Welcome to our latest theatres’ brochure It’s been three years since Your Leisure took over the reins at Theatre Royal Margate, bringing a complementary arts and entertainment offer to Margate’s Winter Gardens, and in so doing, creating Margate Theatres. In that time, we’ve continued to bring you the best in big names, popular entertainment alongside a diverse range of exciting, contemporary work - and our loyal audiences have supported us all the way. Our Friends of Margate Theatres membership has tripled and audience numbers are growing like Topsy year on year. Our Youth Theatre groups are expanding and more and more schools and community groups are using our venues for workshops, shows and tours. We would like to thank all the charities and organisations that have used our facilities to raise money for good causes. In the last year alone, charity events at our venues have raised thousands from boxing nights to shows and dinners.

But what you see on these pages is just the tip of the iceberg. We couldn’t bring you all this without the dedicated hard work of all our teams in Admin, Box Office, Finance, Front of House, Kitchen, Marketing, Technical and the support of our wonderful partners, some of whom are listed below. A special thank you must go to our volunteers, who act as ushers in the Theatre Royal. They make all the difference in giving our customers such a warm welcome – so much so, that we’ve entered the My Theatre Matters! Most Welcoming Theatre Award 2015. Make sure you vote for us for this and the Pride in Thanet Awards! We hope you enjoy what you’ve seen so far and we look forward to welcoming you to Margate Winter Gardens or Theatre Royal very soon Paul Palmer Entertainments and Facilities Manager Pam Hardiman Programme Manager

The Dreamboys

Going Viral

Tim Vine

Written and performed by Daniel Bye

Tim Timinee Tim Timinee Tim Tim To You

The Dreamboys are back in Margate. They are without a shadow of a doubt the UK’s top male glamour show, perfect for a girl’s night out with all your friends. Their showcase is unquestionably the most famous male stripper act the UK has ever produced. With special guest appearances on some of the UK’s biggest TV it’s no wonder The Dreamboys have earned themselves the title of the only male strip group in history to have celebrity status. If you’re looking for the very best girl’s night out in the UK, then look no further then these incredible stripping hunks. The Music, Muscle, Magic and Mayhem will leave you breathless which you simply cannot afford to miss!!!

An aeroplane flies from India to England. Everyone on board is weeping. Everyone except you. On the ground, the weeping spreads. Is it a strange new disease? An outbreak of hysteria? Or has the world become genuinely sad? In this uncanny, high-definition world we are all more connected, more vulnerable, and more human - but not equally so. Going Viral is a thrilling new development in Daniel Bye’s unique blend of storytelling, playful comedy and performance lecture. From the performer who brought us “Story Hunt” and direct from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2015 This show is performed to a small capacity audience seated on the Theatre Royal stage.

First stand-up tour in 4 years, the punslinger returns with lots of new jokes, silly songs and twitchy dancing. Joke, joke, joke. Prop, prop, prop. Song, song, song. (Sorry the laptop’s jammed.) It’s time to put the satire on hold and watch a grown man act the goat. Come along and enjoy the nonsense.

Howl At The Moon

UB40

Directed by Toby Park (Spymonkey)

It’s July 1969. David Bowie has just released ‘Space Oddity’. The Apollo 11 Rocket is going to the moon. On board are Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. Two of them are destined to be the most famous men on the planet. You are about to meet the third. Michael Collins is on a mission all of his own. Whilst Neil and Buzz muck about moonwalking, Michael has a serious job to do. For 60 minutes, he will visit the dark side of the moon, out of radio contact with the rest of humanity. 60 minutes of utter solitude. 60 minutes to think about home.

60 minutes to examine the nature of existence. And all through the medium of street dance. And some really catchy tunes. Howl at the Moon is a rocket-fuelled display of musicianship, dance and comedy. The space capsule is a beat making, bass shaking, electro funk machine and countdown is about to commence. This show is performed to a small capacity audience seated on the Theatre Royal stage Running Time: 1 hour (no interval) Ages: 14+ Tickets: Pay What You Decide*

The Autumn leg of the tour sees UB40 making a welcome return to the Winter Gardens. UB40 are Robin Campbell (co-lead vocals and guitar), Duncan Campbell (lead vocals) Earl Falconer (bass, vocal),Brian Travers (sax and keyboards),Jimmy Brown (drums), Norman Hassan(percussion, vocals), and also features Martin Meredith, Lawrence Parry and Tony Mullins. Naming themselves after the unemployment benefit form, UB40 formed in 1978, before releasing their debut album ‘Signing Off’ in August 1980 – considered by many to be one of the greatest reggae albums ever released by a British band.

The Unthanks are quietly marking their 10th anniversary this year with a short tour of small intimate spaces, with a pared back line-up, their feeling being that if folk music is a lifelong pursuit, 10 years is just a drop in the ocean. And in the same respect, rather than putting out an exploitative ‘best of’, a release of rarities, live recordings, memorabilia and unreleased material will accompany the tour. Nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and the only British folk representation in The Guardian’s and Uncut’s best albums of last decade (worldwide, all genres), The Unthanks have an army of notable fans, including actor Martin Freeman, Elvis Costello, Colin Firth, Robert Wyatt, Ben Folds, Ryan Adams, Rosanne Cash, members of Portishead and Radiohead, Dawn French, Paul Morley, Ewan McGregor, and many more.

The Unthanks is a family affair for Tyneside sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank, with Rachel married to pianist, producer, arranger and composer, Adrian McNally. Using the traditional music of the North East of England as a starting point, the influence of Steve Reich, Miles Davis, Sufjan Stevens, Robert Wyatt, Antony & the Johnsons, King Crimson and Tom Waits can be heard in the band’s 8 albums to date, including Mount the Air, released to huge critical acclaim earlier this year. “There really is no better folk band in the land” Q Magazine Running Time: 1hour 30 minutes + interval Ages: All Tickets: £18, Concessions £16, Friends £15, restricted view £14

Grass

Bear And Butterfly

Explore the world beneath your feet.

Written by Annie McCourt, based on an original story by Gordon Poad

Look down. What are you standing on? Explore the ground and all of its wriggly inhabitants in this quirky dance show for young children.

One day, Bear’s life changes forever when, deep in the branches of the tree he hears the munching and a crunching of a bright green Caterpillar. Bear and Caterpillar soon become the best of friends, Caterpillar munching happily through tales of Bear’s younger life catching fish, raising cubs and being big, strong and fierce. But one day Caterpillar stops munching and looks sick. Bear fears he will lose his friend but, as if by magic, Caterpillar grows and stretches and from the leaves emerges a beautiful butterfly.

Featuring worms, slugs, snails, spontaneous outbreaks of ant dancing and plenty of obscure related statistics, Grass uses performance and puppetry to inspire children to look closely at the world around them, to get mucky and play! Monty Don

The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha

Richard Navarro

Two feisty senoritas and a downtrodden Englishman embark on a journey through Spain, taking on one of the most accomplished works of fiction ever written; Don Quixote. Accompanied only by an otherworldly guitarist whose presence there makes no sense whatsoever, they will lead you to joy, pain and ultimate wisdom.

Folk-inspired singer and songwriter Richard Navarro juggles violin, trumpet, piano and percussion to bring to life his original songs in performances that sparkle with wit and creativity. Writing and performing alongside double bassist Nicholas Thurston, and James Hatton on percussion, Richard is a master of the loop pedal, allowing him to build spellbinding arrangements through the recording and layering of his voice and instruments live on stage. The result is a virtuosic performance which, through soaring melodies, swirling harmonies and infectious rhythms, invites the audience to experience the songs taking shape before their very eyes.

Down To Earth

Monty Don is a renowned gardening writer and BBC television presenter, the nation’s favourite and most respected gardener. Hear him speak about his life and travels, what really happens behind the scenes when filming, about how he made his own organic garden from a bare field and how understanding and working with nature enriches and empowers us all. Monty is a committed organic gardener and President of the Soil Association. “The real importance of gardening is the empowerment that it gives people, however small or seemingly insignificant their gardens might be. It is surprising how liberating it is, if you can grow anything at all…” Running Time: 1 hour 30 mins + interval Ages: All Tickets £20, Friends £18.50, Restricted view £18.50

Gino D’Acampo – Gino’s Italian Escape Chef TV personality and best-selling author Gino D’Acampo is coming to the Margate Winter Gardens with a live stage show which will blend his love of Italy, some delicious signature dishes and audience participation, in a typically lively theatre show this autumn.

On April 14 2012 Donovan was rightly inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, who announced: “Donovan single-handedly initiated the Psychedelic Revolution with his album Sunshine Superman. This album also announced flower power and meditation, a whole year before The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” Donovan is a legendary folk-rock-pop poet who remains an important part of popular culture since his career began in 1965. He truly is one of the pre-eminent members of British rock royalty, and the creator of many innovative recording techniques, which influenced the styles of so many artists worldwide. Join him for this unique 50th Anniversary Tour date. Running time approx. 2 hours (including interval) Ages: 14+ Tickets: £28.50, Restricted view £25.50

Fun-loving Gino will take the audience on a journey through Italy, demonstrating how to cook some of his favourite dishes from his popular series, Gino’s Italian Escape – a third series of which will be on our screens later this year. He also plans to put audience members through their paces as selected fans are invited to join him on stage. One thing is for sure with Gino…you can expect the unexpected! Fans of Gino will love the live theatre show, which will feature a mix of cookery, Italian food tips and the chance to get up close and personal with the man himself. It promises to be ten nights of unexpected delight as it tours theatres across the UK. Gino D’Acampo said “…I can’t wait to meet audiences on my first ever theatre tour and share some of the fantastic food on a journey around my great country. I promise a fantastico evening!” Ages: Under 16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian; this is a live show and may contain some colourful banter which may not be suitable for young children Tickets: £24.50 VIP Package £75

Josh Widdicombe

Rhydian

A love story that puts the audience under the surgeon’s knife

What Do I Do Now?

With Special Guest Lucy Kay

A Journey Round My Skull is a beautiful and beguiling love story that really gets inside your head.

Josh Widdicombe, that guy from the TV comedy shows with the curly hair, is back on the road with a brand new tour. Since he’s been away from stand up Josh has been working hard on other things but don’t worry in his spare time he has found a lot of minor things to get annoyed about, and now he has a chance to talk about them on stage (in the form of jokes). If you have seen him before live or on TV and enjoyed yourself then this is the show for you. If you didn’t like him then it probably isn’t.

Rhydian, the double platinum award-winning, Classical Brit nominated Welsh baritone, returns to theatres this autumn to celebrate the success of his 5th, and latest Classical Crossover album – One Day Like This. He has also completed two successful tours and starred in Beauty & The Beast, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical Jesus Christ Superstar.

Using wireless headphones and a fantastical sound world, the audience is transported from their seat, to a scrap over profiteroles, into neurosurgery and onto the tracks of a ghost train. A Journey Round My Skull operates on the ears as well as the heart to dissect our most intimate relationships. A Bristol Old Vic Ferment commission. Waiting For Godot

Milton Jones And The Temple Of Daft Yes him with the loud shirts and messed up hair from Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow and multiple series on Radio 4. “Absurdist one-line masterpieces” The Times “He’s fast absurd and very funny” Radio Times “The best one-liner merchant in british comedy” Chortle “No-one can touch jones when he hits his stride” The Guardian

A country road. A tree. Evening. Vladimir and Estragon meet as dusk approaches. Estragon tries to remove his boot. Vladimir examines his hat. A conversation begins, a joke is interrupted. A carrot is eaten. The two men quarrel, then embrace. Unannounced, two eccentric travellers arrive. Seemingly master and servant, one stands weighed down at the end of a long rope, the other carries a whip. So begins Samuel Beckett’s 60-yearold masterpiece Waiting for Godot, a ground-breaking, anarchic meditation on the meaning of life and death.

Part allegory, part burlesque, Beckett’s unique, timeless play moves seamlessly between absurdist comic sketch and captivating philosophical drama.

An evening in the company of an idiot. Or is he? Yes he is. Only come if you like jokes though. If not you’ll be cross. Running Time: 2 hours (inc interval) Ages: Under 14s to be accompanied by an adult Tickets: £24

Since then, the Nerds have appeared across TV and Radio, at the Hammersmith Apollo and in their own peer-reviewed DVD - recorded at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre. This is the ideal way to get into the true spirit of Christmas. This magical evening will be the best Christmas present you can give! Theatre Royal Margate Associate Companies

Theatre Royal Margate will be supporting the following Kent based companies to create and present work to audiences in Margate and beyond. Mischievous Theatre, Third Party and StevensonThompson have all been chosen because they make relevant, exciting and accessible work which we want to see more of, especially here in Margate. We’re proud to be able to showcase their work at the Theatre Royal, with the ambition of helping them reach a wider audience. Mischievous Theatre CIC, based in Ramsgate and led by Clive Holland, was formed to create stimulating, provocative and mischievous theatre, to tour this work both nationally and internationally, and to encourage a greater involvement in the arts by the people of East Kent.

In collaboration with Third Party we have produced, to great acclaim, “The Sagas of Noggin the Nog”, which was a huge hit at the Edinburgh Festival. The five star reviewed show will tour nationally from October 2015. Mischievous presented a work in progress of their experimental new production “I Have Lost Myself” about the world of Alzheimer’s Disease, here in May. The company’s association with Theatre Royal Margate has enabled us to move forward with added confidence and conviction in our work. www.mischievoustheatre.co.uk Third Party has been producing touring theatre for twenty years in the UK and abroad, playing theatres, village halls, festivals and found spaces. The bulk of their recent work has been in collaboration with director John Wright and has featured strongly visual and physically expressive versions of classic plays. In 2009 they premiered their two language, two country co-production of “The False Servant” by Marivaux at the Theatre Royal Margate. In 2012, Third Party adapted the children’s classic The Sagas of Noggin the Nog for the stage, directed by John Wright. Following previews here at the Theatre Royal, the show went to the Edinburgh Festival in August 2014

to rave reviews, including 4 stars from the Independent and The Stage. Third Party and Mischievous Theatre are currently collaborating on a new and exciting project in search of new audiences for theatre… watch this space! www.thirdparty.org.uk Stevenson Thompson and the Moving Memory Company celebrate life-long creativity via projects that empower and equip older women with new performance skills. The company was created to challenge views of being an ‘old’ woman, of beauty, and to give older women the opportunity and a presence in the theatre world. Our work considers the funny side of things, the stuff of life. In order to reach as diverse an audience as possible, we often performance in public spaces, such

44 Margate Theatres Guide Autumn 2015 | Booking Fee 50p per ticket in person/phone, £1.50 per ticket online

as the streets, as well as theatre spaces. Our in-house company, MovingMemory is a company of women aged between 52-82, who produce work that makes Jo-public think again. The work is inspired by the stories the women bring with them, or their views and experiences of the world. Like the women, the work is gutsy, funny and moving. We are delighted to be associates to the Theatre Royal and want to extend our work in Thanet. We are setting up a new group in Margate, so if you’re interested, please email stevensonthompson@gmail.com. www.stevensonthompson.com

Get Involved By Volunteering * NEW * Pay What You Decide We want to take some of the risk out of going to the theatre and are keen for our existing audiences to come more often and try something new and for new customers to come to the theatre for the first time, so we’re piloting a new ticketing scheme on selected Theatre Royal shows. Book your ticket in advance in person or by phone and you won’t be charged a penny. Then after the show, you’ll be asked to Pay What You Decide, based on your enjoyment of it and what you can afford.

Our volunteer ushers are invaluable to us and we thank every one of them. Ushers cover a range of duties, from taking tickets, selling ice creams and programmes, to helping people to their seats. We are always on the look-out for people with • Good verbal communication skills • The ability to use their initiative • A high level of punctuality and reliability • A passion for the theatre and its audience

These tickets aren’t available online, and payment must be in cash please.

There are lots of benefits to being a Theatre Royal Margate Volunteer including selected complimentary tickets.

We’re confident you’ll be glad you came!

Call 01843 292795 to register your interest.

Get Involved By Giving Theatre Tours and workshops Our beautiful venues are regularly hired out to local community groups, but did you know that we can also offer bespoke packages of tours? Our customers range from schools to WI and local history groups, and as part of your visit we can also offer drama workshops tailored to your needs. Call 01843 292795 for further details.

Sponsoring a seat in the Winter Gardens or Theatre Royal is a great way to support the Theatre; they make an ideal present, can be used to mark occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries or remember someone special who enjoyed happy times at the theatre. Your seat dedication on a brass plaque can be up to 10 words long and will remain on the seat for many years to come. Call 01843 292795 for further details.

“I enjoy learning about dramas techniques, and creating things with other people.” Jamie, 9 “The youth theatre is what finally brought me out of my shell; I have made many great friends and learned my many skills” Will, 19 Theatre Royal Margate’s theatre groups have become a growing family over the past ten years. They comprise groups for 7 – 11s, 11 – 16s, Inspiration Inclusive and our new group – the Adult Company. The 2 Youth Theatre groups and Adult Company are run by Martin Gibbons, a professional actor, writer and director, who tours nationally withThe Pantaloons, directs work across the South East, and has a huge passion for his work at Theatre Royal. Our Inspiration Inclusive Youth Theatre is run by Zoe and Peter Hammond and is funded by Children in Need.

Theatre Royal Adult Company This year we are embarking on a brand new adventure! We are setting up a community theatre group for adults of all ages. The key aim of this group will to be to support a safe creative space for adults. Here you will have freedom to be creative, whilst being supported by a professional theatre maker. The focus of the group will be very different to usual ‘amateur’ companies. This will be a place where you can create your own work, have endless stimulus to devise, improvise, and be part of a brand new (none judgmental) creative community. No previous experience necessary, but all abilities welcome! Theatre Royal Youth Theatre and Adult Company programme: 7-11s: Saturday afternoons 5pm-6pm (Hartsdown Leisure Centre) 12 week terms, limited places: £50 per term

• Have a safe space to explore your imagination • Make new friends • Develop key drama skills • Create your own work • Perform in a major production for the public over 3 nights • Showcase your own devised work twice a year in the theatre • Be part of a growing community • Get to work each week in one of the most beautiful theatres in the country Further details: 07588 643255 youth.theatre@yourleisure.uk.com Inspiration Inclusive Youth Theatre (8-18yrs) The aim of our group is to cater for ANY young person who has a desire to perform! We believe the only label for our group is ‘Multi-abled’ because we believe that we all have skills and potential, and together we can all realise our dreams! ‘Inclusive’ literally means that anyone - whether deaf or hearing, using a wheelchair or not, needing extra support or not, can work together.

50 Margate Theatres Guide Autumn 2015 | Booking Fee 50p per ticket in person/phone, £1.50 per ticket online

We actively seek to bring together young people from all backgrounds and want to give them the opportunity to learn theatrical skills towards careers, or just for fun - learning how to communicate through voice, body, sign language and beyond. We work in diverse peer groups; and the biggest skill of all – to not only learn lines, physicality and cues but most importantly to support each other on and off stage so that no-one is ever left out. Led by Zoe and Peter Hammond alongside a large team of volunteers, all sessions are BSL signed. Members work towards a professionally supported show performed in the Theatre each Summer. So whether you feel that you “don’t fit in” at school/college, you want to make new friends, you love being around people, or you want to work in one of the most rewarding and fun groups ever... Then Inspiration is for you! Inspiration Inclusive programme: Tuesday evenings 5pm – 6.50pm erm time only. £2 per session (voluntary subs), at Queens Road Baptist Church, Broadstairs To join the group please first contact the leaders on: Inspiration-inc@hotmail.co.uk 07792 684227 Full details of our Theatre Groups can be found on the Theatre Royal website.
