Two Charities benefit from Mayor’s Fundraising.
New Owners of Your Local Magazine:
Wendy and Ben Aiken
We are Ben and Wendy Aiken who many of you will know. Our fathers have had a huge part in us getting to where we are now. Ben’s father is Mark Aiken, former delivery manager at Royal Mail Diss and now delivery manager for Dayburst Couriers. My dad was John Lucas of Partridge and Lucas of Eye, formerly an Eye councillor and Mayor, amongst many other things. Ben and I are the new owners of Circuit Media / Your Local Magazine. Ben is a graphic designer of Ben Aiken Creative Design and I am Wendy of Wendy Aiken Photography (to see examples of my work please see page 20, and throughout this magazine).

Former Town Mayor Graham Minshull is delighted to announce that he has raised a total of £2,443.65 for his chosen charities during his term of office. The charities benefitting from the fundraising were The Muscular Dystrophy Association and The Royal Anglian Regiment Benevolent Charity. Usually funds raised for the Town Mayor’s charities would be split evenly down the middle. However on this occasion, because of the awarding of the Freedom of the Town, a bucket collection was held on the day of the Parade for the Regiment’s Benevolent Fund and their own collection boxes have been in outlets around the town throughout Graham’s Mayoral year. A total of £1,703.65 was been raised for this charity including nearly £1,000 on the day from the bucket collection. Funds for the Muscular
Dystrophy Association have come from other fundraising sources including the Christmas Carol Concert and a total of £740.00 was raised for this charity which was presented to a representative from the Association at the reception following the Annual Council Meeting in May. The cheque for The Royal Anglian Regiment Benevolent Charity was presented to Major General Phil Jones, Colonel of The Regiment at a Beating the Retreat Ceremony held on 1st June at The Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, Ipswich (see picture). Because of the immense gratitude shown by The Regiment for this donation and the fantastic level of support from the people of Diss and surrounding area to the soldiers when the Freedom of the Town was granted, Graham is continuing to raise funds for the Charity. There will be a street collection in the Market Place on Friday 26th July and Saturday 27th July. Donations can also be sent to the Council offices, cheques payable to: Diss Town Council Town Mayor’s Charities.

Diss Museum's Airship Project
The Top Ten Hymns of Diss

See the Diss Community Partnership website for details of an airship weekend next May. This is a tourism initiative between Diss Museum, the Pulham Pennoyer Centre and the Park Hotel. We are planning airship events leading up to a centenary commemoration of the R34 airship's historic double Atlantic crossing in 1919. The airship took off from East Fortune in Scotland flew to Long Island and back to Pulham. So we have been in touch with the Scottish National Museum of Flight, the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island and the
Pulham Pennoyer Centre to create a triangular partnership. The response has been encouraging. We had a supportive message from the museum at Spitsbergen, near the Arctic circle. There they commemorate the Norge and Italia airships, both of which visited Pulham. Last year we ran a partnership project with Thorpe Abbotts, Horham and Knettishall airfield associations, including a son-etlumiere at the 100th Bomb Group Museum at Thorpe Abbotts. The airfields and airship station are an important part of our local history. The skies must once have been alive with American bombers and, in earlier days, awesome airships like the R33 and R34. The R101 came over Diss Church School, my Dad saw the Norge and there is still a local lady, Kay Nelson, who saw the R33. Basil Abbott.
With all that's going on at Diss parish church this summer we must not over look Diss town and communities 'THE BIG SING' on Sunday 11th August 6.30pm. It is unbelievable this popular event is now in its 9th year and is very much enjoyed by so many people some who travel quite a distance to swell the numbers that attend. Following last years rather comical and energetic occasion, to match the nations celebrations we return to the top ten requested hymns in a top ten format as usual. To help make this evening very enjoyable we have as every year the Diss Salvation Army Band, Organ and Choir and not forgetting Yourselves singing every hymn. The top 10 is made up of the number of votes for the same hymn thus the top hymn will have attracted the
most votes. If you would like to request a favourite hymn and do not attend any church then please take your requests to the TOURIST INFORMATION shop by the mere. We more than welcome non church going people as well as those who attend any church in the area along with visitors to the town. This year we will be supporting the QUIDENHAM CHILDRENS HOSPICE where our collection will go to. So if you are a regular fan or someone who's never attended before then do come along to St. Mary's Parish Church on August 11th and I guarantee you will leave with your spirits raised, something that is much needed in our nation and indeed throughout the world at this present time. How would you like to join one of the most dynamic organisations in South Norfolk? We have great displays, we run projects, we raise money for renovations, we celebrate festivals, we give talks, tours and presentations. But our current Collections person, Alison Molnos, is retiring. She admits that she didn't know a thing about museums, having been a languages teacher. But she learned and has been a mainstay of Diss Museum. Before she goes she is willing to pass on her knowledge and expertise to a new person. They would learn how to acquisition, catalogue and store new items and how to look after the existing collection. Whom would it suit? It could be a retired teacher, or someone who has had some experience in museums. It might be
a Mum who has some time during the day, now that the kids are a bit older, and wants to use her brain again. It could be a young person who already has a part-time job but would like to spend fulfilling time working with a huge and fascinating collection. We have everything from weapons and uniforms to fossils and vintage photographs. The post need not be too timeconsuming. A couple of mornings a week is all that it would require. You could choose your days and times. Whether studying an old ledger or handling a Bronze Age dagger, for an intelligent person with a love of local history, this is a plum occupation. Peter trained as a cabinet maker for 20 years when he started up Bowmans Homeworks which has now been in business for 10 years. The Rotary Club of Diss and District A new year begins. “Proms in the Park” that the club has organised for many years. The past year has seen the club pass on over £12,000 to various relief programmes and charities. The largest individual sum has seen sufficient funds passed on to WheelPower, the charity that organises the provision of sports wheelchairs for Paralympic athletes, to allow the purchase of a complete chair. Local people have benefitted from the provision of a competitionstandard table tennis table complete with bats and balls for the Youth and Community Centre as well as small donations to initiatives within the town. Success attracts success and the club’s membership has increased over the year as people are drawn to Rotary’s unique mix of community service with fun and fellowship. Anyone interested in taking part in the club’s activities should call the Secretary on 01379 643371.
The Rotary year, unlike the calendar, runs from July 1st to June 30th so this is the time of the year when the Rotary Club of Diss passes on the running of the club from one set of officers to another. The presidency of the club has just been passed from Keith Day, a well-known local architect, to James Laband, a partner in Jackaman’s Solicitors in Diss. Keith is on the right in the accompanying photograph. The past year has been a very successful one for the club with high-profile events such as a Queen tribute night in the Corn Hall, the Art Exhibition in May and, just recently, the new format “Park Alive” event that took over from

Ensemble Cast Bring Literary Classic To The Stage.
A moving story of love and passion set against the backdrop of one of the globe’s worst conflicts is being brought to the stage at Norwich Theatre Royal. The first ever touring production of Sebastian Faulks classic Birdsong is visiting the city from July 8-13 and promises to convey the extreme emotions of those caught up in the Great War. The production follows young Englishman Stephen Wraysford who embarks on a passionate and

dangerous affair. As war breaks out, he faces leading his men through the danger and horror of the trenches and the Battle of the Somme. His memories of his French lover are all that sustain him. The production features a strong ensemble company which includes Sarah Jayne Dunn (Mandy in Hollyoaks), Charlie G Hawkins (Darren in EastEnders) and Arthur Bostrom of ‘Allo ‘Allo fame, as well as giving newcomer Jonathan Smith his first major dramatic part in the key role of Stephen Wraysford. It also boasts a strong creative team being co-produced by the critically acclaimed Original Theatre Company and written by

Rachel Wagstaff, who is currently working on two other screenplays with Birdsong writer Sebastian Faulks. “Given the approaching centenary and the passing away of Harry Patch, the last surviving British Army Veteran to have

Youngsters can build their own mini model aircraft, with a prize at the end for 'best in show', and there are educational displays explaining how the motors work for those budding enthusiasts. Beautiful Wymondham A fine market town. An historic market town nestled in the Norfolk countryside, Wymondham is famous locally for it's prestigious College and its most famous son, Robert Kett. Less than 10 miles from Norwich it is situated on the main A11 from Norwich to London. Today, it is dotted with historic buildings, shops, pubs and cafes and has a peaceful rural feel. But over 450 years ago it wasn't quite such a quiet place.

In 1549, Kett led a rebellion of peasants and farmers in protest at the enclosure of common land. With a force of virtually unarmed men he held the city of Norwich for six weeks before suffering defeat at the hands of the King's Army. He was hanged from Norwich Castle for his crime. Wymondham once again came to attention when a Great Fire broke out on June 11th 1615 - over 300 properties were destroyed including the Market Cross, the vicarage, the town hall and the schoolhouse.

During the Second World War, Wymondham was home to one of MI6's Radio Security Service direction finding stations. The current Market Cross now used as a Tourist Information Centre was built after the Great Fire between 1617-1618 at a cost of ÂŁ25. Repairs in 1989 cost a staggering ÂŁ95,000! Wymondham Abbey - with its famous twin towers - was founded in 1107 and has been continually adapted over the centuries. Wymondham College is the largest state boarding school in the
country with up to 700 boarding spaces and has been open since 1951. The building had previously been used as a military hospital during the war, followed by a teaching training establishment. Today it provides an excellent education for its pupils. All in all, Wymondham is a great place for a day out, afternoon tea or to enjoy a stroll along its narrow medieval streets. Browse the shops, stop for a drink in a Tudor pub or eat dinner in one of its restaurants.

The local church and the local arts group have got together to create the annual flower festival in the church and churchyard for the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, 20th and 21st July, this year. To be called Arts and Flowers. There will be an art exhibition in the Church involving paintings and a variety of other hand made creations each of which will inspire its own special explosion of flowers. The flowers will be arranged by the Mellis team of flower arrangers headed up by Betty Wells, supported and inspired as they have been for many years by Melissa and Christine of Fleurs Artisan in Eye. MellisArts is a small but talented group whose skills embrace stained glass making by Surinda Warboys and Hilary Beale. Valerie Hall creates intricate quilts and batik prints of Mellis wildlife and landscapes, Ruth Manly makes beautiful collages for all ages; Laurence Hall builds bespoke guitars and Ghed Paterson’s fantasy easyrider really is a one-off! Frances Beasley will be showing flower and animal paintings along with Roy James, Susan Adcock and Kay Lucas. Judith Battersby makes elegant ceramics. Peter Swaffer paints atmospheric interior and exterior landscapes and Sally Tyley prints beautiful abstracts on fabric and Sarah Swaffer knits speciality pieces to order . Add to this the exquisite painting of Phil Cunningham, the life paintings by
Angela Lee and the charismatic photographs of Vincent Sneath: all enhanced by the magic of flowers. A very special show comprising talent and expertise and well worth a visit. Outside in the churchyard will be an avenue of stalls including bric a brac, home made cakes and preserves and a wonderful collection of garden plants and accessories. Morning coffee and cream teas will be served all day. The Mellisians, acapella singers, will be giving a recital of their latest works and there will also be singalong hymns on the organ by request in the afternoons.
For a great day out for all the family, head down to Yaxley Village Hall and green for the Yaxley Fete on July 14th. Open from 12-5pm, the BBQ will be up and running from the start so why not head down for lunch. Alongside the tasty BBQ, refreshments include a Licensed bar provided by the Cherry Tree Public House with tea and cakes, strawberries and cream and even a Popcorn Van! But it's not just about the food…there's plenty to keep the whole family amused
including an air rifle range, crockery smash, target petanque, target golf, bowling for the pig, a raffle, tombola and cake stall. There will also be several arts and craft related stalls including a free Woodcraft stand for the kids. In the central 'arena' Gislingham Silver Band, a dog show, kids sports and a gymnastic display from Mellis School will be entertaining the crowds. They also hope to have a visit from the new off-road Police quad bike! So head down and join in the fun.
The following weekend, 27th and 28th July, MellisArts will be inviting everyone to their OPEN STUDIOS - maps and directions will be available at the Flower Festival or in the Tavern. If you have been inactive for a while, you may want to start with less strenuous exercise programmes which include treadmill walking or cycling at a comfortable pace. Beginning at a slow pace will allow you to become physically fit without straining your body. Once you are in better shape, you can gradually do more strenuous activity. Some of the benefits of exercise: 1. Reduce body fat levels 2. Reduce overall body weight 3. Increase in muscle tone 4. Decrease aches & pains especially lower back pain 5. Reduce stress levels 6. It’s time to take stock and increase our exercise levels to improve on all of the above as well as preventing diseases and improving our quality of life. Exercise participation is for all of all abilities and can be adapted to suit your current fitness level and ability, also exercise can be undertaken if you

Why would you not want to start burning some of those excess calories, improving your muscle tone and strengthening your muscles? The gym is not full of perfectly shaped, athletic people with the latest gym wear but full of people who want to maintain their health, improve their health and feel great. all came as a bit of a shock but family, friends and even clients all mucked in together to help us move. The actual moving day was December the 27th 2012 and by the next day we managed to open up in the new premises!' As part of the move Yvonne had to take over the whole building. 'There was already a cafe on the first floor called The Gallery Cafe but we've spent 6 months completely renovating the entire premises.'
Christened Number 14, the cafe is open 7 days a week and 4 evenings serving simple homecooked food. 'At lunchtime we offer a selection of paninis, toasted sandwiches, quiche, jacket potatoes and daily specials, as well as an all-day breakfast,' says Yvonne. 'We currently have seven staff- including a barber-but are looking to recruit a new stylist and a trainee,' says Yvonne. 'We're a real family business and provide a friendly place to work and visit.' Moons offers a full range of hairdressing services and in particular, specialises in hair colouring. 'We cut everyone's hair from babies to all ages,' says Yvonne.’ We do bridal hair and make-up and we can offer packages in conjunction with local beauty therapists and skin specialists.' Taking over the new building has been a big challenge for Yvonne and she is very grateful for the support of many people. 'In particular I'd like to
thank local builder and friend Vince Sneath,' says Yvonne. 'Vince has done a fantastic job in renovating the building and has helped in so many other areas too. I'd also like to thank Charles and Edward Doe at John Doe of Diss for all their help and support. Both Charles and Edward, their salesroom staff and their fitters have worked tirelessly to make sure we opened in time and I really appreciate everything they've

A friendly dog needing a home.
In 1976 we had our first pedigree dog, a Dalmatian. The film a “Touch of Class” with Glenda Jackson was a favourite film so she was called Glen. This lasted about a week when I renamed her Piglet, she was a bit frightened of heffalumps like Winnie the Poo’s friend! We took her to Championship shows and first time out she qualified for Crufts! Crufts is different from all other shows as it is necessary to have had a previous top award to be able to enter. Sometimes you wonder how some of them made it!! After 30 years with Dalmatians I got a bit slow to run them well and we invested in something to walk with! Norwegian Buhunds are a delight to live with. Bu means farm in Norwegian. They are intelligent, loving, and noisy watchdogs. We
showed them and a different world opened for us. I first judged at open shows, with only the Kudos of winning for the exhibitors and went on to take all the exams necessary for the Kennel Club to give the OK for me to give Challenge Certificates in 2005. About 5 years ago I was invited to Judge at Crufts in 2013. What an honour, it's like getting an O.B.E.! I just hoped I’d live long enough! Now we have just two Buhunds but when we had Dalmatians we would have up to 8 at any one time. Breeding, showing and being part of the 101 and 102 films, but especially making sure the puppies went to life time homes was the most rewarding part. This year I did live long enough to fulfil the apex of my career. My best of breed has come from the US and was as near perfect as you can get to the breed standard. There is no such thing as a perfect dog and no such thing as a Crufts Champion, as so many people wrongly say. You need 3 CC’s at that show to be one and that rarely happens. I am judging various breeds around the country this year but I can never exceed the honour of being “A Crufts Judge.” Life without dogs, for me, wouldn’t be a life!
Duke a handsome grey Weimaraner desperately needs a loving home as he is not managing very well in a busy kennel environment. A friendly dog who needs regular medication as he suffers from eye and skin problems (which PACT will pay for) Duke needs a fit owner, as he does love his walks, who is at home most of the day. Having owned him from a puppy his owner asked us to take Duke in when she was moving abroad. Duke is fully vaccinated and neutered, he is good with most other dogs, although he does prefer medium to large size, but not cats and has not been socialised with children so we are looking for an adult only home without cats or other small animals. Please give poor Duke a second chance of a happy life. Caroline qualified as a dog groomer in 2012 after two years of training. But she first started working with animals ten years ago after a colleague suggested she took up house-sitting to help care for people's pets and farm animals while they're away. 'After doing a charity ride to Egypt, I came back and gave up my job as a PA to the Marketing Director of a large company,' says Caroline. 'I'd had no idea what I was going to do so when I heard

From that first booking, business gradually grew as more people recommended Caroline to their friends and family. Now Caroline is so busy with the house-sitting side of her business that she is booked up for more than a year in advance. 'I'm currently taking bookings for 2015,' says Caroline.

The one thing I miss alas is East Ends Pie & Mash but try as I might I can't get the pastry right? Please help! Yours Mrs. Irene Roper of Attleborough. Hi Irene, thanks for your question. I find a combination of suet pastry and Shortcrust to be to the best for a real London pie! Enjoy... For the suet pastry - Ingredients and Method: • 350g/12oz self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting • 225g/8oz beef suet • large knob of butter, softened, for greasing 1. Sift the flour into a mixing bowl with the suet and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Gradually mix in about four tablespoons of cold water, or until you have a moist but firm dough. 2. On a lightly floured work surface roll the dough out to a 2mm thickness. 3. Generously butter two individual pie dishes then line each with the suet pastry, so that it covers the base and sides completely. Divide the filling mixture between the two dishes.

A Real London Pie!
For the short crust pastry - Ingredients and Method: • 200g / 7 oz. plain flour or all-purpose flour • Pinch of salt • 110g / 4 oz. butter, cubed or an equal mix of butter and lard • 2-3 tbsp very cold wat er 1. Place the flour, butter and salt into a large clean bowl. 2. Rub the butter into the flou r with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadc rumbs, working as quickly as possible to prevent the dou gh becoming warm. 3. Add the water to the mix ture and using a cold knife stir until the dough binds togeth er; add more cold water a teaspoon at a time if the mix ture is too dry. 4. Wrap the dough in cling film / plastic wrap and chill for a minimum of 15 minutes and up to 30 minutes. 5. Roll out the Shortcrust pas try on a lightly floured work surface to a 2mm thickness and use it to cover the two pies, pushing down the edges to seal. Brush generously with the egg yolk and make a hole in the middle of the lid to allow steam to escape. 6. Place the pie dishes into a deep-sided roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to com e halfway up the sides of the pie dishes, taking care not to get any water on the pastry. Homes & Gardens Trend tip: Pale but interesting. As much as we love to use bright colours in our schemes, there are times when paler shades are a more appropriate solution. Pastels are a big trend at the moment and can create a really restful room. We thought we would share one of our designs to give you inspiration. Heavily patterned wallpapers and fabrics are lovely in pastel colours as they are not too overpowering but interesting. In the bedroom pictured we have used the lovely G P and J Baker “Plant seeker” wallpaper. It creates the perfect backdrop

to an otherwise neutral scheme that is made up with textures. Painted furniture and natural textiles such as linen and hessian sit really well in this type of scheme. As always the key to the success of the look is the lighting- keep the lighting soft with wall lights and table lamps, avoid harsh down lights as they will ‘bleach out’ the colour and leave the room feeling cold. Some lovely finishing touches such as distressed picture frames and knitted throws would complete the look perfectly.

Howard Nurseries at Wortham near Diss supplied plants to Two Gold medal winning gardens at the Chelsea Flower show this week. The gardens were the M&G Investment garden designed by Roger Platt and the Homebase garden designed by Adam Frost which both achieving the great accolade of a Gold medal. The gardens combined received 7,000 plants from the nursery. Both designers have a long standing relationship with the nursery with Roger being a customer for over 20 years
with his nursery. Normally Roger with his show gardens grows all his own plants but this year he decided to split his planting list with Howards. This proved to be a wise decision with the challenging weather this year. Adam has had links with the nursery as well for a number of years first meeting the proprietor David Howard with Geoff Hamilton as an apprentice over 25 years ago. This years Chelsea garden is Adam’s first large show garden which is fantastic for him to win a gold medal. The nursery and staff are honoured to be part of the journey to create the award winning gardens for the public to enjoy this week.
Keep Yer Heel Down Bor! Wotcha!... How are yer diddlin? Hasn't been bad weather has it? But then it is June (as I write)! I can't remember a time when the pressure's been so high for such a long time, but hasn't stopped the rain or wind. Especially the cold north-easterlies that plagued us recently. Anyway, the cutting alongside shows my dad and mum hoeing and probably 'stopping' melon plants. The 'stopping' would have been required on any trailer that had a set fruit on it – but each plant would have been restricted to a maximum of two melons. Apart from strawberries, it was the only crop where we could make use of the cloches in the summertime. Mum was chief packer, as well as being chief cook and bottle washer! If it was near dinner time (which would be around 1pm - and I'm still used to having dinner then – why have it in the evening when you can't work it off?!) I'd be listening out for the sound of a large bell which she used to signal that dinner was ready. I wasn't too happy if she was still in the field nearing 1pm! The melons were packed in crates using woodwool, and Bartrums Road Services (as they were known then) transported them to Covent Garden. Melons are as easy to grow as cucumbers and marrows, and the taste is out of this world. Dew yew keep on troshin and remember, if you want to impress friends at the dinner table give them a starter of nettle soup, main course of stuffed marrow and finish off with one of your fresh melons. Among those with a significant hearing loss and not using hearing aids, around 60% said they often felt exhausted in the evenings, while only 40% of those who used hearing aids said the same. When it came to mental exhaustion, around 50% of those who had a significant hearing loss and did not use hearing aids agreed that they often felt mentally exhausted in the evenings, while only around 30% of those who used

hearing aids said they often felt mentally exhausted in the evenings. Karen Finch, local audiologist and Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre, explains that this is a common symptom of having a hearing loss: “Nearly all the patients who come to see us about their hearing loss explain that they become exhausted at the end of the day. Instead of just relying on hearing to interpret speech and react appropriately, all available visual and acoustic clues have to be used as well. The added concentration and energy necessary needed to follow a conversation can leave us feeling extremely tired.” Karen continued, “When

hearing loss occurs, reactions to situations vary. Living with an unaddressed hearing loss can often lead to social isolation; we feel tired just trying to live our everyday day lives in the same way we once did when we could hear.” “It is important to break this negative cycle and get your hearing assessed if you recognise this pattern. Fancy playing green bowls? Head to Causeway Bowls Club, Diss. For decades the sport of green bowling has been an essential part of the British summer - men and women dressed in their spotless whites, playing on an immaculate lawn. Diss is lucky to have had its own Bowls Club since the war and today it is still going strong. Neatly tucked behind the car park on Chapel Street, the Diss Causeway Bowls Club has 35 members and is on the hunt for more! 'A lot of local clubs have gone into decline and we want to prevent that happening to us too,' explains member Ian Allen. 'We would love

to find new members of all ages‌ they would be very welcome.' During the summer, the Club plays on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings. They are part of three different leagues in Norfolk and Suffolk. Every Friday morning, they hold a coffee morning in their Clubhouse from 9-1pm to raise funds to keep the club going. Members of the public are more than welcome to come and have a drink and something to eat - all at very reasonable prices. 'We are also open one Saturday evening a month - with the next one being on July

20th - for people to just come along and have a game,' says Ian Allan. 'We have bowls and shoes available and can offer coaching to anyone who would like it. Anyone who is keen to find out more should come along at 6.30pm to join in and get to know us. The bar is open too!' The Club itself has an excellent clubhouse, complete with bar and toilet facilities. It has also just been refurbished with new carpets and paint. 'Our green is also one of the best in the area,' says Richard Watkinson, Secretary. Alongside the bowling, the Club also has quite an active social life too - they even get together to play dominos most mornings. 'We are also very keen to support the local charity East Anglian Children's Hospice who do an amazing job,' says Ian Allen. 'We raise funds for them whenever possible. We are currently planning an open day, in conjunction with the WI, sometime in August so keep an eye out for that.' The Causeway Bowls Club has always been an important part of the local community and has relied heavily on local people for support. Former member Denis Collins
remembers how, in 1952, members clubbed together to take out a loan to buy the ground from a local woman called Mrs Sharp. 'From what I can remember it cost ÂŁ285 which was a very large amount of money in those days,' recalls Denis. 'The two people who were responsible for keeping the club going during this time were Gordon Secker and Clifford Sutton who worked tirelessly. Gordon Secker even ran whist drives in the church nearby to raise funds. We used to have an old shed in the corner where the women would come and knit.' Now, over sixty years later, the people of Diss should be proud of their club.
