Diss: Town Council News Many of you will have seen news that Doreen Collins was awarded the title of Honoured Citizen of Diss in December by the Town Council in recognition of her contribution to the town as a volunteer for a number of organisations and most recently as Carnival Coordinator. This year there were a total of seven worthy nominees for this award which has brought to mind just how many unsung heroes there actually are in the town who give up their time to help others and to ensure that the many groups and charitable organisations continue to thrive. Examples of some of the volunteer run groups are the Diss Museum, the Corn Hall Trust, the Citizen Advice Bureau, and the Diss and the Waveney Day Centres. There are also a number of groups attached to the churches in the town which carry out work in the community such as DC3, Sports Clubs whose volunteers give up their time to

coach youngsters, organisations such as the Rotary Club who raise large amounts of money for many good causes and the Scout and Guide movement in Diss which provide activities and educations for all ages of children. It would take too long to list all the groups which rely on the work of volunteers but the members of the Town Council (who also are volunteers) would like to acknowledge the work of all these dedicated and inspirational people, who give up their time without seeking any reward to make life for others that little bit better. We hear a lot in the press about creating the Big Society, but this is certainly not a new idea and has been evident in Diss and many other communities for many years. So for everyone involved in volunteering in the town, in whatever way, we would like to say a big thank you and a happy and peaceful 2012.

New Deputy Clerk In Harleston Redenhall with Harleston town council welcomes Keith Mizon as the new deputy clerk. Keith will be a welcome addition to the team based at the leisure centre in Harleston. With a team of twelve staff, including the gym and maintenance, Keith will be taking on the responsibility for managing HR as well as supporting the work of the clerk. Keith lives in Diss and is married with three grown up children and a very newly arrived granddaughter, Imogen. He recently took early retirement following 22 years with Acas, latterly as Director of Individual Dispute Resolution. Keith has over 30 years HR

experience and is looking forward to working locally after long term commuting to London. His interests include: football (as a Suffolk boy by birth, he’s a Tractor Boy, not a Budgie); genealogy (have got the family tree back to 1720s); walking (did the Icelandic Landmannalauger trail in August 2010).

Diss Library

Planning Ahead

Winter nights are just right for reading, whether you read print, ebooks or listen to audio books.

At the beginning of January a very important meeting took place...

You can borrow books including large type, or on cassette or CD from your library or go to the library website www.library. norfolk.gov.uk and download a selection of books onto your ereader, or audio books onto a portable player, from your own home PC. The library supports reading groups with long loans of multiple copies of titles, advice on choices and a dedicated “reading groups” collection. However and whenever you read, you can share your thoughts and get recommendations on new books online by posting reviews and commenting on reviewed books at http:// norfolklibrarybookreviewblog. wordpress.com/ National Libraries Day on Saturday 4th February is a nationwide day to celebrate libraries and give them a

metaphorical Big Hug! For Norfolk libraries it is also the grand finale of our annual Join Up campaign. Your library is open on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm and we have a fantastic Love this Library display; please come and see it and maybe add your own contribution. We will soon be running another Surf ’s Up computer course for the over-50s. These eight-week courses are for anyone, absolute beginner or enthusiastic silver surfer. Our next course will run on eight consecutive Tuesday mornings, starting in February. Please contact the library if you would like a place on this course. Baby Bounce & Rhyme time continues on Fridays at 10.30 am and new faces are assured of a welcome. Contact us on: www.norfolk. gov.uk/libraries or contact your library on 01379 642609

At St Mary’s Church Diss and all those in attendance were the event planners, the catering team and myself as publicity officer and of course the Rector and Curate. We were there to discuss forthcoming planned events for 2012 and what came to light was amazing so much so the notice boards could not take every event. Therefore a system was adopted as to who could have posters and those who would not be lucky as continuous publicity without a break is the wrong way to go. Lunchtime concerts with different artists from previous years, the summer fete,a ‘Big Sing’ special and the Christmas fair will all return again this year plus much, much more. So if you are planning an event at the church and are not booked in you must ring the parish office first between Momday to Friday on (01379) 643789 between 9am to 12 noon. You can all look forward to a year of varied entertainment and if your event cannot be displayed then I will do my best to put it through this magazine. Meanwhile on Saturday 4th February you can enjoy an evening with the Gislingham Silver Band in the church from 7.30pm, tickets are £7.50 from the parish office, enjoy the concert. Gerry Hosking.

Diss U3A

Diss Church people have fond memories of the pageants of 1990 and 2000.

January’s Report

Basil Abbott as Max Miller in the 2000 Diss Church Pageant. Some of the sketches from those shows will be seen again in an afternoon entertainment called Over the Years. This is in the church at 2.30pm on Saturday 18 February. Re-live the hilarious episode when a German officer teaches broad Norfolk to a class of agents before

they are parachuted into East Anglia. He tells them that if they sound their T’s in Norfolk they will be shot as spies, which is why there are places called A’leborough, Wa’on and Old Ca’on. Mrs. Bessington, a mixture of Joyce Grenfell and Margaret Thatcher, welcomes the Americans in the 1940s and urges them to become familiar with our Broads. Pearl and Vera are seen as girls trying to get themselves an American by showing some leg. They are seen again 50 years later wistfully recalling their GI lovers and the way they laughed at the English saying, “You can’t miss it.” If there are enough actors we will perform a new Dad’s Army sketch, with

Wild and windy weather conditions in Diss were an apt accompaniment to guest speaker Roland Buggy’s talk for the new year recalling his visit to Antarctica in 2001. Replying to a newspaper advertisement Roland was able to fulfil a life-long dream to visit this white wilderness. Flying out to the Falkland Islands and transferring to a converted fishing boat Roland was one of 100 hardy travellers who were looking forward to spending a month discovering Antarctica. He illustrated his talk with many photographs of the features and creatures that inhabit this bleak and hostile landscape and which for Roland are a reminder of a never-to-be-forgotten experience. The next meeting of Diss U3A will be held on 2nd February at the United Reformed Church commencing at 10.30am. For further information on Diss U3A please telephone 01379 642674 or visit the Diss U3A website.

Captain Mainwaring’s men looking for a female German spy. MAINWARING: This is no Mata Hari, men. The security and future of our life in these islands could depend on whether or not this desperate woman is caught. WALKER: I like desperate women. Mind you, there’s lots

about, what with all the blokes away at the war. Tickets are £5, including refreshments, from the Parish Office or at the door. The show, presented by Diss Museum, is in aid of the church East Window Fund. Basil Abbott.

Come & Sing The Diss Salvation Army in Sunnyside are organising a Choir Workshop on Saturday 11th February. Joan Spencer is one of the Salvation Army’s leading choral trainers and until recently was deputy choir leader of the renowned International Staff Songsters who visited Diss in 2009. Ebenezer Cottage After 26 years, working in insurance for Norwich Union Liz found herself spending more and more time away from home, living out of a suitcase.

Weekends were her only respite and chance to shake away the stresses of commuting. This time was spent tending the gardens at Ebenezer Cottage and walking in the countryside around Bunwell. It was during her long walks that Liz noticed the abundance of fruits that were in the hedgerows and the trees all around herBlackberries, crab Apples, Sloes and Rosehips to name a few. After talking things through with her partner John. Liz took the plunge and left the stability of her well paid job to set-up her new enterprise “Ebenezer Cottage”. Using recipes handed down through the family Liz now makes an extensive range of traditional countryside chutneys, jams, jellys, pickles, marmalades and cordials. Liz sells through many local shops and can also be found at many local craft fairs and farmers markets. In visiting Liz at the Attleborough Town Hall Crafters Fair you will also be able to see her latest products-a delightful range of cottage garden toiletriesall handmade with fragrances

that immediately evoke the smells and sights of a traditional cottage garden-Lavender, Honeysuckle, English Rose and Lemon Verbena. Ebenezer Cottage has now been in business for three years and Liz’s only regret is she never started out on her own sooner. Liz is very proud of how she has managed to develop her business and her recent successes which include providing the preserves for Holkham Hall, being featured in a new book-Norfolk Food Hero’s - and being a keen member of Produced in Norfolk. Meet Liz at the following events: • Attleborough Town Hall Crafters • Blooms of Bressingham Farmers Market • Weyborune Producers Market • Produced in Norfolk Farmers Market @ Wroxham Barns

Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society The Magic of Christmas Bertie Pearce, Inner Magic Circle. Within seconds of starting the Christmas lecture to Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society (Diss DFAS), Bertie Pearce had enthralled and amazed his audience. This comprehensive history and art appreciation presentation on “Wonderworkers and the Art of Illusion” was also a tour de force of pure variety show. In covering 4000 years of the history of illusion he thrilled the audience of more than a hundred members and remained one step ahead with his quick comedy and baffling stagecraft. Constantly involving the audience in the illusions and skilled “magic”, Bertie also maintained a clear thread of the story of Wonderworkers from Seneca’s description 2000 years ago of the cup and balls trick through to the TV displays of Darren Brown today. A wonderful pre-Christmas treat it was captured in his final quote from the American magician, Doug Henning, “The art of the magician is to create a sense of wonder. If we leave with a sense of wonder our lives become filled with joy”... and we still did not know how he did it! After the lecture members enjoyed the traditional Christmas wine and mince pies among the buzz of excitement from a great performance. The February lecture for Diss DFAS is on Tuesday, 21 February 2012 when Diane Lloyd will be speaking on English Art Deco Ceramics: Clarice Cliff, Susie Cooper and Ruskin. New members are always welcome to try the experience of our high standard lectures – just come along for Two O’clock on that Tuesday.

Attleborough, Diss, Harleston & High Suffolk Rotary events over the Christmas period have now been completed. The Diss club launched its Christmas tree onto the Mere for the enjoyment of the town’ residents although disaster struck when the high winds overturned both tree and raft. The High Suffolk club braved five winter nights to take their Santa Sleigh around Eye, Stradbroke, Debenham and Framlingham collecting £2000 for East Anglian Children’s Hospice (EACH). R.C. of Harleston, with their town centre collections raised £1000 for East Anglian Air Ambulance & the Alzheimer’s Society. The members of all the Clubs wish to thank everyone who has supported us so generously, not only at Christmas, but throughout 2011. But, it is not just at Christmas that Rotarians are out and about in the community. Most charities are formed for a specific purpose: Rotary does not. What is Rotary trying to achieve? Quite simply its overarching aim is to change people’s lives. Where and

how it does this is diverse. For twenty years Rotary has been at the forefront, both financially and hands-on, of the programme to eliminate polio worldwide. Now there are only four countries reporting a small number of cases. That is changing people’s lives. • ShelterBox, a charity initiated by a Rotary Club, supported by Rotary funding and Rotarian voluntary help, immediately sent a support team and 5,000 ShelterBoxes to the earthquake stricken areas of Turkey. Each provides essential items for shelter, warmth and clean water for ten people. 50,000 people benefited. That is changing people’s lives. • Rotary clubs raise funds for many local charities helping them in their essential work. Through them Rotary is again helping to change people’s lives. • Rotary has a number of projects helping young people to widen

their experience, raise their life skills, and bolster their confidence. That is changing their lives. • The voluntary work that Rotarians do in their community helps to make a more pleasant environment for its residents. That, perhaps, in a small way is changing people’s lives. Whether a street collection or an organised event no administration fees are taken by either Rotary or Rotarians. What you give is what they get. Who are the men and women who call themselves Rotarians? Look at any disparate group of people and you would probably be looking at a Rotarian. Look in the mirror and you could possibly be seeing one there. Why do Rotarians do it? Rotary has a motto ‘Service above self ’.

• When using one’s life-skills in a less stressful environment there is a satisfaction in helping others who are less fortunate. • Meeting regularly fellowship grows into new friendship with like-minded but disparate men and women. • An interesting mix of talks, visits and social activities is a feature at all clubs • Rotary is family orientated; partners and friends are always welcome and involved club activities. • Rotary is a world-wide family; one is always welcomed to any club anywhere. • Rotary is fun. • Becoming a Rotarian could help change your life. New members will help us to change even more people’s lives. For more information contact: Rtn. J. Gibbons on 01379 854 895. Or visit www.ribi.org.

Turkish Delight Here, Sarah Veness reviews Turkuaz Restaurant, the newest place to dine out in Diss...

Anyone who’s ever been to Turkey will know that Turkish hospitality is second to none. And this is certainly the case at Turkuaz Restaurant on Victoria Road in Diss. From the second my friends and I stepped through the door we were made to feel welcome. The owners were warm and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. As we browsed the menu, we were given olives and chillis to munch on which was a lovely touch. And the tiny details that make the difference between a

good restaurant and an exceptional one, kept on coming. All of Turkuaz’s starters are served with homemade bread which was particularly tasty. For my starter I chose the Mitite Kofte which was minced lamb with onions and herbs, cooked on a charcoal grill. It was really tasty and the portion size was just right. For my main course I had Iskender, lamb again but this time with cubes of pitta bread and covered in yoghurt and a special sauce. It was very tasty and certainly big enough to see me struggling by the end! But it still didn’t stop me from ordering Baklava for dessert. This filo pastry dessert stuffed with pistachio and honey has always been a holiday favourite of mine so I was very pleased to see it on the menu.

We were also given a beautifully presented fruit salad with our desserts that was another charming touch. Turkuaz caters well both for vegetarians and meat eaters with a range of fish dishes too. They also offer a series of meze dishes which give you a chance to sample lots of

Ask the Chef!

Chocolate Mousse With Fruits Of Th e Forest Ingredien

Dear Ross, What is the secret to a perfect soufflé? - Mrs. L Vincent.

ts 250 g dark chocola te 5 eggs separated 100g granulated su gar 175g melted butter Pinch of salt Selection of your fav ourite berries 100g caster sugar 50 ml water

For the perfect soufflé the secret is not only the recipe but the handling and serving of it. First you should be careful when handling it as they’re very prone to dropping if even slightly knocked, next they have to be served right away - from the oven to the table is the best way. Always butter and sugar your moulds as well, temperature can vary from oven to oven. For a real show stopper I would go for a lemon and passion fruit or chocolate soufflé. Light, yet intense flavour. Chocolate souffle: Ingredients • 200g dark chocolate • 150g butter • 6 eggs • 175g sugar • 125g plain flour 1. Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Butter 6 medium ramekins. Melt the chocolate with the butter in a bowl over simmering water or in a microwave. Beat the eggs with the sugar until they are very light and fluffy and then fold in the flour. Fold in the chocolate mixture. 2. Divide between the ramekins. Bake for 8-12 minutes, the soufflés should rise and form a firm crust but you want then still to be slightly runny in the middle. Serve with cream. Enjoy...

1. Melt the chocola te together with th e butter. Whisk the egg white and pinch of salt until it holds its peaks. 2. Next whisk the egg yolks and suga r until they increase in size an d turn white. Mix th e chocolate and egg yolk mixture to gether. Now careful ly fold in the meringue mix. Mak ing sure its fully in co rporated. I have used a self-for med chocolate tea r dr op but you can use a nice wine glass.

Competition!

3. Place your prep ared berries into a sauce pan with the caster sugar an d water. Gently sim mer for 10 mins or until the water ha s reduced and taken on the berry colours and flavour s.

You could win Sunday lunch for two at The Bell Inn, just by sending your food question in for Ross to answer! Send your question along with your name, address and daytime phone number to Ask the Chef, Your Local Magazine, 3 Hales Yard, Diss, IP22 4AF or email design@yourlocalmagazine.net. Whatever your food query, Ross can help!

I Collect... Model Soldiers There is a large hobby devoted to collecting both old and new models.

These aren’t to be confused with the bag of 50 for £1 you can pick up from some toy shops but are highly detailed and made of metal, resin or plastic and tend to be 15-30mm in size. There is an abundance of manufactures, specialist magazines and even exhibitions to cater for this popular pastime. Perhaps a slightly less obvious angle to collecting, this hobby is as much about model making as it is about collecting. Each model is bought, constructed and then painted, some of which can take hours to complete. With thousands of models from a variety of manufacturers there is a vast selection available. Most collectors will specialize in a particular army or era. Whole armies can be built up over time making some amazing displays, and can be from the world of fantasy with orcs, goblins and

elves, historical with WWII armoured divisions or futuristic models, there is plenty of variety to choose from. Whole armies can be built up or just single models collected and displayed in dioramas. While some good displays can be made from completed figures, collecting models soldiers differs from most other collections in that there is always the option that they can be used once they have been completed – enter the world of table-top wargames. Pioneered by H.G. Wells in his 1913 book Little Wars wargames has grown into a popular pastime. Amongst the most popular manufacturers are Games Workshop and Flames of War, although a search on the internet will bring up plenty of different manufacturers. Interested in Wargames? Looking for something different to do on a cold Sunday afternoon? Something that doesn’t involve a computer? Well miniature wargaming could well be what you are looking for! No longer the vestiture of old fogeys and sad ‘uns playing with toy soldiers our monthly meetings have a good splattering of all ages including Uni students, school kids, parents and adults. Now in it’s seventh year the Old Buckenham Bone Crushers Wargames Club meet at Old Buckenham

Village Hall, usually on the first Sunday of the month. The club currently has over 20 members with ages ranging from 12 to 50+ but are always on the look out for new members, young or not so young. The club is held in a friendly admosphere with the emphasis being placed on having fun and not taking the games too seriously. Some of the gaming systems played can be complicated but there is always someone on hand to give advice and beginners (young and old) are welcome. There is a good splattering of

gaming systems played including Games Workshop Fantasy (dwarves, elves, orks, goblins and worse) and 40k (futuristic battles), BloodBowl (a form of American Football where anything goes) as well as the more conventional Flames of War (World War II) and the occasional zombie game. Expense can be seen as a drawback to wargaming, but some of our games can be played with just a handful of models and, with the rise of ebay, collecting has become a lot cheaper. In the short term models can be borrowed during the meetings if you

want to give it a try. Wargames can be an interesting and challenging hobby, a combination of chess like tactics combined with dice rolling where you move units around and combat each other with the roll of a dice. But there is much more to the hobby than just battling. There is the making of scenery and the painting and finishing of the models to collecting and assembling whole armies whether it be goblin hordes, futuristic Space Marines or 2nd World War Panzer platoons. There is an age limit of 12, those under 12 must be accompanied by a parent. Cost is £2.00 for members (£3.50 non-members) there are snacks available. First visit is free. Membership is currently £5 per year. Email paul@greystokegraphics. co.uk. or call Paul on 01953 860023. Meetings start at 2pm with a 5pm finish for the under 14s and a 6pm finish for those 14 and over. Five Reasons Why Hypnosis Can Help You To Have A Happy New Year 1. Hypnosis isn’t scary. It’s completely natural, has been around since the beginning of time and we all go in and out of hypnosis in our everyday lives all day long. For example, how often have you been driving along and realised that you don’t remember travelling part of the journey? That’s because you’d naturally gone into hypnosis. 2. You remain in complete control whilst you’re in hypnosis... you won’t be asked to cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog! That only happens at stage hypnosis shows, not in a hypnosis clinic. 3. Hypnosis works deep down in your subconscious mind, making changes that you’ve been unable to make on a conscious level. 4. Hypnosis is well known for helping people to stop smoking or lose weight, but did you know it can help you to relieve stress and

18

anxiety too? It can also help you to overcome fears, phobias and habits, relieve pain, sleep more soundly and help with many other issues as well. 5. Clinical hypnotherapy is approved of by the British Medical Association, and has been since the 1950s...and it really isn’t scary! Imagine making all the changes you want to make whilst simply enjoying wonderful, deep relaxation. If you’d like any further information about how hypnotherapy can help you, call your Harley Street trained clinical hypnotherapist, Lynda Scrivener, for a no-obligation chat today. Fitness Pilates Pilates is one of the most sought after fitness programmes of the 21st century, suitable for any age or level of fitness.

So what is Fitness Pilates? Fitness Pilates combines “classic” Pilates technique with remedial exercises to offset postural problems offering a complete work-out for the body that exercises not just the main muscle groups, but the weaker, less-used muscles too. This in turn will compliment and enhance any current exercise programme, keeping mind and body working in harmony. And what can Fitness Pilates do for you? Through Pilates based exercises you can increase muscular balance and strength and also improve posture.

Fitness Pilates focuses on strengthening the centre by teaching the mind and body to recruit “core muscles”, coupled with stretching exercises which are used to lengthen tight muscles, so you can achieve a longer, leaner look and a great shape without creating muscle “bulk”. Fitness Pilates offers simplified alternatives to “classic” Pilates and offers a whole body workout that challenges your body like no other exercise. Classes will be running in 6-week course blocks from January 2012. Places will be limited, so if you are interested or would like more details, please contact Linda Mellor-Steedman on 07759 886777 or e-mail me at cactus.linda@supanet.com www.bodyworkout.biz

New Opticians For Long Stratton For the first time in over 10 years, Long Stratton is pleased to welcome its very own opticians.

M Shepherd Optometrist opened in January at new premises on the main road through the town. Husband and wife team, Michael and Helen Shepherd run the practice with the help of Helen’s mum Judy. Michael has over 13 years experience as an optometrist with a leading prestigious practice in East Anglia. Wife Helen manages the practice with Judy helping on reception. “We’re a real family business,” says Michael. “We’re also local and it’s really exciting to be able to open a new business in Long Stratton where there is a real need.”

22

Based in a new complex of five shops between The Chip Inn and The Wishing Tree, M Shepherd is the first business to open, although all five shops have been filled. With parking directly outside and step-free access, the site is ideal. “By February, we should hopefully be able to start seeing NHS patients and we already have a list of people wanting to book appointments,” says Michael. “We want people to know that we’re here and that they’re very welcome to drop in and see us.” If you’re looking for straightforward advice, a comprehensive eye examination, an extensive range of standard and designer frames and sunglasses and contact lenses - not to mention a warm welcome - give them a visit. M Shepherd Optometrist is open Tuesday to Friday 9-5pm and Saturdays from 9-1pm. For more information, pop into the practice or look online at www.mshepherdoptom.co.uk.

Shaping The Future Of Long Stratton - Next Steps South Norfolk Council is pouring over the hundreds of responses of residents to its consultation on shaping the future of Long Stratton. The consultation on the Long Stratton Area Action Plan launched at the end of August last year, concluded in mid November. In that time, there was a public meeting at the High School led by South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon which was well attended. In all, the Council sent out 3000 leaflets to homes and received 560 responses - just under 20% and one of the best response rates so far. It underlined the interest of Long Stratton residents in their community, and their commitment to see it improved. The Plan considers all aspects of improving village life from the bypass to its local facilities. The Council wants to consider - with residents – how to help create a community where more people can and want to live, work, shop

and spend more of their leisure time. On day to day activities, the Council is considering encouraging people living and working in Long Stratton and the nearby villages to use local facilities rather than travelling to Norwich or elsewhere. It would also like to make Long Stratton a place where a larger number of people choose to walk and cycle. The next stage of the process for the Council - when it has gone through all the responses is to publish what it will call the Long Stratton Area Action Plan Preferred Options paper, and again open it to consultation. This paper will contain indications of where the bypass might go, options for improving the centre of the village, and for the first time, the preferred

areas for the development of the village. It will be an indication of what local people want to see happen to their community in the next 15 years, including what facilities they want to see and what improvements they would like. It is unlikely to be sent to every home, but South Norfolk Council will publicise the paper and ensure it is available for people to engage with, including holding an exhibition of its contents in the village. Again, following that consultation a further version - taking on board community comments - will be sent to the Department of Communities and Local Government Secretary of State, for the Government’s view, with again, local people being consulted.

The district council hopes to have the final version of the area action plan adopted in 2013, the blueprint for the future of the village up to 2026. Wymondham has just begun the same journey to the creation of its own area action plan, with a public meeting chaired by Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman on 20 January. The consultation takes the form of a survey which can be filled in at www.south-norfolk. gov.uk/wymondham. It can also be filled in and then posted to Planning and Housing Policy, South Norfolk Council, Swan Lane, Long Stratton, NR15 2XE. And it can be filled in and left at Wymondham Town Council’s offices in Middleton Street. The survey closing date is Friday 16 March 2012.

Extreme Knitting If you enjoy knitting, why not take it to the next level as one of ‘Your Local Magazine’ readers has been explaining. I was curious being a keen knitter myself and have tried to find out a bit more. Extreme knitting is an accelerated method of hand knitting using 3-200 strands of wool simultaneously. The idea is that mixing so many strands together you can blend many colours and types of wools together to create a unique piece of fabric on a large scale . You can knit pieces in a matter of hours or days but you will require extra large needles of around 24 mm x 700mm. However the results are apparently amazing and hard wearing. It can be fun and certainly challenging to create such large scale knitted items for things like throws, pictures, rugs and wall hangings. I wondered if any of our readers have taken up this craft and if so could they get in touch

and tell us more. So if this is a technique that you use, or know someone who does, let us know or send us some pictures. Your Local Magazine, Craft News 01379 652330 or email jean@yourlocalmagazine.net

Is Your Home Dressed For Romance? A romantic room scheme isn’t just for valentines it can be a calm relaxing sanctuary for the whole year. Romance conjures up the thought of flowers, nature and nostalgia

With ‘Vintage’ still a big trend in interiors its very easy to pick up bits and pieces to create the look in your home. The look is very versatile and works equally well in any room in the home. A fresh coat of paint can give an instant lift to a room. Soft pastel shades are perfect for vintage inspired interiors-creams, baby blue, soft pink and grey are perfect. Grey is a particular favourite at the moment and The Little Greene paint company’s paint in French Grey is their best seller. If you are looking to change your curtains

28

there’s lots of lovely prints to choose from, many by British designers such as the ‘Garden Birds’ design by Louise Body that our client chose, we made the pelmet that little bit more luxurious by adding a braid and large coordinating tassels in the corners. By choosing a less expensive plain fabric for the curtains we were able to add plenty of fullness and interlining to make them feel really sumptuous. Well-made neutral curtains are a great investment as you can easily update your colour scheme by changing the pelmet and tiebacks. If you have seating in the room, deep buttoned upholstery adds structure to the room and look very smart, adding wool throws in different patterns adds texture and makes a chair or sofa look more inviting. To complete the look, add a candle and wait for the roses to arrive… We have a selection of home accessories such as the ‘love’ sign that we have used in our newly wed clients luxury vintage bedroom in our showroom at Three Gates Farm, Fen Street, Bressingham, Diss IP22 2AQ.

What Do Wills, Powers Of Attorney, And Pre-Paid Funeral Plans All Have In Common? Many people would say money, but it’s really all about LOVE and KINDNESS. If you think about it, Wills, Funeral Plans, and LPAs seem illogical: You give up some of your money now, to benefit someone else when you are no longer with us! Why? Because you care about someone else! Without these arrangements in place, just imagine the stress, the hassle and the heartache you will leave for your family. No Will and there are family arguments about who gets what, plus there’s the probate to sort out. No LPA and there will be frozen bank accounts and the Court of Protection to face. Who would want to put their family through

the ordeal of having to pick out a coffin, and arrange a funeral service? It’s your death not theirs, you sort it out before you leave! It is true that many of us have put off arranging these things because we didn’t understand them, couldn’t afford them or both. Now you have no such excuses as Newleaf Will Writers have significantly reduced the cost of Wills and LPAs, and our step by step guides make them easy to understand. No matter how many excuses you have for not arranging these matters, not one of them will be of any help your family! Garry Streeter – Newleaf Will Writers 01953 451930.

Don’t Fear Equity Release Keep Yer Heel Down Bor! …. Make It Work For You!

Equity release products have never been better, and right now it is making a significant difference to thousands of retirements. But it’s not right for everyone. But when it is, it can help pay off debts, improve income, allow you to help your kids, pay for holidays and home improvements to name but a few. But to make it work for you, you need to approach it in the right way. From my 13+ years as a specialist in equity release I have learned that most householders (and many advisers!) start at the wrong point, focus on the wrong

issues and rarely ask the right questions. I’ve seen this result in doing equity release when it wasn’t warranted, losing benefits unnecessarily or ending up with the wrong type of plan. All of this can be avoided if you: 1. Take your time 2. Be absolutely certain of your financial need 3. Be realistic about your property value. 4. Involve family. 5. Take only experienced, independent, “whole of market” advice. 6. Ensure that all advice is in writing and includes the reasons for the recommendation. 7. Ensure that you attend to Will and Power of Attorney needs where necessary. Garry Streeter - Equity Release Specialist 01953 451930

A ‘slightly on the huh’ look at gardening Wotcha! I always get caught out by the the new year racing in, and now we’re halfway through January and not a seed sown! Sweet Peas and tomatoes COULD be in by now, although I know there’s no rush. ‘Keep Calm and Come In’ says the writing on a doormat I saw outside Harriet’s Home & Garden today. Good advice. I think I’ll stick to cress for the time being. Ah, cress, delicious with marmite (I ought to charge a fee for all this name dropping!), and you can sow it indoors on practically anything. Jean, (editor of this magazine), told me the story of her teacher at Tivetshall Primary who sowed cress on her knickers. Clean ones I suppose. I can’t remember if Jean said the class ate the cress afterwards or not. Her teacher was mustard at teaching probably because both Jean and Michael Wynn-Jones were in the class. I’m just doing my seed order – can’t finish it as I need to check what seeds I have left over – hope I’m not the only one who does that. I’ve kept seed orders going back 33yrs, when a packet of basic seeds, ie beetroot, was 17p. Now they are 85p, an increase over those years of 500%! Have wages gone up that much? I don’t think so as that would be a 15% increase year on year! Dig this: Most seed catalogues give you the number of seeds in a packet; this is as important as the price. Also watch out for ‘threefold’ packets of popular varieties – this tells you two things – (1) there’s a reason that variety is popular and, (2) they are good value for money. Looking For A New Garage For Quality Service & Repair? There are many choices to be made when selecting a new garage to service and repair your car, but the good news is that even for new car owners there’s now much more choice out there. Once upon a time, only main dealers were authorised to service new cars during their warranty period – if the car went elsewhere, the guarantee would be invalidated. The powers that be in Europe viewed this as restrictive practise, and in October 2003 new legislation came into force giving motorists much more freedom in their decision as to who should look after their cars. So what does this mean? Well, if you own a vehicle that is still covered by the manufacturers own warranty, then you no longer have to have it serviced at a main dealer to preserve the warranty. It is now perfectly acceptable to take your car to a quality independent garage with qualified technicians who use

the manufacturers servicing data and matching quality parts – its part of European law! But how to choose a quality independent garage? Personal recommendation is always a great start, but the internet is great too. The Unipart Car Care Centre network can be found at uccc. co.uk – just put your post code in & the search engine will find your nearest garage. All the work carried out by Unipart Car Care Centres is covered by their unique 12 month, 12,000 mile Nationwide Warranty. More than that, all the Unipart Car Care Centres are audited and monitored under the Motor Industry Code of Practise (Office of Fair Trading approved), and just like when checking out a holiday destination on ‘Trip Advisor’ you check the garage’s on-line feedback at motorcodes.co.uk. Happy Searching! Leighten Ball, GM Autotech.
