Bits & Bobs
Welcome
O
h my goodness November is here already, how quickly we have got here!! I've had a roller coaster of a year and felt rather tired and jaded, but this all changed when Sarah and I were invited by the Dream On team to experience one of their amazing make-over days. I felt like a million dollars as I drove home from a fabulous day; they completely got me. Thank you so much for a great day, I am loving my new hair-do. I am booking my Mum in for one of Dream On's special days as she deserves to be spoilt. I couldn't think of a nicer treat for her. You can win a Dream On make-over in this month’s issue, so enter now.
Pete Gillings told me about buying a property through my dad, John Lucas, of Partridge & Lucas back in the 70's. Pete said "he was a proper old gent" it really made me very proud. Pete has got so many fantastic stories to tell and I was really chuffed to be able to do the feature on such a fun and interesting local character. We all wish you a very Happy 65th Birthday and retirement ha ha, Pete, from the whole team here at YLM, I loved getting to take the photos for this feature, thank you. Hope you enjoy reading this month’s YLM, as much as we love producing it.

Making a Difference July 25th 2013 and a group of 9 people from the local area are on their way to Kosova. This is not the first time a group will travel to Kosova and it will not be the last. The trip has been organised by DC3 (Diss Christian Community Church). Every year, since 2009, people from DC3 make the trip to Victory Church in Gjakove, Kosova; this time Jane Pooley and Charlotte Baker-Crick were among the 9. The group rented part of the church building to stay in and the money from this rent went towards helping the poorest families in the community. Why are they all here? To help in any way they can. Victory Church has a social project supporting at least 150 families. They provide food parcels, prayer, new clothes and furniture; they help with cleanliness and health, flooding, the cold and much more. Jane and Charlotte's group helped to give out 17 food parcels, each food parcel will last a family 3-4 weeks. However, nothing is done randomly, every family is visited first to see exactly what it is they need. Whilst there, they also gave out sustainable things to help the families to be able to help themselves. They bought and delivered three handcrafts for the women to make and sell, 2 sheep and 28 chickens! The sheep and the chickens were
#41 November 13
transported in the back of their car! “The families were always so happy, even though they had nothing” remembers Jane “we gave a sheep to one family and the woman started jumping around in happiness!” Most of the families the group visited lived in one or two roomed houses, some lived in houses only half built as they had run out of money and some didn’t even know if they would still be in their house the following month or if they were would it be flooded. We asked Jane and Charlotte what their most memorable moment was; “It was very hard to see the children with so little. One day we visited a family and we sat round on the floor with them, we played with the children and gave out little gifts like bouncy balls, colouring pads and pencils and sang songs with them. Even though they were poor they had family and that was all that mattered”. Money is currently being raised to purchase the families' bee hives and there are thoughts about travelling back to help finish some of the houses. Jane and Charlotte would like to thank everyone that donated money and helped.

Out & About
Out About When I was told that I would be doing a makeover for ‘Out & About’ I was mortified. Everyone who knows me knows that a makeover is my worst nightmare. I’ve always been a tomboy; growing up playing football, riding my bike, being with animals. My idea of a makeover was managing to brush my hair in the morning! So, as you can imagine, I was in a bit of a panic. Thankfully, the first thing we did was to have a cup of tea (as you may have already realised from previous Out & Abouts I like a brew!). There were 5 of us, including me and Wendy. We were all welcomed and then split up into hair, make-up and clothes styling. My first stop was hair; the hairstylist was Sam from John Olivers in Ipswich and she discussed with me what I would like. With Wendy’s encouragement I decided to be brave and asked for a cut that I had always wanted, a very short style based on the Natalie Imbruglia music video ‘Torn’. Sam got the video up there and then and thought that it
Sarah Wilkinson
would suit me so I said ‘go for it!’ I did not regret it! As I could see the cut coming together I relaxed and became more excited. Once it was finished I was over the moon! My next stop was make-up with Rachael from Divine Radiance. ‘This is going to be embarrassing’ I thought as she asked me what my daily beauty regime was and I replied ‘umm…I wash!?’ But Rachael was so nice and having my make-up done was amazing, I couldn’t believe how different it made me look and feel. I was actually starting to like this makeover malarkey! Rachael explained how to do everything step by step and wrote it down so that I could replicate it at home. Once my hair and make-up were done it was downstairs for the clothes styling. I was nervous as my dress sense can be a bit ‘quirky’. However, I was allowed to go round all the clothes with the stylist and pick anything to try on. I think anyone would like this; I was like a kid in a candy store. The clothes were awesome! I felt like a princess try-
ing everything on and the styling team, Nicki, Amanda and Esther, did everything for you and made you feel so special. A full, delicious lunch was laid out by Marcie complete with a glass of wine! We really were looked after. In the afternoon we had our photos taken, of all the clothes we tried on we had to choose two outfits. My favourite outfit was a black dress that I would never have chosen if I’d seen it on the rail but when I tried it on I LOVED it!! It was gorgeous and so comfortable. I felt like a new person. I saw someone different in the mirror and I felt changed; more confident and comfortable with who I was. It was an amazing feeling!!

Dream On
www.dream-on.co.uk
Dare to Dream There are many parts of Dream On that make it a great place to work but I can honestly say that our Makeover Days are very special. When the idea of the Makeover Days began we were very careful about who we chose to work at it. Sam our hairdresser is from John Olivers in Ipswich. She is a fantastic hairdresser who we all use and rate highly. Sam is excellent at advising clients on styles that will suit them as well as interpreting requests for different looks… Sarah actually wanted something that resembled Natalie Imbruglia. Sarah was so right…she looked fantastic. Fortunately for Dream On, our makeup artist lives in the village & runs a business called Defining Radiance. They have a wealth of experience but also understand that shopping for beauty products can be tricky and expensive mistakes can be made therefore they are always happy to suggest makes to suit all. We secretly love listening to them for the latest trends and products. Sarah’s make-up was soft & natural, just enough to give her the look she wanted. The day starts with a cup of tea, cake and an introduction to Dream On. The ‘before’ photos are taken and then the day begins. The ladies either spend time with our hairdresser, beautician or the stylists. On this occasion it was Nicki & myself. Throughout the day we rotate to enable everyone plenty #41 November 13

of time with each professional. As stylists at Dream On we have personally chosen the collections up to a year previously so we know our stock inside out. Many women do not enjoy high street shopping and some feel they are stuck in a rut and need someone to look at them with a fresh pair of eyes. We are happy to show how spending a bit of time on yourself can be such a positive experience. Having chatted with the customer we can build up a picture of what they are looking for. Sarah was very open to trying new styles but it soon became obvious which collections were right for her….a gorgeous collection by a Cornish designer (EKO) worked for her daytime look but she also looked stunning in a LBD & heels…from our Pennyblack range.
We make sure that lunch is light but delicious and there is always a glass of wine available. The support from others on these days never cease to amaze us…women are so generous with their comments and this positive atmosphere only adds to the day. The ‘after’ photos are such fun. The best photos are natural and when you feel good about yourself you do not have to put on a smile...it comes naturally! Even the most self-conscious women gain confidence & love the photos. We send each person a set of the photos as a memory. The only thing you need to remember about the day is that you may want to continue to enjoy your new look so our advice is book something special for the evening or at the very least, drop enough hints…
A DREAM ON DIAMOND VOUCHER... With her Diamond gift voucher in hand the holder will be treated to a full makeover including hair, make up and styling on one of our popular makeover days AND will have £90 to spend on clothes and accessories to crown the day! Not only that, lunch and refreshments are included, and informal before and after photos as a memento of their day. To enter, let us know why you think you/friend or family member deserve a make-over, and we'll pick out the best entry. Send your answer to Competitions, YLM, 3 Hales Yard, Diss, IP22 4AF or email to sarah@ylm.co.uk by 20th November to be in with a chance of winning. Usual Circuit Media competition rules apply.

Nature Bugs Activity: Lantern making.
Lanterns are great at this time of year. Join a lantern walk or hang them in the garden. What you need: Jam jar (soak the label off) Tissue paper (torn into strips) Leaves and feathers PVA glue (watered down a little bit so it’s easy to paint on) String and wire How to make it: 1. Cover your glass jar in glue. 2. Stick on a few leaves. 3. Add more glue on top of
leaves and cover with tissue strips. 4. Add more glue on top of tissue paper, this will help protect the tissue and will dry clear. 5. Tie a piece of string around the neck of the jar. 6. Thread a piece of wire under the string on opposite sides to make a long handle, twist the wire around itself to secure. 7. Add a candle, glow stick or small torch. Alternative: use the bottom half of a 1 litre plastic milk
bottle with glow stick or battery candle instead of jar. We’ve got lots of lovely activities planned for the autumn and winter, including lantern making, bird feeders and leaf crowns. Come and join us on a Thursday morning. We even have hot chocolate when it starts to get cold! Contact details To find out more or book a place Joanne@naturebugs.co.uk 01449 780369.

Your child’s education is important to us. We want them to enjoy learning, to be inquisitive and grow in stature. Our school is committed to achieving the highest standards of which pupils are capable. We keep our Reception Class small, allowing our youngest pupils to settle at their own pace. These children quickly grow in

confidence and ability within our nurturing environment. Our open class sessions enable parents to join their child and become acquainted with what they are learning and how they are progressing. This school uses a skills based approach to learning, with topics and themes designed to give children memorable experiences. With a huge amount on offer from our well stocked library to our sporting supremacy, we welcome an increasing number of new pupils from Diss and elsewhere, attracted by our small school country environment and low pupil numbers. Our ‘Buddies’ support children when they start school, no matter how old that child may be, and are there to help others in all situations. Q&A
Q&A Kiki Dee
By Daisy Simpson.
S
inger Kiki Dee shot to fame thanks to her duet “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with Elton John. Her first ever review said, ‘Kiki Dee can only get better!’ and in my eyes she truly has. Now, the talented and warm-hearted Kiki is far from the spotlight and says she prefers the quieter and more intimate concerts with Carmelo Luggeri, who she has been working with for nearly two decades. Last month I was privileged to attend one of their more personal gigs, in the local village of Wingfield, Suffolk and managed to ask her a few questions...
focus at the moment. Next year, we are looking at touring abroad, mainly throughout Europe, however, there are talks of the States and we have also been offered an Australian record deal which we are thinking about. It will all be new for us as we tend not to travel much, but it’s all exciting. Q. What are your ambitions in the future? A. Just to expand really. I want more people to know about our music and know more about what we do. If we can keep filling concerts and gigs we will be happy. Q. What is your biggest achievement? A. Survival, 50 years recording and still moving on! There are also the obvious highlights of my life such as Live Aid and singing ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ with Elton John.
Q. How did you find the gig tonight?
Q. What is the best concert you’ve played?
A. I’ve absolutely loved tonight. I loved the intimacy. It took me a while to get used to the closeness of the audience, but I saw nothing but smiling faces, everyone was amazing.
A. There are the obvious concerts again; however, I prefer the more intimate concerts for the music we play.
Q. How did you meet Carmelo? A. We met in the early 90s and we hit it off musically straight away. We were both from pop and rock backgrounds and we just met at a time when we were both ready to be honest about what we wanted to do musically. We love the freedom of what we do, it’s what you want when you’re older.
Q. Do you still get nervous before you perform? A. Yes, I always get nervous, but you just have to give all you can to your audience. Q. What was the music scene like in the 1970s and how has it changed?
Q. What’s happening for you over the next six months?
A. There was a lot of new stuff in the 70s, everyone was trying new sounds. I wouldn’t know what music sounds like now to a young ear. Back then, music was the only thing we had, it’s a different world now.
A. Well we have just got the new album ‘A Place Where I Can Go’ out which is our main
Q. How do you feel when you listen back to your older songs?
#41 November 13
A. I love all of them; they’ve lasted and I think each one is classy. Q. What is your favourite song of all time? A. I don’t have a particular favourite, but I would say it would have to be something like ‘Summertime’, it’s a beautiful song. Q. Which of your songs is your favourite? A. I really love ‘She’s Smiling Now (A Mother’s Song) from the new album, or Amoureuse. Q. Are you still friends with Elton John? A. Yes we are, although I don’t tend to see him much. Q. What advice would you give to an up and coming musician? A. Surround yourself with very sensible people and have a good lawyer! You must believe in yourself and stay true to who you are. Q. What do you think of Suffolk? A. I don’t know Suffolk that well, but it’s beautiful. I live in the countryside in Hertfordshire, but I often jump in my car to London to get my city fix! Q. How do you unwind? A. I’ve just signed up to a year’s Yoga course. I wanted to do something that was completely different to performing. Yoga takes me to a different place. You can see Kiki and Carmelo at their next Suffolk concert at the Arts Centre in Haverhill on 9th November. To purchase their new album ‘A Place Where I Can Go’ visit www.kikiandcarmelo.com

DISS & DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB

As the weather turns colder the temptation is to pack your camera away until Spring, but you would be missing out on the opportunity to take some great photographs. When snow has fallen, even the most mundane scene can become a magical place, but if your pictures have a blue cast you may need to adjust the white balance. Most digital cameras have this setting in the controls. Try the cloudy setting to warm up the image, or you may have a snow or beach setting, which both do the same thing. Landscape photographs are best shot early on a morning or just before sunset when the light is warmer and the longer

shadows help add depth to the scene. In winter, wildlife becomes a little braver in the hunt for food. To get great close up shots of birds, place a feeder close to a window, and set up a moss covered branch as a perch next to it. After a few days, the birds will happily land on the branch before feeding, and will soon get used to you at the window with your camera, for the best results place your camera on a tripod, zoom in and pre-focus on the branch, and when a bird appears all you have to do is press the shutter. For slightly more elusive animals such as deer, dress warmly, avoiding bright colours, and approach them slowly from downwind. Patience is the key to great wildlife photos! You don't have to venture far for great winter pictures though, snow-laden branches, frost covered leaves, Christmas fairy lights, or children playing in the snow can all make great photos. You could even use them as your Christmas cards this year!
History Diss Camera Club hold a free annual exhibition of member's photographs. This year it was at St. Mary's Church from the 21st to 27th of September 2013. Members volunteered to greet visitors and were very pleased with the enthusiastic response. Now, in our 34th year, the Camera Club is thriving with a new emphasis this season on inviting members to meet in the local area to take photographs as a group. This is in addition to our 2013-2014 Club night programme of events which include visits by guest speakers on a range of photographic subjects. Our members meet at the Grasmere overlooking the Mere, in Denmark Street, Diss at 7:30PM on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month. swank interiors creative mirror displays
Creative Reflection by Jane Michie.
Mirrors in the home are used for many different reasons; the majority of us use them in hallways, bathrooms and bedrooms as a means of reflecting, or checking our own appearance. Many use mirrors to create additional light within dark homes; I used this technique by adding large window style mirrors in both the living and dining rooms, not only to bounce the natural light around but also to reflect artificial light. Mirrors can also be used to create the illusion of increased space and depth. They can make small rooms look less cramped and can also reflect views of greenery into the home, bringing the outside in. Another way of using mirrors is to group co-ordinating mirrors in a variety of sizes to create
#41 November 13
a porthole effect, adding an extra dimension of texture onto a darker wall. The photo demonstrates an example of this by showing a series of four mirrors which are displayed together, giving the impression they are more of a piece of art. These were deliberately grouped and hung to create a balance between the mirrors and correspond to the width of the console table below. By judging the wall space available in your own home, this can help naturally dictate how mirrors can be displayed, including whether they can be grouped vertically or horizontally. For example a small set of two or three mirrors are the easiest to group together, whilst in larger areas a grid of mirrors can look very dramatic.
Even just turning a basic square shaped mirror around and rehanging in a diamond position can turn a simple shape into something more exciting, especially if this is placed on top of patterned wallpaper. By using a pair of mirrors or elegant mirrored sconces, you could position them in places such as alcoves, either side of doors or windows, or either side of a bed. Creating romantic lighting reflected by table lamps or candles. When looking around your home try repositioning mirrors or changing their location as this can create an entirely new look. With the help of a friend or family member you can achieve the exact position, by stepping back to view the overall finished effect, and also avoid making mistakes whilst drilling holes.

Ex-Eastenders star swoons over Grand Designs wood floor No stranger to ‘treading the boards’, a former Eastenders actress says that her favourite part of a new Grand Designs project in London is the oak wooden flooring. The 3,700 sq ft new build project in Kentish Town is home to interior designer Deborah Sheridan-Taylor, who played the character Saskia in Eastenders, and entrepreneur Jonathan Broom. The project featured in the current series of Channel 4’s Grand Designs, and Suffolk based flooring supplier Source Wood Floors* provided the “amazing” wooden flooring. (www. sourcewoodfloors.co.uk) Presented by Kevin McCloud, Grand Designs follows ambitious self-building projects, where individuals attempt to design and build the home of their dreams. This particular episode follows Deborah and Jonathan’s journey as they attempt to create a tranquil oasis in London. The house has no outfacing first floor windows, while the ground floor is made up almost entirely of glass. A house of contradiction, it brings the outside inside, yet seeks solace at the same time. The house also boasts a concealed basement which is the size of two double decker buses, and double the size of the other two floors. Complete with swimming pool, gymnasium, sauna and a separate self-contained flat. The engineered wooden floor is an oiled and brushed oak named ‘Burano grey’ - one of the highest quality Venetian stained floors offered by Source Wood Floors. #41 November 13
The rustic grade floor exudes character with natural markings and colour variations. (www. sourcewoodfloors.co.uk/shop/ burano-grey-oiled-brushed-oak-. html). Will Dawson, flooring sales manager of Source Wood Floors, said: “We are all big fans of Grand Designs and were delighted when Jonathan and Deborah chose our floor. There are many elements that come together to make this a beautiful and sustainable house, one of which is our wooden floor. From start to finish everyone has been an absolute pleasure to work with.” Jonathan Broom said: “My wife and I are over the moon with the house, and that’s thanks, in no small part, to Source Wood Floors who supported us throughout the project and supplied an amazing wooden floor. After a couple of days in our new property, my wife woke one morning and said the floors were her favourite part of the whole house. I couldn’t agree more; they’re wonderful. Sustainable and environmentally friendly, the floors fitted in with our design ethos.” Situated in Wortham on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, Source Wood Floors sells high quality solid wood flooring and engineered wood floors, as well as an extensive range of accessories. Source Wood Floors prides itself on highest quality and best value. Contact Will Dawson, Source Wood Floors flooring sales manager, for information. Email: willdawson@sourcewoodfloors. co.uk. Trompe l’oeil in a Garden Hidden within a beautiful garden in the picturesque town of Eye is what you’d be forgiven for thinking is just the front of another house. If you look closely though you will see that it is actually a mural! The gentleman who did the painting is Alan Dodd and he has been doing murals since the very early 1970’s. Jenny and David, whose garden it is, spoke to the owners of the house that backs on to their garden and they were happy for them to have the work of art painted onto the 50ft wall. Alan started the project in the middle of June and it took 50 days, working 5 hours a day. Alan mapped out his initial ideas on paper but they grew as he went along. “The wall is like a huge
canvas” says Alan “it is illusionistic – everything is contained within it. It is difficult to make things stick out; you have to go within the picture world”. This piece was Alan’s first ever exterior mural, he usually works in indoor historic architectural settings, for example, Home House, where he put back the original paintings of Zucchi, from tiny designs to 7ft tall ones. Alan is used to working with specialist paints and for this exterior mural he used eicó paints, which are exterior grade, supplied by Ben Sturges owner of Paints and Interiors, Alburgh, Norfolk. How was Alan’s experience of his first ever exterior mural? “I had a jolly time doing it, really enjoyed it. Jenny and David have been wonderful”.

crystal clean Family affair
“‘If you can walk on it or sit on it we can Crystal Clean it’”
#41 November 13
Everyone would like a Crystal Clean House and that is exactly what Mark Underwood and Crystal Clean Norfolk can give you. Crystal Clean serves both homes and businesses and can clean a spot or stain, a single room or multiple rooms. So why did Mark, who resides in Occold with his wife Helen, start doing Crystal Clean Norfolk? “I was made redundant a few times and decided that I wanted to do something for myself. Six months before, I was asked if I wanted to buy a business, I wondered if the opportunity was still there so I investigated further and it was”. Mark is now joined by his 24 year old daughter Sophie (pictured). Carpets and suites can cost a lot of money and if you look after them they can last a lot longer. Even if a carpet was vacuumed every day, it would only remove the dirt from the top surface, the rest would get ground in and damage the carpet leaving it looking worn and frayed. Regular deep cleaning can prevent this. Carpet Cleaning the Crystal Clean way: After vacuuming the carpet is pre-sprayed with a micro-splitter. The micro-splitter is a green eco-friendly cleaning agent which ‘mircosplits’ the soil particles without leaving a sticky residue. It is soap and detergent free, odour free, non-toxic as it’s made from food
MARK UNDERWOOD
grade ingredients, hypoallergenic and non-foaming. These microsplitters are not a marine pollutant and are completely biodegradable. They are excellent for everyone but especially people with allergies or those with young children. The carpets are now deep cleaned. This is the process where water and cleaning agent are forced into the carpet under pressure; it mixes with the dirt and then is sucked back out again. After this deep clean the carpet is sprayed with an anti-bacterial sanitising spray. For a Crystal Clean house do not hesitate to contact Mark on 07984 648296 or 01603 905775.
We sat on it, we walked on it and you Crystal Cleaned it! Hats off to you for coping with a pretty chaotic room full of furniture. The difference was amazing – to be honest when we booked to have the dining room done we didn’t think it was that bad – but the carpet is now a different colour! We are really pleased with the result in both rooms and the sofa has come up a treat. I would not hesitate in recommending Crystal Clean Norfolk. Sue Harvey.

Wotcha! How are yer diddlin? Fair t'middlin' I hoop. I'm back from Finland safe and sound, but maybe I wouldn't have gone for so many walks in the forest if I'd realized that a family of bears were not too far away! Bears are on the increase in Finland, and on the day that my wife flew back they'd actually had to shoot a 200kg male bear. Special permits have to be granted and it's only done when the bears are posing a threat to the public – they are coming into towns and into peoples' gardens more and more.

Well, what a funny year it's been in the garden. Dry? I'll say so. I had carrots and potatoes actually dying on me. I haven't even bothered to measure the rainfall this year – so if anyone has I'd be pleased to know what it is to date. I've got 1.5 ins. in my gauge at the moment, gathered mostly from the beginning of Sept. Considering how dry it's been I've had a reasonable crop of spuds and carrots. Picasso, Estima, Majestic & Amsterdam Forcing the varieties respectively. The picture shows, not aliens from outer space, but squashes. They were supposed to be courgettes! Don't ask. Dew yew keep on troshin' and here's a question for you: If you were in the garden and a 200kg bear came through the gate, what would you do? Remember they can bear down on you at a speed of 70mph. That's a bare fact, and it does make you paws for thought doesn't it?! Answers on a jar of honey please (unset).

What's happening in Gabriel's Garden... Autumn is in the air in Gabriel’s Garden and it’s time for one or two more jobs before I can put the garden to bed for the winter. Now there’s a nip in the air it’s time to plant the tulips and this year I have ordered varieties that will give me a fantastic array of colour combinations for the bouquets next April and May. Tulips thrive with good drainage so I add plenty of grit to the heavy soil when I plant them. I’m also sowing the first of the sweet peas, I like the Winter Elegance Mix as they do well under glass and will give me early flowers in the spring, I’ve learnt to keep them covered otherwise mice find them irresistible! I’ve dug up the dahlia tubers, the soil is too wet and heavy in the winter and I don’t want them to rot; they are drying off in the greenhouse before I store them for the winter. The leaves are falling thick and fast and I’m raking as fast as they are falling. I’m collecting them to make leaf mould, I have a container made from wire mesh so they don’t blow around. It has to be left for a couple of years as it takes longer to make than compost but it’s well worth the wait as it is a great soil improver and mulch. I also add it to seed and potting compost helping to reduce the use of peat.
#41 November 13
The annual order of well rotted cow muck has arrived; my arms ache just looking at the huge pile but the positives outweigh the negatives with this one! There are so many good reasons for digging and mulching with well rotted farmyard manure; it is so rich and full of slow releasing natural plant nutrients, it improves the condition and structure of the soil helping to break down the heavy clay in the garden, it will aid water and nutrient retention in sandy soils and the earthworms love it. As the nights draw in and Christmas is round the corner it’s time to think of festive creations. I will be running a series of ‘Christmas wreath’ and ‘Table Decoration’ making workshops in Gabriel’s Garden and at The Pennoyers Centre in Pulham St. Mary. For booking details and or how to order a Gabriel’s Garden Christmas Wreath please visit www.gabrielsgarden.co.uk or telephone 01379 677793.

ention the name Pete Gillings to anyone in the local area and not only will they have definitely heard of him but they will only have good things to say about him. Pete originally hails from the East of London but moved to Diss with his Dad, Bill, and Mum, Nell, when he was 14. He decided that he was not going back to school so that was that! Pete’s father Bill spent the Summertime as a bookmaker at the Flat racing. However, during the Winter they would have no money so Bill got himself a truck and started to collect scrap. Pete himself worked at Woolworths for 2 years while he was 16/17 but then he joined his father, who had continued

to work in the scrap trade, and has dealt with scrap ever since. In the 1970’s Pete moved to Palgrave, where his children grew up. From there he moved to Mellis where he set up ‘Junk Junction’ at the old Railway Stables. ‘Junk Junction’ was open every Saturday selling all kinds of scrap. Out of this Pete started his shop, the Quartermaster’s Stores, in St. Nicholas Street, Diss, a government surplus shop which was very popular and open for more than 30 years! He now runs everything from his scrap yard in Mission Road, Diss. Here you can find anything you can ever imagine. It is a real treasure trove. You will want to look round for hours and it is quite possible to get lost amongst the finds! Pete himself lives above the business. He moved here after his dear mother Nell passed away 3 years ago. Walking into Pete’s house completely takes you aback. After coming in from the scrap yard below you enter a peaceful yet eclectic haven. As you walk up the stairs you pass through a tribute to the old Diss Picture House, complete with the original fire bucket and Box office sign. Along the walls are the original posters of films that Pete himself saw at the picture house; ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’, ‘Gone with the Wind’ and ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ amongst the gems. The main area of the flat is a true example of the variety of things that scrap can be used for, not always necessarily

the things they were originally designed for. For example, above the wooden dining table is a beautiful chandelier; when you look closely you can see that the frame is made from an old steering wheel (more about this later!), metal sundae dishes are bolted to the top to hold the candles and the whole thing is on a pulley system. “You need to think outside the box” reveals Pete “My tall standing lamp is made from a drum that was used to filter the water from a fire hose”. Pete’s kitchen lampshades are actually colanders and his cooker hood is the bonnet of his mum and dads old minor. It was given to his dad when they came to collect his Bentley with only three payments left on it. They knew him and felt sorry for him so they left him the minor. It was this that got them all to Diss! Before Pete’s dad died he was made a Freeman of the City of London, a very proud moment. We asked Pete to explain a bit more about his chandelier… “My first ever lorry was an ex brewery Dennis, hence it was called ‘Dennis’. I ran him until he died and sold him with scrap still in the back for £12.00 per tonne. On the day that he died I was walking away when I heard a loud ‘hiss’! The radiator had gone and I turned round to see the steam hitting the large headlight and dripping off, he was crying! So I went back and asked if I could have the steering wheel. It is this that makes my chandelier frame”.

“Being a scrap merchant is a bit like the film ‘The Misfits’, you’re your own boss and you never know what you’re going to get. It’s a great feeling when you get it right” says Pete “It’s important not to muck people about, always be honest and always be on time!” Pete has many memories from his time as a scrap merchant. One particular memory that stands out is when he was late to an auction due to the car park being closed. As he got there they were then selling 4000 ex-RAF tyres for £120.00, this was very cheap Pete thought. So he stuck his hand up and bought them. Unfortunately, when he went to collect them they turned out to be ties and took him 20 years to sell! He also remembers the time when he purchased more than half a tonne of glass eyes! He was gradually able to sell them with the last lot being sold to a wax works. “Again, it’s all about thinking out of the box; one time we had a load of broom handles and lots of fire hose, so we cut the fire hose down into 3ft sections, then cut it open length ways and put it round the broom handles. We sold these to fire beaters!” says Pete. On 2nd November 2013 Pete Gilling will turn 65. On this day he will retire. Each day will be itemised and he will see if he can manage on the money that he receives. But don’t worry; we are sure that Pete will soon be back working again!! Everyone here at YLM would like to wish Pete a very Happy 65th Birthday!

Autumn fashion Oh how I love this time of year; the beautiful colours of the leaves, crackling fires, candles, nature walks, crispy apples and of course those cosy, fluffy clothes. It’s also that time of year when we start toning down the colours we wear and have a tendency to forget about how we look, leaning rather towards hiding away, bundled up like a Yeti! However, autumn doesn’t have to be this way! It is an excellent season to mix colours together, to express ourselves and to try something new. Autumn is the perfect time to layer. With only a few key pieces you can create many different looks. A dress that you may have worn in the summer can be turned into an autumn outfit by wearing it over a long sleeved plain top. Leggings can also be teamed with a dress, they can be much warmer than tights and there are many different colours and textures available. Check out the Pantone colour suggestions on the opposite page for ideas on combining colours. Layering clothes will keep you much warmer as the weather turns colder. Most people will be starting now to think about wearing scarfs and hats again (your head is very often forgotten when putting an outfit together). Wearing an accessory can completely change the way you look. If you’re not keen on wearing bright colours you can add a splash of colour with a hat or a scarf. Hats in particular are in fashion this autumn, especially felt and wool hats. Something like a felt fedora can be worn with many different outfits to create diverse looks. Even wellington boots are no longer just for practical purposes. Why not wear a bright pair of ‘wellies’ as you splash through the puddles and kick up the leaves!

Autumn colours “Just as the leaves change in autumn, the consumer will enjoy the ability to change their ‘look’ and try a new approach to their wardrobe for brisk days ahead” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute. With Pantone Fashion Colours you can use different combinations to create a different look, depending on how you feel. These colours are far from dull and can be used to inspire new looks. Try combining the greens with Mykonos Blue or the colour Acai can be paired with several of the Pantone Colours to bring variety to the mood and style. You’ve also got Samba Red, Koi – a statement orange, Vivacious – a fuchsia, whose name says it all, Turbulence Gray and Carafe – a glamorous brown. Children love colour! So why not let them wear some of these beautiful and also fun shades; a bright winter coat, stripy snow boots, a multi-coloured hat or simply lots of funky layers. It can be stylish and exciting. The leaves themselves give us inspiration with their many hues! Ponchos are very much back in fashion and these are ideal for kids, keeping them warm without bundling them up too much. They look fantastic and have a vintage feel

Check out www.4funkyflavours.eu for some awesome children’s wear this autumn and for more inspiration on how to enliven your look this season visit www.pantone.co.uk Diss Carnival Queen, Alice (please see above) is wearing clothes by NoGu – No Guts No Glory. Their autumn range is simply perfect for this season. With soft, light knitwear and warm colours that match the Pantone palette. NoGu clothes are designed to be cool and contemporary. It’s all about mixing feminine shapes with a relaxed and comfortable feel, which Alice’s outfit (supplied by Dream On) demonstrates. Nothing feels more wonderful than snuggling down in a knitted jumper in front of a warm glowing fire. Knitwear does not have to be oversized and ‘frumpy’ - although an oversized jumper can look good with leggings or skinny jeans – it can be soft and fitted with a feminine style. A wrap around sweater, for example, will accentuate your figure whilst still giving you that snug, cosy feeling. Have a little adventure this autumn; try it for yourself, experiment and be creative!!

Attleborough Christmas Shopping Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? A question that everyone dreads yet always asks, a thought that we all try to push to the back of our minds and quite frankly rears its ugly head earlier and earlier.
#41 November 13
Christmas Christmas shopping, however, does not have to be the chore we make it into. Attleborough, an historic market town in the heart of Norfolk, is an ideal place to do your Christmas shopping, especially as on Saturday 9th November, 10am – 2pm, Attleborough will be hosting a Christmas Fair. Go along to the Town Hall on Queens Square and take a look around all the stalls. This will be an excellent time to get your Christmas Gifts and also to visit your local shops for Christmas supplies. Have you looked around at your local shops? There are so many hidden gems. By visiting your local stores you are more likely to find things that are unique, a present or decoration that no one else is likely to have. Attleborough has everything you need to do your Christmas shop – a Butchers, Tree Nursery, Craft and Art Shop, Flower Shop, Clothes and Shoes shop, an off licence, supermarket, a bakers, gift shops and much, much more. Another brilliant option is to ‘think outside the box’ as Pete Gillings would say. But what an idea! Visit these places that you might not usually associate with your Christmas shopping. Think with an open mind; be inspired to buy things that you could use to create your own gifts or decorations. Not only will this make
things more personal and special but it could be fun for all the family to get involved in! When planning your Christmas dinner it is always best to buy locally. This way you know exactly where it has come from. If possible choose organic as well. A good place to start is with local farmers or from the local farmers market. Buying direct from the farmer is far cheaper than buying organic from a supermarket. Buying your food locally also means that you are helping to support local jobs. Look for local shops that sell recycled cards and recycled wrapping paper and always check that what you buy can be recycled. For an eco-friendly Christmas tree it is always best to buy a live tree from a managed area or a small scale sustainable grower, you can then re-plant the tree afterwards. Or why not grow your own? So, start looking round your local town, Attleborough, and find what it can offer you this Christmas time!

LinkedIn My name is Alex Russell and I run a web design business called Ulric. Over the next 6 months I am going to cover making your business visible on the internet.
Street Life Do you know what’s going on in your neighbourhood? Perhaps you are new to the area and need a reliable plumber or hairdresser? Or are you organising an event and want to put the word out? Take a look at www.streetlife.com - the local social network with a simple aim: to help people make the most of where they live by connecting with neighbours.

This month I'm going to cover LinkedIn and give you my top ten do's and don'ts. But first what is LinkedIn? LinkedIn is a social networking website for people in professional occupations and business owners. 1. Don't set your LinkedIn account to notify you every time you get a invitation, group discussion or status update... it will drive you mad. 2. Log on to LinkedIn at the same time each day – or twice a day depending on your activity on the network. 3. When you first log on to LinkedIn – post an update for the morning. 4. Join Groups. You should be a member of several, especially the ones where your customers live.
5. Send 4 or 5 invites to connect each day. 6. Mention a special offer from time to time in your posts, maybe twice a month. 7. Change your profile info on a monthly basis, even if it's just to say what project you are working on. 8. Unless it's a connection you don't like the look of, don't be worried about connecting with people you don't really know. 9. Always be upbeat and positive in your posts. People buy off positive, happy people, nobody is interested in your moaning. 10. Use a professional photo in your profile. Obviously there is a lot more to talk about with LinkedIn and I may come back to this at some point in the future to get more in-depth.
It’s about linking with people you don’t know who live nearby. Streetlife is also more of a practical tool – a useful source of local knowledge, and a place to share information, advice and opinions about your area – the online equivalent of chatting over the garden fence. Matt Boyes, CEO of streetlife.com, “Our research shows that people want to take more of an interest in their community, but a lack of information and connections with other local people are the main barriers…Streetlife makes it easier for people to become involved.” Streetlife provides an ideal platform to exchange recommendations, skills and
belongings, organise social groups and events, and discuss local issues and public services. The website is free and easy to use and since being rolled out nationally, it is now gaining momentum in Norfolk & Suffolk. Among the topics being discussed in the last month were the Steampunk Dickensian Fayre in Wymondham, a heated debate around Bungay Medical Centre, someone in Diss looking for second hand demi-johns to start winemaking and adult education in Harleston. To start and join conversations with others in your area, just visit www.streetlife.com.

float away
Unwind and relax Floating is the most effective way to reach the deepest level of profound relaxation. Finding the time to truly relax is rare with today’s busy, intense and often stressful pace of life. However, here is one great solution! Floating! Floating in a large, private, skin temperature heated bath which has been saturated with Epsom Salt, allows your body to relax completely. You float effortlessly on the surface of the shallow bath, just like in the Dead Sea. There is nothing to do – just let yourself go, learn how to relax and spend some quality time with yourself.
“Our large cabin for two enables you to float together with your partner, family member or a friend. The cabin has full standing height along with lighting and music”
Effects on your mind and body: As your body slowly relaxes in this warm, silky smooth environment, your blood vessels dilate and blood flow increases, refreshing every tissue. The constant tension in your muscles, especially your postural muscles, is considerably decreased. After only 20 minutes in the float bath, the brain begins to send out endorphins. Alpha and theta brain waves, which are associated with deep meditation, are generated. People who float can reach the same level of profound relaxation achieved by skilled meditators.
MORETON HALL HEALTH CLUB
Benefits of Floating: - Relaxation - Pain reduction - Overcoming Insomnia - Fertility - Sport Epsom Salt We use the purest Epsom Salt (magnesium sulphate) which is quite different from sea salt. It causes no wrinkling, no matter how long you float, leaving your skin silky smooth. Single Floats The single tanks are perfect to take time for yourself and have complete relaxation. There is a great distance between you in the water and the lid. You take control of whether you close the lid or keep it open. You also can control the lighting in this spacious tank. Couple Floating Our large cabin for two enables you to float together with your partner, family member or a friend. The cabin has full standing height along with lighting and music.

Losing weight in the form of fat...
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Syndrome Most of us are affected by the shift in seasons at this time of year. The Summer draws to a close, the weather changes and those ‘winter blues’ creep up on us. However, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that affects people during a particular season. The symptoms from this have a real impact on everyday life. Symptoms can include the following; depression, sleep problems, no energy, anxiety, alcohol/drug abuse and mood changes. The actual cause of SAD is not clear, there are several theories, but a few contributing factors are as follows:
48
#41 November 13
• Lack of Light – some people need a lot more light than others. • Low levels of Serotonin – this is the brain chemical that controls our mood. • Disrupted Body Clock. So, what can you do if you have SAD? Try to get as much natural light as you can; it won’t cure SAD but it will help. This could be combined with getting important exercise. It is also essential to eat well and avoid stress during the winter months. A lot of people have found a ‘light box’ to be extremely helpful also. Most importantly, if you think that you are suffering from SAD, you must go and see your GP.
When we decide we want to lose weight do we really want to weigh less or fit into small clothes? Do we want to remove the pinchable fat from around our hips and abdomen or do we want to step on the scales, weigh less than last week but still wobble the same? Our body weight is made up of several components some of which are essential and you will never want to lose them. So why not identify which component is which and lose the adipose tissue (fat mass), leaving you with healthy metabolic lean tissue, bone mineral density, organs and water (fat free mass). Being lean (toned) is down to having lower subcutaneous levels of body fat which allow the skin to sit flush to the musculature underneath. By increasing the amount of lean tissue in your body this will help to burn the fat on top as lean tissue will help increase your metabolic rate making fat loss quicker & more sustainable. Two people can
weigh the same but look totally different, having high levels of lean tissue can make you weigh heavier but look smaller as muscle takes up less space than body fat. If you choose to lose weight through calorie restriction alone your body will use muscle protein as a source of energy which will give you weight loss on the scale but you will still have the same amount of fat. Why not create a deficit to burn excess calories by increasing the amount of exercise you do coupled with eating the recommended calories through a healthy & balanced diet? Implementing regular physical exercise will not only help us to lose weight but also boost the immune system, and help prevent heart disease, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and obesity. Exercise also improves mental health and helps to promote positive self-esteem. If you want to find out more and set realistic goals for weight loss then contact us at Fit Club.

John Howard After weight before, at 21 stone. loss at 14 stone.
He lost 7 stone in five months – and seven years on has kept his new shape. This month he shares a recipe prepared by one of his successful dieters that helps you enjoy a healthy Thai curry for those colder evenings. This is a delicious dish and works really well with chicken, turkey, and is absolutely superb with prawns, crayfish tails or monkfish. Other white fish are slimming but can flake and so are best avoided for this mouth watering Thai dish. Thai curry, the ingredients you will need: 1. Either 150g chicken or turkey, 200g prawns or crayfish tails, or 225g of monkfish, with all

Health weights based per person. 2. One calorie sunflower oil spray: This works best as it has the most neutral flavour. 3. Two crushed garlic cloves or one teaspoon of garlic paste. 4. Two heaped teaspoons of yellow Thai curry paste, or red or green paste adjusted according to how hot you like your curry. 5. A splash of light soy sauce. 6. A splash of lemon juice. 7. Two teaspoons of granulated sweetener. 8. Two heaped table spoons of fat free cottage cheese. 9. One small pot of fat free Greek yoghurt (this will be enough for two people). 10. A sprinkle of Garam Masala. To prepare: Fry off your meat or fish (chicken or monkfish need cooking; otherwise just heat the prawns or crayfish up if you have bought them already cooked) in a large wok on medium heat, using your one calorie spray to stop sticking. Drain off any excess water, especially with the prawns, to avoid the sauce becoming runny. Add
garlic, then Thai paste; stirring well to coat meat or fish evenly. Add soy sauce, lemon juice and heat gently until most liquid has disappeared, then add sweetener. Add cottage cheese, stirring constantly but avoid cooking too high or too quickly or it will spoil. Once hot enough, fold in yoghurt; again not too hot or this will curdle. Once you are happy it is hot enough, serve with a sprinkle of Garam Masala to finish and healthy iceberg lettuce to help counteract the curry’s mouth tingling heat. The Cambridge Diet – one to one support. “The Cambridge Diet programme was been developed by health professionals at the University of Cambridge more than 25 years ago,” says John. “There are six different calorie programmes with this plan which offer something for everyone, a recipe book with tips for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as low calorie options where you replace all, or just some of your meals with special healthy low calorie vitamin packed milkshakes, soups and bars.
“These are in a huge range of 26 flavours from chocolate, strawberry and vanilla milkshakes to chicken and mushroom, leak and potato and chilli soups and yoghurt, chocolate and peanut bars to name just some. “Please contact me and I will support you one to one, helping you to feel fitter and fuller of life than you have done for years." John is based at Eye and at a Stowmarket health centre and Dr Simon Rudland, a Suffolk GP, said: “You and your consultant work one to one, which is a very important aspect of this diet's success." Diet coach John Howard, was a national finalist in the Cambridge Weight Plan’s 2010 weight maintainer of the year awards after losing seven stone and keeping his weight off for years. coffee love The fix is in
THISTLEDOWN COTTAGE COFFEE COMPANY
by Gary Rothwell.
Over the years I have always enjoyed a cup of good coffee and more recently started trying to improve the quality of the coffee I drank. Just short of 2 years ago I purchased a small coffee roaster and a quantity of green coffee beans and started roasting a selection of different coffees and was amazed at the different flavours each countries' coffee had to offer. To buy green beans at a reasonable price I had to buy several kilos at a time so I began to sell some coffee locally to family, friends and neighbours. This worked out well for me as it covered the cost of the coffee I drank. After a
#41 November 13
short while I started having many regular customers and feedback about the coffee was excellent. My 'normal' day job I had held for 25 years with the same company. My wife Lucy is training to be a midwife and we had often talked about me reducing my hours to part time once she had qualified and started working and then me spending more time attempting to live 'the good life' at home, growing and rearing our own food. During summer 2012 the company I worked for were having a few issues and the offer of voluntary redundancy was an option given to a few of us. After an excited but scary chat with Lucy one evening I decided to accept the redundancy and start up Thistledown Cottage Coffee. We increased the equipment we had, converted a workshop at the back of our garden and went in to production, producing freshly roasted single origin coffee from around the world. I love going to Farmers Markets as generally the food and drink on offer is going to be good quality, tasty, fresh and made by local people with a passion for what they do, so this seemed like a good place to start for us. After a short while we started supplying coffee to Stuston
Farmshop for their cafĂŠ and just before Christmas last year met Rebecca and Christopher from The Bank and had a great chat about their plans for the old HSBC bank and how they would love to work with us on developing a blend exclusively to The Bank. So one year later and I attend various Farmers Markets around Suffolk as well as Food and Drink Festivals. We've had some harsh days out in the wind, sleet and snow but always come away smiling and looking forward to the next one. At The Bank our coffee is going down very well. There is also their espresso blend being used as well as a manager's special for those who like their coffee strong we are working on some other blends for different methods of brewing coffee, so exciting times ahead. Last month we reached a point where the equipment I initially started with was working flat out to produce what we needed so we have invested in a new roaster and grinder to increase production from the end of October. I am in my element doing this, working from home has been great, meeting and talking to so many of our customers at the various Farmers Markets and I still get to drink some great coffee.

THE CHERRY CATERING COMPANY
November is here... by Gemma Harvey What a great month with lots to look forward to – not least Bonfire Night! Why not treat your family and friends to something a bit different this year? Warm them up when they come in from the cold with a Hot Chocolate Station! It’s so easy to organise before you go out –heat the milk and leave in flasks so there’ll be no delay! The toppings in the picture are just an idea – we used marshmallows, fudge, chocolate chips and honeycomb – you could include squirty cream – or how about a nip of rum or brandy for the adults?! The edible Catherine Wheel looks great and is easy to make – simply dip chocolate biscuit fingers into melted chocolate and then into sprinkles – decorate your plate and voila! The sausage rockets couldn’t be simpler – skewer cooked sausages and a triangle of roasted pepper – how about different colour peppers for different flavour sausages? Whatever you decide stay safe and keep warm x

Celebrating 30 years at The Swan, Brome On 10th November 2013 Alan and Sylvia Garlick celebrate 30 years as landlord and landlady of The Swan Public House at Brome, near Eye, Suffolk. Buying The Swan in partnership with Alan’s brother Ray and sister-in-law Eileen meant the fulfilment of a family ambition. After looking at many properties all over the South East of England they decided on The Swan. Buying the freehold in November 1983 they became only the third owners since the pub became a freehouse in 1973. Ray and Eileen left the pub in 1991 and Alan and Sylvia carried on the business with the help of long-standing loyal staff and to this day they are still going strong. Over the years they have added a 40 seater restaurant and a family room but at the same time remaining very much a ‘locals’ pub with a good selection of real ales that #41 November 13
are considered possibly the best in the area and continuing to use local suppliers, including Adnams and CK Meats, whom they have used the entire 30 years! The pub, which is steeped in history, is traditional and full of character with its original beams. “We are pleased we bought this pub 30 years ago because this is such a lovely area to live and work in and we have made so many friends with people from near and far who have used the pub over the years” say Alan and Sylvia. Running the same pub for 30 years – could this possibly be a record for this area?!

Twelve fairies and a text ANGLES THEATRE
Image from last year’s pantomime “Cinderella”.
A Lazy Bees Scripts pantomime written by Julie Petrucci and Chris Shinn. This version of the well-loved tale purports to be the actual true story told by Sleeping Beauty herself! Plenty of corny jokes and plenty of magic abound in this modern version which retains the original fairy tale plot with the addition of some amusing updates like a texting Princess and a frustrated Prince who can't get a signal on his mobile phone!! Twelve fairies join the whole kingdom to bless King and Queen Ballysilly’s newly born baby Princess Aurora. Everything is going wonderfully well when, with a crash and a bang, the evil fairy Zelda bursts in on the scene and in a fit of jealousy places a horrible curse on the baby princess. “On your eighteenth birthday, a spindle sharp
will make you cry, with a cut so lethal, that You Will Die!” “Oh no.” the audience cry. “Oh yes, I’m afraid she did.” Well that’s sort-of how the real story goes. But that’s also when the pantomime silliness begins and if you want to know how the story ends then come along to the Angles Theatre, in December, and watch the show. We promise you that you will love the colour, the music and dance, the fun and entertainment, the booing and cheering and singing along. RATz is the Angles Theatre’s award winning in-house company that has been putting on pantomimes for many, many years and really knows how to press the right buttons to give you a really fun and enjoyable treat around Christmas time.

winter checks
motoring
"‘Should I fit winter tyres?’ The simple answer is yes, but there’s more to it than that. .”
Prepare your car With November upon us, it’s time to prepare your car for the winter months ahead. A little time spent on your motoring preparations now, will pay dividends in the future. ‘Should I fit winter tyres?’ The simple answer is yes, but there’s more to it. Winter tyres have a different type of tread pattern and rubber compound – they offer a significant improvement in grip in wet conditions and some improvement in traction through snow and slush. Our continental cousins have been fitting winter tyres for years. In the UK winters aren’t as severe, so the benefits are less defined. If you want to maximise safety, and your annual mileage is high, then the answer is probably yes. At the other end of the scale, if your mileage is minimal and you
#41 November 13
don’t want the expense, then maybe it’s a no. Perhaps the way to go for the latter is all season tyres – these offer increased grip but can be left on all year round. Other preparations? Start under the bonnet: the engine coolant should have antifreeze protection down to a minimum of -15°C. Screen wash – buy good quality and mix it up to the maximum recommended concentration. I remember a horrendous journey on the M1 with just water in the washers – the jets were frozen and I tried defrosting them with coffee from service stations! Fully functioning screen washers are great, but if the wipers are on their last legs you’re still not going to see – once again your local garage can help. Whilst I’m talking about wipers, last year I replaced numerous wiper motors/
by Leighten Ball
linkages because owners had turned their wipers on whilst the blades were still frozen to the screen! Make sure that all the lights work and are clean. Ultraviolet damage can causes the lenses of modern plastic headlamps to become opaque –your local specialist can polish the lenses back. How about you and what you take with you? Winter driving is more demanding, so if the weather’s bad make sure you’re rested and leave extra time. If the weather’s really bad, perhaps you should think again? Lastly, carry extras– a hi-vis jacket, a blanket, a shovel and maybe some high energy food – though it beats me how anyone could drive around for any length of time knowing there’s are large bar of chocolate in the boot ready to be eaten… Good luck and stay safe.

Events & Updates Your Future – Your Diss Diss Town Council will be developing a plan for the town for the next few years and it needs your help to do it well. We need to know what the real issues and problems facing the community are and what you would need us to prioritise. What’s good about Diss, what’s not so good, what needs improving and what needs preserving. Councillors and staff can guess at what we think the main issues are and we campaign tirelessly on your behalf to other organisations and authorities or do our best with limited resources to resolve the issues we can. But if we are going to truly represent our community we need you to tell us what the issues really are. Now is the time for you to have a say in the future of your Diss by completing the DissFuture Questionnaire. The questionnaire will be delivered with the Autumn edition of the Diss Matters magazine to all households in Diss, copies will be available from the drop off points below and online at www. disscouncil.com Diss Town Council will gather all the responses, analyse them and use the information to develop a plan to shape the future of Diss. We will report back to you each year on progress of the plan and, as important, report what has not been achieved and why. All completed questionnaires should be dropped off by 30th November to any of the following locations: • Diss Town Council • Diss Tourist Information Office • Diss Library • Diss Youth & Community centre • Diss Health Centre • Diss Mercury Office – 26 Mere Street Alternatively you could post them to Diss Town Council, Council Offices, 11 Market Hill, Diss, Norfolk IP22 4JZ So there are three things we would ask you to do: 1. Complete the questionnaire (either on paper or online) 2. Spread the word – encourage your friends, family and neighbours to complete it. They don’t have to live in Diss, they could be

From Rosedale, with love Staff at Rosedale Funeral Home have been busy all year, wrapping and packing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, the UK’s largest children’s Christmas Appeal. More than 100 shoe boxes have been filled with toys and practical gifts, such as toothbrushes, soap and hand knitted hats and will be hand delivered to children who need them most in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. “We set ourselves a target to try and fill 100 shoe boxes this year,” says Funeral arranger Mark Hall, “and throughout the year, funeral arrangers, directors and pall bearers have brought in their shoe boxes. We have ended up with quite a few over the target because other people in the community heard about what we were doing and have been really kind filling shoe boxes themselves and donating little gifts to be included. The biggest challenge has been ensuring each box has a little hand knitted hat included, as each one takes around 3 hours to complete.” Last year operation Christmas Child delivered over 1.2 million shoe boxes, and Rosedale say they are really proud to
Last year and after eight plus years of organising this large event the market committee stood down for a well earned rest. We were fortunate that a new group of people have taken on this task and so this market is under new management and with that comes new ideas whilst one or two old ones will disappear. The date for this Christmas market is on the last Saturday of November, no change there, but the opening and closing time has altered, it opens at 10am without anyone declaring the market has begun and will close at 2pm. So what has changed then? Well Father Christmas won't be there as he needs to concentrate on working out how many chimneys he has to go down and the church doesn't have one. Secondly children of today have already worked out the story of this guy at a much younger age than we did many years ago.. There will be around 15 stalls spread from inside the church right round to the hall via the usual bright corridor. Come and see for yourselves the great selection of tables for you to do your early Christmas shopping. New to this event will be several short auctions spread over the four hours and in the hall, along with teas and coffees, you can ORDER a lunch, go elsewhere, and it will be ready for when you return - another new idea. There will be the usual easy on the ear music for you to listen to whilst browsing the stalls and a childrens table replacing the old man with the white beard. Also the popular bottle stall will be present and to replace the many raffles there will be a grand tombola. There we are then! an

Events & Updates event not to be missed on 30th of this month and this is the largest church market in Diss another first for the parish of St Mary's. The committee hopes to see as many people there as possible for you will surely enjoy this experience of early gift buying. Gerry Hosking.
Annual Mistletoe Market Christmas is coming and although it is still quite a few weeks away preparations are being carried out all over the place for this wonderful time. Diss Methodist Church members and friends are once again preparing to hold their annual Mistletoe Market in aid of Children’s Charities on Saturday 7th December. This event will be officially opened at 10am by Diss mayor Neil Howard. There will be a diverse variety of stalls, which will include Home Baking, Jams and Preserves, Gifts for the Home, Handicrafts, Books & Puzzles and the ever popular Prize Everytime. There will be two independent stalls, one in aid of the Methodist Relief and Development Fund and the other Save the Children. After having a browse and hopefully purchasing items, you can sit and relax and chat over a cup of tea or coffee and mince pie, cost £1. A two course lunch will also be on offer from 12 o’clock. These will consist of a choice of homemade soup with rolls, and choice of homemade pudding finishing with tea or coffee, all very good value at the cost of £4. The charities to benefit this year will be The Goodwill Children’s Villages in India, which will receive 50% of the proceeds. The remaining 50% will be divided equally between EACH and “Children with Cancer”. Do come and enjoy the lovely atmosphere

of this event and help us raise lots of money for very worthwhile causes that do such a lot to help disadvantaged and seriously ill children, that is the only reward we need for our hard work.
Roydon Ladies Social Group Sheila P and Sheila Coleman are holding a reunion for the Roydon Ladies Social Group. Please bring any memorabilia along, we'd love to see as many friends as possible. On Wednesday 13th November from 2pm in the Barclay Rooms, Roydon Village Hall. Roydon Ladies was first formed over 50 years ago when there was no Social Group for young mothers or working mums. We had speakers, outings, and raised a great deal of money for charities and to build the present Village Hall.
Helping the Community When asked, most members of the public seem to associate Rotary with collecting money for various good causes and, while it is true that fund-raising is a very important aspect of Rotary membership, most recently, we have been in the Market Place in Diss where we were seeking funds to send ShelterBox tents to the Syrian refugee camps, it is not the only way in which Rotary operates. The Rotary motto is “Service above Self” and this means that a very important aspect of the business of the club is “Community Service” whereby the time and effort of our members is translated into something worthwhile for the community. For example, at the beginning of October, a working party of Rotarians set to and cleared and restored the garden of a family where the father has a serious brain disease and other family members have medical problems – this not only improves the lot of the individuals directly concerned but also helps the community at large by improving an eyesore in the midst of other housing. However, the best-known and most evident example of the club working for the community at large is about to take place
once again. Yes, it’s that time of year once more – Christmas is on the horizon and with it, as always comes the Rotary floating Christmas tree. For around 20 years in the run-up to Christmas, Rotarians have gathered at the Mere’s Mouth on a suitable Sunday morning and fitted the donated tree into its floating structure and decorated it with coloured lights and the illuminated Rotary sign. It is then floated into position and weighted down to form part of the town’s illuminations. (One year it was the only illumination that was erected). There have been disasters – the tree capsized in gales last year but it is always out there and is provided completely free. All costs are met from club funds and no charity money is expended. However, the Rotary working party seems to get older each year and could benefit from some younger assistance. If there is anyone who would like to come along and help or who is interested in helping the community in other ways through club membership, please call the Club Secretary on 01379 643371.
