Bask in our warmth! August is always a bit hit and miss, here in dear old Blighty. You might fondly remember sweltering Augusts spent off school, at the seaside, in the park, necking Panda Pops and licking 99s. However, in reality the month of August can be somewhat unpredictable, and there is just as much a chance of a thunder storm than glorious sunshine. But relax, as we’re here. If you’re missing the blazing sun of summers gone, just stand near to our offices. Right now they are glowing like the corona of the sun itself, as we’ve worked ourselves into a molten mess preparing this month’s issue. The air conditioning has been working overtime, and the local Coop had to order in more ice lollies
for us – that’s how hot we’ve been. And it certainly hasn’t been a waste of time, as the August issue is a stunner. As well as fanning your face with it on a sticky day, we heartily recommend you read the contents, too, as there you will find our charity special feature detailing the recent hard work of York Against Cancer. You’ll also find all your usual favourites, from the history hopping Time Travel feature, to the Treasure Hunt, Gadget Guide, and expert advice columns. And lots and lots of events listings and advertiser details; so you can find the coolest happenings to attend, and also the coolest refrigerator repair person. Chill out, and see ya next time!

Rise to the occasion
With the kids off school, August is a great opportunity to spend some quality time together. Unfortunately, being an adult in a children’s’ play park is dull, so thankfully we have something for your family to do that grown ups will love. The Brew & Brisket on Wigginton Road is a steakhouse offering Tapas, an a la cartè menu, and Sunday roasts. As well as that you’ll feast verily on vegetarian dishes and sup deeply on a range of draught craft beer, and carefully selected wines and spirits. Check out www.brewandbrisket.co.uk
Despite all the sun and fun, the summer can be a truly stressful time for many people. If hiding alone in a darkened room hasn’t managed to calm you down, perhaps hypnotherapy could help? David Sear is a hypnotherapist who helps people to overcome negative elements in their lives, from stress and anxiety, to building confidence and helping smokers to quit – all from his studio on Stonegate. Whatever is causing you grief and worry, David could help... and he’s ready to do that for you. Visit www.davidsear.co.uk
Fancy a swanky dining experience? We have just that up for grabs - for you, and three of your luckiest friends. The Rise Restaurant, at The Grand Hotel, offers modern cuisine across a new ‘small plate’ concept, allowing guests to enjoy a feast of sharing dishes in an immersive and social dining experience. As you might expect, they serve only the best seasonal and ethically sourced ingredients, and the menu offers a twist on British favourites. Find out more, at www.thegrandyork.co.uk
The amazing news is that the restaurant is offering a family meal to the value of £50 for one lucky reader, and entering couldn’t be easier. Just answer this:

YORK LIFE
and life in general AS SEEN BY RACHEL RAGG
Think of the two most depressing words in the English language. Jeremy Corbyn? No: it’s far worse than that. Namely Saving Money. As everyone knows, this is a very dreary activity. In my case, it has been brought on by moving into a crumbling money-pit of a house (should have spent money on a survey, I now realise). Fortunately, I have a friend in a similar predicament, so we can Save Money together. Hmm, I wonder. What can we do to ease our financial predicaments? There’s one obvious solution: throw away the Boden catalogues as soon as they arrive. That represents an instant saving for both of us. But then she has another idea: only buy clothes in the sales. If Hobbs dresses have 50% off, buying two constitutes an immense saving.
I try this theory out in Jigsaw on Stonegate, with instantly pleasing results. In fact, it’s so pleasing that I find myself visiting Pure Collection too. Lots of money saved there. These are, of course, luxury items which I could reasonably sacrifice on the altar of a new boiler and rewiring. But then there are those items
Woodstone

which fall into the “need” category. And spending on these obviously doesn’t count as spending money. And so it is off to John Lewis at Monks Cross, where I find that I definitely need a goose-feather duvet (both necessary and in the clearance, so that’s money saved twice over). What’s more, I need a pepper mill, an iron (being fed up with my
Sellotaped one), and some tumble dryer balls. With those needs satisfied, I return home via Foss Islands, where I discover in Home Bargains that I need a whole variety of household items (from toothpaste to pan scourers to Pringles). However, they are all so cheap that I more or less didn’t buy them at all.
Feeling terribly pleased with myself for Not Spending Anything, I decide to spend Friday at the Wombells Auction preview. Because if you do buy anything at an auction, you do so in the knowledge that you can always sell it back. I think this is what’s known as a win-win situation. And, as we all know, everyone needs an ancient non-working black telephone, three boxes of crockery, various interesting-looking wooden items, two curtain poles, and a picture that will need an unconscionable amount of money spending on it. Another triumph for the Non-Spender, I think. What’s more, I also have a wardrobe to sell. So not only do I save money at Wombells, but I make money too.
I am a bit distressed to see that they are displaying said wonderful antique in the back room, along with old golf clubs and dead men’s drills. But I am optimistic that it will make my fortune.
YORK LIFE
Having thoroughly proved Ogden Nash wrong when he claimed that “a penny saved is impossible”, I save even more money by not having my squeaky car brakes looked at in the Raylor Centre. After all, I don’t really use the car much as riding a bike is completely free. Unless, that is, you have two cycling helmets stolen from outside the Minster in as many weeks, which makes it somewhat more expensive than driving.
That evening, I scour their website in anticipation, thinking of the goosefeather pillows I will now be able to buy to match my duvet. “Sold for £4”. Once I have paid the seller’s fee and minimum charge, I think that leaves me owing them £1.60. I knew I should have bid for the vintage calculating machine. Still, a trip to Wombells is a whole lot more fun than a world cruise and costs nowt, so I’m not complaining. Maybe I should plan a trip to hospital: free B&B, and no utility bills (another bore). Though given that I am yet again minus a cycling helmet, I ought perhaps to be careful what I wish for. There’s only one solution, really: a trip to Waitrose for a free coffee. But what’s this? A bill for £80 for a few vital groceries? Ah well. I shall ponder this while reading my free newspaper. Yet another £1.60 saved. My future career as Chancellor of the Exchequer starts now.

YORK LIFE
Dear Daphne, I am sick of being the designated driver on nights out. I don't mind driving now and again, but there’s hardly anyone in my friendship group that drives, and the ones that can, rarely offer. I’m sick of everyone wanting me to stay out late when I’m on diet cokes all night. I don't want to be standoffish but when it’s late at night I find myself losing my temper with them. Sincerely, Designated Driver, York
Dear
TAXI TANTRUM
Got a problem? OF COURSE YOU HAVE. Lucky Daphne’s got all the answers. Write to her care of Your Local Link and she’ll soon sort you out.
A friend frequently comes SOFA over late with tales of woe SURFER always hinting she wants to stay the night on our sofa. I always give in because it seems like she has such a rough life but I am getting tired of listening to one tale after another. Some of her stories are very farfetched and when I question her she clams up and says it’s all too much to talk about. How do I get to the bottom of this and reclaim my sofa and sanity? Rosemary from Stockton People love to tell stories more favourably and interestingly than they actually happened. We’re all guilty from time to time but when things get unrealistic, and you’re tired of the same rubbish
12
Hey Designated Driver, THIS IS EASY. Stop. Just stop doing it. Suggest getting a taxi or bus when your friends bring up a night out. That way, if they want to drive, they can get in their own cars and share the love (the ones that can). Your other friends will see no need to get a driver’s licence as long as you're ferrying them around, so a little bit of tough love is needed here. It needs to get harder for everyone else, before it gets easier for you. My advice here is pretty straight forward: if you don't want to do it, don't do it. Stand your ground and have a fun night out with everyone else. Daph x
on different days, these stories get boring. Maybe you've been so welcoming in the past that you've made a rod for your own back. It can be un-done. If your friend is in need of a place to stay, you can offer her sanctuary without company. Let her stay but explain you're busy that night - what’s a performance without the audience? As for getting to the bottom of why she's doing this: that’s a tougher nut to crack. You could confront her about it, or maybe ask mutual friends if they know what's going on with her, but other than that - you might have to live with not knowing. Go get your sofa back girl! Daph x
Dear Daphne, I acquired a new friend through an art class I went to last year. It was nice to have a companion in the classes and I thought we got on pretty well. We met up a couple of times afterwards and I decided that even though she's not a bad person, I don’t particularly enjoy spending time with her on a one-to-one basis. I tried to cool our friendship off because she was being a little full on, only to find that she’s booked a weekend away for my birthday. I’m absolutely dreading going away with her and feel terribly guilty about the whole thing. Help! J, Dringhouses

Dear Daphne, My good friends are getting married in church next month, the trouble is, I'm an atheist and really don't feel comfortable or willing to go and sit through the service. Can I ask to cut it out and meet them at the reception without offending them? Anon, Clifton
WEDDING WOE
Making someone's wedding about you is a pretty good reason not to go. But jokes aside, it’s their big day. Many people sit through religious services that they don't believe in for the sake of their friends, especially when they're paying for your three course meal afterwards, it’s called being part of a multicultural society. Do you think they will be offended? I think they probably would, especially if you're a good friend. However, if you have super understanding mates, who don’t take offence easily, and you really do feel so strongly about the matter, then I guess you could give it a go. Don’t come crying to me afterwards though. Daphne x

very full on. It’s hard to get out of something like a weekend away, because if you said you couldn't make it, they might change the date to suit you, and to pretend you were ill would be mean. So I suggest you go on the weekend away (sorry). Remember that every one burns at a different temperature, and just because your friend seems full on, it doesn't mean they’re as clingy as you think. To salvage your guilty conscience, I would try to treat them to something a bit more low key before hand, such as a meal out. Make sure they know that you’re JUST friends and you're not looking of anything else. After the holiday, try and back out slowly. It sounds cowardly, but bluntly telling someone you don't want to be their friend can be a bitter pill to swallow. What's more, you're probably dreading the weekend so much, that it will be much better than you expected! Good luck J!

Without feeling smug or complacent, you will nevertheless feel quite satisfied by the way things pan out in August. A few long standing wrongs are put to rights, especially in connection with relationships, and any legal aspects seem to serve you well. If there have been inner feelings of unfairness and injustice, then there is a gradual process of exorcism working here and by month’s end, even though not everything will have been resolved to your satisfaction, you’ll
be feeling more vibrant and confident than you were at the beginning of the month. In broad astrological terms, this is a time of change for many Leo-born people, and it is up to you to take charge of the process. Although this is a vibrant and exciting time in affairs of the heart, there may need to be some temporary separation between yourself and a partner, while one (or both) of you get sidetracked into some practical pursuits. However, the old saying “absence makes the heart grow fonder” is very applicable, and overall, relationships gain strength and purpose.
LIBRA 23RD SEP - 23RD OCT Old lovers come looking for second
chances, and while the final decision is ultimately yours, love is not always lovelier the second time around. Mother/son relationships undergo some change, especially if the son is now looking for greater freedom and independence. The 8th to the 21st seems to be a very bright time in connection with cash and careers.
SCORPIO 24TH OCT - 22ND NOV Younger members of the sign will enjoy some notable improvements on the job scene, while more mature Scorpios will be concentrating on
For your
SAGITTARIUS23RD NOV-21ST DEC In many respects a rather low key month, wherein no matter what is happening on the social scene, you feel isolated and frustrated. The cause of such feelings will be different for different people… everything from the state of the nation, to the state of your wardrobe. Older

members of the sign will realise that they are getting older – and they won’t like it.
CAPRICORN22ND DEC - 20TH JAN An exciting month, and for a number of different reasons. New additions to the family should bring a sense of joy and pleasure, and there are some very powerful energies connected with job satisfaction and long term security. Relationships are stable, but a partner may annoy you by their constant advice to slow down, and to finish what you have started.

TAURUS 21ST APR - 21ST MAR
Someone else’s mood may bring a degree of tension to relationships, but this is a passing energy and you must not get drawn into serious arguments. Older parents may meet future son or daughter-in-laws for the first time (whether they are recognised as such or not) and travel aspects take you along a north/south axis before month’s end.
The dog days of summer will see you feeling tethered and frustrated. You want to go to Bermuda and end up in Bridlington! It’s a rather stagnant month on the job scene, not helped by the fact that you have zero enthusiasm. Brighter notes creep in where relationships are concerned, and you will enjoy playing with some new toys.
PISCES 21ST JAN - 18TH FEB
GEMINI 22ND MAY - 21ST JUN
Potentially some conflict in parent/ child relationships and there are some arguments here that you can never win. There is a bright energy where romantic interests are concerned, with some lovely opportunities presenting themselves around the 10th. Career aspects are a bit doggy until the 23rd or 24th at which time they pick up pace and momentum.
A good month for buying and selling, either for profit or for fun! Out with the old and in with the new! If things are a bit slow between the 7th and the 15th this is made up for by a big boost of fresh energy coming in around the 16th or 17th which may have something to do with holidays and travel plans during the last couple of weeks of the month.
ARIES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR
CANCER 22ND JUN- 22ND JUL
Visiting friends and family in distant places is a weekend energy throughout the month, and other than that it’s a fairly routine few weeks. Job situations are unlikely to change much, although there may be some minor friction with a colleague around the 23rd or 24th. Romantic aspects are calm and finances are reasonably stable.
A subtle but easily recognisable change in the pattern of your luck, leading to a more positive state of mind and some renewed enthusiasm for a number of different projects. If relationships are not exactly the way you’d like them to be, take heart in the knowledge that they’re as good as they’re going to get, so you can learn advertori al to live with it or move on.

DO YOU HAVE A STORY TO SHARE?
Normally in this section of the magazine we encourage you to join groups and societies across the city, but how about joining the hallowed ranks of those whose portraits adorned the walls of Benningbrough Hall? As part of The National Trust’s Portraits Untold project, the stately home just north of York is looking to find people like you who would be willing to share their life stories while having their portrait painted by an artist. Called Prejudice and Pride, and celebrating 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality, the four day residency at the hall in October will see artist Tanya Raabe-Webber create live portraits of the sitters, while discussing what diversity means to them. An audience will also be present, creating their own artworks about the event, some of which will be incorporated into the final pieces. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, and you have a story to share, sign yourself up today; the closing date is 31st August. n Visit www.portraitsuntold.co.uk

No, not badgers, buckets, and Birmingham (what a weekend that was!), but rather three things that make the perfect August day. Bikes, Bakes, and Banter is a cycling group for women who meet up to ride, chat, and indulge in cakes. Set up to encourage more female cyclists onto their bikes, but without the competitive edge (unless you’re trying to determine who can scoff a Victoria Sponge the quickest), the social group like to challenge themselves with regular rides of 35-40 miles, exploring the local countryside and city. A great bunch, they are keen to recruit a few new members. If you’re interested, give them a ‘like’ on Facebook and say hi. n Visit www.facebook.com/Bikesbakesandbanter

ONLY THE COMPASSIONATE NEED APPLY Are you interested in the police and justice? Your career path might never have taken you toward law enforcement, but your spare time could be spent ensuring that enforcement is fair and humane. Independent Custody Visitors make surprise visits to police stations to interview detainees and check the conditions in which the are being held are acceptable, and that their human rights are being respected. This voluntary role can be massively rewarding – and also challenging – and North Yorkshire Police are looking for people who might be interested in receiving training and calling on stations in York, Harrogate, and Scarborough. If that sounds like something you might enjoy. nVisit www.northyorkshire-pcc.gov.uk/icv or call 01423 569562.

THE WEST END AWAITS If we told you there was a club you could join that one day might lead to you performing in a West End theatre, we’re guessing that the dramatically-inclined amongst you would leap at it, right? Well, for the students of the Pauline Quirke Academy, that dream became reality last month, when the stage school put on the musical comedy The Lazy Ace at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London. The run of the show was massively successful, and now the school is back in action in York, hoping to snag a few new pupils. Open to wannabe stars aged four to 18, and meeting at Huntington School, the academy is staffed by industry professionals and could lead to a very bright career in performing (or at least a tonne of fun!). n Find out more at www.pqacademy.com

Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: MORRISON’S MASSIVE CHIMNEY Ask yourself this: why is the Hazel Court recycling centre where it is? You could ask that of anything in York, and sometimes you'll work out the answer, other times not. But the reason why City of York Council decided to put their waste and recycling centre where it is today was heavily influenced by William the Conqueror. No joke. Stick with us kids...
DAMN! Following the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and his coronation
18
in Westminster Abby, William – who we've never admitted to being fond of – continued to bring England under his control. He was very mean to York, which resisted and rebelled against Norman rule for years, and, as well as burning most of the city down, he built a couple of castles here to keep an eye on our ancestors. Those castles needed a moat. By damning the Foss near to what is now Clifford's Tower, William flooded an entire area of York. Known as the King's Fishpool, in was where today we have Foss Islands Road (and the reason why there are no city walls around there – they weren't needed due to the water). However, as great as that was for that fiend William, by the 19th century the fishpool was a stagnant smelly mess, with the bad odours being linked to the outbreak of cholera in 1832. And so it was decided that it should be filled. With rubbish.
WHAT RUBBISH! Again, no joke – the people of York were paid by the cartload for dumping their rubbish into the fishpool, so as to raise the ground level and get rid of the water. It worked, and both the River Foss and Tang Hall Beck had their courses corrected, resulting in the flow of water we have today. But people kept dumping their rubbish around there. To deal with all that rubbish, which, due to York's booming population in the Victorian period, was becoming increasingly unmanageable, the City Corporation built 'The Destructor'. No, not a half man-half cyborg warrior portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, but rather an incinerator... with a very tall chimney. Built in 1899 the Destructor was daily charged with burning all the city's rubbish, as well as being used to generate electricity to
power a generator – York's first stab at energy efficiency.
CHIM-CHIMINEY...
YORK LIFE
From the 1920s the Destructor stopped producing electricity (a power station was built next door to handle that) and was used solely for the burning of rubbish, with the area around it becoming the city's dump; a role the area played right up until the start of the 21st century. When Foss Islands Road was being developed into the retail centre it is today, the dump was moved to a site nearby – Hazel Court, just off James Street behind the new retail units. That way, people didn't really have to go any further than they had in the past to dump their rubbish – which we've been doing there for 200 years now.
REMNANTS And the chimney, fortunately, was kept. All the supporting structures around it, such as the incinerator itself, have been removed; although it is still possible to see where the chimney connected to this, on the side facing Morrisons supermarket.
Built by Parker & Sharp, a local construction company, it was estimated to weigh 2120 tonnes, and was built on a wooden So... the next time you're walking foundation; something that started to around in Morrisons, or picking give out just five years later, resulting some plants in Homebase, consider in the addition of steel bands to the the tonnes and tonnes of Victorian chimney to help shore it up. They garbage that lay beneath your feet, are still there today. By 1902 the and how today we still use William Destructor was burning an estimated the Conqueror's precious fishpool as 180 tonnes of household rubbish a dump. 20374.15 HT YORK THE PRESS ADVERT APRIL 2015_Layout 1 14/04/2015 17:30 each week. YORK LIFE GIG OF THE MONTH
Oh Baby! OPEN MIC WHERE: The Nook WHEN: Every Friday 8pm-11pm INFO: Cafe by day, live music, cocktail and local ale bar by night. The Nook is tiny but gorgeous. I stumbled upon it’s open mic night one drunken Friday, and had the best time. They’ve got some ace regulars and anyone who performs gets a free drink. Perfect place to go if you’re after a more chilled night out. You’ll find The Nook at 3a Castlegate.
Next month, studio manager, Zoe, is leaving work for the biggest job ever. She’s going to be a mum! I am quite frankly livid about this. The Ying to my Yang, the Ben to my Jerry’s, the calm to my ever disruptive storm, is leaving me. In times of stress and worry, Zoe always keeps her cool while I'm freaking out and swearing. She has an exceptional eye for detail and a diary that is kept in immaculate order. She makes lists of all the things she's going to do and ace’s them. We like to plan the magazines as a duo, because if something goes wrong, at least we will be in trouble together. When I need reassurance or someone to listen to me whinge (and trust me, I whinge like heck) she is always there, and always on my side. She knows all about my friends and
family and I know all about hers. I know that her go-to safe lunch is an egg and ham salad, (The Co Op discontinued it, she was gutted,) with a carrot cake and Diet Dr Pepper.
“She’s going to be a mum! I am quite frankly livid about this.” She hates grime music, loves heavy metal and this will be the first year in forever that she hasn’t been to a festival. She bulk buys her cleaning products for her house, and has a dog that get’s
more haircuts than her entire family combined. We love Eva (the dog) she's super cuddly, loves humans, comes in every Friday and nicks our chairs and barks to let us know when someone is at the door, super handy, 10/10 good dog. Without Zo, I'm not sure exactly what I’m going to do for the next twelve months of her maternity; we’ve become a great duo, and I will miss her terribly. But I do know from working by her side for the past couple of years, that she's going to be a kick-ass mum with the kindest heart and the best organisational skills of all time, ever. I mean she’s had to look after me like a child for the past two years anyway, which is great practice in itself.

#orange ‘Rose gold hair is trendy’ I thought to myself strolling down the aisle of a well known highstreet shop, allured by the false promise of perfect hair dos in the home box dye department. I imagine my trail of thought was something like: ‘Yes, this pink hair dye will make me look sassy and fabulous. No I won’t check to see if it’s FULL OF BLEACH and going to RUIN my hair before I put it on, because I am a chuffing IDIOT.’ What was once a plethora of blonde highlights has become a patchy, orangey, mess mixed with a touch of pink. This look, I could have definitely rocked when I was 14. Paramore wannabe anyone? But, here I am: 23, full time job, car, bills and still making stupid decisions. I have made this mistake well over five times now since I started being
in control of my own hair, and to be honest, I wish my mum was still in charge because It would look way better right now. Up until this weekend, I was three years clean of hitting up the old home hair dye kits. But for some damn reason I just cannot stay away. To my fabulous hairdresser, if you’re reading this: You restored my hair to it’s former glory through regular cuts and carefully placed highlights. I’m sorry to have just undone three years of great hairdressing, but it’s all over now. I’ve done it again and I am dead embarrassed. So if anyone wants my advice: step away from the home hair dye kits (especially one’s with pre-lightner.) Call up your hairdresser, tell them you love them, and that you’re ready for your next colour.

TREASURE HUNT h t u o S ul if t u a e b e This month we’re getting lost around the labyrinth h T of streets in the South Bank area of the city. Join us, won’t you? We begin at the top of Albemarle Road where it meets The Mount. Start walking along Albemarle Road, heading into the South Bank area. • Warning! What's automatic? • What does SES not accept responsibility for? • What animals are referenced by a house along here? • How far to Acomb on the Orbital Route? Throw a left up Philadelphia Terrace. • Between what times is the school gate locked?
STEP 5
Turn right onto Trafalgar Street. • What colour is the horse?
STEP 6
Turn right again onto Balmoral Terrace. • What saint has their own club around here?
MEMORIALS
At the school, turn right onto the back lane that runs behind Sutherland Street. Note the tiles on the ground, possibly original Victorian, in pretty good nick. At the first opening, turn left onto Lorne Street. • When can't you stop on the entrance markings in the afternoon?
STEP 9
STEP 3
Follow the road to the left onto South Bank Avenue. • In what year was the stone, inscribed with a lovely bit of Latin, installed? (bonus points for the translation – without using Google).
Turn left onto Count de Burgh Terrace. • Still on the club... what association does it have with James Bond? • Who supports Knavesmire Children's Centre?
At the end of the street, cross over Campleshon Road and enter the brand new Chocolate Works housing development. • To what time is the clock on the sign permanently pointing? • Why might you NOT want to eat the Chocolate Orange around here?

STEP 11
At the top of the street, turn right back onto Balmoral Terrace and keep walking. • What Shakespearian family are referenced along here?
Turn left onto Bishopthorpe Road. Nearly there! • Bring your own what? • Name the rather splendid homes between Cameron and Aldreth Groves. • And finally... tying in nicely with our visit to his old factory, on what date did Joseph Terry help lay a foundation stone for the Methodist church?
Job done!

MARKETING ONE-TO-ONE by John Allsopp
MODE RN MARKE TI NG F OR BUSY BUS IN ESSES
“We need to stop interrupting what people are interested in and be what people are interested in” Craig Davis, former Chief Creative Officer at J. Walter Thompson. Imagine you run a cake shop. You, and perhaps only you, know which of your cakes sell best. Suppose it’s your Bakewell Tart. The market has judged all your cakes against competitors (other cakes, other sweet things, other things people could do with their money) and decided that your Bakewell Tarts offer the best ‘value’: perhaps the nicest sweet taste per penny spent. Why do you think that is? Is there a story behind your recipe? Is there an emotional side to that story? What’s your real purpose and how does your Bakewell Tart help you achieve that? What’s the change you want in the world? Are you trying to make the best cake? Are you trying to provide cake for all? Maybe you are the community cake shop, part of all the important celebrations. The answer determines how you market yourself.
26
When someone walks into your cake shop, they don’t know which is your best seller unless you make it clear. If you do, you are sharing community information for the benefit of your customers. What else do you know that would help your customers? Is there seasonality? (Yes, people lose interest around Christmas time (other than Christmas cake) and over midsummer.) Are ground almonds better at certain times of year? Can you offer ‘freezer packs’ so people can buy lots. What about cake club? How about asking for people’s improvement suggestions or ideas? Set up cake delivery (I heard ‘desserts’ is the fastest growing sector in Just Eat), deliver it using an old ambulance as ‘emergency cake’. How about we have fun with a video taste test or competition?
What are other bakers doing? What are the cake trends? (Vibrant green cake is a 2017 trend, I see.) Which 20% of your cakes bring in 80% of your profit? Why not stop baking the 80% of cakes that don’t really sell (and then encourage a protest group to protect your endangered cherry and marzipan cake).
If bakewells are your gateway cake, where are you taking people? What other cakes are popular, let’s get people to try those. Who’s in your community .. how about cooking Polish cakes or gluten free? What are your customers saying about you? Are you collecting reviews?
YORK LIFE
Could you create a supporters’ club and involve them more? Do people just eat their bakewells or do they add cream or custard? Which is best? Warm, hot or cold? Find out with free tasting sessions.

August; the most dangerous month for a football fan, when that dreaded feeling of optimism rears its ugly head. Preseason is always the best time to catch York City; they are built up to be absolute world beaters and the players instant legends, only to fall somewhat short when the real stuff starts. Before anyone detects negativity, I speak as someone who has witnessed four good seasons in 25 years of solid support. Back in 2008, we signed an Irish player called Niall Henderson who I missed appearing in a friendly game

where I had it on a solid (if drunken) recommendation that he was as good as Maradona. By the time I saw him pull on the red shirt it in the regular season he was more like Madonna and the only ray of light was that someone in the Irish premier league was willing to take him off our hands after six poor appearances. According to Wikipedia, he had a good season for Dungannon Swifts in 2010, so perhaps we were hasty in releasing him. Joking aside, it’s great news that the football season is upon us as regular TV just doesn’t cut it. I must have over a thousand channels and the best someone can suggest to me is a programme called Love Island. You know even Sky Sports are struggling
in the football off-season when they are discussing that Wayne Rooney still wears Everton pyjamas to bed. This is the same Wayne Rooney who has been widely praised for taking a pay cut to re-join his boyhood team. Not exactly voluntary work when £150,000 is hitting your bank account every week, but good luck to him if someone is willing to pay it.
League of their own
I must congratulate Celtic who have won the Scottish Premier League this season, but for competitive football action look no further than the National League North where York City will be hoping to gain an automatic return to the league they were just relegated from. I did say this last year, but in Gary Mills I have a bit more confidence, as do the bookies who have the Minstermen as favourites for the title. Saturday August 5th is the opening home game against Telford United before Darlington come to
OPEN DAYS WILL TAKE PLACE ON:
Bootham Crescent on Tuesday 15th, Nuneaton Town follow on Saturday 19th August, and finally FC United of Manchester conclude the August home fixtures when they arrive on Monday 28th.
As football returns, Cricket is nearing its peak with the County Championship drawing to a close and a mass of T20 to be played. Yorkshire’s season at time of writing is somewhat mixed, but the T20 format is one the side have competed in the past few seasons. I don’t think you can beat the sun beaming down on Headingley and watching T20. Perhaps the only person not a fan of the height of British summer is the guy inside Vinny the Viking (the Yorkshire Mascot) who must look like Lee Evans when he steps out of his costume at stumps.

LEARNING TO DRIVE? YOU’RE IN THE RIGHT PLACE According to a report survey, the place in the UK where the highest proportion of people fail their driving test is the West Midlands. The research, which was carried out by finance company Moneybarn, revealed that whereas the average pass rate was 48%, in the West Midlands this fell to 40%. Ha, idiots. Of course we can say that here in Yorkshire, which is one of the best places to pass, coming behind Cumbria and Northumberland. To be fair to the West Mids, the likes of Birmingham is a very built-up area, which is always tough on newbie drivers. Still... yar, boo, hiss!
Water causes car to catch fire Normally water is used to put out a fire, but in this particular case, it caused it. When a Mercedes got caught in a sudden flash flood in the Ross Township of Pennsylvania, the driver and passengers climbed out and paddled to safety. Obviously they thought their car would be safe, if a little damp, and waited for the flood waters to subside. But then their car burst into flames, despite being soaked through. The moment was caught on a passer-by’s phone, but investigators believe the water caused an electrical short which created a small spark. That spark must’ve found its way to some flammable material, and the rest is... well charred and ruined. Our writer Howard is planning on using this story as an excuse to never again wash the family car. You can’t be too careful...

Ah, China. If you're not worrying world leaders with your island building in the South China Seas, you're keeping us all entertained with your bonkers ways. Captured by a convenience store's CCTV in Zhenjiang, China, is the footage of a car being casually driven through the open doors of the store to pull up inside. The cashier rushed over to the car, thinking there to be some kind of emergency, only to find that the driver just wanted to buy a few items and didn't want to get out of his car due to the rain. Surprisingly, the cashier dashes about to collect the driver's shopping, before taking the cash and helping him to back out of the door. He even waved goodbye. We're not sure who was acting the most ridiculous; the driver or the cashier. We're pretty sure that, if we worked in a store into which someone drove their damn car, we'd be more than alarmed.

Oi, cancer! NO! Cancer doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in Hell in this city. That is because we have one of the most dedicated and hard-working charities in the country battling the disease every day, with research, education, and care. York Against Cancer this year celebrates 30 wonderful years of fighting a disease that touches so many people’s lives, and we join them by dedicating this special feature to the charity’s incredible achievements past, present and future. In 1987... … two surgeons, John Craven and Steve Leveson, thought that the facilities and care for cancer patients in York could be improved. The two doctors wanted to increase the level of care given to cancer patients, start to raise funds and awareness about cancer, and also pioneer research into cancer cures. Along with research scientist Colin Garner, they decided to do just that, and York Against Cancer was born. The former Mayor and local businessman, Jack Birch, accepted the role of the charity's first chairman, and YAC began working alongside York Teaching Hospital and also the University of York. There, the Jack Birch Unit of Molecular Carcinogenesis was established, where specialist research could be carried out to create cures and treatments for various forms of cancer. Meanwhile, fund raising drives were organised, education programmes were created alongside local schools, and volunteers were recruited. In three decades charity has helped thousands of people in their battle against cancer, saving many lives as a direct result of equipment bought and cures discovered. Also, the regular bus service through to Leeds Hospital has meant receiving treatment has been made easier for many more people. It's safe to say that, because of York Against Cancer's mere existence, our city is a happier, healthier place to live.
They need you It's true. They only way YAC can continue to function is if you get involved. Sure, the easiest way to help is to make a donation, but if you'd like get involved in a greater way, and make some great new friends while you're at it, you should sign up as a volunteer. There are so many volunteering opportunities with York Against Cancer, so no matter what your skills are, there is bound to be something for you do. YAC's volunteers take part in a mix of important jobs, events, tasks, and crazy fun - all of which helps to raise those vital funds. From collecting spare change on the street, baking cakes, and manning information stalls, to working in Telephone: the charity shop and helping to manage high-profile events, there's something for everyone to get involved with. n The best way to find out more and to express an interest in giving some of your time, is to either email the charity's office at office@yorkagainstcancer.org.uk, or pick up the phone and introduce yourself by calling 764466. You definitely won't regret it.

Very APPEAL-ing For their 30th anniversary year York Against Cancer are having a massive push for one very important appeal – one that will change the lives of thousands of people. Can you help? If you need cancer treatment and you live in central York, YAC's regular bus trips over to Leeds make it quick, easy, and free. However, for those living with cancer in areas far out of the city, such as Scarborough, Malton, and Bridlington, getting over to Leeds can be costly and inconvenient. So here's a thought: what if the treatment came to them? That is the thinking behind York Against Cancer's latest initiative, to buy new mobile chemotherapy unit to bring treatment closer to home for rural patients. Once up and running this summer, it will cost almost £1000 to keep it on the road each day, delivering chemotherapy to people who desperately need it.
Hitting the road The £700,000 mobile treatment unit is the
Shropshire, with input from teams within the hospital trust, including clinical, transport, estates and facilities, IT, and infection prevention. But, to get the service off to a flying start, the charity's birthday appeal aims to raise £100,000.
Where you step in There are lots of ways that you can help YAC raise that cash. The easiest way is to flip to the Events page in this special feature and pop along to a show or event that they have organised. You'll have a great time, as well as helping them out. Highlights include the Feather and Pearls Ball in September, and the Christmas Swing concert in December. Of course, donations are very welcome – and easy to do, as well. To donate with your mobile text YACP30 plus the amount of your donation, so either £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10. Then send to 70070. It’s also really
first in Yorkshire and, after being towed around by a truck, will be able to expand once parked to become a self-contained hospital ward. Trained medical staff will man the unit, and once it stops in certain places around the region, patients will be able pop along to receive their chemo. To be operated by the York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the unit has been custom-built in Telford,

As York Against Cancer are celebrating their 30th year this year, they’ve already had a great time. Here are a few highlights so far. simple to give online at www.yorkagainstcancer.org.uk YAC is also keen to hear from anyone who would like to hold an event or who can offer prizes for fundraising events, as well as from anyone who would like to volunteer at these events. Call 764466 or email office@ yorkagainstcancer.org.uk However you give, please do so generously. In York we might take for granted the services – many made available by York Against Cancer – right here on our doorstep. Living in rural Yorkshire might offer some stunning scenery, but it comes at a cost of local medical help. With your help YAC could make sure that nobody in our region has to suffer while being treated for cancer.
Slick new look What better way to celebrate three decades of important life-saving work than with a change? Earlier in the year YAC unveiled their new logo, featuring a modern, organic Y. The three colours of the Y represent the three things that the charity does every single day: care, educate, and research. We think it looks rather snazzy, so be sure to familiarise yourself with it.
involved with YAC. Find out elsewhere in this special feature how to do just that.
Streamlined No, not news of staff cutbacks within the charity, but rather some great news for the hat industry. People go to all kinds of different lengths to help YAC, but the marketing and events manger of York Mansion House, Anne Platt, worked out how she could raise thousands of pounds by sitting in a chair for a few minutes. Anne had all her hair shaved completely off for the charity, and managed to raise a whopping £4000! Anne lost her mum to cancer last year, and was herself diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in the year.

Recently held at Bishopthorpe Palace, and attended by the Archbishop himself, was a special afternoon tea honouring the charity’s many dedicated volunteers. 150 people attended, all of who have helped to keep the charity afloat in their own way, with a slap-up meal provided by the students of York College. Instead of losing her hair to chemotherapy, Anne took matters into her own hands... and what a job she did. Well done to her!
How far? If someone said they wanted you to join in with a sponsored cycle ride to raise funds for charity, you’d probably assume they meant to Castle Howard and back, right? Well, the York Pedallers, a group of local cyclists, decided to step up their fund raising efforts by several notches... and biked all the way to Paris. You know, that city in France! The group raised more than £14,000 in doing so, meaning that, over the many years that hey have been helping YAC, they have donated more than £100,000. That’s great news, and we wish everyone involved the very best, but... how do you cycle across the English Channel?
WANTED
And, if you don’t want to cross the sea... ...might we recommend you cycle from John O’Groats to Land’s End, instead? That is just what retired GP Dr Stuart Parker did, all in aid of YAC. Stuart smashed through his fund raising target while cycling the length of the nation, raising more than £2600. Well done to Stuart! Gosh, all these fit types doing incredible things for a worthy cause. We wonder if we could raise some dosh by making multiple cups of tea?notches... and biked all the way to Paris. You know, that city in France! The group raised more than £14,000 in doing so, meaning that, over the many years that hey have been helping YAC, they have donated more than £100,000. As we've already pointed out, York Against Cancer just wouldn't be able to function without the massive team of volunteers working tirelessly behind, and in front of, the scenes. But if you've ever wondered how good those volunteers are, just ask the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Barry Dodd CBE. In September he'll be awarding the charity the country's most prestigious recognition for volunteers, the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, in which a crystal dome and certificate signed by the Queen will be handed over. York Against Cancer’s general manager, Julie Russell, visited Buckingham Palace as part of the Queen’s Award, saying “It’s particularly fitting that the award has come in this, our 30th anniversary year, because it is the selflessness and dedication of our volunteers that has made us the success that we are today.” If you fancy getting involved yourself,

Saving lives already You might expect to wait a while to see the direct results of a new piece of medical technology, but not so with York Against Cancer's latest investment. A Dermatoscope funded by the charity was able to identify suspected skin cancer just days after being given to a local GP. He was able to snap an image of a patients's mole, which had recently changed shape, and immediately forwarded it to a dermatologist who diagnosed cancer. Treatment began straight away, and the patient's prognosis seems excellent. York Against Cancer provided £26,000 to purchase 37 Dermatoscopes for local GP practices, and its great to see that they are already being used in the best possible way. Dr Dan Cottingham, GP MacMillan Cancer Lead for NHS Vale of York Clinical
Commissioning Group, said: “The use of this technology, allowing specialised photographs to be sent electronically to the local dermatologists, has enabled the swift diagnosis of a worrying skin problem.” Meanwhile, YAC's Chairman, Professor Steve Leveson, said: “It is really great that York Against Cancer can be involved in such a useful project based in primary care. Skin cancers are the most common cancer in this country. I am sure that the use of dermatoscopes will save many unnecessary referrals and will speed up access in the appropriate cases. It will produce a significant cost saving to the NHS.” So if you notice a change in a mole, or indeed anything unusual on your skin, thanks to the new Dermatoscopes your GP might have answers for you sooner than you think.
their families to spend a bit of time away from York and enjoy a break, for free. Now, patients undergoing cancer treatment at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust can apply for a stay at a new property in Filey. The beautiful four-bedroomed house can sleep up to eight people in comfort and style with modern furnishings and luxurious fixtures and fittings. There’s a balcony and sun terrace for sunny days, and a wood-burning stove for cool days and evenings. An amazing five-mile beach is on the doorstep and the house is part of The Bay, an exclusive, award-winning coastal holiday village, complete with parkland, a leisure complex, a pub and a restaurant. n If you think you are eligible for a stay at the new house, give the charity a call on 764466, or visit www. yorkagainstcancer. org.uk/ourholiday-homeswhitby-and-filey for more info.

“Millenial pinks blow the notion that boys don’t like it out of the water and it’s these versatile soft muted shades that contain hints of grey like Nutmeg Cluster 4 that tick all the boxes. Pink adds warmth and sunshine to rooms that have small windows and north facing light. They also create a sense of gentle intimacy in grown up spaces where we are with the ones we love. Millenial pinks are the equivalent of a visual hug in a room so use this colour like a tool for soothing the soul and calming the senses. So, after last month’s sideways look at Star Wars, I thought I would try and keep all sides of the intergalactic nerd battle happy and make reference to that other great sci-fi institution, Star Trek! If you’re a bit of a geek like me, you will be familiar with the mesmeric Patrick Stewart whose super cool Captain Jean Luke Picard lead the plucky crew in countless pointless escapes involving green creatures of dubious origin. And the captain's most memorable saying (other than “engage”) was “Tea, Earl Grey, hot”, a command he gave to the ships drinks machine in his commanding Shakespearean tones. Voice control may still seem like a thing of the future, but currently manufacturers are all rushing to try and make their products voice control ready.

The smart revolution has already put the control of all sorts of music systems, TVs and even ovens and toasters at our fingertips via a phone or tablet, but now simple integration with vocal recognition products like Amazon’s Echo make it possible to speak to your oven and make it bow to your every command. Do you need this? Yes, is the simple answer. The interface between man and machine has always been one of the major sticking points in the design of any product; if we can speak to our products, and be understood, then programming them will become so much simpler. You can become commander of your own kitchen, going boldly forward to pick up the coffee you just asked your machine to prepare you using only the power of your voice. The applications are endless and the benefits enormous; smart products have just been given a real leg up. The future is here, now! n Visit www.htodd.co.uk
CREATING THE SPECIAL AMBIENCE We hear from Mel Collier of JDL... To many people a bathroom is more than just a room for your ablutions; it is a safe haven at the end of the day where you can relax, unwind and have a few minutes away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. When having a new bathroom fitted, a lot of people forget this fact and enter default mode of harsh bright white lighting, and when you couple this with predominantly white pottery and the extractor fan whirring above you, your senses are immediately awoken... not relaxed! Here at JDL we offer the whole sensory experience and the results can transport you to a luxurious spa in the comfort of your own home.
IN THE BEGINNING... First consider the lighting. By installing different forms of mood lighting your bathroom can go from harsh to welcoming. LED tape lighting can be placed underneath basin shelves and
in alcoves to highlight your accent pieces, and can be in warm amber tones or cool white tones depending on the mood you are trying to create. Adjustable downlighters on a dimmer switch can be installed, and even mirrors and cabinets now come with integral lights. Once the lighting is as you want it, think about media. Our fully trained and qualified electricians can fit a sound system such as Sonos with ceiling speakers, linked to your own device so that you can play your own music directly into your bathroom. Whether your taste is pop, gospel, classical, R & B or heavy metal, you will feel fully immersed in your own individual bathing experience (in some cases, your bath can even double up as a speaker so you can hear music both above and below the water level!). The most important thing to remember when undertaking anything electrical in a bathroom or wet environment is that all the work needs to be undertaken by a qualified electrician using specialist products. Luckily at JDL we can offer all the services you require under one roof to turn your dream into a reality!

Botanical bohemia
In these fast-paced, digital times, consumers look to their homes for natural comfort. Whether it’s raw textured materials or a plethora of plants, bringing nature into your home is a must.
Let love grow
Palm trees are still a force to be reckoned with in the world of trends, but cacti and succulents are taking over the botanical world. More is more when it comes to plants - we don’t want to see a lonesome little sprout in the centre of your windowsill, we want a mini jungle, reducing carbon dioxide levels by the bucket load. Think about buying 5 - 10 different sized plants and huddling them together on a shelf.
Woodn’t you like to know
Natural aromas
Step away from the paint, we want something we can feel, touch and smell. Cue natural wooden surfaces, second hand furniture and recycled materials. Chip board and reclaimed wood are proving to be cheap and attractive materials seen more and more in the home.
TROPICAL PARROT WALLPAPER £16 from B&Q
Exotic animals
Following on from tropical themes, desginers have turned their attention to exotic animals, taking inspiration from the wonderous creatures of the world, and replicating them in the form of art, ornaments and wallpaper. Expect to see parrots, flamingo’s and plenty of brightly coloured birds in a home near you soon.

Conrad from Bradshaws Direct offers tips and advice on how to look after your pond and fish. Sorry to burst your sunny bubble here, but soon the summer will be over and the pond keeper’s thoughts should turn to the autumn. Still a time to enjoy your pond, the autumn months bring a few new challenges to make sure that your pond is in good shape for the winter. Fallen leaves are a pain in the bum for pond keepers. They turn into a layer of brown, smelly sludge when they drop into your pond, looking unpleasant and also creating algae problems next spring and summer.

The answer? Don't let them fall in there. If you have a raised pond, you should be okay, but look out for overhanging branches and trim those back. For traditional ponds a net that covers the surface is advisable, but be sure to get your net in place early enough to catch them all, Also, keep checking it so the middle doesn't droop into the water and the caught leaves go soggy. If you don’t want to cover your pond, get the fishing net out to scoop up leaves while they are floating. If it is too late for that then the sludge and leaves can be removed with a pond vacuum before they do any damage. Either way, keep a sharp eye out, and you'll save yourself a lot of bother next Spring. n For advice call 698801.

g n i w o r G s a i s Fuch See our voucher for a FREE HOT DRINK on page 75.
Single flowers having four petals, Semi-Doubles with five, six, or seven petals, and Doubles having eight petals. Also I think Fuchsias are a great addition to the garden or show bench due to the fact they are easy to grow and can be grown in a variety of styles (eg. Shrub, Standard, Pyramid, Hanging Baskets, and Espalier). To create a Fuchsia bush that will give you great colour all season long, you will need to: STRIKE A CUTTING – This means putting the end of the cutting into a rooting power, then into a growing medium. When roots have developed the cutting has ‘struck’.
The beauty of growing Fuchsias is that there is such a large expanse of colour and flower shape, ranging from Singles, Semi-Doubles and Doubles.
POTTING UP – The term Potting Up means you take the cutting which has ‘struck’ and pot it into its first pot, allowing the plant to continue root development and nutritional intake in order to grow healthily. STOPPING OR PINCHING OUT – In order to create an even bush, once the cutting has reached the desired height, you simply ‘pinch out’ the growing tip back to the next set of leaf nodes. These in turn become the new growing tips, each time this is done you are doubling the growing tips, making your plant bushy and creating more branches in which flowers will come from, thus giving you a better show in the summer months. FEEDING – Fuchsias definitely benefit from supplement feeding, but
which one do you use? Cuttings or plants which have just been potted up into new compost should have sufficient feed from that compost to last around five to six weeks. It is after this period that you will need to feed. A general rule of thumb is to use a high Nitrogen feed early in the season; this will make the Fuchsia put on plenty of leafy growth early on, allowing you to create a network of branches as explained in the Pinching Out stage. Once achieved, it is best to move onto an equal strength Fertiliser, as this will keep the plant looking healthy whilst helping also to promote flowers. A high Potash Fertiliser can be used as it will enhance flower colour and performance, but it also ripens or hardens the wood (if growing varieties that need over-wintering, this will make it more difficult to get
them to grow in their second year, as the Potash hardens the wood so much). PREPARING FOR WINTER – Greenhouse or outdoor varieties are usually treated the same (other than the heat element). Once the cold weather arrives, you should notice the leaves begin to fall; this is when you should bring indoor varieties into the greenhouse. Once inside I would remove all the leaves by hand, as this will help prevent fungal disease. The same applies for outside varieties, although it is not as crucial. Do not prune until the next spring, when you can see where the plant is growing from, as you may find you get some die back. Therefore the more plant you have above ground level the better, over the winter months, as the ends will absorb the worst of the cold weather.

GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? Ask
CHRIS BROWN from BROWN NURSERIES If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.
Q.
I've noticed that my tomato plants leaves are flagging. Is this a shortage of water, and what can I do to stop this happening?
Water is necessary for the growth of all plants, both as an essential chemical in its own right, and also as the solvent within which other nutrients are dissolved. Its shortage in the soil, or sometimes in the air, can result in conspicuous damage and ultimately the death of plants with large, smooth leaves. Vegetable plants are particularly prone to damage from this shortage. Shortage of soil water may result from lack of rainfall or poor water retention by the soil, while a dry atmosphere can be caused by low humidity, wind, or high temperature. This then causes desiccation in the plant because it loses through its its leaves more water than it is able to replace through the roots. Therefore wilting occurs. A common symptom on tomatoes and capsicum peppers is blossom end rot, a problem caused by an imbalance of calcium within the plant, which is very often brought about by water shortage. A dark-coloured sunken area arises at the blossom end of the fruit. With dry air, the symptoms are similar to those induced by soil drought, but the browning or scorching of the leaves is the prevalent symptom.
Maintain adequate, but not excessive, watering of plants at all times. Take particular care at the time of flowering and when the fruit are forming, and pay special attention to tomatoes or other plants in growing bags as the compost can easily dry out. Dry air and its effects cannot be avoided outdoors, but in greenhouses, spray plants such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and vines at flowering time with water in the morning or evening to aid pollination, and feed fortnightly with a high potassium fertilizer.
Moist soils with high organic content support large populations of slugs, so some relief is given by cultivating frequently and thoroughly to expose eggs, young, and adults to predators and weather. In addition, they may be trapped by laying old lettuce or cabbage leaves, grapefruit skins, old sacking, and other material on soil surfaces on warm, humid evenings. Once caught, kill slugs by dropping them into a strong salt solution or very hot water.
Q.
Alternatively, sinking shallow dishes into the soil and fill with beer. The beer attracts the slugs, intoxicates them and then they fall in and drown. Beer remains, effective for two to three nights but you could also use slug pellets, although read the instructions carefully as some can be harmful to pets and hedgehogs. Personally, I wouldn't waste good beer on slugs! Still, best of luck.
I have a big problem with slugs and snails in my garden. Can you give me some advice on how to keep my garden free from damage, please?
The weather recently has been ideal for slugs and snails, as they thrive in damp, warm, and humid conditions. The effects of many species of slugs and snails are similar since they all feed by rasping plant tissues with a toothed tongue. Irregular holes are eaten in roots, bulbs, tubers, stems, leaves, buds, flowers, and fruits. Most feed at night, with slime trails revealing their nocturnal activity. Damage to plants is generally most severe during warm, humid periods in spring and autumn. Tubers of potatoes are extensively damaged by subterranean slugs.

VICTORIA, QUEEN OF PLUMS TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS.
TASTY
This looks to be a vintage year for plums. After several years of modest pickings, most of my trees are carrying good crops. The heaviest cropping tree by far, out in wilds of the field orchard rather than the sheltered garden, is the Victoria plum. As I write it is laden with fruit. Barring disasters such as monsoon rain or gales or, more likely, broken branches caused by the weight of the crop, late August and early September promise a bumper harvest. The Victoria is Britain’s best known plum and old trees can still be found in many gardens. While the exact origin of the variety is unclear, as the name suggests it dates from the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign. Young trees can still be bought from nurseries today but there are also newer similar varieties such as Avalon and Jubilee. I have the latter and find it a slightly more reliable cropper and less trouble prone than Victoria.
DANGERS
Victoria plums are not my favourite flavour wise. For fresh eating gages have are far more tasty and there are quite a few varieties that cook just as well if not better. Victoria’s virtue is that it is dual purpose, suitable for both cooking and eating. If you’re used to the hard and tasteless plums sold in shops all through the year, Victoria plums, whether fresh or cooked, will be a revelation. For eating make sure a Victoria is fully ripe. The skin should be dark red to purple in colour and soft when bitten. This year’s bumper Victoria crop is probably the result of the very mild spring. Like most plums Victoria is very susceptible to frost damage at blossom time. Some years a sharp frost in early April can wipe out most of the crop. Unfortunately, Victoria is also prone to a number of other problems. Of all the common plum types it’s probably the most affected by silver leaf. This is a fungus which causes leaves on infected areas to develop a silvery sheen. Whole branches and even the entire tree can die. To reduce the risk of infection minimise pruning, especially in winter.
ALL GARDEN WORK ANDREW KENT
Hedge cutting Tree pruning & maintenance Mowing | Fencing
Perhaps the other main problem is plum moth which seems to have become more prevalent in recent years. Damage is caused by adult moths laying eggs which hatch and mine the developing fruit. It’s often not until a plum is cut for cooking, or worse still bitten into fresh, that the presence of the maggot is discovered. I find that moth damage causes affected fruits to ripen early so it’s probably best to be especially wary of those tempting first ripe plums and take a precautionary nibble rather than a big bite. While we’re discussing dangers, watch out for wasps! Ripe plums are a magnet to wasps and it’s not without reason that one of my uncles used to disparagingly refer to his Victoria plum as ‘just an old jasper tree’. But don’t let me put you off. Victoria, as with all plums, may have its fair share of snags, but in a good year such as this a tree laden with its ripening reddish purple fruit is one of the great treats of the late summer garden.

Sarah has something to say. Just keep it to yourself, will you? By the time you get this month's magazine, your kids will have either finished school for the summer or just about to leave. Either way, you've probably already seen the signs in shops urging you to get the kids ready for 'Back to School'. Give me a break. My two kids have grown up a bit now, but I always remember wanting to savour the time they had off, despite me still having to work. Instead of worrying about getting them set to return, I wanted to embrace the summer and spend as much time as I could outside with them. I hope you do the same. And look at it this way; these days there is so much more going on in York for families to do than there was when my kids were little. And there aren't as many Viking raids these days, either. Yay! Self-burn! So ignore the shops pressuring you to buy all their kit RIGHT NOW. There will be pencil cases still left in Smith's on the 1st September. Instead, take them out, let them explore, and give them a chance to make some truly great summer holiday memories.

I'M POTTY ABOUT THIS Excuse the bad pun (its the only kind I do), but I'm genuinely excited about these fun school holiday activities. At Bish Bash Pot on Walmgate they have a whole series of sessions available in which your youngsters can make and paint their own ceramic object. It could be an animal (I saw a picture of a pot tortoise on their website – I want it and I'd name him Sheldon McPotface), a plate, or even clay imprints from things they find out in the wild. The offer weekly courses that run the length of the holidays, and also one off classes to fill a fun afternoon. And they also run Ladies Nights, with the next one on 18th August, where girls can gather, decorate whatever they fancy, and take it home. Sheldon, I'm coming for you! n Anyway, if you're looking for a fun time this month, check out www.bishbashpot.co.uk
My two are waaay too big for me to pick their bags, but here are three excellent backpacks to help get younger kids set for September. MADPAX SPIKETPLUS REX BACKPACK. Careful not to jab yourself on it! This fun backpack is covered in soft spikes and is certainly eyecatching. Despite the crazy looks it still features several large pockets and even a laptop sleeve. n £45 from www.cuckooland.com ASDA BUTTERFLY PRINT RUCKSACK. Cheap as chips, but also very handy. This backpack features comfortable shoulder straps, roomy internal pockets, and exterior pockets for shoes of a water bottle. And come on, this ain't breaking nobody's bank! n £4 from www.direct.asda.com FJÄLLRÄVEN RE-KÅNKEN MINI. Swedish company Fjällräven have been making these backpacks since the 1970s to help kids be more comfortable at school. CAMPING FOR INTROVERTS Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.
I'm an introvert. This I declare proudly. You see, introversion and extroversion have nothing to do with confidence, as some mistakenly believe. The difference – and this will aid in your own self-classification – is whether or not a person is either drained or uplifted by other humans. Does spending time with other people make you feel mentally and physically exhausted, or do you feel invigorated and energised in the company of others?
I get drained, more than you'd believe possible for a normal functioning adult, to the point where, after social situations, I HAVE TO get away and be alone. At uni my friends would speak of two Howards: the one at the beginning of the night filled with vim and vigour, encouraging everyone to scale the city walls whilst drunk, and the other who would sit blankly, silently waiting for an appropriate moment to leave. I once mapped my social enthusiasm on a graph, but then immediately tore up it because that was a weird thing to do.
spending time with my kids (despite having to tackle a barrage of questions like: “Why do you like green?”, “Why can't I eat wood?” and “Why are birds?”), although I do get physically pooped by the end of the day. Still, at least then I can retreat, with bairns all a-slumber, to the sanctuary of my desk, to look at old maps, watch
YouTube videos about old maps, and ponder on theories about old maps. Y'know, typical man stuff. However, that nightly retreat goes out the window when you're camping, which we recently did. As well as packing all three kiddos into the car, my wife had also arranged to go with friends, to let our kids and

POINTERS Don't get me wrong – these are nice people that I know quite well. There were no new people there to ask me questions that fluster me like, “How are you?” and “Can I help you put that tent up?”. But still, being unable to retreat, even at night when the adults gathered by the cooling gas stove to chat, made me a tad anxious. There's only so many times you can “pop to the toilet” before people become suspicious.
“THAT WAS A WEIRD THING TO DO”. And so, to help other similarly afflicted introverts who might be camping in a group, I complied a list of things that helped me deal with the weekend. Some more feasible than others. • Pitch your tent last. If you put up your tent first, others will have a tendency to pitch theirs close to you, as is custom in our tribal society. If you're last, you can pitch it further
out, creating a bit of breathing space 'twixt you and the others. • Fake an illness. No, not hepatitis B or something, but more like a dicky tummy. That way people won't think its weird that you went to bed at 8pm, or that you're sitting silently, mentally naming star constellations.
YOUR FAMILY
theirs run riot nature-wise, while the grown ups... do the socialising. With the chats and talks. Feelings. Y'know.
• Take a drone. I recommend taking a drone everywhere (except the field next to an airport), and doing so on a camping trip will give you a great excuse to bugger off for a bit. The kids will follow you, to watch you fly, but that's okay. WARNING: Don't take a drone if you're camping with another adult who also likes drones. • Wear colour-coded hats. You could take both a green hat and red hat, and hand out a laminated instruction sheet to all other campers. It should say: If hat green – okay to chat. If hat red – please no chat. My wife once banned me from handing out business cards that read: I'm not being rude, I just wish you would all go away.' Hope those help. I actually really enjoy camping, especially because the kids seem to thrive in the outdoors, and – so far, at least – in the company of friends. If any of this strikes a chord, and you feel you might be as introverted as I am, I really don't care.

Look at our monthly Give Us a Home column, and you'll see that every month we help a few lovely animals to find new homes. But, if you're looking to adopt a new pup, how about checking somewhere other than the RSPCA? How about Romania? Unlike here, Romania doesn't have any animal protection laws, meaning many dogs can end up abandoned and in need of new homes. Rags to Riches is a newly-formed charity, originally local to the York area, that helps to
make that happen, finding stray and mistreated dogs in Romania and bringing them here to the UK to find loving new families. As the organisation actually fosters the rescued pups in their own homes, they are able to perfectly match them to the right people. A great way to help animals in need. n Find out more about Rags to Riches (and see what dogs are hoping for a fresh start), at www.rags-2-riches. co.uk

CARE AND CARE ALIKE Bits and bobs for those who care for someone
Help and advice if you care for someone with dementia •Memories Dementia can affect short-term memory, so a good way to engage with someone living with the disease is to refresh older memories. Try looking at old photographs, listening to music, or even watching older films they may have once enjoyed.
•Walking Someone with dementia might occasionally pace about the house;
66
this might be to look for something they can never find, or in an attempt to continue with an old routine. Make sure you take regular accompanied walks with them, to allow them to get plenty of exercise.
•Aggressive behaviour Often someone living with dementia can display aggressive behaviour. This is commonly a side-effect of the disease, and usually means the person is upset by or afraid of something. Talk to your community psychiatric nurse, as he or she might be able to suggest something to help.

TRIED & TESTED
STAY GOLDEN When it comes to a summer glow, it’s best to fake it, rather than make it. Don’t listen to fools - a tan is much safer bought than earnt! So for those of us who didn’t get to go on a two week holiday to Mexico this summer, here are the latest tan products to help you fake, make or accentuate that golden summer glow.
LIMITED EDITION BAYWATCH ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL 5 IN 1 TANNING MOUSSE What they say: Its specialist multi-tasking formulation will provide extra moisturisation, a luxurious luminous finish and a longer lasting tan. What we say: “The instant colour guide helps makes sure mistakes are kept to a minimum - Thank you St Moriz! This is a great tan for beginners because it’s easy to apply and you can see what you’re doing. The scent is a big improvement on traditional tanning smells too.”
£7.99 | www.Superdrug.com VITAGE® ILLUMINATING TANNING DROPS What they say: Transform your daily moisturizer with these highly concentrated, gradual, self-tanning drops giving you a flawless, natural-looking glow with the added benefits of your everyday face and body moisturizer. What we say: “Being able to control the strength of the tan was great. The fact that we could mix the drops with our favourite scented moisturisers was a big plus too. For our faces, we added it to our usual facial creams. After half a day, there were subtle, streak free tans all round. But we will bravely put a few more drops in next time.”
P R E -T A N P R E P • CLEAN, DRY & COOL Just like your favourite food products, you want to be all of the above. Oil, dirt, sweat and water on your skin are causes of a patchy tan. Jump in the shower, towel dry yourself and then spend 10 minutes air drying before you start. Avoid putting deoderant on too - it goes green.
• ICE, ICE BABY If you have large pores, putting frozen peas over the area before you tan will encourage them to close up. • LAST PLACE If you’re tanning for an event, make sure you do all of your hair removal before hand. Shaving and waxing can remove your hard earned tan.
APIBRONZE ANTICELLULITE BRONZING GEL 200ML What they say: Age-defying bronzing gels with Purified Bee Venom (PBV™) and Manuka Honey. Enjoy a natural golden tan all year round that develops in one hour. What we say: “We have no idea why they don’t shout about the amazing smell more. We would wear this fake tan as a perfume, let alone a fake tan. Oh and it’s great at that too. It made legs look smooth and golden in less than two hours. Perfect for a last minute tan before a night out.

“Put the tweezers away and kiss goodbye to the razor” in the UK after taking America by storm. The treatments are exceptionally fast, painless, and – of course – permanent, and are also offered at a very affordable price. Treatments start from just £45 and are carried out right
The hairremoving laser is swept over the specific area of skin, gradually destroying the hair follicles while leaving the skin undamaged. A typical treatment session takes around ten minutes and all you will feel is a mild, warm sensation of pins and needles. Some patients see the results instantly, while others might have to wait a short while depending on their hair growth cycle.

GIG GUIDE
ROBIN HOOD: THE ARROW OF DESTINY (4TH AUGUST-2ND SEPTEMBER) It's all very well stealing from the rich to give to the poor, but when you have no sense of direction then mayhem ensues! Robin Hood is lost in Sherwood Forest. It's not his fault; there are a lot of trees. But once again it falls to Maid Marian to save the day and get him and the Merry Men out of a scrape. They may wear the tights, but Marian knows what really makes a hero. A summer swashbuckling show for all the family as the team of actor puppeteers retell this classic story of heroism, valour, and the power of legendary teamwork with songs, slapstick and spectacle.
PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT: THE MUSICAL (8TH-16TH SEPTEMBER) York Stage Musicals brings the camp classic Priscilla Queen of the Desert: The Musical to the Grand Opera House York in a brand new production. Based on the smash-hit movie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert: The Musical is the heart warming, uplifting adventure of three friends, Tick, Bernadette and Adam, a glamorous Sydneybased performing trio who agree to take their show to the middle of the Australian outback.

What they certainly don’t expect to see at the door is a big, stripy
STEPHEN JOSEPH THEATRE, SCARBOROUGH TAKING STEPS (UNTIL 5TH OCTOBER) When tongue-tied solicitor Tristram is sent along to oversee the sale of a large and crumbling house, reputedly a haunted former brothel, he may have bitten off more than he can chew. THE TALES OF TIPSY WILLOW TREE (UNTIL 26TH AUGUST) Poor old Tipsy Willow Tree has lost her magic. What use is a fairy without magic? Oh, it’s not like anything! Come and help Tipsy find her magic and meet goblins, giants and all sorts of other magical people along the way. The usual Tiny Time Tales fun and nonsense with plenty of joining in. THE RISE AND FALL OF LITTLE VOICE (UNTIL 9TH AUGUST) In turns brutal and tender, terrifying and exhilarating and this production will serve up the perfect cocktail of northern grit and Hollywood glitz. It’s also packed with hilarious characters and hit songs. Bold, brassy and bighearted. DI AND VIV AND ROSE (3RD-26TH AUGUST) Three women are thrown together in their late teens. They are very different people but it isn’t long before they are living in each other’s pockets. Life is a blast and together they can do anything. And she loved the glassware: “Mine and Jenna’s glasses were so cute and pretty” The whole meal basically swept Brooke away: “My food was lovely. I left the cheese off my burger but it didn't stay on my plate long since dad took it. My chocolate milkshake and sticky toffee pudding were delicious!” On the atmosphere: “It was clean and tidy with a vintage feel. Jenna thought it was posh. The colourful bench chair was so pretty and colourful. The waitress was kind, nice and friendly. They have an area with kids toys too.” We’re impressed! n You can find Joe’s Kitchen at 3 Coney Street, York. To book in call: 01904 541941

The kids don't lie ... When Joe’s Kitchen and Bar invited us down to check out what they've got to offer, we decided to bring in the big guns… May we introduce you to our professional and exceptionally honest food critics.

Kids can be tricky customers right? Not for Joe’s Kitchen and Bar. Brooke and Jenna spoke highly of their trip to the family restaurant down Coney Street, but the devil is in the detail as our agents explain. Jenna was pleasantly surprised with the presentation of her food: “I thought the food would be on a plate, but it was on a tray. It looked good and I liked the tray: I want
(out of five...there was a scary mask)
mum to buy some.” “The food tasted nice and my mash was creamy. I didn't like the green beans though”, she added. Agent 001 also spoke highly of the interior design, service and atmosphere, with just one criticism: “It was really nice and I liked the fairy lights. Everything was clean, even the toilets. There are also games for all of the kids to play with. The waitress was very nice and we didn't have to wait very long. I liked the gingerbread man drawn on the chalk board but I could do one better.” Brooke found herself getting two for the price of one when she ordered: “I thought that there would be one burger but there was two. I was happy with this as I wouldn't have to struggle with eating one big one.”
