FOREWORD It was an honour when Diss was selected to be a Cittaslow town, embracing the quality of life issues that began with a slow food movement in Italy. It is still one of only a handful of towns with Cittaslow status. But Diss is no stranger to honours, with the Corn Hall and museum both winning awards in recent years. The Heritage Triangle, taking in the area generally including the Corn Hall, church and museum, is being regenerated as a visitor destination to bring life back to that part of the town and arrest the drift towards the south. The supermarkets bring people into the town; the Heritage Triangle could draw them to the north. It contains a higher concentration of listed buildings than almost any other town in the country. The turn-out of people for the Christmas lights, for the carnival, Proms in the Park and the visit of the Royal Anglian Regiment show that there is life and interest in the town. The Diss Town Guide, one of the most comprehensive in the country and the 22nd edition in its present form, is part of the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success. Again it tries to reflect the diversity of the place and give an impression of what it is like to be here, as well as being an indispensable compendium of local information. Local history articles are included, showing the quirks of life in the 19th century, while every local service, school, church, club and society is mentioned, with brief descriptions and contact details. HISTORY Glimpses of 1832 Among Diss Museum’s old newspapers is almost a year’s collection of the weekly Suffolk Chronicle of 1832. They contain national and international, as well as local and regional, news. They are from pre-Victorian England, the reign of William IV. It was the year of the Reform Bill, with Sir Robert Walpole and Lord John Russell quoted addressing parliament. The 20 year old Charles Dickens would have been among the shorthand writers in the gallery. Cholera and typhus stalked the land. Gruesome murders and accidents are reported. Transportation was the establishment’s favoured punishment. Robert Hughes’ book The Fatal Shore shows that this was the nearest thing to hell on earth. Men and women of 17 or younger received 14 year transportation sentences, or even life, for stealing a sheep, some harness, oats or barley. The man who stole a pig and got 12 months hard labour in an English prison must have sighed with relief. A Marine was sentenced to be hanged at the yard-arm for striking a Serjeant and being insolent to an Officer.

INTRODUCTION A Private in the Coldstream Guards received 300 lashes for insubordination and threatening language. A simple-minded man threw a stone, hit the king on the head and was charged with high treason. He was sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered – later commuted to transportation for life. Public hangings were still common, watched by crowds and described down to the last twitch and convulsion. Diss had not such a hanging since 1742. Fast sailing ships offered a new life in America or Canada, if you could afford the £5 ticket. The Diss correspondent was not overworked. His contributions included the time someone fell in the Mere and got out again; and when a horse galloped through a cottage window. A man in Yarmouth had more excitement when he put his pipe into a pocket in which he had placed some gunpowder... A farm fire at Winfarthing was tackled by the Diss engine; but the firemen found that a new India rubber pipe had been ‘so much injured by some malicious person as to become useless’. The Phenomena Day Coach passed through Diss on its 13 hour journey from London to Norwich. The sale of wives, the subject of Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge, was not just a fiction. The newspapers describe several instances of this. The passing of the Reform Bill, by which we eventually got the right to vote, was hailed as a great victory. Some towns (no mention of Diss) had Reform Festivals and dinners. The newspaper was radical and spoke out against tithes, against the ludicrous treason trial and corruption in the elections following the Reform Act. What an amazing glimpse into the England of over 180 years ago.

INTRODUCTION

The Ice Carnivals of 1891 The winter of 1891 saw temperatures as low as they had been for 200 years. The Mere froze to a depth of seven inches or more. On 5th January there was a skating carnival, so successful that it was decided to have another on Saturday 10th January “to relieve the distressed poor of the parish”. “During the morning the approaches to the Mere were made gay with bunting and the town was made to assume a holiday-like aspect, this being increased as visitors, most of whom carried skates, kept arriving by rail and road.” Cleer Alger, junior, the photographer, was there to capture images of people in costumes “of a most grotesque and amusing description”. The programme gives names and costumes, showing well-known local families, including: Bobby, Alger, Aldrich, Bryant, Gaze, Gostling, Madgett. There was a Red Indian, a pirate, Buffalo Bill, a Zulu, Grace Darling and many others. By permission of Capt. F. Taylor MP, the band of B Company, 4th VBNR played on a bandstand in the middle of the Mere, where Chinese lanterns and flags were hung. It was estimated that 5,000 people were present, counting skaters and spectators. Skaters paid one penny, which went towards the poor fund. A pony-drawn sleigh gave rides around the ice, while a refreshment stall did good trade. A large number of unemployed men kept the ice swept. At dusk a fire balloon was sent up, sending out brilliant lights to illuminate the scene. Charity collectors, including the Manning girls from the rectory, wore a distinguishing sash. The collection amounted to over £20, a large sum in those days when there were 240 pence in a pound, and went to provide coal for the poor.

LOCAL CONTENTS SERVICES EDUCATION Diss Town Council Diss Town Council is the most local tier of Local Government which provides services for the residents of Diss and surrounding areas, with a catchment area population of between 20,000 – 50,000. Diss is a thriving market town with a bustling market every Friday, Saturday Markets and a Farmers’ Market on the second Saturday in the month. It also has an auction house and a unique selection of independent shops in our hidden shopping courtyards – all complemented by our unique Mere, a six acre lake in the centre of the town, bordered by the Park. The Town Council is made up of thirteen elected members, which is led by the Town Mayor and administered by the Town Clerk. The Town Council meets in the Council Chamber at the Corn Hall on the third Wednesday every two months. It operates a number of committees to oversee its many responsibilities. One of the Town Council’s roles is to lobby the District Council, County Council and central Government to endeavour to achieve a high level of service from these authorities relevant to the needs of local people. It has responsibility for the majority of public spaces in the town, including the Park, the Mere, the Market Place, the Cemetery, St. Mary’s Churchyard, Rectory Meadow and the Sports Ground. The Town Council owns Diss Corn Hall which is now leased to the Corn Hall Trust which has embarked on a regeneration project to upgrade the facilities to make the historic building into an important arts and entertainments centre for South Norfolk. In 2011 Diss Town Council purchased the Youth Resource Base building in Shelfanger Road from Norfolk County Council and it is now managed and run by a Steering Group and the Town Council. Renamed as The Diss Youth and Community Centre it provides weekly Youth Club sessions and is available for hire by community groups, businesses and private individuals. Diss Town Council is accredited as a Quality Town Council. This demonstrates that the Town Council is considered to be professionally run and managed and increases its profile with the higher tier authorities. As a Quality Council Diss could take on additional responsibilities if it is considered that this will be of benefit to the town.

South Norfolk Council South Norfolk is a growing district with an ambitious district council and a hard-working people to match. It is home to world-class concerns and business sites like the Norwich Research Park, Group Lotus, Hethel Engineering Centre, the University of East Anglia and one of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top-performing hospitals - the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Trust. Frenze Beck

Frenze Beck is a superb habitat for some of South Norfolkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most important species and can be found on the western bank of the River Frenze on the outskirts of Diss. The 1.5 hectares of reedbeds and ponds, with broadleaf trees, hedgerows and scrub zones was created in 2003 and is managed by South Norfolk Council. Boardwalks, bridges and viewing screens make it easy for visitors to catch glimpses of the many species attracted to the site, including Barn Owls, Reed Warblers, otters and field voles. During the summer many dragonflies can be seen darting around the pond catching small insects. This beautiful wetland paradise is popular with families, school children and visitors and provides the perfect environment to see a wide range of wildlife in its natural surroundings.

EMERGENCY SERVICES Diss Ambulance Service The Ambulance Service is based in Owen Road on the Vinces Road Industrial Estate. It is manned 24 hours a day on a rota system. The managers head a team of highly skilled personnel, including ambulance paramedics and

LOCAL CONTENTS SERVICES EDUCATION technicians, who serve an area of about 465 square miles in South Norfolk and North Suffolk. It is equipped with first line and rapid response vehicles, kitted out with the latest resuscitation instruments, as well as two Patient Transport Service ambulances. The East of England Ambulance NHS Trust, of which Diss is a part, has headquarters at Hellesdon, Norwich, where control co-ordinates requests from patients, doctors and others who have emergency requirements. Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service (Diss) Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service is divided into four areas, Southern, Eastern, Western and Central. These areas are then sub-divided into smaller clusters of which Diss is part of cluster S4 in the Southern area. The Station Manager is Paul Seaman who is based at Thetford Fire Station (Southern HQ). Diss Fire Station is in Park Road and has an establishment of 20 retained personnel. The Officer in charge is Watch Manager Karl Hain who is supported by four Crew Managers and 15 fire-fighters. Training takes place every Wednesday evening and at any other time deemed necessary. Retained personnel have a primary employment elsewhere but are highly trained and carry a pager by which they are alerted and report to the station within minutes. The average turnout time is between two and four minutes. Diss attends on average 200 calls a year. Based at the station are two fire engines. These are a Water Tender Ladder and a Rescue Pump. The Rescue Pump carries similar equipment to the Water Tender Ladder for dealing with fires, flooding and hazardous materials incidents but carries more specialised equipment for dealing with Road Traffic Collisions. Diss is also a core station in Norfolk involved in the National Resilience program put together by the Government after the 9/11 attacks in New York. In the event of a major terrorist CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) attack on the country, the Incident Response Unit from Hethersett along with the core stations could be mobilised to any part of the country for the purpose of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Mass Decontaminationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of the general public. Attached to the station are the Diss Fire Cadets aged from 13 to 18. They meet every Tuesday for training and also take part in community activities. The cadet leaders are fire-fighters Paul Leeder and Rob Powell. If you are interested in joining the retained service or cadets, just pop along

Diss Police Station The Public Enquiry Office is open Monday-Friday 9.00 am to 5.00pm. It is closed during lunch between 1.00 & 2.00pm. Outside the opening hours of the Public Enquiry Office there are police officers on patrol across the neighbourhood. Please use the external telephone at the police station. Diss has 24/7 police cover with SNT Patrol Officers working closely with the Safe Neighbourhood Team (SNT) to tackle crime. The SNT deals with local crime and works in partnership with communities and other agencies to understand and address local problems. Inspector Alice Scott, leads South Norfolk SNTs which includes Diss, Long Stratton & Harleston. Her dedicated team of officers encompasses five Sergeants, 22 SNT Patrol Officers, three Beat Managers ( one for Diss- PC James Stables, one for Long Stratton & one for Harleston) and 4 Police Community Support Officers based in Diss. The Diss SNT is responsible for Diss and the surrounding villages of Bressingham, Tivetshall St Mary, Tivetshall St Margaret, Winfarthing, Dickleburgh, Rushall, Scole, Roydon, Billingford, Burston and Fersfield. Cittaslow Diss Cittaslow (Slow City or town), formed in Italy in 1999, has its origins in the Slow Food movement which was formed to counteract fast food restaurants. Cittaslow aims to preserve and enhance the traditional sustainable way of life and the unique character of market towns. It has spread world wide to over 150 towns in over 25 countries. Following Aylsham, in March 2006 Diss was awarded Cittaslow status by the Board of Cittaslow UK. Diss Cittaslow is managed by the Diss Community Partnership with the support of the Tourism and Leisure committee, of Diss Town Council. This committee is made up in a similar way to the South Norfolk Alliance in that its members include not only town councillors, but also community groups such as Diss Churches Together, Farmers Market, Diss Business Forum and others. Diss Community Partnership Diss Community Partnership (DCP) has only one purpose: to improve, in all possible ways, the quality of life of everyone who lives in or around the town. The partnership is a membership organisation and tries to promote the ideas and interests of local people. It is bottom up rather than top down. Launched in 2002, and originally called the Diss and District Development Partnership, DCP works together with statutory, voluntary and community bodies within the town. It is legally recognised as a “Community Interest Company”, and it is registered as such at Companies House. The partnership has no religious or political axes to grind, and although it seeks to be financially successful, no member can gain any financial benefit. Everyone who plays any part does so voluntarily. The partnership sometimes gives grants to enable community groups to tackle practical projects – setting

DCP tries to encourage groups within the community to do things for themselves and to give them a voice, which might otherwise not be heard. The partnership has been particularly interested in campaigns and projects associated with local food and a sustainable way of living. Diss Farmers’ Market has been consistently supported as have festivals celebrating local food and drink. Among the biggest and most successful projects which DCP has supported have been festivals celebrating aspects of the town’s history. In 2004, for example, a wide range of events was organised to commemorate the 500th anniversary of John Skelton’s appointment as Rector of St. Mary’s parish church. Skelton was tutor to the young Henry VIII and an unusual poet. More recently, the partnership gave strong backing to lectures, debates, dancing and exhibitions to mark the bi-centenary of the death of Thomas Paine, the great 18th century radical thinker and writer who, as a young man, worked for a time in Diss. The partnership likes to use Email for communicating with members and organising events, but we encourage membership irrespective of whether people are on-line. disscommunity.net is a website where people can create the content and local community groups can have their own pages without the need for any programming skills. The partnership has some real expertise in this field. Working jointly with Diss Town Council, the partnership played a central role in delivering a programme of projects around Cittaslow. This is an international campaign that focuses on the importance of quality of life and everything local. For example, Cittaslow encourages people to care about and protect what makes their town distinctive, including looking after the environment, local heritage and traditions, promoting locally made goods and sustainable tourism. Diss is one of only half a dozen towns in the UK to have won Cittaslow status. For two years, the partnership ran the Cittaslow Resource Centre in the centre of Diss, mainly to showcase Cittaslow, but also to act as a place where people could drop in, browse the website, access training, or become a volunteer. The partnership is always pleased to welcome new members and volunteers. Diss Community Farm DCF is a Community Supported Agriculture project, in other words, we’re a community group who has come together to farm land for ourselves. Diss Community Woodland Quaker Wood lies on Factory Lane between Diss and Roydon. It is owned and managed by a local voluntary group and is open all the year round. It is planted with a mixture of indigenous hardwood species and the first young trees were planted out in 2008. Therefore it is still some way off maturity. However it benefits from some fine mature hedgerow oak trees and a pond that is being developed for wildlife. A small enclosed wildlife meadow will be retained in the centre. The management objectives are to involve the local community in the development of an open space nature reserve for the benefit of the local people and local wildlife. Local schools are particularly encouraged to make use of the learning resources and Diss Church Junior School has been growing tree stock in its own tree nursery since before Quaker Wood was established. Working parties are held on the first Saturday morning of each month to carry out a variety of management tasks according to the season. These include tree planting, brush cutting, tree care etc and it will not be long before thinning and production of woodland material will be part of the management. All ages are most welcome at the working parties and no special skills are required. Running costs are covered entirely be local voluntary donations. Significant financial contributions, especially those that celebrate family occasions, will be acknowledged by a suitably engraved plaque at the entrance. Anybody interested in helping in the woodland, joining the management committee or fundraising etc should contact one of the following. It has four almshouses and makes small grants to residents in the civic parish of Diss where assistance from public funds or other bodies is non-existent or inadequate. Museum Diss Museum is situated in the Market Place in a building called The Shambles, formerly two butchers’ shops. There are a variety of displays, frequently changed, about the history of the town and area. Always on display are the Old Rectory Doll’s House, old photos and jottings from the Memory Bank. Local firms like Cupiss, Aldrich, Anness and Gaze have all been featured. Panels in the windows depict significant characters and events from the town’s past. Outreach activities include: talks to groups and schools, tours of the town (including a Murder Tour) and involvement in events like the Roydon Riots Centenary (1993), Skelton Festival (2004), Nelson Bi-centenary (2005), Betjeman Centenary (2006), Local History Festival (2007), Tom Paine Festival (2009) and Friends In High Places: The Manning Story (2011). Interest is promoted by regular columns in the local newspapers and community magazines. The museum is administered by a registered Charitable Trust and supported by Diss Town Council. In 2012 Accreditation was awarded by the Arts Council. Accreditation is the UK standard for museums and galleries. It defines good practice and identifies agreed standards, thereby encouraging development, helping to guide museums to be the best they can be. The museum has won a Gulbenkian Award for the greatest improvements achieved with limited resources. The Tom Paine Festival won the East of England Market Towns Culture Award and a Museums & Heritage Award for Excellence for the best project on a limited budget. The day-to-day running of the museum is largely by volunteers. The Friends of Diss Museum provide stewards and financial support for special projects. The Borderhoppa This is a minibus service for people living within North Suffolk and South Norfolk who find getting to places difficult. This could be because your village is not covered by a bus service, or because you have a mobility problem that makes travelling by bus difficult. Community Health Services A wide variety of community health staff operate from the Health Centre, making local services available with minimum travelling time. A wide range of clinics is held at the Health Centre; while some staff (such as district nurses) also visit patientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; own homes. Regular clinics include: foot health services, speech and language therapy for children and adults, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics, health education, cognitive behavioural therapy, baby clinic and breast feeding support (every Friday morning). The nursing staff includes health visitors, midwives, a school health advisor, community nurses and psychiatric nurses. A social worker and part-time volunteer co-ordinator are also based at the Health Centre. For more information about your local community health services (not the GP Practices), please call 644513. A Carers Meeting is held at the Health Centre on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 2pm. It lasts about 2 hours and there is usually a speaker for the first part and drinks and biscuits are provided. The Friends of Diss Health Centre The Friends is a registered charity which provides equipment and amenities not normally supplied by the NHS for the patients of Diss Health Centre. The money to do so is generously provided by those who wish to show their gratitude for the care and attention they, or people close to them, have received from staff at the Health Centre. The Friends’ committee includes local people and some staff members. Members receive regular newsletters and are invited to attend the charity’s annual meeting. South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band Registered Charity No. 1116270 The band, based in Diss, was formed in 1974 and its motto is ‘Music is Fun’. We accept any woodwind, brass or percussion player, aged between eight and 23, irrespective of ability; and we do not hold auditions. We are based, and rehearse, at the Diss Youth and Community Centre on Shelfanger Road on a Tuesday night between 7.00 and 9.00pm. Playing with the band gives members the encouragement to continue to study and enjoy their music making; and to provide that purpose for the hard work required. The band also bridges the gap between school and adulthood. Some professional musicians, who have graduated through the band, may otherwise have given up before making music their career. We are completely independent and self-financing. Every year the band performs many concerts, raising money for charities and other organisations, and toured Malaysia in 2012, raising £250,000 for charity. The band has strong links with the Corps of Army Music and the Royal Marines Band Service. It holds a residential weekend with one of the leading army bands; and also organises tours, trips and events. In July 2006 we were awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This recognises and rewards excellence in voluntary activities carried out by groups in the community. We offer the opportunity for like-minded young musicians to come together to perform and play. The band is SAFE accredited and is an accredited Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme assessor. We are always looking for new members and are available for hire. Waveney Choir The Waveney Choir, which has been established in Diss since 1970, sings music of all types and age and gives recitals throughout Norfolk and Suffolk, in aid of charities and church funds. Our membership is large (70 plus), Diss Town Guide 2013-2015

Waveney Springs The Waveney Springs Art Collective was formed in 2008 so that artists and makers living and working in approximately 10 miles of Diss could come together to share ideas, give workshops and exhibit as a group. Our name is derived from the fact that we bridge the Norfolk/Suffolk boundary from both sides of the Upper Waveney Valley. During the month of August the Collective exhibit their work in a large number of shops in Diss Town Centre. Then once again the artists will open their studios to the public for ; Art Trail which takes place during early September. Wingfield Barns A beautiful, secluded venue situated in a peaceful corner of North Suffolk close to the Norfolk border. We regularly host concerts and plays and have a fortnightly cinema in the Great Barn in the afternoon and evening on alternate Wednesdays. There are a number of exhibitions during the year, displaying the work of a variety of artists and photographers, including the International Mini Print Exhibition in the summer months. YOUTH ACTIVITIES Diss Youth Group Runs on a weekly basis for young people at high school aged between 11 and 16 years old. The group meets every Wednesday during term time at Diss Youth and Community Centre from 7pm - 8.30pm, apart from the second Wednesday of the month, when it is an after school session from 3.30pm - 5pm. Young people can enjoy games including table tennis, pool and sports, arts and crafts, tuckshop and fundraising activities, as well as seek support from qualified youth workers to discuss different issues.

Diss Young Carers Diss Young Carers runs on a fortnightly basis for young people aged 11 18 years and who have caring responsibilities at home. The group meets every other Thursday during term time at Diss Youth and Community Centre from 4.30pm - 6.30pm. Young people enjoy a meal together, as well as have the opportunity to take part in activities and trips out. Scouting can start at the age of 6 in the Beaver Section. From age 8 to 10 years 6 months they join the Cub Scout Section; and from that age to 15 years they belong to the Scout Section. The Explorer Unit offers adventurous activities for young people aged 14 to 18 years old. As they progress through the sections they become more responsible for organizing their own activities and training, although adult guidance is always in the background. Scouting is always looking for new helpers and Leaders and would welcome any offers of help from suitable adults.

With the help of adult volunteers, young people are encouraged to work together and share their skills and enthusiasm, to feel empowered to form opinions and make decisions, and to play an active and positive role in the world around them. CLUBS AND SOCIETIES Diss & District Allotment Holders Association This thriving Association based in Louie’s Lane currently has 74 members and a waiting list for plots. The annual subscription for a plot (approx.30’x 45’) is currently £18 and is reviewed yearly. This includes affiliation to the National Society of Allotment & Leisure Gardeners which provides advice and guidance to the Association as well as the availability of a cheap seed scheme. Old Dyssean Society In September 1999 more than 60 former pupils of Diss Secondary Grammar School attended a reunion at Montgomerie Hall, Diss to discuss the renaissance of what is now called The Old Dyssean Society. The main aims are to bring former pupils of all ages together, and circulate news via the publication of newsletters twice annually. Dennis Meadows, an evacuee from Lowestoft, who attended the school for a short time, was the prime mover in the revival, and is currently Founder Vice-President. Peter Thrower is Chairman. Reg Wright, a pupil from 1936-42 and later a teacher at the school, is the elected President. The annual subscription is £5, and reunions are held in late September at Diss Golf Club. Diss Rivercare Group We are a sociable group of volunteers dedicated to the maintenance and promotion of the River Waveney. Diss & District Woodturning Club A small, friendly club, with both male and female members, based in Redgrave. It has the use of an excellent workshop and has a fabulous Jet lathe capable of carrying out all types of turning, from the most intricate to quite literally treetrunks! All categories of woodturners are welcome to join the club, from the absolute beginner to the expert! Help and guidance is available for all, irrespective of experience or ability, to develop your turning technique, improve your designs or tackle that project you have always dreamed of! The club meets on the last Friday evening of the month at 7.30pm. Most meetings have a guest demonstrator to inspire members to tackle new or more ambitious projects plus a small number of all day demonstrations. Demonstrators vary from professional turners of international repute, to local professionals and talented amateurs from throughout East Anglia. We also try to include at least one social event each year. These have varied from BBQ lunches entertained by live jazz bands, to informal dinners in local pubs. The club is also affiliated to the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (AWGB). The main school building has six classrooms, Food Tech area, a resource/ intervention quiet room, a large hall and servery, a staffroom and two offices. All classrooms have storage shelves, benched computers, interactive whiteboards, a variety of IT equipment, a sink, altro and carpeted floor areas and an outside fire door, giving access to outdoor learning space. The Nursery is a separate purpose-built unit. It has a large activity/playroom, a quiet area, kitchen and cloakroom. The outside playground is securely fenced, with gates providing access to the field and Reception areas. The school grounds consist of a large playing field, hard playground with sheds for storage of outside play equipment for Reception children, planters (maintained by the children) and seated shelters. There is also an adventure playground, play hut and train and a wildlife area. Extra trees have been planted to afford shade. Much use is made of the outside environment for all kinds of investigations, observations and physical activities. The school is very active in promoting walking to school and has been awarded Travel Plan awards every year for the last five years. We hold Healthy School status in addition to the Activemark, Arts Council accreditation, Basic Skills mark and ICT accreditation. The Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Centre Building was completed in 2007 which serves as a hub to local services, supporting many families within the area. In the main school there is two form entry. Rugby – Diss Rugby Club Diss Rugby Club was founded in 1958. The Club has its own ground - ‘Mackenders’, at Bellrope Lane, Roydon - with excellent clubhouse facilities. The club runs four senior sides and a Veterans XV, with the First XV playing in the London Divisions of the RFU National League. There is a highly successful junior and youth section, providing rugby for all ages from 6-19, which is producing players who have gained representative honours at County, Divisional and National levels in recent seasons. Bath and England player Dan Hipkiss spent his formative years at Diss RFC. Four young players have played for England whilst still at Diss. Snooker – Diss Cue Club Since 2008, Diss Cue Club has been housed in a new, purpose designed building. More than just a Snooker Club, there are six Pool tables, including two

Swimming - Diss Swim & Fitness Centre (DSFC) Diss Swim and Fitness Centre has a 25m main pool and a learner pool. There is also a gym, sauna, steam room and spa. A variety of water based classes take place throughout the week along with an extensive swimming lesson programme designed for all ages and abilities. The gym is now home to the latest cardiovascular equipment and also offers qualified instructors who are available to help you achieve your goals and motivate you to complete your workout. When joining the gym every new member is given an induction and a demonstration of our wide range of equipment and an explanation of what each piece of machinery can do for you, after which you can start your workout. In the pool, Swim School lessons start for children from just four months old. All of our Swim School sessions form part of the National Plan for Teaching Swimming and all of our teachers are certified with the Amateur Swimming Association. The National Plan for Swimming is an all-inclusive programme, which takes non-swimmers from their first splash, all the time developing their confidence in the water. The pool also offers adult only swim sessions from 7am each week day morning, fun sessions with floats and inflatables, adult and general swim sessions and Aqua Fit classes. The pool is also available for private hire and parties and during the school holidays we offer a range of water-based activities for children. SPORTS your way of life and you can apply for a leisure passport, which, if eligible, will offer you reduced price admission to leisure facilities both within and outside South Norfolk. Diss Otters Swimming Club Based at Diss Swimming Pool, the club was formed in September 1987 to promote competition amongst young swimmers and ‘Masters’. It has grown in strength and depth since then and regularly has swimmers competing at club and county level. The ‘Masters’ or adults group is one of the largest in Norfolk. Swimmers of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to improve or learn new strokes, enter competitions or just keep fit. Training sessions are held in a six-lane, 25 meter pool, on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday evenings, plus Sunday morning. The addition of spectator seating upgraded the pool enormously so that Diss Otters can now offer visiting clubs facilities on a par with any other club in Norfolk. Tennis – Heywood Sports & Leisure Club The club is long established and new members are welcome to the Walcot Road courts. There are three floodlit hard courts, car parking and use of the adjoining facilities. The club is in the first divisions of the Norwich Leagues and has men’s, ladies’ and mixed teams in the local South Norfolk League. Juniors and beginners are also welcome with coaching available.
