And so the Special Times begin Welcome one and all to this September issue of What’s On. Yes, you’ve probably picked us up to find out ‘what’s on’ (aren’t we clever?), but you’ll be getting more than just a list of events and shows this month. You see, its September now, and that means that York is getting set to kick it into 12th gear. York does the autumn and winter like no other city on Earth, totally nailing the ‘aww, cosy’ feeling you get at this time of year. As the days get shorter, and as the temperatures drop, York finds its

SHOPPING

feet and gets on with being the best darn place to be. So, if you’re a local, and picking us up to check to see if that thing is on at the thing, no worries. However, if you’re a visitor to our great and regal city, there is one important thing you must know: please don’t disturb the leaf painters. If you see people high up in the branches of trees in the city and parks, seeming to paint the leaves a warm orange or fiery red, just let ‘em get in with it, okay?

You see, to save having to sweep up fallen leaves every autumn, in 1976 all the tress in York were replaced with plastic versions. It’s just something they did in the ‘70s. Because of that, the leaves need re-colouring twice a year to match the seasons. Leaf decoration is actually taught in all York schoolS, BTW. And, oh, if you see actual dead leaves on the ground, they’re not ours. They’ve probably blown here from Leeds, or arrived on the feet of travellers. Anyway, enjoy!

Over 60 years of creative work by Yorkshire artist Harold Gosney goes on display soon at York’s St Martin cum Gregory church. After successful exhibitions in Ripon, Grimsby and Scunthorpe between 2013 and 2016, this new exhibition opens in September 9th and brings together a wide range of sculptures, drawings and paintings, including work not seen in public before. Laura Turner, Curator at York Art Gallery says: “I’m delighted that visitors to St Martin Cum Gregory will have the chance to see more of Harold Gosney’s artwork in this unprecedented display. “Harold’s two sculptures on display at York Art Gallery are hugely popular and it will be very exciting to see more of Harold’s work, some of which has never been seen in public before.” Sheffield born Harold studied at Grimsby School of Art and London’s Slade School of Fine Art. The exhibition displays some rarely-seen examples of his early designs for theatre. Harold has worked in wood and copper with favourite themes being birds, horses and the female form. He developed a unique technique for working with sheet metal in three dimensions, exemplified by the impressive life sized horse and rider, now

permanently on display at Normanby Hall in North Lincolnshire. The artist explains how his approach has changed over the years: “When I experimented, first with cold cast metal and later with welding in steel and copper, I carried out a number of abstract pieces. “However, I soon needed a different challenge

My first sculptures in the early 60’s were in stone and were considerably inspired by the work of Henry Moore

and returned to work that was derived from observation and drawing, mostly inspired by human and animal forms. “My work, whilst not overly realistic, aims to consider the essence of subject,” Harold says. Preliminary and working drawings in the show illustrate the detailed artistic and technical development of the sculptural pieces.
