need planning permission in order to be installed. If they are mobile, it means they’re designed to be moved, that no ground preparation was required prior to their installation, and that there are no physical attachments to the ground. However, some individuals erecting mobile shelters do still experience challenges from local authorities, so there seems to be some different interpretations of the law. It may therefore be best to check with your local authority, if you’re unsure. To keep within the spirit of the guidelines, which can be ambiguous, you should move your mobile shelter around periodically – every two months is recommended, and fines have been applied to people whose shelters were not moved frequently enough. In fact, this is good for the healthy upkeep of your field, especially if you feed hay in the shelter, or the horses defecate in there. If you want to erect a permanent field shelter, you will have some similar questions to those posed for a stable; notably the lie of the land, regarding the direction of the wind. Permanent shelters tend

to have solid floors as their main differentiating factor, and should be sited as inconspicuously as possible – they should “respect the lie of the land”, and they tend to be roofed with a dark coloured felt, again to “blend in”.

Planning permission? Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, local planning authorities (under the jurisdiction of the National Planning Policy Framework or NPPF), manage planning permissions, which are usually required if a landowner wants to build something new, make a major change to a building, like an extension, or change the use of the building. Currently, planning authorities are said to look more favourably on a planning application if an existing, redundant building can be re-used for something else; so if you’re still perusing suitable properties, look into this aspect if you can. Stables for equines are commonly classed as having “a recreational or commercial need”. It usually takes eight to 13 weeks to process a planning application; you can apply online under the “applications” section of the Government’s planning website, which is a very useful guide, even containing planning fee calculators and details on your location and site plans – visit www.planningportal.co.uk. Private builds may not have to comply with building regulations, as these tend to apply to commercial properties. However some “material change of use” builds, extensions and “underpinning” works will need building regulations approval, and you can apply for this at www. planningportal.co.uk. There may be exceptions to the aforementioned rule of requiring planning permission, if you’re putting up a stable within the curtilage (e.g. the enclosed area immediately around the property). This is provided that the horses are kept as pets “in association with that house”. The size, height and position of the stable, in relation to the position of the house/road/footpath, and the size of the curtilage, are factors.
