Your Family And You
CHOOSING THE RIGHT CHILDCARE
Whether you’re a new parent heading back to work or you’re looking to change your little one’s nursery, now is the time to grab a place for your child’s daycare. As children go up to primary school and pre-school, spaces are likely to become available in September. With so many brilliant options across York, we know that picking the right nursery for you and your little one can sometimes be a mammoth task. So, to try and help make things a little easier, we’ve put together a guide of factors you will want to consider when making that all-important decision.

1. Location
This might sound like an obvious one, but there are many things to consider when it comes to the location of your child’s nursery. How long will it take you to get there, and back? Will there be traffic? Could you look further along your commuting route? And if other people will be helping with drop-offs and pickups, is it easy for them to get there too?
2. Dietary Requirements
Your little ones will need feeding while they’re having fun with their new friends. But do they have any dietary requirements? If you’re choosing to feed your son or daughter on a specific diet, or have preferences as to what they do and don’t eat, then this is something to consider. Many nurseries offer amazing dishes for kids now. We heard one lucky young man had Moroccan lamb with couscous last week - gone are the days of a cheese sandwich and a bag of crisps!
3. Reviews
Looking online for reviews and getting to hear parents' honest opinions will give you peace of mind when choosing a nursery or childminder. Of course, Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education) will have completed an inspection at some point, too.
4. First Impressions
Sometimes, first impressions really do count. You might ‘just know’ that you’ve found the perfect wedding dress. You could view a house that ticks all the boxes and nothing else compares. You’ll naturally only want the best for your child – so check out the nursery for yourself and make sure it’s the one.
5. Policies
There are lots of little things to consider here: opening and closing times; how they deal with emergencies; how flexible they are; sickness policies, and the list goes on. Starting nursery is a nerve-wracking yet exciting time for both parent and child, and begins a new chapter in your lives – and here at Your Local Link, we wish you all the best! Young Discoverers is inviting parents and guardians to their open day on 10th July from 10am-5pm.

MOSSDALE RESIDENCE, YORK’S PREMIER CARE HOME IS WELCOMING NEW RESIDENTS Providing the kindest possible care and a very good life for elderly people
We’re delighted to announce that Mossdale Residence, our state-of-the-art care home, is welcoming new Residents.
Mossdale Residence is able to meet individuals’ wide ranging, changing needs and give them a home for life, with personalised residential, memory care and nursing care packages. Our coronavirus prevention and protection plan has been designed to offer new Residents the safest and kindest possible way to start their new life, whether it’s for a short-term care break or a long-term stay. Please call Victoria Edwards, Home Manager, to find out how you can become part of the Mossdale Residence community.
A local care home is pulling out all of the stops to lift residents’ spirits and raise funds for Dementia UK. New Lodge Care Home and Extra Care Apartments is hosting its first-ever ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ show for residents on July 9 and raising funds for Dementia UK at the same time. The care home is also encouraging Your Local Link readers to make their own donations to the same charity. Care homes and extra care staff faced huge challenges during the lockdown. Keeping residents safe from Covid was only the start. Less well known was their work to maintain the wellbeing of those who could no longer receive visits from friends and loved ones. Staff at the New Lodge Care Home and Extra Care Apartments in New Earswick rose to the challenge. The Extra Care team invented ‘doorstep drops’, where staff (safely) visited residents isolated in their apartments. The most popular of these was the New Lodge Trolley, featuring everything from afternoon teas and homemade cakes to ice cream sundaes and nutritious soups. At the Care Home during Christmas 2020, nearly every member of staff, from part-time casual workers to members of the management team, took part in a special pantomime (pictured).
SMILE, YOU’RE ON CAMERA!
A new photography business in York is already gaining happy customers after opening up at the end of the last lockdown. Charlotte Harvey Photography specialises in family and newborn photoshoots, capturing special moments forever. Charlotte had been working towards starting her own business for a long time. After losing her long term partner to cancer, she decided to live life to the fullest and work towards doing what she truly enjoys. Charlotte puts the success of her family photography business down to support from some of her brilliant photographer friends, her partner, David and their four children. It’s easy to succeed when you love what you do: "My favourite part is seeing clients being happy in front of the camera and their reaction to the images when they see them for the first time. It makes me feel happy that I’ve been able to give them memories.” Explains Charlotte. And the reviews on social media speak volumes: “Thank you, Charlotte Harvey Photography. You did an amazing job and it is really easy working with you. Thank you for your patience with the girls and for creating unforgettable memories. We will definitely be coming back again, and I will recommend you to as many people as I possibly can.” If you would like to see more of Charlotte’s work or book in for a family photoshoot, visit her page on Facebook by searching Charlotte Harvey Photography.

THUMBS HEMMINGWAY
After living in a house with 40+ other cats, Thumbs Hemingway is finding adjusting to adoption centre life quite difficult. For the first few days, he practically refused to look at anyone, hiding away and displaying all the behaviours of a very unhappy cat. After a trip to the vets, he seemed to find his voice and some confidence. While he still likes to have a grumble, he seems more settled even though it’s clear that he’s stressed. Thumbs will need a quiet home, with no other pets, where he can take the time to find his feet without being pressured. We’re not sure how he will cope initially, but we think that a home environment will be easier for him to adjust to than the strange sights and smells of the adoption centre. If you can give this lovely boy the time he needs to adjust and show his personality then you might be the perfect candidates to take him into your home and your heart.
JONATHON SUPERSOCKS
This slightly worried looking chap is Jonathon Supersocks and he is finding his transition from home to the Adoption Centre a bit scary. This is hardly surprising as he was living in a multi-cat household where he was having to compete for space, food, attention and all the other essentials that a cat needs. Now he has come to a new place where everything smells and looks different and the poor lad is completely bewildered by it all! Having said all that he is slowly getting used to us and his new surroundings and taking baby (or kitten) steps we are convinced that he will eventually feel safe enough to appreciate all that a new home could offer him. Jonathon will also need a calm pet free home to start the next chapter in his life.
