Bask in our warmth! August is always a bit hit and miss, here in dear old Blighty. Think of the two most depressing words in the English language. Jeremy Corbyn? No: it’s far worse than that. Namely Saving Money. As everyone knows, this is a very dreary activity. In my case, it has been brought on by moving into a crumbling money-pit of a house (should have spent money on a survey, I now realise). Fortunately, I have a friend in a similar predicament, so we can Save Money together. Hmm, I wonder. What can we do to ease our financial predicaments? There’s one obvious solution: throw away the Boden catalogues as soon as they arrive. That represents an instant saving for both of us. But then she has another idea: only buy clothes in the sales. If Hobbs dresses have 50% off, buying two constitutes an immense saving.

And so it is off to John Lewis at Monks Cross, where I find that I definitely need a goose-feather duvet (both necessary and in the clearance, so that’s money saved twice over). What’s more, I need a pepper mill, an iron (being fed up with my

Sellotaped one), and some tumble dryer balls. With those needs satisfied, I return home via Foss Islands, where I discover in Home Bargains that I need a whole variety of household items (from toothpaste to pan scourers to Pringles). However, they are all so cheap that I more or less didn’t buy them at all.

Feeling terribly pleased with myself for Not Spending Anything, I decide to spend Friday at the Wombells Auction preview. Because if you do buy anything at an auction, you do so in the knowledge that you can always sell it back. I think this is what’s known as a win-win situation. And, as we all know, everyone needs an ancient non-working black telephone, three boxes of crockery, various interesting-looking wooden items, two curtain poles, and a picture that will need an unconscionable amount of money spending on it. Another triumph for the Non-Spender, I think. What’s more, I also have a wardrobe to sell. So not only do I save money at Wombells, but I make money too.

I am a bit distressed to see that they are displaying said wonderful antique in the back room, along with old golf clubs and dead men’s drills. But I am optimistic that it will make my fortune.

Having thoroughly proved Ogden Nash wrong when he claimed that “a penny saved is impossible”, I save even more money by not having my squeaky car brakes looked at in the Raylor Centre. After all, I don’t really use the car much as riding a bike is completely free. Unless, that is, you have two cycling helmets stolen from outside the Minster in as many weeks, which makes it somewhat more expensive than driving.

That evening, I scour their website in anticipation, thinking of the goosefeather pillows I will now be able to buy to match my duvet. “Sold for £4”. Once I have paid the seller’s fee and minimum charge, I think that leaves me owing them £1.60. I knew I should have bid for the vintage calculating machine. Still, a trip to Wombells is a whole lot more fun than a world cruise and costs nowt, so I’m not complaining. Maybe I should plan a trip to hospital: free B&B, and no utility bills (another bore). Though given that I am yet again minus a cycling helmet, I ought perhaps to be careful what I wish for. There’s only one solution, really: a trip to Waitrose for a free coffee. But what’s this? A bill for £80 for a few vital groceries? Ah well. I shall ponder this while reading my free newspaper. Yet another £1.60 saved. My future career as Chancellor of the Exchequer starts now.

That way, if they want to drive, they can get in their own cars and share the love (the ones that can). Your other friends will see no need to get a driver’s licence as long as you're ferrying them around, so a little bit of tough love is needed here. It needs to get harder for everyone else, before it gets easier for you. My advice here is pretty straight forward: if you don't want to do it, don't do it. To salvage your guilty conscience, I would try to treat them to something a bit more low key before hand, such as a meal out. Make sure they know that you’re JUST friends and you're not looking of anything else. After the holiday, try and back out slowly. Called Prejudice and Pride, and celebrating 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality, the four day residency at the hall in October will see artist Tanya Raabe-Webber create live portraits of the sitters, while discussing what diversity means to them. An audience will also be present, creating their own artworks about the event, some of which will be incorporated into the final pieces. Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. THIS MONTH: MORRISON’S MASSIVE CHIMNEY Ask yourself this: why is the Hazel Court recycling centre where it is? You could ask that of anything in York, and sometimes you'll work out the answer, other times not. But the reason why City of York Council decided to put their waste and recycling centre where it is today was heavily influenced by William the Conqueror. No joke. Stick with us kids...

DAMN! Following the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and his coronation

in Westminster Abby, William – who we've never admitted to being fond of – continued to bring England under his control. He was very mean to York, which resisted and rebelled against Norman rule for years, and, as well as burning most of the city down, he built a couple of castles here to keep an eye on our ancestors. Those castles needed a moat. By damning the Foss near to what is now Clifford's Tower, William flooded an entire area of York. Known as the King's Fishpool, in was where today we have Foss Islands Road (and the reason why there are no city walls around there – they weren't needed due to the water). However, as great as that was for that fiend William, by the 19th century the fishpool was a stagnant smelly mess, with the bad odours being linked to the outbreak of cholera in 1832. And so it was decided that it should be filled. With rubbish.

WHAT RUBBISH! Again, no joke – the people of York were paid by the cartload for dumping their rubbish into the fishpool, so as to raise the ground level and get rid of the water. It worked, and both the River Foss and Tang Hall Beck had their courses corrected, resulting in the flow of water we have today. But people kept dumping their rubbish around there. To deal with all that rubbish, which, due to York's booming population in the Victorian period, was becoming increasingly unmanageable, the City Corporation built 'The Destructor'. No, not a half man-half cyborg warrior portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, but rather an incinerator... with a very tall chimney. Built in 1899 the Destructor was daily charged with burning all the city's rubbish, as well as being used to generate electricity to

power a generator – York's first stab at energy efficiency.

From the 1920s the Destructor stopped producing electricity (a power station was built next door to handle that) and was used solely for the burning of rubbish, with the area around it becoming the city's dump; a role the area played right up until the start of the 21st century. When Foss Islands Road was being developed into the retail centre it is today, the dump was moved to a site nearby – Hazel Court, just off James Street behind the new retail units. That way, people didn't really have to go any further than they had in the past to dump their rubbish – which we've been doing there for 200 years now.

Oh Baby! OPEN MIC WHERE: The Nook WHEN: Every Friday 8pm-11pm INFO: Cafe by day, live music, cocktail and local ale bar by night. The Nook is tiny but gorgeous. I stumbled upon it’s open mic night one drunken Friday, and had the best time. They’ve got some ace regulars and anyone who performs gets a free drink. Perfect place to go if you’re after a more chilled night out. You’ll find The Nook at 3a Castlegate.

Next month, studio manager, Zoe, is leaving work for the biggest job ever. She’s going to be a mum! I am quite frankly livid about this. The Ying to my Yang, the Ben to my Jerry’s, the calm to my ever disruptive storm, is leaving me. In times of stress and worry, Zoe always keeps her cool while I'm freaking out and swearing. She has an exceptional eye for detail and a diary that is kept in immaculate order. She makes lists of all the things she's going to do and ace’s them. We like to plan the magazines as a duo, because if something goes wrong, at least we will be in trouble together. When I need reassurance or someone to listen to me whinge (and trust me, I whinge like heck) she is always there, and always on my side. She knows all about my friends and

family and I know all about hers. I know that her go-to safe lunch is an egg and ham salad, (The Co Op discontinued it, she was gutted,) with a carrot cake and Diet Dr Pepper.

“She’s going to be a mum! I am quite frankly livid about this.” She hates grime music, loves heavy metal and this will be the first year in forever that she hasn’t been to a festival. She bulk buys her cleaning products for her house, and has a dog that get’s

more haircuts than her entire family combined. We love Eva (the dog) she's super cuddly, loves humans, comes in every Friday and nicks our chairs and barks to let us know when someone is at the door, super handy, 10/10 good dog. Without Zo, I'm not sure exactly what I’m going to do for the next twelve months of her maternity; we’ve become a great duo, and I will miss her terribly. But I do know from working by her side for the past couple of years, that she's going to be a kick-ass mum with the kindest heart and the best organisational skills of all time, ever. I mean she’s had to look after me like a child for the past two years anyway, which is great practice in itself.

#orange ‘Rose gold hair is trendy’ I thought to myself strolling down the aisle of a well known highstreet shop, allured by the false promise of perfect hair dos in the home box dye department. I imagine my trail of thought was something like: ‘Yes, this pink hair dye will make me look sassy and fabulous. No I won’t check to see if it’s FULL OF BLEACH and going to RUIN my hair before I put it on, because I am a chuffing IDIOT.’ What was once a plethora of blonde highlights has become a patchy, orangey, mess mixed with a touch of pink. This look, I could have definitely rocked when I was 14. Paramore wannabe anyone? But, here I am: 23, full time job, car, bills and still making stupid decisions. I have made this mistake well over five times now since I started being

in control of my own hair, and to be honest, I wish my mum was still in charge because It would look way better right now. Up until this weekend, I was three years clean of hitting up the old home hair dye kits. But for some damn reason I just cannot stay away. To my fabulous hairdresser, if you’re reading this: You restored my hair to it’s former glory through regular cuts and carefully placed highlights. I’m sorry to have just undone three years of great hairdressing, but it’s all over now. I’ve done it again and I am dead embarrassed. So if anyone wants my advice: step away from the home hair dye kits (especially one’s with pre-lightner.) Call up your hairdresser, tell them you love them, and that you’re ready for your next colour.

“We need to stop interrupting what people are interested in and be what people are interested in” Craig Davis, former Chief Creative Officer at J. Walter Thompson. Imagine you run a cake shop. You, and perhaps only you, know which of your cakes sell best. Suppose it’s your Bakewell Tart. The market has judged all your cakes against competitors (other cakes, other sweet things, other things people could do with their money) and decided that your Bakewell Tarts offer the best ‘value’: perhaps the nicest sweet taste per penny spent. Why do you think that is? Is there a story behind your recipe? Is there an emotional side to that story? What’s your real purpose and how does your Bakewell Tart help you achieve that? What’s the change you want in the world? Are you trying to make the best cake? Are you trying to provide cake for all? Maybe you are the community cake shop, part of all the important celebrations. The answer determines how you market yourself.

When someone walks into your cake shop, they don’t know which is your best seller unless you make it clear. If you do, you are sharing community information for the benefit of your customers. What else do you know that would help your customers? Is there seasonality? (Yes, people lose interest around Christmas time (other than Christmas cake) and over midsummer.) Are ground almonds better at certain times of year? Can you offer ‘freezer packs’ so people can buy lots. What about cake club? How about asking for people’s improvement suggestions or ideas? Set up cake delivery (I heard ‘desserts’ is the fastest growing sector in Just Eat), deliver it using an old ambulance as ‘emergency cake’. How about we have fun with a video taste test or competition?

What are other bakers doing? What are the cake trends? (Vibrant green cake is a 2017 trend, I see.) Which 20% of your cakes bring in 80% of your profit? Why not stop baking the 80% of cakes that don’t really sell (and then encourage a protest group to protect your endangered cherry and marzipan cake).

If bakewells are your gateway cake, where are you taking people? What other cakes are popular, let’s get people to try those. Who’s in your community .. how about cooking Polish cakes or gluten free? What are your customers saying about you? Are you collecting reviews?

Water causes car to catch fire Normally water is used to put out a fire, but in this particular case, it caused it. When a Mercedes got caught in a sudden flash flood in the Ross Township of Pennsylvania, the driver and passengers climbed out and paddled to safety. Obviously they thought their car would be safe, if a little damp, and waited for the flood waters to subside. But then their car burst into flames, despite being soaked through. The moment was caught on a passer-by’s phone, but investigators believe the water caused an electrical short which created a small spark. That spark must’ve found its way to some flammable material, and the rest is... well charred and ruined. Our writer Howard is planning on using this story as an excuse to never again wash the family car. You can’t be too careful...

Ah, China. If you're not worrying world leaders with your island building in the South China Seas, you're keeping us all entertained with your bonkers ways. Captured by a convenience store's CCTV in Zhenjiang, China, is the footage of a car being casually driven through the open doors of the store to pull up inside. The cashier rushed over to the car, thinking there to be some kind of emergency, only to find that the driver just wanted to buy a few items and didn't want to get out of his car due to the rain. Surprisingly, the cashier dashes about to collect the driver's shopping, before taking the cash and helping him to back out of the door. He even waved goodbye. We're not sure who was acting the most ridiculous; the driver or the cashier. We're pretty sure that, if we worked in a store into which someone drove their damn car, we'd be more than alarmed.

Oi, cancer! NO! Cancer doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in Hell in this city. That is because we have one of the most dedicated and hard-working charities in the country battling the disease every day, with research, education, and care. York Against Cancer this year celebrates 30 wonderful years of fighting a disease that touches so many people’s lives, and we join them by dedicating this special feature to the charity’s incredible achievements past, present and future. In 1987... … two surgeons, John Craven and Steve Leveson, thought that the facilities and care for cancer patients in York could be improved. The two doctors wanted to increase the level of care given to cancer patients, start to raise funds and awareness about cancer, and also pioneer research into cancer cures. Along with research scientist Colin Garner, they decided to do just that, and York Against Cancer was born. The former Mayor and local businessman, Jack Birch, accepted the role of the charity's first chairman, and YAC began working alongside York Teaching Hospital and also the University of York. There, the Jack Birch Unit of Molecular Carcinogenesis was established, where specialist research could be carried out to create cures and treatments for various forms of cancer. Meanwhile, fund raising drives were organised, education programmes were created alongside local schools, and volunteers were recruited. In three decades charity has helped thousands of people in their battle against cancer, saving many lives as a direct result of equipment bought and cures discovered. Also, the regular bus service through to Leeds Hospital has meant receiving treatment has been made easier for many more people. It's safe to say that, because of York Against Cancer's mere existence, our city is a happier, healthier place to live.

They need you It's true. They only way YAC can continue to function is if you get involved. Sure, the easiest way to help is to make a donation, but if you'd like get involved in a greater way, and make some great new friends while you're at it, you should sign up as a volunteer. There are so many volunteering opportunities with York Against Cancer, so no matter what your skills are, there is bound to be something for you do. YAC's volunteers take part in a mix of important jobs, events, tasks, and crazy fun - all of which helps to raise those vital funds. Very APPEAL-ing For their 30th anniversary year York Against Cancer are having a massive push for one very important appeal – one that will change the lives of thousands of people. Can you help? If you need cancer treatment and you live in central York, YAC's regular bus trips over to Leeds make it quick, easy, and free. However, for those living with cancer in areas far out of the city, such as Scarborough, Malton, and Bridlington, getting over to Leeds can be costly and inconvenient. So here's a thought: what if the treatment came to them? That is the thinking behind York Against Cancer's latest initiative, to buy new mobile chemotherapy unit to bring treatment closer to home for rural patients. Once up and running this summer, it will cost almost £1000 to keep it on the road each day, delivering chemotherapy to people who desperately need it.

Hitting the road The £700,000 mobile treatment unit is the

Streamlined No, not news of staff cutbacks within the charity, but rather some great news for the hat industry. People go to all kinds of different lengths to help YAC, but the marketing and events manger of York Mansion House, Anne Platt, worked out how she could raise thousands of pounds by sitting in a chair for a few minutes. Anne had all her hair shaved completely off for the charity, and managed to raise a whopping £4000! Anne lost her mum to cancer last year, and was herself diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in the year.

Instead of losing her hair to chemotherapy, Anne took matters into her own hands... and what a job she did. Well done to her!

How far? If someone said they wanted you to join in with a sponsored cycle ride to raise funds for charity, you’d probably assume they meant to Castle Howard and back, right? Well, the York Pedallers, a group of local cyclists, decided to step up their fund raising efforts by several notches... and biked all the way to Paris. You know, that city in France! As we've already pointed out, York Against Cancer just wouldn't be able to function without the massive team of volunteers working tirelessly behind, and in front of, the scenes. But if you've ever wondered how good those volunteers are, just ask the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Barry Dodd CBE. In September he'll be awarding the charity the country's most prestigious recognition for volunteers, the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, in which a crystal dome and certificate signed by the Queen will be handed over. York Against Cancer’s general manager, Julie Russell, visited Buckingham Palace as part of the Queen’s Award, saying “It’s particularly fitting that the award has come in this, our 30th anniversary year, because it is the selflessness and dedication of our volunteers that has made us the success that we are today.” If you fancy getting involved yourself,

Saving lives already You might expect to wait a while to see the direct results of a new piece of medical technology, but not so with York Against Cancer's latest investment. A Dermatoscope funded by the charity was able to identify suspected skin cancer just days after being given to a local GP. He was able to snap an image of a patients's mole, which had recently changed shape, and immediately forwarded it to a dermatologist who diagnosed cancer. Treatment began straight away, and the patient's prognosis seems excellent. York Against Cancer provided £26,000 to purchase 37 Dermatoscopes for local GP practices, and its great to see that they are already being used in the best possible way. Dr Dan Cottingham, GP MacMillan Cancer Lead for NHS Vale of York Clinical

Commissioning Group, said: “The use of this technology, allowing specialised photographs to be sent electronically to the local dermatologists, has enabled the swift diagnosis of a worrying skin problem.” Meanwhile, YAC's Chairman, Professor Steve Leveson, said: “It is really great that York Against Cancer can be involved in such a useful project based in primary care. Skin cancers are the most common cancer in this country. I am sure that the use of dermatoscopes will save many unnecessary referrals and will speed up access in the appropriate cases. It will produce a significant cost saving to the NHS.” So if you notice a change in a mole, or indeed anything unusual on your skin, thanks to the new Dermatoscopes your GP might have answers for you sooner than you think.

The answer? Don't let them fall in there. If you have a raised pond, you should be okay, but look out for overhanging branches and trim those back. For traditional ponds a net that covers the surface is advisable, but be sure to get your net in place early enough to catch them all, Also, keep checking it so the middle doesn't droop into the water and the caught leaves go soggy. If you don’t want to cover your pond, get the fishing net out to scoop up leaves while they are floating. If it is too late for that then the sludge and leaves can be removed with a pond vacuum before they do any damage. Either way, keep a sharp eye out, and you'll save yourself a lot of bother next Spring. n For advice call 698801.

Also I think Fuchsias are a great addition to the garden or show bench due to the fact they are easy to grow and can be grown in a variety of styles (eg. Shrub, Standard, Pyramid, Hanging Baskets, and Espalier). To create a Fuchsia bush that will give you great colour all season long, you will need to: STRIKE A CUTTING – This means putting the end of the cutting into a rooting power, then into a growing medium. When roots have developed the cutting has ‘struck’.

The beauty of growing Fuchsias is that there is such a large expanse of colour and flower shape, ranging from Singles, Semi-Doubles and Doubles.

POTTING UP – The term Potting Up means you take the cutting which has ‘struck’ and pot it into its first pot, allowing the plant to continue root development and nutritional intake in order to grow healthily. STOPPING OR PINCHING OUT – In order to create an even bush, once the cutting has reached the desired height, you simply ‘pinch out’ the growing tip back to the next set of leaf nodes. These in turn become the new growing tips, each time this is done you are doubling the growing tips, making your plant bushy and creating more branches in which flowers will come from, thus giving you a better show in the summer months. FEEDING – Fuchsias definitely benefit from supplement feeding, but

which one do you use? Cuttings or plants which have just been potted up into new compost should have sufficient feed from that compost to last around five to six weeks. It is after this period that you will need to feed. A general rule of thumb is to use a high Nitrogen feed early in the season; this will make the Fuchsia put on plenty of leafy growth early on, allowing you to create a network of branches as explained in the Pinching Out stage. Once achieved, it is best to move onto an equal strength Fertiliser, as this will keep the plant looking healthy whilst helping also to promote flowers. A high Potash Fertiliser can be used as it will enhance flower colour and performance, but it also ripens or hardens the wood (if growing varieties that need over-wintering, this will make it more difficult to get

them to grow in their second year, as the Potash hardens the wood so much). PREPARING FOR WINTER – Greenhouse or outdoor varieties are usually treated the same (other than the heat element). Once the cold weather arrives, you should notice the leaves begin to fall; this is when you should bring indoor varieties into the greenhouse. Once inside I would remove all the leaves by hand, as this will help prevent fungal disease. The same applies for outside varieties, although it is not as crucial. Do not prune until the next spring, when you can see where the plant is growing from, as you may find you get some die back. Therefore the more plant you have above ground level the better, over the winter months, as the ends will absorb the worst of the cold weather.

I've noticed that my tomato plants leaves are flagging. Is this a shortage of water, and what can I do to stop this happening?

Water is necessary for the growth of all plants, both as an essential chemical in its own right, and also as the solvent within which other nutrients are dissolved.Its shortage in the soil, or sometimes in the air, can result in conspicuous damage and ultimately the death of plants with large, smooth leaves. Vegetable plants are particularly prone to damage from this shortage. Shortage of soil water may result from lack of rainfall or poor water retention by the soil, while a dry atmosphere can be caused by low humidity, wind, or high temperature. This then causes desiccation in the plant because it loses through its its leaves more water than it is able to replace through the roots. Therefore wilting occurs. A common symptom on tomatoes and capsicum peppers is blossom end rot, a problem caused by an imbalance of calcium within the plant, which is very often brought about by water shortage. A dark-coloured sunken area arises at the blossom end of the fruit. With dry air, the symptoms are similar to those induced by soil drought, but the browning or scorching of the leaves is the prevalent symptom.

Maintain adequate, but not excessive, watering of plants at all times. Take particular care at the time of flowering and when the fruit are forming, and pay special attention to tomatoes or other plants in growing bags as the compost can easily dry out. Dry air and its effects cannot be avoided outdoors, but in greenhouses, spray plants such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and vines at flowering time with water in the morning or evening to aid pollination, and feed fortnightly with a high potassium fertilizer.

Moist soils with high organic content support large populations of slugs, so some relief is given by cultivating frequently and thoroughly to expose eggs, young, and adults to predators and weather. In addition, they may be trapped by laying old lettuce or cabbage leaves, grapefruit skins, old sacking, and other material on soil surfaces on warm, humid evenings. Once caught, kill slugs by dropping them into a strong salt solution or very hot water.

Alternatively, sinking shallow dishes into the soil and fill with beer. The beer attracts the slugs, intoxicates them and then they fall in and drown. Beer remains, effective for two to three nights but you could also use slug pellets, although read the instructions carefully as some can be harmful to pets and hedgehogs. Personally, I wouldn't waste good beer on slugs! Still, best of luck.

The weather recently has been ideal for slugs and snails, as they thrive in damp, warm, and humid conditions. The effects of many species of slugs and snails are similar since they all feed by rasping plant tissues with a toothed tongue. Irregular holes are eaten in roots, bulbs, tubers, stems, leaves, buds, flowers, and fruits. Most feed at night, with slime trails revealing their nocturnal activity. Damage to plants is generally most severe during warm, humid periods in spring and autumn. Tubers of potatoes are extensively damaged by subterranean slugs.

This looks to be a vintage year for plums. After several years of modest pickings, most of my trees are carrying good crops. The heaviest cropping tree by far, out in wilds of the field orchard rather than the sheltered garden, is the Victoria plum. As I write it is laden with fruit. Barring disasters such as monsoon rain or gales or, more likely, broken branches caused by the weight of the crop, late August and early September promise a bumper harvest. The Victoria is Britain’s best known plum and old trees can still be found in many gardens. While the exact origin of the variety is unclear, as the name suggests it dates from the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign. Young trees can still be bought from nurseries today but there are also newer similar varieties such as Avalon and Jubilee. I have the latter and find it a slightly more reliable cropper and less trouble prone than Victoria.

Victoria plums are not my favourite flavour wise. For fresh eating gages have are far more tasty and there are quite a few varieties that cook just as well if not better. Victoria’s virtue is that it is dual purpose, suitable for both cooking and eating. If you’re used to the hard and tasteless plums sold in shops all through the year, Victoria plums, whether fresh or cooked, will be a revelation. For eating make sure a Victoria is fully ripe. The skin should be dark red to purple in colour and soft when bitten. This year’s bumper Victoria crop is probably the result of the very mild spring. Like most plums Victoria is very susceptible to frost damage at blossom time. Some years a sharp frost in early April can wipe out most of the crop. Unfortunately, Victoria is also prone to a number of other problems. Of all the common plum types it’s probably the most affected by silver leaf. This is a fungus which causes leaves on infected areas to develop a silvery sheen. Whole branches and even the entire tree can die. To reduce the risk of infection minimise pruning, especially in winter.

Perhaps the other main problem is plum moth which seems to have become more prevalent in recent years. Damage is caused by adult moths laying eggs which hatch and mine the developing fruit. It’s often not until a plum is cut for cooking, or worse still bitten into fresh, that the presence of the maggot is discovered. I find that moth damage causes affected fruits to ripen early so it’s probably best to be especially wary of those tempting first ripe plums and take a precautionary nibble rather than a big bite. While we’re discussing dangers, watch out for wasps! Ripe plums are a magnet to wasps and it’s not without reason that one of my uncles used to disparagingly refer to his Victoria plum as ‘just an old jasper tree’. But don’t let me put you off. Victoria, as with all plums, may have its fair share of snags, but in a good year such as this a tree laden with its ripening reddish purple fruit is one of the great treats of the late summer garden.

CAMPING FOR INTROVERTS Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.

I'm an introvert. This I declare proudly. You see, introversion and extroversion have nothing to do with confidence, as some mistakenly believe. The difference – and this will aid in your own self-classification – is whether or not a person is either drained or uplifted by other humans. Does spending time with other people make you feel mentally and physically exhausted, or do you feel invigorated and energised in the company of others?

I get drained, more than you'd believe possible for a normal functioning adult, to the point where, after social situations, I HAVE TO get away and be alone. At uni my friends would speak of two Howards: the one at the beginning of the night filled with vim and vigour, encouraging everyone to scale the city walls whilst drunk, and the other who would sit blankly, silently waiting for an appropriate moment to leave. I once mapped my social enthusiasm on a graph, but then immediately tore up it because that was a weird thing to do.

POINTERS Don't get me wrong – these are nice people that I know quite well. There were no new people there to ask me questions that fluster me like, “How are you?” and “Can I help you put that tent up?”. But still, being unable to retreat, even at night when the adults gathered by the cooling gas stove to chat, made me a tad anxious. There's only so many times you can “pop to the toilet” before people become suspicious.

“THAT WAS A WEIRD THING TO DO”. And so, to help other similarly afflicted introverts who might be camping in a group, I complied a list of things that helped me deal with the weekend. Some more feasible than others. • Pitch your tent last. If you put up your tent first, others will have a tendency to pitch theirs close to you, as is custom in our tribal society. If you're last, you can pitch it further

out, creating a bit of breathing space 'twixt you and the others. • Fake an illness. No, not hepatitis B or something, but more like a dicky tummy. That way people won't think its weird that you went to bed at 8pm, or that you're sitting silently, mentally naming star constellations.

• Take a drone. I recommend taking a drone everywhere (except the field next to an airport), and doing so on a camping trip will give you a great excuse to bugger off for a bit. The kids will follow you, to watch you fly, but that's okay. WARNING: Don't take a drone if you're camping with another adult who also likes drones. • Wear colour-coded hats. You could take both a green hat and red hat, and hand out a laminated instruction sheet to all other campers. It should say: If hat green – okay to chat. If hat red – please no chat. My wife once banned me from handing out business cards that read: I'm not being rude, I just wish you would all go away.' Hope those help. I actually really enjoy camping, especially because the kids seem to thrive in the outdoors, and – so far, at least – in the company of friends. If any of this strikes a chord, and you feel you might be as introverted as I am, I really don't care.

I liked the gingerbread man drawn on the chalk board but I could do one better.” Brooke found herself getting two for the price of one when she ordered: “I thought that there would be one burger but there was two. I was happy with this as I wouldn't have to struggle with eating one big one.”
